Reproductive health significantly contributes to the overall well-being and social welfare of women. Within the spectrum of modern and traditional contraceptive methods in use, condoms have been strongly advocated by numerous HIV programs as a primary means of preventing HIV infection in Sri Lanka. Given the intrinsic relationship between contraceptive utilization and HIV awareness, our study aims to concurrently analyze the patterns of contraceptive usage and HIV knowledge, while accounting for their potential correlation. In this study, we introduced the application of the Gumbel type II distribution to effectively capture the interdependence of these joint probabilities, accounting for various covariates. The outcome of simulation studies demonstrated the superior performance of the integrated joint model, in comparison to the separate univariate models. Our findings highlighted several noteworthy risk factors associated with both contraceptive usage and HIV prevention knowledge. These included variables such as residence, level of education, wealth quintile, husband's education level, number of children, engagement with the newspapers, television viewership, and mobile phone usage. The Result indicates a positive association between the adoption of contraception and the awareness of HIV prevention measures, suggesting that individuals who actively embrace contraception are more likely to possess knowledge about preventing HIV transmission. South Africa is the epicentre of the HIV pandemic. Although there have been health promotion education campaigns to reduce HIV incidence, these have not achieved the desired outcomes. When exploring the effectiveness of these campaigns, it is useful not only to examine HIV knowledge, but also to explore the relationship between that knowledge and health-related behaviour. This study aimed to determine the (1) level of knowledge of HIV prevention, (2) relationship between the level of knowledge and the adoption of these behaviours and (3) barriers to sexual behaviour change of vulnerable women in Durban's city centre, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. A mixed methods approach was used to collect information from a marginalised population of women (n = 109) attending a non-governmental organisation, which provides for the needs of people from low socio-economic strata. Data were collected during September 2018 at a wellness day programme at the centre. A total of 109 women, over the age of 18 years answered the questionnaire. Knowledge of HIV transmission was high, with majority of participants correctly identifying modes of transmission. Almost all the participants (91.2%) had been tested for HIV, with 68.8% tested a minimum of three times. Despite this, sexual risk behaviour was high. Despite the high level of knowledge of HIV transmission, there was no relationship between HIV knowledge and adoption of behaviours for the prevention of HIV transmission (p =.457). However, bivariate analysis showed an association between transactional sex and living in informal housing (OR = 31.94, 95% CI: 5.65–180.63, p <.001). Living in informal housing was also associated with having multiple current sexual partners (OR = 6.30, 95% CI: 1.39–28.42, p =.02). Multivariate analysis, after adjusting for all other factors, indicated that the odds of having transactional sex was increased by 23 times in those who did not have formal housing (OR = 23.306, 95% CI: 3.97–144.59, p =.001). Qualitative responses showed that women perceived poverty as the overarching factor determining the lifestyle choices which impacted their health. They indicated a need for employment opportunities and provision of housing to alleviate both poverty as well as transactional sex. Although, participants from this study understood the benefits of the protective behaviours to prevent HIV transmission, economic and social factors do not afford this vulnerable group the opportunity nor the motivation to adopt such behaviours. In the current climate of increasing unemployment and escalating GBV, urgent interventions are needed in terms of employment opportunities and empowerment drives to prevent an increase in HIV transmission. Background: Long-distance truck drivers (LDTDs) have a higher rate of HIV infection compared to the general population. This is due to their living and working conditions which predispose them to riskier sexual behaviours. Inadequate knowledge of HIV and AIDS, coupled with risky sexual behaviours such as unprotected sex with commercial sex workers (CSWs), predisposes LDTDs to contract and propagate HIV. This study aims to determine the factors associated with buying sex and the knowledge that condoms prevent HIV transmission among long-distance truck drivers at Kazungula weighbridge terminal in the Chobe District of Botswana. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive survey was employed and 399 LDTDs participated. A questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic data and information on knowledge of HIV and AIDS and the sexual behaviours of the LDTDs. Results: The results reveal that more than half of the LDTDs (56.9%; n = 227) had paid for sex with CSWs at some point in their travels, and 27.1% (n = 108) reported having had unprotected sex with CSWs. The LDTDs who preferred to have sex with CSWs without a condom had about five times the odds of buying sex with CSWs than those who preferred to use a condom (AOR 4.9; 95% CI 2.85–8.46). Disliking condom use was a factor contributing to less knowledge of condom use preventing HIV among the LDTDs (AOR 0.4; CI 0.17–0.97). Conclusion: It can be concluded from the results of this study that the LDTDs engage in considerable risky sexual behaviours, and associated factors were found to be multidimensional. This population remains of concern in HIV acquisition and transmission. Objectives: This study aimed to understand how the association between internalized homonegativity (IH) and sexual risk behavior differed in Spain (N = 3,336) and Turkey (N = 550). Methods: We used multigroup structural equation modeling. Results: HIV and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) knowledge mediated the relationship between IH and sexual risk behavior among MSM in Spain, but not among men in Turkey. Higher HIV/PrEP knowledge was associated with higher sexual risk behavior among MSM in Spain, while among MSM in Turkey the association was in the opposite direction. The global trend of poorer outcomes across the HIV treatment cascade for men has drawn attention to the importance of engaging men in prevention and treatment services. The South African construction industry is one of the economic sectors most adversely affected by HIV/AIDS. Previous research on HIV testing behaviour among workers in the industry has revealed that male workers are less likely to be tested than female workers. Given this gender differential, this study employed a field-administered survey to gather data from 450 site-based, male construction workers in Western Cape, South Africa. An integrated model comprising demographic, cognitive, and behavioural factors was then hypothesised to explain HIV testing behaviour. Bivariate analysis and structural equation modelling were then used to test the model. Findings indicate that HIV knowledge, having previously had an STI, and possessing a positive attitude towards HIV testing are terminal predictors of testing behaviour. As a strategy for positively influencing testing behaviour, employers should ensure that effective communication about HIV testing is established with workers across all levels of education and ethnic groups. South Africa implemented Universal Test & Treat (UTT) guidelines in September 2016. We examine HIV/ART knowledge among newly diagnosed from a prospective study enrolling newly diagnosed HIV-positive adults, under same-day ART policy, at four primary health clinics in Johannesburg, South Africa. We describe factors associated with high HIV/ART related knowledge score among newly diagnosed patients using Poisson regression. We included 652 HIV positive adults (64.1% female; median age 33 years (IQR: 28–39). Overall, 539 (82.7%) patients were classified as having high HIV/ART knowledge, 14.7% medium knowledge and 2.6% had low knowledge. HIV/ART knowledge was mainly associated to high English literacy (aRR 0.9 Medium vs High, 95% CI: 0.8–0.9; aRR 0.7 for Low vs High: 95% CI: 0.6–0.9). However, patients who did not disclose their intentions for HIV test (aRR 0.9, not disclosed intentions vs having disclosed intentions to test, 95% CI: 0.8–0.9), participants who indicated concerns with ART (aRR 0.9 moderate to high vs low concerns, 95% CI: 0.8–0.9) were less likely to have high knowledge. Our results highlight a correlation between English literacy and good knowledge. There is a need to make information more accessible in a non-English language. Objective: The Buffalo, New York region is one of the leading refugee resettlement areas in the country, settling 94% of African refugees in 2014. However, little is known about their health beliefs, particularly regarding sexual health and HIV. This study's purpose was to describe HIV attitudes and beliefs in a sample of African refugee women, a population that is increasingly present in the country, yet seldom represented in the literature. Design: A convenience sample of 101 African refugee women were recruited via snowball technique in Buffalo, New York. Data were collected from July 2017–July 2018, via paper-pen survey, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Participants had low levels of education, but high HIV screening rates. Inconsistencies between knowledge of HIV acquisition and behaviors relating to HIV positive individuals may indicate HIV stigma among the population. Black and Latina women are disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS. Despite existing research linking social networks and HIV risk among men who have sex with men (MSM) and other high-risk populations, little research has examined how ethnic/racial minority women's social networks shape HIV prevention and intervention targets. Using interviews with a sample of 165 predominantly Black and Latina-identifying women from a small city in the Western U.S., this research examines the relationship between egocentric network characteristics and HIV knowledge, attitudes, and testing history. Results reveal that network characteristics play a significant role in shaping HIV-related knowledge, prejudice, and testing intention but not HIV testing history. Individual-level factors like homelessness and perceptions of testing barriers are more salient for explaining testing behaviors than network characteristics. Intervention efforts to improve knowledge and reduce prejudice among Black and Latina women may benefit from mobilizing network ties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HIV disproportionately affect adolescent girls and young women in sub-Saharan Africa. In Uganda, the HIV prevalence is four times higher in adolescent girls compared to boys. This study examined gender, HIV general and clinical knowledge, and prevention attitudes among adolescents living with HIV in Uganda. Data from a cluster randomized clinical trial were analyzed. A total of 702 adolescents (average age of 12.4) were randomized to either a control arm receiving bolstered standard of care or the treatment arm receiving bolstered standard of care plus a family economic empowerment intervention to support medication adherence. Ordinary Least Squares models that adjust for clustering of adolescents within health clinics were conducted. No gender differences were observed in HIV knowledge and prevention attitudes at baseline. However, at 12-months follow-up, boys were more likely than girls to report correct HIV general knowledge (d = 0.21), clinical knowledge (d = 0.48), and favorable prevention attitudes (d = 0.27). The intervention was not associated with any of the outcomes. Given the high HIV prevalence among adolescents, specifically girls, there is need to develop and/or tailor existing programs and interventions that equip adolescent girls with comprehensive knowledge and prevention attitudes, that are culturally appropriate, to reduce HIV transmission and reinfection within this population. Over the past decade, incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has increased significantly in Tajikistan, with female adolescents and emerging adults (i.e., 15–24 years old) particularly vulnerable for acquiring HIV. This study sought to examine whether HIV knowledge and HIV testing among female youth in Tajikistan have increased between 2012 and 2017 using national data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). In addition, predictors of HIV knowledge and testing were examined. Results suggest that between 2012 and 2017, self-reported HIV testing prevalence increased from 10% to 15% among female adolescents and emerging adults. In addition, HIV knowledge increased significantly among female youth from 2012 to 2017; however, many respondents still displayed limited knowledge about the modes of HIV transmission and effective prevention methods. In order to reduce incidence of HIV among youth in Tajikistan, greater efforts are needed to engage women in education and prevention efforts, as well as to understand the unique vulnerabilities that place some subgroups at increased risk for infection. The current body of literature on the HIV knowledge related to young adult Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) individuals residing in the United States is substantially underdeveloped. As the number of MENA individuals residing in the US continues to rise, there remains a need for research investigating the levels of general HIV knowledge for this unique group. An exploratory cross-sectional design was used for an anonymous online survey of MENA adults ages 18–35 (n = 198) residing in the United States concerning their levels of HIV knowledge. Results showed that less than fifty percent (46.40%) of the sample reported adequate knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention methods. Multiple regression analyses indicate that prior sexual health education, prior HIV testing, a four-year college degree and identification as a Muslim predicted higher HIV knowledge. Access to antiretroviral treatment (ART) in South Africa is suboptimal and erratic. For those on treatment, compliance remains a significant challenge. Interruptions to ART have negative implications for the individual and the epidemic. ART is therefore not a sustainable solution and there is an urgent need for a cure. As HIV cure research expands globally, the need to engage community members about cure is becoming a priority. It is vital that potential trial participants understand basic HIV cure research concepts. An online interactive educational tool was co-created with HIV stakeholders to engage and inform HIV research trial participants. The study was conducted with patients at the FAMCRU HIV clinic at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. The educational tool comprises two modules that provide information on HIV prevention, treatment and cure research. Participants completed a questionnaire before and after interacting with the programme. There was a significant increase in knowledge scores of participants demonstrated after using the tool. Using data from the 2012 and 2017 Tajikistan Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), this research explores the trends and determinants of HIV/AIDS awareness and knowledge among women of reproductive age in Tajikistan across two time periods and identifies areas for improvement. The results of this research indicate that nearly four in ten women had not heard of HIV/AIDS before participating in the DHS. Moreover, between 2012 and 2017, the level of HIV/AIDS awareness among women decreased from 63% to 57%. Although the level of HIV knowledge increased from 21% in 2012–33% in 2017, many women still lack knowledge about the modes of HIV transmission and effective prevention methods. Considering that the HIV epidemic is currently increasing in Tajikistan, HIV/AIDS prevention interventions are urgently needed that include outreach efforts targeting younger women and those from rural areas and lower socioeconomic groups. Research on female orphans rarely explores their comprehensive HIV knowledge, which is a proximate factor for HIV vulnerability. Access to information generally is associated with higher HIV knowledge. Although emerging, but still limited, is research that accounts for broader community-level factors, such as the spatial distribution of HIV prevalence and orphanhood. This study explores if there is a relationship between individual orphanhood status and access to information and HIV knowledge among females aged 15–17 years in Malawi using 2015/6 Demographic and Health Survey data. The study also investigates whether there are orphan/non-orphan differences in HIV knowledge with increasing community-level HIV prevalence. Logistic regression analyses indicate that being an orphan is significantly associated with having less access to information through school and mass media (OR: 0.6, p < 0.05), whereas higher community orphanhood prevalence is associated with comprehensive HIV knowledge (OR: 1.1, p < 0.05). The analyses revealed a small disadvantage among orphans in terms of their comprehensive HIV knowledge in areas with higher HIV prevalence. School attendance and age-appropriate progression are positively associated with HIV knowledge. Men's relatively low rates of HIV testing has been termed the 'HIV blind spot' and recently declared by UNAIDS as a top priority. This study uses data from five nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to explore factors associated with men's lifetime HIV testing. Between 29.3% and 34.9% of men ages 15–49 in these countries had never tested for HIV and men who held accepting attitudes towards gender-based violence, who lacked HIV knowledge, and who held stigmatising views of HIV were more likely to report never testing for HIV. Findings are interpreted, including a discussion of the possible unintended consequences of current 90-90-90 targets on men's relatively low testing rates. The results point to possible intervention opportunities to increase HIV testing among men in high-HIV prevalence settings in Eastern and Southern Africa and emphasise the importance of changing men's perceptions related to stigma and gender norms. Theater-based approaches have been implemented globally as a health education and behavior change strategy for decades. Studies have shown that live theater performances can engage an audience and influence the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of audience members. Moreover, literature has shown that adolescents find theater-based interventions to be more acceptable and memorable than traditional didactic teaching methods. Few studies, however, have compared the effect of different intervention delivery modes on adolescents' sexual health knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs. The present study aims to fill this gap in the literature and to evaluate the efficacy of two delivery modes (live and virtual) of a theater-based sexual health intervention for promoting sexual health strategies among adolescents. A total of 300 high school students were included in this study. Participants in both the live and virtual modes reported increased HIV knowledge and improved safe sex self-efficacy, suggesting that the live and virtual modes have comparable impact. Given the low cost and resource demands, these findings support the utilization of a virtual program as a promising practice for disseminating a sexual health intervention targeting adolescents on a large scale. Adolescents of color in urban communities are at high risk for contracting HIV, unlikely to have access to HIV testing services, or any other form of screening services. Using latent class analysis among a sample of African American/Black (48.1%) and Hispanic/Latina(o) (42%) youth (N = 668; Mage = 16.30; 51% female), this study examined the association cluster group membership, based on sexual negotiation skills and risk behavior, had on HIV knowledge, perception of risk, and the number of sexual partners. Five distinct cluster groups emerged, with significant heterogeneity observed between cluster groups on select dependent variables. A larger proportion of the study participants were in cluster groups that identified higher levels of sexual negotiation skills; however, variation was present based on risk behaviors. Results provide useful recommendations for research on HIV/AIDS and risk behaviors, as well prevention-intervention programing among urban youth of color. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: HIV testing and counselling (HTC) has been a viable tool in controlling the spread of HIV/AIDS, and serves as the entry point in the HIV care and treatment cascade. In Africa, HIV-related morbidity and mortality are high with thousands still unaware of their HIV status. This study assessed the effect of on-site multiple HIV control interventions on the uptake of HTC services, knowledge and sexual behaviour among residents of two military cantonments [barracks] in south-east Nigeria. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted among residents of cantonments in two states in Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique was used to select 350 respondents each at intervention and control sites. A pre-tested interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect information. On-site HTC services were established, with the training of HTC counsellors and peer educators. HIV awareness carnivals, with information, education and communication activities were conducted. Data were analysed with SPSS software and statistical tests carried out at 5% level of significance. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in the uptake of HTC services from 41.1% pre-intervention to 81.1% post-intervention (χ2 = 113.8, p < 0.001). Also, knowledge about HIV improved significantly from 35.4% to 98.8% (p < 0.001) in the intervention group, together with avoidance of risky sexual behaviour. Conclusion: The study demonstrated the effectiveness of multiple on-site intervention models in improving HIV knowledge, uptake of HTC services, and sexual behaviour among diverse cantonment residents. In Botswana, an estimated 350 000 people live with HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS testing rates are low, suggesting that many other people remain undiagnosed. Stigma related to HIV/AIDS is prevalent and contributes to low testing rates and under-diagnosis of the virus. Identifying factors that contribute to stigma, such as insufficient or inaccurate knowledge of HIV/AIDS, may be critical in increasing early identification and treatment. This cross-sectional study used nationally representative data from the 2013 Botswana AIDS Impact Survey (BAIS) IV to examine the relationship between HIV/AIDS knowledge and stigmatising attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). The mean (standard error) for stigma towards PLWHA score and HIV/AIDS knowledge score were 0.99 (0.02) and 5.90 (0.03) respectively. HIV/AIDS knowledge score and stigma towards PLWHA score were strongly positively correlated r (4,4045) = 0.415, p < 0.001). After adjusting for potential confounders, HIV/AIDS knowledge score significantly predicted stigma towards PLWHA score [coefficient β (95% CI)] [−0.25 (−0.29, −0.20), p < 0.001]. These findings imply that programmes and interventions that increase HIV/AIDS knowledge may reduce the pervasive apprehension, blame, and stigmatising attitude held towards PLWHA in Botswana. Understanding the link between HIV knowledge, risky sexual behaviors, and social intolerance such as stigma and discrimination is important for HIV prevention and treatment program planning. We investigated whether intolerant attitudes and practices among Ugandan adults were associated with HIV-transmission knowledge. We analyzed data from a nationally representative population-based household survey, the 2011 Uganda AIDS Indicator Survey. A total of 15,526 participants who responded to questions on HIV knowledge, social intolerance and risky sexual behavior were included in this analysis. Results show that 34.8% of respondents reported having fear of casual contact with people living with HIV (PLWA), 21% blame PLWAs for their disease, 62% would not want HIV infection in their family disclosed, while 25% reported engaging in risky sexual behaviors. After adjusting for age, sex, residence, and level of education, people with low HIV-transmission knowledge had almost three-fold higher odds of fear of casual contact with a PLWA (aOR = 2.70, 95%CI = 2.33-3.13), and had 30% higher odds of HIV-related stigmatizing attitudes (aOR = 1.29, 95%CI = 1.07-1.54). Further, they had 47% higher odds of having sex under the influence of alcohol (aOR = 1.47, 95%CI = 1.25-1.73) and 40% higher odds of having unprotected sex with any of their last three sex partners (aOR = 1.39, 95%CI = 1.06-1.89). Our findings show that intolerant attitudes such as stigma still persist, particularly among people with low HIV-transmission knowledge. Improving knowledge about HIV/AIDS can foster positive attitudes and building safe practices among populations, and is critical for improving prevention and treatment programs. Objective: HIV-related stigma is one of the strongest barriers to prevention and treatment. HIV prevalence in U.S. college students is estimated around 0.02%, but is thought to be drastically underreported. We examined the influence of HIV knowledge on the relationship between HIV testing history and stigma in college students. Participants: A random sample of 2343 students, over the age of 18, attending a large university in the southeastern United States completed the survey in January 2016. Methods: A mediation model was constructed in regression framework to explore the relationship between HIV testing history, knowledge, and stigma. Results: HIV testing history was associated with higher knowledge scores (a path: B = 4.08, p <.001) and higher knowledge scores were associated with lower stigma (b path: B =.01, p <.001). These results suggest that HIV knowledge partially mediates the relation between HIV testing history and stigma in college students. Conclusions: HIV testing history may decrease stigma by increasing knowledge. Results can be used to inform college health promotion practice on developing programs and services. Objective: College students are a high-risk population for new human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) diagnoses. Although condom use self-efficacy and HIV knowledge can protect against risky sexual behavior (RSB), these same protective factors have been shown to exacerbate RSB. The influence of alcohol use can further complicate these protective factors to influence RSB. Participants: 689 African American/Black and non-Hispanic White college students attending a public university in the Southeast United States. Method: This study sought to examine the relations between condom use self-efficacy and HIV knowledge with RSB and the moderating effect of alcohol use. Results: Findings showed positive associations between RSB and HIV knowledge and alcohol use. Unexpectedly, low frequency drinkers with high condom use self-efficacy were at increased risk for RSB compared to high frequency drinking counterparts. HIV transmission within stable heterosexual HIV serodiscordant couples accounts for almost half the new incident infections in South Africa and Uganda. Advances in HIV prevention provide opportunities to reduce transmission risk within serodiscordant partnerships (e.g., antiretroviral treatment (ART), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), medical male circumcision, and couples-based HIV counselling and testing). These interventions require a clinical encounter with a provider who recognises prevention opportunities within these partnerships. We explored healthcare provider understanding of HIV serodiscordance in a reproductive counselling study with providers in eThekwini district, South Africa, and Mbarara district, Uganda. In eThekwini, in-depth interviews (29) and focus group discussions (2) were conducted with 42 providers (counsellors, nurses and doctors) from public sector clinics. In Mbarara, in-depth interviews were conducted with 38 providers (medical officers, clinical officers, nurses, peer counsellors and village health workers). Thematic analysis was conducted using NVivo software. In eThekwini, many providers assumed HIV seroconcordance among client partners and had difficulty articulating how serodiscordance occurs. Mbarara providers had a better understanding of HIV serodiscordance. In the two countries, providers who understood HIV serodiscordance were better able to describe useful HIV-prevention strategies. Despite substantial global efforts to reduce HIV-related stigma, stigma and discrimination remain widespread and are among the most poorly understood aspects of the epidemic. However, there has been little research on whether HIV stigma in a country is associated with HIV prevalence. This article offers a socioecological perspective for understanding HIV stigma in a context of HIV prevalence. Using two international data sets (the UNAIDS 2009 HIV Epidemiological Report and the World Values Survey), we investigated whether and how HIV prevalence is associated with individual- and country-level HIV stigma. Results showed that in countries with higher HIV prevalence, people reported less HIV stigma (Studies 1 & 2). HIV knowledge mediated the relationship between HIV prevalence and stigma (Study 2). People in countries with higher HIV prevalence reported more knowledge about HIV transmission, which reduced their stigmatizing attitudes. These findings suggest that stigma-reduction programs should incorporate a socioecological perspective and consider the roles of prevalence rate of and knowledge of the disease. Knowledge about different health-related attitudes, beliefs, and risks is of significant interest to scholars in different Social Science disciplines. Usually knowledge is collected in a form of multiple variables and then constructed as a composite indicator. The question any researcher working with knowledge-related variables faces is: what is the best way to measure and summarise different dimensions of health-related knowledge? The main goal of this paper is to evaluate and compare simple score and latent class approaches to measuring and summarising health-related knowledge using population data on HIV knowledge collected in five selected countries (China, India, Kenya, Malawi, and Ukraine). The advantages and shortcomings of both approaches (simple score and latent class approaches) to measuring and summarising health-related knowledge are evaluated and discussed. A surge in heterosexual transmission of HIV among men in post-Soviet countries prompts the need to understand the determinants of HIV testing in the region. Survey data from Belarus (n = 2,769), Moldova (n = 1,545), and Ukraine (n = 3,620) were used to assess an influence of psychosocial determinants on testing among men. A mediation analysis for binary outcomes was used to assess effects of knowledge and stigma on testing. While knowledge had a positive influence on testing in each country, an indirect influence of knowledge through stigma was unique for each country. Studies on HIV/AIDS routinely identify stigma as a barrier to both reducing sexual risk and increasing protective behaviors. Due to the high rates of HIV infections among Black females in the United States, this exploratory study examined stigma perceptions and their associations with risk behaviors in a sample of 281 Black females aged 18-23 attending family planning clinics. Participants completed the HIV/AIDS Stigma scale which has three sub-scales assessing knowledge, subjective, and community stigma. Risk behaviors were also measured. The majority of participants demonstrated a lack of knowledge about HIV transmission pathways, some displayed self-shaming attitudes associated with an HIV diagnosis, and perceived stigma from the community. Overall, there were no associations between the stigma subscales and risk behaviors. Since there are major inconsistences in knowledge, stigma and behaviors among sexually active Black female youth, HIV education must address both stigma and risk behaviors associated with HIV transmission. These results suggest family planning clinics should engage this youth population in both routine HIV screening and HIV and risk behavior education during their healthcare visits. Background: Globally, individuals' self-assessment of vulnerability to HIV infection is important to maintain safer sexual behaviour and reduce risky behaviours. However, determinants of self-perceived risk of HIV infection are not well documented and differ. We assessed the level of self-perceived vulnerability to HIV infection in Nigeria and also identified its risk factors. Methods: We explored a recent nationally representative data with self-reported vulnerability ('high', 'low' and 'no risk at all') to HIV infection as the outcome of interest. Data were weighted and association between the outcomes and the risk factors determined. We used simple ordered logit regression to model relationship between the outcome variable and risk factors, and controlled for the significant variables in multiple ordered logistic regression at 5% significance level. Results: About 74% had good knowledge of HIV transmission and 6% had experienced STI recently. The likelihood of assessing oneself as having 'no risk at all' was 50% and for 'high chances' was 1.6%. Self-perceived high risk of HIV was higher among those who recently experienced STI (5.6%) than those who did not (1.7%), and also higher among those who recently engaged in transactional sex and had multiple sexual partners. The odds of good knowledge of HIV transmission on high self-perceived vulnerability to HIV was 19% higher than poor knowledge (OR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.12–1.27). Also, respondents who recently had multiple sexual partners were 72% (OR = 1.72, 95% CI: 1.60–1.86) more likely to report self as having high risk. Younger respondents aged 14–19 years had higher odds of 41% (OR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.29–1.55) to perceive self as having high vulnerability to HIV than older respondents. Conclusion: High vulnerability to HIV infection was reported among younger respondents, those with history of STIS and those who engage in multiple sexual relations. Despite high level of risky sexual behaviour and good knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention found in this study, self-perceived vulnerability to HIV generally is low. For the low perception found in this study to translate to low chance of HIV infection, there is need for all stakeholders to embark on risk reduction initiatives through sexual education that would minimise risky sexual practices and ensuring availability and affordability of HIV prevention methods. HIV infection among older adults is increasing. Previous research suggests that many older adults do not see themselves as at risk for HIV and that many subscribe to myths related to HIV transmission. In this focus group study (N = 48) we solicited the beliefs that older adults held about HIV. The older adults in this study were knowledgeable about how HIV is typically transmitted. However, we also identified that they subscribed to misconceptions regarding casual contact transmission and were fearful of transmission from the medical system. Heterosexual anal intercourse is associated with increased risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Research on the social and psychological risk factors associated with heterosexual unprotected anal intercourse among Hispanic women in the USA is limited. We examined demographic, mental health, relationship power, sexual self-efficacy, self-esteem, acculturation and HIV knowledge as correlates of unprotected anal intercourse among 514 HIV-negative Hispanic women, 18 to 59 years of age, residing in one urban county in southern Florida. In both unadjusted and adjusted results, the likelihood of engaging in unprotected anal intercourse was associated with food insecurity in the past 30 days (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.57, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.03, 2.40) and more interpersonal power attributed to the male partner (AOR = 1.63, 95%CI 1.08, 2.45). Not significant, yet of possible importance, were ever having engaged in exchange sex (AOR = 1.96, 95%CI = 0.97, 3.98) and lower HIV knowledge (AOR = 0.80, 95%CI = 0.63, 1.01). Interventions aimed at reducing heterosexual unprotected anal intercourse risk for HIV infection among Hispanic women may benefit by addressing socioeconomic and interpersonal issues, and assessing HIV knowledge and comprehension. This article presents key findings from the 2012 HIV prevalence, incidence and behaviour survey conducted in South Africa and explores trends in the HIV epidemic. A representative household based survey collected behavioural and biomedical data among people of all ages. Chi-squared test for association and formal trend tests (2002, 2005, 2008 and 2012) were used to test for associations and trends in the HIV epidemic across the four surveys. In 2012 a total of 38 431 respondents were interviewed from 11 079 households; 28 997 (67.5%) of 42 950 eligible individuals provided blood specimens. HIV prevalence was 12.2% [95% CI: 11.4–13.1] in 2012 with prevalence higher among females 14.4% than males 9.9%. Adults aged 25–49 years were most affected, 25.2% [95% CI: 23.2–27.3]. HIV prevalence increased from 10.6% [95%CI: 9.8–11.6] in 2008 to 12.2% [95% CI: 11.4–13.1] in 2012 (p< 0.001). Antiretroviral treatment (ART) exposure doubled from 16.6% in 2008 to 31.2% in 2012 (p< 0.001). HIV incidence in 2012 among persons 2 years and older was 1.07% [95% CI: 0.87–1.27], with the highest incidence among Black African females aged 20–34 years at 4.5%. Sexual debut before 15 years was reported by 10.7% of respondents aged 15–24 years, and was significantly higher among male youth than female (16.7% vs. 5.0% respectively,p< 0.001). Reporting of multiple sexual partners in the previous 12 months increased from 11.5% in 2002 to 18.3% in 2012 (p< 0.001). Condom use at last sex dropped from 45.1% in 2008 to 36.2% in 2012 (p< 0.001). Levels of accurate HIV knowledge about transmission and prevention were low and had decreased between 2008 and 2012 from 31.5% to 26.8%. South Africa is on the right track with scaling up ART. However, there have been worrying increases in most HIV-related risk behaviours. These findings suggest that there is a need to scale up prevention methods that integrate biomedical, behavioural, social and structural prevention interventions to reverse the tide in the fight against HIV. Objectives: Risky sexual behavior increases during college. HIV knowledge and risk perception have been inconsistent predictors of risky sex independently. Methods: This study tested the interaction between HIV knowledge, risk perception, and sex to predict risky sex in college students (N = 171; 52.0% female). Results: Women's HIV knowledge resulted in greater reports of risky sex when risk perception was low. Conversely, men's HIV knowledge translated into greater reports of risky sex when risk perception was high. The study investigated HIV testing prevalence and factors associated with the utilization of voluntary HIV counselling and testing (VCT) services among individuals with disabilities in Addis Ababa. The analysis was based on a survey of 209 men and 203 women with disabilities, aged 15–49, who had ever heard about HIV and AIDS in four sub-cities in Addis Ababa. HIV testing prevalence was 53.2%, with no significant difference between males and females. Comprehensive HIV knowledge, living with spouse, and religious affiliations positively predicted utilization of VCT services among participants. Living with both parents and having physical or mental/intellectual disabilities were negative predictors of VCT services utilization. Introduction: HIV voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) comprise an effective preventive measure and an entry point to care and support services. We sought to assess VCT uptake and HIV-related knowledge and perceived risk among female sex workers (FSWs) in five provinces of the Mekong Delta region. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out in 1998 FSWs, including both street-based sex workers (SSWs) and entertainment-based sex workers (ESWs). Results: High proportions of FSWs were aware that using condoms (94.6%), and clean needles (34.1%) are preventive measures that reduce the risk of HIV transmission. Some FSWs reported avoiding public toilet use (8.6%), physical contacts (16.1%), or sharing meals (10.9%) with people living with HIV/AIDS, and preventing mosquito bites (20.8%). Twenty-nine percent (29.0%) of FSWs perceived themselves as being at risk of HIV infection. Only 32.7% had ever tested for HIV, of whom 54% were voluntary for testing. FSWs who ever injected drugs (OR=0.03, p=0.05), had drug-injecting clients (OR=0.07, p <0.01), and had inconsistent condom use with husbands or lovers (OR=0.10, p=0.01) were less likely to have a voluntary test. Inconsistent condom use with clients (OR=13.86, p <0.01), and receiving HIV information from radio (OR=13.28, p <0.05) and communication campaigns (OR=6.69, p <0.05), increased the likelihood of VCT uptake. Conclusion: Inadequate knowledge and some misconceptions about HIV transmission routes and preventive measures, low perceived risk of HIV infection, and low VCT uptake were observed among FSWs in the Mekong Delta region. Interventions to improve their knowledge and self-efficacy, reduce risky behaviors, and encourage VCT uptake and early access to health care services are necessary to prevent HIV transmission in this region. There is little information about HIV awareness or condom use among female sex workers (FSWs) in Afghanistan. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to assess HIV awareness, knowledge, and condom use among FSWs in three Afghan cities. FSWs residing in Jalalabad, Kabul, and Mazar-i-Sharif were recruited through outreach programs and completed an interviewer-administered questionnaire and rapid tests for hepatitis B surface antigen, HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis C virus. Logistic regression identified factors associated with HIV awareness, comprehensive HIV knowledge (knowledge that HIV cannot be detected by sight, that condoms prevent HIV, and rejection of local misconceptions about HIV transmission), and consistent condom use (use with every sex act) with clients in the last six months. Of 520 participants, 76.9% had no formal education and 37.7% lived outside Afghanistan in the last five years. Nearly half (44.2%) were aware of HIV but, of these, only 17.4% (N=40) had comprehensive HIV knowledge. There were significant differences by site; FSWs in Jalalabad were more likely to be aware of HIV but FSWs in Kabul were more likely to have correct HIV knowledge and use condoms consistently with clients. Consistent client condom use was reported by 11.5% (N=60) and was independently associated with having more clients per month (AOR=1.99, 95% CI: 1.04-3.81). In conclusion, comprehensive HIV knowledge and consistent condom use with clients are low among Afghan FSWs in these cities. An important step in preventing mother-to-child transmission is testing pregnant women for HIV. Health literacy measures, such as HIV knowledge and risk perception, may determine which women are tested in prenatal clinics where routine opt-out testing is not available. A survey was conducted in Guayaquil, Ecuador in 2006 (n=485), where approximately 0.7% of HIV tests in prenatal clinics were positive. Pregnant women over the age of 18 were invited to complete the survey in the waiting rooms at four city hospitals. There were 67.2% of women reported being tested previously for HIV. The most notable finding was that women who perceived a risk were 1.74 times more likely to request testing (p=0.021), but a woman's risk perception was not related to established risk factors. In addition, a physician's recommendation would result in the testing of nearly all women (94.3%). This data suggest that interventions in prenatal care clinics should incorporate educational strategies to increase accurate perception of personal risk. HIV/AIDS-related stigma threatens to undermine interventions to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS. To address stigma in a South African community, a thorough understanding of the nature of stigma in the specific cultural context is needed. The goals of this research were to assess the level of stigmatising attitudes among members of a community, compare this to the level of stigma that is perceived to exist within the community and determine to what extent stigmatising attitudes are affected by socio-demographic characteristics, HIV-related experience and cultural beliefs. A questionnaire was completed by 1077 respondents in key areas in two communities in Tshwane, South Africa. The questionnaire included an assessment of HIV-related experience, HIV-knowledge, personal stigma and perceptions of stigma within the community. The findings indicate that the level of personal stigma was significantly lower than that perceived to be present in the community. Respondents who were more stigmatising were older, male, less educated and less knowledgeable about HIV. They were less likely to know someone with HIV and had more traditional cultural viewpoints. While socio-demographic and cultural factors are difficult to change, efforts aimed at increasing people's knowledge and experience of the epidemic occurring in their community could change the level of stigmatising attitudes within their community. Objective and Participants The authors compared nontraditional college students' knowledge and perceptions of HIV/AIDS and sexual practices with previously reported results about traditional students. Methods Nontraditional students completed an online survey with questions based on national HIV/AIDS surveys. Traditional students completed the same survey with paper and pencil. Results Overall, the authors found more similarities than differences between the 2 groups. The findings support previous research that suggests that although college students are knowledgeable about HIV and its risks, they express little personal concern about becoming infected. The authors also discuss how apparent differences between nontraditional and traditional students regarding personal concern about becoming infected, relationship status, and information sources may influence the development of effective prevention strategies geared toward nontraditional college students. Conclusions Institutional leaders need to adapt to these differences, and researchers should undertake additional studies to clarify these differences so that college students may be more effectively educated about HIV/AIDS and encouraged to get tested. Primary education in Vietnam is free and compulsory for five years. The majority of school-aged children continue into lower secondary school, but significant numbers drop out. This study investigated the health and social situation of adolescents aged 11-16 years (between primary education and legal employment age) to compare the situation of adolescents in school with those working, including possible gender differences. The data were collected by questionnaire on a randomly selected sample of adolescents, aged 11-16 years, living in Hanoi. A total of 1547 adolescents were interviewed. Adolescents from Hanoi were healthy, continuing their education, lived with parents, and only a few reported behaviour detrimental to their health. They knew about HIV, but their knowledge about prevention was poor. The working adolescents had moved to Hanoi to earn an income. The girls were staying mainly with relatives, while the boys lived with employers or in rented rooms. Very few were homeless and these were exposed to more risks to their health due to a more risky lifestyle and less knowledge about HIV prevention. For urban adolescents, their right to education, basic health and to be cared for by their parents was fulfilled. More of the rural adolescents had left school early, were responsible for their own daily life and were exposed to greater risks and a more risky lifestyle. In this study, the authors confirm and expand previous findings (M. Anastasi, R. G. Sawyer, & P. J. Pinciaro, 1999; J. E. Lewis & R. M. Malow, 1997) concerning college students' knowledge and perceptions about HIV/AIDS. Although students are knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS, they have little personal concern about becoming infected and do not take appropriate safe sex precautions. Findings of the present study show that gender, ethnic background, and knowing someone infected by HIV/AIDS influence students' level of concern about infection. In addition, older students and those who know someone infected by HIV/AIDS are more likely to have been tested. Ameta-analysis of worldwide Needle Exchange Program research was conducted with fourteen studies, looking at the impact of needle exchange programs (NEPs) on the sexual risk behaviors and HIV/disease knowledge of injection drug users. Based on the limited Kate Ksobiech, PhD, Urban Studies Program, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, data available to date (a total of 14 studies), two conclusions were drawn. First, HIV/disease knowledge does increase with NEP attendance. Second, risky sexual behaviors do not appear to decrease with NEP attendance, and may in fact increase. Neither of these areas has been investigated nearly as often as risky drug behaviors among NEP attenders. Focusing on disease knowledge and reducing risky sexual behaviors of NEP clients are both key areas for AIDS Service Organization staff to consider when developing HIV risk reduction interventions for injection drug users (IDUs).
