Rice is most susceptible to heat and drought stress at flowering stage, but flowering characteristics under drought stress are not well characterized. This study investigated flowering characteristics of rice genotypes contrasting in their flower opening time (FOT) and level of drought tolerance. Near-isogenic lines for the early-morning flowering trait (IR64+ qEMF3) and for drought tolerance (IR87707-445-B-B-B), and their recurrent parent cultivar (IR64) were used. IR64+ qEMF3 had stable earlier FOT than IR64 and IR87707-445-B-B-B under drought stress conditions. Drought stress occasionally affects FOT depending on genotype. The number of open spikelets was higher in IR87707-445-B-B-B than in IR64 and IR64+ qEMF3, and the difference among genotypes increased as the rice plants were subjected to more severe stress levels. Panicle temperature increased under drought stress conditions and was similar among genotypes when it was measured at the same time of day, demonstrating that earlier FOT in IR64+ qEMF3 must be beneficial to avoid heat stress at flowering under drought stress conditions. However, IR64+ qEMF3 did not exhibit drought avoidance, as evidenced by the root mass at depth. To assess the potential for the EMF trait to complement ongoing drought breeding efforts, heat tolerance among 13 advanced drought breeding lines and released cultivars was tested. Wide variation in heat tolerance at flowering was observed and, notably, none of the 13 lines possessed the EMF trait. This study therefore proposes that a breeding strategy that transfers the EMF trait into drought tolerant lines could enhance the resilience of rice spikelets to the combined stresses of heat and drought at flowering. Enhancing crop traits that increase grain yield under elevated CO2 concentrations is an important option for increasing the future productivity of rice. Here, we compared the growth and yield of five varieties with different genetic background under Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) conditions to identify traits responsible for varietal differences in yield increase under elevated CO2. Three high-yielding and two standard rice varieties grown under FACE conditions commonly had (1) shorter growth periods, (2) higher dry matter production, (3) higher numbers of spikelets (sink capacity) and panicles; and (4) higher yield than those grown under ambient CO2. Yield enhancement by elevated CO2 (FACE/Ambient), however, differed significantly among varieties, ranging from 1.10 to 1.25. The greater response of the sink capacity, defined as the product of spikelet number and single grain mass, was the main factor involved in yield increase. Three high-yielding varieties (Momiroman, Takanari, and Hokuriku 193) had greater sink capacity than two standard varieties and the sink capacity of these varieties significantly increased under FACE condition. However, yield enhancement in elevated CO2 was lower in Hokuriku 193 than in Momiroman and Takanari. In Hokuriku 193, sink production was relatively low while dry matter production was similar to the others. Therefore, larger increase in sink production efficiency per unit of dry matter production under FACE was found to be a particularly important varietal trait, suggesting that efforts to develop varieties suited to the predicted elevated CO2 condition should focus on this and the related traits. Temperatures and solar radiation during ripening critically affect grain appearance in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Climatic factors to induce chalky grains were analyzed under the experimental conditions of high-temperature and shading treatment and also under the ambient condition in a high-temperature-prone region of Japan. The frequency of white-back (WB) and basal-white (BW) grains correlated with temperature and solar radiation, whereas that of milky-white (MW) grains was not correlated, suggesting that complicated climatic factors are involved in the formation of MW grains. Further investigation was carried out to identify the parameters that distinguish perfect and MW grains grown in high-temperature versus those grown in low-solar-radiation conditions. As reported previously, the chalk phenotypes in the transverse section of the MW grains were quite different between environments: oval-shaped chalk for MW grains grown in low-solar-radiation condition and center chalk for MW grains grown in high-temperature condition. Grain hardness and amylopectin chain-length distribution did not explain the difference in MW grains between environments. MW grains subjected to high temperatures had a lower protein content without a consistent reduction in the single-grain weight, whereas those from the low-solar-radiation condition had a lower amylose content with a consistent reduction in the single-grain weight, when compared with perfect grains that developed in either environmental condition. Overall, our results suggest that MW grains are formed through different physiological mechanisms with altered starch and protein synthesis under high-temperature and low-solar-radiation conditions. The newly developed rice variety 'Akidawara' (AKI) combines the traits of high yield and highly palatability, and its cultivation is expected to spread. We examined characteristics of growth and quality, and factors contributing to high yield in AKI by comparing with 'Nipponbare' (NIP). Grain yield for AKI were 703 g m-2 (9% more than NIP) and 781 g m-2 (14% more than NIP) under the standard and heavy fertilizer regimes. It was also suggested that increase in the sink capacity was the key contributors to the high yield in AKI resulting from a conspicuous increase in the number of spikelets, which is likely due to introgression of the high-yielding variety allele. Furthermore, AKI achieved the similar degree of sink filling in spite of its larger sink capacity. In this point, panicle dry weight increase during ripening (ΔP) was significantly higher for AKI than for NIP despite the fact that no differences in shoot dry weight increase were observed between varieties. The greater ΔP in AKI might be derived from its larger sink capacity and the difference between varieties involves the translocation of nonstructural carbohydrate. In the grain quality, the reduction in perfect grain ratio was negligible and regarded as a small trade-off for AKI's 14% increase in yield, and grain protein content increased to a lesser degree in AKI at the same yield level. Global warming is predicted to aggravate the risk of unstable crop production. It is of great concern that damage to rice spikelet sterility and grain quality will increase, resulting in yield and economic losses. To secure the global food supply and farmers’ income, the development of rice cultivars with heat resilience is a pressing concern. Regarding spikelet sterility, rice cultivars with heat tolerance at different growth stages have been identified in recent years. The early-morning flowering (EMF) trait is effective in heat escape because it shifts the time of day of flowering to earlier in the morning when it is cooler. Although varietal differences are very small, there are some genetic resources for EMF in wild rice accessions. Regarding heat-induced grain chalkiness, heat-tolerantjaponicacultivars for mitigating white-back type of chalky grains (WBCG) were found. Quantitative trait loci for heat tolerance at flowering, EMF, and for WBCG in grain quality have been mapped on the rice chromosomes. Further genetic efforts have been successfully connected to the development of near-isogenic lines for each trait with tagged molecular markers. These breeding materials are quite unique and useful in facilitating marker-assisted breeding toward the development of heat-resilient rice in terms of spikelet sterility and grain quality.
