In this paper, I use posthumanism and autotheory to materialize the gendered, racialized and sexualized hair/her/stories of British-Muslim schoolgirls in my study. As an act of feminist indiscipline and a feminist transdisciplinary innovative practice, I entangle with those affective, material, embodied and embedded encounters and stories that grow, escape, flow and glow with the vital materiality of hair and her stories. Hair, as one of the transgressive data of my PhD research, emerged in various temporal, spatial and material contexts throughout our research encounters. Considering hair as having posthuman agency, I argue how it can enable different material relations in everyday lived experiences of Muslim schoolgirls with hijab, body, educational environments and practices. Inspired by the notion that theory can do more the closer it gets to the skin what I call Posthumanist autotheory, has emerged from the body-theory encounters. I use posthumanist autotheory to materialize how hair as the ‘auto’ and the more-than-human agency in autotheory grows and becomes matter, method and theory. In using posthumanist autotheory as a feminist transdisciplinary innovative and speculative affirmative approach, this paper hopes to enable knowledge shifts in participatory researching on gendered and racializing assemblages to those everyday ordinary economic, institutional, biological and medical matters and assemblages that constitute racism. This paper reflects on the dynamic of co-developing knowledge within a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) project in the UK that set out to direct teenage and young adult Ambulatory Care. This is a service that offers cancer treatment that would have once required inpatient hospital stays. Working within a Community-of-Inquiry (CoI), young people from this cancer community became co-researchers, participating in every phase of the qualitative research. This contribution is written from the perspective of two members of the CoI, Alison, a cancer researcher-practitioner, and Michela, a young associate researcher with lived experience of cancer. Drawing on the Ambulatory Care research as a case study, they offer a reflective account of involving young people in research that directs both action and participatory action research processes. In doing so, they engage in a critical exploration of their participatory research inquiry, contextualising their discussion with some of the extant literature relevant to their chosen CBPR approach. The researchers found that both Ambulatory Care and their research dynamic foster young people’s agency. Evident too, was that within research that prioritises relationships and knowledge democracy and which associates with a sense of the collective, individuality can also sit comfortably alongside. This paper records knowledge from below around the overlaps between health, water, and health interventions emerging from rural communities located in North 24 Parganas and Purulia in West Bengal. Using the culture-centered approach and necrocapitalism, this essay documents the localocentric stories from the subaltern communities disproportionately impacted by water insecurity. Based on data collected during a seven-week field study, a critical thematic analysis of the data reveals how research participants with minoritized caste and low-income backgrounds routinely challenge, disrupt, and re-organize the dominant frames of health, water, and health interventions as articulated by local–global organizational actors. Additionally, research participant narratives make visible how they navigate social, cultural, institutional, and capitalist structures that adversely affect water security and their health. This article recounts the changes that occurred when a research study was redesigned to become more participatory, involving children, teachers, families, and the wider symbolic cultural neighbourhood. What emerged was a research study that was integrated into the curriculum of a four-year-old classroom. Here, the process is specifically examined through which curriculum emerged when the research project called the Treasure Map Experience (TME) was embedded into the weekly curriculum of a four-year-old classroom. In recounting this process, it became evident that the emergent early childhood curriculum included tenets of Developmental Education, notably the two most prevalent instructional practices of shared direct instruction and environmental exposure, which correlate with Vygotsky’s spontaneous/everyday and scientific concept acquisition. Moreover, the inclusion of numerous technical and psychological tools is noted as they appear in the emergent Treasure Map Curriculum. Based on the idea that child development occurs as a result of a sociocultural process where a child appropriates cultural tools within relationships and interactions with adults and ‘more knowledgeable others’, the emergent curriculum serves as an example of Developmental Education. This article contributes to the emerging literature on decolonial research capacity-sharing (the process of strengthening individual/organisational capacity to shape research agendas, assess, design, produce, disseminate, and apply evidence). It provides a discussion of a participatory research capacity-sharing initiative led by Joint Learning Initiative on Faith and Local Communities (JLI), which was aimed at practitioners, activists, and researchers, with valuable experience as professionals and activists but little to no prior research experience, from various parts of Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. While existing literature (including publications on decolonial research capacity-sharing) often assumes that research capacity-sharing is led by and aimed at academics, our article reflects on the question of how decolonial research capacity-sharing can be implemented in interventions led by and aimed at non-academics. It therefore makes an important contribution to existing literature on research capacity-sharing, pointing to the important role practitioners, activists, and community members can play, especially in interventions informed by decolonial principles. Various forms of participatory action research (PAR) have in the past decades gained prominence in practice-oriented scholarship in pursuit of human liberatory causes. But this strand of research remains much less visible in the mainstream publications of nonprofit research. This article discusses PAR in relation to its concept, philosophy, methods, processes, validity and ethics. Then, it assesses its application in nonprofit settings, using examples from the authors' experiences and the literature. The article then considers the prospects of using PAR in nonprofit research and makes a few suggestions for nonprofit practitioners and researchers interested in this approach. The focus of this article is Ireland. Activism has been crucial in exposing historical institutional abuse in different institutions, organisations and contexts. Inquiries set up to investigate abuse have recommended memorials as an element of redress. This article explores what types of memorialisation survivors regard as appropriate, and why. Two responses are considered: (1) state and (2) 'bottom-up' unofficial. The article highlights that survivors are rarely active participants in co-creating and implementing state responses. The concept of 'authorised heritage discourse' (AHD) is used to shed light on whose knowledge is prioritised, who are deemed the experts and who decides what heritage is. The article contributes to this theorisation by proposing a new concept, 'activist heritage', and examines its potential to create spaces and unlock transformative dynamics that empower survivors. Then, using Justice for Magdalene Research's (JFMR) virtual memorial museum as a case study of 'activist heritage', the article shows that in the absence of state or national forms of recognition, JFMR provides a corrective to AHD. It acts as a counter-narrative in the struggle over memory to state and church 'forgetting', ignoring and minimising institutional abuse. Foregrounding the voices of young women in a deprived coastal context in the UK, this paper explores the intersection of place, class, gender and marginalisation. Drawing upon participatory qualitative research, the paper focuses on the following key themes: (1) how young women navigate perceptions of 'risk' through the everyday realities of the locale, (2) experiences of sexual violence and abuse (3) and finally, how normative depictions of 'risky behaviour' correspond to the accounts of women's (sexual) agency. By rooting the analysis of place-based inequalities through a gendered lens, the findings help illuminate the complex relationship between structural context and the regulation of gender and sexuality. The paper also draws attention to the structural factors that reproduce class-based stigma for people who are deemed 'at risk' in places that are characterised as 'left behind'. Peer mentoring programs have been shown to assist students with their college transition, and this study sought to understand the effects of peer mentorship participation of students in a STEM major. Using a semistructured interview method, six participants of a student-run, volunteer, peer mentorship program within the [Undergraduate STEM Program (USP)] provided participant feedback in one-on-one interviews. Using the constant comparison method, program outcome categories were identified based on participant responses. Participants were positive about the program and its benefits, including personal growth, development of a sense of responsibility for others, and learning from those who had gone through the program previously. However, issues with consistent engagement were identified that may be addressed through modifications to program structure and clarification of role expectations. Repeated viewing of the same video is a common strategy among autonomous language learners as well as a much used pedagogical strategy among foreign language (FL) teachers. Learners may watch the same video more than once, to increase global comprehension of the target language or to focus their attention on linguistic aspects, such as new vocabulary or pronunciation. This study sought to examine to what extent repetition is more efficient for vocabulary learning if the second viewing follows the first immediately, or a week later. Participants were upper intermediate-level college learners who were distributed into three groups, one watched a TV series episode twice in the same session, one also watched the same episode twice but one week apart, and the last (control) group did not watch the video. Tests of word meaning recognition and word meaning recall were administered before and after viewing (pretest-immediate posttest-delayed posttest). The pretest and posttests contained 23 target items and 17 distracters (single words and multi-word expressions). In addition, the study explored the influence of two learner factors, each related to one of two verbal input channels: sound recognition for the audio and reading efficacy (reading speed and comprehension) for the onscreen text. The results indicated significant vocabulary learning from viewing and slightly higher benefits for the spaced repetition group at immediate posttest. The results also showed a significant influence of previous target vocabulary knowledge and of aptitude, as measured by the LLAMA D test, but not of reading efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports on a study that examined the relationship between language learners' L2 grit and language mindsets and their attitudes toward CALL. The participants of the study were 625 EFL learners (male = 165, 26.4%; female = 460, 73.6%) with the mean age of 24.4 years (SD = 1.74). They were asked to respond to questionnaires on language mindsets, L2 grit, and attitudes toward CALL. The data were analyzed through regression and structural equation modeling (SEM). The results indicated that fixed mindsets predicted the effectiveness of CALL negatively and exhibition to CALL positively, whereas growth mindsets positively predicted the effectiveness of CALL. The results also indicated that persistence of effort positively predicted surplus value of CALL and teacher's influence on CALL, and consistency of interest predicted degree of exhibition to CALL. This article explores the use of learning walks with children as a participatory research method to make sense of school experiences through prompts from the environment. The method was utilized as a tool to build relationships with the research participants and provide insight into their experiences of school. Seven children learning English as an additional language (EAL) participated in three learning walks and debriefing activities. Key concepts from Laura Lundy's participation model (2007, 'Voice' is not enough: conceptualising Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, British educational research journal, 33 (6), 927–942. doi: ) were utilized to elicit and amplify children's voices. The learning walks offered space and time for dialogue outside of the classroom and pedagogic structure, an audience that informed the research and influence communicated back to teachers. Children's experiences of school included accounts of language, belonging and relationships with peers and adults. This paper explores the use of Critical Communicative Methodology (CCM) as a collaborative research approach to co-construct knowledge with participants in a research project aimed to enhance the inclusion of students with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) in three mainstream schools in England. The paper discusses how collaboration between researchers and research participants (i.e. school staff, parents and students), based on egalitarian dialogue, created knowledge co-construction through the use of reflective conversations, communicative focus groups and communicative observations. By describing the design of the project and reflecting on the decisions taken with the participants, the paper highlights how CCM supported the researchers and the participants in reconsidering their assumptions towards inclusive practices. The paper also shows how the generation of qualitative findings with the participants led to the co-creation of a toolkit to improve the services schools provide to students with SEND and their families. The main ethical issues, the unique role of CCM, and challenges in its implementation are discussed. There is an increasing focus on collecting more diverse demographic data from research participants but standard methodological approaches still hinder such efforts. This paper addresses the need for methodological improvements by advocating for the inclusion of self-written diversity statements in demographic surveys as a form of epistemic justice. Using examples from a large qualitative research study, I demonstrate the depth and richness of data that can be obtained through self-written diversity statements. In particular, I highlight the benefits of combining open-ended demographic questions and self-written diversity statements into holistic introductory stories to help capture the complexity of participants' intersectional identities. As the balance of forces in Brazil shifted toward conservatism in the 2010s, regional agricultural elites and Jair Bolsonaro formed a political-economic movement. This article analyses the constitution and consolidation of this movement, here called agri-bolsonarism, considering its connections with national agricultural associations and transnational agribusiness corporations and its relations with agrarian and climate politics. This article shares our experience of pivoting a place-focused participatory research project with children in rural China who have migrant parents from an in situ design to an online design during the COVID-19 pandemic. In redesigning the project, we shifted the photovoice component online, and substituted digital storytelling for go-along interviews. We found that the use of cell phone-supported photovoice and storytelling techniques not only provided significant flexibility in engaging children, but also empowered them to take an active role in presenting their viewpoints. Our experience demonstrated the potential for these virtual methods to increase confidence and participation among child participants, while allowing for a meaningful collaborative process between the children and researchers. Although we recognize that the data lacks the observational dimensions inherent in field-based place research, the online platform and associated digital technologies nonetheless enabled both children and researchers to capture meaningful aspects of children’s lives in everyday places. AbstractThere is a growing interest in scholarship on the creative forms of Pentecostalism in Africa and globally. This study extends the conversation by exploring music-making in prayer mountain spirituality in Nigeria. Specifically, it examines the roles of music makers and their creative processes in prayer mountain liturgy. In addition, it discusses factors that aid creativity among music makers in the prayer mountains. Two popular prayer mountains, namely Orí-òkè Ikoyi in Ikoyi and Orí-òkè Bàbà Àbíyè in Ede, Osun State Nigeria, were selected for the study. Data for the study were generated through participant observations and interviews with music makers including prayer and song leaders as well as instrumentalists on both prayer mountains. Using the dynamic inspiration theory, the study reveals that music-making in Orí-òkè is a triadic process that is spiritually, musically, and situationally integrated. I argue that with Orí-òkè music and musicians, we can further grasp the interplay of human (social) and non-human (spiritual) agency in Pentecostal creative and musical practices. While children and youth undeniably have a stake in and are affected by global migration governance, they have only recently gained recognition as a constituency in global multi-stakeholder dialogues around migration. In this article, we examine the ways in which the mobilization of young people has created new pathways for child and youth representation in the global governance of migration. Based on the analysis of policy documents, interviews and participant observations from the 13th Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) in 2021, we demonstrate how children and youth as a stakeholder group have established new processes to identify policy priorities, select representatives and build partnerships to offer solutions to pressing migration challenges. Although institutional trajectories limit the kinds of representation that become possible, the mobilization of young people has resulted in a tangible strengthening of their access, space and strategic position to represent themselves in global migration governance. We evaluate botanical insecticides as a technological device for synthetic input substitution in peri-urban horticultural system transitions. For that purpose, a Participatory Action Research (PAR) framework was proposed, and garlic extracts (GE) performance was evaluated for pest and natural enemy regulation in lettuce crops in conventional and agroecological contexts. Through three PAR cycles under actual production conditions, we observed GE effectiveness on aphids, thrips, and natural enemies. Additionally, context-specific adaptations were noticed: for conventional systems; the extract is useful near harvest and serves as a trust-building tool while reducing synthetic insecticide dependence. The involvement of peer researchers has recently gained popularity in social research, and the incentives for using participatory methodologies are well recognised. However, as we argue, the sole presence of peer researchers does not equate to their immediate empowerment, and more attention should be given to the roles they play in the research and the ways in which they can tangibly benefit from such collaborations. We explore the seemingly mundane aspects of work such as recruitment, training, conducting research, dissemination and the afterlife of the project, to suggest that meaningful engagement of peer researchers demands a tailored approach that is receptive to their particular needs and motivations, and is supportive of their individual growth. Our critical reflection stems from a two-year-long collaboration with peer researchers in Poland undertaken as part of a Horizon 2020 project, which explored the lives of young migrants and refugees in Europe. Recent decades have seen institutionalized procedures for youth representation in global climate governance, and significant visibility for youth climate activists. Despite these improvements, young representatives continue to bear witness about tokenized forms of participation and a lack of influence. This article seeks to address this ambiguous development by focusing on the materiality of youth representation in United Nations climate conferences. Through interviews and participant observations at COP26 and COP27, as well as COY16 and COY17, we analyse the bureaucratic and socio-economic barriers to representation, the knowledge resources and competitiveness of the routes to representation, and the spatial ordering and subversive tactics on site at the summits. We show that these materialities shape youth’s discursive strategies, thus helping to explain who gets to be a representative and what forms of subjectivities, agendas, claims, and strategies that become possible in the global climate governance regime. Inspired by interviews conducted with scientists who primarily use participatory research forms, the article develops the concept of epistemic caring as a proposal for a participatory research practice that is sensitive for epistemological difference and the associated consequences. Based on the observation that participatory research has so far hardly been able to produce an equal co-constitution of knowledge, the article points out epistemological pitfalls that exist in it and analyses two specific concepts as examples of the risk of problematic epistemological and hegemonic tendencies sneaking into this kind of research practice with harmful consequences for the non-academic participants, that is: empowerment and participation/co-production. Following the recent debate on care in the Environmental Humanities and Karen Barad’s methodological thoughts on diffraction, the article reconceptualizes participatory research as a matter of care consisting of multiple care relations in order to be able to grasp the complex epistemic entaglements and intra-dependencies contained within it. Conceiving these relationships between academic and non-academic participants as an ecology of care themself helps to understand that they are fundamentally precarious and transformative and thus inherently ethical. The eSports industry has transformed rapidly in China in the last decade to become a flourishing business domain. ESports practitioners have been endorsed by the Chinese government (Wong and Meng-Lewis 2023), which recognized eSports as an official occupation in 2019. However, previous studies have interpreted eSports work as ‘playbour’, neglecting the professional and vocational dimensions of eSports. The field of affects related to eSports work is also understudied. This study employs certain ethnographic methods (participant observation and interview) to demonstrate the dialectical relationship between work and play through the construct of ‘work-and-play’, which emphasizes the new work ethic of ‘do what you love’. Esports players engage professionally in the work of playing games motivated by love, hope and ‘the champion dream’. This paper describes and reflects upon the first author’s journey from teacher to researcher, working with deafblind children and young people, and the research teams’ development of person-centred research methods. Historically deafblind people, particularly children and young people, have rarely been included in participation action research, in part, due to perceived challenges around communication and access. This paper outlines work being undertaken as part of a PhD project that aims to improve academic and social outcomes for deafblind children and young people. It also outlines a novel methodological focus on accommodating the unique communication and access requirements for deafblind young people, to effectively facilitate engagement in participation action research, and ensure research methods are centred on them, using both established and novel research techniques. Progress to date is outlined, describing the reflexive approach used to collaborate with deafblind young people, to inform our practice, and meet the needs of deafblind children and young people. Studies on Muslim self-conception within Central Asia have flourished over the past twenty years in post-Soviet Central Asia as they did in the 1960s and 1970s within Afghanistan. This research provides qualitative data to compare studies on identity formation within Central Asia, particularly among Uzbeks. From 2018–2019, the author interviewed 20 Uzbek speakers and conducted participant observation in a community of Afghan Uzbeks in northern Afghanistan. The study sought to understand how Uzbek-speaking Sunni Afghans negotiate their identity, particularly with regard to the role of religion in that identity formation. This data was analysed using the grounded theory tools of coding, memo-writing and theory development. The study found that religion played a role in defining identity and ethnicity by reinforcing their membership in the collective identity of the nation of Afghanistan. In 2015, the UN Security Council unanimously passed Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS), formalizing an agenda for positive youth participation in peace and security. However, youth peace activists have been leading peacebuilding long before this institutional recognition. This article explores the dynamics of how advocates and institutional actors conceptualize and negotiate compromise. To do this, it draws on in-depth interviews with youth and adult YPS advocates, a critical analysis of documents related to the agenda, and extended participant observation. It explores and develops a notion of a field of youth-oriented peacebuilding, drawing on Bourdieu. This makes visible a more complex field of struggle, showing how compromise can help explain how youth actively negotiate their participation in formalized agendas and persist in their own peacebuilding ambitions. Declining rural areas have become central sites for migrant settlement. In the hope that migration will counteract rural shrinkage, migrants are increasingly portrayed as catalysts to revitalize communities. This article critically examines migration to declining rural areas vis-à-vis rural reception and regeneration policies. Drawing on qualitative research including interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observations, we compare migrants’ settlement experiences and their positions in rural revitalization processes in northeast Spain and eastern Germany. Our research illustrates that local reception and regeneration policies do not only sideline the role of newcomers as rural place-makers, who contribute to the sustainment (or expansion) of local services and infrastructures. They also result in conditions of ‘predatory inclusion’, in which migrants’ settlement is shaped regarding their potential ‘use’ for revitalizing local economies and housing markets in exploitative terms and along racialized lines. Facing precarious labor and housing conditions, migrants tend to reside only temporarily in our investigated areas. This article contributes to a growing body of migration research in rural areas and explains that attempts at regeneration through migration can run the risk of ignoring migrants' structural conditions, needs, mobility aspirations and life plans, thereby reinforcing racial and class-based inequalities present in rural areas. Feminist principles in research emphasize acknowledging differences to address power imbalances. Taken at face value, discussions on positionality tend to prioritize differences, often turning into mere declarations of the researcher’s social privilege. To counterbalance this tendency, I highlight the critical importance of also focusing on shared experiences between the researcher and research participants. Based on my feminist ethnographic fieldwork, this research note reflects on my positionality as an Uzbek musofir (migrant) kelin (daughter-in-law) conducting doctoral research on the lived experiences of women in Tashkent’s bazaars. It illustrates how my complex, intertwined identity as a locally raised and foreign-educated musofir kelin initially posed challenges in accessing the field and building trust with participants. Yet, it also highlights how, in addition to the shared experience of musofirchilik, the oppressive experience of kelinhood can be subverted to build solidarity and rapport with the women in the bazaars, transforming an oppressive experience into subversive solidarity. The space-time design of hospital care services is still an underdeveloped topic in sociological and medical literature. The article explores the social affordances inscribed in the space-time design of a hospital outpatient waiting room in relation to people care engagement and emotional comfort. The aim is to extend considerations to the broader context of relational and person-centered care. Observations employed of participants in the field study have a two-fold focus. One is 'waiting' for a service or a person, and the other is 'expecting' something or someone from a service. 'Multisensory-scape' and 'Self-less subject' are two metaphors I have adopted to describe the in field patient waiting experience. In the first case, people's perception of hospital staff seeing and hearing them is central to observation in the care path. The second case is instead the result of people feeling a loss of identity when there is a time-mismatch between daily life routines and hospital organization rules. It is fundamental to consider the impact on people's waiting experience because citizens and patients trace their feelings of 'being taken into charge' and 'continuity of care' back to the emotional comfort experienced the first moment they accessed the space-time design of hospital services. This paper addresses epistemic violence in social science research, drawing on a multiyear study with marginalized teenagers in Old Havana, Cuba to articulate an onto-epistemological approach to knowledge production that can contribute to the decoloniality of knowledge production. Building on decolonial, feminist, Indigenous, and poststructuralist theories, the heuristic presented here contributes an alternative to conventional positivist understandings of knowledge, by defining knowledge as social, created, performed and resistant, and illustrates how these theoretical tenets can be made material in research practice, in this case through the use of arts-based methods. Leadership is a topic of vast exploration, with different scholars coming up with various definitions, descriptions and characteristics of effective leadership. The main aim of this qualitative study was to investigate the experiences and perceptions of senior educational leaders working in the Department of Education in Malta. The study was investigated from a constructivist and interpretivist paradigm. The data gathered through in-depth interviews was analysed manually using a hybrid approach method. Amongst various concepts, two salient themes on leadership emerged, namely how these leaders view leadership, and the importance of healthy relationships in leadership. The findings demonstrated that the participants in the exploration have a clear notion of leadership, and they appreciate that for effective leadership, healthy relationship with the stakeholders should be an important aspect. Two important recommendations that were established from this study are organised professional development programmes in leadership, and training programmes focusing on how to build healthy collegial relationships. This study uses document, observation, and interview to analyze ten Taiwanese elementary school English teachers' practice and exercise of leadership among other colleagues during professional dialogue and to examine what influenced the practice of leadership. This study has the following major findings. First, participants' leadership was mainly centered on improving colleagues' teaching and learning practices, rather than traditional leadership in terms of power and authority. Secondly, lack of time, negotiating with administrators, consensus among teachers, and expertise in English instruction affected participants' effectiveness in leading the meetings and discussions. Instructional leadership is an educational leadership model in which principals are directly and continually involved in curricular and instructional issues. This study aimed to identify the relationships needed for principals' instructional leadership, a topic that has not been sufficiently explored. Participants of this qualitative study were 26 Israeli school principals. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Findings suggest that instructional leaders do not only focus on ensuring that educational work is carried out adequately but also on intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships. The basis for instructional leadership is four relationships that principals need to cultivate: (1) with themselves; (2) with school middle leaders; (3) with teachers; and (4) with external stakeholders. The return to work is a key reason for breastfeeding cessation worldwide. Where workplace breastfeeding support is available, it is shaped by universal policies that overlook local realities and needs. Our collaborative research, involving an academic team and government partners, sought context-specific solutions for supporting breastfeeding in a provincial government in South Africa. Using a participatory approach, we conducted qualitative interviews with 12 government-employed mothers and senior managers. We identified three key challenges to workplace breastfeeding support: (1) Lack of awareness and communicating of reliable information on maternity and breastfeeding rights, (2) Workplace cultures pressurising mothers into silence, secrecy, and supra-performance that perpetuate breastfeeding as ‘taboo’ at work, and (3) Inadequate context-sensitive and practicable interventions for supporting maternity and breastfeeding at work. Based on these findings, we co-created tailored, practical interventions with the interviewees and refined them iteratively to enhance support for workplace breastfeeding. This research informed updates to a provincial government department policy document on workplace breastfeeding support, moving beyond national legislation to create a breastfeeding-friendly workplace. Our study highlights the value of participatory approaches for the development of context-sensitive solutions for workplace breastfeeding support with implications for organizations, social policy, and future research. Purpose: Meaningful interactions with significant others are crucial for children's well-being, including those with severe to profound intellectual and multiple disabilities. This study aimed to gain more insight into the potential of an ICT-Toolkit in enhancing or contributing to the interaction between parents and their children with complex care needs. Methods: A multiple case study with an AB experimental design was conducted. Four mother-child dyads were observed during eight two-and-a-half-hour home visits. Children between 6 and 16 years with severe to profound intellectual and multiple disabilities were included. A participatory research observation approach was used. Results: Using the ICT-Toolkit compared to the baseline phase stimulated a decrease in the repetitive activities of two of the four dyads. Overall, the activity repertoire of the children and the length of time being engaged in individual activities increased, and the activities together increased in three of the dyads. There were more turn-taking interactions; the children took more initiative to engage their mother in their activity, and the children exhibited more affection when engaging with the ICT-Toolkit items. Three mothers followed their children more in their play, and all mothers were more verbally and physically active in instructing and/or motivating their children. Discussion: All mothers noticed their child's "new" behaviour when interacting with an ICT-Toolkit item. The mothers followed the child's lead when engaged with the ICT-Toolkit. The ICT-Toolkit's added effect may be due to the predictability, uncomplicated and highly perceivable stimuli it provides with minimal effort and maximum effect. IMPLICATION OF REHABILITATION: A technology toolkit contributes to activities and mother-child interactions for children with intensive care needs. The ICT-Toolkit contributes to more turn-taking interactions and more initiative taking by the children to engage their mother in their activity. Children exhibited more affection towards their mothers when engaging with the ICT-Toolkit items. The participation in this study led mothers of children with intensive care needs to mentalise about the needs of their child and how their behaviour may influence the behaviour of their child. AbstractThis paper explores the intricate relationship between people who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and their AAC devices. Drawing upon insights from phenomenology, I conducted a modified systematic review to explore the enduring phenomenon of low AAC device adoption and as a means to unravel the moments of embodiment and disembodiment experienced by people who use AAC with their devices. The discussion begins with an introduction to phenomenology as a philosophical inquiry and the guiding principles I employed to explore the phenomenon, namely, parte extra parte and object embodiment. Subsequently, I analyze the hegemony of a device-centric approach within the AAC landscape and delve into the first-person experiences of people who use AAC in living with their devices. Lastly, I discuss the embodiment and disembodiment of people who use AAC with their devices, conceptualize the interrelationship between them, and provide future directions for a more holistic and participatory AAC development and investigation that centers on the lived experiences of people who use AAC. AbstractIn our paper, we focus on the relationship between female civic engagement and subjective well-being. Based on qualitative interviews and participant observation in a rural area in southern Japan, we illustrate three ways in which these two phenomena can be conceptually linked. Against a background of ongoing demographic decline in many parts of rural Japan, we discuss how women have been building networks to engage in their neighbourhoods and how their joint activities are closely linked to their living environments and their roles within the community. Our analysis of their activities shows that (a) making others happy, (b) acting for oneself, and (c) the process of acting with others all have a beneficial impact on subjective well-being. In this regard, our findings support relational approaches to subjective well-being. More specifically, the reciprocity of well-being within social relationships helps to explain how civic engagement leads to higher well-being in rural Japan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies on bystander behaviour showed that bystanders regularly intervene in conflicts and crime in public in order to de-escalate, yet these studies focus solely on the way citizens manage situations in the absence of police. Bystanders, however, are also present while police officers carry out their work and might help or challenge their performance. Based on 15 interviews with police officers and participant observation during 12 police shifts in the Netherlands, this study provides insights into the way officers perceive bystanders and experience their actions. Police officers describe bystanders as a dilemma they have to face during encounters: they want to convey a positive and fair image of themselves towards bystanders, yet also want to control the situation and show their authority. Customers have become active and engaged with multiple actors outside the hotel, raising new challenges to theory and practice. Therefore, this paper aims to identify the external actors with which customers interact to ascertain which ones foster/hinder customer engagement and value co-creation/destruction. We used qualitative methods (16 in-depth interviews, document analysis, and four participants' observations) gathered from seven regions in Ghana. Data were analyzed using Nvivo12 within a thematic analysis framework designed to identify, analyze, and describe patterns found in data. The study revealed that guests' interactive engagement with multiple actors beyond the hotel environment influences their experience, either fostering or hindering value co-creation. Positive and negative engagement fosters/hinders guests' interactions and the potential for value co-creation/destruction. The study offers a novel connection between customer interactions, engagement, and value co-creation to discover and depict the external actors' actions that foster or hinder customers' experience in the hotel setting. Industry players can use the developed customer interactive engagement framework and value co-creation/destruction actors in tourist and hotel settings to assess their businesses and explore the value they aim to generate. Video diaries are an innovative tool for ethnographic research, contributing to the quality of fieldwork and ethnographic data by giving additional attention to participant voices. Grounded in two fieldwork periods in secondary and higher education, this paper illustrates three key qualities through which video diaries contributed to ethnographic research: (1) Building trusting relationships with participants, (2) providing a space for participant autonomy, and (3) being a medium of self-explication and truth-telling. In video diaries, participants exercised free speech, providing a widely unmediated, personal perspective on their professional identity, roles, and relationships. This personal perspective allowed participants to contribute to trusting on their own terms, which mitigated face-work – especially when talking about conflicts and challenges – and provided additional entry points for conversations, enabling deep dialogue and understanding. In light of the growing demand for audio description (AD) in China, both in quantitative and qualitative terms, coupled with the persistent shortage of qualified AD scriptwriters, this article advocates for AD translation from Spanish to Chinese, a type of indirect translation, as an alternative approach to addressing this issue, potentially benefiting from localisation techniques (Jankowska et al., 2017; Remael & Vercauteren, 2010). This article presents the development of a set of guidelines for localising AD scripts from Spanish into Chinese, resulting from triangulating a corpus study comparing Chinese and Spanish ADs, interviews with Chinese AD providers, a reception study with end-users, and participant observation through a field study. Additionally, it discusses three controversial elements related to AD scriptwriting, along with four norms that guide the script writers' decision-making process, which must be considered when localising AD scripts in Chinese. This research elaborates the nexus of disability-migration-education through a multidisciplinary investigation of intersectional barriers faced by Syrian youth with disabilities during their access to, and study at higher education (HE) institutions in Turkey. HE inclusivity for Syrian students with disabilities (SSD) is analysed in terms of the main administrative, societal, and structural barriers. The methodological design of this study applies a human rights-based approach to education, migration and disability in company with participatory action research methodology. Findings are based on data collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observations, institutional visits, and multi-stakeholder workshops addressing disability and migration-based experiences of SSD in 2018 and 2019 in Istanbul, Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep. Information and experiences are collected from SSD, NGOs in the field of migration and disability, governmental bodies, and HE institutions. Our findings showed that various legal, administrative and cultural barriers, and structural inequalities make access to HE more difficult for refugees with disabilities. Despite these, SSD have success stories in accessing HE as a result of their hard work and courage. This article builds on methodological literature addressing ways in which qualitative research interviewing can utilise principles derived from psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, focussing on the sharing of interpretations and formulations with research participants. We review the accounts of different researchers who have considered the sharing of formulations and more formalised quasi-dynamic interpretative comments in this type of psychoanalytically informed interview research. Via this review and considering our experience as practitioner researchers, we suggest that careful reflection is required. The notion of interpretative work in psychoanalytic psychotherapy is potentially easily misapprehended because the term interpretation can refer to a range of (at times, very different) practices. Moreover, the terms of reference for dialogue in research and psychotherapy are fundamentally different for those engaged in them; an interpretation or feedback will not likely be received in the same fashion in a research interview as it would be in a psychotherapy session. Therefore, would-be research participants should be informed about the type of interview being used, with questions asked about their expectations. Intersectional approaches that acknowledge the participatory needs of disabled refugees are missing in policies and regulations. For more than one year, interviews and participant observation were carried out with three disabled refugee women. Various qualitative methods have been used to understand the women’s everyday lives in an urban area of Sweden. Researching daily activities of young children poses methodological challenges that necessitate diverse approaches for effective inquiry. This method article introduces a new digital participatory research method – Living Journals – to study young children's everyday digital media practices at home in Azerbaijan. Employing this method, mothers actively produced multimodal data in situ, responding to prompts sent by the researcher, which were subsequently turned into journals in print and digital formats. Utilising these journals, participant families were encouraged to provide commentary on their respective journals and those of other participating children. This method has a significant capacity to yield metatextual, multivocal, multimodal, and multifunctional data, thereby enhancing the richness of the dataset and facilitating nuanced interpretations. Delving into the intricacies of the method and its advantages, the article elaborates on its procedures, significance, and limitations. The method emerges as a valuable approach, offering a participatory and contextually sensitive means for remotely generating data, allowing researchers to develop textually and visually rich datasets. A citizens’ jury is a method of deliberative action research to determine the perspectives of community members regarding complex healthcare issues. This approach is a novel paradigm in settings such as Uganda. Implementation of electronic medical records brings the potential to use routinely collected data for health research. It is important to understand community perspectives. A two-day citizens’ jury was hosted in Kampala. ‘Expert witnesses’ provided topical evidence. Three creative arts techniques were implemented to enable interaction and reflection. First, a local Ugandan film team produced summaries. Secondly, a local artist painted emerging themes. Finally, a drama team comprised community members living with HIV developed an interactive sketch highlighting key points. This creative methodology enabled vibrant interaction. Jurors reached a unanimous verdict that with appropriate consent and data protection, electronic medical data could be used for research. Forced migrants are often presented in public and private discourse from a reductive perspective focusing solely on their vulnerability and their status as refugees, without acknowledging other aspects of their identity and life history. This article investigates how refugee-background participants in qualitative research interviews drew on the chronotopes of home to construct a narrative of origin that foregrounded diverse aspects of their identity and emphasised their lived experiences in a fuller sense. In their narratives, participants contested representations of their home countries and of historical events, as well as representations of themselves, to challenge reductive identity constructions. Further, the narratives suggested that while widely known, mass-mediated chronotopes may assist in initial orientation to a location and event or time period, these generally provide a limited, and sometimes a highly contestable, representation of reality. We share the results of interviews and participant observations conducted in South Texas in spring of 2020 and summer of 2021 to understand how local authorities manage the issue of migrant deaths. Drawing on fifty-seven interviews and observations of local stakeholders from law enforcement and first responders to nonprofit organizations, United States Border Patrol (USBP) agents, and others, three experiences emerged. First, USBP both capacitates and limits local ability to respond to migrant deaths. Second, local jurisdictions feel a sense of impotence as a consequence of overwhelming migrant decedent caseloads, often leading to what we have termed an occupational paralysis. Third, failing to recognize migrant deaths as a regional phenomenon throughout South Texas hinders interior counties from receiving needed support. In our discussion we reflect on the experiences our interlocutors shared with us and the degree to which long-standing U.S. prevention through deterrence policy has configured the Texas–Mexico border into a necropolitical landscape, in the sense that U.S. Southwestern border enforcement, infrastructure, and the environment itself have a spatial arrangement that relegates migrant lives “outside the normal state of law” (Mbembe, 13), and funnels them toward death. This research aims to develop an in-depth understanding of empathic perspective-taking in design teaching. A pedagogical probe study was utilised to obtain design teachers’ insights into adopting allocentric views by taking the perspectives of design students, users, and materials during design conversations. This participatory research study enables design teachers and supporting teaching staff to contribute to the research process by self-documenting actively and reflecting on their teaching approaches. The findings show that the perspective-taking of design teachers relies on distinctive pedagogical intentions, cultivated from intrinsic concerns and personal motivations, that can spark motivation and inspiration in the design learning processes of students. This paper adopts a geosemiotics perspective to the study of top-down views produced by drone hobbyists to explore how they challenge or disrupt traditional meanings associated with verticality. Using a dataset of 748 drone visuals collected from two months of participant observation on social media platforms, we identify four unique functions of top-down views: as abstract art, as transformations of the mundane, as playful mapping and as dronies. Through prototypical examples, we demonstrate how civilian drones have created new forms of visualising and embodying our world, acting as intermediaries between humans and nature and, thus, challenging persisting negative associations of the link between verticality and power. Overall, our findings encourage a reappraisal of the drone as an object and see it instead as a complex material assemblage of the sky, which has the ability to extend our perception, modify our geographical imaginations and multiply our possible interpretations of the top-down view.
