AbstractPanax notoginseng (Burk.) F.H. Chen (P. notoginseng), a precious medicinal herb, provides both considerable values. There is confusion in the market regarding the geographical origins of P. notoginseng. It is of paramount importance to authenticate geographical origins of P. notoginseng, which will facilitate the rational utilization of resources and sustainable development. Principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were employed to investigate the influence of the tissue and data fusion strategy for the authentication of P. notoginseng origins. The PLS-DA model employing the main root spectra demonstrated great potential for authenticating P. notoginseng origin. The PLS-DA training and test sets based on feature-level fusion (VIP) spectral data were 100% accurate, indicating excellent potential in authenticating P. notoginseng. The data fusion strategy improved the authentication. AbstractThe distinctive pharmacological characteristics of Chinese medicinal herbs are rendering them increasingly popular as functional foods. However, fresh herbs are prone to mold and decay. Currently, drying processing is primarily employed to extend the storage time and effectively preserve the bioactive constituents of these herbs. After examining of the recent literatures on drying Chinese medicinal herbs, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of various drying technologies, including shade drying, hot air drying, solar drying, heat pump drying, microwave drying, far-infrared drying, vacuum drying, vacuum freeze drying, radio frequency drying, high voltage electric field drying and some combined techniques. While, an extensive illustration for each drying method principles, advantages/disadvantages, potential improvements and deep investigation of its energetic performance and the influence on the main active components in the drying process, such as polysaccharides, polyphenols, flavonoids, saponins, volatile oils, were summarized. The results showed that the combined drying technology not only had high efficiency and low energy consumption, but also preserved the bioactive medicinal components and sensory quality at the best. To develop a nuanced understanding of women's health on social media, we conducted a content analysis of Twitter data in early 2020, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Included tweets (N = 1,714) fell into 15 overarching themes. "Politics and Women's Health" was most discussed, demonstrating the politicization of women's health, followed by "Maternal, Reproductive, and Sexual Health." COVID-19 was a crosscutting issue for 12 themes, suggesting widespread effects on women's health. Overall, diverse conversations unfolded on social media, including variation geographically, highlighting the need for a more expansive and inclusive definition of women's health. Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill), a member of the Apiaceae family (Umbelliferaceae), is a hardy and perennial herb, with grooved stems, intermittent leaves, petiole with sheath, usually bisexual flower and yellow umbrella. Although fennel is a typical aromatic plant generally considered native to the Mediterranean shores, it has become widespread in many regions of the world and has long been used as a medicinal and culinary herb. The aim of this review is to collect recent information from the literature on the chemical composition, functional properties and toxicology of fennel. Collected data show the efficacy of this plant in various in vitro and in vivo pharmacological studies including antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, antinociceptive, hepatoprotective, bronchodilatory, and memory enhancing activities. It has also been shown to be effective on infantile colic, dysmenorrhea, polycystic ovarian syndrome and milk production. Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a potentially fatal neurological disease with severe complications and a high disability rate. An increasing number of animal experimental studies support the therapeutic effect of quercetin, which is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant bioflavonoid. This paper reviewed the therapeutic effect of quercetin on a rat SCI model and summarized the relevant mechanistic research. PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Science Direct, WanFang Data, SinoMed databases, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and the Vip Journal Integration Platform were searched from their inception to April 2023 for animal experiments applying quercetin to treat SCI. Based on the PICOS criteria, a total of 18 eligible studies were included, of which 14 were high quality. In this study, there was a gradual increase in effect based on the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) score after three days (p < 0.0001). Furthermore, gender differences also appeared in the efficacy of quercetin; males performed better than females (p = 0.008). Quercetin was also associated with improved inclined plane test score (p = 0.008). In terms of biochemical indicators, meta-analysis showed that MDA (p < 0.0001) and MPO (p = 0.0002) were significantly reduced after quercetin administration compared with the control group, and SOD levels were increased (p = 0.004). Mechanistically, quercetin facilitates the inhibition of oxidative stress, inflammation, autophagy and apoptosis that occur after SCI. Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the presence of neurodegenerative lesions and cognitive impairment. In this study, a series of novel palmatine derivatives were designed and synthesized through the introduction of a heteroatom using carbodiimide-mediated condensation. The synthesized compounds were then screened for toxicity and potency, leading to the identification of compound 2q, which exhibited low toxicity and high potency. Many rural people in developing countries rely on herbal remedies, but these derive from plants which may be subject to heavy metal pollutants. Lead, cadmium and arsenic are confirmed carcinogens and may produce toxic effects if present above the recommended levels in medicinal herbs. The study assessed the uptake and associated health risk of Pb, Cd and As by Euphorbia prostrata exposed to different contaminating sources. The levels of Pb were within safe limits of the World Health Organization both in soil (200 mg/kg) and plant (10 mg/kg). Cadmium concentration in soil from all sites exceeded the allowable range (0.6 mg/kg), exceeding the safe permissible limit of 0.3 mg/kg in plants growing in contaminated sites. The concern about the quality of medicinal herbs is becoming important due to the poor quality of commercial products like cosmetics, functional foods, and natural medicine produced from them. However, there is a lack of modern analytical methods to evaluate the constituents of P. macrophyllus until the moment. This paper reports an analytical method based on UHPLC-DAD and UHPLC-MS/MS MRM methods to evaluate the ethanolic extracts of P. macrophyllus leaves and twigs. 15 main constituents were identified using a UHPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS profiling. Subsequently, a reliable analytical method was established and successfully used to quantitate the constituent's content using four marker compounds in leaf and twig extracts of this plant. The result obtained from the current study demonstrated the secondary metabolites and the variety of their derivatives in this plant. AbstractAnisomeles malabarica, the commonly called “Malabar catmint” is a wild tropical plant belonging to the family Lamiaceae. Traditionally this plant is used as mosquito repellent, snakebite antidote and to treat fever and gastrointestinal discomfort by the people of South India. It is an important endemic plant used in the indigenous medicine systems of India such as Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani in various formulations. The rich phytochemistry of A. malabarica includes cembrane terpenes, flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids, flavones, glycosides, and other bioactive compounds contributing for its medicinal potential. Extracts and metabolites of A. malabarica shows wide range of significant pharmacological effects in combating cancer cells through apoptosis, inhibiting viral agents (HPV and SARS-CoV-2), immune regulation, and DNA protection. The phytocompounds of A. malabarica were also reported for anti-malarial, anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, anti-epileptic, anti-diabetic, anti-parasitic activity, and hepatoprotective properties. This systematic review summarizes the therapeutic properties with botanical characteristics, ethnobotany, and phytochemistry of A. malabarica. It also documents the ingrained traditional use of A. malabarica in religious custom in southern states of India. Therefore further exploration of this promising medicinal herb for its metabolites and ethnobotanical records would possibly support the development of modern medicine systems and provides insights for future research. Premenstrual syndrome is a common disorder in women of reproductive age characterized by a variety of cyclical symptoms with a great impact on their lifestyle. Available pharmacological options include both antidepressants and oral contraceptives, both of which have side effects, are expensive and not always effective. Vitamins, minerals and plant extracts have been proven to alleviate the symptomatology of the premenstrual syndrome. For this reason, the purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a commercial phytotherapeutic dietary supplement (PREMEN-CALM®: γ-aminobutyric acid, Rhodiola rosea L., Vitex agnus-castus, vitamin B6 and melatonin) as an alternative treatment for this condition. A randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled pilot study was performed. Participants (n = 42) were assessed before and after 3 months of taking the supplement (n = 21) or the placebo (n = 21). Outcome measures include antioxidant and inflammatory biomarkers, body composition, subjective sleep quality, mood state profile, quality of life, and certain characteristics of the menstrual cycle. The within-group analysis revealed a significant improvement in the total antioxidant status (1.49 ± 0.34 vs reference value 1, p = 0.002), mood state profile (p = 0.02), and affective symptoms (p = 0.01) in the women receiving the commercial phytotherapeutic dietary supplement PREMEN-CALM®. On the contrary, the between-group analysis showed no statistical differences, suggesting a plausible placebo effect. The phytotherapeutic supplement PREMEN-CALM® might be effective in treating or alleviating the symptoms of the premenstrual syndrome without adverse events. A new triterpenoid saponin (1), along with five known compounds (2–6), was isolated from Bupleurum marginatum Wall. ex DC, of which compounds 2–4 were obtained for the first time from this plant. The structures were confirmed by the analysis of 1D, 2D NMR, and HR-ESIMS data, and comparison with previous spectral data. Two previously undescribed iridoid glycosides, 6'-O-trans-feruloyl-(4S,6R)-3,4-dihydro-3β-ethoxypaederoside (1) and 6'-O-trans-caffeoyl-(4S,6R)-3,4-dihydro-2'-O-3α-paederoside (2), were isolated from the 90% EtOH extract of the air dried aerial parts of Paederia Foetida. Structural elucidation of all the compounds was performed by spectral methods such as 1D and 2D (1H-1H COSY, HMQC, and HMBC) NMR spectroscopy. The two isolated iridoid glycosides were tested in vivo for their antinociceptive properties. A new seco-A tirucallane triterpenoid named excelxylin A (1), along with two known seco-A triterpenoids (2–3), were isolated from the n-hexane extract of Dysoxylum excelsum (Spreng.) Blume ex G.Don stem bark. The structure and stereochemistry configuration of compounds 1–3 was established by NMR, IR, and HR-ESI-MS spectroscopic data analyses and comparison of their NMR data with literatures. The compounds exhibited the carbon framework for seco-A ring tirucallane triterpenoid, first reported in the Dysoxylum genus. Two new iridoid glycosides, piasezkiiosides A (1) and B (2), were isolated from aqueous extract of the whole plant of Rehmannia piasezkii. Their structures were established from the spectroscopic data, chemical transformation, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The subspecies Abrus pulchellus subsp. mollis exhibits pharmacological properties akin to the traditional Chinese medicinal plant Abri Herba (A. pulchellus subsp. cantoniensis (Hance) Verdc.). In this report, we unveil the plastid genome of A. pulchellus subsp. mollis. The genome spans 156,322 base pairs (bp), comprising a large single-copy (LSC) region of 86,633 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,219 bp, and two distinct inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 25,735 bp each. Annotation process cataloged a total of 111 genes within this genome, including 77 protein-coding genes, 30 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and four ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. The overall guanine-cytosine (GC) content of the plastome is 35.5%. Phylogenetic analysis utilizing maximum-likelihood (ML) based on 16 complete plastid genomes reveals a close clustering of three Abrus taxa, namely A. pulchellus subsp. mollis, A. pulchellus subsp. cantoniensis, and A. precatorius. Notably, A. pulchellus subsp. cantoniensis clusters with A. precatorius as a sister group, distinct from A. pulchellus subsp. mollis. These findings highlight significant differences between the plastid genomes of the two subspecies, laying the foundation for future research on the identification of medicinal herbs and germplasm resources related to these subspecies. Lonicera japonica is a commonly used Chinese herbal medicine, but few studies have focused on its pesticide residues. In this study, a quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, safe (QuEChERS) pretreatment combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was established to determine 16 pesticides in L. japonica. Various factors including the type and volume of extraction solvent, times of ultrasound-assisted extraction, and type and weight of purifying agents were optimized. The established method showed good linearity with correlation coefficient (r) > 0.99 within the range of 0.01–5.0 mg·L−1, and average recoveries (AR) were 82.3%-102.5% at spiking levels of 0.01, 0.1, and 0.5 mg·kg−1 with relative standard deviations (RSD) of 0.43%-4.75%. Only bifenthrin and fenvalerate can be detected with maximum detected concentrations of 1.41 and 0.13 mg·kg−1. Synephrine is widely found in Chinese herbs of the Rutaceae family and is commonly used as a primary substitute for ephedrine in sports supplements. However, its potential cardiotoxicity has necessitated governmental regulations regarding its use. This study determined the contents of synephrine, phenylephrine, and caffeine in 30 Chinese herbal preparations (including five single herbs) and 16 supplements promoted for weight loss. The presence of naturally occurring synephrine was detected in all Chinese herbal medicines, with immature bitter orange having the highest synephrine content (ranging from 233.1 to 505.3 mg/100 g). This was followed by three herbs with comparable amounts of up to 317.7 mg/100 g, namely bitter orange, red tangerine exocarp, and tangerine peel. Euodia fruit had the lowest synephrine content, measuring up to 4.9 mg/100 g. None of these herbal medicines were found to contain detectable phenylephrine. On the other hand, weight-loss supplements, comprising complex combinations of herbal extracts, were found to contain synephrine in concentrations up to 1159.0 mg/100 g and caffeine up to 1659.1 mg/100 g. The synephrine content of these products did not exceed the regulatory limit of six percent, nor did they surpass the respective daily consumption of 20 mg. However, one product was found to contain both synephrine and caffeine, albeit at low concentrations, which could potentially breach the regulation prohibiting the combined use of bitter orange and caffeine as food ingredients. Postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy could improve the life quality of patients with breast cancer but also bring side effects and cause adverse reactions. Yiqi Yangyin decoction has been reported to possess anti-cancer activity and has been employed in the postoperative treatment of various cancers. A total of 128 patients with breast cancer who received surgical therapy were enrolled in this study and were randomly grouped as the control and the test group to receive different therapies. Patients in the control group received single chemotherapy of fluorouracil and hydrochloride, while the therapy of the test group patients supplemented Yiqi Yangyin decoction based on the control group. Both two therapeutic strategies improved life quality and TCM syndrome scores of enrolled patients, and the supplement of Yiqi Yangyin decoction significantly improved the therapeutic effect. Adverse reactions including nausea, vomiting, thrombocytopenia, diarrhea, leukopenia, and hemoglobinia occurred in both two groups, but the application of Yiqi Yangyin decoction significantly alleviated adverse reactions. Additionally, patients in the test group showed a better 1-year disease-free survival. The combination of adjuvant chemotherapy with Yiqi Yangyin decoction could improve postoperative life quality, improve therapeutic efficacy, and reduce adverse reactions in patients with breast cancer. Bamboo leaf extract (BLE) is a pale brown powder extracted from bamboo leaves, and it is listed in the Chinese Standard GB-2760 as a legal and safe food additive. The present study aims to identify and characterize the major flavonoids in BLE. The identification of major flavonoids was carried out using ultra performance liquid chromatography combined with electrospray ionization quadruple time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC/ESI-QTOF-MS/MS). A total of 31 flavonoid compounds were identified and tentatively characterized base on reference standards and MS dissociation mechanisms. A new compound, named coniferin B (1), and fourteen known compounds were purified and identified from the leaves and branches of Wikstroemia chamaedaphne Meisn. Their chemical structures were elucidated through analyzing spectroscopic and HRESIMS data. Compounds 2, 3, 5, 7–9, 11, and 13 were isolated from this plant for the first time. All compounds were assayed for cytotoxicity and activation of latent HIV activity on NH2 cells. The results showed that all compounds did not produce cytotoxicity at 10.0 μM and compounds 1, 9–11 showed weak activating activity with activation folds of 4.88, 7.14, 5.3, and 6.97, respectively. In the current study, bioinformatics analysis of the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) dataset was conducted with the hepatoprotective effect of the Fuzheng Huayu (FZHY) capsule against the diethylnitrosamine-induced HCC progression analyzed. Eight cell clusters were defined and tanshinone IIA, arachidonic acid, and quercetin, compounds of the FZHY capsule, inhibit HCC progression-related fibrosis by regulating the expression of PLAU and IGFBP3. Combined with the ameliorative effect of the FZHY capsule against liver dysfunctions and expression of PLAU and IGFBP3, our study confirmed the effect of the FZHY capsule on inhibiting the fibrosis-associated HCC progression via regulating the expression of PLAU and IGFBP3. A lab-on-a-tip (LOT) has been constructed as a sensing platform for the detection of lead using a disposable pipette tip. The LOT has been constructed with optical fiber spectroscopy where the inside wall of a pipette tip is modified with a polymeric inclusion membrane (PIM) immobilized with dithizone as a chemical sensor for Pb(II) in herbal samples. Under optimal conditions, the LOT determined Pb(II) across a linear concentration range from 1.9 to 20 mg/L with a detection limit of 0.621 mg/L. The traditional apprenticeship system and modern educational models both contribute to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) education in unique ways. This study aims to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of these approaches and investigates their potential integration for optimal TCM teaching. The study employs a comprehensive literature search strategy with specific keywords through Boolean Operators, focusing on articles discussing TCM education, sourced from the databases PubMed, Scopus, and CNKI. For comparative analysis, the study analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of three distinct approaches—traditional, modern, and hybrid—in TCM education. Finally, we use a spider plot methodology to visually evaluate across 11 critical educational aspects for these approaches. A comprehensive review of 70 articles on TCM education highlights the value of both conventional and modern approaches. Conventional methods often emphasize teacher-centered clinical training that aligns well with the apprenticeship model, serving to bridge formal academic learning with hands-on experience. Modern methods incorporate elements like technology and formal accreditation but caution that the absence of traditional apprenticeship could dilute core TCM principles. One recurring theme across multiple studies is the enduring importance of apprenticeship—a pedagogical cornerstone rooted in TCM's historical and cultural context—as well as its tension with modern methodologies that incorporate online resources and scientific frameworks. An integrated approach attempts to harmonize these strengths but reveals a gap in interactivity, suggesting that incorporating apprenticeship could offer a practical, hands-on method to improve student engagement. Conventional methods in TCM education emphasize teacher-centered clinical training akin to apprenticeship, modern methods incorporate technological advances and formal accreditation; however, the absence of traditional apprenticeship could compromise core TCM principles, and an integrated model, though striving to harmonize these elements, still falls short in the area of student interactivity. A new flavonolignan, sonyamandin (1), along with other known compounds was isolated from the aerial parts and seeds extracts of Silybum marianum (milk thistle) collected from Jordan. The known ones are ursolic acid (2), oleanolic acid (3), maslinic acid (4), oleic acid (5), β-sitosterol (6), β-, sitosteryl glucoside (7), apigenin (8), kaempferol-3-O-rhamnoside (9), apigenin-7-O-β-D-glycoside (10), isosylibin A (11), isosylibin B (12), and silybin B (13). Herbal products comprise a wide spectrum of locally, nationally or internationally commercialized commodities. As these products have an increasingly important position in healthcare systems worldwide, a detailed product quality assessment is of crucial importance. For the quality evaluation of commercial herbal products, a wide range of methods were used, from simpler, quicker, and cost-effective HPTLC, to hyphenated methods with MS or NMR, where more precise quantification or specific structural information is required. Additionally, most of the methods have been coupled with chemometric tools, such as PCA, or PDA, for the multivariate analysis of the high amount of data generated by chromatograms, electropherograms or spectra. The chemical methods have revealed the widespread presence of low or variable quality herbal products in the marketplace. The majority of analytical investigations present major, qualitative and quantitative, inter-product variations of their chemical composition, ranging from missing ingredients, to strikingly and unnaturally high concentrations of some compounds. Moreover, the inter-batch quality variations were frequently reported, as well as the presence of some undesirable substances. PAHs are pervasive pollutants known to bioaccumulate in environmental matrices, plants, and humans. Dr. Iguedo Goko Cleanser® is a polyherbal drug with unsubstantiated claims to treat various diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. PAHs were measured following EPA-16 PAHs guidelines using Gas Chromatography (Agilent-6890N, USA). The drug’s exposure-associated public health concerns was determined using suitable mathematical paradigms. PAHs present were acenaphthene (2.74 × 10−2), pyrene (2.7598 × 10−2), and chrysene (5.1277 × 10−2) ppm. Dietary intake of chrysene, acenaphthene and pyrene for adults, and children ranged from 2.466–4.615 × 10−3 and 1.215–2.308 × 10−3 ppm/mg/kg, respectively. B[α]Peq, EDB[α]Peq, and incremental lifetime cancer risk were determined to be 5.6777 × 10−4, 5.109912 × 10−5 and 5.3289 × 10−12, respectively. Our results suggest a high risk of non-carcinogenic adverse health effects, especially on chronic exposure among adolescents and adults, necessitating caution and/or avoidance of its chronic use. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prominent etiological factor for liver cirrhosis worldwide. It is frequently associated with obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) supplementation in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who have NAFLD. In a two-arm, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, seventy-six patients diagnosed with both T2DM and NAFLD were randomly assigned to receive either ginger powder capsules (1000 mg, twice daily) or placebo capsules (administered in the same manner) for a period of three months. Anthropometric measurements, blood pressure readings, biochemical profiles, and imaging parameters were assessed before and after the intervention. Safety measures were also evaluated. In both the ginger and placebo groups, there was a significant reduction in mean body mass index (BMI), waist and hip circumferences, as well as liver transaminase levels. Moreover, significant improvements in mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures were observed in the ginger group (p = 0.02 and < 0.0001, respectively). Within the ginger group, there was a decrease in serum insulin levels and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (p = 0.002 and 0.004, respectively). Furthermore, the ginger group exhibited an improvement in serum HDL-cholesterol level (p = 0.01). However, there were no significant changes in the assessed inflammatory markers or the indices obtained from fibroscan imaging, including steatosis percent and controlled attenuation parameter. This study demonstrates that ginger supplementation can significantly improve mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures. However, it does not have a significant impact on inflammatory markers or fibroscan imaging indices. Nonetheless, the three-month use of ginger improves serum insulin level, insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and HDL-cholesterol level compared to baseline values. Cynomorium songaricum is a commonly used medicinal and culinary plant renowned for its effects in tonifying kidney yang, as well as nourishing essence and blood. Consequently, it has garnered considerable attention within the fields of pharmacology and chemistry. However, given the distinct geographical distribution of C. songaricum resources, establishing an accurate analytical method to differentiate its origin becomes indispensable in ensuring its quality and efficacy. In this study, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was utilized to obtain comprehensive information on the chemical composition of C. songaricum samples from various regions and establish HPLC fingerprints. Through chemometrics analysis, essential chemical markers for classifying them were successfully identified. Additionally, the Kruskal–Wallis rank sum test was employed to evaluate differences in the content of intrinsic constituents of C. songaricum from different origins. The results demonstrated that C. songaricum samples from Neimenggu, Gansu, and Xinjiang could be accurately classified, highlighting the significance of chemical markers in assessing the quality of C. songaricum. Uncaria rhynchophylla (Miq.) Jacks (Gouteng in Chinese, UR), a common herbal medicine, is chosen for treating cerebral diseases such as convulsions, hypertension, epilepsy, and eclampsia. However, comprehensive research on the chemical components of UR and its absorbed components has not been revealed. To develop an integrative UP LC-Q-TOF-MS and multivariate data processing approach for determining the chemical constituents of UR and its absorbed constituents in rat serum after oral adminstration. A UP LC-Q-TOF-MS equipped with a Waters UP LCT M HSS T3 was applied for sample seperation. P CA and OP LS-DA were applied to extract differential variables. Based on the self-built databases combined with mass spectrometry cleavage patterns and reference standards, the components structural identification were carried out. In total, 40 compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids were identified in UR. Amongst them, 26 prototype constituents were found in rat serum, which might be the potential active constituents.The identified constituents absorbed in blood could be the effective constituents. This work provided a solid experimental data for further research on the pharmacological substance basis and demonstrated the practicability of the UP LC-Q-TOF-MS for chemical constituents structural elucidation from herbal medicines. New dammarane-type triterpenoid saponin, named 22(R)-notoginsenoside Ab1 (1), together with thirteen known dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins (2-14) was isolated from the EtOH extract of black ginseng and their structures were elucidated on the basis of one- and two-dimensional NMR (including 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, HSQC, HMBC, ROESY) and calculated ECD. Among them, compounds 1-2 and 6-8 were isolated for the first time from ginseng and black ginseng. Acalypha australis L. 1753 is a potherb popular among Asian populations and is a traditional herbal medicine. In the current study, the overall genetic diversity of A. australis still needs to be better. Here, we assembled and characterized the complete plastome of A. australis. The plastome is 168,885 bp in length with a large single-copy (LSC) of 94,576 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) of 19,715 bp, and two copies of inverted repeat region (IRs) of 27,297 bp each. The overall GC content is 34.9%. The plastome contains 127 genes, including 83 protein-coding genes, 36 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenomic analysis of the representative species of Euphorbiaceae showed that A. australis and A. hispida formed a monophyletic sister clade. The results of this study will support further research on the evolution and conservation of the Euphorbiaceae species; they will benefit pharmaceutical applications and ornamentation of the medicinal plant A. australis. The genus Phagnalon Cass., included in the Asteraceae family, has a wide distribution, expanding from Macaronesia in the West to the Himalayas in the East, from South France and Nord Italy to Ethiopia and Arabian Peninsula. Various species of Phagnalon have been used in the popular medicine of several countries as medicinal herbs and food. The extracts and the secondary metabolites, have a varied application spectrum at several biological levels, with antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, antitumor, etc. properties having been reported. The essential oils of four taxa, Phagnalon rupestre, Phagnalon saxatile var. viride, and Phagnalon rupestre subsp. illyricum var. metlesicsii collected in Sicily (Italy), never previously investigated, and of Phagnalon graecum collected in Greece, were analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Traditional Chinese Medicine has a long history in ophthalmology in China. Over 250 kinds of Traditional Chinese Medicine have been recorded in ancient books for the management of eye diseases, which may provide an alternative or supplement to current ocular therapies. However, the core holistic philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine that makes it attractive can also hinder its understanding from a scientific perspective – in particular, determining true cause and effect. This review focused on how Traditional Chinese Medicine could be applied to two prevalent ocular diseases, glaucoma, and cataract. The literature on preclinical and clinical studies in both English and Chinese on the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat these two diseases was reviewed. The pharmacological effects, safety profile, and drug-herb interaction of selected herbal formulas were also investigated. The hybrid solar smart dryer (HSSD) was established to dry medicinal and aromatic herbs that are sensitive to direct sunlight. This study explores the effectiveness of the HSSD as an indirect solar drying technique in drying lemongrass, thyme, marjoram, and lavender at different temperatures (30, 40, and 50 ± 2 °C), focusing on its ability to retain quality features. The total energy consumption was estimated by values of 27.72 kWh for lemongrass and 43.02 kWh for lavender using HSSD at 50 ± 2 °C. Generally, HSSD showed an improvement in the studied physicochemical quality parameters. The green color retention was with the parameters of 15.60 ± 0.89, −5.28 ± 1.92, −3.89 ± 1.86, and −5.89 ± 2.40 for lemongrass, thyme, marjoram, and lavender samples, respectively. The highest values of the lemon grass, thyme, marjoram, and lavender oil content (1.96, 1.73, 3.40, and 2.76%, respectively) were obtained when the aromatic herbs were dried using the HSSD at 40 °C. This study showcased the effectiveness of solar dryers in preserving the physicochemical properties of lemongrass, thyme, marjoram, and lavender during drying, which could be applied to other food products. People seek complementary health approaches (CHAs) for a variety of health reasons, and high rates of CHA use among U.S. college students have been reported. Based on a 2012 study, researchers assessed trends in college CHA use by conducting an updated systematic review of studies published between June 2011–December 2022. For eight studies that met inclusion/exclusion criteria, weighted means were used to report CHA use, and changes in CHA use between two time points (2012 and 2023) were determined using Chi-square and Pearson's r. Overall CHA use in the past 12 months was 69.7%, and the most commonly used CHAs were NVNM/herbal medicine (55.8%), relaxation techniques (53%), supplements (42.3%), and yoga (37%). Statistically significant (p <.01) increases were shown for NVNM/herbal medicine (+25.2%, r = 0.23), yoga (+19.3%, r = 0.19), and meditation (+10.8%, r = 0.10). Use of megavitamins significantly (p <.01) decreased by 19% (r = 0.20), compared to 2012 data. Future research on college student CHA use needs to be comprehensive and consistent. This study investigated phenolic metabolites, antioxidant, cytotoxic and cardioprotective effects of the hydroalcoholic extract from the aerial parts of Hypericum attenuatum Fisch. ex Choisy. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the extract were 132.40 ± 2.06 mg GAE/g and 101.46 ± 1.47 mg QE/g respectively. The extract exhibited antioxidant activities with an EC50 value against DPPH radical of 0.099 ± 0.03 mg/mL and a FRAP value of 1.22 ± 0.086 mmol/L Fe2+. The extract could protect H9c2 cardiomyoblasts from the injury of H2O2, while it restored the H9c2 cell viability to 82.69 ± 2.33% at 100 μg/mL. The extract possessed cytotoxicity on MGC803, C666-1 and SW620 cells with IC50 values of 69.77 ± 2.43 μg/mL, 74.97 ± 1.08 μg/mL and 58.91 ± 1.81 μg/mL, respectively. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are one type of phytotoxins distributed in various plants, including many medicinal herbs. Many organs might suffer injuries from the intake of PAs, and the liver is the most susceptible one. The diagnosis, toxicological mechanism, and detoxification of PAs-induced hepatotoxicity have been studied for several decades, which is of great significance for its prevention, diagnosis, and therapy. When the liver was exposed to PAs, liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) loss, hemorrhage, liver parenchymal cells death, nodular regeneration, Kupffer cells activation, and fibrogenesis occurred. These pathological changes classified the PAs-induced liver injury as acute, sub-acute, and chronic type. PAs metabolic activation, mitochondria injury, glutathione (GSH) depletion, inflammation, and LSECs damage-induced activation of the coagulation system were well recognized to play critical roles in the pathological process of PAs-induced hepatotoxicity. A lot of natural compounds like glycyrrhizic acid, (-)-epicatechin, quercetin, baicalein, chlorogenic acid, and so on were demonstrated to be effective in alleviating PAs-induced liver injury, which rendered them huge potential to be developed into therapeutic drugs for PAs poisoning in clinics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of curcumin-rich turmeric (CRT) extract against isotretinoin (ISO)-induced liver damage through routine biochemical parameters and oxidative stress parameters that indicate liver damage. 42 albino Wistar rats of 200 g were randomly grouped as Group I: Healthy control, Group II: Sunflower oil, Group III: Curcumin 200 mg/kg, Group IV: ISO control groups (7.5 mg/kg), Group V: Curcumin 50 mg/kg + ISO 7.5 mg/kg, Group VI: Curcumin 100 mg/kg + ISO 7.5 mg/kg, Group VII: Curcumin 200 mg/kg + ISO 7.5 mg/kg. At the end, after the rats were killed, their blood and liver tissues were collected. ALT and AST levels in serum; superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), GSH, and MDA levels in liver tissue were determined. Our results showed that ALT, AST, and MDA levels increased, and SOD and GSH levels decreased in the ISO-administered group compared to the healthy control group. CRT 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg groups were compared to ISO group. A dose-dependent increase in protective effect was observed. A decrease in ALT, AST, and MDA levels, and an increase in SOD and GSH levels were determined. A protective effect was found at all doses. The best protective effect was in the CRT 200 mg/kg group. CRT extract can be considered a candidate herbal medicine for the elimination of liver damage in individuals using ISO. However, further experimental and clinical validation should be studied. Two pairs of new dihydrophenanthro[b]furan enantiomers blephebibnols G–H (1–2), one new dihydrophenanthro[b]furan derivative blephebibnol I (3), along with four known analogues (4–7), were isolated from the tubers of Bletilla striata. Their structures including the absolute configurations were determined by the combination of spectroscopic data analysis, ECD and NMR calculations. Compounds 1a, 1b, and 2b showed inhibition of NO production in LPS-stimulated BV-2 cells, with IC50 values ranging from 4.11 to 14.65 μM. Further mechanistic study revealed that 1a suppressed the phosphorylation of p65 subunit to regulate the NF-κB signaling pathway. Bioactive compounds represent a broad class of dietary metabolites derived from fruits and vegetables, such as polyphenols, carotenoids and glucosinolates with potential for cancer prevention. Curcumin, resveratrol, quercetin, and β-carotene have been the most widely applied bioactive compounds in chemoprevention. Lately, many approaches to encapsulating bioactive components in nano-delivery systems have improved biomolecules' stability and targeted delivery. In this review, we critically analyze nano-delivery systems for bioactive compounds, including polymeric nanoparticles (NPs), solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN), nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC), liposomes, niosomes, and nanoemulsions (NEs) for potential use in cancer therapy. Efficacy studies of the nanoformulations using cancer cell lines and in vivo models and updated human clinical trials are also discussed. Nano-delivery systems were found to improve the therapeutic efficacy of bioactive molecules against various types of cancer (e.g., breast, prostate, colorectal and lung cancer) mainly due to the antiproliferation and pro-apoptotic effects of tumor cells. Furthermore, some bioactive compounds have promised combination therapy with standard chemotherapeutic agents, with increased tumor efficiency and fewer side effects. These opportunities were identified and developed to ensure more excellent safety and efficacy of novel herbal medicines enabling novel insights for designing nano-delivery systems for bioactive compounds applied in clinical cancer therapy. Clinical studies of herbs are crucial to practice in alternative medicine. However, finding those articles from databases is difficult due to the complexity of terminology. While clinical search filters are helpful, to date there are no search filters specific to clinical studies of herbs. This study aimed to develop search filters to retrieve clinical studies of herbs from PubMed. Relevant clinical study of herb articles from 2019 to 2020 was manually identified from ten selected journals. Search terms were extracted from the articles using PubReMiner, and search strategies composed of one to four search terms were formulated and evaluated. Out of 8,169 articles, 211 were clinical studies of herbs. The two most effective search filters showed 100% sensitivity with 85% specificity and 99% specificity with 55% sensitivity. These queries, respectively, reached 99% sensitivity with 85% specificity and 99% specificity with 60% sensitivity in the validation set. The developed search filters yielded more relevant articles than PubMed's clinical study filter when using the same herb name. Search filters for clinical studies of herbs were developed successfully. The best search strategy is to use these filters with the name of the herb that the researchers desire. This study investigated how Radix Bupleuri-Radix Paeoniae Alba (BP) was active against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology (TCMSP) database was employed to determine the active ingredients of BP and potential targets against HCC. Molecular docking analysis verified the binding activity of PTEN with BP ingredients. H22 cells were used to establish an HCC model in male balb/c mice. Immunofluorescence staining, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and real-time quantitative PCR were used to study changes in proliferation, apoptosis, PTEN levels, inflammation, and T-cell differentiation in male balb/c mice. The major active ingredients in BP were found to be quercetin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin, stigmasterol, and beta-sitosterol. Molecular docking demonstrated that these five active BP ingredients formed a stable complex with PTEN. BP exhibited an anti-tumor effect in our HCC mouse model. BP was found to increase the CD8+ and IFN-γ+/CD4+ T cell levels while decreasing the PD-1+/CD8+ T and Treg cell levels in HCC mice. BP up-regulated the IL-6, IFN-γ, and TNF-α levels but down-regulated the IL-10 levels in HCC mice. After PTEN knockdown, BP-induced effects were abrogated. Six new iridoid glycosides were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of the whole plants of Hedyotis diffusa Willd. They were identified as E-6-O-p-methoxycinnamoyl-10-O-acetyl scandoside acid methyl ester (1), Z-6-O-p-methoxycinnamoyl-10-O-acetyl scandoside acid methyl ester (2), E-6-O-caffeoyl scandoside methyl ester (3), E-6-O-p-coumaroyl-6′-O-acetyl scandoside methyl ester (4), Z-6-O-p-coumaroyl-6′-O-acetyl scandoside methyl ester (5), and E-6-O-p-coumaroyl-4′-O-acetyl scandoside methyl ester (6). A total of 65 phenolic acid compounds were annotated or identified by UHPLC-MS/MS method, among them, 17 p-HAP (p-hydroxyacetophenone) glycosides were firstly targeted profiled based on molecular networking. Their characteristic product ions of MS/MS spectra were found and examined on the guideline of targeted isolation. As a result, a new p-HAP glycoside was thus obtained and determined as 2′-O-caffeoyl-p-HAP-4-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (33) based on 1D and 2D NMR data. Besides, multicomponents quantitative analysis indicated the distinct regional variability in chemicals distribution of A. japonica, and meanwhile, the contents of p-HAP glycosides from A. japonica were higher than those in A. capillaris as a whole, which further suggested the potential medicinal value of A. japonica. Seven new monoterpene alkaloids (1 − 7), along with 16 known analogues, were isolated from an aqueous decoction of the hook-bearing stems of Uncaria rhynchophylla (Gou-teng). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic data analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations. Compounds 1 and 2 are stereoisomers belonging to a novel type of pseudoindoxyl monoterpene alkaloids, 3 is the first monoterpene furoindole alkaloid from nature, and 4 − 7 are derivatives of the known monoterpene alkaloids featuring different structures. This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extracts (EEs) of Cistus monspeliensis and Globularia alypum. C. monspeliensis showed the highest values of phenolic compounds. Further, it was shown that EE of C. monspeliensis displayed the highest DPPH (IC50 = 8.3 ± 1.08 mg/mL). The chemical profiles demonstrated a total of 12 and 13 phenolic compounds for C. monspeliensis and G. alypum, respectively. EEs of both plants possessed broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity when tested against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Treatment of studied strains with these extracts at their MICs reduced considerably the bacterial viability. The extracts did not induce total bacterial lysis, as determined by the measurement of optical density at 620 nm. Strains treated with EEs at Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations showed significant loss of tolerance to NaCl. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder owing to the insulin faulty production or the resistance to the action mechanism where the accumulation of glucose is the major side effect in the body in the case of diabetes. Numerous herbs with the potential of reducing glucose production along with combating the secondary ailments associated with it but >1% out of 250,000 have been pharmacologically validated. Affordability and historical usage of these herbal remedies often result in patients' preference as primary or as adjunctive to conventional therapies. Clinical trials conducted with herbs are necessary for determining the efficacy of the herbs against diabetes. Additional benefits of herbal employment include the treatment of secondary ailments in patients along with diabetes including triglyceride reduction, cholesterol level management, body mass index, and cardiovascular disease control. Any individual extract marketed as antidiabetic formulations requires clinical validation before adoption but with ongoing disease status, quick validation in protocols and testing is needed to understand, isolate and cross-verify the status of the bioactive ingredient in individual herb and the polyherb extract formulations. Standardization, characterization, long-term role and impact on the human body, efficacy status, and toxicity profile need to be addressed fully for each active ingredient before it is advanced for production. Supplementing with edible herbal medicine is an important strategy because of its role in nutrition. Many polyphenols, which are universal components in edible herbal medicines, have low bioavailability. Therefore, gut microbiota is a key determinant of polyphenol bioactivity. Polyphenols can alter the abundance of flora associated with neuroinflammation by reversing intestinal microbiota dysbiosis. Intestinal flora-mediated chemical modification of polyphenols can result in their conversion into active secondary metabolites. The current review summarizes the main edible medicines used in anti-depression and details the interactions between polyphenols and gut microbiota; in addition, it provides insights into the mechanisms underlying the possible suppression of neuroinflammation associated with depression, by polyphenols in edible herbal medicine. A better understanding of polyphenols with bioactivities that are crucial in edible herbal medicine may facilitate their use in the prevention and treatment of neuroinflammation associated with depression. As active components universal exist in edible herbal medicine, many polyphenols rely on intestinal microbes for absorption and metabolism. Interaction with gut microbes emerges as a novel target for suppressing depressive symptoms by herbal medicine. Bacterial resistance to antibiotics poses a high level of danger worldwide. Bacterial resistance mechanisms are spreading globally, impeding our ability to treat common infectious diseases. Misuse and overuse of antibiotics accelerate microbial resistance to antibiotics. Despite the exerted efforts, none of the newly developed antibiotics are expected to be effective against the dangerous forms of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Since many plants have been shown to contain powerful antimicrobial compounds that can act synergistically or alternatively to antibiotics, the demand for herbal medicines has recently increased to cotreat microbes that are resistant to antibiotics. Maximum benefit can be achieved when the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of natural products match the antibiotic. This review article refers to nine highly effective and key herbs to use alongside antibiotics to overcome crises of antibiotic resistance. Saikosaponin A (SSA) is an active ingredient of the Asian medicinal herb, Bupleurum falcatum L. When administered via the intraperitoneal (i.p.) route, SSA suppressed multiple addictive-like behaviours, including operant alcohol self-administration, in rodents. It is unknown whether these effects are retained after intragastric (i.g.) administration, a desirable prerequisite for a compound with therapeutic potential. To fill this gap, i.g. SSA (0, 50, and 100 mg/kg) was tested in Sardinian alcohol-preferring (sP) rats trained to lever-respond for oral alcohol. SSA reduced lever-responding and amount of self-administered alcohol.
