Relying upon the Pasinettian notion of vertical integration (Pasinetti, L. 1981. Structural Change, and Economic Growth: A Theoretical Essay on the Dynamics of the Wealth of Nations. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press), we develop a disaggregated version of the post-Kaleckian (Bhaduri, A. and S. Marglin. 1990. 'Unemployment and the Real Wage: The Economic Basis for Contesting Political Ideologies.' Cambridge Journal of Economics 14 (4): 375–393) approach to economic growth. With this analysis, the structural changes are conditioned not only to patterns of evolving demand but also to the distributive features of the economy. Considering oligopolist power and under-capacity utilization within the structural economic dynamic framework allows for heterogeneous final demand and mark-ups, with the profit margins of the consumption sector depending on the mark-up of the corresponding investment sector. To evaluate the balance in patients with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and knee osteoarthrosis (KOA), measured by postural stability computerized evaluation (PSCE), and to evaluate the effect of post-TKA patients' characteristics in their performance on PSCE. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted in two sets of patients: (A) patients with KOA and primary TKA surgery scheduled and (B) patients who underwent primary TKA >9 months. Sociodemographic, radiographic, clinical and PSCE parameters (using the Biodex Balance System) were assessed. Post-TKA patients placed more load on the replaced knee than the contralateral osteoarthritic knee (p = 0.027). They had less imbalance on the balance tests performed with the eyes open, on stable (p = 0.032), and unstable platforms (p = 0.022). These patients also showed better postural stability in monopodalic stance, both standing on the TKA (p = 0.010) and contralateral knee (p = 0.017). Age, weight, pain on the operated knee, extension deficit on the operated knee, and Berg Balance Scale scores on post-TKA patients were significantly associated with their performance on PSCE tests. PSCE can be useful to quantify the balance of post-TKA and KOA patients. Total knee arthroplasty is the definitive treatment for knee osteoarthrosis and it has several benefits, but its effect on balance is still unknown. Postural stability computerized evaluation is used to evaluate balance on vestibular diseases and it has been recently studied on musculoskeletal conditions. Rowing performance depends on the design and building materials used for competition. Recently, attempting to improve rowing performance, the Randall foil has been attached to the top edge of a rowing Big blade, making it spoon shaped. The current study aimed to analyse the differences between Big blades with and without Randall foils in force-related variables. Nineteen rowers performed two bouts of 90 s at maximal effort tethered rowing and differences were found in cycle average peak force (4.33 ± 1.46 vs. 5.26 ± 1.57 N/kg), propulsive cycle average time (1.79 ± 0.38 vs. 1.52 ± 0.24 N/kg.s) and rate of force development (8.79 ± 4.75 vs. 12.07 ± 4.60 N/kg/s) for Big blades with and without foils (respectively). Differences were also observed between the middle (4.79 ± 1.21 vs. 4.08 ± 1.48 N/kg) and final phases (4.86 ± 1.45 vs. 4.04 ± 1.47 N/kg) of the rowing effort for the cycle average peak force of Big blades with and without Randall foils. Data suggest a positive effect of these foils on the force–time curve profile. Future studies should focus on testing its influence on free on-water rowing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Swimming performance is likely influenced by strength, but differences between butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and front crawl, as well as between novice and expert swimmers, are unclear. We have examined the associations between sprint performances, upper and lower limb strength, and anthropometric characteristics in 14 (six males and eight females) non-elite and 16 (nine males and seven females) elite-level swimmers. After an anthropometric characterisation, participants performed four 25 m maximal swims (one per technique) with 10 min intervals, right and left shoulder flexion/extension isokinetic testing at 90 and 300º/s angular velocities and three countermovement jumps. Pearson correlation analysis showed that sprint times were moderate–largely negatively correlated with upper and lower limb strength and power (r ± 95%CI = 0.39 ± 0.26–0.77 ± 0.13, p < 0.05). Elite swimmers higher strength levels were associated with longer stroke length in butterfly and front crawl, and with higher stroke rate in backstroke and breaststroke (r ± 95%CI = 0.37 ± 0.32–0.68 ± 0.21; p < 0.05). Butterfly, backstroke and front crawl sprint times were moderate–largely negatively related with arm span (r ± 95%CI = 0.37 ± 0.26, 0.39 ± 0.25 and 0.69 ± 0.17, p < 0.05). The predictive model indicated that higher dry-land strength values distinguished elite from non-elite swimmers (r2 = 0.67–0.81; p < 0.001). This association was not observed per performance level and per sex, confirming that sprint swimming performance levels can be differentiated by dry-land strength testing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Theropods comprise a successful group of mostly predatory dinosaurs with varied growth rates that colonized all continents. Much research has addressed the histology of the Global North's Mesozoic populations, especially coelurosaurians and allosauroids. However, little has been done to understand the histological patterns of the Gondwanan populations, especially abelisauroids. Previous studies detected disparate (parallel-fibered or fibrolamellar) bone profiles between noasaurids and abelisaurids but did not include broader quantitative analyses. Here we describe the femoral histology of a mid-sized abelisaurid from the Upper Cretaceous Serra da Galga Formation, Bauru Group, Southeast Brazil. Despite the harsh semiarid paleotropical context, our specimen shows a growth rate more similar to the Patagonian abelisaurids, challenging a previous hypothesis on environmental pressure selecting taxa with lower growth rates and parallel-fibered bone tissue. We also bring data to bear from several taxa to test the hypothesis of tissue differentiation within abelisauroid clades. Our logistic regression and correlation analyses show that the variation in histology in noasaurids and abelisaurids can be explained by body size and phylogeny when considering fibrolamellar tissue, but not parallel-fibered tissue. A decrease in growth rate through the deposition of parallel-fibered bone tissue may be an example of evolutionary convergence between noasaurids and some small-bodied sauropods. The aim of this study was to investigate if increased load carriage, in male military personnel, can affect the lower limbs kinematics. Twelve male military volunteers from the Portuguese Army were recruited and evaluated in an unloaded and loaded gait condition. Linear kinematics and lower limbs joint angle at heel strike, midstance and toe off were calculated. The stance, swing and double support times were found to be different between load conditions (p < 0.05). There was an interaction between load and limb (p < 0.05) for joint angles, during midstance, with limbs performing different movements in the frontal plane during loaded gait. Load increase had a different effect on the right knee, with a reduction in the abduction (valgus). This study may be beneficial in offering suggestion to improve the performance of gait with load and in an attempt to help prevent possible injuries. Practitioner summary: Increased load can affect lower limbs of male soldiers at the pelvic, hip and knee angles on the frontal plane, which can alter the joint force distribution. While these alterations may indicate protective mechanics, load management procedures should be implemented along with gait monitoring to avoid negative effects in performance. In this contribution, we re-describe the holotype (i.e., the posterior fragment of a left dentary with dentition) of Cargninia enigmatica from the Riograndia Assemblage Zone, Candelária Sequence, Santa Maria Supersequence (Upper Triassic, Brazil), originally considered a member of the Lepidosauria. In addition, two other specimens of lepidosauromorphs from the same locality are described and compared. Broad comparisons suggest that C. enigmatica possesses a unique combination of features, but several key features are widely distributed among basal non-rhynchocephalian lepidosauromorphs and kuehneosaurids. Thus, two possible scenarios are proposed: (1) Cargninia is a basal non-lepidosaurian lepidosauromorph, or (2) it is a basal lepidosaurian. The new specimens are a portion of a right maxilla with teeth (in two fragments) and a fragment of a dentary with teeth. The first specimen is identified as a lepidosauromorph because the maxilla cannot be directly compared with the holotype of C. enigmatica and it is difficult to evaluate if the differences in the dentition (upper versus lower teeth) are the result of intra- or interspecific variation. The dentary, on the other hand, is tentatively referred to C. enigmatica. These specimens together add new clues to understanding the early evolution of Lepidosauromorpha. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and purpose: To review the methods used to analyze the kinematics of upper limbs (ULs) of healthy and poststroke adults, namely the motion capture systems and kinematic metrics. Summary of review: A database of articles published in the last decade was compiled using the following search terms combinations: ("upper extremity" OR "upper limb" OR arm) AND (kinematic OR motion OR movement) AND (analysis OR assessment OR measurement). The articles included in this review: (1) had the purpose to analyze objectively three-dimension kinematics of ULs, (2) studied functional movements or activities of daily living involving ULs, and (3) studied healthy and/or poststroke adults. Fourteen articles were included (four studied a healthy sample, three analyzed poststroke patients, and seven examined both poststroke and healthy participants). Conclusion: Most articles used optoelectronic systems with markers; however, the presentation of laboratory and task-specific errors is missing. Markerless systems, used in some studies, seem to be promising alternatives for implementation of kinematic analysis in hospitals and clinics, but the literature proving their validity is scarce. Most articles analyzed "joint kinematics" and "end-point kinematics," mainly related with reaching. The different stroke locations of the samples were not considered in their analysis and only three articles described their psychometric properties. Implication of key findings: Future research should validate portable motion capture systems, document their specific error at the acquisition place and for the studied task, include grasping and manipulation analysis, and describe psychometric properties. The aim of the present study was to determine which approach to calculating shoulder ratios is the most sensitive for determining shoulder torque imbalance in handball players. Twenty-six participants (handball athletes, n = 13; healthy controls, n = 13) performed isokinetic concentric and eccentric shoulder internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER) assessment at 60, 180 and 300°/s. We used eight approaches to calculating shoulder ratios: four concentric (i.e. concentric ER torque divided by concentric IR torque), and four functional (i.e. eccentric ER torque divided by concentric IR torque) at the velocities of 60, 180 and 300°/s for both IR and ER, and combining 60°/s of ER and 300°/s of IR. A three factorial ANOVA (factors: shoulder ratios, upper limb sides, and groups) along with Tukey's post-hoc analysis, and effect sizes were calculated. The findings suggested the functional shoulder ratio combining 60°/s of ER and 300°/s of IR is the most sensitive to detect differences between upper limbs for handball players, and between players and controls for the dominant side. The functional shoulder ratio combining 60°/s of ER with 300°/s of IR seems to present advantages over the other approaches for identifying upper limb asymmetries and differences in shoulder torque balance related to throwing. Guidance systems exist within learning, working and welfare cultures, which are upheld by prevailing institutions and stakeholders. Implementing a lifelong approach questions rooted codes and idiosyncrasies of the sectors across which guidance is distributed. To support individuals' careers, unlock their potential and increase their contribution to the economy i.e. support their process of becoming, lifelong guidance must strive for effective systems' integration across policy fields, cultures and organisations. This article departs from national experiences and discusses how cultures and institutional contexts generate resistance to change, but can also be the departure point for the successful development of lifelong support to people's careers. Tooth marks on sandstone in an area of the Cerrado Biome are reported, indicating geophagy. The tooth marks were found on reddish sandstones cropping out in a pasture environment with typical components of the Cerrado Biome, in the Municipality of Campina Verde, Triângulo Mineiro region (west Minas Gerais State, Brazil). Studies have shown that the soil of the Cerrado is acid, with a low concentration of nutrients and minerals (also present in the plants living on this environment), which usually produce an alimentary deficiency in herbivorous animals. Therefore, these tooth marks indicate geophagy, in order to extract extra minerals from these sandstone levels, which have a high concentration of calcium carbonate and iron. The tooth marks consist of two parallel concave grooves and a medial prominent crest which results from the action of the incisors of mammals. Although the identification of the gnawing species for these sets of tooth marks are estimates at best, after wide comparisons we tentatively suggest that the tooth marks are most likely the result of the action of the incisors of rodents, such asDasyproctaorCoendou. Focusing on the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the influential Brazilian newspapers O Globo, with a daily circulation of 281,800 and Folha de Sao Paulo, with a daily circulation of 257,800, reported the results of the competitions, commented on Chinese culture and history and criticized the Chinese government. In Brazil last year, these newspapers' sales increased by 11.8 per cent and were the highest in Latin America with around 4.39 million newspapers circulating every day in Brazil. In order to compare the contents of the influential newspapers O Globo and Folha de Sao Paulo, we translate some relevant passages of the Olympic news and reports and criticize both Brazilian daily newspapers. We also examine the print media's reports on the Beijing Olympics in August 2008. The results aim to show fragments from the texts published between 1 and 25 August 2008, in A Tarde, the newspaper with the largest circulation in the state of Bahia, Brazil. We also analyse video related to the Beijing Olympics available on YouTube and examine comments and news articles on Brazilian sites during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Beach volleyball (BV) is an intermittent sport characterised by short-duration and highly demanding activities with low intensity periods. Establishing if players’ jump ability is influenced by sand granulometry is a useful information for sport scientists, coaches and players. This study aimed to assess the possible differences in the kinetics parameters of the vertical jump on different types of sand performed by BV players. Twelve elite female players performed six countermovement jumps (CMJs) in three different surface conditions (fine sand, reference, coarse sand) in a random counterbalanced order (216 jumps). A generalised mixed model approach detected differences for CMJ model in total duration (p: 0.016), eccentric phase duration (p: 0.007), concentric phase duration (p: 0.011), time to peak power (p: < 0.001), time to peak force (p: 0.014), maximum rate force development concentric phase (p: 0.004), maximum velocity (p: 0.028) and peak power eccentric (p: 0.018). Coarse sand decreases the time spent jumping compared to fine sand, without a penalty to jump height. Coaches and athletes should take this information into account to enhance their understanding of practice strategies and game conditions. AbstractThis study aimed to systematically review and summarise the evidence about the effect of muscle fatigue on the knee proprioception of trained and non-trained individuals. A search in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and EBSCO databases and Google Scholar was conducted using the expression: “fatigue” AND (“proprioception” OR “position sense” OR “repositioning” OR “kinesthesia” OR “detection of passive motion” OR “force sense” OR “sense of resistance”) AND “knee”. Forty-two studies were included. Regarding joint-position sense, higher repositioning errors were reported after local and general protocols. Kinesthesia seems to be more affected when fatigue is induced locally, and force sense when assessed at higher target forces and after eccentric protocols.
