Aim was to investigate to what extent cognitive functioning differs by three socioeconomic conditions: low income, being without employment, and living alone. A total of N = 158,144 participants of the population-based German National Cohort (NAKO) provided data on socioeconomic conditions and completed cognitive tests. Multivariable confounder-adjusted regression analyses indicated that cognitive functioning was lower in those with low income (b = −0.21) compared to not having low income, living alone (b = −0.04) compared to not living alone, and being without employment (b = −0.09) compared to being employed. An interaction with age indicated that the difference in cognitive functioning was getting larger with age between the income groups and living alone status groups. Accordingly, the three conditions appear independently associated with poorer cognitive functioning. Pathways of how cognitive health in this population group can be improved need to be explored. Objective: To assess the associations of asthma status or age at asthma diagnosis with cognition using the Telephone Survey of Cognitive Status from a large population-based sample. Further, we investigated the possibility that asthma treatment mediates these associations. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study from the Indonesian Family Life Survey Fifth Wave (IFLS-5) collected in 2014–2015. A weighted linear regression model was used to examine the associations between asthma and cognitive functioning scores in adults aged 50 years or older. Of the 6660 total samples included in this study, 176 participants had asthma (2.6%). We controlled for age, sex, and urbanicity with further adjustments for adult covariates or childhood covariates, as appropriate. Results: There was no association between overall asthma status and cognitive functioning scores. However, asthma diagnosed at 0–19 years was associated with significantly higher cognitive functioning scores (Beta coefficient = 2.24, 95% CI: 0.62 – 0.87), compared to those without asthma. In the analysis involving current treatment status (restricted analysis), the significant association disappeared among those under current asthma treatment status, indicating that asthma treatment may mediate the association. Conclusion: Asthma might not be a risk factor for cognitive impairment. Observations of a significant association of pediatric asthma with higher cognitive scores need further investigation. Previous work has shown that high mental demands are associated with better cognitive functioning in old age. As there is a lack of a general conceptual framework for this association, the aim of the study was to investigate how mental demands and other work-related factors relate to cognitive functioning as a foundation for developing such a framework. An expert panel discussion was conducted with the aim of determining relevant work-related factors, which were then tested in a survey with 346 employees aged 50+ years, who were actively working. Assessment of cognitive functioning comprised complex attention, executive function, learning/memory, language, perceptual-motor, and social cognition. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to confirm factor belonging. Associations with cognitive functioning were analyzed using structure equation modelling to confirm associations and to identify additional direct and indirect paths. Only 42.3% (22/52) of the work-related factors and 19.0% (4/21) of the mediating paths suggested by the experts were significant with respect to cognitive functioning. Factor analysis and structural equation modeling indicated that high mental demands are only associated with better cognitive functioning in old age to the extent that they are intellectually stimulating and this effect is embedded in individual capacities and the social context. Based on the panel discussion and the empirical testing, we propose the Conceptual Framework of Social Dependency of Intellectual Stimulation on Cognitive Health. Exposure to environmental changes in windows are essential to sustain healthy conditions indoors; however, there are no procedures for capturing these variations dynamically. In this study, we provide the foundations for building a framework aimed at understanding the effects of luminous variability in window views. First, we labelled a sample of views (n = 40) using a surface layout approach, resulting in four view type categories. Next, we captured time-lapse imagery from selected views (n = 8) to produce panorama sequences. We calculated the absolute lightness variation in Matlab, resulting in three luminous change categories (i.e. Global, Local, and Minimal variation). Concurrently, we collected environmental measures to define variability thresholds. The integrated analysis showed a higher occurrence of luminous changes in two categories in controlled conditions, suggesting that viewing configuration might prevail over window orientation for conveying light changes over time. Objectives: Mental demands at the workplace can be preventive against cognitive decline. However, personality shapes the way information is processed and we therefore assume that Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness and Conscientiousness, would moderate the beneficial effects of workplace stimulation on cognitive outcomes. Methods: We analyzed data from the population-based LIFE-Adult-Study (n = 6529). Cognitive outcomes were assessed via the Trail-Making Test (TMTA, TMTB) and the Verbal Fluency Test. Personality was assessed via the Personality Adjective List (16 AM). Mental demands were classified with the indices Verbal and Executive based on the O*NET database. Results: Multivariate regression analyses showed only two significant moderation effects of personality, i.e. in individuals with low scores on Conscientiousness/Openness, index Verbal was connected to better TMTB performance, while this effect disappeared for individuals with high values on the personality trait. However, the additional explained variance remained marginal. Conclusion: The findings suggest that personality does not modify associations between high mental demands at work and better cognitive functioning in old age; however, there is a tendency that high levels of Openness and Conscientiousness may offset effects of mental demands. Introduction: Many medical facilities and research institutes start using digital assessment methods to assess cognitive abilities, such as processing speed, instead of the traditional pen and paper versions. Even though many of the new digital assessment methods have shown to have a stable internal validity, the comparability of results across assessment modes is unclear. The study investigated whether results for assessing processing speed via (i) the traditional pen and paper version, (ii) a tablet and pen version, and (iii) a tablet and finger version are comparable. Methods: In a within-subject design, each participant (N= 30) completed the 90-number version by Oswald and Roth (1987) of the trail-making test (TMT) in three different assessment modes in randomized order. Each participant completed four TMT versions in each assessment mode (3 × 4 within-subject design). Results: Repeated measures ANOVA and mixed-effects analyses adjusted for age, gender, mode order, and trial number reveal significantly faster test TMT completion times (about 5 s) for the tablet and pen version compared to the pen and paper and the tablet and finger version. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that assessing processing speed can lead to different results with different digital versions depending on their setup, especially different input devices. Medical professionals and researchers who use digital assessment methods to assess cognitive abilities need to be aware of mode effects, even within the digital assessment domain, because the results may not be comparable and the available norms may not be applicable.
