The article presents the discussion on field of International Relations (IR) increasingly acknowledging pervasive racism in institutional foundations. Topics include sidelining the Haitian revolution in the truncated debates about the abolition of slavery among other key themes; and showing the role in Anglophone IR's disciplinary attention or the longer-term impacts on decolonisation processes such as the mandate system.

This article investigates the relation of the figure of the zombie to the Haitian Revolution, the only successful slave revolution in the Atlantic World. While existing research often stresses the strong link between the zombie and the slave, this is not borne out by the contemporary discourse on the Haitian Revolution. Whereas horror and terror are associated with the zombie from its inception, it is only with the US occupation of Haiti (1915–1934) that US-American writers and directors invented the zombie of popular North Atlantic culture: a soulless slave without consciousness directed by a zombie master. As I argue, this amounts to a neo-colonialist act of symbolic re-enslavement of the self-emancipated Haitians. The Duchess de Duras heard about a little black girl who had, in 1788, been purchased as a house pet by the Governor of Senegal and given to his uncle, Monsieur de Beauvau. In 1820, the Duchess began writing a novel about the child (creating the first black female protagonist in European literature). Fifty anonymous copies of ‘Ourika’ were privately published in 1823, but the copies did not remain in the shadows for long. This essay examines how and why this black girl became such a potent representation, so popular that she inspired a brief but important period of hyper-visibility in Paris: ‘Ourika Mania.’ What interrogations of categories and spaces in early nineteenth-century Paris open up through our investigation of both the real and fictional ‘Ourikas?’ The dilemmas sparked by representations ofOurikareiterated that no matter how ‘proper’ the body, blackness precluded inclusion into definitions of Frenchness. The focus of this article is a critical look at the epistemological treatment of the Haitian Revolution by progressive 20th-century scholars such as C.L.R. James, Eugene Genovese, Robin Blackburn, David Geggus and Susan Buck-Morss. Their ideas and modes of thinking, knowing and constructing meaning, in respect of the cognitive and general epistemological basis of the Haitian Revolution, are examined in comparison to 19th-century black abolitionist thinkers such as Pompee Valentin Vastey, Frederick Douglass, William Wells Brown and James Theodore Holly. The essay concludes that the 20th-century progressive Haitian revolutionary scholars have too uncritically relied on the 18th and 19th-century occidental ontological and epistemological complex to construct narratives of the Haitian Revolution. By doing so, they denied or underestimated the cognitive agency of Africans in the making of the Haitian Revolution and thus presented a distorted picture of the Haitian Revolution in Haitian revolution studies. It reflects on the genealogy of slave brutality and dehumanization of Haitians to maximize industrial productivity and relates it to the book "Le Zombi du Grand Perou, ou la comtesse de Cocagne," by Pierre-Corneille Blessebois. The article explores the international and intercultural connections of U.S. and Haiti during the U.S. occupation and World War II. The author reflects on the Haitian Revolution in the book of C. L. R. James' book "The Black Jacobins" which embodies a renewed interwar engagement and a model for popular revolution and unity. This essay examines how Kleist's novella Die Verlobung in St. Domingo uses the Haitian Revolution as a means of demonstrating the potential unreliability of language. Upon first glance, this text seems to comment upon matters of political significance, such as race, revolution, and the character of justice. However, closer inspection reveals that these themes enable the text to reflect upon the nature of the sign, the act of reading, and the ethical demands of interpretation. Nevertheless, even this self-reflective model proves misleading in light of those passages that cast doubt upon the narrator's authority and the trustworthiness of certain details. This article examines black abolitionist William Wells Brown's 1854 lecture "St. Domingo: Its Revolutions and its Patriots," juxtaposing Brown's history of the Haitian Revolution against those printed in publications such as the American "DeBow's Review" and the British "Anti-Slavery Reporter." The staggered, often contradictory nature of the multiple insurrections and uprisings occurring in Haiti complement Brown's own interest in fragmented narratives, and allow him to offer a model for black revolutionary activity contained not in a singular moment or figure, but instead spread across multiple revolutions and revolutionaries. Following Brown's logic opens up the possibility of developing an international revolutionary continuum deeply dependent upon black liberatory goals. A host of events could subsequently re-emerge as part of such a continuum, including but certainly not limited to the American Revolution, the Haitian Revolution, and an internationally inflected American Civil War.
