Part 2 builds upon Part 1, introducing technology tools and applications of these foundational concepts by exploring the various levels (from beginner to advanced) of utilisation, while describing how their usage can transform Health Professions Education. This Part covers Learning Management Systems, infographics, podcasting, videos, websites, social media, online discussion forums, simulation, virtual patients, extended and virtual reality. Intertwined are other topics, such as online small group teaching, game-based learning, FOAM, online social and collaboration learning, and virtual care teaching. We end by discussing digital scholarship and emerging technologies. Visual misinformation poses unique challenges to public health due to its potential for persuasiveness and rapid spread on social media. In this article, librarians at the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Library System identify four types of visual health misinformation: misleading graphs and charts, out of context visuals, image manipulation in scientific publications, and AI-generated images and videos. To educate our campus's health sciences audience and wider community on these topics, we have developed a range of instruction about visual health misinformation. Navigation is a joint operation between humans and technology. Navigating high-speed craft (HSC) is a more critical and risky task than other types of ship navigation due to high speed and time limitations. Situational awareness (SA) is the understanding of what is going on around the navigators. HSC navigator who has an insufficient level of SA may lead to wrong decisions and even accidents. In this study, an analysis of Turkish HSC navigators' SA levels has been carried out in their working environment. Situational Awareness Rating Technique (SART) and pairwise comparison of the effects of Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA), Automatic Identification System (AIS) and autopilot on SA questionnaires were applied. According to SA, navigation operations, factors that mostly affect SA and suggestions that would increase SA were sorted in accordance with the navigators' perceptions. The results show that the level of HSC navigators' SA is high and sufficient. Finally, considerations are introduced to keep acceptable levels or increase SA on HSCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Healthcare providers often encounter clinical trial results in the form of visual data displays. Although there is a robust literature on patient responses to data displays in medical settings, less is known about how providers comprehend and apply this information. Our study provides a scoping review of the literature on providers' reactions to and perceptions of data displays. We searched article databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, the Cochrane Library) supplemented by handsearching. Eligible articles were published in English from 1990 to 2020. We identified 15 articles meeting our criteria. Studies with physicians were more prevalent (13/15) than those with other healthcare providers (6/15). Commonly assessed outcomes included objective (10/15) and subjective comprehension (4/15), preference for certain data display formats (6/15), and hypothetical decision-making around prescribing (4/15). In studies that assessed comprehension of clinical trial concepts, scores were average or below what would be considered mastery of the information. Data display formats that were preferred did not always correlate with better comprehension of information; lesser preferred formats (e.g. icon array) often resulted in better comprehension. Our findings suggest that healthcare providers may not accurately interpret complex types of data displays, and it is unknown if such limitations affect actual decision-making. Maritime safety is important for all stakeholders. On the other hand, maritime accidents occur despite rapid advances in technology. One of the most important aspects necessary to realise safety at sea is the safety of navigation. Navigating high-speed craft (HSC) is a more challenging and risky task than other types of ship navigation. A HSC navigator with insufficient safety culture (SC) may lead to wrong decisions in challenging physiological and psychological conditions. In this study, an analysis of HSC navigators' SC in terms of bridge operations has been carried out. Nordic Occupational Safety Climate Questionnaire (NOSACQ-50) and pairwise comparison of the effects of Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA), Automatic Identification System (AIS) and autopilot on SC have been applied to 38 Turkish HSC navigators. Navigation operations according to SC, factors that mostly influence SC and suggestions that will improve SC have been identified and discussed in accordance with navigators' perceptions. Before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the College's Hirons Library & Learning Center (HLLC) library marketing efforts included word of mouth, information literacy instruction session, physical and electronic displays, and announcement on the library webpage to library users. In March 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the HLLC, in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Research & Training (OIRT), designed two new library marketing campaigns using the project management app, Notion. Both campaigns were designed to meet the new and changing needs of our new, predominately remote, users. In the first library marketing campaign, the HLLC's marketing goal was very focused and deliberate in purpose. The library emailed the College community messages to increase awareness and usage of the library's eBook collections. In the second library marketing campaign, the library broadened the purpose of the marketing campaigned to promote online resources, tools, and virtual programs. The library sent text messages to the students. In this edition of the column, we describe how our marketing efforts have changed due to the pandemic, including which strategies we employed, and the extent to which we recognized success with these new efforts. Liquid crystals have numerous applications in various fields ranging from drug delivery, gene therapy in biosciences to electronic display and sensors in the field of opt-electronics and material science. In recent years, the properties of liquid crystals have been tailored by truncating the terminal atom(s) or group of atoms and/or by doping different types of nanomaterials; such as nanodots, nanorods, nanotubes, nanoplatelets, etc. Controlled assembly of nanoparticles in liquid crystal media can provide an alternative method to tailor new and desired opto-electronic properties in uniquely arranged quantum dots. This self-assembly of nanoparticles produces new hybrid (composite) materials having large number of applications. Here, we review different applications of nanoparticles and liquid crystal systems and highlight different approaches for achieving the hierarchical arrangement of nanoparticles in liquid crystal media. Here, phenomena like quantum dot self-assembly, formation of hollow microstructures, memory effect, and formation of microcapsules, etc. in presence of liquid crystal media are revisited and discussed critically. Band-gap-tailoring has emerged as a major thrust area because of numerous applications in making opto-electronic devices. Band-gap of liquid crystals can be also be tailored either by doping (metal) atoms or by nucleating their nano-clusters after removing their terminal groups. This phenomenon creates a lot of attraction among scientists. Hierarchical arrangement of nano-dots in liquid crystal media has gained a lot of interest, as they can possess special functional properties; many of which are known whereas many others need to be discovered. Hierarchical arrangement of nano-clusters can be obtained either by doping atoms into liquid crystals followed by a nucleation process or by forming molecular architectures by weak coupling between quantum dots because of van der Waal forces. Functional properties such as magnetic, physiochemical, and opto-electronic properties of the hybrid systems are different from their constituent parts, and thus the hybrid systems can find a vital role in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The purpose of this article is to provide a brief overview of the history of projection in education, discuss potential benefits to using projection technology, and finally share ideas for the use of projection throughout typical lesson content (e.g., introductory, skill, fitness and game activities) for Physical Education programs. This is also done to promote new perceptions regarding an educational technology that otherwise might be perceived as not applicable in Physical Education contexts; and share the potential positive outcomes from use. Regarding the constantly increasing cooling demands in the building sector due to climate change effects, strategies for reducing the cooling demands are vital. Among the major strategies is thermal insulation, however, overheating phenomenon during the summer months is a frequent problem in over-insulated buildings. In this study, a typical dwelling was examined in ten Mediterranean regions concerning the influence of the envelope's thermal transmittance on its cooling performance. A passive dynamic insulation system was also developed and implemented, while its cooling performance was optimized through a rule-based control strategy for the cooling period of each region. Regarding always the occupants' thermal comfort perception, increased cooling loads were recorded for most of the regions with the highly insulated envelope, which reached up to 12% for the city of Damascus, while in the hot-desert regions the picture is reversed. The dynamic insulation system displayed great potential, as its efficiency was maximum with the super-insulated envelope, resulting in up to 61% less cooling demands for the city of Seville. Finally, by disregarding the occupants' interference in the cooling system, as most of the national legislations do, higher cooling needs are calculated, that in our study reached up to 49% for the super-insulated envelope. Tactile, motor and cognitive capacities decline with age, but little is known about how this relates to braille reading outcomes. This study investigated correlates of braille reading speed among working-age and older adults. Texts were read in two modes (oral/silent) and two media (paper/electronic braille display) by 46 blind adults (age range 23–88) who learned braille between the ages of 4 and 63. Participants completed demographic questionnaires and tests of tactile acuity, fine-motor dexterity and working-memory. A relationship between decreased performance in tactile sensitivity and increased age was observed, but no relationship between increased age and braille reading speed was found. Active tactile acuity, reading frequency and braille learning age were significantly correlated with braille reading speed. No significant difference based on medium was observed, though silent reading was significantly faster than reading aloud. Findings underscore the importance of providing opportunities for older braille learners to secure training and to have frequent opportunities to practice braille between sessions. Findings also challenge the suggestion that increased age alone will impede braille learning. Modern navigation heavily relies on technology. A modern ship's bridge is a high-tech centre with various equipment, such as Radar/ARPA, Automatic Identification System (AIS), Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), satellite communications, and so on. The ability to operate various maritime technologies is among the most important part of navigation officers' knowhow. However, as any technology can be an error, there will be failure happen on maritime technologies, such as navigational sensors and computer-based bridge systems. As an unsafe behaviour, over-reliance on technologies in watch keeping may have disastrous consequences. This article analysed the relationship between safe navigation of a ship and an increasing reliance placed on technology by master and officers. It identified at which stage a reliance on technology becomes an over-reliance, and the major causes of this, such as insufficient training and fatigue. Finally, it examines the consequences of an over-reliance on technology and makes some proposals on how these consequences can be prevented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Data and visualizations are an important part of local health news. Systematic data sourced from credible sources provide context to stories and educate audiences. Data visualizations help simplify complex statistical information and increase audience interactivity. Journalists associate statistics with objectivity, and use them to quantify risk in crisis situations. This study explores how local news used data to cover the coronavirus pandemic. We examined 170 data-driven articles published in the Dallas Morning News and the Houston Chronicle to examine the predominant data sources, data-driven narratives, and use of interactive elements. Results indicate reliance on government sources, prevalence of hard news stories, localization of statistics, contextual presentation of data, and abundant use of visualizations. However, the coverage lacked human-interest stories, interactivity in infographics, and failed to adequately reflect the diversity of the communities covered by the two newspapers. Data-driven stories did not always provide access to the underlying databases; nor did they always explain the methodology used to gather and analyze the data. While the readable format of the articles and the updates on infection rates can inform audiences, we argue that coverage that ignores broader data trends can cause readers to feel negative, which can push them toward news avoidance. The current study examines how interactive data visualization can augment the persuasive potential of health information. In an experiment using an obesity-awareness website (N = 248), we manipulated the level of interactivity in a data visualization tool that featured obesity prevalence in the U.S. and measured participants' absorption into the website, perceived issue severity, content perceptions, and intentions to prevent/treat obesity. Our data demonstrated that lower BMI participants reported greater cognitive absorption when highly interactive data visualization was available on the website. Subsequently, greater cognitive absorption into the website led to higher perceived issue severity, greater content perceptions, and higher obesity prevention intentions among lower BMI participants but not among higher BMI participants. This study evaluated the effectiveness of an embedded naturalistic intervention for teaching augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) application responses to three preschool-aged males with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Parents were taught to embed opportunities for their child to communicate with a grid-based AAC application during every-day routines such as play or mealtime. Communication targets included requesting objects using two-step taxonomic navigational responses, and requesting assistance, rejecting items, or making social comments/responses using a two-step message-strip response. During intervention, parents used strategies such as time delay, prompting, reinforcement, and device proximity (faded over time) to encourage target responses. Display formats and intervention targets were selected in consideration of prior dynamic assessment results. Effects of intervention were evaluated using a multiple probe across participants design. For functional navigational AAC item requesting, all three participants showed an immediate increase in responding that maintained at high levels. Functional AAC responding for other communicative purposes also increased, but at a more gradual pace. All three participants showed generalized responding when new items were added to displays, and when display pages with a larger array of folders and vocabulary items were introduced. End-user development (EUD) seeks to facilitate the extension and customisation of systems during use, with increasing possibilities as the Internet-of-Things (IoT) computing paradigm becomes widespread and expands into realms such as the smart home. This exploratory research study explores two popular physical computing platforms, oriented towards novice makers, that allow end-user developers to create and deploy an IoT smart home sensor device, as well as visualise the resulting data in the cloud. The end users' experiences are evaluated against known EUD design principles, finding that the platforms in their current state are only partially able to meet two of the principles. Such end-to-end IoT prototyping platforms are a relatively recent offering of these maker-focused organisations and, despite some issues in their current state, they offer the potential to increase the ability of end-users to prototype across the complex layers of an IoT system. Future possibilities around the data visualisation layer and for integration with visual programming work are identified, to improve the end-users' ability to deeply customise their IoT systems. This paper presents an empirical study to determine whether alterations to graphical features (colour and size) of automatically generated LineSets improve task performance. LineSets are used to visualise sets and networks. The increasingly common nature of such data suggests that having effective visualisations is important. Unlike many approaches to set and network visualisation, which often use concave or convex shapes to represent sets alongside graphs, LineSets use lines overlaid on a graph. LineSets have been shown to be advantageous over shape-based approaches. However, the graphical properties of LineSets have not been fully explored. Our results suggest that automatically drawn LineSets can be significantly improved for certain tasks through the considered use of colour alongside size variations applied to their graphical elements. In particular, we show that perceptually distinguishable colours, lines of varying width, and nodes of varying diameter lead to improved task performance in automatically laid-out LineSets. Head-Worn Displays (HWD) can potentially support the mobile work of emergency responders, but it remains unclear whether teamwork is affected when emergency responders use HWDs. We reviewed studies that examined HWDs in emergency response contexts to evaluate the impact of HWDs on team performance and on team processes of situation awareness, communication, and coordination. Sixteen studies were identified through manual and systematic literature searches. HWDs appeared to improve the quality of team performance but they increased time to perform under some conditions; effects on team processes were mixed. We identify five challenges to explain the mixed results. We discuss four theoretical perspectives that might address the challenges and guide research needs—joint cognitive systems, distributed cognition, common ground, and dynamical systems. Researchers and designers should use process-based measures and apply greater theoretical guidance to uncover mechanisms by which HWDs shape team processes, and to understand the impact on team performance. Practitioner Summary: This review examines the effects of head-worn displays on teamwork performance and team processes for emergency response. Results are mixed, but study diversity challenges the search for underlying mechanisms. This study aims to investigate learners' interaction with the learning dashboards as a predictor outcome of an online learning experience and, to what extent this interaction data could be used to predict and/or provide guidance through their academic performance. For this purpose, a prescriptive learning dashboard integrated into an e-learning environment was developed as a learning analytics tool. The participants consisted of 126 higher education students enrolled in the 12-week Computer Networks and Communication course. Data gathered through logs and academic performances of learners were analysed with data mining techniques. The result of cluster analysis, based on interaction with the prescriptive learning dashboard, showed that learners were separated into four groups according to their behavioural patterns. A similar pattern appears when the related clusters are profiled based on the academic performances. At predictive analysis, the study indicates that the interaction with prescriptive learning dashboard had certain effects on academic performance of learners significantly and artificial neural networks algorithm yielded the best performance for predicting academic performance. The results support that the usage prescriptive learning dashboards can be applied in online courses as an instructional aid to improve performance of learners and learning design in e-learning environments. Data services, including consultation services for data management and data visualization, have been increasingly needed among health sciences libraries over the past decade, arising from mandates from funders and a need to effectively communicate information gleaned from a proliferating amount of data. The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which U.S.-based health sciences libraries provide services and resources to meet data-related needs. To do so, the authors examined the webpages of American Association of Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) for published evidence of data-related services and resources. Corneal opacity is a leading cause of blindness, accounting for about 4% of global blindness. With corneal opacity, light is unable to pass through the cornea to form a clear image on the retina, resulting in blindness. To address this condition, an intraocular projection device has been designed. This device, while in use, would produce heat. According to international standard regulations, the temperature on the surface of the tissues should not increase more than 2° C due to medical devices. In order to establish the power budget of this intraocular electronic device, a steady state thermal finite element analysis was conducted on two different eye models. The device was placed at 9.98 mm from the retina, and was seen to run up to a maximum power of 82 mW for the first model and 91 mW for the second model. To reduce heating of tissues, the device was extended by 0.5 mm to create an air gap which acted as an insulator. The temperature in the nearest living tissue then dropped below the prescribed limit of 2° C at 100 mW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Display clutter is known to degrade search performance and lead to differences in eye movement measures in different contexts. The goal of this study was to determine whether these differences in eye movements could be detected in the first few seconds of a search task using a realistic display, both with or without time pressure. Participants were asked to search for image or word targets in 40 website screenshots. Time pressure was introduced for half the trials. Clutter algorithms were used to classify the websites as low- or high-clutter. Performance, subjective, and eye-tracking metrics were collected. Results showed that people's attention allocation within the first 3 s of search is different when viewing high-clutter websites. In particular, people's spread of attention was larger in high-clutter websites. The results can be used to detect whether a person is struggling with clutter early on after they view a display. Practitioner summary: Eye-tracking metrics showed that people react differently to a cluttered website in a variety of conditions. These differences were evident within the first 3 s of the search. The impact of the size of silica nanoparticles (SNPs) on the properties of ferroelectric liquid crystals (KCFLC 10R) has been investigated by electro-optical and dielectric techniques. We have found that the doping of silica nanoparticles in the host ferroelectric liquid crystal strongly affects the various properties of doped systems. Doping of silica nanoparticles shows a small decrease in spontaneous polarisation and faster switching time. An improvement in permittivity and conductivity with the temperature at a constant frequency was also noticed after dispersion. This dependence is stronger for large size particles ( ∼ 40 nm) and weaker for small size particles (~12 nm). The Goldstone mode (GM) shifts towards the higher relaxation frequency. These results would be useful to manufacture better optical and electronic devices for display, switching and beam steering applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Creating an interactive, accurate, and low-latency big data visualisation is challenging due to the volume, variety, and velocity of the data. Visualisation options range from visualising the entire big dataset, which could take a long time and be taxing to the system, to visualising a small subset of the dataset, which could be fast and less taxing to the system but could also lead to a less-beneficial visualisation as a result of information loss. The main research questions investigated by this work are what effect sampling has on visualisation insight and how to provide guidance to users in navigating this trade-off. To investigate these issues, we study an initial case of simple estimation tasks on histogram visualisations of sampled big data, in hopes that these results may generalise. Leveraging sampling, we generate subsets of large datasets and create visualisations for a crowd-sourced study involving a simple cognitive visualisation task. Using the results of this study, we quantify insight, sampling, visualisation, and perception error in comparison to the full dataset. We use these results to model the relationship between sample size and insight error, and we propose the use of our model to guide big data visualisation sampling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Effortless separation without damage to the substrates is highly advantageous for the recovery and recycling of expensive electronic components in display devices. In this study, we present an approach for separating transparent adhesive films from substrates using phase-change core-shell nanocapsules. The nanocapsules are prepared from poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanoparticles via the encapsulation of methylcyclohexane (MCH). The evaporated MCHs facilitated the detachment of adhesive films through micro-bubble generation after thermal treatment, leading to the effortless separation of the adhesive layer. The newly fabricated adhesive film with phase-change nanocapsules resulted in high transmittance, with an excellent debonding efficiency after thermal treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shortly after fixating on webpages, users form initial impressions. These initial impressions influence how much users will use and return to websites. Researchers have understudied how objective design features (e.g. visual complexity) influence subjective perceptions of website content and the favorability of initial user impressions. In the present study, the influence of two dimensions of visual complexity – feature complexity and design complexity – were tested within the boundaries of the persuasive model of web design. More specifically, the study examined how visual complexity influences perceptions of visual informativeness, cues for engagement, favourable initial impressions, and behavioural intentions in a sample of young adults (N = 277). Results suggest relationships for both dimensions of visual complexity on all outcome variables using ANOVA and OLS regression procedures and that perceptions of visual informativeness and cues for engagement mediate the relationship between visual complexity and favourable initial impressions and behavioural intentions. The study offers support for the utility of the persuasive model of web design for linking objective design features with subjective design perceptions to better understand favourable initial user impressions. The rapid development of consumer electronics and portable devices imposes a great demand for energy efficient information display systems. Among the information display devices, liquid crystal display (LCD) devices stands in the front. The fabrication of energy-efficient LCD systems demands new material and techniques. In this work, the conventional polyimide alignment layer of twisted nematic liquid crystal device (TNLCD) was replaced with ferroelectric polymer nanoparticle doped alignment layer. Morphology of the alignment layer was analysed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The ferroelectric nature of the polymer alignment layer was studied using dynamic contact electrostatic force microscopy (DC-EFM). TNLCD cells are fabricated with this modified alignment layer and the switching characteristics are compared with the conventional TNLCD devices. The TNLCD with modified alignment layer has shown a reduction of 50% in threshold (Vthr) and 47% reduction in saturation voltage (Vsat). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes an impact detection system using strain signals based on fibre optic sensors(FBG) for the real-time monitoring of the catenary system. The proposed detection system consists of three subsystems: a measuring system, a data processing and analysis system, and a status display and data access system. Because the strain signals obey the normal distribution, to monitor the catenary system in real time, a novel method that combines mobile standard deviation with the mobile Pauta criterion is proposed to distinguish real impact from the strain signal background. The use of this adaptive judging method reduces the misjudgment rate of impacts and improves the impact recognition accuracy. These impacts can be identified by the data analysis system, which provides impact location and their causes using the features of the catenary system. This method can simplify the detection system compared with the traditional location method. An application to a commercial metro line system indicated that the impacts on the catenary system were main caused by overlaps, expansion joints or steady arms, and were verified by correspondence with the floor plan of the catenary and manual inspection results. Visual representations of data introduce several possible challenges for the human visual perception system in perceiving brightness levels. Overcoming these challenges might be simplified by adding sound to the representation. This is called sonification. As sonification provides additional information to the visual information, sonification could be useful in supporting the visual perception. In the present study, usefulness (in terms of accuracy and response time) of sonification was investigated with an interactive sonification test. In the test, participants were asked to identify the highest brightness level in a monochrome visual representation. The task was performed in four conditions, one with no sonification and three with different sonification settings. The results show that sonification is useful, as measured by higher task accuracy, and that the participant's musicality facilitates the use of sonification with better performance when sonification was used. A chronological synopsis of the history of the technology used in experimental and testing work relating to artillery pieces is presented. The period covered is from the mid-seventeenth century up to the Cold War era of the mid-twentieth century. Although the focus is on the development of ballistics measurement in Britain, there are important links to related work in continental Europe. The locus for much of what is described is the Royal Artillery proof and experimental range at Shoeburyness and the key individuals and groups of men and women who worked there. There are longitudinal connections between the very earliest technologies of mechanical chronometry, with paper screens and paper-based calculations, and the later technology where timings, screens and calculations had all become electronic. This study introduces an assessment concerning the use of Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) in the safe navigation of vessels by considering the case studies whether the device played a role in grounding accidents. A total 80 investigation reports of grounding accidents from 2008 to 2018 were analysed. In 22 cases, one or more findings related to ECDIS and Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC) were identified. Twenty two accidents related to ECDIS or ENCs were re-analysed with 4M Overturned Pyramid (MOP) model to determine the characteristics and causes of accidents. Causative factors that related ECDIS in the cases have been listed and explained. Results indicate that ECDIS-related procedures and lack of training have led to incorrect settings of the device, especially alarm settings. The recommendations have been arranged that ECDIS devices, which offer much considerable information for the safe navigation of ships, are able to work more efficiently. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is a methodological article describing how a national social work education research project constructed a taxonomy of educational terms and used database and data visualization software to map the social work curriculum in New Zealand. Mapping the curriculum is difficult enough in the context of a single educational program, however, representing and exploring curriculum topics across the 14 different educational institutions participating in this study presented formidable difficulties. This article explores the approach to curriculum mapping used by the research team and discusses the technologies and information science principles used to classify, map, and visualize curriculum content. It will explain how the researchers constructed a taxonomy of over 600 educational terms, describe how the taxonomy was used to index 402 curriculum documents in a relational database, and illustrate the creation of curriculum visualizations using the Tableau™ data visualization software. The way in which findings from this part of the study will inform subsequent phases of the research will be discussed. In this study, we have studied a method to evaluate the image quality of a convex display and developed a film that can eliminate the ghost image which is pointed out as the biggest problem of image quality deterioration. The brightness uniformity of the screen varies greatly depending on the measurement position due to the shape of the curved surface display, and the unwanted ghost image is generated by the cover window attached to the curved display. The ghost image can be eliminated considerably by attaching a film having a groove structure, and it is possible to develop an efficient shape on film by controlling the size of the groove structure. As a result, the brightness of the ghost image could be reduced from 39.1 cd/m2 to 4.8 cd/m2, and four splitted images with sharp edges could be displayed as a small blur at the edge, so it possible to improve readability and sharpness of convex display. Cloud computing is gaining increasing interest as an enabling technology for improved productivity, efficiency and cost reduction. It also has the potential to add value to reliability and scalability of organisation’s systems, which would allow organisations to better focus on their core business and strategies. This research paper aimed at exploring the perceived potential for value creation from cloud computing in Australian Regional Governments. Using the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, the Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory and Desires Framework (DF), a conceptual research model is devised. The key identified factors that are likely to influence adoption of cloud computing are identified along with the implications to current policies, anticipated benefits and challenges of adoption of cloud computing. The research employed a qualitative approach involving 21 in-depth interviews with Australian local councils’ IT managers. The findings of this research are mapped to the research model factors, thereby presenting and validating a number of value-adding concepts that are expected to contribute to investment decisions on cloud computing adoption. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Transition to Literacy (T2L) software features (i.e., dynamic text and speech output upon selection of a graphic symbol) within a grid display in an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app, on the sight word reading skills of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and complex communication needs. The study implemented a single-subject multiple probe research design across one set of three participants. The same design was utilized with an additional set of two participants. As part of the intervention, the participants were exposed to an AAC app with the T2L features during a highly structured matching task. With only limited exposure to the features, the five participants all demonstrated increased accuracy of identification of 12 targeted sight words. This study provides preliminary evidence that redesigning AAC apps to include the provision of dynamic text combined with speech output, can positively impact the sight-word reading of participants during a structured task. This adaptation in AAC system design could be used to complement literacy instruction and to potentially infuse components of literacy learning into daily communication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a scalable, semi-automated process for studying the usage of public displays. The process consists of gathering anonymous interaction and skeletal data of passersby during public display deployment and programmatically analyzing the data. This article demonstrates the use of the process with the analysis of the Information Wall, a gesture-controlled public information display. Information Wall was deployed in a university campus for one year and collected an extensive data set of more than 100 000 passersby. The main benefits of the process include (1) gathering of large data sets without considerable use of resources, (2) fast, semi-automated data analysis, and (3) applicability to studying the effects of long-term public display deployments. In analyzing the usage and passersby data of the Information Wall in our validation study, the main findings uncovered using the method were (i) most users were first-time users exploring the system, and not many returned to use the system again, and (ii) many users were accompanied by passive users who observed interaction from further away, which could suggest a case of multi-user interaction blindness. In the past, logged data has mainly been used as a supporting method for in situ observations and interviews, and its use has required a considerable amount of manual work. Five computer network Defence displays (one Alphanumeric and four graphical displays: Radial Traffic Analyser, Bar Graph, Cube, and Treemap) were evaluated. Two experiments were conducted using different methodological procedures. Participants responded to questions that were structured to approximate various ways in which analysts might need to consider network traffic. Numerous significant effects were obtained and a fairly clear rank ordering of performance for the four graphical displays was obtained across experiments (from best to worst): Bar Graph, Cube, Radial Traffic Analyser, and Treemap. The results are interpreted from the perspective of ecological interface design: the quality of performance is directly related to the quality of semantic mapping between work domain, display, and human constraints. Factors that may have contributed to the poor performance for the Radial Traffic Analyser and Treemap displays are discussed. General implications for display and interface design are provided. Increasing the perception of climate data plays an important role in meteorological data analysis. However, the presentation and human–computer interaction of most existing climate data display systems is still limited to two-dimensional screen space, which affects the user's acquisition analysis and understanding of data. In order to help users to obtain a greater degree of information and improve user experience, this paper designs a vector climate data perception system based on virtual reality and gesture interaction techniques by using data visualization and dynamic gesture interaction. The experiments show that the proposed intuitive visual analysis system of 3D space data provides users with a highly immersive data acquisition platform, and helps users to understand data more effectively. Thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) has been used in a wide range of electronic devices. For large-sized and high-density TFT-LCD panel inspection, a high-resolution line scan is demanded. A TFT-LCD panel image at a fine resolution presents very complicated patterns with less regularity. The paper proposes a non-referential defect detection scheme that directly works on the one-dimensional (1D) line images using the Fourier image reconstruction. The 1D grey-level line image is first divided into small segments, each of the length of the repeated period for a given TFT-LCD panel. The divided segments are then combined as a two-dimensional (2D) image. The frequency components corresponding to the 1D background pattern can be easily identified in the 2D Fourier spectrum. By eliminating the frequency components in the 2D Fourier spectrum that represent the periodic structural pattern of the combined 2D image and then back-transforming the image using the inverse Fourier transform, the 2D Fourier reconstruction process can effectively remove the complicated background pattern and well preserve local anomalies. Experimental results on a number of micro-defects embedded in different patterned regions of TFT-LCD panels show that the proposed method can reliably detect various ill-defined defects. Display quality is part of the final liquid crystal display (LCD) inspection process before shipping. A 'limited sample' is provided based on the agreement between the manufacturer and the customer. This inspection usually includes an operator who compares the LCD product with the limit sample using the naked eye. The procedure often causes controversy in the manufacturing plant and between the manufacturer and customers. This study attempts to establish a more objective, automatic method to determine the MURA-type defects in LCD panels. A luminance meter is used as the measurement device. An LCD panel is divided into 144 areas. Five points are measured to obtain the luminances. Analysis of variance and the exponentially weighted moving average techniques are applied to determine the existence of MURA defects. Fifty normal LCD panels and 50 MURA defects panels were used to test the inspection method. All 50 LCD panels with MURA defects were correctly identified using the proposed inspection method. The proposed inspection method can help LCD manufacturers reduce the variation in LCD panel inspection results and establish a better relationship with customers through a common inspection mechanism. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have tremendous applications in a variety of industrial and the public Internet of Things (IoT) where information can be delivered through embedded and networked devices. In this paper, we propose a new architecture underlining IoT realm and we implement a long-range (LoRa) wireless radio-based information display system. In particular, using the commercially available LoRa™, we develop WSN infrastructures by using microcontroller to manage the required data from and to a 3G gateway as well as the LoRa™ nodes. Meteorological information is crucial in various aspects of life, so is in the field of agriculture. Lack of access to good information technology infrastructure in the rural region of developing countries has deprived farmers of timely weather information and which can cause significant losses in production and economy. Thus, this paper describes our work on the real-time implementation of a LoRa-based network. The work is mainly intended for rural farmers of developing countries considering the realization of IoT, information and communication technology. The proposed system is able to wirelessly deliver well-timed and valuable information for farmers across the country to boost productivity and minimize needless wastes before, during and after the harvesting period. Furthermore, in this study we proved the functionality of the entire WSN infrastructure by testing data transmission-reception in a non-line of sight environment among the gateway and LoRa™ transceiver nodes considering both indoor-to-outdoor and outdoor-to-outdoor scenarios. Thanks to the advancements in ubiquitous and wearable technologies, Personal Informatics (PI) systems can now reach a larger audience of users. However, it is not still clear whether this kind of tool can fit the needs of their daily lives. Our research aims at identifying specific barriers that may prevent the widespread adoption of PI and finding solutions to overcome them. We requested users without competence in self-tracking to use different PI instruments during their daily practices, identifying five user requirements by which to design novel PI tools. On such requirements, we developed a new system that can stimulate the use of these technologies, by enhancing the perceived benefits of collecting personal data. Then, we explored how naïve and experienced users differently explore their personal data in our system through a user trial. Results showed that the system was successful at helping individuals manage and interpret their own data, validated the usefulness of the requirements found and inspired three further design opportunities that could orient the design of future PI systems. With the advent of multi-touch tabletops, software developers are creating innovative interfaces for applications such as interactive map systems. In this article, we summarized three representative interfaces from prevalent electronic map applications and literatures—gesture based, widget based, and hybrid, which supported both gestures and widgets—and then compared the effectiveness and the efficiency of these three interfaces by experiments. The results show that the hybrid interface had a better performance, requiring less task-completion time and operations, and causing less arm fatigue. The widget-based interface had the least distance traversed by fingers, but it required many tapping operations. The gesture-based interface was easier to learn compared to the widget-based interface, but the distance traversed during finger movements was the longest. 4-methyl-7-(10-(pyren-1-yl)anthracen-9-yl)-2H-chromen-2-one (PAC), 7,7'-(anthracene-9,10-diyl)bis(4- methyl-2H-chromen-2-one) (CAC), 7-Ant-hracen-9-yl-4-methyl-chromen-2-one (AC), and 7-(naphthalen-1-yl)-2H-chromen-2-one (NC) were synthesized through Suzuki aryl-aryl coupling reaction. Optical and electroluminescence (EL) properties were evaluated by UV-visible absorption, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and EL devices. Synthesized compounds were used as an emitting layer (EML) in non-doped device with the following structures: ITO/2-TNATA (60 nm)/NPB (15 nm)/synthesized compounds (35 nm)/Alq3(20 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (200 nm). The emerging creative practices of digital collections are increasing in prominence thanks to the access to, and appeal of, data visualizations. Interactive data visualizations, such as a map, timeline, chart, graph, or artist's rendering of data, enable users to pursue their own research interests within a collection and participate in new areas of research. Use of these data visualizations enhances the scope of the collection and enables a modern and diverse thematic collection to emerge. This article considers the question: Does the addition of data visualizations affect how users participate with a research collection? Impacts on collection development, application of user-centered design, and analysis of users' exploratory strategies are discussed. Communicating library data with external stakeholders is a growing area of importance in the profession, and library websites provide an easy way of disseminating this information. Determining the types of data that will be most impactful in telling a library's story is vital to an effective online data display. This research project reviewed the websites of 143 academic research libraries to determine if the libraries were publicly sharing general library data via a dashboard or other data display. For those libraries sharing data, information was recorded on the types of data shared, the types of data visualizations utilized, the age of the data presented, and whether multi-year trends were represented. The results showed that just under half of the academic research libraries in the study population had general library data displays on their websites. Most focused on traditional types of library data, such as collection size, reference and help desk interactions, instruction sessions, and circulation numbers for physically-held materials. Situation awareness (SA) constitutes a critical factor in road safety, strongly related to accidents. This paper describes the evaluation of a proposed SA enhancement system (SAES) that exploits augmented reality through a head-up display (HUD). Two SAES designs were evaluation (information rich vs. minimal information) using a custom-made simulator and the Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique with performance and EEG measures. The paper describes the process of assessing the SA of drivers using the SAES, through a series of experiments with participants in a Cave Automatic Virtual Environment. The effectiveness of the SAES was tested in a within-group research design. The results showed that the information rich (radar-style display) was superior to the minimal (arrow hazard indicator) design and that both SAES improved drivers’ SA and performance compared to the control (no HUD) design. Practitioner Summary: Even though driver situation awareness is considered as one of the leading causes of road accidents, little has been done to enhance it. This study investigates the impact of modes of information presentation on information dimensions. Twenty-four published studies were reviewed. The results of sixteen of these were cumulated by application of meta-analysis technique. The ensuing results demonstrate that the bar presentation format is slightly better than the tabular one in terms of information precision; however, the face chart is superior to the tabular format with respect to relevancy, and the multicolor presentation is more relevant than the monocolor. In addition, two factors of influence (moderators) were verified. First, personality, which is classified as field-dependent and field-independent, acts as a moderator between color and information relevancy.
