Objective: A reduction in fetal movements has been proposed to identify pregnancies at risk of stillbirth. The utility of this approach is limited by variability in maternal perception of fetal movements. We aimed to determine the proportion of fetal movements observed by ultrasound that were maternally perceived and identify factors that affected maternal perception.Method: During 30-min recordings, women (n = 21) depressed a trigger upon perception of a fetal movement, while an ultrasound operator recorded observed movements according to the fetal parts involved.Results: Women perceived between 2.4% and 81.0% (median 44.8%) of movements observed on scan. Synchronous movement of the fetal trunk and limbs was more likely to be recognized than either part in isolation (60.5% versus 37.5% and 30%, respectively). The ultrasound operator judged the fetus to be moving for a significantly greater proportion of the time than mothers (median 1.5% of total recording time versus 0.7%). There was no significant relationship between the ability to perceive fetal activity and placental site, parity, amniotic fluid index or maternal body mass index.Conclusion: Variations in maternal perception of fetal movements may affect detection of a clinically significant reduction in fetal movements for some women. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and fetal activity. Materials and methods: We prospectively studied 18 pregnant patients with GDM and 20 pregnant patients with normal glucose screening test. An ultrasound equipmentwas used to perform a 30 min transabdominal sonographic recording for each patient. Each ultrasound exam was recorded using a DVD recorder. Fetal activity was analyzed using duration and number of episodes of fetal breathing and body movements. The recordings were analyzed using a stopwatch in order to accurately evaluate each recording. The data was statistically analyzed using the parametric and non-parametric t-test. Results: The results of the study indicated that there was a significant correlation ( p = 0.007) between the duration of fetal breathing movement and GDM. Fetuses of mothers suffering from GDM had a significantly longer duration of fetal breathing movements compared with fetuses of non diabetic mothers. In addition, the total duration of fetal activity (time of fetal body movements plus fetal breathing movements) was significantly higher ( p = 0.005) in GDM compared with non GDM pregnancies. The difference in fetal body movements between GDM and normal pregnancies was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study support the hypothesis that GDM has a direct influence on fetal activity. The significance of this finding should be further evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To examine effects of mother's anxiety and depression and associated risk factors during early pregnancy on fetal growth and activity. Repeated measures of mother's anxiety (State-Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S)) and depression (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS)) and related socio demographics and substance consumption were obtained at the 1st and 2nd pregnancy trimesters, and fetus' ( N = 147) biometric data and behavior was recorded during ultrasound examination at 20–22 weeks of gestation. Higher anxiety symptoms were associated to both lower fetal growth and higher fetal activity. While lower education, primiparity, adolescent motherhood, and tobacco consumption predicted lower fetal growth, coffee intake predicted lower fetal activity. Vulnerability of fetal development to mother's psychological symptoms as well as to other sociodemographic and substance consumption risk factors during early and mid pregnancy is suggested.
