We report the studies of structure and properties of a quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) compound ${\rm BaTiS}_{3}$ BaTiS 3 under pressure. The poly-crystalline samples are synthesized by solid-state reaction method and single-crystalline samples are produced by chemical vapor transport method. The XRD measurement under ambient pressure confirms the hexagonal structure, which consists of face-sharing octahedral ${\rm TiS}_{6}$ TiS 6 chains along c-axis and displays a quasi-1D feature. When applying pressure, the synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments show that the sample undergoes a phase transition from hexagonal phase to orthorhombic phase at around 10 GPa due to the zig–zag deformation of ${\rm TiS}_{6}$ TiS 6 chains, while the quasi-1D structure is reserved. At ambient pressure, ${\rm BaTiS}_{3}$ BaTiS 3 exhibits an insulating behavior with a band gap about 0.273 eV. 1. The Wulong goose is a Chinese breed and a source of high-quality meat and eggs. A characteristic of the Wulong goose is that a proportion of the birds do not have eyelids, known as the Huoyon trait. 2. Wulong geese exhibiting the Huoyan trait at embryonic stages of 9 days (E9), 12 days (E12) and 14 days (E14) were selected alongside those with normal eyelids for comprehensive transcriptome sequencing. Differentially expressed gene (DEG) and functional enrichment analyses were performed and finally, eight DEG were chosen to verify the accuracy of qPCR sequencing. 3. Overall, 466, 962 and 550 DEG were obtained from the three control groups, D9 vs. N9, D12 vs. N12 and D14 vs. N14, respectively, by differential analysis (p < 0.05). CDKN1C, CRH, CROCC and TYSND1 were significantly expressed in the three groups. Enrichment analysis revealed the enrichment of CROCC and TYSND1 in pathways of cell cycle process, endocytosis, microtubule-based process, microtubule organising centre organisation, protein processing and protein maturation. CDKN1C and CRH were enriched in the cell cycle and cAMP signalling pathway. 4. Some collagen family genes were detected among the DEGs, including COL3A1, COL4A5, COL4A2 and COL4A1. FREM1 and FREM2 genes were detected in both Huoyan and normal eyelids. The dependence of thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) properties of LiMgPO4:Tb,Sm,B samples prepared by the high-temperature solid-state method on maximum heating temperatures was investigated for the first time. The TL glow curves showed the ratio of peak 3 to peak 2 increased with the increase of maximum heating temperature. The influence of OSL on maximum heating temperatures showed that the sensitivity of OSL reached the maximum at the maximum heating temperature of 1000°C, which is 11.6 times higher than that of 800 °C. The relative standard deviation of the repeatability is less than 1.5% regardless of the maximum heating temperature. The minimum measurable dose (MMD) could be significantly improved by optimizing OSL parameters, such as maximum heating temperature and readout time. The MMD as low as 0.31 µGy has been achieved. The residual OSL is up to 92.3% after irradiation for 24 h. LiMgPO4:Tb,Sm,B is highly sensitive to the maximum heating temperature. Considering fast decay time, high OSL sensitivity, good repeatability, low MMD and little fading, it is recommended that the maximum heating temperature of LiMgPO4:Tb,Sm,B is 1000°C. A micro-tearing mode has been observed in electron temperature fluctuations and magnetic fluctuations with the frequency range of 80–120 kHz in the pedestal of the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) using Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) and Mirnov magnetic coil measurement. It appears in the type-I ELMs period after the L-H transition. The measured poloidal phase velocity of the electron temperature fluctuations is ∼40 km/s (f = 80–120 kHz) in the electron diamagnetic direction in the laboratory frame with the poloidal wave number around kΘ∼0.15 /cm. The two-dimensional structure of MTMs is directly observed using two-dimensional Electron cyclotron emission imaging. The experiment confirmed that the electron temperature (ECEI) and radial electric field (Backward Doppler reflectometer) during MTM meet the pressure balance equation. Until now, the theory and simulation results showed that transport is in heat flux, small particle flux, while the experimental results of this paper indicate that the particle flux is small. This article discusses a case report of a 39-year-old Asian male with chronic gout and chronic renal failure. The patient developed nodular papules on his joints, abdomen, and lower back, some of which ulcerated and discharged a chalky substance. Despite treatment with allopurinol and benzbromarone, the patient's hyperuricemia was not well managed. The patient's chronic kidney disease progressed, and allopurinol was replaced with febuxostat, which led to gout flares. Glucocorticoids were administered to reduce inflammation, and the patient was advised to abstain from alcohol. The article also discusses the challenges of diagnosing and managing cutaneous manifestations of gout, the role of alcohol intake and obesity in gout management, and the limitations of treatment options for gout in the context of kidney disease. Argillaceous rocks are candidate host and/or cap formations for the geological disposal of nuclear wastes in many countries, including Canada, France and Switzerland. The understanding of the long term mechanical behaviour of such rocks is an essential requirement for the assessment of their performance as a barrier against radionuclide migration. Due to the existence of bedding, argillaceous rocks are inherently anisotropic and the development of stress-strain models for their mechanical behaviour needs to take this anisotropy into account. This paper presents two examples of the practical implementation of stress-strain relationships in finite element models to simulate the excavation damage zones (EDZ) in bedded argillaceous rocks. The first example concerns the EDZ around a micro-tunnel in Opalinus Clay, in Switzerland. The second example relates to the EDZ around the century-old tunnel in Tournemire shale, in France. Both examples show the importance of developing robust stress-strain models that can replicate inherent anisotropy of the rock, and of calibrating and validating the models with a comprehensive set of laboratory experiments. 1. Myxovirus resistance (Mx) is a protein produced by the interferon-induced natural immune response with broad spectrum antiviral function. However, the role and expression characteristics of the Mx gene in immune defence against viral infection in goose have not yet been reported. 2. This study found a 2576 bp genomic sequence and a 2112 bp mRNA sequence for Mx, encoding 703 amino acids. Multiple sequence alignments of the amino acid sequences showed that the Yangzhou goose Mx (goMx) had 86.99% similarity to the mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos). 3. Tissue-specific expression profiling revealed that the expression of goMx was highest in the lung and spleen. Both poly (I:C) and GPV were found to elevate the expression of goMx. The upregulated expression of goMx was associated with interferon pathway-related genes IRF7, JAK1, STAT1, and STAT2. Furthermore, overexpression of goMx significantly activated the transcription of poly (I:C) induced TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-18. 4. In sedimentary basins, the determination of the absolute timing of deposition and diagenetic events is a challenging yet critical parameter necessary in the reconstruction of paleo-fluid evolution and burial histories. Here we demonstrate the practical application of in situ calcite U–Pb geochronology on core samples from the Olympic 1 well in the Canning Basin of Western Australia. Using quantitative mineralogy and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analytical techniques, we obtained an authigenic calcite U–Pb age of 469.7 ± 4.3 Ma for limestone in the Samphire Marsh Member of the Lower Ordovician Nambeet Formation. This precise depositional age can be independently verified using zircon thermal ionisation mass spectrometry U–Pb ages of 479.4 to 470.2 Ma determined on adjacent volcanic ash beds. Further geochronology studies on calcite cements from the Lower Ordovician Fly Flat Member sandstone from the Nambeet Formation returned a U–Pb age of 365.3 ± 5.8 Ma. This is the first study to place absolute age constraints on the diagenetic event that occluded the intergranular space in a sandstone reservoir. The calcite cementation age suggests that impairment of reservoir quality in the Fly Flat Member sandstone occurred in the Late Devonian, much earlier than major petroleum charge events in the Canning Basin. The calcite U–Pb geochronometer, when combined with complementary quantitative mineralogical analysis, can build direct temporal constraints on the depositional and diagenetic processes in both carbonate and clastic sedimentary rocks in basins worldwide. The integration of automated scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X‐ray spectrometry quantitative mineralogical analysis with LA-ICP-MS analysis enables more reliable and efficient in situ calcite U–Pb dating. An accurate age of 469.7 ± 4.3 Ma is obtained for carbonate sedimentation in the Samphire Marsh Member of the Lower Ordovician Nambeet Formation in the Canning Basin. The calcite cementation age of 365.3 ± 5.8 Ma provides an absolute time constraint on pore-occluding lithification of the Fly Flat Member sandstone reservoir in the Canning Basin. JUNA measured the SP 19 sp F(p, ) SP 16 sp O channel down to the lowest energy of E SB c.m. sb 72 keV, and the JUNA rate deviates significantly from the previous expectations by a factor of 0.2-1.3 [[21]]. Thanks to the advantages provided by CJPL, the Jinping Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (JUNA) experiment collaboration has proposed to exploit the extremely low background and try to reach the Gamow region in CJPL-II A1 Hall (see Figure 1) [[9]]. Previously, this reaction was thought to be weak compared to the SP 19 sp F(p, ) SP 16 sp O reaction, so most of the SP 19 sp F produced by the CNO cycle would be recycled back into SP 16 sp O, with no substantial chemical abundance changes. The background mainly consists of the neutron-induced background from SP 13 sp C( ,n) SP 16 sp O reaction and the gamma background from other ( , ) reactions, making the analysis complicated. Pesticide residues on plant surfaces are a primary source of pesticide bioaccumulation in crops. In this context, we propose a mechanism-based model for understanding the pesticide fate on the plant surface following aerial application, taking into account fate modelling of the pesticide spray solution on the plant surface. Using chlorothalonil as an example, the simulation results revealed that the spray solution dissipated rapidly after aerial application, resulting in the formation of a saturated pesticide solution, which facilitated the diffusion process of the pesticide residue from the plant surface into the peel tissue. The proposed model generated higher simulated residue concentrations in the peel or pulp than the current model, owing to the proposed model's assumption of rapid dissipation of the spray solution. This indicated that the proposed model specified the influence of the spray solution on the plant's exposure to residues via the surface deposition pathway, whereas the current modelling approach presented a generic estimate of the residue dissipation on the plant surface that linked to the residue's fate in the soil. 1. The DNA/RNA binding protein YBX3 is associated with gene transcription, DNA repair, and the progression of various diseases and is highly conserved from bacteria to humans. 2. The following experiment found a 27-bp insertion/deletion polymorphism in the intron region of the YBX3 gene through resequencing. In cross-designed, F2 resource groups, the indel was significantly associated with broiler weight and body size at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks of age and several other traits (semi evisceration weight (SEW), evisceration weight (EW), semi evisceration rate (SER), evisceration rate (ER), head weight (HW), claw weight (CLW), wing weight (DWW), gizzard weight (GW), pancreas weight (PW), chest muscle weight (CMW), leg weight (LW), leg muscle weight (LMW), shedding weight (SW), carcase weight (CW) and pectoral area (PA)) (P < 0.05). 3. The insertion-insertion (II) genotype was significantly associated with the greatest growth traits and carcase traits, whereas the values associated with the insertion-deletion (ID) genotype were the lowest in the F2 reciprocal cross chickens. 4. The mutation sites were genotyped in 3611 individuals from 13 different chicken breeds and cross-designed F2 resource groups. The II genotype is the most important in commercial broilers, and the I allele frequency observed in these breeds was relatively high. However, there is still considerable potential in breeding dual-purpose chickens and commercial laying hens. 5. The mRNA expression of the YBX3 gene in tissues from different breeds and developmental stages demonstrated that the 27-bp indel may affect the entire development process of poultry by affecting muscle development. 1. The objectives of the present study were to elucidate the relationship between novel variations of the SIRT1 gene and chicken growth traits. In total, 1,429 chickens, including six breeds and a Gushi ×Anka F2 resource population, were genotyped using PCR-RFLP. 2. Two novel InDels (c.-1552_-1553insCG and c.-450_-451delCG) in the promoter of the chicken SIRT1 gene were identified. An association study showed that c.-1552_-1553insCG was significantly correlated with growth traits and serum lipid indicators. 3. The insertion genotype was most highly associated with body weight at day old, two- and four-week-old chickens, and with shank circumference at four and eight weeks of age. The wild type genotype at this site was most highly associated with serum lipid indicators. 4. In contrast, c.-450_-451delCG was significantly correlated with muscle fibre diameter. The SIRT1 gene expression in chickens with different InDel genotypes was analysed and was significantly higher with heterozygous genotypes at both sites in muscle and fat tissue, relative to expression in chickens with the corresponding homozygous genotypes. 5. The effects of different haplotypes on SIRT1 promoter activity showed that promoter activity depends on haplotype, with haplotype HapII exhibiting the highest activity. 6. Stable L12 structured Cr3Cu precipitates were determined in a Cu-4.06Cr-1.25Nb alloy rather than b.c.c. structured Cr precipitates by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and three-dimension atom probe tomography (3DAP) at 450 oC. The precipitation sequence of the studied alloy aged at 400 oC was supersaturated solid solution → f.c.c. Cr phase → Cr3Cu phase (L12). Nb atoms would segregate in the interface between the Cu and Cr phase, reduce the Cu/Cr interfacial energy, affect the precipitation, growth, phase transformation, and coarsening of the precipitate. These Cr3Cu precipitates significantly improved the high-temperature strength of the Cu-Cr-Nb alloy (223 ± 5 MPa at 500 oC). TEM images and calculations revealed that Nb can stabilize metastable Cr3Cu precipitates (L12) by reducing the Cu/Cr interfacial energy, and provide a higher high-temperature strengthening effect than b.c.c. The geological research and exploration evaluation of marine–continental transitional shale gas are lagging behind the rapid development of marine and continental shale-gas resources in China. To investigate the shale-gas potential of the lower Permian Shanxi and Taiyuan formations in the southern North China Basin, a series of measurements on representative core samples were conducted to characterise shale features, including sedimentary environment, organic geochemistry, mineral composition, pore structure and gas-bearing capacity. The average total organic carbon (TOC) content of the Shanxi and Taiyuan shales reaches 1.68 and 2.26 wt%, respectively, and deposition took place in environments of rapidly changing depositional conditions, where predominantly gas-generating type III kerogen was preserved in the sediments. Regarding the sedimentary environments, different microfacies can affect effective thickness, abundance of organic matter, mineral composition and gas content in the Shanxi and Taiyuan formations. In addition, TOC content, inertinite, chlorite, thermal maturity and pyrite have significant impacts on gas contents. Although the Shanxi-Taiyuan shales are not comparable with gas-producing shales in the USA, there are some similarities in shale reservoir parameters such as the relatively higher organic richness (>2.0 wt% TOC) and gas content (∼2.0 m3/t) than in the well-developed Longmaxi and Yanchang shales. Consequently, the Shanxi-Taiyuan shales could be classified as potential shale-gas targets owing to their relatively favourable reservoir properties and gas accumulation. However, some complex geological conditions, such as the greater burial depth (>3500 m), higher clay content (>45%), deficiency of organic-matter hosted pores but other well-developed types of pore-microfracture, extremely high thermal maturity (>3.0% Ro), several large unsealed faults, etc. may impact gas production in the study areas. Therefore, local geological conditions should be fully considered for the exploration and development of transitional shale gas in the southern North China Basin. To evaluate ultrasonic features of the major salivary glands in patients with immunoglobulin G4-related sialadenitis (IgG4-RS) and to explore the differences between IgG4-RS and Sjögren's syndrome (SS). We conducted the study in 150 patients with IgG4-RS and 100 patients with SS. Ultrasonographic variables of the static images of major salivary glands were analysed. An experienced radiologist scored the confidence rating regarding the presence of the characteristic imaging findings using a five-grade rating system. Ultrasonography scores between IgG4-RS and SS were compared. The major salivary glands were significantly larger in patients with IgG4-RS than in the SS group. The main features of ultrasonography of the salivary glands in IgG4-RS were various hypoechoic lesions and increased colour Doppler signalling. In contrast, the major salivary glands in SS exhibited hyperechoic lines and/or spots and obscuration of the gland configuration. The scores of the summarized sonographic characteristics also showed statistically significant differences between the IgG4-RS and SS groups. This study revealed different ultrasonic features of the major salivary glands in patients with IgG4-RS and SS. The scored sonographic features were helpful in differentiating IgG4-RS from SS. Consequently, we suggest that ultrasonography of major salivary glands could be a useful imaging procedure in the evaluation of patients suspected of having IgG4-RS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Individual variation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis response to stress could contribute to variable stress resiliency of livestock. During stress events, the innate immune system can also become activated and work in concert with the neuroendocrine system to restore homeostasis, while minimizing tissue damage. The purpose of this study was to assess immune function in variable stress-responding sheep in response to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) endotoxin immune-challenge. High (HSR, n = 12), middle (MSR, n = 12), and low-stress responders (LSR, n = 12) were selected from a population of 112 female lambs and classified based on serum cortisol concentration after receiving an intravenous bolus of LPS (400 ng/kg). Blood was collected from the jugular vein at 0 and 4 hrs post-LPS challenge to monitor changes in serum pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and white blood cell populations. Rectal temperature was recorded hourly to monitor fever. HSR had the greatest increase in rectal temperature and strongest pro-inflammatory IL-6 and IFN-γ cytokine responses compared to MSR and LSR. HSR and MSR had stronger anti-inflammatory IL-10 cytokine and CCL2 chemokine responses than LSR. White blood cell counts changed between 0 and 4 h; however, no differences were detected among the variable stress response groups. The distinct inflammatory response in variable stress responding sheep could contribute to individual differences in stress resiliency and this warrants investigation in the context of other types of stress. Acute inflammation was studied in sheep stress-phenotyped using bacterial lipopolysaccharide. Sheep selected based on stress responsiveness (i.e. serum cortisol concentration) have different immune responses to bacterial stress. The long noncoding RNA lncGLM is significantly differentially expressed in the livers of peak-laying hens compared with that in the livers of pre-laying hens, but its potential biological role and expression regulation are unclear. 2. To explore the potential biological function of lncGLM, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) detection and association analysis were carried out in the Gushi×Anka F2 resource population. 3. The tissues and spatiotemporal expression characteristics of lncGLM were analysed by real-time quantitative PCR. The effects of 17β-oestradiol on the expression of lncGLM expression were analysed through in vitro and in vivo experiments. 4. The results showed that a g.19069338 T > C SNP was present in lncGLM. Association analysis revealed that lncGLM was significantly associated with body slanting length at 12 weeks, body weight at 12 weeks, shank length at four weeks, chest depth at eight weeks, pelvic width at 12 weeks, eviscerated weight, head weight, pancreas weight, pectoralis weight, leg muscle weight, muscular stomach weight rate, pancreas weight rate, carcase weight, aspartate aminotransferase, creatinine and pectoral muscle water loss rate. 5. The expression of lncGLM in the liver was higher than that in other sampled tissues. In addition, the expression of lncGLM in the liver was significantly higher in the peak-laying period than at the pre-laying period. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that lncGLM expression was regulated by 17β-oestradiol via oestrogen receptor alpha (ER-α). In the coal-bearing deposits of the Qiongdongnan Basin in the South China Sea, coal seams are for the most part extremely thin, typically less than 0.5 m. Coal streaks are commonly observed but are not concentrated. In addition, the ash content of the coal components is very high, indicating that the geological conditions of peat accumulation and coal formation were very unstable. For these reasons, it can be speculated that at the time of development, peat mires were relatively poor, in terms of inheritance and continuity, and were commonly not preserved. Coal measures, coal seams (in situ peat accumulation over long distances) and dispersed terrigenous sedimentary organic matter, which together constitute a type of complex coal source-to-sink system found in basin-marginal basins, include three aspects. (1) The material is homologous: whether autochthonous accumulation, allochthonous accumulation or dispersed organic matter is present, the total organic matter source is homologous, i.e. suitable for development and plant growth. (2) The process of organic matter transport (channel) is divided into three forms: vertical accumulation in situ, transport to relatively fixed areas by flowing water, and transport by other mechanisms with long-distance dispersion and drift. (3) There are three types of aggregation forms: vertical accumulation in situ, transport from flowing water to relatively fixed areas away from where plants grow and aggregate, and deposition in deep-water basins fixed with other substances; the latter type requires a period of time for long-distance dispersion and drift, including channel flow and surface flow. From plant growth to peat formation, the 'source–channel–sink system' of coal formation is 'sensitivity to sedimentary environments and complexity of distribution'. Convergence of coal-series, coal seam (insitu peat aggregation and allochthonous aggregation), and terrestrial dispersed organic matter deposition, constitute a complex coal-measure source–sink system. Source includes substance homology, channels include insitu vertical accumulation and dispersion drift in short and long distances, with convergence forms including insitu vertical accretion, remote sink and dispersion in deep-water basin. 1. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of different starch sources (corn, wheat, and rice) on the blood glucose level, glycogen content of liver and muscle, expression of GSK-3β and FAS mRNA, abdominal fat weight and abdominal fat deposition in broiler chickens. 2. A total of 360, one-day-old AA (Arbor Acres) broiler chickens were randomly assigned to three treatment groups, each with six replicates, consisting of 20 chickens per replicate, and fed either a corn-, wheat- or rice-based diet for 21 days. The chickens were then subdivided into groups A and B, and the chickens in these two subgroups were processed or sampled for 28 days, respectively. 3. The results indicated that post-prandial time significantly affected the glucose concentration, glycogen content in the liver and breast muscle and expression of GSK-3β and FAS mRNAs (P < 0.05). The expression of the GSK-3β gene in the chicken liver of the corn-based diet group was higher (P < 0.05) than that in the wheat-based diet group, and the expression of the FAS gene in the corn-based diet group was lower (P < 0.05) than that in the wheat-based and rice-based diet groups. Abdominal fat weight and deposition in the corn-based diet group were lower than those of the wheat-based and rice-based diet groups, but these differences were not significant (P > 0.05). 4. The results suggested that the efficiency of glucose absorption in animals might have an effect on the fat deposition efficiency in the liver and that diets with different starch sources might affect fat deposition in chickens. Pressure sensor used in marine hydrographic survey is an important device for the deep sea detection, the tsunami forecast and the marine engineering. Owing to its mature technology process and low production cost, silicon piezoresistive sensor is widely applied in the field of industrial pressure measurement. However, its temperature effect can result in non-negligible dynamic error, which cannot meet requirement of deep sea environment. The silicon-on-sapphire pressure sensor based on stress cup structure is presented. The output voltage values show a high deviation in the range of −6∼50°C due to temperature drift. In order to minimise this temperature effect, a temperature compensation algorithm is proposed to realise 0.03% accuracy in the full scale 60 MPa range. Compared with a reference commercial sensor in deep sea experiment, the test pressure sensors exhibit minor error, excellent similarity and coherence. This numerical method provides a new research direction for environmental self-adaptive sensor. Lightweight magnesium alloys with good thermal conductance are in demand for structural components in portable devices. This work presents a strategy to achieve excellent thermal conductivity, room temperature (RT) formability and high strength in magnesium sheet alloys. We found that a Mg-1.6Zn-0.5Ca-0.4Zr alloy shows a substantial increase in thermal conductivity to over 130 W/(m·K) due to the reduced supersaturation of solute atoms in the matrix by the precipitation of Guinier-Preston (G.P.) zones while exhibiting excellent RT formability with a large Index Erichsen value of 8.1 mm, and a high yield strength of 227 MPa by peak aging treatment. Kansei Engineering (KE) is a user-oriented technology combing customer psychological feelings and engineering for designing and developing products. Conventionally, questionnaire surveys have been extensively applied for understanding customers' affective demands, responses and evaluations. However, the questionnaire is usually time-consuming, labour-intensive and small in data size. Online customer reviews provide trustable, continuously updated and free customers' responses. Existing studies generally focus on the polarity classification of the positivity and negativity of the review texts. This study proposes an opinion mining approach based on KE and machine learning to extract and measure users' affective responses to products from online customer reviews. Five types of machine learning algorithms are applied, including Support Vector Machine (SVM), Support Vector Regression (SVR), Classification and Regression Tree (CART), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Ridge Regression (RR). An experiment has been conducted to illustrate the proposed approach. The results show that SVM+SVR is the best performer. It achieved a recall, precision and F 1 score of more than 80% for the classification of the soft-hard attribute with the smallest mean square error. Based on the proposed method, designers and manufacturers can effectively know customers' responses to products through inputting the review texts to facilitate the process of product design. 1. The potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily J member 11 gene (KCNJ11) is involved in the insulin secretion pathway. Studies have shown that mutation in this gene is associated with muscle weakness. The objective of the present study was to establish the association between KCNJ11 gene polymorphism and chicken growth performance and to analyse its expression pattern. 2. A novel 163-bp insertion/deletion (indel) polymorphism was identified in the region downstream of the KCNJ11 gene in 2330 individuals from ten populations by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). An F2 resource population was used to investigate the genetic effects of the chicken KCNJ11 gene. Association analysis showed that the indel was significantly associated with chicken growth traits and that the phenotypic value of the ins-ins (II) genotype is higher than that of the ins-del (ID) and del-del (DD) genotypes. 3. Gene expression for different genotypes showed that birds carrying the II allele had a higher expression level than the DD genotypes. Analysis of tissue and spatiotemporal expression patterns indicated that the KCNJ11 gene was highly expressed in muscle tissues, with the highest levels in muscle tissue at one week of age, and that a 10% crude protein diet reduced the expression of this gene, average daily gain and muscle fibre diameter. 4. Patients with atrial fibrillation are at an increased risk for stroke, and many benefits from anticoagulation. Despite the emergence of direct oral anticoagulants, many patients continue to rely on warfarin for their anticoagulation due to logistical, pharmacokinetic, clinical, or patient preference issues. Previous work has suggested that outcomes of warfarin therapy are related to patient education/knowledge. We assessed knowledge of indications, benefits, and complications of warfarin therapy in 99 randomly selected patients enrolled in the Warfarin Anticoagulation Clinic at the Mayo Clinic in Florida who were taking warfarin for non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Patients were labeled as 'knowledgeable' or 'not knowledgeable' regarding warfarin therapy according to the results of a cross-sectional questionnaire. The majority of patients in both the knowledgeable and not knowledgeable groups displayed understanding that they were taking warfarin for atrial fibrillation (valvular vs non-valvular atrial fibrillation was not an included answer choice). However, there was a clear lack of knowledge amongst patients with atrial fibrillation in both groups about their stroke risk while on and off warfarin, and their risk of major bleeding or adverse events related to their warfarin therapy. There was only a significant difference between the two groups regarding their knowledge of what increases or decreases the risk of bleeding while on warfarin. There was no major difference between the groups with regards to demographic and medical characteristics, except that 'not knowledgeable' patients tended to have more peripheral vascular disease, ulcer disease, and moderate-severe renal disease compared to 'knowledgeable' patients. Small- and medium-sized basins are widely distributed, and some contain commercial gas reservoirs demonstrating their gas-generation potential. The Xuanhua Basin, which is a small-sized coal-bearing basin in north China, includes a promising target for shale-gas exploration in the Xiahuayuan Formation. In this study, we used this basin as a case study to assess the critical geochemical features for small or medium-sized basins to form commercial gas reservoirs. Total organic carbon (TOC) analysis, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, microscopic observation of macerals, vitrinite reflectance measurement and kerogen stable carbon isotope analysis were performed to characterise the organic geochemistry of the Xiahuayuan shales. The original total organic carbon (TOCo) content and hydrocarbon-generative potential (S2o) were reconstructed to further evaluate the gas-generation potential of these shales. In addition, geochemical data of shales from other similar-sized basins with gas discoveries were compared. The results showed that the kerogen from the Xiahuayuan Formation is Type III (gas-prone), and macerals are dominated by vitrinite. TOC values showed a strong heterogeneity in the vertical profiles, with most higher than 1.5 wt%. The measured Ro values ranged from 1.4 to 2.0%. However, thermal maturity was not correlated with the present-day burial depth with higher maturity in the wells closest to the diabase intrusion centre. The remaining generation potential (S2) averaged 0.91 mg HC/g rock, equal to 1.4 cm3 CH4/g rock, and the average amount of hydrocarbon generated was 4.33 cm3 CH4/g rock. In small and medium-sized basins, the TOC content of commercially developed gas shales ranged from 0.5 to 2.5 wt%, organic matter was mainly humic (gas-prone), and the burial depth was generally shallow. Biogenic gas reservoirs for commercial exploitation tend to have larger shale thicknesses (120–800 m) than thermogenic gas reservoirs (60–90 m). The Xiahuayuan Formation is a good gas-source rock with gas-prone kerogen type, relatively high TOC values and moderate thermal maturity. The average amount of hydrocarbon generated from the Xiahuayuan shales is about 4.33 cm3 CH4/g rock, indicating a potential to form a shale gas reservoir. Owing to the influence of diabase intrusions, the Xiahuayuan shales have entered the dry gas window at relatively shallow-buried depths. Small- and medium-sized basins have the potential to generate commercial gas reservoirs with the generated volume mainly a product of the thickness and maturity of black shales. Coal measures located in marginal sea basins are important hydrocarbon source rocks. For the purpose of effectively guiding future oil and gas exploration, the characteristics and distribution patterns of coal seams in coal measures of a marginal sea basin are systematically outlined. Coal measures in marginal sea basins can have large thicknesses, but the individual coal seams can be very thin and lack lateral continuity. In the study area, the organic micro-components of the coal are dominated by vitrinite, with very low amounts of inertinite and liptinite. The amount of inorganic microscopic components is large, but with limited drilling results, few cores and thin coal seams, which are easily overlooked during logging activities, a comprehensive analysis of the logging data may improve efficiency in coal-seam identification and thickness determination. The development and distribution of coal seams in marginal sea basins are controlled by various factors, including (1) paleoclimatic and paleobotanic conditions, which could fundamentally limit coal formation, (2) coal-forming sedimentary environmental conditions that may limit the scope of coal-seam development from a macroscopic perspective, and (3) paleotectonic and paleotopographic conditions that define the coal-forming structures. Therefore, the descending and rising cycles of base-levels, along with changes in the growth rates of the accommodation spaces, can be used to determine the horizons that are potentially favourable for coal formation and can also indicate the migration trends of coal-forming environments on the structural plane. Seismic wave impedance inversion methods could be utilised for semi-quantitative assistance for prediction of coal seams. In summary, for models of coal-seam development in marginal sea basins, the grades should be divided according to reliability, and the different reliability levels should be predicted separately. The characteristics of coal seams developed in marginal sea basins are described. The macerals of coals developed in marginal sea basins have been ascertained. A development model and distribution prediction method for coal seams are assessed according to the control factors. A model for the prediction of coal-seam distribution is presented. Organic-rich black shales from the Upper Yangtze Platform from the Upper Ordovician and lower Silurian are considered excellent source rocks and unconventional reservoirs of hydrocarbons in South China. This research combined geochemical analyses and detailed sedimentological observations to investigate the depositional controls on organic-matter abundance in the prolific black mudstone of the Wufeng Formation and Long-1 Member of the lower Silurian Longmaxi. Six primary lithofacies deposited at variable marine water depths and under different water column chemistries were identified from a ∼50 m-long profile based on microscopic observations of sediment texture and structure, and analyses of total organic carbon (TOC) content, major and trace-element abundances, and pyrite framboid size. Our results showed that TOC content is strongly correlated with terrigenous SiO2 content and the non-detrital components of V, U and Mo, suggesting that the accumulation of organic matter in the studied shale was controlled by terrigenous clast fluxes and anoxic water conditions. However, the weak covariance relationship between TOC content and productivity proxies, including P/Ti and Ba/Al, demonstrates that the accumulation of organic matter was not controlled by primary productivity. The three high-productivity lithofacies of the Wufeng Formation and Long-1 Member have low Co*Mn values, indicating active marine upwelling during sedimentary periods. The northern margin of the Upper Yangtze Platform was an open basin system influenced by the Kwangsian Orogeny and global sea-level changes, but oxygen-depleted bottom waters in the basin favoured the accumulation and preservation of sedimentary organic matter, resulting in the formation of organic-rich black shales. A previous whole-genome association analysis has identified the motilin receptor gene (MLNR), which regulates gastrointestinal motility and gastric emptying, as a candidate gene related to chicken growth. 2. MLNRmRNA was expressed in all tissues tested, and the expression level in digestive tissues was greater than in other tissues. Expression levels in the pancreas, duodenum and glandular stomach at day old and one, two and three weeks of age indicated a possible correlation with the digestive system. This suggested that the MLNR gene plays a central role in gastrointestinal tract function and affects the growth and development of chickens. Moreover, there was a significant difference in expression in the glandular stomach tissue between Ross 308 and Gushi chickens at six weeks of age. 3. Re-sequencing revealed an 86-bp insertion/deletion polymorphism in the downstream region of the MLNR gene. The mutation locus was genotyped in 2,261 individuals from nine different chicken breeds. MLNR expression levels in the glandular stomach of chickens with DD genotypes were greater than those in chickens with the ID and II genotypes. The DD genotype was the most dominant genotype in commercial broiler's (Ross 308 and Arbor Acres broilers), and the D allele frequency in these breeds exceeded 91%. The deletion mutation tended towards fixation in commercial broilers. 4. Association with growth and carcass traits analysed in a Gushi-Anka F2 intercrossed population, showed that the DD genotype was significantly associated with the greatest growth and carcass trait values, whereas values associated with the II genotype were the lowest in the F2 reciprocal cross chickens. 5. 1. Poultry meat quality is affected by many factors, among which intramuscular fat (IMF) is predominant. IMF content affects tenderness, juiciness and flavour of meat. Krüppel-like transcriptional factors (KLFs) are important regulators of adipocyte differentiation. However, little is known about the KLF9 gene associated with poultry IMF deposition, especially intramuscular adipocyte differentiation. 2. Previous work has shown that chicken KLF9 was differentially expressed during adipogenesis of intramuscular preadipocytes differentiation. In this study, the function of KLF9 in chicken intramuscular preadipocytes differentiation was investigated. 3. In the chicken preadipocyte differentiation model, KLF9 expression showed a major increase with adipogenic induction. Overexpression of KLF9 down-regulated the expression of the adipogenic marker gene AP2, and impaired triglyceride accumulation. Knockdown of KLF9 in chicken intramuscular preadipocytes increased the expression of PPARG, CEBPA and AP2. In addition, it was proposed that KLF9 may regulate adipogenesis via lncRNAs NONGGAT002209.2, NONGGAT003346.2, NONGGAT000436.2 and NONGGAT006302.2 in chicken. 4. The data supported a novel role of KLF9 in regulating chicken intramuscular preadipocyte differentiation. An interstitial solute strengthened high entropy alloy (iHEA), Fe49.5Mn30Co10Cr10C0.5 (at.%), was successfully additively manufactured via selective laser melting. The as-built iHEA exhibits a hierarchically heterogeneous microstructure with length scales across several orders of magnitude, which engenders an enhanced strength–ductility combination relative to those fabricated by conventional processing routes. The high yield strength mainly stemmed from the dislocation strengthening besides the friction stress and grain boundary strengthening. The joint activation of multiple deformation mechanisms involving dislocation slip, deformation twinning and phase transformation can maintain the steady work-hardening behavior at high stress levels, leading to a high ductility. A hierarchical interstitial high entropy alloy, Fe49.5Mn30Co10Cr10C0.5 (at.%), was successfully additively manufactured via selective laser melting. The impacts of tectonic deformation on pore structure of the Wufeng-Longmaxi shales in southern China were studied on tectonically deformed shales. Core description, thin-section observation, total organic carbon, X-ray diffraction, low-pressure gas (N2 and CO2) adsorption, mercury intrusion capillary pressure and field emission-scanning electron microscopy experiments were performed. The undeformed shale (UDS), brittle deformed shale (BDS) and ductile deformed shale (DDS) can be sorted based on the variability of original texture, fabric and structure properties of the shale samples. In addition, shale samples with different deformation mechanisms have various pore-structure characteristics. Organic matter pores and interparticle pores in clay minerals are the dominant pore types in the selected shale samples. The BDS sample has a greater proportion of macropores (or micro-fractures), indicating brittle tectonic deformation has a significant effect on the development of macropores in shales. In contrast, the DDS sample has more micropores than the UDS and BDS samples, suggesting ductile tectonic deformation may damage larger pores owing to the compression by complex tectonic stress. Consumers today not only consider the functionality and reliability of products, but also concern with affective aspects of products to meet their emotional needs. Products with good affective design can excite consumers' psychological feelings and enhance consumer satisfaction. Affective engineering aims to discover relationships between product features and affective preferences for affective design. Traditional methods rely heavily on manual surveys, which are costly, and the affective design knowledge is difficult to share and update. There is a need to develop an efficient way to build a common knowledge representation. In this paper, we propose an affective-semantic approach to automatically construct affective product taxonomy based on online consumer reviews. We incorporate affective engineering and semantic analysis to extract product features and affective attributes from online product information. We construct taxonomy by relating the extracted product features and affective attributes based on their meaning. To evaluate the effectiveness of the approach, experiments have been conducted using public available data. The results showed that the approach can effectively identify and measure affective information. It could help develop a common understanding of the design domain for reuse and expansion. An evolutionary genetic algorithm maintained using the binary heap and transitive reduction (GA-BHTR) method for addressing the partner selection problem (PSP) in a virtual enterprise is proposed. In order to reduce the time complexity of PSP, an algorithm for simplifying the directed acyclic graph that represents the precedence relationship among the subprojects in PSP is first designed. Different from the traditional regular GA, in order to avoid solutions from converging to a constant value early during evolution, multiple communities are used instead of a single community in GA-BHTR. The method and algorithms to distribute the individuals to the multiple communities while maximising the differences among the different communities are proposed. The concept of the catastrophe is introduced in the proposed GA-BHTR in order to avoid the solutions from converging to a local best solution too early after several generations of evolution. In order to maintain the capacity of the community (i.e. the number of individuals existing in a community) at a constant value while enhancing the diversity of the proposed GA-BHTR, an algorithm using the binary heap to maintain the data is designed. Currently very few computer-aided conceptual design systems are available to support the initial development of a machine tool and its structure (concept, calculation, design) and the verification of the prototype. In recent years, polychromatic sets have emerged as a promising approach for mathematical modelling. The theory, techniques, and approaches of polychromatic sets are capable of playing an important role in the conceptual design of a variety of products including machine tools. In this paper, the concept of polychromatic sets is introduced, and a polychromatic sets approach for the conceptual design of machine tools is proposed. The usefulness of the proposed method is illustrated by a conceptual design example of a machining centre of drilling, milling, and boring. Applying the proposed approach to machine tools helps to make right decisions in the conceptual design stage. Due to its powerful mathematical modelling capability, the polychromatic sets technique proposed in this paper may possibly be extended and applied to design evaluation problems encountered in other design tasks in manufacturing systems including process planning. Design optimization plays an important role in electric vehicle (EV) design. However, fluctuations in design variables and noise factors during the forming process affect the stability of optimization results. This study uses six-sigma robust design optimization to explore the lightweight design and crashworthiness of EVs with uncertainty. A full-scale finite element model of an EV is established. Then, multi-objective design optimization is performed by integrating optimal Latin hypercube sampling, radial basis functions and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II to achieve minimum peak acceleration and mass. Finally, six-sigma robust optimization designs are applied to improve the reliability and sigma level. Robust optimization using adaptive importance sampling is shown to be more efficient than that using Monte Carlo sampling. Moreover, deformation of the battery compartment and peak acceleration of the B-pillar are greatly decreased. Microscopic pore structure and water distribution are important and fundamental parameters for coalbed methane reservoir characterisation. These are closely related to the calculation/interpretation of other critical parameters, such as permeability and flow capacity. In this study, scanning electron microscopy, low-pressure nitrogen gas adsorption, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations were used to study the pore structure characteristics and water distribution of Zhaozhuang coal mine in the southeastern Qinshui Basin, PR China. The results show that the pore radius ranges from 2.066 to 594.045 nm, mainly classified as micropores and transitional pores. The micropores significantly contribute to the total pore volume. The adsorption pores (micropores and transitional pores) contribute the most to the total specific surface area. The T2 spectrum distributions of saturated water samples show two peaks. The first T2 spectrum peak is related to adsorption pores, whereas the second T2 spectrum peak is related to seepage pores. The seepage pores were not well developed as the adsorption pores. Most adsorption pores are saturated with irreducible water that could not be discharged by centrifugation, whereas the seepage pores are saturated with movable water that could be completely discharged by centrifugation. The T2 cutoff method was used to calculate the irreducible water saturation, and the irreducible water saturation of the sample was ≥90%. The irreducible water was mainly distributed in the micropores, and some of the irreducible water was distributed in the transitional pores. Configurations, stabilities and adsorption mechanisms of ground-state MonN and MonN2 (n = 1–8) clusters are calculated by using the density functional method within the PBE level. Evidently, N atoms tend to approach more Mo atoms. Doping with two N impurity prefers to occupy symmetrical position of the host Mon (n = 1–8) cluster except for Mo2N2 clusters. Mo4N, Mo6N, Mo2N2, Mo4N2 and Mo6N2 clusters have higher structural stabilities than their neighbors by the second derivative of total binding energy. Mo2N, Mo4N and Mo7N, Mo2N2, Mo5N2 and Mo7N2 clusters have higher kinetic reactivity than their neighbors by the HOMO–LUMO gaps. A total of 73 oils from the sandstone reservoir of Paleocene–Eocene Sokor 1 Formation in the Termit Basin (eastern Niger) were analysed to investigate the distribution characteristics of biomarkers. Most of the oil samples are quite similar in their organic geochemical characteristics and should have been derived from the same source bed/source kitchen. The homogenisation temperatures of aqueous inclusions in Paleocene–Eocene reservoir of the Termit Basin vary with a range of 76–125 °C. By combining the homogenisation temperatures with the burial and geothermal histories reconstructed by 1-dimensional basin modelling, the timing and episode of oil charge can be obtained, i.e. 13 to 0 Ma for Paleocene–Eocene reservoirs in the Termit Basin. Two presentative geochemical parameters, i.e. Ts / (Ts + Tm) and 2,4-dibenzothiophene/1,4-dibenzothiophene (2,4-DMDBT/1,4-DMDBT) were applied to trace the oil migration direction and filling pathway. The preferred oil-filling points in the northwest section of the Termit Basin were determined, and the promising exploratory targets were proposed for further oil exploration in this region. Seriphidium transiliense, or subshrub sagebrush, is one of the most important forage resources for livestock in many arid lands, but such resources have been threatened by overgrazing for a long time. A 2013 vegetation survey of an original sagebrush rangeland (2400 ha) in the Tianshan Mountains revealed that nearly half of the area once under sagebrush has been replaced by annual species. This is due to the continual and rapid increase in livestock numbers over the past 30 years. Three smaller sites with different grazing scenarios: no grazing (Site N), a decline (Site 1), and an increase (Site 2) in livestock numbers, were selected to monitor recent changes (from 2004 to 2013) in vegetation biomass and the degree of dominance by sagebrush. Supplanting happened at Site 2 but little occurred at Site 1. There were significant differences between Site 2 and Site 1 in standing biomass in Spring and Summer, but no significant differences in Summer between Site 1 and Site N. The supplanting of sagebrush marks the completion of a dynamic process – in which rainfall plays a crucial role – of damage to sagebrush from heavy grazing in drought years and its rehabilitation by light grazing in some good years. Plant biomass loss was greatest when the land was first subjected to heavy grazing. Sagebrush tends to exist as a sole-dominant species rather than a companion species in sagebrush communities. Transmission spectrum and refractive index of (1−x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–xPbTiO3 (PMN-xPT) single crystals were studied and second-harmonic generation signal of the crystal powder was measured in order to characterize the nonlinear optical properties of the crystals. The poling procedure led to increase in the optical transmittance in visible spectral region. PMN-xPT single crystals were optically negative and the refractive index increased with PT concentration. Moreover, PMN-xPT crystals proved to have high nonlinear optical properties and the second-harmonic generation signal measured in powder of PMN-0.39PT crystal was greater than that of KH2PO4, KTiOPO4, and LiNbO3. Objective: This study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in a representative sample of postmenopausal Chinese women.Methods: A total of 20,008 postmenopausal Chinese women were recruited to this cross-sectional study between February 2014 and March 2016. The prevalence of symptomatic POP, defined as any stage II or higher POP resulting in symptoms, was assessed using questionnaires and physical examinations. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess factors associated with symptomatic POP.Results: Among all women with natural menopause included in the study (mean age =61.98 ± 10.62 years), 2962 of 20,008 women (14.80%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 14.3-15.3%) had symptomatic POP. In the multivariate analysis, women were more likely to have symptomatic POP if aged 50-59 years (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.322, 95% CI 1.123-1.560), 60-69 years (AOR 1.603, 95% CI 1.352-1.907), or above 70 years (AOR 1.824, 95% CI 1.158-2.197), compared with women aged 40-49 years. Having delivered two times (AOR 1.145, 95% CI 1.105-1.292) or three or more times (AOR 1.384, 95% CI 1.214-1.578) was significantly associated with symptomatic POP. Compared with normal weight women, overweight women (AOR 1.365, 95% CI 1.247-1.494) and obese women (AOR 1.548, 95% CI 1.344-1.780) were more likely to have POP. Living in an urban area, smoking, alcohol consumption, cough, constipation, mental labor, physical disease, and gynecological diseases were also associated with symptomatic POP.Conclusions: Symptomatic POP affects nearly 15% of postmenopausal women in China. The objective of this study was to determine the dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) degradation parameters of several commercially available concentrate feed ingredients used in Shaanbei White Cashmere Goat (SWCG). Three 4-year-old female SWCGs fitted with permanent rumen fistula were fed with corn straw and concentrate feed. Tested energy and protein feed ingredients were corn, wheat bran (WB), corn germ meal, soybean meal (SBM), rape seed meal (RSM), and distillers dried grains. The feed samples were placed in a nylon bag and incubated in the rumen for 0, 2, 6, 12, 24, 36, and 48 h to measure the ruminal disappearance of DM and CP. The exponential model was used to calculate the degradation kinetics. There were significant differences between sources in terms of DM and CP disappearance and degradability. In terms of energy feed ingredients, the potential degradability of DM and CP of corn was significantly higher than those of the other energy feed ingredients, whereas the effective degradability (ED) of CP of WB at three outflow rates was significantly higher than those of the others. In protein feed ingredients, SBM had the highest potential degradability of DM and CP. Furthermore, the ED of DM of SBM at three outflow rates was significantly higher than those of the other protein feed ingredients, whereas the ED of CP of RSM at three outflow rates was significantly higher than those of others. Those feed ingredients with low degradability can increase the bypass nutrients, which will be digested in the small intestine. The degradation parameters obtained in this experiment using SWCG would be useful in improving the accuracy of formulation of cashmere goat diet in Northwest of China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

1. FGF1 and FGF10, two paracrine members of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) gene family, play critical roles in the development, structural and metabolic remodelling of adipose tissue. 2. The objective of this study was to investigate the expression profiles of FGF1 and FGF10 genes in breast muscle and thigh muscle in 5 developmental stages (1, 81, 119, 154 and 210 d old) in Tibetan chickens. The possible relationships between expression of these genes and intramuscular fat (IMF) content were analysed in Tibetan chickens. 3. Expression profiles showed that FGF1 and FGF10 mRNA were ubiquitously expressed in various tissues of 154-d-old Tibetan chickens. Lung tissue contained the highest amount of FGF1 and FGF10 mRNA while breast muscle and thigh muscle exhibited lower levels of FGF1 and FGF10 mRNA in both males and females compared with other tissues (P < 0.05). Temporal expression of FGF1 and FGF10 in breast and thigh muscle showed similar tendencies in males and females, respectively, with peaks in thigh muscle at 119-d-old and breast muscle in 1-d-old males and females, respectively. 4. Correlation analysis suggested that gender had an influence on the relationships of FGF1 and FGF10 expression with IMF content in thigh muscle. The RNA levels of FGF1 and FGF10 genes in male thigh muscle were positively related to IMF content of Tibetan chickens (P < 0.01), while the correlations were shown to be negative in female thigh muscle (P > 0.05). 5. These results provide a basis for functional elucidation of FGF1 and FGF10 genes on adipocyte development and intramuscular fat deposition, as well as selective breeding and resource exploration of local poultry breeds. The Cauchy problem for the Helmholtz equation is considered. This problem is severely ill-posed, that is, the solution does not depend continuously on the data. To solve the problem numerically a mollification method is proposed. Convergence on error estimates between the exact solution and its approximation are obtained. Affective design has received more and more attention. Kansei engineering is widely used to transform consumers’ affective needs into product design. Yet many previous studies used questionnaire survey to obtain consumers’ affective responses, which is usually in a small scale, not updated, time-consuming and labour-intensive. The life cycle of a product is getting shorter and shorter, social trends are changing unconsciously, which results in the change of consumers’ affective responses as well. Therefore, it’s necessary to develop an approach for collecting consumers’ affective responses extensively, dynamically and automatically. In this paper, a machine learning-based affective design dynamic mapping approach (MLADM) is proposed to overcome those challenges. It collects consumers’ affective responses extensively. Besides, the collection process is continuous because new users can express their affective responses through online questionnaire. The products information is captured from online shopping websites and the products’ features and images are extracted to generate questionnaire automatically. The data obtained are utilised to establish the relationship between design elements and consumers’ affective responses. Four machine learning algorithms are used to model the relationship between design elements and consumers’ affective responses. The current product design not only takes into account the function and reliability, but also concerns about the affective aspects in order to meet the consumers’ emotional needs. However, there is always a gap between affective intentions of manufacturers and affective responses of consumers. Traditional methods rely on manual surveys to understand the gap, which is costly, time-consuming and in a small scale. In this paper, we propose a text mining method to extract affective intentions and affective responses from the online product description and consumer reviews. We build an affective profile for each product to visualise the gap between affective responses and affective intentions of the product. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a case study is conducted based on the public data from Amazon.com. We construct affective profiles for selected products and analyze affective gaps. We also evaluate the usefulness of the extracted affective information in product recommendations. The results showed that the gap between consumer's affective responses and manufacturer's affective intentions can be identified and visualised, which may help manufacturers to improve their products and services.
