As a preliminary gesture anticipating the ceremonials of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the founding of the American Institute of Planners, this paper reviews some of the historical forces, events, and personalities preceding that moment of organizational identification of the profession. The city's form is composed of the obvious elements of solids and voids, with sometimes an added ingredient to give it a unique and local flavor. In St. Louis this additive is her private residential streets and especially the late nineteenth-century gates that define them. They represent not only the prestige ambitions of the residents behind them but also an effort to maintain through time a quality residential environment in an urban setting typically beset with change.
