How did one of the most historically automobile-dependent US cities end up with the first large-scale modern US bike-sharing system? The story reveals that it is less about transportation demand planning and engineering and more about the principles of what has been termedtactical urbanism. The tactical urbanism movement revolves around the idea that temporary interventions can help one understand what interventions might work in a particular context and lay the foundation for more permanent ones. That the first large-scale bike-sharing system in the US began as such an intervention is quite remarkable and illustrative of the potential of this strategy to build public aspiration and political will via temporary, short-term empirical success. Beginning with preparations for the 2008 Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Denver, Colorado, this paper details what went into creating the temporary Freewheel!n bike-share system and how that was able to be leveraged into a permanent bike-sharing system, Denver B-Cycle, two years later. Consistent with the characteristics of tactical urbanism, the partnerships formed with the temporary DNC implementation served as a catalyst. This paper examines predictors of cancer-specific distress among posttreatment adult leukemia and lymphoma survivors (LLS). Using a survey mailed to LLS in the Colorado Central Cancer Registry (N = 477), the authors developed a multivariable risk profile for distress. Thirty one percent of LLS reported indicators of distress. Significantly higher distress was associated with younger age (p < 0.001) in bivariate analyses. The risk profile included fear of recurrence, financial burden, and younger age. Distress did not attenuate based on time since treatment completion and may persist up to 4 years posttreatment, suggesting a need for intervention, particularly among high-risk LLS. Using in-depth interviews, this paper explores the nature and sources of cancer-specific distress among 51 posttreatment adult leukemia and lymphoma survivors (LLS), focusing on the role of lifespan stage in shaping reported stressors. LLS (all ages) reported physical aftereffects of cancer treatment, with reported sources of emotional and financial distress varying by lifespan stage. Young adult survivors (18–39) reported a greater number of distress sources. Studies demonstrate a relationship between built environment features and walking among youth. However, most research has focused on measuring objective features of the built environment, and fewer studies have looked at the more subjective features such as design quality that may influence how youth experience walking. Furthermore, many instruments that measure design quality are based on expert approaches; few incorporate user-based (youth) feedback. In this pilot study, the authors used focus group methods with a youth panel (2 groups with 16 total participants) to investigate user-based opinion of design quality variables of the built environment that impact the walking behaviour of youth. Background: Medical students participate in a longitudinal (3-year) primary care preceptorship to assist them in developing skills in interviewing and examining patients in an ambulatory care setting. Purpose: To identify from a student's perspective important context and process issues in a longitudinal preceptorship. Methods: The investigators used an "editing" style of analysis to identify significant themes across 24 medical student focus groups held between October 1995 and December 1997. Results: Significant themes emerged from the data analysis that describe important features of what makes the preceptorship work for students. The main themes are active teaching, active learning, a trusting relationship, sufficient time, and a shared understanding of preceptorship objectives. The potential benefits to students in an enhanced learning environment are comfort, confidence, responsibility, skills, knowledge, reinforcement, learning opportunities, teaching opportunities, and models for practice. Conclusions: We offer recommendations for enhancing longitudinal preceptorships for preceptors, students, and leaders in medical education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
