This study is aimed at developing a new ground motion (GM) intensity measure (IM) based on: (i) the shape of the response spectrum and (ii) spectral acceleration at the fundamental elastic period of the structure, Sa(T1). The proposed GM-IM is developed mainly for short period reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to near-fault (NF) pulse-like GM records. The main parameter used in the development of the proposed IM is the ratio of peak ground acceleration (PGA) to peak ground velocity (PGV) of a ground motion record. In this study, a comprehensive 3D non-linear finite element modelling procedure is presented for the simulation of reinforced concrete flat plates, retrofitted with externally bonded carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips and subjected to punching shear loads. The presented modelling procedure may be used to conduct parametric numerical analyses on the response of reinforced concrete elements similar to considered in this study. The modelling procedure is applied on: (i) a solid, un-retrofitted flat plate and (ii) eight flat plates with openings and retrofitted with externally bonded CFRP strips. In the procedure, debonding of CFRP strips from concrete surfaces is accounted for by defining appropriate bilinear shear stress–slip and normal stress–gap relationships. In the model, the corner lift-offs observed at the corners of the flat plates are also considered by defining appropriate restrains and frictional support conditions. Results obtained from the proposed modelling procedure are verified using experimental data available in the literature. From the verification, accuracy of the proposed modelling procedure is confirmed in terms of structural responses such as load displacement relationships and crack propagations of the test specimens. In this study, behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams retrofitted using carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips and anchorages is investigated by performing nonlinear finite-element (FE) analyses. The main aim of the study is testing the applicability of current FE techniques in the field of CFRP-retrofitted concrete elements. In the study, effect of CFRP strip width, presence of fan-type anchorages and CFRP patches were considered as main variables. In the study, eight RC beams with varying cross sectional properties along beam length are simulated. The simulated beams were tested in a former experimental study. The nonlinear FE analyses are conducted using the ANSYS FE software. The results obtained from the former experimental study are compared with the FE analyses results. From the results, it is observed that when properly modeled, FE simulations are efficient tools to estimate the nonlinear behavior of CFRP-retrofitted RC beams and similar structural elements.
