This qualitative investigation explored how 18 chronically homeless adults with serious mental illness residing in emergency and temporary supportive housing facilities in Glasgow, Scotland, and New York City conceptualized personal recovery. Thirty-six interviews were conducted and analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. The analysis produced four superordinate themes revealing how participants engaged with, envisioned, or disidentified with, the recovery idea, in the context of chronic life adversity, co-occurring conditions, a precarious present and an uncertain future. Health and social care providers should be responsive to clients' diverse ideas about recovery and facilitate their exploration of authentic pathways to a "good life." [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experiences of psychosis may increase isolation and stigma, increasing negative perceptions of oneself. Social networks can be a source of support and strain in dealing with these difficulties. This research explored how individuals with experiences of psychosis make sense of their social relationships. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis guided the design and conduct of semi-structured interviews with seven Scottish mental health service-users with lived experience of psychosis, exploring positive and negative aspects of relationships and how they influenced personal recovery. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and coded for subordinate and superordinate themes. The superordinate theme "She is more about my illness than me" highlighted normalisation of participants' illness identity through family and support staff dominating social networks; their primary orientation being towards illness management. Subordinate themes; "without the service I wouldn't know what to do", "They wouldn't talk, they will sort of control me in a way" and "She doesn't see me as normal either with me getting help" evidenced benefits and tensions associated with these relationships. The composition and nature of social networks can prevent individuals with experiences of psychosis from exploring identities unrelated to illness. Further research must identify ways to empower individuals and promote connectedness independently from illness management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding Christian clergy's role in providing counseling and spiritual support to Black and minority ethnic (BME) groups offers promise for redressing the ethnicity-related health inequalities in mental health help-seeking and service utilization in the United Kingdom. This qualitative study (N = 10) investigated the pastoral practices, mental health literacy, and referral tendencies of Christian clergy serving BME congregants in Glasgow, Scotland. The qualitative content analysis revealed that the clergy held multiple and complex explanatory models of socioemotional problems, and espoused referrals to healthcare professionals to varying degrees. Clergy–practitioner collaborations can potentially become a crucial enabler of culturally sensitive and person-centered care, although several barriers persist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Student dissatisfaction with assessment and feedback is a significant challenge for most UK Higher Education Institutions according to a key national survey. This paper explores the meaning, challenges and potential opportunities for enhancement in assessment and feedback within the authors' own institution as illustrative of approaches that can be taken elsewhere. Using a qualitative design, a review of assessment and feedback, which included an exploration of students' perceptions, was made in one College of the University. The findings highlighted variations in assessment and feedback practice across the College with dissatisfaction typically being due to misunderstanding or miscommunication between staff and students. Drawing on the review, we assert in this paper that students' dissatisfaction with assessment and feedback is not a 'tame' problem for which a straightforward solution exists. Instead, it is a 'wicked' problem that requires a complex approach with multiple interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
