People with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PWH) are at an increased risk for impaired everyday functioning and they may also experience poor awareness of their functional status. This study identified factors associated with (1) subjective and objective instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) and (2) awareness of functional capacity in PWH. In this cross-sectional study, 236 PWH completed a neurobehavioral assessment, including self-report and performance-based measures of IADLs. Multiple regressions were performed to identify demographic, personality, and cognitive factors contributing to subjective and objective evaluation of everyday functioning, as well as discrepancy between self-report and performance-based measures of IADLs. Results indicated that increased depression was associated with worsened self-report of everyday functioning but not performance of IADLs. Cognitive function and age were associated with IADL performance. Most participants (58.1%) demonstrated a discrepancy between self-report and actual performance of IADLs. Worse processing speed was correlated with greater discrepancy. Inaccurate self-reporters had worse overall cognitive functioning and lower levels of personality traits, including openness, conscientiousness, and agreeableness. In conclusion, self-report and actual performance of IADLs in PWH is influenced by different factors. Formal social participation significantly impacts health and well-being, potentially mitigating cognitive decline, although not consistently across all studies. Existing research often focuses solely on baseline participation levels, and age-related differences have primarily been explored among the Asian population. Therefore, this longitudinal study aims to assess the association between formal social participation and cognition across different age groups in individuals aged 50+ living in Europe and Israel, while capturing the dynamic nature of formal social participation. We use data from three waves (four, six, and eight) of the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), comprising 85,601 respondents. Linear mixed-effects models were applied. The results show that participation in formal social activities mitigates cognitive decline in middle-aged and older adults, especially among those aged 70 to 79 and 80+. The purpose of the present study was to examine management of DRA.In semi-structured qualitative interviews, 50 community-dwelling adults (58–89 years old, M = 70.80, SD = 6.02) without dementia diagnoses reflected on their thoughts and feelings about dementia. A reflexive inductive thematic approach was used to examine ways people managed DRA.We identified five themes related to managing DRA: monitoring cognitive status (e.g., self-monitoring or objective assessment); active coping strategies (e.g., using external reminders, normalizing age-related change); interpersonal relationships and support (e.g., anticipating benefit of support from others); planning and preparing for potential outcomes (e.g., securing power of attorney, saying goodbyes); and personal responsibility to manage risk or accept diagnosis (e.g., lifestyle factors to reduce dementia risk, thereby reducing risk for burdening others).Findings suggest internal and external means for coping with DRA that are likely to vary in degrees of usefulness. This study provides insights into the self-directed learning (SDL) abilities of middle-aged and older adult learners engaged in senior adult education. The study aims to explore both the levels of SDL abilities and the factors associated with these abilities. Additionally, this study delves into the demographic variations in SDL abilities, considering factors such as gender, age, and educational attainment. While active aging encourages middle-aged and older individuals’ engagement in social, physical, and intellectual activities, existing SDL scales mainly focus on healthcare, neglecting the learning needs of middle-aged and older adult learners in fostering active aging. A cross-sectional study approach was adopted. A purposive sample of 866 middle-aged and older adult learners (80.4% female) enrolled in senior learning centers. The data collected from the participants revealed an average SRSSDL score of 3.36 out of 5, indicating a moderate to high level of SDL proficiency. Furthermore, the results indicate significant differences between age groups and educational attainment levels. The study can help educators identify middle-aged and older adult learners enrolled in senior learning centers who lack SDL ability and design tailor-made educational interventions to promote self‐learning management and/or enable active aging. PurposeMethodsResultsConclusionAssociations between age at menarche and myopia have been observed in studies that included older women. Furthermore, pregnancy-related hormone surges in young women are associated with short-term changes in refractive error, although the long-term effects are less known. This study explored associations of age at menarche and parity with refractive error and ocular biometry in young women, and the relationship between age at menarche and refractive error in middle-aged adults for comparison.Community-based young women underwent eye examinations at 20 and 28 years old. Information on age at menarche and parity were collected prospectively. The older cohort underwent an eye examination and information on age at menarche was self-reported retrospectively. Cross-sectional associations between age at menarche and myopia were explored in both cohorts. Associations between parity and 8-year longitudinal change in refractive error measures were explored in the young cohort.The cross-sectional analyses comprised 429 young (age 18–22) and 1,818 older (age 46–69) women. No associations were found between age at menarche and myopia or ocular biometry measures in either cohort. The longitudinal analysis (n = 269 women) revealed that for each pregnancy carried to full term, there rate of lens thickening increased by 0.004 mm/year (95% CI = 0.002–0.007). No other associations between parity and refractive error or ocular biometry were found.There is no association between age at menarche and myopia or its related measures. AbstractObjectiveMethodsResultsConclusionSocial participation is essential for the health of older adults. Formal volunteering can reduce loneliness and is associated with numerous positive health outcomes. Older adults have limited resources to meet their social and well-being needs. We explore factors contributing to the well-being of middle-aged and older adults who engage in formal volunteering using a qualitative social network approach.Between 2022 and 2023, qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 members of social clubs in Germany, aged 45–80 (mean age 62 years). Thirteen participants were retired. Eight interviewees were female and twenty were male. Participants created unstructured egocentric network maps of individuals or organisations important to their well-being. Participants reflected on their social networks using these maps, which allowed for deeper insights into changing network dynamics. The data were analysed using thematic analysis.We developed six themes: intrapersonal, interpersonal and social network characteristics affecting well-being, self-fulfilment, feeling indispensable and unfulfilled expectations. Formal social participation, particularly through volunteering, contributed significantly to the well-being.Formal volunteering can aid successful role substitution and compensation, especially after retirement. ObjectivesMethodResultsConclusionTechnology has the potential to increase access to evidence-based insomnia treatment. Patient preferences/perceptions of automated digital cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia (CBTI) and telehealth-delivered CBTI remain largely unexplored among middle-aged and older adults. Using a qualitative approach, the current study describes patients' reasons for participating in the clinical trial, preferences for digital CBTI (dCBTI) versus therapist-led CBTI, patient attitudes toward dCBTI, and patient attitudes toward telehealth-delivered therapist-led CBTI.Middle-aged and older adults (N = 80) completed a semi-structured interview before CBTI exposure. Qualitative responses were coded, and themes were inductively extracted.Most (62.5%) of the participants expressed a preference for therapist-led CBTI to dCBTI. Convenience was the most commonly reported advantage of dCBTI (n = 55) and telehealth-delivered CBTI (n = 65). Decreasing transit time and pandemic-related health concerns were identified as advantages to dCBTI and telehealth-delivered CBTI. Lack of human connection and limited personalization were perceived as disadvantages of dCBTI. Only three participants reported technological barriers to dCBTI and telehealth-delivered CBTI.Findings suggest that, despite an overall preference for therapist-led treatment, most middle-aged and older adults are open to dCBTI. PurposeMethodsResultsConclusionsThe aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of diagnosed vision problems and to examine the association of single and multiple chronic conditions with vision problems among middle-aged and older adults in India.The study utilized data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) Wave 1, (2017–18). Descriptive statistics along with bivariate and multivariable analyses were conducted to achieve the study objectives.The prevalence of diagnosed vision problems in the sampled population was 48.2%. The older adults (60+ years) (55.3%) had shown a greater prevalence of vision problems than the middle-aged individuals (41%). Among chronic conditions, hypertension, diabetes, chronic lung diseases, chronic heart diseases, bone related diseases, psychiatric disorders, and high cholesterol were significantly associated with vision problems in the case of both middle-aged and older adults. Furthermore, odds of experiencing vision problems according to the presence of multimorbidity were higher in the middle-aged population [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.986; confidence interval (CI):1.855–2.126] than in the older population [AOR = 1.746; CI:1.644–1.854].Middle-aged and older adults with chronic illnesses and multimorbidity were at greater risk of vision problems. The present study assessed whether dementia worry is associated with adults’ subjective cognitive difficulties, and whether any associations are moderated by age. Participants were 477 adults aged 18–90 years. They completed standard, subjective measures of dementia worry and everyday cognitive difficulties (i.e. attention, language, verbal and visual-spatial memory, and visual-perceptual ability). Moderated regression analyses included dementia worry as a predictor of specific cognitive difficulties, and age as a moderator. Covariates included gender, trait cognitive and somatic anxiety, general aging-related anxiety, depression, stress, mental health treatment status, and health status. Greater overall dementia worry, and specifically more frequent dementia worry, were both associated with greater attentional difficulty in middle-aged and older adults, but not in young adults. Cognitions about developing dementia in reaction to memory lapses were also associated with greater cognitive difficulties across the adult lifespan for multiple cognitive domains. Results highlight a robust relationship between dementia worry and subjective attentional difficulties, especially in middle-aged and older adults. Worry frequency is also more influential with adult aging. A cognitive or meta-cognitive mechanism may underlie subjective cognitive concerns across the adult lifespan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the core of research on language change over the lifespan is the panel study, a methodology that involves recording the same speakers at more than one point in time. This article provides an overview of the Sydney Speaks Lifespan Corpus (SSLC), a unique panel study of five Greek-background and five Italian-background Australians who were first recorded as teenagers between 1977 and 1981 and recorded again in 2019 as middle-aged adults. With its representation of ethnic minority speakers and expansion to conversational speech, the SSLC represents an important development in the availability and scope of panel corpora based in Australia. It also enhances the diversification of lifespan research, an area where speakers from ethnic minority backgrounds in diverse communities are underrepresented. This article describes each stage of the corpus’ compilation, situates the corpus in its social context and discusses the key finding that panellists’ movements over the lifespan are tied to their earlier positions relative to change. Epidural Hematoma (EDH) is a common condition of traumatic brain injury. It has a good prognosis if prompt surgical intervention is conducted. There is a dearth of studies on neuropsychological assessment of executive functioning exclusively in post-operative EDH patients. Moreover, age as a variable in determining executive functions in patients post-head injury, has been studied mostly in the older adults. This cross-sectional case-control study assessed Executive Functions (EF) in 62 post-surgery patients with EDH and compared 57 healthy controls (HC) using standardized assessment tools of sustained attention, speed, working memory, fluency, set-shifting, perseveration, planning, and response inhibition. Further, executive functions in two phases of adulthood, viz. Early Adulthood (20–39 years) and Middle Adulthood (40–60 years) were compared in the EDH group (E-EDH and M-EDH) and HC (E-HC and M-HC). A two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and correlational analysis was conducted. Results showed a trend where the M-EDH group performed significantly poorer on executive function tests (viz a viz., time taken, errors, and correct responses), followed by E-EDH, M-HC, and E-HC. The main effect of age was found significant on Digit Symbol, Color Trail 1, N-Back 2, Animal Naming, and Stroop Effect (p < 0.01 level) while N-Back 1, WCST-PE, and Tower of London (p < 0.05 level). The findings have significant clinical and therapeutic implications. In addition, it gives guidance regarding planning specific neuropsychological tests and rehabilitation targeting specific areas of executive functions decline due to age in EDH post-surgery patients. Objective: HIV is associated with elevated performance-based cognitive intra-individual variability (IIV) in the laboratory that can reflect difficulty regulating cognitive resources over time (i.e., cognitive fluctuations) and disrupt everyday functioning. Whether persons living with HIV (PLWH) experience appreciable cognitive fluctuations in their daily lives is unclear. This study examined the presence of cognitive fluctuations and their relationship to everyday functioning in PLWH. Methods: Participants were 145 PLWH and 61 seronegative individuals age ≥ 50 years who completed a self-report version of the Mayo Fluctuations Scale (MFS), structured psychiatric interview, medical evaluation, and well-validated measures of mood, cognitive symptoms, and activities of daily living (ADLs). A confirmatory factor analysis of the MFS yielded three factors, including a 7-item cognitive fluctuations scale. Results: Univariable analyses showed that HIV was associated with moderately higher MFS Cognitive Fluctuation subscale scores (d = 0.46), but this effect was no longer significant a multiple regression model that included medical comorbidities and affective disorders, which emerged as unique predictors. Of clinical relevance, higher MFS Cognitive Fluctuation subscale scores were independently associated with more frequent cognitive symptoms and dependence in ADLs in the full sample. Conclusions: Higher frequency of self-perceived cognitive fluctuations disrupts management of ADLs among middle-aged and older adults independent of HIV status and general cognitive symptoms. Depression and social isolation increase risk for executive function declines and are among the top five modifiable risk factors for dementia. However, the interrelationships between depression, social isolation and executive function are not well established. Further evidence is needed to inform strategies to promote executive function and independence in older age. We examined whether social isolation mediated the association between depression and executive function in community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults and whether this association was modified by age and sex. Adults aged 45 to 85 years from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) Comprehensive cohort were followed over three years (complete case analysis, n = 14,133). Baseline depressive symptoms, a history of clinical depression, and functional social isolation (perceived lack of social support) were self-reported. Executive function at follow-up was a composite measure of five cognitive tests. Conditional process analysis assessed the mediating effects of functional social isolation across age group and sex, adjusted for sociodemographic and health covariates. Functional social isolation significantly mediated the association of depressive symptoms (proportion mediated [PM] = 8.0%) or clinical depression (PM = 17.5%) with executive function only among women aged 75+ years. Functional social isolation explains a proportion of the total effect of depressive symptoms or clinical depression on executive function in women aged 75 and older. Although reverse causation cannot be ruled out, our findings suggest that interventions that reduce functional social isolation or depression in older women may promote executive function. Background and Aims: The burden of alcohol-related complications is high and rising. However, there are notable deficiencies in comprehensive epidemiological study focusing on cardiovascular complications from alcohol, especially among young and middle-aged adults. We thus aimed to determine the burden of these conditions in young and middle-aged adults globally. Methods and Results: We used data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 and analysed the mortality and disability-adjusted life years of alcohol-associated cardiovascular complications in young and middle-aged adults. The findings were classified by sex, region, country, and Sociodemographic Index (SDI). The highest age-standardized death rates (ASDR) were observed in stroke 0.84 (95% UI 0.60–1.09), followed by alcoholic cardiomyopathy 0.57 (95% UI 0.47–0.66) per 100,000 population. The overall burden of alcohol-associated cardiovascular complications decreased globally but increased in atrial fibrillation and hypertensive heart disease. Regionally, most regions underwent a decrease in ASDR, but an increase was observed in Southeast Asia (+2.82%), Western Pacific (+1.48%), low-middle (+1.81%), and middle SDI (+0.75%) countries. Nevertheless, the ASDR and ASDALYs were highest in Europe. Conclusions: The impact of alcohol-associated atrial fibrillation and hypertensive heart disease has increased over the last decades. Regarding region, the burden in Europe and the rising burden in Asia, require immediate public health policy to lessen these cardiovascular complications from alcohol in young and middle-aged adults. ObjectivesMethodsResultsConclusionsThe aim of this study was to analyze how farmworkers are represented in stock photos available in commercial libraries for use in agricultural health and safety education materials.We searched for images in five commercial stock photo libraries using the terms “farmworkers” and “women farmworkers” in April 2022. We used quantitative content analysis. We coded each image for containing a visible face, age, gender, skin tone, work activity, mechanization, presence of hazards, technology use, and protective equipment/clothing after establishing inter-coder reliability. We used descriptive statistics to characterize the available stock photos.We identified stock photos (n = 127) in three databases (Adobe Stock Images, Canva, and Getty Images). Two databases (Microsoft Office Image Library and Pixabay) had no relevant images at the time of the search. Only half of the photos analyzed contained a face. Light skin tones and young or middle-aged adults were more common. A majority of farming activities represented in photos were manual tasks (e.g., harvesting) with few depictions of equipment, hazards, and protective equipment/clothing.Health and safety professionals tasked with developing materials for education in agricultural settings face a severe lack of imagery pertinent to the realistic conditions of farmworkers in the United States. In the databases we reviewed, photos displaying human faces, photos showing a range of skin tones and ages, and photos displaying an array of different farm hazards are likely not sufficient for material development. Health and safety professionals may benefit from sharing photos from their own work with other professionals and allocating resources for professional photo shoots in their material development projects. AbstractObjectivesMethodResultsConclusionLoneliness has been associated with psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) in the general population, but the mechanisms underlying this association are poorly understood. Theoretical models, corroborated by empirical findings, signify the key role of biased cognition in both loneliness and psychosis. This study tested whether two cognitive biases – Selective Attention to Threat (ATB) and External Attribution Bias (EAB) – account for the association between loneliness and PLEs.A convenience sample (n = 357) of middle-aged and older adults (aged 40+) was recruited online from the UK population. The parallel mediation model with two the aforementioned cognitive biases as mediators was tested.A mediation effect between loneliness and PLEs via ATB (ab1 = 0.441, 95% CI = [0.264, 0.646]) and EAB (ab2 = 0.354, 95% CI [0.124, 0.627] was established. This model remained significant after controlling for the current symptoms of anxiety and depression.Greater loneliness was associated with a higher rate of PLEs in the sample of middle-aged and older adults. AbstractTobacco use poses significant public health concerns, linked to various mental and physical health outcomes. Iraq has a high prevalence of smoking, predominantly with traditional cigarettes, but there is also growing popularity of electronic cigarettes and waterpipes among younger and middle-aged adults. This study aims to explore the perceptions and usage of traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and waterpipes among this population in Iraq. A descriptive study was conducted among 402 young and middle-aged adults (50.25% females), aged between 18 and 45 years, with a mean age of 25.88 (SD = 7.27). For the data collection, an online questionnaire was developed utilizing distribution channels on common social networking platforms. The results showed that 41.79% of respondents have used traditional cigarettes, while 31.1% of participants reported that they use electronic cigarettes. Ninety-four per cent of respondents acknowledged that they use waterpipes. The results also indicated that a significant proportion believe that using electronic cigarettes is either much more harmful or more harmful than traditional cigarettes. Participants commonly perceived all three types of tobacco products as highly harmful, including secondhand smoke, addictive qualities, and popularity among peers. Additionally, significant differences in perceptions emerged between smokers and nonsmokers regarding electronic cigarettes and traditional cigarettes, although no such differences were observed for waterpipes. These findings contribute to understanding the attitudes toward different forms of tobacco use among respondents, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to address the perceived harm associated with tobacco products. Purpose: Midlife adults have been estimated to spend over half of their waking time engaging in sedentary behavior, and greater sedentary behavior has been associated with a reduced likelihood of successful aging. Moreover, more than one-quarter of midlife adults report chronic pain, and there is reason to believe that pain may contribute to sedentary behavior among this population. The goal of these analyses was to test associations between self-reported increases in pain during activity and subsequent sedentary behavior among a sample of midlife adults with chronic pain. Methods: Participants included 200 midlife adults (age 50–64) who reported chronic pain and completed an online prospective survey. Activity-induced pain was assessed at baseline and total time spent engaging in sedentary behavior was assessed at baseline, 1-week, and 4-week follow-up assessments. Results: Activity-induced pain predicted greater sedentary behavior at 1-week (p <.05) and 4-week (p <.01) follow-up assessments, even after controlling for chronic pain intensity and baseline sedentary behavior. Conclusions: Activity-induced pain may represent an important mechanism underlying sedentary behavior among midlife adults with chronic pain, and programs designed to reduce sedentary behavior among this population may benefit from tailoring to account for the antithetical influence of activity-induced pain. Indeed, the current findings suggest that mitigating the extent to which pain increases during activity may be more important than reducing overall pain intensity when attempting to decrease sedentary behavior among this population. This article considers the media representation of two women who left the west for Islamic State (IS) in the mid-2010s: from France, Christine Rivière, nicknamed "Mamie Djihad" (Granny Jihad); and from Britain, Sally Jones, known as "The White Widow". Both were white, middle-aged mothers, born and raised in their respective countries, who converted late in life and left behind established lives and (adult) children to join IS. While much has been written on the migration of western women to IS territory, scholarship has focused on younger women and girls who have been represented as groomed and vulnerable to IS propaganda. These two "unlikely jihadists" profoundly unsettled commonsense ideas about who was vulnerable to radicalisation, and, more troublingly, their defections could potentially be read as statements on the desirability of life in the west vis-à-vis IS's model. Using Critical Discourse Analysis of leading French and British news media, the article demonstrates how journalists represented both women as always-already outside their respective nations through two key narratives: a gendered discourse of abject motherhood and an intersectional discourse that constructed them as abject inside Others. These narratives worked to suture the ideological rupture caused by these women, who were at first glance typically French/British, by demonstrating that they had actually always been on the margins of the national community and had always been dangerous to the nation. We investigated age differences in mental time travel by comparing young, middle-aged and older adults, with equal number of participants in each age decade, from age 22 to 79. Participants generated and phenomenologically rated one experienced and one imagined past event, and two imagined future events. The results showed event type effects with richer phenomenology for experienced than imagined events, but no age group differences. Specifically, experienced events were more vivid, detailed, and were re-lived in the mind more than the other event types. All events were highly central to life, revealing no event type effects on centrality. For both past events, older age groups generated more distant events. There were no age group differences for temporal distance for the two future events. Both future events were from a near future. Objective: Adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) face an increased risk for cognitive decline and dementia. Diabetes-related and vascular risk factors have been linked to cognitive decline using detailed neuropsychological testing; however, it is unclear if cognitive screening batteries can detect cognitive changes associated with aging in T1D. Method: 1,049 participants with T1D (median age 59 years; range 43–74) from the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), and the follow-up Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) study, completed the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery (NIHTB-C) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Neuropsychological assessments, depression, glycated hemoglobin levels (HbA1c), severe hypoglycemia, T1D complications, and vascular risk factors were assessed repeatedly over 32 years to determine associations with current NIHTB-C performance. Available cognitive data was clinically adjudicated to determine cognitive impairment status. Results: NIHTB-C scores had moderate associations (r = 0.36–0.53) with concurrently administered neuropsychological tests. In multivariate models, prior severe hypoglycemic episodes, depression symptoms, nephropathy, lower BMI, and higher HbA1c and LDL cholesterol were associated with poorer NIHTB-C Fluid Cognition Composite scores. The NIHTB-C adequately detected adjudicated cognitive impairment (Area Under the Curve = 0.86; optimal cut score ≤90). The MoCA performed similarly (Area Under the Curve = 0.83; optimal cut score ≤25). Conclusions: The NIHTB-C is sensitive to the cognitive effects of diabetes-related and vascular risk factors, correlated with neuropsychological testing, and accurately detects adjudicated cognitive impairment. This study examined whether physically active middle-aged (50-64 years) and older adults (65-80 years) demonstrate age-related ankle proprioceptive decline relative to younger counterparts. Empirical data indicate that ankle proprioception declines with aging and such sensory decline negatively affects balance. Using a passive motion apparatus, we employed a psychophysical forced-choice paradigm in which the ankle was passively plantarflexed to a reference position (15° or 25°) and a comparison position that was always smaller than the reference. Subsequently, participants indicated which position was more plantarflexed. As outcome measures of ankle position sense acuity, a just-noticeable-difference (JND) threshold and the uncertainty area (UA) were derived from the psychometric stimulus-response difference function for each participant. The JND threshold is a measure of proprioceptive bias and UA constitutes a measure of precision. The main results are: First, at the 15° reference, most middle-aged (74%) and older adults (71%) had thresholds within the range of the young adults. The respective median JND threshold of young adults was statistically lower when compared to both older groups. Second, no differences between age groups were observed at the 25° reference. Third, no age-related differences were found for UA at either reference. These data indicate that physically active aging adults may be spared from age-related decline in ankle position sense and that age-related differences emerge for small ankle displacements. Recent World Health Organization records show that hypertension is more common in Africa than in other parts of the world, and remains a major common risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, stroke, renal diseases, and death. However, little is known about hypertension management strategies among people in rural areas. Therefore, this phenomenological study aimed to investigate knowledge of hypertension management strategies among middle-aged adults in rural areas of Anambra state. Focus group discussions were used to collect data from 40 middle-aged adults (20 males and 20 females). The data were analysed thematically. Results showed that the participants were all aware of hypertension but lacked in-depth knowledge of disease management strategies. Most of the participants did not believe that engaging in regular physical exercise/activity, and other factors like reduction in salt and alcohol intake could help in controlling high blood pressure. Social workers who are also social service providers are needed to raise awareness among middle-aged people in rural areas about hypertension management strategies. This can be done through the provision of social services like education, health services, and transport services, as this will go a long way in helping rural dwellers gain more knowledge of hypertension management strategies. With the provision of health services, the rural population will not only know management strategies for hypertension but will also be able to check their blood pressure regularly, while transport services will make it possible for the rural population who do not have health centres in their community and means of transporting themselves to the neighbouring community for treatment to do so. Future research should focus on the importance of welfare/home visits as an avenue for awareness creation on hypertension management strategies, as this will be an avenue for the provision of better social services for people in rural areas and an improvement in social service research. In recent decades, automation has become increasingly integrated into knowledge work environments, i.e., jobs that require specialized skills for task completion. Some research has shown that automation may reduce cognitive workload. However, other work reports that increasing automation does not always lower cognitive workload. These conflicting results suggest that further investigation is needed to identify factors that influence the relationship between automation use and cognitive workload. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate how two potential moderators, task complexity and age, influence that relationship. A total of 24 younger and 24 middle-aged adults performed an object identification task that resembled a baggage scanning procedure conducted by airport security personnel. The task was manipulated by varying the level of automation (4 increasing levels) that provided support in identifying objects of interest as well as the complexity of task (two types: component and coordinative). In addition, participants completed a pattern identification and sorting memory task, which helped emulate a knowledge work environment. Performance (i.e., object identification accuracy, average completion time, pattern identification accuracy, and sorting memory task accuracy) and subjective workload (NASA-RTLX score) measures were recorded. Participants also rated the usability of the automation. Overall, results showed that while the use of automation was associated with reduced cognitive workload, both types of task complexity negatively affected this relationship such that increased complexity was associated with a decrease in accuracy. Age did not moderate the relationship between automation and cognitive workload, but there were qualitative differences in terms of how the two age groups perceived the utility and usability of the automated systems. Knowledge generated from this research has implications for the design of future human-automation systems and can be used to inform interface design that is tailored to the needs and preferences of different users and use cases. Background: There are few studies that assess the relationship between nutritional status and quality of life in individuals with Parkinson's disease, despite the well-established negative impact of sarcopenia and dynapenia on functional capacity and quality of life. These conditions impair protein-muscular status and are prevalent in individuals with Parkinson's disease. This study aimed to examine the relationship between nutritional status, including body composition, functional capacity, and diagnosis of sarcopenia and dynapenia, and quality-of-life perception in individuals with Parkinson's disease. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted in two Parkinson's disease centers in the northeast of Brazil. The researchers assessed muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical performance to diagnose dynapenia, sarcopenia and functional capacity. Quality of life was estimated using the Parkinson's disease Quality of Life Questionnaire. Results: We found positive correlations between quality of life and variables such as severity and duration of the disease, as well as positive screening for sarcopenia (p<0.001). Negative correlations were observed between quality of life and muscle strength and functional capacity. The study also found that individuals with sarcopenia and dynapenia had significantly worse quality-of-life scores compared to those who did not have these nutritional outcomes (p <0.05; p <0.001). Conclusions: The presence of sarcopenia, dynapenia, low gait speed, disease duration, and severity had an impact on higher scores in the Parkinson's Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire, indicating a worsening perception of quality of life. Accumulating evidence suggests a substantial prevalence of mental health disorders worldwide and the association between psychological distress and mental disorders. However, the mechanisms underlying this association are underexplored. Using longitudinal data, this study examined coping strategies as a potential mechanism. Participants (N = 2,333) from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) completed psychosocial and mental health surveys over 19 years. A parallel mediation model was used to test the direct association between psychological distress (baseline) and self-reported mental disorders (17–19 years follow-up) and the indirect associations via coping strategies (8–11 years follow-up), controlling for demographics and baseline self-reported mental disorders. Psychological distress predicted an increased likelihood of mental disorders later in life. Emotion-focused coping was a significant mediator of this association, but problem-focused coping was not. Psychological distress was positively associated with emotion-focused coping, and emotion-focused coping was positively associated with mental disorders. Psychological distress was negatively associated with problem-focused coping; however, no association was found between problem-focused coping and mental disorders. Findings provide further support for the longitudinal association between psychological distress and mental health disorders and extend prior research by showing the partial mediating role of emotion-focused coping in this association. There is substantial research on the constraint negotiation of leisure, including research on leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and some research exploring different aspects that might affect the constraint negotiation process, including self-efficacy and identity. However, despite longstanding conceptualization and theory, there is a lack of empirical research on the role of facilitators in the constraint negotiation process. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of facilitators in the constraint negotiation of LTPA in a national sample of 1,207 middle-aged and older adults. Path analysis results indicated that the relationship between facilitators and LTPA was fully mediated by constraint and negotiation. These findings provide one of the first empirical studies of facilitators in the constraint negotiation of LTPA and have practical implications for LTPA programming in community settings. Background: Cannabis use is increasing among middle-aged and older US adults, populations that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of cannabis. Risks for adverse effects differ by cannabis use patterns, which have become increasingly heterogeneous. Nevertheless, little is known about age differences in such patterns. Objective: To investigate age differences in cannabis use patterns, comparing younger (age 18–49), middle-aged (age 50–64), and older adults (age ≥65). Methods: A total of 4,151 US adults with past 7-day cannabis consumption completed an online survey (35.1% male; 60.1% female; 4.8% identified as "other"). Regression models examined age differences in cannabis use patterns. Results: Compared to younger adults, middle-aged and older adults were more likely to consume cannabis during evening hours (50–64: adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.98, 95% CI 2.24–3.96; ≥65: aOR = 4.23, 95 CI 2.82–6.35); by only one method (50–64: aOR = 1.67, 95% CI 1.34–2.09; ≥65: aOR = 3.38, 95 CI 2.24–5.09); primarily by smoking as the only method (50–64: aOR = 1.52, 95% CI 1.29–1.78; ≥65: aOR = 2.12, 95 CI 1.64–2.74); but less likely to consume concentrated cannabis products (concentrates) with extremely high %THC (50–64: aOR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.54–0.93; ≥65: aOR = 0.30, 95 CI 0.16–0.55). Age differences in cannabis use patterns were also observed between middle-aged and older adults. Conclusion: Findings suggest that middle-aged and older adults may engage in less risky cannabis use patterns compared to younger groups (e.g. lower likelihood of consuming highly potent concentrates). However, findings also underscore the importance of recognizing risks unique to these older demographics, such as smoking-related health events. Objective: As people with HIV (PWH) age, they are at-risk of developing cognitive impairments compared to their seronegative counterparts. Although speed of processing (SOP) training may help improve this cognitive ability, less work has examined transfer to other cognitive domains. This study examined the effect of SOP training has on secondary cognitive domains in PWH aged 40+ years. Method: In this 3-group 2-year longitudinal study, 216 PWH with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) or borderline HAND were randomized to either: (1) 10 h of SOP training (n = 70); (2) 20 h of SOP training (n = 73); or (3) 10 h of an active control training (n = 73). Participants completed a comprehensive cognitive battery at baseline, immediately after training, and at 1 and 2 years. This battery yielded global and domain specific T-scores as well as a cognitive impairment variable. Generalized linear mixed-effect models were fitted to estimate between-group mean differences at the follow-up time-points adjusted for baseline. Results: No clinically or statistically significant improvements in any of the cognitive outcomes were observed. A sensitivity analysis was conducted; conclusions replicated those of the main analysis, with two exceptions: Global Function T and Psychomotor Speed T showed relevant training improvements among the intervention groups over the control group at the immediate post time point. Conclusions: Although SOP training has been shown to improve cognitive abilities that correspond to driving and mobility, such training has limited therapeutic utility in improving cognition in other domains in PWH with HAND. This study explores how urban middle-aged education program participants can increase their agricultural entrepreneurship volition (AEV) during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea. We examined the direct and indirect effects of formal learning experiences (FLE) and informal learning experiences (ILE) on AEV. Multiple regression, mediation, moderation, and moderated mediation methods using Process Macro were conducted with 411 samples. ILE and outcome expectancy had direct positive effects on volition, while FLE and social networking did not. Both learning experiences had indirect effects on AEV through social networking and outcome expectancy. The group who spent above 100 hours in formal learning had a moderating effect on the relationship between FLE and outcome variables compared to those who spent less than 50 hours. Considering the limited middle-aged adults' digital accessibility, developing user-friendly distance education guidelines, supporting social networking and ILE, and tailoring programs to individual expectations are required to encourage agricultural entrepreneurship. Combining career transition perspective and migration perspective, this article contributes to a theoretical framework explaining urban middle-aged adults' agricultural entrepreneurship. Despite known sex differences in the prevalence of sleep disturbance and cognitive impairment, research investigating sex differences in sleep/cognition associations is limited. We examined sex as a moderator of associations between self-reported sleep and objective cognition in middle-aged/older adults. Adults aged 50+ (32 men/31 women, Mage = 63.6 ± 7.7) completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and cognitive tasks: Stroop (processing speed, inhibition), Posner (spatial attentional orienting) and Sternberg (working memory). Multiple regressions examined whether PSQI metrics (global score, sleep quality ratings, sleep duration, sleep efficiency) were independently or interactively (with sex) associated with cognition, controlling for age and education. Sex interacted with sleep quality ratings in its association with endogenous spatial attentional orienting (∆R2 =.10, p =.01). Worse ratings of sleep quality were associated with worse orienting in women (B = 22.73, SE = 9.53, p =.02), not men (p =.24). Sex interacted with sleep efficiency in its associations with processing speed (∆R2 =.06, p =.04). Lower sleep efficiency was associated with slower Stroop control trial performance in women (B = −15.91, SE = 7.57, p =.04), not men (p =.48). Preliminary findings suggest middle-aged/older women are more vulnerable to associations between poor sleep quality and low sleep efficiency on spatial attentional orienting and processing speed, respectively. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of postural control strategies on the recognition error (RE) of center-of-pressure (COP) sway forward based on perceived exertion. Participants were 43 middle-aged or elderly people. We measured the maximum COP sway forward (100% center-of-pressure distance(COP-D)), 60% and 30% COP-D of 100% COP-D based on perceived exertion, and participants were classified into the good balance group and bad balance group by RE. The RE and trunk and leg angles were evaluated during COP sway forward. Results showed that RE being significantly higher for 30% COP-D and the group with a larger RE had a significantly larger trunk angle. Digital literacy has become increasingly important for individuals to participate in regular economic activities, including employment, consumption, and investment. This paper quantitatively defines digital literacy with recently released household survey data in China and describes the digital divide across regions and ages. We further show that digital literacy increases risky asset ownership in the financial market among the middle-aged and elderly population. In this sense, this paper identifies a novel factor that affects financial investment. These findings imply that the digital divide may lead to the asset divide and wealth inequality. Chronic diseases often accumulate with musculoskeletal (MSK) pain. However, less evidence is available on idiosyncratic patterns of chronic diseases and their relationships with the severity of MSK pain in general MSK pain populations. Questionnaire-based data on physician-diagnosed chronic diseases, MSK pain and its dimensions (frequency, intensity, bothersomeness, and the number of pain sites), and confounders were collected from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 at the age of 46. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was used to identify chronic disease clusters among individuals who reported any MSK pain within the previous year (n = 6105). The associations between chronic disease clusters, pain dimensions, and severe MSK pain, which was defined as prolonged (over 30 d within the preceding year), bothersome (Numerical Rating Scale >5), and multisite (two or more pain sites) pain, were analyzed using logistic regression and general linear regression models, adjusted for sex and educational level (n for the full sample = 4768). LCA resulted in three clusters: Metabolic (10.8% of the full sample), Psychiatric (2.9%), and Relatively Healthy (86.3%). Compared to the Relatively Healthy cluster, the Metabolic and Psychiatric clusters had higher odds for daily pain and higher mean pain intensity, bothersomeness, and the number of pain sites. Similarly, the odds for severe MSK pain were up to 75% (95% confidence interval: 44%–113%) and 155% (81%–259%) higher in the Metabolic and Psychiatric clusters, respectively, after adjustments for sex and educational level. Distinct patterns of chronic disease accumulation can be identified in the general MSK pain population. It seems that mental and metabolic health are at interplay with severe MSK pain. These findings suggest a potential need to screen for psychiatric and metabolic entities of health when treating working-aged people with MSK pain. Subjective social status (SSS) is an important independent predictor of health outcomes, however, the pathways through which it affects health are poorly understood. Chronic shame has previously been suggested as a potential mechanism but this has never been investigated and the relationship between chronic shame and health is under-researched. The purpose of this pilot study was to explore whether chronic shame explains a significant portion of the association between SSS and self rated health (SRH). Two-hundred American adults aged 30–55 years were recruited via a crowd-sourcing platform and were asked to provide information on their SSS, level of chronic shame, and SRH. Chronic shame significantly mediated the relationship between SSS and SRH. This pilot study provides initial evidence that shame explains a significant portion of the relationship between subjective social status and self-rated health. These findings support the initiation of larger, longitudinal investigations into chronic shame as a mediator of the subjective social status and self-rated health relationship. While media representations of female athletes in lean sports often lead to negative body image perceptions in female audiences, media images depicting athletes playing sports may generate positive responses with respect to body image. Derived from the two lines of scholarship in sports media effects, this between-subjects, online experiment tests the effects of viewing images of female athletes playing lean sports (gymnastics, diving, artistic swimming, figure skating, and cheerleading). Results showed that female viewers (N = 625) engaged in greater appearance social comparison after viewing the images of female athletes playing lean sports (versus the control images), which in turn, was positively associated with their body satisfaction. Different levels of thinness and muscularity of female athletes in the media images did not significantly affect female viewers' appearance social comparison or body satisfaction. Notably, post hoc analyses revealed several different findings across three age groups of women audiences (young adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults). Overall, this study sheds light on the positive impact of appearance social comparison after viewing lean sports. Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the impact of neuropsychological functions on self-care /self-management in middle-aged individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Areas covered: A comprehensive literature search was conducted from January 2012 to April 2023 across multiple databases. Ten articles were included in the scoping review, and 3 articles were included in the meta-analysis. The findings consistently indicated an association between reduced neuropsychological functions and poor self-care/self-management in this population. Memory functions, executive functions, and other domains were found to be significantly related to self-care/self-management, including diet management, exercise, blood glucose monitoring, and foot care. Expert opinion: This study highlights the importance of considering neuropsychological factors in understanding and improving diabetes management outcomes. The findings underscore the need for comprehensive neuropsychological assessments and the development of targeted interventions to address specific vulnerable domains. Future research should focus on elucidating underlying mechanisms, addressing methodological inconsistencies, and exploring the effectiveness of interventions targeting neuropsychological impairments. This study examined stressful life events, discrimination, and well-being among older African Americans. Through a risk and resilience framework we evaluate the role of subjective religiosity as a moderator. Stressful life events and discrimination represent a double jeopardy risk profile in which discrimination exacerbates the negative relationship between stressful life events and well-being. Subjective religiosity is a resilience resource that should buffer the effect of discrimination on the stress – well-being link. Stressful life events and discrimination predicted poorer well-being, discrimination exacerbated the negative effects of stressful life events on depression and life-satisfaction, but subjective religiosity reduced these effects. Cognitive impairment is known to increase with aging in people living with HIV (PLWH). Impairment in cognitive domains required for safe driving may put PLWH at risk for poor driving outcomes, decreased mobility, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study described the driving behaviors of middle-aged and older PLWH and examined correlations between driving behaviors and cognitive functioning (Aim 1), and driving behaviors and HRQoL domains (Aim 2). A sample of 260 PLWH ages 40 and older completed a comprehensive assessment including a battery of cognitive tests, an HRQoL measure, and a measure of self-reported driving habits. Associations between driving habits, cognitive function, and HRQoL domains were examined. While 212 (81.54%) participants reported currently driving, only 166 (63.85%) possessed a driver's license. Several significant correlations emerged between driving habits and both cognitive and HRQoL variables, with a general pattern suggesting that current greater driving exposure was associated with better cognitive functioning and HRQoL. Given consistent associations that emerged between the social functioning HRQoL domain and several driving habits, multivariable regression was conducted to examine the unique association between an index of greater driving exposure (i.e., days driven per week) and social functioning, adjusting for potential confounders (race, income, education, depression, and global cognition). Results showed that more days driven per week was a significant, independent correlate of higher social functioning. Sleep continuity (i.e., ability to initiate and/or maintain sleep) worsens with age. It is unclear whether problem endorsement and/or daytime dysfunction show similar age-related trends. Accordingly, a large archival dataset was used to examine age differences in sleep continuity, problem endorsement, and sleep related daytime dysfunction. Participants were categorized as: Young Adults (18–29 years); Adults (30–44 years); Middle Aged Adults (45–64 years); and Older Adults (65–89 years). Young Adults, Adults, and Middle Aged Adults were 1:1 matched with Older Adults (n = 233) on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, and BMI. MANOVA, ANOVAs, and chi-square analysis were performed to assess for age-related differences. In a sample of 932 adults with self-reported sleep continuity disturbance (i.e., insomnia), sleep continuity was significantly worse in older age groups. This effect was limited to middle and late insomnia with middle aged and older adults waking up with greater frequency and for longer durations of time during the night and in the early morning than younger cohorts. Problem endorsement largely increased across age groups (except for sleep latency) but reports of overall sleep-related daytime dysfunction showed no difference by age. When evaluating sleep continuity disturbance, assessing whether the patient identifies their sleep continuity disturbance as a problem and whether it affects their daytime function can be informative, particularly in older adults. It may serve to reveal (case-by-case) when there are discordances between incidence/severity of illness and problem endorsement/daytime dysfunction. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined Motivational Interviewing (MI) effects on positive airway pressure (PAP) adherence and related outcomes. Medline, CIHANL, Psych Info, Web of Science, PubMed, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched for randomized controlled trials published from peer-reviewed journals in English from 1990 to 2021 that compared objective PAP adherence among adults with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in a MI and non-MI intervention. A random effects meta-analysis model was completed at the 1-to-2-week, and 1-, 2-, 3-, and 12-month follow-up, and risk of bias was analyzed with the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. In 10 trials of naïve PAP users and one trial of non-naïve PAP users, 14 to 277 middle-aged adults with moderate-to-severe OSA generally engaged in a brief, individual, face-to-face, MI intervention with standard care or a control condition. Several trials of naïve PAP users demonstrated that MI increased PAP use 1–2.6 hours per night, but a similar number of trials showed comparable conditions. Secondary outcomes were mixed. Among non-naïve PAP users, MI did not significantly increase adherence or secondary outcomes. The meta-analysis of PAP-naïve participants revealed that MI had a small to moderate significant effect on PAP adherence at 1, 2, and 3 months after beginning PAP (Hedges' g = 0.38 to 0.48; 95% CI = 0.04, 0.75) compared to standard care alone. Despite heterogeneity, MI moderately increased PAP adherence among PAP-naïve adults with moderate-to-severe OSA, suggesting an effective strategy for short-term (1–3 months) adherence. Subjective socioeconomic status (SES) has been shown to influence both psychological and biological outcomes. However, less is known about whether its influence extends to cognitive outcomes. We examined the relation between subjective SES and executive functions (EF)—a set of cognitive control processes—and its underlying mechanisms. By analyzing a nationally representative cohort of middle-aged and older adults (age 40–80) from the MIDUS 2 National Survey and Cognitive Project, we tested a serial mediation model with sense of control and health as sequential mediators. Using structural equation modeling, we found that subjective SES is indirectly related to EF via sense of control and health, above and beyond objective SES and other key covariates. Efficient learning is critical to adapting to different environments. There are well-known learning principles in cognitive rehabilitation, including errorless (EL) and trial-and-error (T&E) learning; however, little is known about their underlying neural mechanisms. In the current study, to understand the age-related changes in learning benefits and neural mechanisms applying EL and T&E learning methods in healthy middle-aged adults, we conducted a graph theoretical analysis using functional magnetic resonance imaging data and analyzed the relationship between learning benefits and age, as well as functional network connectivity and age, with both learning principles. A total of 43 participants performed a color-name association task through EL and T&E learning methods. We focused on the functional connectivity patterns of the default mode network (DMN) since previous studies demonstrated this network to be more distinctive and important for the T&E learning method than EL. Within-network functional connectivity was used as the graph metric. Age showed significant moderate negative correlations with T&E scores and within-DMN functional connectivity in the test state following T&E learning. Conversely, age was not significantly correlated with EL scores or within-DMN functional connectivity in either the EL learning or test states. Our findings demonstrate the age-related learning decline associated with decreased DMN integration with aging, when applying the T&E method but not the EL method, even in healthy middle-aged adults. Relationships between the underlying neural network and age are different depending on the learning method. This suggests the need to take into consideration the remaining learning ability through the T&E learning method compared to normal aging and to utilize residual DMN functioning, in addition to the comparison between score differences between EL and T&E methods, when tailoring an individual learning approach. Nearly half of adults with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) experience HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND), characterized by cognitive impairments in two or more cognitive domains, which can interfere with everyday functioning. Many factors are thought to influence such cognitive impairments in adults with HIV; one factor seldom examined is personality. This study investigated the association between five major dimensions of personality (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism) and cognitive function in older adults with HIV. In this cross-sectional study, a secondary data analysis was conducted on 261 HIV + participants. Participants completed a norm-based cognitive battery covering seven cognitive domains, which yielded the following indices: global cognitive impairment, and global and domain-specific T-scores. The Big Five Inventory was used to assess personality traits. Higher openness, conscientiousness, and agreeableness were associated with better performance on individual cognitive domains while agreeableness and openness were also positively associated with global cognitive T-scores (p <.01). Only openness significantly predicted global cognition when adjusting for covariates (p <.01). Openness was associated with better global cognitive function in persons with HIV. This study provides a basis for further investigation of potential mechanisms for the association between personality and cognition in people with HIV in order to ultimately inform intervention strategies. Interlimb coordination is required for adequate execution of most daily life activities. Yet, aging negatively affects interlimb coordination, impacting the quality of life in older people. Therefore, disentangling the underlying age-related neural mechanisms is of utmost importance. Here, we investigated neurophysiological processes of an interlimb reaction time task, including both simple and complex coordination modes. Midfrontal theta power, measured using electroencephalography (EEG), was analyzed as a marker for cognitive control. In total, 82 healthy adults participated, with 27 younger, 26 middle-aged, and 29 older adults. On a behavioral level, reaction time increased across the adult lifespan, and error rate was higher in older adults. Notably, aging disproportionately affected reaction times in the complex coordination modes, with larger reaction time increases from simple to complex movements than in younger adults, starting already at middle age. On the neurophysiological level, EEG showed that only younger adults had significantly increased levels of midfrontal theta power during complex relative to simple coordination modes, while no significant differences were found between simple and complex movements in middle-aged and older adults. The absence of this theta power upregulation with regard to movement complexity with increasing age might reflect a premature saturation of the available mental resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To identify the nutrients that influence the performance of working memory, which is greatly affected as age progresses. A total of 1646 healthy adults between 21 and 80 years old participated in the study. The daily consumption of 64 nutrients was examined using a food frequency questionnaire that assessed food intake during the previous year. Working memory was measured in the verbal and spatial domains using a computerized task. We examined which nutrients influence working memory across the entire adult lifespan and whether the influence of any of these nutrients on working memory is moderated by individuals' ages. Working memory, across the entire adult lifespan, benefits from the intake of cholesterol, alcohol, gamma- and delta-tocopherol, vitamin B6, and palmitoleic, oleic, alpha linoleic and linoleic acids. Moderator analyses revealed that fats, energy, lactose and sodium negatively influenced working memory in middle-aged and older adults, whereas vitamin D and vitamin C had positive effects on memory beyond 70 years of age. To investigate the prevalence of self-reported bruxism and its association with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The hypothesis of the study was that self-reported bruxism is associated with TMD. The data were gathered from 1962 subjects who participated in a field study in 2012–2013, including a questionnaire concerning bruxism and TMD symptoms as well as clinical sub-diagnoses of TMD using the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). Statistical method was chi-square test. Bonferroni correction was made, and a p-value of <0.003 was considered as significant. The prevalence of self-reported bruxism was 39.6%: 34.0% in men and 44.5% in women. Those who reported sleep bruxism (SB) or awake bruxism (AB) had significantly more pain-related TMD symptoms and signs compared to those not reporting bruxism. The prevalence of self-reported bruxism is high among middle-aged adults and is associated with TMD pain-related symptoms and signs, as well as TMD diagnoses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Suicide rates among Hispanics in the United States have steadily risen over the last 2 decades, especially among youth and adults in midlife. Social disconnection (low belonging) is associated with suicidal ideation; however, little is known about the demographic and social factors that impact a sense of belonging among Hispanic adults in midlife. The current study sought to examine (a) the association between demographic and social factors (acculturative stress, community integration and engagement, religiosity, ethnic cohesion) and neighborhood belonging as well as (b) whether neighborhood belonging is associated with passive suicide ideation (thoughts of death) among a community sample of Hispanic adults. This study uses a sample of 968 Hispanic adults in midlife, from Puerto Rican, Mexican, and Dominican backgrounds, from the Midlife in the United Sates (MIDUS): Survey of Minority Groups. Overall, community integration, religiosity, and community engagement were unique positive predictors of neighborhood belonging; lifetime number of discrete events of discrimination was the only unique negative predictor. Among foreign-born respondents, community integration, community engagement, and discrimination were associated with neighborhood belonging, whereas, among U.S.-born respondents, only religiosity and community were associated with belonging. Neighborhood belonging was the only variable negatively associated with thoughts of death among depressed participants. Fostering a sense of neighborhood belonging among Hispanic adults—particularly via promoting community engagement—may help decrease suicide risk. Using Communication Accommodation Theory as a theoretical framework, the present study investigated the role of group salience (i.e. race/ethnicity salience and age salience) when young and middle-aged Japanese Americans communicate with older Japanese Americans. A total of 186 young and middle-aged Japanese Americans' data were collected. The results found that self-perceived avoidance communicative behaviour mediated the relationship between old age salience and communication satisfaction inversely when young and middle-aged Japanese Americans communicated with older Japanese Americans. On the other hand, self-perceived respectful communicative behaviour mediated the relationship between old age salience and communication satisfaction only when young and middle-aged Japanese Americans perceived high race/ethnicity salience.
