A novel compact UWB antenna with a stub extending in the ground is proposed. The stub extending from the ground generates a new resonant frequency at the lower frequency band, which can be used to increase the bandwidth. Different from the normal monopole antenna, the antenna can be regarded as a dual-antenna system. At the lower frequency, the stub is excited for radiation, but at other frequency bands, the patch at the end of the feeding line is excited and works as radiator. The lower resonant frequency can be controlled easily by adjusting the length of the stub and slot without changing the size of the antenna. The overall size of antenna is only 26?mm?×?10?mm?×?0.8?mm, which is smaller than the normal monopole antenna. Current distribution is also presented to understand the mechanism of the antenna. The effect of the size of the ground is also studied. Simulated and measured results show that the antenna has broad impedance matching bandwidth, stable radiation pattern, and high radiation efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
