Dietary nitrate may improve exercise tolerance in some healthy and clinical populations. Existing data regarding dietary nitrate in COPD is inconsistent. We conducted a 14d double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, crossover trial of daily nitrate-rich beetroot juice (BRJ; 12.9 mmol) versus nitrate-depleted BRJ (PL; 0.5 mmol). At baseline and after each condition, we assessed functional capacity (incremental shuttle walk test; ISWT), ambulatory blood pressure, pulmonary function, quality of life as well as exhaled nitric oxide (eNO), and plasma nitrate/nitrite (NOx). Eight subjects with COPD completed the trial. BRJ supplementation was associated with significantly increased NOx (p < .05) and a 14.6% increase in ISWT distance (+56 m, p = .00004) as well as a trend towards increased eNO compared to PL. There was no other differences. Dietary nitrate appears to have ergogenic effect in subjects with mild-moderate COPD. Building on research about the nature of public service motivation (PSM) and its application outside the public sector, the authors provide a qualitative-based examination of PSM’s relevance to voluntary sector employees. In doing so, they explore how far their motivations extend beyond those encompassed within current conceptualizations of PSM and whether PSM research can be enriched through the adoption of qualitative methodologies. The findings suggest that PSM accounts for some, but not all, of the motives of voluntary sector employees and indicate that public sector managers involved in outsourcing public services need to be sensitive to their distinctive features. This article presents an innovative approach to establish the quality and credibility of Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) such that it can be considered in Land Administration Systems (LAS) on a Fit for Purpose (FFP) basis. A participatory land information system can provide affordable and timely FFP information about land and its resources. However, the establishment of such a system involves more than just technical solutions and administrative procedures: many social, economic and political aspects must be considered. Innovative approaches like VGI can help address the lack of accurate, reliable and FFP land information for LAS, but integration of such sources relies on the quality and credibility of VGI. Verifying volunteer efforts can be difficult without reference to ground truth: a novel Trust and Reputation Modelling methodology is proposed as a suitable technique to effect such VGI data set validation. This method has been applied to successfully demonstrate that VGI can produce accurate and reliable data sets which can be used to conduct regular systematic updates of geographic information in official systems. This study investigates the effects of temperature on the survival, food intake, oxygen consumption and growth during long-term live holding of captive male snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) (average = 0.7 kg). The crabs were held at three different temperatures, 3, 6 and 9°C. The trials were done using groups of snow crabs held in nine land-based holding tanks (three replicates per temperature treatment). The results showed that temperature had a significant effect on survival. The survival rate at 3°C (61%) was significantly higher than at 6°C (33%) and at 9°C (28%). Specific oxygen consumption rates of unfed crab at 6°C were significantly higher than at 9°C and 3°C. In summary, the current study shows that the Barents Sea snow crab have a narrow temperature range in which they thrive compared with the Barents Sea red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus). Barents Sea snow crab has similar metabolic and physiological attributes to other major snow crab populations. In conditions when ambient temperatures are approximately 6°C, it may prove beneficial for animal welfare and also be financially advantageous to reduce ambient water temperatures in live snow crab holding facilities on boat or on land. The 2012 London Olympics was a technological and marketing watershed event in the history of live sport mega events. A case study of the 2012 London Olympics was used to demonstrate how effective management of innovations in (a) collaborative information and communication technology (ICT) and (b) social media marketing (SMM) ushered in a new platform template for live sport events worldwide. A review of the literature revealed four primary factors responsible: (1) the foresight, planning, due diligence, and management effectiveness of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and their technology partners; (2) the confluence of dramatically increased mobile device use and social media engagement by prosumers; (3) the willingness of sponsors, marketers, and global media enterprises to take risks with innovative media and SMM strategies; and (4) the enthusiasm and passion for sport of prosumers worldwide. One hundred percent renewable energy systems have the potential to mitigate climate change, but large fluctuations in energy supply and demand make ensuring reliability a key challenge. A hypothetical future energy system developed for the UK features reduced total energy demand, increased electrification and 100% renewable and carbon-neutral energy sources. Hourly modelling of this system over a 10-year period shows that even in an integrated energy system there will be significant electricity surpluses and shortfalls. Flexible demand and conventional electricity and heat stores reduced the extremes but could not provide the capacity required. Carbon-neutral synthetic gaseous fuel could provide a flexible and quickly dispatchable back up system, with large storage and generation capacities comparable with those in the UK today. This study explores substance use, psychosocial problems, and the relationships to educational status in 193 adolescents (school dropouts, 63; alternative education, 46; mainstream students, 84) who attended a substance abuse treatment facility in Dublin, Ireland, within a 42-month period. For each adolescent, data on demographics, family background, substance use, psychiatric history, and offending behaviors were collected. The study found that the 3 groups exhibited statistically significant differences in their substance use problems, with the school dropouts displaying significantly more problems. The need for early detection and intervention of at-risk students, and collaborative interagency work aimed at addressing substance use, cannot be overemphasized as strategies to ultimately prevent school dropout. Little information exists on the levels of psychiatric disorders among substance abusing adolescents in Ireland. The aim of the study is examine the pattern of psychiatric disorders and explore for gender differences among adolescents with a substance use disorder (SUD) in Ireland. A cross-sectional descriptive study and retrospective review of medical records on the 144 most recent admissions at the Youth Drug and Alcohol (YoDA) service, Dublin was carried out. Overall, 48% of the patients had a lifetime history of psychiatric disorders. Deliberate self-harm (DSH) was the most common condition (27.1%), followed by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (20.8%) and depression (10.4%). Conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder were infrequently diagnosed. Compared with boys, the girls were more likely to have a lifetime history of psychiatric disorders (odds ratio 3.7;p = 0.005). These findings provide the first prevalence data on psychiatric disorders in a clinically representative sample of Irish adolescents with SUDs. Adolescent addiction services should have the skills to assess and manage co-occurring mental health problems. There is a need for further studies to examine DSH among adolescents with SUDs. The geospatial sensor web is set to revolutionise real-time geospatial applications by making up-to-date spatially and temporally referenced data relating to real-world phenomena ubiquitously available. The uptake of sensor web technologies is largely being driven by the recent introduction of the OpenGIS Sensor Web Enablement framework, a standardisation initiative that defines a set of web service interfaces and encodings to task and query geospatial sensors in near real time. However, live geospatial sensors are capable of producing vast quantities of data over a short time period, which presents a large, fluctuating and ongoing processing requirement that is difficult to adequately provide with the necessary computational resources. Grid computing appears to offer a promising solution to this problem but its usage thus far has primarily been restricted to processing static as opposed to real-time data sets. A new approach is presented in this work whereby geospatial data streams are processed on grid computing resources. This is achieved by submitting ongoing processing jobs to the grid that continually poll sensor data repositories using relevant OpenGIS standards. To evaluate this approach a road-traffic monitoring application was developed to process streams of GPS observations from a fleet of vehicles. Specifically, a Bayesian map-matching algorithm is performed that matches each GPS observation to a link on the road network. The results show that over 90% of observations were matched correctly and that the adopted approach is capable of achieving timely results for a linear time geoprocessing operation performed every 60 seconds. However, testing in a production grid environment highlighted some scalability and efficiency problems. Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) data services were found to present an IO bottleneck and the adopted job submission method was found to be inefficient. Consequently, a number of recommendations are made regarding the grid job-scheduling mechanism, shortcomings in the OGC Web Processing Service specification and IO bottlenecks in OGC data services. To improve the understanding of local and regional effects of climate change, the UK government supported the development of new climate projections. The Met Office Hadley Centre produced a sophisticated set of probabilistic projections for future climate. This paper discusses the design and implementation of an interactive website to deliver those projections to a broad user community. The interface presents complex data sets, generates on-the-fly products and schedules jobs to an offline weather generator capable of outputting gigabytes of data in response to a single request. This study examines mental health symptoms in a cohort of adolescents with substance use disorder (SUD), and attempts to determine if mental health symptoms differed by gender. We retrospectively looked at the Beck's Youth Inventory Second Edition (BYI-II) scores of 88 clients attending a community drug and alcohol treatment service in Dublin, Ireland that were completed at intake as part of their assessment. The raw and T-scores of the male patients were compared against their female counterparts and both against their age- and gender-matched normative population. Participants were 65 boys and 23 girls with a mean age of 16.2 years. Polysubstance use was the norm. As a group, the girls had higher T scores than the boys in all the domains of the BYI-II, and these were statistically significant. Sixty (68%) of the participants had a psychological problem which was moderate or severe in at least one of the five domains. This study found that SUD girls differ from their male counterparts in having both more internalizing and externalizing psychiatric problems. We also note that comorbid psychological problems are not universal. Thus we should avoid a "one size fits all" approach to treatment such as delivering universal self-esteem enhancement interventions to all adolescents with SUD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The manner in which different societies and cultures utilise the natural environment for various activities can be myriad and complex to analyse. Whilst experience and the use of accepted methodologies have taught practitioners how to handle many of the issues and controversies linked to the sustainability impacts of proposed initiatives, many of these impacts are more controversial in nature. Systems thinking, based on fuzzy concepts, can provide some initial answers to the question of how to improve communication between heterogeneous groups of stakeholders because it demonstrates a greater respect for the knowledge of communities affected by various regeneration initiatives. Using the 2004 Olympics as a case study, the authors report on the potential applications of fuzzy cognitive mapping as a participatory approach for collecting, analysing and representing information from multiple stakeholders. Because clinicians require objectively demonstrable neurological deficits to confirm a diagnosis, the recognition of embolic events in the nervous system is generally restricted to the effects of ischemic necrosis produced by arterial occlusion. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has shown that lesser degrees of damage associated with small emboli are common, especially in the mid brain, and are usually clinically silent. They are frequently associated with atheromatous embolism in the elderly, but microembolic debris, such as fat, is common in the systemic venous return of healthy people and generally trapped in the microcirculation of the lung being removed by phagocytosis. However, pulmonary filtration may fail and microemboli may also pass through an atrial septal defect in so-called 'paradoxical' embolism. Studies of bubbles formed on decompression in diving have demonstrated the importance of pulmonary filtration in the protection of the nervous system and that filtration is size dependant, as small bubbles may escape entrapment. Fluid and even small solid emboli, arresting in or passing through the cerebral circulation, do not cause infarction, but disturb the blood–brain barrier inducing what has been termed the 'perivenous syndrome'. The nutrition of areas of the white matter of both the cerebral medulla and the spinal cord depends on long draining veins which have been shown to have surrounding capillary free zones. Because of the high oxygen extraction in the microcirculation of the gray matter of the central nervous system, the venous blood has low oxygen content. When this is reduced further by embolic events, tissue oxygenation may fall to critically low levels, leading to blood–brain barrier dysfunction, inflammation, demyelination and eventually, axonal damage. These are the hallmarks of the early lesions of multiple sclerosis where MR spectroscopy has also shown the presence of lactic acid. Significant elevation of the venous oxygen tension requires oxygen to be provided under hyperbaric conditions. Arterial tension is typically increased ten-fold breathing oxygen at 2 atmospheres absolute (ATA), but this results in only a 1.5-fold increase in the cerebral venous oxygen tension. The treatment of decompression sickness, and both animal and clinical studies, have confirmed the value of oxygen provided under hyperbaric conditions in the restoration and preservation of neurological function in the 'perivenous' syndrome. The present study determined if acute exercise increased free radical formation in human skeletal muscle. Vastus lateralis biopsies were obtained in a randomized balanced order from six males at rest and following single-leg knee extensor exercise performed for 2 min at 50% of maximal work rate (WRMAX) and 3 min at 100% WRMAX. EPR spectroscopy revealed an exercise-induced increase in mitochondrial ubisemiquinone [image omitted]  [0.167 ± 0.055 vs. rest: 0.106 ± 0.047 arbitrary units (AU)/g total protein (TP), P < 0.05] and α-phenyl-tert-butylnitrone-adducts (112 ± 41 vs. rest: 29 ± 9 AU/mg tissue mass, P < 0.05). Intramuscular lipid hydroperoxides also increased (0.320 ± 0.263 vs. rest: 0.148 ± 0.071 nmol/mg TP, P < 0.05) despite an uptake of α-tocopherol, α-carotene and β-carotene. There were no relationships between mitochondrial volume density and any biomarkers of oxidative stress. These findings provide the first direct evidence for intramuscular free radical accumulation and lipid peroxidation following acute exercise in humans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ever‐increasing number of spatial data sets accessible through spatial data clearinghouses continues to make geographic information retrieval and spatial data discovery major challenges. Such challenges have been addressed in the discipline of Information Retrieval through ranking of data according to inferred degrees of relevance. Spatial data, however, present an additional challenge as they are characteristically made up of geometry, attribute and, optionally, temporal components. As these components are mutually independent of one another, this paper suggests that they be ranked independently of one another. The representation of the results of the independent ranking of these three components of spatial data suggests that representation of the results of the ranking process requires an alternative approach to currently used textual ranked lists: visualisation of relevance in a three‐dimensional visualisation environment. This article aims to contribute to our understanding of the varied responses of small and micro enterprises to regulation and their implications for regulatory policy, using statutory occupational health and safety requirements as an example. Particular emphasis is given to the relevance of an understanding of business responses to regulation that is informed by a wider range of evidence and perspectives than that which has tended to dominate recent policy developments around regulation. Evidence is presented on small firms’ awareness of, and attitudes towards, the health and safety legislation and their responses to the enforcement activities of health and safety inspectors. A framework for understanding owner-manager attitudes and organisational stances towards health and safety regulation and enforcement is advanced which emphasises their varying characteristics and motivational bases, including a regard for the different contexts in which firms operate. The framework supports the view that most small firms have a reactive stance towards regulation, but also that attitudes and motivations can range from overt avoidance to more positive and even proactive stances. This understanding points to the need for a multidimensional approach towards encouraging compliance that accords a central role to direct contact and enforcement in stimulating improvement in practices. The perspective developed is related to the debate around the role of regulation in general in shaping the performance and development of enterprises, particularly with respect to the potential wider economic role that can be played by well-implemented regulation and associated mechanisms of support. This paper draws on the findings of two case studies to examine how two French multinationals used expatriates and training and development to introduce and support a process of cultural reform in companies that they had acquired under the Jordanian government's privatization programme. It notes that in both cases these mechanisms of cultural change had been extensively employed and that the overall purpose of the organizational reforms they were intended to support exhibited many similarities. For example, in each of the companies a central aim of the reforms being introduced was to make the acquired organizations more business- and target-orientated and, to this end, incorporated initiatives to improve appraisal and selection procedures, establish closer links between pay and performance and introduce more devolved and decentralized management structures. In addition, expatriates were being widely used to develop and implement desired reforms and training and development was being actively used to engender supportive attitudinal changes. More generally, it was noticeable that neither of the multinationals adopted a markedly different approach to the management of their Jordanian operations, notwithstanding that they were based in a developing country and were either only partially owned or operated under a management contract. At the same time, marked variations existed in terms of the extent to which these reforms were centrally determined and hence authored, variations that, in part, appeared to stem from product market differences. The authors consequently warn against assuming too close an association between the human resource strategies of multinationals and the national business systems in which they are based. Workforce absence rates in Britain have been found to be higher in the public sector than the private. The Government has set ambitious targets for the reduction of public sector absence rates and published a range of recommendations. The authors look at the ways the two sectors manage long-term absence. Although many public sector organizations, as well as some large private services ones, have systems in place, this article shows that these often contain structural weaknesses, and frequently do not operate in an integrated way. The Utilities Act 2000 is principally focused upon promoting greater competition within the electricity industry. Its provisions will have a profound, but possibly unintended, impact upon the structure of the electricity industry in the UK, and ensure the continued requirement for a regulatory presence in both the competitive as well as monopoly sectors of the industry. The question of business separation, and its impact upon the potential for vertical integration is discussed. A period of circa 12 months' work experience, as part of an Environmental Science Bachelor's Degree programme, introduces candidates to a variety of problems and can, therefore, be expected to influence the problem-solving approach adopted by the students. An index of deep learning, based on data collected from a modified version of the ASSIST questionnaire, indicated that students maintained their level of deep learning throughout the 4 years of a thick sandwich undergraduate environmental science degree programme. However, data from interviews with students indicated their experience of environment-orientated work placement had led them towards adopting a deeper approach to learning. The apparent contradiction in data may be explained by the type of problem to be solved. It is likely that students retain a surface approach to solving technical, scientific problems whilst adopting a deeper approach to, for example, personnel and resource problems. The takeovers that have occurred within the Regional Electricity Companies (RECs) since the privatization of the UK electricity industry are reviewed. The article describes the nature and scale of the changes that have occurred, and the policy considerations that have influenced the behaviour of the companies. A variety of emergent behaviour patterns among the companies are identified, which reflect apparent differences in the RECs' policy objectives; the mergers are then grouped on the basis of this behaviour There is strong evidence of a learning process among the companies. The article offers information about the evaluation of art education programs made by the Illinois Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in Illinois in the 1972-1973 school year. The evaluation was conducted to 102 elementary schools, 84 junior high/middle educational institutions and 56 senior high schools. It is stated that the evaluation was made to assess the improvement of each school district across the state. Results revealed that successful art programs often rely on the teaching style of art educators. However, the evaluation found that teaching materials for art appreciation are not widely available.
