This study examined the association of household food security and school participation in the community eligibility provision (CEP). Surveys were collected from 427 households within 5 schools participating in CEP, and therefore providing access to universal free school meals, and three matched comparison district schools, which were CEP-eligible but not participating. Multivariate logistic regression, adjusted for race/ethnicity and education level, revealed that the odds of being in a food insecure household were twice as likely for students attending CEP-eligible, but not participating schools than for students attending CEP schools [OR 2.85 (95% CI 1.67, 4.88)]. The objective of this study was to measure the reliability of an index to assess healthy food in food stores. Food stores across Baltimore City were assessed using the Healthy Food Availability Index-Brief (HFAI-B) tool and resulting HFAI-B score. Reliability was measured using the Pearson correlation for the HFAI-B score, and Cohen's Kappa for other binary and categorical store parameters. All items included in the HFAI-B score had high inter-rater and test-retest reliability. The Pearson Correlation coefficient for HFAI-B scores between and within observers was very high. The views on plagiarism of 574 students at four Australian universities operating in Singapore were investigated through a survey and interviews. Analysis of students' responses to different plagiarism scenarios revealed misconceptions and uncertainties about many aspects of plagiarism. Self-plagiarism and reuse of a friend's work were acceptable to more than one quarter of the students, and nearly half considered collusion to be a legitimate form of collaboration. One quarter of the students also indicated that they would knowingly plagiarize. This should serve as a wake-up call regarding plagiarism in transnational higher education. The study investigates the performance of the recently developed Health of the Nation Outcome Scales (HoNOS) by validating scores against three other well-validated instruments for assessing psychiatric symptoms and social functioning. A consecutive sample of 100 admissions to an acute psychiatric ward were assessed at admission and discharge. Scores on the HoNOS were compared to those on the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Symptom Checklist 90-Revised and the Social Adjustment Scale. Only half the correlations between HoNOS scales and the psychometric measures were significant and these were not particularly high (range 0.21–0.55 for significant correlations). Overall HoNOS scores were relatively low despite the high level of morbidity in the sample. This study casts doubt on the validity of the HoNOS. Modifications to the scales are needed with clearer anchoring definitions for the scale points and a specified training programme to ensure accurate use. Further studies of validity are required.
