Electrical parameters are vital for electrical discharge machining (EDM) process performance. The study utilized the combination of Taguchi and grey relational analysis (GRA) to optimize sinking EDM. Optimization of peak current, pulse duration, duty ratio and electrode lifting time affecting material removal rate (MRR), relative electrode wear rate (REWR) and surface roughness (SR) in sinking EDM. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) shows that peak current and pulse duration significantly affect MRR and REWR, respectively. Peak current and pulse duration significantly affect SR. The optimized parameters were subjected to EDM experiments and the results are 8.54% increase in MRR, 11.11% decrease in REWR and 9.42% decrease in SR. It was found that at a peak current of 1A, the discharge pit not only depends on peak current and pulse duration but also on pulse off time. Compared to conventional optimization methods, this study analyzed the microstructure and recast layer of the workpieces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
