In the last decades, the use and misuse of pesticides in the agriculture have increased, having a severe impact on ecosystems and their fauna. Although the various effects of pesticides on biodiversity have been already documented in several studies, to our knowledge no consistent overview of the impact of pesticides in vertebrates, both terrestrial and aquatic, is available. In this review, we try to present a concise compilation of the teratogenic effects of pesticides on the different classes of vertebrates – mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Capsule: A ten-year study of the causes of mortality in birds brought to a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Portugal, reveals that most deaths were due to trauma. Aims: This study aims to identify the main causes of morbidity and mortality in wild birds admitted to a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Northern Portugal, from 2008 to 2017. Methods: A total of 6058 records of admittance and necropsy were examined. Results: In the 24 orders present in the study, the most commonly reported were the Charadriiformes (34.1%) and Passeriformes (28.7%). The majority were adult individuals (80%) and most admissions were in the summer (43.1%). The main causes of admission were birds being injured (57%) and orphaned (18.3%). Trauma was also the most important cause of death (57%), followed by predation (1.6%) and collision with buildings (1.6%). The non-traumatic causes of death (2606, 43%) were mainly of unknown origin (22.2%) and infectious diseases (10%). Conclusion: The data analysed in our study allowed us to conclude that the main causes of morbidity and mortality of the birds admitted was due to trauma. This paper seeks to put into perspective the current situation of preservation and performability of a certain Portuguese contemporary music, known as Portuguese musical avant-garde, focusing on the preservation of experimental music from 1960 onwards. This strives to problematise this subject by not only presenting the creative context to these specific musical works but also the main priorities around their documentation and preservation. Furthermore, we also set out actual efforts to retrieve as many musical works as possible, specifically by gathering together all the facets of the musical works, including their magnetic tape recordings. This paper reflects on the continuity ofSalt Itinerary, a born-digital musical work that crosses boundaries between music, theatre, and the visual arts, created by Portuguese poet, performer, and composer Miguel Azguime (b. 1960). Several composers and interpreters have pointed out the importance of documentation in the preservation of contemporary music when they experience difficulties while performing the prescribed actions in the score without a description of the results to be achieved along with the composer's intentions. Therefore, a methodological approach was developed which combinesprescriptiveanddescriptivedocumentation as a main component in the preservation strategy for contemporary musical works. This paper analyses and discusses whether and how this methodology can be applied to the field of contemporary art preservation. The ATM kinase has previously been shown to respond to the DNA damage induced by reoxygenation following hypoxia by initiating a Chk 2-dependent cell cycle arrest in the G2 phase. Here we show that ATM is both phosphorylated and active during exposure to hypoxia in the absence of DNA damage, detectable by either comet assay or 53BP1 focus formation. Hypoxia-induced activation of ATM correlates with oxygen concentrations low enough to cause a replication arrest and is entirely independent of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 status. In contrast to damage-activated ATM, hypoxia-activated ATM does not form nuclear foci but is instead diffuse throughout the nucleus. The hypoxia-induced activity of both ATM and the related kinase ATR is independent of NBS1 and MRE11, indicating that the MRN complex does not mediate the DNA damage response to hypoxia. However, the mediator MDC1 is required for efficient activation of Kap1 by hypoxia-induced ATM, indicating that similarly to the DNA damage response, there is a requirement for MDC1 to amplify the ATM response to hypoxia. However, under hypoxic conditions, MDC1 does not recruit BRCA1/53BP1 or RNF8 activity. Our findings clearly demonstrate that there are alternate mechanisms for activating ATM that are both stress-specific and independent of the presence of DNA breaks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
