The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of edema, pain, and range of motion of knee by sterile kinesio taping within 3 days after ACLR. We hypothesized that sterile taping which is a new material of kinesio taping reduces knee pain and swelling and improves knee range of movement after ACLR. Fifty-sixth subjects who underwent an elective ACLR with were randomized into intervention(n=28) and control groups(n=28). Subjects from both groups received standardized postoperative physiotherapy. Pain by VAS, total ROM of the knee, and circumferential girth were measured at the first, second- and third-day post-surgery. There were found statistically significant differences in all study parameters within each group. Comparison of the study parameters between both groups revealed a statistical significance at various time points except the reduction of pain in the taping group in the early postoperative phase (between the first and second day) (P<0.05). There was no statistical significance in the reduction of swelling or improvement of knee total ROM with kinesio taping. This study showed that sterile kinesio taping reduced pain, improved ROM of the knee and decreased edema in the early post-operative period after ACLR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Controlling early symptoms following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is critical for long-term outcomes. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) and Kinesio Taping®(KT) applications in terms of reducing lower extremity edema, pain, and improving function in the early postoperative period of TKA. Forty-five female patients with unilateral TKA were allocated to an additional postoperative MLD treatment (n = 15) with exercises, additional Kinesio Taping® (n = 15) with exercises, or exercise-only (n = 15). Lower limb circumference, range of motion (ROM), pain level, and knee osteoarthritis outcome score (KOOS) were compared. Both MLD (p <.001; effect size range = 0.65–0.87) and the KT group (p =.001; effect size range = 0.74–0.78) had lower edema and pain levels (MLD group: p <.001; effect size = 0.84; KT group: p <.001; effect size = 0.78) compared to the control group on postoperative day 4. These beneficial effects continued only two weeks postoperatively, and no group differences were found by six weeks. Additional MLD or KT applications to standard exercises were both effective on early-stage lower extremity edema and pain levels. Gastrointestinal toxicity, including diarrhea and inflammation, is commonly observed with the use of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Several studies have shown that polysaccharides are interesting bioactive macromolecules for the treatment or prevention of gastrointestinal diseases. Therefore, in this study, the effect of a polysaccharide fraction from a mixture of two Guavira species (Campomanesia adamantium and Campomanesia pubescens), referred to here as CPW, on the development of intestinal mucositis was investigated. Intestinal mucositis was induced by a single injection of 5-FU (450 mg/kg), and various doses of CPW (3-100 mg/kg) were tested. CPW attenuated disease development and prevented small bowel dysmotility and colon shortening. CPW prevented the increase in villi width, crypt depth, and mucosal thickness in the duodenum, but not in the colon. Preservation of mucus, reduction of oxidative stress, inflammation, and prevention of the 5-FU-induced enlargement and swelling of the spleen were observed. In conclusion, this study demonstrated for the first time that CPW alleviates the intestinal damage induced by 5-FU and could be used as an adjuvant strategy during chemotherapy. Tubarial glands (TGs) are a collection of unidentified salivary glands overlying the torus tubarius in the nasopharyngeal wall. Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a chronic fibroinflammatory state that often has multiple organ involvement. Involvement of the head and neck, especially the salivary glands, is common in IgG4-RD. This study aimed to elucidate the clinical significance of TGs in IgG4-RD. We investigated the local findings of TGs in ten patients with IgG4-RD. Nasopharyngeal endoscopic examination revealed oedematous swelling of the nasopharyngeal wall surrounding the TGs, which improved after steroid treatment. Moreover, sonotubometry showed a stenotic pattern in three out of seven patients with IgG4-RD. TGs may be involved in IgG4-RD. The swollen TGs may be responsible for obstructive Eustachian tube dysfunction. Further studies are required to clarify the clinical significance and physiological roles of TGs in IgG4-RD. Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a treatment-related inflammatory complication in breast cancer survivors (BCSs). This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of synbiotic supplementation on serum concentrations of IL-10, TGF-β, VEGF, adiponectin, and edema volume among overweight or obese BCSs with lymphedema following a low-calorie diet (LCD). In a randomized double-blind, controlled clinical trial, 88 obese and overweight BCSs women were randomized to synbiotic supplement (n = 44) or placebo (n = 44) groups and both groups followed an LCD for 10 weeks. Pre- and post-intervention comparisons were made regarding the anti-inflammatory markers which included IL-10, TGF-β, VEGF, adiponectin, edema volume, and anthropometric measurements. Also, the same factors were analyzed to find inter-group disparities. There were no significant differences among participants in the baseline, except for IL-10 and adiponectin. Post-intervention, no significant differences were observed regarding the anti-inflammatory markers, including IL-10, VEGF, adiponectin, and TGF-β between the groups. After 10 weeks of intervention edema volume significantly decreased in the synbiotic group; additionally, anthropometric measurements (body weight, BMI, body fat percent, and WC) decreased in both groups significantly (P < 0.001 and P < 0.005; respectively). Synbiotic supplementation coupled with an LCD in a 10-week intervention had beneficial effects on increasing the serum TGF-β, IL-10, and adiponectin levels in women with BCRL. Argan oil is thought to be the most expensive edible oil worldwide. It is difficult to produce and the argan tree only grows in a limited geographical area, notably Morocco and Algeria. Because it is produced by mechanical means, argan oil contains "minor" components that might be endowed with healthful effects. We investigated in vivo the anti-inflammatory activities of argan oil and its unsaponifiable fraction, using diclofenac as the control, in a carrageenan-induced rat model of inflammation. Rats were given different amounts of argan oil or its unsaponifiable fraction, by gavage. We report that argan oil and its "minor" components effectively lessen the inflammatory actions of carrageenan. Far from being "pharmacological" the actions of argan oil are comparable with those of diclofenac in the short, i.e. 4 h term. Sustained consumption of argan oil might, therefore, contribute to lessen the burden of degenerative diseases associated with higher inflammatory status. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Occupational standing is associated with musculoskeletal and venous disorders. The aim was to investigate whether lower leg oedema and muscle fatigue development differ between standing and walking and whether age, gender and standing work habituation are factors to consider. Sixty participants (15 young females, 15 young males, 15 older males, and 15 young males habituated to standing work) were included and required to stand/walk for 4.5 hours in three periods with two seated breaks. Waterplethysmography/bioelectrical impedance, muscle twitch force and surface electromyography were used to assess lower leg swelling (LLS) and muscle fatigue as well as gastrocnemius muscle activity, respectively. While standing led to LLS and muscle fatigue, walking did not. Low-level medial gastrocnemius activity was not continuous during standing. No significant influence of age, gender and standing habituation was observed. Walking can be an effective prevention measure to counteract the detrimental effects of quasi-static standing. Practitioner summary: Prolonged standing leads to lower leg oedema and muscle fatigue while walking does not. The primary cause of fatigue may be in other muscles than the medial gastrocnemius. Walking may be an effective prevention measure for health risks of occupational standing when included intermittently. The potential of rotating postures to alleviate the effects of prolonged standing and sitting postures has been advocated to attenuate the accumulation of muscle fatigue, considered a precursor to musculoskeletal disorders. We aimed to evaluate the effects of two posture rotations, both including standing, walking, sitting, on physiological and neuromotor measures. Twenty-two participants followed two posture rotations, with different rest-break distributions, for 5.25 h. Lower-leg muscle twitch force, volume, force control and discomfort perception were evaluated during and after work exposure on two non-consecutive days. Significant changes in all measures indicate a detrimental effect in lower-leg long-lasting muscle fatigue, oedema, performance and discomfort after 5 h for both exposures. However, for both exposures recovery was significant 1 h and 15 h post-workday. Differences between the two rotation schedules were not significant. Hence, stand-walk-sit posture rotation promotes recovery of the tested measures and is likely to better prevent muscle fatigue accumulation. PCL filler can be injected in two major ways to control pain. One such method involves mixing 0.3cc of PCL filler with lidocaine, and the other is the method introduced in this report, which involves pre-injection with a tumescent solution. It is hard to reduce pain effectively with pre-mixing PCL filler with lidocaine because there may be not enough time to act lidocaine solution effect immediately for pain control. The pre-mixing method changes the properties of the original filler, especially the property of the CMC portion. Therefore, in my simple and novel technique, tumescent solution is injected, followed by PCL filler which preserves the original CMC property. This is done after sedation of the tissue by the tumescent solution and dissection of soft tissue to create a space for the ensuing PCL injection. After pre-injection with tumescent solution, histological analysis indicated that the tissue did not become irritated in response to the foreign body material (PCL filler) or the mechanical trauma caused by the needle. That is the key mechanism of the tumescent injection method for reducing tissue reaction and that may reduce pain and swelling during and after PCL filler injections. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Aim: To investigate the effect of exercise and oedema massage on the quality of life (QoL) and level of fatigue (LOF) of female patients with stage II and III breast cancer. Method: Twenty-seven female patients with stage II and III breast cancer whose ages ranged from 33 to 80 years participated in this study. Participants were randomized into two groups A and B. Participants in groups A received therapeutic exercises and massage, while those in group B received only therapeutic exercises. QoL and LOF were assessed before and 6 weeks after intervention, using a European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer quality of life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and Energy/Fatigue Scale, respectively. Result: There was a significant improvement ( p < 0.05) between the pre- and post-intervention QoL scores of participants in study group A, and between the post-intervention QoL scores of participants in study group A and control group B ( p < 0.05). There was also a significant improvement ( p < 0.05) in the LOF between the pre- and post-intervention scores for participants in groups A and B, respectively, and between the post-intervention scores of the participants in the groups A and B ( p > 0.05). Cardiomyopathy is defined as a heterogeneous group of myocardial disorders with mechanical or electrical dysfunction. Identification of the etiology is important for accurate diagnosis, treatment and prognosis, but continues to be challenging. The ability of cardiac MRI to non-invasively obtain 3D-images of unparalleled resolution without radiation exposure and to provide tissue characterization gives it a distinct advantage over any other diagnostic tool used for evaluation of cardiomyopathies. Cardiac MRI can accurately visualize cardiac morphology and function and also help identify myocardial edema, infiltration and fibrosis. It has emerged as an important diagnostic and prognostic tool in tertiary care centers for work up of patients with non-ischemic cardiomyopathies. Bulimia nervosa has many medical complications associated with the different modes of purging utilized by these patients. There also are inherent medical complications associated with chronic purging when these behaviors are abruptly discontinued. These complications experienced by a patient with bulimia nervosa when they decide to cease purging, can be a strong deterrent to successfully treating this disorder. Therefore it behooves care providers to become familiar with these complications in order to skillfully recommend strategies to help overcome the tendency to revert to purging behaviors.
