The retention of hydrogen (H2) bubbles generated by water radiolysis was quantitatively studied in a high-viscous suspension of carbonate slurry consisting of a mixture of suspended solid (SS) of magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) precipitates under strongly alkaline conditions, like the radioactive wastes discharged from the coagulation sedimentation (co-precipitation) process at the multinuclide removal equipment in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. The H2 retention properties were evaluated in two types of carbonate slurry with different hydrophilicity: the hydrophilic "current type" and the hydrophobic "return type." Then, their properties were compared with those in another suspension of clay suspension of bentonite. The hydrophilicity of the surface of the SS particles was evaluated from two different adsorption isotherms of water (H2O) vapor on the surface, as well as those of Mg(OH)2 and CaCO3 particles, simulating the precipitates in the slurry. The H2O molecules were strongly chemically adsorbed on the Mg(OH)2, while they were weakly physically adsorbed on the CaCO3. Since the amount of chemical adsorption on the SS surface of the hydrophilic slurry was almost the same as that on the Mg(OH)2 surface, Mg(OH)2 was found to be dominant on the SS surface. From the comparison between the amounts of chemical adsorption and H2O in the slurry, it was confirmed that H2O molecules must be shared among the SS particles, and this sharing of H2O molecules formed the structural viscosity in the slurry, different from that in the clay suspension where electrostatic bonding between the fine clay minerals forms the viscosity. The retention of H2 bubbles in (by) the slurry was evaluated from the difference in the amount of H2 observed with and without stirring the slurry after 60Co γ irradiation. The observed amount increased linearly with increasing absorbed dose by the slurry to obtain H2 generation yield (G-value): Gtotal (with stirring) and Gstat (without stirring). The Gtotal was independent of the sample height, whereas the Gstat decreased with increasing the height. This indicated that the higher the height, the more difficult it was for H2 bubbles to be released. From the direct observation of H2 bubbles after irradiation, the growth of H2 bubbles with increasing the dose was evaluated to obtain the resisting force of H2 bubbles to the slurry. The H2 bubbles were confirmed to be retained in the slurry because the resistance was lower than the shear strength of the slurry (yield value at rest). The ability of the slurry to retain the H2 bubbles was evaluated from the sample height dependence of the relative G-value, Gstat/Gtotal. The log-log plot of the G-value and height gave a straight line, and the slope of the hydrophilic slurry became larger than that of the hydrophobic one. This difference indicated the effect of structural viscosity, which was observed in the H2 bubble retention in the clay suspension. In addition, the slopes for the hydrophobic slurry and treated water were significantly different, and this indicated the effect of steric hindrance by the SS particles. We conducted a case study to assess 1) physical and mental changes; 2) self-assessments of symptoms; 3) coping strategies; and 4) adaptation to physical and mental changes by semi-structured interview survey among Vietnamese female migrant workers working in Japan under the Technical Intern Training Program. We found they experienced female-specific physical changes, and some interns' symptoms worsened because they did not consult anyone about their symptoms. We propose increasing opportunities to learn about possible physical and mental changes caused by migration and to improve health literacy, including prevention, coping, help-seeking, and consultations about health concerns among female technical interns. A small-molecule cysteine sulfenic acid (Cys–SOH) was synthesized and isolated as stable crystals, for the first time, by utilizing a nanosized molecular cavity as a protective cradle. The cradled Cys–SOH was synthesized by direct oxidation of the corresponding cysteine thiol with H2O2 under basic conditions and its structure was established by X-ray crystallographic analysis. In the reaction of the cradled Cys–SOH with a thiol to produce the disulfide, a remarkable acceleration was observed upon the addition of an amine base. This suggests the important role of base in the reaction of Cys–SOH with thiols in biological systems. The cradled Cys–SOH was reduced to the cysteine thiol by dithiothreitol or triphenylphosphine. The high stability and sufficient reactivity of the cradled Cys–SOH indicate its usefulness as a small-molecule model compound for better understanding the chemical behavior of Cys–SOH in biological systems. Animals possess a circadian central clock in the brain, where circadian behavioural rhythms are generated. In the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster), the central clock comprises a network of approximately 150 clock neurons, which is important for the maintenance of a coherent and robust rhythm. Several neuropeptides involved in the network have been identified, including Pigment-dispersing factor (PDF) and CCHamide1 (CCHa1) neuropeptides. PDF signals bidirectionally to CCHa1-positive clock neurons; thus, the clock neuron groups expressing PDF and CCHa1 interact reciprocally. However, the role of these interactions in molecular and behavioural rhythms remains elusive. In this study, we generated Pdf01 and CCHa1SK8 double mutants and examined their locomotor activity-related rhythms. The single mutants of Pdf01 or CCHa1SK8 displayed free-running rhythms under constant dark conditions, whereas approximately 98% of the double mutants were arrhythmic. In light-dark conditions, the evening activity of the double mutants was phase-advanced compared with that of the single mutants. In contrast, both the single and double mutants had diminished morning activity. These results suggest that the effects of the double mutation varied in behavioural parameters. The double and triple mutants of per01, Pdf01, and CCHa1SK8 further revealed that PDF signalling plays a role in the suppression of activity during the daytime under a clock-less background. In current study, a test program is designed to observe the influence of wetting stress paths on behavior and instability of unsaturated soil in stress state space. The mechanical behavior was studied by performing three test series in constant matric suction plane. In first series, water infiltration was performed together with shearing starting from zero (0 kPa) deviatoric stress. In second series, first water was infiltrated at zero (0 kPa) deviatoric stress then samples were sheared in drained pore water pressure conditions. In third series, water was first infiltrated at zero deviatoric stress then specimens were sheared in undrained pore water pressure conditions. Instability was studied in constant shear stress plane by first shearing soil up to predefined level of deviatoric stress then infiltrating water keeping deviatoric stress constant on the specimen. This research also describes how unsaturated soil behavior and instability is varied with variation in net confining stresses when suction is decreased from initial measured value to start water infiltration with different wetting stress paths and their effect on shear state and failure surface in stress state space. We investigated the associations between endothelial dysfunction (ED) as evaluated by the reactive hyperemia index (RHI) obtained using Endo-PAT2000® and atherosclerotic risk factors in patients who underwent coronary artery angiography (CAG). The subjects consisted of 191 patients who were clinically suspected to have CAD and underwent CAG, and in whom we could perform Endo-PAT2000®. We divided the patients into ED (RHI<1.67, n = 71) and non-ED (RHI≥1.67, n = 120) groups. The ED group was significantly older and showed a higher ratio of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (L/H) than the non-ED group. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the associations between the presence of ED and age, gender, and BMI in addition to L/H. Age [odds ratio (OR) = 1.03, p =.02] and L/H (OR = 1.64, p =.01) were identified as significant independent markers of the presence of ED. Next, we divided 122 patients with statin treatment into ED (n = 40) and non-ED (n = 82) groups. The ED group tended to have higher L/H and lower HDL-C than the non-ED group. HDL-C (OR = 0.95, p =.01) and age (OR = 1.05, p =.04) were identified as independent markers of the presence of ED. L/H was an independent marker of the presence of ED in patients without dyslipidemia. In addition, among patients with statin treatment, HDL-C was an independent marker of the presence of ED. Visit-to-visit variability (VVV) in blood pressure (BP) has been reported to be a strong predictor of cardiovascular disease. However, the association between VVV in BP and coronary plaque composition has not been fully elucidated. One hundred-two consecutive patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using integrated backscatter (IB) intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), and who had at least six clinic visits a year before PCI were included. We measured systolic and diastolic BP (SBP and DBP) at each visit and determined VVV in BP expressed as the standard deviation of the average BP. Grayscale and IB IVUS examinations were performed for the culprit lesion of a coronary artery just before PCI. There were no significant associations between the average SBP or DBP and various IVUS parameters. However, VVV in SBP was positively correlated with both the percentage (%) of atheroma volume (β = 0.23, p =.02) and % lipid volume (β = 0.53, p <.0001). VVV in DBP was positively correlated with % lipid volume (β = 0.24, p =.01), while there was no significant correlation between VVV in DBP and % atheroma volume. A multivariable linear regression analysis showed that VVV in SBP was independently associated with % atheroma volume (p =.04) and % lipid volume (p <.001). Larger VVV in SBP was significantly associated with an increased plaque burden and lipid composition at the culprit lesion of a coronary artery in CAD patients. BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that the 5-oxo-1,2,4-oxadiazole moiety of azilsartan (AZL), which represents a small difference in the molecular structures of AZL and candesartan (CAN) [angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) blockers], may be responsible for the molecular effects of AZL. METHODS: We examined the binding affinities of AZL and CAN to AT1R, along with their ability to block receptor activity. A competition binding study, inositol phosphate (IP) production assay and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) assay were performed using wild-type (WT) and mutants AT1R-transfected cells. RESULTS: The binding affinities of CAN and AZL were reduced by > 5-fold for Y35F, W84F, R167K, K199Q and I288A compared with WT. In addition, AZL showed a > 5-fold reduction in its binding affinity to V108A. CAN and AZL exhibited > 20-fold and > 100-fold reductions in binding affinity to R167K, respectively. The loss of binding affinity of AZL to R167K was greater than that of CAN. CAN-7H exhibited a > 10-fold reduction in binding affinity to R167K compared with CAN. On the other hand, the binding affinity of AZL-7H to R167K was comparable to that of AZL. While 10-6M CAN and CAN-7H partly blocked Ang II-induced IP production in R167K, 10-6M AZL and AZL-7H did not. In addition, 10-6M CAN, but not 10-6M AZL, partly blocked Ang II-induced ERK activation in R167K. CONCLUSIONS: The interaction between 5-oxo-1,2,4-oxadiazole in AZL and Arg167 in the AT1R appears to be more important than the interaction between the tetrazole ring in CAN and Arg167. The associations between microalbuminuria and various parameters of flow-mediated vasodilatation (FMD) are not completely understood. We retrospectively analyzed 265 consecutive patients who underwent coronary angiography and in whom we could measure FMD and the urine albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR). Using 15 continuous measurement approaches, we measured FMD as the magnitude of the percentage change in the brachial artery diameter from baseline to peak (bFMD), the maximum FMD rate calculated as the maximal slope of dilation (FMD-MDR), and the integrated FMD response calculated as the area under the dilation curve during the 60- and 120-s dilation periods (FMD-AUC60 and FMD-AUC120). We divided the patients into two groups according to UACR: normoalbuminuria (NOR, n = 211) and microalbuminuria (MIC, n = 54). The MIC group showed a significantly higher percentage of coronary artery disease than the NOR group. FMD-AUC60 and FMD-AUC120, but not FMD-MDR, in the MIC group were significantly lower than those in the NOR group. On the other hand, bFMD in the MIC group tended to be lower than that in the NOR group, but this difference was not significant. A multiple regression analysis indicated that FMD-AUC120 and diabetes mellitus were predictors of MIC. Finally, we defined the cut-off value of FMD-AUC120 for the presence of MIC in all patients as 8.4 mm x second (sensitivity 0.640, specificity 0.588) by a receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis. Adverse parenting is associated with an increased risk for the development of mood and behavioral disorders. In this study, we assessed the perceived parental bonding of 232 medical students using the parental bonding instrument (PBI) and extracted 22 students who reported their parents’ rearing attitudes as affectionless control (LOW; low care, high overprotection). Using the 28-item general health questionnaire, the Zung self-rating depression scale (Zung-SDS), the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), and the Spielberger state-trait-anxiety-inventory (STAI), physical and mental state of the LOW students were compared with those of 30 students who reported their parental bonding as optimal (OPT; high care and low overprotection). These questionnaire measurements demonstrated significantly higher anxiety and depressive mood in the LOW students versus the OPT students. Compared with the OPT students, the LOW students also exhibited a significantly reduced salivary cortisol awakening response (CAR) without changes across the rest of the diurnal salivary cortisol profile. Among glucocorticoid-related genes examined (GR,ADRB2,IκBα, IL10, IL1R2, IL1RN,MR,MC2R,TGFB1,TGFB2andFASLG), real-time reverse transcription-PCR showed that the LOW students significantly increased expression of a dominant negative glucocorticoid receptor β (GRβ) mRNA and decreased β2-adrenergic receptor (ADRB2) mRNA levels in circulating leukocytes. These results suggest that negative perception of parents’ child-rearing attitudes may be associated with anxiety and depressive mood and altered glucocorticoid signaling even in healthy young adults. Background: During radiofrequency (RF) hyperthermia treatment, hot-spot phenomena may occur and prevent treatment continuation if the output is not lowered. We previously reported a significant correlation between the initial energy output at which output-limiting symptoms occurred and patient status. Patients with a complete clinical response had significantly increased temperature, while some patients with partial clinical response and stable disease had increased temperature, depending on the occurrence of output-limiting symptoms. To predict the initial energy output at which output-limiting symptoms occur, we performed multiple regression analysis with the parameters of patients’ physical status.Materials and methods: Hyperthermia alone or concomitant with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy was applied in 62 patients with malignant disease for a total of 310 treatments with a Thermotron RF-8 between December 2011 and April 2014.Results: No output-limiting symptoms were shown in 65.5% of 310 treatments. Pain (29.7%), micturition desire (1.9%), skin discomfort (0.6%), subcutaneous induration (1.6%), cold sensation (0.6%), and nausea (0.3%) were reported in the 310 treatments. A good predictive equation for initial energy output at which output-limiting symptoms occur was determined with two parameters, initial time of an output-limiting symptom onset, and thickness of the fat of the abdominal wall. Multiple regression analysis showed an adjusted R2 = 0.99 and variance inflation factor < 2.Conclusions: We present a good predictive equation for initial energy output at which output-limiting symptoms occur. A trans-chelating chiral bisphosphine, PhTRAP, allows the ruthenium-catalyzed hydrogenation of various azoles to proceed with high enantioselectivity. The PhTRAP–ruthenium catalyst transformed indoles, pyrroles, imidazoles, and oxazoles into the corresponding chiral heterocycles. Naphthalenes are also reduced with hydrogen by the chiral ruthenium catalyst, exclusively giving tetralins. 1. We aimed to develop a simple pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) model to predict the onset and degree of severe toxic side effects that severely limit the use of many anticancer agents, such as myelosuppression, in rats. 2. Our PK-PD model consisted of a two-compartment PK model, with one compartment representing proliferative cells and some transit compartments consisting of maturing cells, while the other compartment represented circulating blood cells for the PD model. 3. The semi-physiological PK-PD model effectively captured the features of myelosuppression and the degree of the off-target toxicities observed after 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) chemotherapy, and helped simultaneously simulate the whole time course for alterations in leukocyte, neutrophil and lymphocyte counts after 5-FU treatment in rats. Interestingly, by plotting the nadir period of leukocyte, neutrophil and lymphocyte counts as determined by PK-PD analytical simulation curves against the area under the plasma 5-FU concentration-time curve ( AUC0-∞) after intravenous administration of 5-FU, a linear relationship was inferred, with r2 = 0.989, 0.877 and 0.956, respectively. 4. Hu antigen R (HuR) regulates stress responses through stabilizing and/or facilitating the translation of target mRNAs. The human TRA2β gene encodes splicing factor transformer 2β (Tra2β) and generates 5 mRNA isoforms (TRA2β1 to -5) through alternative splicing. Exposure of HCT116 colon cancer cells to sodium arsenite stimulated checkpoint kinase 2 (Chk2)- and mitogen-activated protein kinase p38 (p38MAPK)-mediated phosphorylation of HuR at positions S88 and T118. This induced an association between HuR and the 39-nucleotide (nt) proximal region of TRA2β exon 2, generating a TRA2β4 mRNA that includes exon 2, which has multiple premature stop codons. HuR knockdown or Chk2/p38MAPK double knockdown inhibited the arsenite-stimulated production of TRA2β4 and increased Tra2β protein, facilitating Tra2β-dependent inclusion of exons in target pre-mRNAs. The effects of HuR knockdown or Chk2/p38MAPK double knockdown were also confirmed using a TRA2β minigene spanning exons 1 to 4, and the effects disappeared when the 39-nt region was deleted from the minigene. In endogenous HuR knockdown cells, the overexpression of a HuR mutant that could not be phosphorylated (with changes of serine to alanine at position 88 [S88A], S100A, and T118A) blocked the associated TRA2β4 interaction and TRA2β4 generation, while the overexpression of a phosphomimetic HuR (with mutations S88D, S100D, and T118D) restored the TRA2β4-related activities. This study investigated the friction and wear behaviors of polyetheretherketone composites containing carbon fibers (PEEK-CF) sliding against stainless steel in terms of their dependencies on gas environments. Sliding tests with a block-on-ring apparatus were conducted in humid/dry air and dry nitrogen at normal temperature and nitrogen at cryogenic temperature of 113 K. Friction and wear significantly decreased when sliding occurred in low-humidity, low-oxygen, and low-temperature environments. The friction coefficient, initially 0.25 in ambient humid air, decreased to below 0.10 in the dry nitrogen environment and 0.03 in nitrogen at 113 K. Microscopic observations, surface roughness measurements, and surface composition analysis of worn surfaces were conducted after the sliding tests. After sliding in humid air, the surface roughness of the PEEK-CF block was increased from its initial value by adhesions of large wear particles. However, the surface roughness of the block decreased due to the formations of tribofilms that were micrometers thick and composed of fine wear particles of polymer and carbon fibers after sliding in dry nitrogen. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and the Raman spectroscopy analysis indicated increased carbon content with graphite structures on the worn surface after sliding in dry nitrogen. Consequently, it was considered that PEEK-CF changed its wear process in the dry nitrogen environment and formed a smooth surface with carbon particles containing graphite, which is thought to be advantageous in reducing friction. We studied seven cases of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Six of the patients had presenilin 1 (PS1) mutations (PS1AD). Three novel PS1 mutations (T99A, H131R and L219R) and three other missense mutations (M233L, H163R and V272A) were found in the PS1AD group. We measured the levels of phosphorylated tau (ptau-181, ptau-199) and Aβ (Aβ1-42, Aβ1-40 and Aβ1-38) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of PS1AD patients, early-onset sporadic AD (EOSAD), late-onset sporadic AD (LOSAD) and non-demented subjects (ND). The CSF levels of Aβ1-42 in the three AD groups were significantly lower than those of the ND group ( p < 0.0001). CSF levels of Aβ1-42 in the PS1AD group were significantly lower than those in the two sporadic AD groups. The Aβ1-40 and Aβ1-38 levels in the CSF of the PS1AD group were significantly lower than those of the three other groups ( p < 0.0001, respectively). The levels of Aβ1-40, Aβ1-38 and Aβ1-42 in the CSF of the PS1AD group remained lower than those of the ND group for 4 years. The relationship between preoperative prealbumin and cancer survival has not been fully elucidated. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between preoperative nutritional conditions, including prealbumin and albumin concentrations, and the risk of recurrence in cases with operable colorectal carcinoma. One hundred fifty-eight patients who underwent elective colorectal resection were analyzed in this study. Of the eligible cases, 56 (35.4%) had decreased serum prealbumin and 15 (9.5%) had decreased serum albumin preoperatively. Among 158 cases in this study, 18 (11.4%) had disease recurrence. In the univariate analysis, the depth of tumor invasion, lymph node metastasis, lymphovascular invasion, serum albumin, prealbumin, and carcinoembryonic antigen were the factors significantly associated with disease recurrence. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that only serum albumin was a predictor of the recurrence; however, serum prealbumin lost its significance on multivariate analysis. Time to tumor recurrence by Kaplan-Meier curves significantly differed among patients with low serum albumin and prealbumin level. Our results suggest that prealbumin and albumin may be sensitive indicators of the risk of recurrent disease; however, low serum albumin levels are more useful than prealbumin in predicting short-term disease recurrence in operable colorectal cancer. Chronic academic stress responses were assessed by measuring mental state, salivary cortisol levels, and the glucocorticoid receptor ( GR) gene expression in healthy Japanese medical students challenging the national medical license examination. Mental states of 17 male and 9 female medical undergraduates, aged 25.0  ±±  1.2 years (mean  ±±  SD), were assessed by the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) 2 months before, 2 days before, and 1 month after the examination. At the same time points, saliva and blood were collected. STAI-state scores peaked 2 days before the examination. Scores on STAI-trait and SDS, and salivary cortisol levels were consistently higher during the pre-examination period. One month after the examination, all these measures had significantly decreased to baseline levels. Real-time reverse transcription PCR showed that this chronic anxious state did not change the expression of the functional GRαα mRNA isoform in peripheral leukocytes, while it resulted in reduced expression of the GRββ isoform 2 days before the examination. Our results replicate and extend a significant impact of chronic academic stressors on the mental state of healthy Japanese medical students and suggest a possible association of GRββ gene in response to psychological stress. We previously observed that nitric oxide (NO) exposure increases the stability of mRNAs encoding heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) and TIEG-1 in human and mouse fibroblasts. Here, we have used microarrays to look broadly for changes in mRNA stability in response to NO treatment. Using human IMR-90 and mouse NIH 3T3 fibroblasts treated with actinomycin D to block de novo transcription, microarray analysis suggested that the stability of the majority of mRNAs was unaffected. Among the mRNAs that were stabilized by NO treatment, seven transcripts were found in both IMR-90 and NIH 3T3 cells (CHIC2, GADD45B, HO-1, PTGS2, RGS2, TIEG, and ID3) and were chosen for further analysis. All seven mRNAs showed at least one hit of a signature motif for the stabilizing RNA-binding protein (RBP) HuR; accordingly, ribonucleoprotein immunoprecipitation analysis revealed that all seven mRNAs associated with HuR. In keeping with a functional role of HuR in the response to NO, a measurable fraction of HuR increased in the cytoplasm following NO treatment. However, among the seven transcripts, only HO-1 mRNA showed a robust increase in the level of its association with HuR following NO treatment. In turn, HO-1 mRNA and protein levels were significantly reduced when HuR levels were silenced in IMR-90 cells, and they were elevated when HuR was overexpressed. In sum, our results indicate that NO stabilizes mRNA subsets in fibroblasts, identify HuR as an RBP implicated in the NO response, reveal that HuR alone is insufficient for stabilizing several mRNAs by NO, and show that HO-1 induction by NO is regulated by HuR. Background: Gastric carcinoma patients with peritoneal dissemination have an extremely poor prognosis. Attempting to improve regional control and decrease the risk of complications related to hyperthermic chemotherapy, we applied a new treatment modality using a combination of gastrectomy with postoperative intraperitoneal hyperthermo-chemotherapy (PIHC) using Thermotron RF-8. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of PIHC in advanced gastric carcinoma patients with peritoneal seeding. Patients and methods: Between March 2002 and April 2006, 20 gastric carcinoma patients with peritoneal dissemination were allocated to two groups in the patient's selection. The PIHC group (10 patients) received a 60-min PIHC with a cisplatin dose of 80 mg/m2 two weeks after surgery, and the control group (10 patients) received surgery alone. Thermotron RF-8 is a heating device that can raise temperatures in both superficial and deep-seated tumours using 8 MHz radiofrequency electromagnetic waves as a source of heat. Results: No patients in either group had life-threatening complications. The most frequent nonhaematologic toxicity (grade 3) was nausea. The one-, two-, and three-year cumulative survival rates for the PIHC group were 60%, 48%, and 36%, respectively, whereas those for the control group were 40%, 10%, and 0%, respectively. The survival rates for the PIHC group were significantly higher than those for the control group. Conclusion: Although this study was conducted non-randomly with a small number of patients, the PIHC group had a higher survival rate and better prognosis compared with the control group. Purpose : The therapeutic and adverse effects of pre-operative chrono-chemoradiation with local hyperthermia for patients with rectal adenocarcinoma were evaluated. Materials and methods : Pre-operative radiation therapy of a total dose of 40&ThickSpace;Gy ( n &ThickSpace;=&ThickSpace;10) or 50&ThickSpace;Gy ( n &ThickSpace;=&ThickSpace;19) on the whole pelvis and hyperthermia once a week during the radiation therapy for 1&ThickSpace;h were performed for patients with T2–T4 rectal adenocarcinoma. Chemotherapy consisted of 5-FU (250&ThickSpace;mg&ThickSpace;m -2 &ThickSpace;per&ThickSpace;day) and LV (25&ThickSpace;mg&ThickSpace;m -2 &ThickSpace;per&ThickSpace;day) administered by continuous infusion in the night for 5 days a week in the second and fourth weeks of radiation. Results : Grade 3+ toxicities were seen only in two patients (6.9%). A significant down staging was seen in 41.4% of all cases and 52.6% of cases with a radiation dose of 50&ThickSpace;Gy. Of the patients who had received surgical resection of a tumour, three (11.1%) had no residue pathologically in the specimen and eight (29.6%) had microscopic lesions. Conclusions : These results yielded a high response rate with minimal toxicities for advanced low-rectal adenocarcinoma. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations of specific absorption rate (SAR) in a human head exposed to microwaves have, to date, been carried out on models of the head only. This was because it was believed that the body effects on the average SAR of the head could be ignored at high frequencies of around 1 GHz. That opinion, however, was based on inappropriate calculation conditions and is therefore unreliable. In this paper, we have re-examined the body effects on the SAR distributions in a realistic homogeneous model of the adult head exposed to microwaves. We found that the SAR on the eye surface of the head-only model exposed to E-polarized waves was 31% smaller than that of the whole-body model at 900 MHz, and 43% larger at 1.5 GHz. For a size that can practically be considered whole-body, it is necessary to have the top of the head to the belly for 900 MHz and to the chest area for 1.5 GHz. The previously unclear body effects of H-polarized waves were assumed to be less than those of E-polarized waves, suggesting that the chest area would be sufficient for both frequencies. The objective of this study was to investigate the biodegradation of coal-derived hydrocarbons, especially high molecular weight (HMW) components, under anaerobic conditions. For this purpose biodegradation experiments were performed, using specifically designed soil column bioreactors. For the experiment, coal-contaminated soil was prepared, which contains high molecular weight hydrocarbons at high concentration (approx. 55.5 mgC g-drysoil-1). The experiment was carried out in two different conditions: sulfate reducing (SR) condition (SO42-=10 mmol l-1 in the liquid medium) and control condition (SO42-<0.5 mmol l-1). Although no degradation was observed under the control condition, the resin fraction decreased to half (from 6,541 to 3,386 mgC g-soil-1) under SR condition, with the concomitant increase of two PAHs (phenanthrene and fluoranthene, 9 and 2.5 times, respectively). From these results, we could conclude that high molecular hydrocarbons were biodegradable and transformed to low molecular weight PAHs under the sulfate-reducing condition. Since these PAHs are known to be biologically degraded under aerobic condition, a serial combination of anaerobic (sulfate reducing) and then aerobic bioremediations could be effective and useful for the soil pollution by petroleum and/or coal derived hydrocarbons. A series of long-period superstructures (LPSs) formed in an Al-rich TiAl single crystal with a gradient composition has been observed by transmission electron microscopy. A Ti–54.7?at.%?Al single crystal was heat treated within molten Al at 1234°C, and a composition-gradient layer with an Al concentration from 55 to 75?at.% was formed at the surface of the single crystal. The composition-gradient layer exhibits ordering into different LPSs depending on the Al concentration as follows: short-range order, h-Al2Ti and one-dimensional antiphase domain structure. These LPSs have an alternate stacking of Al(002) and Ti–Al(002) layers and the ordering of the LPSs proceeds in the TiAl matrix, maintaining an orientation relationship in which Al(002) layers of the LPSs and the TiAl matrix are parallel to each other. The ordering of this type of LPS and the phase transition between these LPSs are thus interpreted as structural changes in Ti(002) layers of the Al-rich TiAl crystal. It was also observed that ordering of the orthorhombic h-Al2Ti exhibits anisotropic features depending on the direction of the composition gradient. This suggests that the long-period ordering in the TiAl crystal depends on diffusion processes as well as the local concentrations of Ti and Al atoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An original model of closed continuous hyperthermic peritoneal perfusion (CHPP) in mice is presented and was found to support the efficacy of intraperitoneal hyperthermia. Closed CHPP was performed after intraperitoneal inoculation of transplantable colon 26 cells into a mouse. Colon 26 cells (5 × 10 4 ) were injected into 18 mice. The mice were then allocated to six groups of three each and subjected to peritoneal perfusion over time. Peritoneal washings from each mouse were sampled and counted by the cytosmear method. On day 10 after inoculation, colonies of the disseminated tumour were seen on the mesentery by staining with 0.1% methylene blue for 5 min. The number of tumour nodules on the mesentery was counted. The number of washed-out tumour cells decreased the most at 24 h after inoculation, and 76% of the inoculated cells did not wash out during the peritoneal perfusion procedure. CHPP was performed after 24 h when colon 26 cells were injected into the peritoneal cavity because this status may represent micrometastasis. The total number of nodules on the mesentery in the CHPP group was significantly smaller than that in the control ( p <0.02). In conclusion, because this treatment model is similar to the clinical CHPP, the biostaining model might be useful for the evaluation of peritoneal dissemination and it was unique and valuable in demonstrating an effective treatment for the prevention of peritoneal dissemination. Furin, a proprotein-convertase, is distributed in the upper third layer and the lower quarter region of the rat gastric gland. We previously identified the upper furin-positive cells as parietal cells, and here, we identify the lower furin-positive cells as chief cells. Chief cells express three isoforms of transforming growth factor β (TGFβ), whose precursor requires cleavage by furin for its activation. When the chief cell mass was decreased in rats by adrenalectomy, pepsinogen-, furin-, and TGFβ-positive cells were also reduced. Stimulation of mouse chief cell primary-cultures with transforming growth factor a (TGFα) induced an increase in the expression of furin and TGFβ mRNAs and in the formation of mature TGFβ. Since parietal cells are known to express a high level of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) -family growth factors and chief cells strongly express EGF receptors (EGF-R), we suggest that chief cells receive the EGF-R signal from parietal cells in a paracrine fashion and regulate parietal cell mass by controlling the formation of mature TGFβ. Background: Triple therapy is accepted as the treatment of choice for Helicobacter pylori eradication, but there is no consensus on how long the therapy should be maintained in haemodialysis (HD(+)) patients. Our aims in this study were to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the 7-day triple therapy in HD(+) patients. Method: Forty-seven HD(+) and 55 HD(-) patients with dyspepsia underwent endoscopy. The prevalence of H. pylori was detected by Giemsa stain, followed by the urea breath test (UBT). H. pylori (+) patients were scheduled to undergo 7-day triple therapy and the success of eradication was investigated by UBT. Results: Forty-five (44%) patients were positive for H. pylori. Forty of them underwent triple therapy and 39 (98%) patients completed the treatment. Eradication was successful in 32 (82%) and unsuccessful in 7 (18%) patients. There was no significant difference between these groups in age, gender, endoscopic findings or HD, and only previous treatment was significant for eradication failure by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Side effects were observed in 2 (15%) of 13 HD(+) and 3 (11%) of 27 HD(-) patients, and one HD(-) patient had to stop medication because of severe nausea and vomiting. The eradication rate was 93% (28/30) in patients without previous treatment. The triple therapy was unsuccessful in 7 patients, and 4 of them again underwent 7-day triple therapy, but all resulted in failure. Conclusions: Seven-day triple therapy is safe and effective for primary treatment of H. pylori infection in both HD(+) and HD(-) patients, but a new treatment is necessary for patients with previous treatment. The atomic arrangements of short-range order (SRO) in two Al-rich γ-TiAl alloys with 62.5 and 60.0at.%Al respectively have been investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy with image processing. For both alloys, SRO structures are formed in Ti-rich (002) layers of the L1[sub 0] ordered γ-TiAl matrix, in the course of the phase transformation from the Al[sub 5]Ti[sub 3] long-period superstructure phase at lower temperatures to the h-Al[sub 2]Ti phase at higher temperatures. The SRO structures are composed of three types of ordered cluster: Ti[sub 4]Al type (square shaped), Ti[sub 3]Al type (fat rhombus shaped) and Ti[sub 2]Al type (lean rhombus shaped). The ordered clusters form local microdomains of the Al[sub 5]Ti[sub 3]′ and Al[sub 3]Ti[sub 2] superstructures in addition to the Al[sub 5]Ti[sub 3] and h-Al[sub 2]Ti superstructures, by different methods of tiling the ordered clusters. Such ordered clusters or microdomains tend to be in contact with each other through common {310) boundaries. Transparent organic/pre-ceramic composite films of poly(methyl methacrylate) [PMMA] and perhydropolysilazane [PHPS] were synthesized by blending poly(methyl methacrylate-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) [P(MMA-co-HEMA)] random copolymers and PHPS. In the blend films, P(MMA-graft-PHPS) graft copolymers were formed, PMMA and PHPS were microscopically phase-separated in the solid state. Morphology of the microphase separation was investigated by transmission electron microscopy by changing HEMA content of the random copolymers and blend ratio of PHPS to HEMA. To convert PHPS to silica glass, the blend films were calcinated at 100°C. The morphology of the microphase separation of the films was not changed by the calcinations; the calcinated films were transparent. When the molar content of HEMA of P(MMA-co-HEMA) and the molar content of PHPS to HEMA in feed were 14.5% and 150%, respectively, the morphology was well ordered lamellae of PMMA and silica. Objective: To study the clinical features of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) enteritis in our surgical ward. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: Teaching hospital, Japan. Subjects: 16 men and 1 woman who developed MRSA enteritis from January 1995 to October 1999. Main outcome measures: Causes and treatments. Results: The underlying diseases were as follows: gastric cancer (n = 13), colorectal cancer (n = 2), recurrent cancer ( n = 1) and bowel obstruction following gastrectomy (n = 1). 16 patients were operated on. Two cases were treated with histamine H2 receptor blockers. The mean age of patients was 65 years (range 50-80). In 13 cases MRSA enteritis developed within 6 days of operation. 10 strains of MRSA were isolated from stools, 8 from gastric juice, and 3 from intra-abdominal exudate. 10 patients were treated with vancomycin given through a nasogastric tube and 2 through a nasogastric tube and by drip intravenous infusion. 15 patients survived and 2 died. Conclusions: Patients who are given broad-spectrum antibiotics and whose gastric secretion is reduced are at high risk of MRSA enteritis. A series of cyclic triaxial tests on clayey sands was carried out and attempts were made to evaluate the strain dependency of shear modulus and damping. Although the strain dependency of the shear modulus of clayey sands was similar to that of clay in the low strain range, G/G[sub 0] became close to that of clean sand in the high strain range. The damping ratio was less for the clayey sand containing more fines, especially in the medium to large strain range. It was shown that the change in the effective confining stress with loading cycles in the undrained shear test needed to be considered, particularly in the large strain range. The consideration can be made by normalising G with G′[sub 0] instead of using G[sub 0]. When an initial shear stress was applied to the specimen, the amount of residual strain, which was induced with cycles, had to be added to the normal strain amplitude in order to determine the shear modulus. If the effects of excess pore pressure and the amount of residual strain were taken into account properly, it was suggested that the shear modulus of clayey sand in irregular loading could be evaluated reasonably well by using the average G/G′[sub 0]-γ curve obtained by cyclic loading tests on isotropically-consolidated specimens. Objective: To find out if strict assessment of organ function preoperatively predicted morbidity and mortality in patients being operated on for oesophageal carcinoma. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: Teaching hospital, Japan. Subjects: 178 patients operated on for oesophageal cancer 1989–1993. Interventions: Oesophagectomy and reconstruction (using either stomach or colon) in one stage by a right thracoabdominal approach in 173, and transhiatal resection in 5 with either poor pulmonary reserve or early lesions. Main outcome measures: Correlation between preoperative assessment of organ function and postoperative development of complications. Result: 79 patients (44%) developed complications and 6 died (3%). Pulmonary dysfunction preoperatively was significantly associated with the development of all complications (p = 0.001) and of postoperative pulmonary complications (p = 0.04). No other preoperative assessment correlated significantly with the development of postoperative complications.
