A significant share of anthropogenic global warming comes from livestock production. There is debate about whether there can be any role for livestock in a climatically sustainable future; the debate is particularly heated for cows and sheep, largely due to the methane they burp out. However, short-lived gases like methane affect climate in a fundamentally different way than long-lived gases like carbon dioxide. Consequently, climate stabilization does not require zeroing-out cattle herds. But this doesn't mean we can eat our beef and have it (a tolerable climate) too—livestock still contribute to global warming. Preventing or limiting future growth in livestock-related emissions can represent a sensible part of the portfolio of responses to the climate crisis, particularly when carbon dioxide emissions are not on track to reach net zero sufficiently quickly. As the climate warms, extended drought and heat events in the United States are driving an increase in acres burned and homes lost to wildfire. The most devastating wildfires happen when dry winds carry embers long distances, start spot fires and ignite homes. Burning homes then become the fuel that ignites other nearby homes, causing mass conflagrations. Today wildfire is largely approached as a problem that can be controlled through vegetation treatments and firefighting, but that strategy has not stopped the loss of homes and even entire communities. However, new observational and analytical tools have given firefighters, governments, and the public a better understanding of wildfire and how to prepare for it. As a renewable energy source, ocean wind energy plays an important role in addressing challenges such as global energy shortages and climate warming. In the past decade, the offshore wind power industry has developed rapidly. However, its development has also inevitably affected local social, economic and environmental aspects. Therefore, a timely understanding of offshore wind power dynamics development is crucial for its healthy and sustainable development. Based on this, this study designs and develops a more economical, reliable and real-time offshore wind turbine (OWT) extraction method by combining deep learning and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform. The method consists of two main steps. The first part utilizes multiple semantic segmentation models to construct a multi-model detection method to initially detect OWTs. The second part utilizes the GEE cloud computing platform for installation time detection and secondary purification processing of the preliminary results. The results show that the number of global OWTs reached 13,609 by 2023, and the accuracy of the detection results reached 99.93%. China has been the fastest-growing country in offshore wind power in the last decade, from installing only 4 units in 2015 to installing 6,775 units in 2023 and surpassing the UK in 2020 and becoming the country building the most OWTs worldwide. Currently, 85% of the world's OWTs are located in China and European North Sea waters. Additionally, other regions have great potential for offshore wind development. Finally, this study provides the world's most up-to-date and complete OWT dataset, which can provide data support for research on marine ecological and environmental protection, marine spatial planning, and socioeconomic benefits. Sunscreens may affect thermoregulation and sweating during exercise in warm climates. In this study, we compared the effects of three sunscreens on local sweating rate (LSR) during exercise under controlled conditions (32°C, relative humidity 55%). Fifteen subjects (8 men, 7 women) underwent 20-min cycles in four randomized conditions: control (CON), sunscreen A (SSA), sunscreen B (SSB) and sunscreen C (SSC). LSR was measured by a patch on the scapular region (p < .001). CON showed higher LSR (182.21 μL/min·dm2, CI95% 168 to 195 μL/min·dm2) compared to SSA (142.10 μL/min·dm2, CI95% 128 to 155 μL/min·dm2), SSB (158.06 μL/min·dm2, CI95% 144 to 171 μL/min·dm2), and SSC (159.00 μL/min·dm2, CI95% 145 to 172 μL/min·dm2). In men, SSA showed lower LSR compared to CON, SSB, and SSC (p < .05). On the other hand, no statistically significant differences were found in LSR between SSB, SSC, and CON conditions. In women, CON was superior to all sunscreens in LSR (p < .001), and there was no difference between them (SSA, SSB, SSC, p > .05). As climate change urgency intensifies, understanding its impact on destinations and the development of adaptation strategies becomes critical for sustainable tourism. This article, through a meta-analysis of 290 climate change elasticity estimates in tourism from 34 studies, examines the influence of climate factors and tourists' adaptive behaviours on tourism demand. It also projects the situations countries will face by 2050 under ongoing climate change scenarios. Findings suggest that low- and middle-income economies and Small Island Developing States, despite their minimal carbon contributions, will face significant tourism losses. In contrast, high-income countries might see increased travel demand and lead to more emissions. This will aggravate climatic conditions and inflict greater losses on less-developed communities. The country's energy demand is experiencing rapid growth, and fossil fuels remain the primary resources to meet this increasing need. However, global warming poses a significant challenge for governments and industries worldwide. To address this issue, utilizing methane as a fossil fuel and implementing CO2 capture and sequestration can prove to be effective mitigation strategies. This paper presents an innovative idea to utilize unmineable coal seams in the Singrauli coal field for CO2 sequestration while extracting associated CBM to offset the cost of the sequestration process. The findings reveal that the field has great potential for CO2 sequestration. The estimated average maximum sorption capacities of CO2 and CH4 in the coal seams under in situ conditions of the basin are 39.50 m3/t and 11.15 m3/t, respectively. The total maximum sorption capacities of CO2 and CH4 in the potential coal seams are estimated to be 10,758.00 Mm3 and 3,215.00 Mm3, respectively. These results indicate that the unmineable coal seams in the Singrauli coalfield hold potential for CO2 sequestration and the extraction of available CBM from the coal seams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the last few decades of industrial growth, the amount of carbon dioxide has augmented rapidly in to the environment. CO2 rising level in the environment is enormously contributing to increase in surface temperature of earth. The paramount domineering issue is the worrying speed at which the CO2 amount is increasing in the atmosphere. The available CO2-reducing technologies have the potential to reduce emission cost of carbon dioxide. Numerous recommended techniques can be amended to existing plants based on nonrenewable type fuel source. To date, considerable work has been done for CO2 capturing using a variety of adsorbent either commercially available or synthesized by suitable activation technique. In this review paper, CO2 capture by adsorption using a variety of adsorbents such as carbonaceous, non-carbonaceous and modified adsorbents has been studied. Various methods of physical and chemical activation to produce activated carbon for enhanced CO2 capture from different class of biomass have been investigated. All the information in CO2 capture and related issues have been described, summarized and thoroughly presented in the review article with emphasis on date pits-derived activated carbons. Productivity in strawberry is dependent on carbon assimilation in the leaves. The main scenarios for climate change include an increase in the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere and an increase in temperature. This review examined the relationship between leaf growth and temperature in strawberry. Leaf growth follows a linear, sigmoid or Gaussian pattern over the season or is variable depending on the weather. There was a linear increase in leaf growth with temperatures below 26°C, and a linear decrease in growth with temperatures above 26°C. In other studies, the mean lower optimum for 90% of maximum growth was 18.3° ± 3.9°C, the median was 19.6°C, and the range was from 7.2° to 22.0°C (N = 11). The mean higher optimum was 27.3° ± 3.6°C, the median was 27.4°C, and the range was from 21.1° to 33.5°C (N = 12). Leaf growth was higher under 30°C and lower above 30°C. Limited studies suggest that elevated CO2 will not counteract the impact of high temperatures on growth. Climate change will increase leaf growth in cool areas and decrease growth in warm areas. The decrease in leaf growth in locations with temperatures above 30°C will contribute to lower yields under global warming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper highlights how technology can contribute to reaching the 2015 Paris Agreement goals of net zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and global warming below 2°C in 2100. It uses the Advanced Climate Change Long-term model (ACCL), particularly adapted to quantify the consequences of energy price and technology shocks on CO2 emissions, temperature, climate damage and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The simulations show that without climate policies the warming may be +5°C in 2100, with considerable climate damage. An acceleration in 'usual' technical progress not targeted at reducing CO2- even worsens global warming and climate damage. According to our estimates, the world does not achieve climate goals in 2100 without 'green' technologies. Intervening only via energy prices, e.g. a carbon tax, requires challenging hypotheses of international coordination and price increase for polluting energies. We assess a multi-lever climate strategy combining energy efficiency gains, carbon sequestration, and a decrease of 3% per year in the relative price of 'clean' electricity with a 1 to 1.5% annual rise in the relative price of polluting energy sources. AbstractWe live in troubling times. Amongst global political instability, rising economic inequality and a rapacious Western consumerist lifestyle, we face the impending risks of global warming and ecological collapse. In this short opinion paper, we bring this topic to the agenda of ecological psychology in the hope of stimulating fruitful conversation. To do so, we ask how ecological psychologists should conceptualize the environment in these precarious times. We will argue that the current ecological catastrophe shows that the environment should not be described simply in terms of affordances, but as an ecosystem on which many affordances depend. Not only does this conceptualization hold scientific implications, it speaks to an active morality that could help us change our ways, and play our part in holding open a just future for all. AbstractDisturbed areas alongside roads shape unique vegetation communities dominated by synanthropic native and alien plant species, facilitated by roads serving as corridors for dispersal, penetration, and integration of synanthropic plants into new areas. We collected presence/absence data for individual species along roads in the Orlické Mountains, Czech Republic, in three time periods during 1970–2010. The distribution of species was mapped using a 1-square-kilometer grid. Analyzing 107 plant species (44 native, 63 alien), we found archaeophyte species favor lower elevations (foothills), while neophytes thrive at higher elevations. Over 40 years, neophyte frequency significantly rose at lower elevations, contrasting the decline at higher elevations, with no marked change in archaeophyte frequency. Native species decline notably at 400–500 m elevations. Some thermophilous native synanthropic species and alien archaeophytes spread from foothills to higher elevations, while some psychrophilic higher-elevation species shift upwards, diminishing at lower elevations. Deryck Anthony Scarr, a renowned historian of the Pacific, passed away on March 29, 2024. Scarr was born in England in 1939 and obtained his PhD from the Australian National University. He authored numerous books and articles on the Pacific, including biographies of influential figures in Fiji. Scarr emphasized the importance of accessing local sources and traveling to the places he studied. He mentored many students and had a deep love for Fiji. This study examines the economic impacts of the North Warning System (NWS) modernization. It begins by first providing a summary of the creation and evolution of the North American Aerospace and Defense Command (NORAD) and the NWS with a specific intention of setting the stage for the discussion on subsequent areas. Understanding how NORAD and the NWS developed to where it is today is important to understand the choices available to the Canadian government moving forward. Next, the current security environment in Canada's North will be reviewed. The impact of climate change and global warming, new technology, and new threats changes the strategic environment in the North and Canada needs to revisit how it approaches these challenges. Based on this review of the security environment, the literature on socioeconomic studies, electoral districts and defence spending in the North can be presented along with the empirical data that exists from past studies. The study looks at five scenarios taking a rough order of magnitude look at possible economic benefits to Canada's three northern territories and Labrador based on the requirement for modernizing the NWS, a critical issue for the future defence of Canada and North America. A fungal palynomorph corresponding to the fossil-species Lirasporis intergranifer R. Potonié & S.C.D. Sah, from the Middle Miocene lignite mine in Tomisławice (central Poland), is considered as the new combination Cancellidium intergraniferum (R. Potonié & S.C.D. Sah) G. Worobiec & E. Worobiec, comb. nov. The fossil-genus Lirasporis is treated as a synonym of the modern genus Cancellidium Tubaki. Cancellidium intergraniferum from the Miocene of Poland represents the first fossil record of Cancellidium outside Asia, the first record of this genus from Europe, and the northernmost known fossil occurrence of Cancellidium. Living representatives of Cancellidium seem to prefer warm and humid climates and, being aero-aquatic hyphomycetes, are usually associated with decaying woody remains in aquatic environments. A similar ecology is suggested for the fossil C. intergraniferum, which could be a reliable fungal non-pollen palynomorph proxy for palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. A distinct coal break occurs widely in the late Early Jurassic in Central Asia, the cause of which, however, is still debated largely due to the uncertainty of its age constraint. In the Junggar Basin of northwestern China, this coal break coincides with the Sangonghe Formation, which is well exposed along the basin margins, and is mainly composed of lacustrine deposits rich in a variety of fossils, including plants, pollens and spores, bivalves, clam shrimps, insects and some vertebrates. Here we name them as the Sangonghe biota and review their biostratigraphic framework. The Sangonghe biota constrains the Sangonghe Formation to the late Pliensbachian to the early Aalenian. Abundant thermophilous plants and Classopollis, together with frequent occurrences of red beds and carbonate nodules in the middle part of the Sangonghe Formation, are indicative of an arid climate in Central Asia at that time. This arid interlude should be responsible for the coal break, which may be related to the global warming in the early Toarcian. However, more precise dating evidence is needed to substantiate this. For the estimation of global karst carbon sink, a few conventional methods usually require the parameters that are difficult to measure, resulting in the big cost. Moreover, under the constraints of incomplete and timeliness issues in the collection of data over a large region, it has remained a challenge for these methods to study global karst carbon sink. Therefore, this paper proposes estimating the global karst carbon sink, and analyzing the suitability of the response surface methodology and the fluctuating variation of karst carbon sink in global karst regions from 1951 to 2050. This paper shows that the proposed method can reduce the time of numerical calculation and is suitable for application in global weathering models; The global karst carbon sink in the future changes not only displays an upward trend but also exposures its fluctuating trend largely. Culturally responsive parenting interventions are crucial for immigrant parents in disadvantaged areas. This qualitative study delves into the experiences of 18 immigrant mothers (Mage = 41.2 years) from Somalia, Syria, Turkey, Eritrea, and Iraq participating in the Swedish Self-Assured Parents programme, targeting immigrant parents who live in social disadvantage with teenage children. Thematic analysis revealed seven main themes (1) the meaning of the programme content and structure, (2) enjoying oneself and being comfortable, (3) putting the adolescent in the centre, (4) mothers' own socioemotional development, (5) changing from being a passive reactor to an active agent, (6) empowered citizenship, and (7) having always been a strong and good mother. Overall, the mothers were positive about both the content and the format of the programme, appreciating the warm and supportive climate. They also perceived themselves as being more attentive to adolescent needs, having improved their own socio-emotional skills, and being empowered both as a citizen and as a mother on account of attending the programme. With the development of culturally responsive programmes that take into account the unique needs and experiences of diverse populations, governments can effectively support parents, promote child positive development, and help cultivate social cohesion among the members of society. The presence of biota in the Black Sea is mostly determined by seawater temperature and salinity. The consensus of many scientists doing research on global warming is that in 2100, the average air temperature will be increase than today's values. With climate changing, precipitation rates will change due to the Black Sea water temperature and the changing atmospheric regime, causing an unbalanced entry of nutrients into the sea, and as a result, excessive plankton proliferation may occur. This may mean that the habitats of the species in the Black Sea are further limited. The increases in sea levels may not be serious, but there is no doubt that there will be some increases. These increases will affect the coastal ecosystem, especially the rich living life in the region where the waves hit the shore, which we call the wave zone, will be adversely affected. These predictions should be followed up with regular scientific monitoring studies and it should be investigated how biota from invertebrates to fish are affected by the changes. AbstractThis study uses bibliometric techniques to explore the international knowledge base on climate change education (CCE), which considers education as crucial for addressing the climate emergency through fostering climate-literate citizens. Analyzing two decades of scientific literature on CCE, we identify evolving considerations, foci, trends, and recommendations, examining a total of 1,264 articles published between 2000 and 2022 in educational-related fields in Web of Science. Using bibliometric techniques, we assessed research trends, author co-citations and journal citations to reveal an evolving publication landscape, including shifts in locations of productive researchers, influential articles, and leading journals publishing CCE studies. Bibliometric techniques help to identify the intellectual knowledge structure and inter-journal referencing, encompassing Theoretical Basis of CCE, Psychology of CCE and Communication, Climate Change within Socioscientific Issues, Conceptions of Climate Change, and Epistemology in CCE. Developing countries have more than 1300 investment treaties with developed countries. Investment treaties are often alleged to constrain developing countries' climate policies. This paper examines four treaty reforms that are often suggested as remedies to such regulatory chill. It considers an investment treaty that protects a stranded developed country investment in a developing country. The reforms are compared with regard to whether they can induce the developing country to regulate the investment, and their political attractiveness. The reforms are shown to have features that seem to have gone unnoticed in the debate. Exclusion of investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) may be ineffective due to a hold-up problem, and if effective requires unlawful regulation by the host country. A shortening of a sunset period applicable to unilateral withdrawal can postpone regulation. A reduction in the amount of stipulated compensation can induce the developing country to phase out the stranded investment, but will require a compensation payment from the developing country to the developed country investor. The reform with best potential to address stranded investment problems appears to be an increase in a carve-out from the compensation requirement for measures with sufficiently positive climate effect. Stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) is a controversial technique that has been suggested as a means of temporarily halting global warming. A study conducted on 441 individuals in the US in November 2023 investigated the impact of three video presentations either promoting or opposing research on SAI. Two of the videos were presented by scientific experts either promoting or opposing further research into this technology. The third was politicized, featuring Tucker Carlson on Fox News, and arguing that SAI would endanger Americans. We found that all three of the video presentations had a strong influence on general support for or against research, and that the politicized presentation not only reduced support for research but also reduced trust in science and technology to provide solutions to problems facing humanity. The Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) system has been used as a unit of study to apply the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. Kanjur waste processing facility Mumbai, India was selected for technological performance assessment. The paper analyses multiple strategies for managing the MSW and the comparison of strategies is done to study impact on Global Warming Potential (GWP), Eutrophication Potential (GW) and Acidification potential (AP), which are the critical impact areas of MSW processing. The scenarios included were transportation, material recovery, direct landfill with the recovery of LFG, composting of the source-separated organic fraction with landfilling and biomining. Landfilling and the release of LFG (Landfill Gas), electricity generation from LFG, flaring of LFG were other assessed interventions. The scenarios were modelled using the CML impact characterisation method. The results highlight that sorting, biomining, composting, landfilling with energy recovery has the minimal impact on the environment compared to strategies where direct landfilling was considered. On a life cycle view, the transportation of waste to the processing site caused a significant global warming impact and is a hotspot, which can be considered for impact mitigation. Initiatives like RDF reuse, leachate recirculation, LFG recovery, biomining are other circular practices that lead to a significant reduction in GWP, EP and AP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amongst the most devastating extreme weather events in recent years, the 2022 Pakistan floods ostensibly triggered a new-found urgency to reduce emissions and redress other underlying causes of human-induced global warming. Yet multinational corporations and Western governments remain non-committal about shifting away from non-renewable energy, offering meaningful climate and debt financing, or substantively reducing emissions. Meanwhile, the modalities of capital accumulation in postcolonial contexts such as Pakistan are destroying already vulnerable ecosystems, even as they reinforce logics of expropriation and uneven development inherited from colonial times. As Pakistan experiences a demographic explosion and mainstream politics becomes increasingly reactionary, the imperative of posing an alternative hegemonic conception to the dominant development paradigm is ever more acute. This Commentary interrogates the meaning of climate justice so as to bring the global political economy into conversation with the demographic, environmental, and economic trends in the post-colony, with a specific focus on the 2022 floods in Pakistan. It is contended that the Pakistan case can be broadly extrapolated to postcolonial South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, regions that are home to the fastest growing young populations in the world, and also amongst the most vulnerable to climate change. Emissions-intensive, trade-exposed (EITE) industries must decarbonize to limit global warming to 1.5°C. This study explores how policy stringency and regional variability impact EITE industrial decarbonization. It uses Canada as a case study due to its heterogeneous industrial sector and high regional resource variability. The study has two scenarios: one with global climate action where the world pushes to limit warming to 1.5°C, and one where Canada acts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and the rest of the world lags. The scenarios differ in three ways: the global price of oil, the pace of technological change for low emission technologies, and domestic climate policy. In the global action scenario, a carbon price of $430USD2020 was needed to achieve 75% decarbonization of EITE industries by 2050. In our global inaction scenario, EITE industries only decarbonize 25%, as domestic climate policy considered international competition and the risk of industrial shutdown. If competitiveness concerns persist as simulated in this scenario, Canada is highly unlikely to achieve deep industrial decarbonization by 2050. The results also show that regional variability plays a significant role in low emissions technology adoption. While all regions will need targeted innovation and commercialization support as well as market uptake mechanisms, we find that relative advantages and disadvantages in terms of resource availability and industrial mix play an important role in how regional decarbonization occurs. For instance, regions with inexpensive local fossil fuels and ready geology suitable for CO2 storage have a high uptake of carbon capture and storage. Regions with access to abundant hydroelectricity rely more on electrification as a decarbonization pathway. Regions with no relative resource advantages are at greater risk for industrial shutdown due to the higher cost of decarbonization. Achieving national deep decarbonization of EITE industries in Canada or elsewhere is highly unlikely without global climate action due to competitiveness concerns. Policymakers interested in addressing competitiveness concerns might do so either through policy mechanisms that support the uptake of low emission technologies, mechanisms that penalize regions without decarbonization policy, or both. Policymakers should consider relative regional advantages and disadvantages to EITE decarbonization by designing policies that account for industrial heterogeneity and regional resource availability. Many desert birds are vulnerable to anthropogenic global warming and landscape transformation, particularly in the case of range-restricted species. We quantified suitable habitat and the current population of Red Larks Calendulauda burra (family Alaudidae), a range-restricted southern African species, in a conservation area thought to be one of the species' strongholds — the Black Mountain Mine Conservation Area (BMMCA) in the Northern Cape, South Africa. We modelled habitat suitability and estimated home range sizes using telemetry data and kernel density estimates. Home range sizes did not differ between males (42.4 ± 28.3 ha; n = 5) and females (41.9 ± 31.3 ha; n = 5). Transect data and home range density models indicated densities of 0.086–0.127 individuals·ha-1 for adults in suitable habitat. An estimated 33.2% (30.2 km2) of the BMMCA is suitable habitat for Red Larks, suggesting a population of 232–382 individuals. This population estimate is equivalent to <50% of the population estimated for the BMMCA in 1989. Coal mining and coal use have been the most significant cause of global warming. It damages the environment and affects the lives, livelihood and culture of the indigenous people who live in a coal mining area. Resistance and rejection have been strong among those people. The article examines a people's movement in Jharkhand, India, that resisted an open-pit corporate coal mine. The case study explains how they organized and mobilized into a strong movement. It also describes what happens to the poor indigenous when a company disrespects an agreement. Climate risk has garnered greater attention in recent years, increasing the public's demand for climate change information. Public attention to climate risk has also increased corporate environmental governance pressure, which inevitably has an impact on the green investment of enterprises. To deepen the understanding of the issue, this article uses Chinese A-share listed manufacturing companies as a research sample from 2018 to 2022 to investigate the impact of public climate risk perception on corporate green investment. This research found that public perception of climate risk can help to promote green investment among enterprises; its route of action is generally achieved through green technological innovation; and an environmentally conscious image can strengthen the promotion effect of the public perception of climate risk on green investment. Further, public perceptions of climate risk contribute more to corporate green investment and the moderating effect of environmental image is more significant in regions with low levels of environmental regulation. This study not only helps to improve the level of public participation in climate governance, but also accounts for environmental regulation limitations. With global climate warming intensifying, the Land Surface Temperature (LST) variation on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) has become a hot topic in environmental studies. This letter employs spatial analysis to identify LST distribution characteristics, the Pettitt test to detect abrupt changes, and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to analyse periodic variations. Analysing mean annual and seasonal LST from 2001 to 2020, the results indicate the following: (1) Over the past 20 years, the TP's LST increased slowly at 0.08°C per decade, with significant seasonal variations. Warming trends dominate in spring, summer, and autumn, shifting from the northern to the southwestern plateau. Autumn shows the most significant warming at 0.31°C per decade, while winter shows a cooling trend at −0.46°C per decade. (2) The Pettitt test reveals no statistically significant abrupt changes in mean annual and seasonal LST, though potential change points were detected in 2013 for mean annual LST, and in 2005, 2006, 2014, and 2017 for summer, spring, autumn, and winter, respectively. This indicates relative stability in interannual temperature changes, with some asynchronous seasonal variations. Achieving carbon neutrality is an important initiative to cope with global warming. Most studies on the role of tourism towards carbon neutrality were based on the carbon emission reduction (CER) perspective while the carbon sink (CS) perspective was lacking. Based on the quasi-natural experiment of high-standard scenic spots, this paper aimed to examine the effect of tourism resources development on regional CS with high-precision multi-source datasets of 2601 Chinese county units. According to the results of the time-varying difference-in-difference (DID) model regression, CNSA significantly deteriorated CS, but the findings of the rolling regression test confirmed that the adverse effect diminished over time. Climate change and global warming are an omnipresent topic in our daily lives. Planetary health and oncology represent two critical domains within the broader spectrum of healthcare, each addressing distinct yet interconnected aspects of human well-being. We are encouraged to do our part in saving our planet. This should include the decisions we make in our professional life, especially in uro-oncology, as the healthcare sector significantly contributes to environmental pollution. There are many aspects that can be addressed in the healthcare sector in general, as there are structural problems in terms of energy consumption, water waste, therapeutic techniques, transportation and drug manufacturing, as well as in uro-oncology specific areas. For example, the use of different surgical techniques, forms of anesthesia and the use of disposable or reusable instruments, each has a different impact on our environment. The literature search was carried out using PubMed, a medical database. We are used to making decisions based on the best outcome for patients without considering the impact that each decision can have on the environment. The warming climate is giving migratory birds new opportunities to extend their breeding ranges. These expansions may have a significant impact on other local bird communities. Here, we investigate the nest site selection of Mute Swan Cygnus olor, and the expanding Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus. The study aims to assess the differences in habitat use by these two swan species in a lowland anthropogenic landscape. It examines the number of breeding pairs and the surface areas of nesting zones in different habitat types. The field procedures involved the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to survey and locate nests, with geotagged photographs taken to map nest locations. Our results show that Mute Swans primarily occupy oxbows, while Whooper Swans predominantly nest in pond complexes. Moreover, GLM models indicate that Mute Swans tend to choose open areas within a radius of 200 m around the nests, whereas Whooper Swans avoid built-up areas, often choosing forested sites within a radius of 500 m of their nests. These findings suggest that the expansion of the Whooper Swan population has led to changes in the breeding behaviour and habitat use of sympatric Mute Swan populations. The territorial behaviour and aggression of Whooper Swan may be driving Mute Swan away from fishpond habitats. We conclude that interactions between the two swan species are dynamic and have not yet stabilized, so this is an issue that needs to be closely monitored. Understanding these dynamics is essential for the effective conservation and management of wetland habitats in the face of ongoing climate change and shifting breeding ranges of birds. We experimentally tested whether information from environmental scientists regarding the consequences of global warming would be taken more seriously if they had engaged in civil disobedience, as opposed to non-disruptive forms of advocacy on behalf of climate action. Supporting this proposition, we found that after reading an article describing the effects of climate change-driven "wind stilling," our college student participants inferred that there was a greater risk to human welfare from this phenomenon when the information was provided by a scientist who had been involved in disruptive activism. The perception that the scientist had participated in civil disobedience did not undermine the credibility of their research findings. However, the heightened sense of climate risk engendered by these communications did not reliably translate into stronger personal intentions to help reduce the impact of global warming. We write as Australian youth work educators. We consider some of the ethical challenges involved in teaching youth work 'in a warm climate', situated in the diaspora of English youth work but where youth work also has a uniquely Australian character, placing us in an ethically liminal space in our teaching between an understanding of youth work that is robustly defended as being both 'good' and 'true', and what we do, which is different from this, and has its own character and strengths. We situate this in the policy history of youth work in Australia, particularly in the 'neoliberal turn' that this has taken in the last four decades which has created ethical challenges for us, just as it has for those elsewhere. Two guiding questions shape this paper. The first is, given our differences, what challenges do we face in maintaining connections with 'good' youth work and its value base as traditionally defined and defended in England, and relatedly, given that policy and funding regimes in the UK seem to be aligning more with an Australian model, is there anything that the youth work community in the UK can learn from the Australian experience? Amaranth is a pseudocereal that has a potentially greater role to play in reducing malnutrition and promoting animal feed security because of its high quality and ability to adapt to environmental stresses. We review the nutrient content and its value for poultry feeding, as well as uses in industry and for human food that might impact on its availability for poultry. Wit effective processing to detoxify antinutritive components by extrusion or autoclaving, it can be incorporated at up to 40% in the diet of broiler chickens without loss of productivity. Its nutritional value is high, in terms of protein, oil, mineral and antioxidant content, as well as its excellent amino acid balance. Amaranth is likely to be most beneficial as feed grain for poultry in extreme climatic regions, such as those that are drought prone, as long as effective processing can be incorporated into the feed production system. The Arctic rapidly transforms due to global warming and increased human activities, triggering complex changes at unprecedented speeds that challenge conventional institutional responses. We analyse these changes through the lenses of social, political, and environmental boundaries and investigate their impacts on both inhabitants' livelihoods and the region's political framework. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, we highlight the complexities of understanding the interplay among global, regional, and local dynamics in an era where human and non-human aspects are entwined. Our analysis concentrates on three areas: definition of the Arctic; legal disputes concerning the waters around the Svalbard Archipelago; evolving natural hazards and societal risk perceptions in Longyearbyen. Through these examples, we underscore the intricate nature of social, political, and ecological changes and how they challenge current boundary-making processes. By combining knowledge from different systems and scales, our research reveals the interplay between policy-driven science, science-influenced policy, and performative behaviors in reshaping today's Arctic borders and boundaries. We particularly emphasize how climate change is challenging borders and advocate for a departure from static definitions, towards the formulation of environmentally conscious, socially just, and politically viable policies, acknowledging the new biophysical realities of the Anthropocene. During the last two decades, a great number of global products about evapotranspiration ($E$ E) and terrestrial water storage ($S$ S) have been released. This has led to numerous combinations for describing catchment water balance, and hence determining an appropriate combination has become an important issue. The main objective of this study is to evaluate various global products of $E$ E and $S$ S at the catchment scale and determine the most appropriate combination, taking two Korean catchments as examples. For $E$ E , we evaluated global evapotranspiration (Global ET), Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM), and Penman–Monteith–Leuning (PML). For $S$ S , six individual datasets of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) were evaluated, with Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) products used for comparison. We found that the performance is sensitive to the choice of $E$ E product while various $S$ S products displayed minimal differences in results. Based on four evaluation criteria, the combination of PML and GRACE-SH-GFZ is suggested as the most suitable pair. For the period between 2003 and 2013, these data exhibit noteworthy trends of increasing $E$ E , offset by decreasing $S$ S. Warming climate is suspected to be behind these trends. Our research presents an approach that allows for the estimation of monthly streamflow exclusively with global data products, which is an advancement in hydrological analysis and particularly useful for regions that lack in-situ data networks. This approach provides a new perspective in the application of global datasets for the assessment of water balance and could significantly improve predictions in ungauged basins. Faced with the absurdity of continued climate inaction, more people are becoming morally outraged about the projections of human suffering and loss due to global warming impacts. This article draws from the work of Albert Camus to examine human responses to absurdity through rebellion and how this can be applied to understand the notion of climate rebellion. Focusing on Camus' works The Rebel and The Plague, as well as his speech "The Human Crisis", I examine the conditions of climate injustice that present the grounds for climate rebellion, what becoming a climate rebel might mean, the importance of solidarity in climate rebellion, and lastly how Camus' value of limitation might inform ethical responses to minimize climate-related harm. Sweet potato, Ipomoea potatoes L., is an essential crop for food security in various countries. However, the effects of climate change could reduce or increase the yield and profitability of this crop, especially for small farmers. Thus, we developed species distribution models for the current and six climate change scenarios based on environmental variables, species occurrence, and global climate change model. Also, we identified the most relevant environmental variables for cultivation. Future scenarios showed gradual shifts in suitable areas for cultivation. Losses in suitable areas were more relevant than gains at the low concentration of greenhouse gas emissions (RCP 2.6). This trend is maintained in the worst scenario of a high concentration of greenhouse gas emissions (RCP 8.5) with more significant losses of suitable areas. The temperature and precipitation of warmest and wettest quarters, temperature seasonality, and isothermality are the most critical variables for sweet potato cultivation. The cultivation is expected to expand the suitable areas in some regions and retract in others due to climate change. Harmful blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata have been a recurrent phenomenon along the Mediterranean coasts in the last decades. Since first recorded, there has been a widespread belief that the extension of this dinoflagellate, well-known in tropical areas, to higher latitudes was due to global warming and the general rise of seawater temperature. Blooms of O. cf. ovata along the Conero Riviera (northern Adriatic Sea) occur between the end of the summer and the beginning of the autumn since 2006. The Ostreopsis cf. ovata abundances collected from its first record to today were analysed to better define the interannual trend of this phenomenon and its possible linking to certain climate change predictors. A significant increasing trend in the magnitude of Ostreopsis phenomenon was observed up to year 2012, then a stabilization at relatively low values was observed. This trend does not follow the incessant increase in water temperature observed during the last three decades in the Adriatic Sea, but rather recalls patterns seen in invasive species, although the provenience of O. cf. ovata in the Mediterranean Sea is still unresolved. Even if the Ostreopsis bloom in this area seems to slightly lessen in the last decade, Ostreopsis abundances still reach values of up to 103 cells cm−2 which could be harmful to human health. Fruit growth in strawberry is dependent on photosynthesis in the leaves. The main scenarios for climate change include an increase in the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere and an increase in temperature. This review examined photosynthesis in strawberry. The mean photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) for the saturation of CO2 assimilation was 1,031 ± 447 µmol per m2 per s, the median was 1,000 µmol per m2 per s, and the range was from 467 to 2,200 µmol per m2 per s (N = 59). The mean concentration of CO2 for the saturation of assimilation was 869 ± 306 ppm, the median was 900 ppm, and the range was from 410 to 1,750 ppm (N = 32). The optimum temperature range for CO2 assimilation was 20° to 30°C, with lower photosynthesis at lower or higher temperatures. The optimum temperatures for photosynthesis are higher than those for flowering and fruit growth. The impact of climate change on production varies across growing areas. In warm locations, higher temperatures increase photosynthesis, but not yield. In cool locations, higher temperatures increase plant growth and the length of the production season, but this comes at the expense of flower initiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Scientific evidence suggests our planet is experiencing climatic changes: increases in regional temperatures, variations in seasonal precipitation, stronger storms, sea level rise, and decreases in water availability. Consequently, these climatic changes have resulted in elevated rates of human migration, food insecurities, increased socioeconomic inequalities, civil conflict, and acts of terrorism. The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of climate change and its relationship to reported acts of terrorism in Somalia. Using a negative binomial regression model, various variables related to climate change were evaluated from 1991 to 2019. This study identified that annual increases in charcoal production, greenhouse gas emissions, and oil consumption were associated with reported terrorism attacks. Additionally, annual decreases in mean precipitation were also shown to be related to acts of terrorism. Controlling for the gross domestic product growth rate, the population growth rate, and state weakness, this study also determined that annual decreases in state weakness as well as the gross domestic product growth rate were also associated with reported terrorism incidents. Financial development as a viable tool in nation-building and economic expansion is generally established in growth empirics. That notwithstanding, its roles in the drives towards environmental sustainability have received commending and reprimanding views in recent times. However, empirical study advancing the asymmetric effects of financial development from the broader view of measures seems limited and evolving. Hence, the present study investigates the positive and negative effects of financial development measured by broad money and domestic credit to the private sector on environmental sustainability (CO2 emissions and ecological footprint) in the Emerging Seven (E7) economies from 1995 to 2019. The empirical evidence considers the intervention of government policy through fiscal policy instruments (government spending and tax revenue), eco-digitalization, affluence, and population growth in a STIRPAT framework. The main analyses focus on advanced estimators such as pool mean group, mean group, dynamic fixed effects, and panel quantile regression. Feedback shows that negative shocks from financial development captured by broad money induce more surges in CO2 emissions. Similarly, the negative shocks from domestic credit to private sectors promote CO2 emissions, while the positive shocks moderate the emissions. The findings also uncover eco-digitalization as a viable tool to achieve environmental sustainability in the E7 economies. Furthermore, the measures of fiscal policy have differing impacts on environmental sustainability as evident from the positive and negative signs attributed to government expenditure and tax revenue. Compensatory growth represents the ability of plants to counteract the negative consequences of herbivore damage, contributing to the sustainable development of agriculture. Minor changes in compensatory growth due to environmental changes may significantly impact the structure and functionality of ecosystems, especially for agriculture in a semiarid region. However, there is a lack of systematic quantitative summaries and reviews on compensatory growth mechanisms, especially regarding how they might respond to global environmental changes (e.g. climate warming, drought, nutrient variation, and elevated CO2). This paper summarizes the types of physio-ecological responses of plant compensatory growth to defoliation and their characteristics through a systematic review of existing literature. The review shows that damaged plants that undergo variations in morphological and physiological traits, such as enhanced photosynthesis, increased branching, and altered biomass allocation, may mitigate injury or produce overcompensatory growth. Moderate disturbance and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus infection rates are beneficial for overcompensation. I further discuss how plant compensatory growth is affected by global change factors, concluding that adequate nutrients and water supply are crucial factors influencing overcompensation. This summary can advance our understanding of the response patterns and mechanisms underlying plant compensatory growth, which is vital for gaining insight into the regenerative capacity of plants and promoting sustainable agricultural development under global environmental changes. Environmental temperature affects ectotherm performance and fitness because physiological performance increases up to a sublethal optimum temperature; this is not fixed, but depends on the species and individual history. We explored the influence of species identity, size and thermal history on thermal tolerance in four species of littorinid snails in South Africa. As expected, heat coma temperature (HCT) was lower than the lethal temperatures (LT50), and was greater for juveniles, while LT50 was greater for adults. The ranking by both metrics was Echinolittorina natalensis > Littoraria glabrata > Afrolittorina africana > A. knysnaensis, reflecting their biogeographical distributions. No species showed an effect of laboratory acclimation for 14 days at temperatures from 20 to 35 °C, though HCT was lower for field fresh individuals than for all other treatments. Nor was there acclimatisation of LT50 between seasons. Bioregion is a proxy for lifetime acclimatisation yet the Afrolittorina species showed nonsignificant differences between conspecifics from different regions. The effect of size differed between the two metrics, and field fresh individuals showed lower HCT values than laboratory-treated individuals—which taken together indicates the need for care when interpreting the results of lab work. The thermal tolerances of these species reflect their biogeography and appear fixed with little or no plasticity, rendering these littorinids vulnerable to future climate warming. Climate change impacts are characterized by their differential treatment of diverse age groups and generations. Although both the old and the young are particularly vulnerable to climate change, it is the younger and unborn generations that will suffer the longest. Consequently, the youth are perceived as leaders of the climate movement. This study developed and evaluated a measure to assess the perceived role of younger people in climate action. The measure consists of three items that assess the perceived role of younger people as positive, and two items that assess their perceived role as a nuisance. The measure demonstrated adequate reliability and validity. The findings highlight the presence of both positive and negative perceptions of younger people in the context of climate change.
