Parilia alcocki is a deep-sea crab inhabiting the continental shelves and slopes of the eastern Arabian Sea and western Bay of Bengal at a depth of 128–457 m. No published information is available on its population characteristics and sexual dimorphism. The present study provides the first-ever insight into the population differentiation and sexual dimorphism in P. alcocki using Geometric Morphometric Analysis (GMA) of carapace and chela shapes. The Arabian Sea population possessed carapaces with a more pointed anterior and a rounded posterior margin as compared with the Bay of Bengal population. When chela shapes are compared, the Arabian Sea crabs possess an elongated, narrower arm, and shorter pollex. The observed shape variations could be attributed to heterogeneous habitat conditions in these regions which influence feeding and predation. Sexual dimorphism in carapace shapes was indiscernible. However, males exhibited wider intra-specific variations in carapace shape and show a larger average and maximum size for linear carapace measurements. Also, male crabs possess elongated and narrow arms and shorter pollex, whereas the females have a broader and shorter arm and longer pollex, indicative of classical sexual size dimorphism. Reducing multiple contaminations in reflection seismic data remains one of the primary challenges in marine seismic data processing. Besides geological settings, its effectiveness is also dependent on the multiple removal methods. In this study, we undertook two legacy 2D multi-channel seismic data crossing the accretionary wedge off SW Taiwan to test the efficiency of various multiple-attenuation scenarios. The tectonic domain has resulted from the incipient arc-continent collision between the northern rifted margin of the South China Sea and the Luzon volcanic arc. The wedge extends from shallow water to deep water bathymetries, hence promoting both short-period and long-period multiples within the seismic records. A cascade of de-multiple methods was tested to attenuate multiple energy under various seafloor bathymetry and tectonic areas. The first step relies on the periodicity nature of multiples. Spatial dependent predictive deconvolution in the x-t domain was performed to attenuate reverberations and improve temporal resolution in the time domain. Wave-equation multiple attenuation (WEMA) was applied to suppress the water layer multiples based on a combination of numerical wave extrapolation in the shot domain through water layer and water bottom reflectivity. Surface-related multiple elimination (SRME) aimed to attenuate the residual water bottom multiple and peg-leg multiple by assuming surface-related multiples can be kinematically predicted via convolution of pre-stack seismic traces at possible surface multiple reflection locations. The second step exploits the spatial move-out difference behavior between primaries and multiples. Parabolic Radon transforms far-offset multiples by subtracting noise energy in the τ-p domain, whereas the frequency-wave number (F-K) filter aimed to eliminate any residual multiples energy in the F-K domain. Predictive deconvolution improved seismic resolution and suppressed sea-bottom reverberation energy in the continental and lower wedge slopes, but not in the upper wedge slope. WEMA, Radon filter, and F-K filter reduced multiples energy both at the continental slope and wedge slope; whereas SRME made minimal impact on both areas. Since the reflection seismic datasets stretch diverse tectonic environments and water depth, there was no single multiple attenuation method capable to suppress multiples in all tectonic environments and bathymetry. Enclosed depressions, termed pockmarks, are widespread seafloor morphologies, commonly associated with fluid seepage. This study provides the first detailed documentation of pockmarks offshore the South Westland margin of the South Island/Te Waipounamu, Aotearoa New Zealand. Pockmarks are identified from multibeam bathymetry (25-m grid) through manual and semi-automated selection in water depths of 100–2600 m. Pockmarks are most concentrated at 400–850 m water depth on continental slope areas between submarine canyons. A continuum of pockmark morphologies includes – (1) large (>0.5 km2 area) and irregularly shaped pockmarks above partially infilled channels; (2) small and circular pockmarks (∼100–200 m diameter; ∼0.008–0.03 km2 area) occurring between canyons; and (3) elongated and intermediate size pockmarks, generally oriented along-slope and often occurring above buried sediment waves. Elongated pockmarks appear to have been modified by near-seafloor oceanographic and/or turbidity current flows. Pockmark features occur across many locations around Aotearoa, including both the eastern and western margins. Some similar pockmark morphologies are identified in these different tectonic, sedimentary, and oceanographic settings, suggesting that there may be some similarity in formative mechanisms, but clear mechanisms leading to their formation remain enigmatic. The morphology and development of several submarine canyons offshore southeast South Australia and western Victoria are described. The existence of three of those canyons had been foreshadowed in 1963 by N. Boutakoff, who thought them to be linked to ancient courses of the Glenelg River. These canyons occur on the outer continental shelf where their heads are situated in depths shallower than 1000 m. Sinuous channels are visible within two of the canyon heads, indicating that water and sediment may still travel downslope and cause erosion, and thus are geologically recent. Several other canyons are also documented and named. Two canyons are confined to depths below 3000 m; they may be much older and seem not to be linked to ancient river courses. They are also oblique to the upper canyons. The other characteristic feature of the area is the presence of numerous undersea slides. These occur at three specific depths (∼1200, ∼1500 and ∼1800 m) and are coincident with stratigraphic horizons in which continental groundwater flows have been identified in adjacent exploratory oil and gas wells drilled into the continental shelf. Sapping of groundwater may likely have occurred during very wet periods inland. We suggest that these undersea slides could be the first step in the formation of deep-sea canyons that are not necessarily linked to ancient river courses. We also postulate that the 'sliding' of large piles of sediment down the continental slope has tsunamigenic potential and may have occurred during significant wet climate on land. Several deep-sea canyons and numerous submarine slides are documented along the continental shelf offshore the coastline of western Victoria and southeast South Australia in the Otway Basin. Some of these canyons are linked to previous courses of the Glenelg River, which changed over time in response to regional tectonic changes such as faulting and significant upwarping. The orientation of most of these canyons tends to align with ancient terrestrial lineaments that likely extend offshore. Sinuous channels within the upper canyon reaches are clearly visible and not infilled with sediment; they are likely active and linked to ongoing groundwater seepage. It is proposed that the underwater slides are generated by the submarine discharge of continental groundwater on the continental slope, at three specific water depths with discharge associated with particular lithologies. NASA's Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP), Visible Infra-red Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) data utilized to detect night time lights (NTL) radiances and fishing boat pixels using VIIRS boat detection (VBD) approach. Study attempted for first time in Indian waters to detect night time fishing boats during 2017 along with chlorophyll and sea surface temperature (SST). Night-time fishing observed higher in Arabian Sea (AS) compared to Bay of Bengal (BoB). The reason likely the shallower bathymetry (50–200meters) of AS, broader continental shelf and more biological productivity, compared to BoB's narrow and steep continental slope and less productive water. AS night time fishery observed season-dependent (December–May) with VBD pixels ranging 100–300, wherein BoB distribution is sparse, <30 VBD pixels. In AS, moderate/high chlorophyll (0.2–1.2 mgm−3), moderate SST (27–30.5 °C) and non-cloudy months observed suitable for night time fishing. From the BIOPEARL 1 and 2 Programs to the Amundsen and Scotia Seas a large series of Tanaidacea was collected using an epibenthic sled. We carried out a thorough morphological analysis of 169 individuals and provide a description of 14 pseudotanaid species distributed in three genera. Twelve species of the genus Pseudotanais are represented by three morphogroups: "affinis+longisetosus", "denticulatus+abathagastor", and "forcipatus". We provide a redescription of Akanthinotanais gaussi, supplement the definitions of the genera Akanthinotanais and Beksitanais, and transfer Pseudotanais abyssi to the genus Beksitanais. Based on the literature and new data, we summarize knowledge of the Antarctic Pseudotanaidae and discuss this family's spatial and bathymetric distribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we present geomorphological hazard mapping of the San Vito Peninsula offshore (Sicilian margin of Tyrrhenian Sea), characterised by a very narrow continental shelf and a very dipping, tectonically active continental slope, no far from a seismogenic belt. The data set consists of morpho-bathymetric models achieved by means of multibeam survey and scattered high resolution seismic profiles. The morpho-bathymetric study highlighted some potential sites of geomorphological hazards, the most representative of which are: (i) two canyons developing from the upper slope off San Vito Cape down to the Erice basin; (ii) a dense network of small incisions across the upper slope; (iii) a very active landslide, developed onland and extending in the continental shelf close to the Scopello village. The geomorphological features that can generate submarine hazard are represented by: unstable sediment packages into canyon heads or along the upper slope; submarine canyons with regressive erosion; coastal landslides. Physicochemical conditions are proper to form gas hydrate and free gas in the Caspian Sea which are considered both for geohazard assessment and future possible source of energy. Gas migration, hydrate formation and decomposition cause different types of features to form in the seabed and sediments which can be affected by geological and physical conditions of sea. In this study, high-resolution marine seismoacoustic profiles were interpreted to investigate features formed by gas hydrate and free gas and assess their characteristics in the continental slope and abyssal plain of the middle Caspian Sea. A mud volcano, gas chimneys, pockmarks, gas pipes, sediment disturbances, a crater, a giant landslide and a big gentle diapir were investigated and reported in the present study. The geological and physical conditions including bathymetry, tectonic activity, sediments supply and water depth are different in the continental slope and abyssal plain, thereby the features of these two environments were compared to understand the effect of different conditions. With the continuous expansion of energy demand, the deep-water continental slope in the northern South China Sea has become one of the significant offshore oil and gas exploration regions. The frequent occurrence of marine geological hazards in this region, especially submarine landslides, can cause serious damage to engineering facilities. However, there have been few studies on the stability of the northern continental slope of the South China Sea; these studies mainly focused on a specific submarine slope or small-range evaluation, resulting in a lack of large-scale and quantitative understanding. Hence, considering the variation in the physical and mechanical properties of marine soils with depth, formulas for calculating the safety factor of submarine slopes by an infinite sliding model are established, and the factors affecting slope stability such as soil properties, slope gradient and horizontal seismic action are systematically investigated. Using GIS techniques, the terrain slope gradients and a historical seismic database of the northern South China Sea are obtained. Combined with soil mechanical parameters, a regional stability evaluation of the northern continental slope is carried out. Furthermore, the distribution of risk zones is given. On the whole, under strong seismic action, large-scale submarine slope instability occurs and must be highly considered when assessing risk. The natural vegetation of the western Black Sea coast is dominated by temperate forest communities of I Quercus cerris i L. and I Q. frainetto i Ten., together with I Q. polycarpa i Schur. and I Carpinus betulus i L. (Bondev [1]; Filipova-Marinova et al. [3]). The Black Sea is an intercontinental enclosed-type marine basin. Steppe vegetation of the Dobrudzha region is dominated by I Festuca pseudovina i Hack. ex Wiseb., I Chrysopogon gryllus i (L.) Trin., I Botriochloa ischaemum i (L.) Keng, and I Poa bulbosa i L. Elements of the Mediterranean vegetation are I Paliurus spina-christi i Mill., I Carpinus orientalis i Mill., I Phillyrea latifolia i L., and I Fraxinus ornus i L. Understanding fluid flow structures in a rifted basin may enhance our knowledge of their origination and evolution. Through geochemical analysis and seismic interpretation, different fluid flow features are identified in the central depression of Qiongdongnan basin, northern South China Sea. These structures include mud diapir, gas chimney, hydrothermal pipes, faults, blowout pipes, and associated extrusions. Mud diapirs are primarily located on the slope belts, whereas gas chimneys are on the basement highs in the southwest of the study area. Their distribution appears closely controlled by tectonic stress field and overpressure, the later is caused by hydrocarbon generation and compaction disequilibrium. High sediment overloading, weak post-rift tectonic activity, and high average geothermal gradient may contribute to the compaction disequilibrium. The occurrence of gas chimneys on the basement high suggests that lateral transportation and relief of overpressure is a significant factor. Distribution of broad hydrothermal pipes is related with the thinning continental crust and pre-existing boundary faults in the central depression. They are probably attributed to intruded sills dissolution and were caused by hydrothermal fluids vertically. Geochemical data from gas reservoirs analysis indicates that mud diapirs and gas chimneys are critical pathways for thermogenic gases, whereas hydrothermal pipes and part of the faults may act as pathways of both thermogenic and inorganic gases. The blowout pipes mainly occur in the northwestern central depression near the continental slope, where fluid flows ascend gradually from a series of Pliocene-current prograding wedge-formed units with a hydraulic fracture in shallow. Hundreds of seafloor pockmarks and mounds associated with blowout pipes located above the NE-SW elongated Pliocene-Quaternary slope-break belts. These extrusive structures indicate that fluids ascend through blowout pipes and were expelled at the present seabed. Our results indicate that fluid flow structures are probably responsible for fluid activities and must be taken into account when assessing the hydrocarbon potential, geologic hazard, and benthic ecosystem. The North Palawan Canyon is a large, previously undescribed submarine canyon that incises the continental shelf and slope of the southern South China Sea. Using multibeam bathymetric data and two-dimensional seismic reflection data, we have characterized current canyon morphology and documented lower-canyon migration in cross-section since the middle Miocene. We have also explored possible causes for the ancient migrations. The 175 km modern canyon is flanked by sediment waves outside its northern bank, and depositional lobes fan out from the canyon mouth. Over the past 15 million years, at least 20 cycles of significant canyon incising and infilling have occurred, along with significant canyon migration. This migration, as recorded in the sedimentary (seismic) record near a leftward bend in the canyon's lower reach, can be divided into three stages: southward migration during the middle Miocene (averaging 1.24 km/m.y.), northward migration during the late Miocene (1.34 km/m.y.), and stationarity since the Pliocene. The overall zigzagging pattern of the canyon thalweg (as seen in cross-section through time) results from lateral and downstream migration in an aggradational environment. The early (middle to late Miocene) rapid zigzagging migration of the lower main channel, first southward and then northward, was probably associated with the strong collision of the North Palawan Block with the Philippine Mobile Belt, which would have triggered submarine instabilities and deformed the seafloor. The more recent (Pliocene and later) slowing or cessation of canyon migration is likely the result of the now quieter tectonic setting and long-term climatic cooling and drying. Mud diapirs and gas chimneys are widely developed in continental slope areas, which can provide sufficient gas for hydrate formation, and they are important for finding natural gas hydrates. Based on the interpretation and analysis of high-resolution 2D and 3D seismic data covering the deep-water area in the Qiongdongnan Basin (QDNB), northern South China Sea, we studied the formation mechanism of mud diapirs and gas chimneys and their relationship with natural gas hydrates. Mud diapirs and gas chimneys are columnar and domelike in shape and the internal regions of these bodies have abnormal reflections characterized by fuzzy, chaotic, and blanking zones. The reflection events terminate at the rims of mud diapirs and gas chimneys with pull-up reflections and pull-down reflections, respectively. In addition, 'bright spots' and diapiric-associated faults occur adjacent to mud diapirs and gas chimneys. The rapidly deposited and deeply buried fine sediments filling in the Tertiary in deep-water areas of the QDNB and overpressure potential derived from undercompacted mudstones, as well as from the pressurization of organic matter and hydrocarbon generation, provide abundant materials and intensive driving forces for the formation of mud diapirs and gas chimneys. Bottom simulating reflectors (BSRs) with strong amplitude and high or poor continuity were recognized atop the mud diapirs and gas chimneys and in the structural highs within the same region, indicating that they have a close relationship with each other. The mud diapirs and gas chimneys and associated high-angle faults provide favourable vertical pathways for the hydrocarbons migrating from deep strata to shallow natural gas hydrate stability zones where natural gas hydrates accumulate; however, some BSRs are characterized by weak amplitude and poor continuity, which can be affected by high temperature and overpressure in the process of the mud diapir and gas chimney activities. Determining the genetic structure and population dynamics of harvested species are key aspects of effective fisheries management. New Zealand scampi (Metanephrops challengeri) is a species of nethropid lobster that supports a commercial fishery on the continental shelf and slope around New Zealand. To determine the genetic structure and historical population demography of New Zealand scampi, we sequenced a 623 base-pair fragment of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit one (CO1) from 321 individuals across six widely separated sites off the coast of mainland New Zealand and the subantarctic Auckland Islands, representing much of the species' distribution. The Auckland Islands population was found to be genetically distinct from all other sampled populations, potentially resulting from an absence of continuous suitable habitat between the central-eastern South Island and the Auckland Islands. An isolation-by-distance pattern of genetic structure was also detected. With the exception of the Mercury Islands, all sampled populations showed signs of recent population expansion, potentially linked to changes in habitat availability during the glacial-interglacial cycles of the Pleistocene. Two groups of oil slicks have been repeatedly detected in the Southern Caspian Sea, off Cape Sefidrud and close to the Iranian coast of the sea on the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by the Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-1B satellites in April–June 2018. Analysis of the SAR images together with bathymetry, geological and geophysical data in geographic information system showed that these manifestations (oil slicks) visible on the sea surface have natural origin, related to the bottom seepage phenomenon and are associated with existing hydrocarbon system. Oil slicks are concentrated over the continental slope and related to local geological formations of the sedimentary cover having oil deposits related to paleo-delta of Sefidrud River. Our evidence shows that two seeps in this area are active and repeating. It is concluded that the SAR is an excellent tool for monitoring of seepage phenomenon. Moreover, results indicate that the use of remote methods to identify offshore natural oil seeps related to existing active petroleum system can be considered as a well-accepted approach to support oil and gas exploration in frontier areas such as the South Caspian Basin. The Mentelle Basin, located off the southwestern continental Australian margin, is an under-explored deep-water basin that developed during the breakup of eastern Gondwana in the Middle Jurassic through to the Early Cretaceous. There is a high degree of uncertainty in stratigraphic interpretations of the basin owing to the lack of well and seismic data in the region. As a consequence, there has been a heavy reliance on data from the neighbouring Perth Basin to infer the geological history of the Mentelle Basin. During Expedition 369 of the International Ocean Discovery Program, a single hole was drilled with a rotary core bit to 517.10 m below seafloor at Site U1515 on the continental slope in the eastern Mentelle Basin. The aim was to sample and date the inferred Permian to Jurassic pre-breakup strata. The presence of palynomorphs including Murospora florida and Retitriletes watherooensis in the fluvio-lacustrine succession below the Valanginian breakup unconformity indicates a Jurassic to earliest Cretaceous age for the upper part of the pre-rift sedimentary succession. Notable characteristics of this succession include intervals with high percentages of total organic carbon (up to 44 wt%) and high hydrogen index values (Type I source rocks) associated with an increase in Botryococcus and other freshwater algae that accumulated in shallow lakes and waterlogged floodplains. A possible example of dinoturbation was also noted in this core. The discovery of Jurassic to earliest Cretaceous pre-breakup strata at Site U1515 suggests that Jurassic rifting was not constrained to the western depocentre of the Mentelle Basin, but also extended to a number of depocentres in the eastern Mentelle Basin. This has significant implications for the understanding of the regional tectonic history and the Mentelle Basin's petroleum potential. Study of the ecology of mesopelagic fishes is central for assessing the active biological pump in the ocean, especially in the mesopelagic layers. The use of δ13C and fatty acid analysis can help to analysis the ecology of mesopelagic fishes. Here, we analysed the fatty acid composition of mesopelagic fishes from the continental northern slope of the South China Sea (NSSCS) and compared with nearshore SCS fishes and mesopelagic fishes collected from the Southern Ocean. The mesopelagic fishes had unusually high lipids, which resulted in Δδ13C values exceeding 1‰, more than the enrichment factor in the food web. The mesopelagic fishes had higher C18:1n-9/C18:1n-7 and C20:1n-9/ C18:1n-7 ratios compared with other fishes in the SCS, which confirmed that plankton were their main dietary source. The mesopelagic fishes from SCS and Southern Ocean had different ratios of C20:5n-3/C22:6n-3 (EPA/DHA), suggesting geographical locations and diet sources had obvious influence on their fatty acid composition. The SCS mesopelagic fishes had higher C20:4n-6/C22:6n-3 (ARA/DHA) and C20:4n-6/C20:5n-3 (ARA/EPA) ratios than mesopelagic fishes in the Southern Ocean, indicating the influence of physical factors on fatty acid composition. A marine bacterial isolate, Bacillus vietnamensis sp. MSB17 from the sediments collected from the continental slope of the eastern Arabian Sea exhibited good Malachite Green (MG) decolorization ability in mineral medium supplemented with glucose and yeast extract under static conditions. The complete decolorization of dye (50 mg/L) was attained within 4 h of incubation. The activities of enzymes such as tyrosinase (0.62 IU/ml), laccase (12.02 U/ml), and manganese peroxidase (6.23 U/ml) were observed during dye degradation. UV-VIS, FT-IR, and GC-MS analysis of dye samples extracted with ethyl acetate confirmed the biodegradation of MG into methanone, [4-(dimethylamino) phenyl] phenyl- and 2, 6-bis (1, 1-dimethylethyl) phenol. The metabolites obtained from B. vietnamensis sp. MSB17 mediated MG degradation did not exhibit any microbial toxicity and phytotoxicity. The present study indicated the efficiency of Bacillus vietnamensis sp. MSB17 to effectively degrade MG, revealing its potential to be further utilized for bioremediation purposes. The generation processes and potential energy sources of internal solitary waves (ISWs) in the southern Taiwan Strait are investigated by driving a high resolution non-hydrostatic numerical model with realistic background conditions. Two main types of ISWs are clarified according to their different energy sources. One is generated by the nonlinear disintegration of remote internal tides emanating from Luzon Strait, and the other type is generated by local tide-topography interaction at the continental slope. The basic properties and evolution processes differ between these two kinds of ISWs. The waves originated from the remote internal tides at Luzon Strait have amplitudes comparable to previous field observations. In contrast, the ISWs generated locally are much weaker than observed waves, even in the presence of a steady offshore background current, which intensifies the generation of onshore ISWs. The ISWs induced by remotely generated M2 internal tides are stronger than those induced by K1 internal tides, and the fraction of internal wave energy transmitted onto the shelf is not significantly influenced by the intensity of remotely generated internal tides. A new species of lanternshark,Etmopterus alphus(Squaliformes: Etmopteridae), is described from the south-western Indian Ocean. The new species resembles other members of the ‘Etmopterus lucifer’ clade in having linear rows of dermal denticles and most closely resemblesE. mollerifrom the south-western Pacific. The new species is fairly common along the upper continental slopes off central Mozambique, at depths between 472 and 558 m, and is also found on the southern Madagascar Ridge in 650–792 m depth. It can be distinguished from other members of theE. luciferclade by a combination of characteristics, including arrangement of flank and caudal markings, dimension of flank markings and shape, size and arrangement of dermal denticles along the body. Comparative studies of the Recommendations of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in regard to the identification of the base of the continental slope region on submarine fans arguably reveal discrepancies in the approach utilized by the Commission. The base of slope off Norway was identified on the basis of a geomorphological analysis with the support of geological and geophysical data in addition to bathymetric and morphological data. Contrariwise, in the case of Brazil it appears that the absolute values of the seafloor gradients on the slope and rise are guiding the Commission's appreciation of the base of slope region. Ship-based acoustic Doppler current profiler (S-ADCP) technology, used in survey mode, has enabled nearsynoptic views of the in situ 3-D current field in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Bight to be elucidated for the first time. Data acquired by the research vessels RS Africana and RS Algoa in June 2005, September 2007, March 2009 and July 2010 are presented. Each S-ADCP dataset showed similar circulation characteristics whereby the continental slope and outer shelf of the KZN Bight were strongly influenced by the south-westward flowing Agulhas Current. This was particularly evident in the extreme north between Cape St Lucia and Richards Bay where the shelf is narrowest and velocities exceeded 200 cm s-1. The widening of the bight to the south moves the Agulhas Current further from the coast, resulting in a diminishing velocity gradient on the outer shelf which terminates around the midshelf axis. The southern region of the bight was mostly influenced by the Durban cyclonic eddy (Durban Eddy), and in June 2005 and September 2007, by a cyclonic 'swirl' that occupied the entire southern half of the KZN Bight, the latter identified by a combination of S-ADCP-, satellite-derived SST- and ocean colour data. Satellite data showed low-chlorophyll offshore water to move into this swirl and northwards along the inner- and midshelf, reaching the Thukela River. Inner-shelf circulation north of the Thukela River was weak (<20 cm s-1) and highly variable. Satellite-tracked surface drogues deployed in the Durban Eddy found their way into the northward coastal current in the KZN Bight, with velocities exceeding 90 cm s-1 at times. The drogues also highlighted the strong influence of wind, especially in the northern bight between Durnford Point and Cape St Lucia, with residence times on the shelf exceeding 14 days, suggesting this region to be of biological importance particularly for recruitment. This article addresses maritime boundary delimitation concerning the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles. The focal point is how the foot of the continental slope can be used as the point of departure in drawing the provisional equidistance line in outer continental shelf boundary delimitations between neighboring states. The article examines the strength and weaknesses of this approach and asks whether the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea indirectly rejected this approach in the 2012Bangladesh v. Research survey data collected over 24 years (1986-2009) were used to explore long-term changes in demersal fish assemblages on the west coast of South Africa. Differences in spatial (latitude and depth) and temporal (seasonal and annual) factors were examined using multivariate analyses. Fish assemblages are clearly influenced by depth, with a distinct change in the region of the shelf break between 300 m and 400 m. There are also geographic differences in fish assemblage from north to south. Multivariate analyses show two clear temporal changes in assemblages, first in the early 1990s and second in the mid-2000s, although the latter change may be confounded by a concurrent change in survey trawl gear. The abundance of three fast-growing, early-maturing species increased over the study period whereas that of two slow-growing, long-lived species decreased, supporting the hypothesis of an increase in fast-growing, early-maturing species and a decline in slow-growing, long-lived species in fished systems. Shifts in demersal fish assemblages coincide temporally with spatial shifts observed in West Coast rock lobster Jasus lalandii and with regime shifts in the pelagic ecosystem. Despite its importance in carbon mineralization pathways, relatively little is known about sulfate reduction along a continental slope and rise. We investigated the temporal and spatial variations and controls of sulfate reduction rates (SRRs) in the continental margin sediment of the Ulleung basin (UB), off the southeast Korean upwelling system in the East Sea. SRRs ranged from 1.22 to 8.07 mmol m-2 d-1 at the slope sites and from 0.69 to 3.18 mmol m-2 d-1 at the basin sites. These values were exceptionally higher than those observed within other marginal seas and were comparable to SRR values at the same depth range in the Peruvian and Chilean upwelling systems. The high sulfate reduction in the UB was attributable to enhanced primary production in the water column associated with coastal upwelling and a high export flux of large organic particles into the basin via the Ulleung warm eddy. The depth integrated SRR was approximately 4 times higher in the highly productive spring (4.91 ± 2.55 mmol m-2 d-1) than during the summer, which exhibited a stratified water column (1.28 ± 0.48 mmol m-2 d-1). In the meantime, despite the high organic carbon content (> 2.5% dry wt.) in the UB, the SRR was consistently suppressed in the Mn oxide-enriched (174 μ mol cm-3) surface sediments of the continental rise. Overall, these results indicate that the production of organic carbon in the water column and its subsequent deposition on the seafloor is the primary source controlling the temporal variability of sulfate reduction, whereas the Mn oxides that were enriched in the basin are responsible for the spatial variability of the SRR in the UB. Carbon oxidation in the UB accounted for approximately 30% of primary production and approximately 60% of the export flux, indicating that the continental slope and rise of the UB is a region of rapid organic carbon turnover and nutrient regeneration. Despite over a century of research, reconstructions of the western margin of the last British-Irish Ice Sheet remain controversial. This is mainly because the ice sheet extended offshore onto the continental shelf and therefore significant portions of the glacial record are below present sea level. The availability of high resolution multibeam swath bathymetric and geophysical sub-bottom data for over ~30,000 km2 of the northwest Irish continental margin (between 55°40′ and 54°18′ N, and 7°50′ and 11°4′ W) has made it possible to map glacial features on the continental shelf and glacially-related features on the continental slope and rise. The resulting map, presented here at a scale of 1:260,000, shows that the major glacial features consist of subglacial bedforms and nested arcuate moraines of different orientations across the width of the shelf. Distal to these moraines, the outermost shelf and upper slope are crossed by subparallel and cross-cutting furrows created by iceberg scouring and meltwater discharge at the ice margin. A well-developed system of gullies and canyons and frequent escarpments incise the continental slope. Several large depositional lobes, likely related to the delivery of vast amount of sediment at the ice margin are found in inter-canyon areas and at the base of the slope. Collectively these data show an extensive ice sheet margin across the entire shelf and sedimentation on the continental margin was greatly affected by the presence of the ice margin at the shelf edge. In the framework of the Vector National Italian Project (VulCost line), aimed to study the role of the morphology and the geology of the Ionian Calabrian margin in the coastline evolution, an oceanographic cruise was planned to collect geophysical data along two canyon systems: Caulonia and Marina di Gioiosa. The survey explored the continental shelf and slope from a depth of 15 m to more than 1150 m, using Multibeam Echosounder to investigate the seafloor topography. This work provides an outline of the erosive feature of the slope, shaped mostly by seasonal river input and by the connection to the structural and geological characteristics of the margin, made interesting by a narrow shelf and steep slope and influenced by a recent Quaternary tectonic, cause of the crustal regional seismicity. The collected data allowed us to perform a first characterisation of the geo-morphological peculiarities of the study area, constituting the base for the evaluation of the coastal zone evolution. The continental shelf and slope in the northern South China Sea is well known for its prospect of oil/gas/gas-hydrate resources. To study microbial communities and their roles in carbon cycling, a 4.9-m sediment core was collected from the Qiongdongnan Basin on the continental slope of the South China Sea during our cruise HY4-2005-5 in 2005. Geochemical, mineralogical, and molecular phylogenetic analyses were carried out. Sulfate concentration in pore water decreased with depth. Abundant authigenic carbonates and pyrite were observed in the sediments. The bacterial community was dominated by aerobic and facultative organisms. Bacterial clone sequences belonged to the Gamma-, Alpha-, Deltaproteobacteria and Firmicutes group, and they were related to Fe(III) and/or Mn(IV) reducers, sulfate reducers, aromatic hydrocarbon degraders, thiosulfate/sulfite oxidizers, and denitrifiers. Archaeal clone sequences exhibited greater overall diversity than the bacterial clones with most sequences related to Deep-Sea Archaeal Group (DSAG), Miscellaneous Crenarchaeotic Group (MCG), and Uncultured Euryarchaeotic Clusters (UECs). Archaeal sequences related to Methanosarcinales, South African Gold Mine Euryarchaeotic Group (SAGMEG), Marine Benthic Group-D (MBG-D) were also present. At the Portuguese continental slope, rabbitfish, Chimaera monstrosa , is distributed at depths greater than 200 m. The feeding strategy of this species was investigated based on the analysis of digestive tract contents from specimens captured during a bottom trawl survey held along the southern continental slope of Portugal. The diet of rabbitfish is high in diversity and with differences in composition according to predator size groups. Specimens smaller than 22 cm (pre-supracaudal fin length), which occurred in a restricted area, mainly fed on amphipods, while those with lengths between 22 and 46 cm fed on amphipods and decapods. Larger individuals (>46 cm) had a narrow diet spectrum, consuming mainly decapods. Conditioned by predator size group, significant differences in diet were observed between geographical areas and depths. This suggests that despite some degree of prey specialization according to predator size, this deep-water species is able to change its diet in accordance with the food-restricted environment that characterizes its habitat. The Murray canyons are a group of deeply incised submarine canyons on a steep 400&ThickSpace;km section of the continental slope off Kangaroo Island, South Australia. Some of the canyons are amongst the largest on Earth. The canyons, some 80&ThickSpace;km long, descend from the shelf edge to the abyssal plain 5200&ThickSpace;m deep. Sprigg Canyon, the deepest and one of the largest, has walls 2&ThickSpace;km high. The thalwegs of the larger canyons are concave in profile, steepest on the upper continental slope (15 – 30°), with about 4° gradient on the mid slope, then level out on the lower slope to merge with the 1° continental rise. Between canyons, the continental slope is slightly convex to linear with a gradient of about 5 – 6°. Canyon walls commonly slope at 15 – 22°. The passive continental margin narrows to 65&ThickSpace;km at the Murray canyons and links the Bight and Otway Basins. West-northwest-trending Jurassic – Cretaceous rift structures control the irregular shape of the central canyons. At the western end, large box canyons, 1&ThickSpace;km deep, are incised into thick sediments of the Ceduna Sub-basin. Formed by headscarp erosion, some of these canyons have coalesced by canyon capture. The upper parts of most canyons are cut into Cretaceous sediments and in some places are floored by basement rocks. Large deep-water holes, spaced about 5&ThickSpace;km apart and up to several hundred metres deep, along the outlet channels of the larger and steeper canyons were probably gouged by turbidity currents resulting from major slope failures at the shelf edge, but may be sites of fluid discharges. Quaternary turbidites were deposited on the abyssal plain more than 100&ThickSpace;km from the foot of slope. Canyon downcutting has been episodic since the latest Cretaceous, with peak activity since the Oligocene due to strong glacioeustatic fluctuations and cycles. Canyon development occurred during lowstands and early in transgressions when sediment input at the shelf edge was usually highest. The timing of canyon development is linked to major unconformities in adjacent basins, with downcutting events recorded or inferred during the Early Paleocene, Middle Eocene, Early Oligocene, Oligocene/Miocene transition ( ca 24 Ma), Middle Miocene ( ca 14 Ma) and latest Miocene – Pleistocene. The early phases involved siliciclastic sediments only, while post-Early Eocene canyon cutting was dominated by biogenic carbonates generated on the shelf and upper continental slope. The development of the oostegites was studied in the females of Tmetonyx similis (Crustacea, Amphipoda) during the period of sexual maturation. The process is complex and involves a series of variably long sequences. These sequences may constitute a means of adjusting the animals' sexual maturation to environmental conditions in order to increase their reproductive efficiency. The age and lifespan given by most authors working on amphipod species have probably been underestimated and should be regarded as minimum data. A desertification monitoring system is developed that uses four indicators derived using continental-scale remotely sensed data: vegetation cover, rain use efficiency (RUE), surface run-off and soil erosion. These indicators were calculated on a dekadal time step for 1996. Vegetation cover was estimated using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The estimation of RUE also employed NDVI and, in addition, rainfall derived from Meteosat cold cloud duration data. Surface run-off was modelled using the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) model parametrized using the rainfall estimates, vegetation cover, land cover, and digital soil maps. Soil erosion, one of the most indicative parameters of the desertification process, was estimated using a model parametrized by overland flow, vegetation cover, the digital soil maps and a digital elevation model (DEM). The four indicators were then combined to highlight the areas with the greatest degradation susceptibility. The system has potential for near-real time monitoring and application of the methodology to the remote sensing data archives would allow both spatial and temporal trends in degradation to be determined. Little is known about the distribution and species composition of cetaceans in the Gulf of Taranto, central Mediterranean Sea. Available information is limited to stranding reports and to scant preliminary observations at sea. Cetacean sightings were recorded between April 2007 and October 2009 during 23 daily boat surveys, totalling 1728 km of navigation. Three cetacean species were encountered: striped dolphins (n = 41), Risso's dolphins (n = 5) and fin whales (n = 3). An additional sighting of a sperm whale group is reported. Encounter rates of striped dolphins were the highest, suggesting a regular occurrence in the study area. Risso's dolphins seemed to be predictably present in continental slope waters off the coast of Basilicata. Fin whales and striped dolphins, normally inhabiting deep pelagic waters offshore, were found in continental slope waters relatively close to the coast, possibly due to the particular bathymetry of the Gulf of Taranto and to oceanographic conditions that enhance local productivity. High human impact and worsening environmental conditions in the northern Gulf of Taranto raise concerns over the future of cetaceans living in these waters.
