The purpose of the current article is to define critical appraisal, identify its benefits, discuss conceptual issues influencing the adequacy of a critical appraisal, and detail procedures to help reviewers undertake critical appraisals. A critical appraisal involves a careful and systematic assessment of a study's trustworthiness or methodological rigour, and contributes to assessing how confident people can be in the findings of a set of studies. To help reviewers include high quality critical appraisals in their articles, they can consider differences between quality and bias, the value of total quality scores, the advantages and disadvantages of standardized checklists, the relevance of the experimental hierarchy of evidence, the differences between critical appraisal tools and reporting standards, and the challenges involved in appraising qualitative research. The steps involved in a sound critical appraisal include: (a) identifying the study type(s) of the individual paper(s), (b) identifying appropriate criteria and checklist(s), (c) selecting an appropriate set of criteria and checklist, (d) performing the appraisal, and (e) summarizing and using the results. Although these steps apply to critical appraisals of both quantitative and qualitative research, they require reviewers to make and defend a number of decisions resulting from the subjective features involved in assessing research. Evidence suggests that much of the digital technology available and provided to older adults to enable self-management of long-term conditions is under-utilised. This research focuses on three conditions prevalent amongst older adults: diabetes, dementia and chronic kidney disease and explores the individual enablers and barriers to the use of digital self-management technology. The paper reports findings from a series of three systematic reviews of qualitative research (qualitative evidence syntheses). These reviews informed the design of a Delphi study. The first round of the Delphi involving 15 expert interviews is reported. The findings highlight common themes across the three conditions: how technology is used; barriers to use; assessing individual needs when selecting technology; support requirements; multi-functional self-management technologies; trust, privacy and data sharing; achieving accessible and aspirational design. Some emerging recommendations have been suggested to guide the design, and provision of technology to older adults. These will extended and refined through subsequent rounds of the Delphi method. In an effort to improve teamwork and collaborative care at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), the Midwest Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research Center (MIPERC) collaborated on the implementation of an interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) program that included placement of multidisciplinary student teams. The MIPERC IPCP program supported staff, preceptor and student teams through interprofessional education and structured interprofessional activities for students, including daily huddles, interprofessional student team visits, and nurse triage phone calls. Results from the project's first year were previously reported (Nagelkerk et al., 2017b). Ongoing effects of IPCP on staff morale, IPE knowledge and practice efficiency were measured. Study tools included demographic forms, pre/post module knowledge tests, focus groups and program evaluations. The mean number of clinic patient visits per hour per medical provider was calculated to evaluate practice efficiency. Students (n = 26) and staff (n = 30) demonstrated improvement (p ≤.05) in knowledge test scores for Patient Safety, Team Dynamics and Tips for Behavioral Changes. Providers increased the number of patients seen per hour. Program evaluations and focus group data from providers, staff, and students indicated IPCP programs can be sustainable with ongoing intentional team care strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2014, the Midwest Interprofessional Practice, Education and Research Center partnered with a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) to implement an interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) education program to improve the health of adult patients with diabetes and to improve practice efficiency. This partnership included integrating an interprofessional team of students with the practice team. Twenty-five students and 20 staff engaged in the IPCP program, which included completion of educational modules on IPCP and implementation of daily huddles, focus patient visits, phone calls, team-based case presentations, medication reconciliation, and student-led group diabetes education classes. This study used a sequential mixed methods design. Tools used for collecting data from staff and students included demographic forms, the Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale (IEPS), the Entry-level Interprofessional Questionnaire, the Collaborative Practice Assessment Tool, and pre/post module knowledge tests completed at baseline and at one-year post implementation. Patient clinical indicators included HgbA1c, glucose, lipid panel laboratory assessments, body mass index, blood pressure, and documentation of annual dental, foot, and eye examinations. Practice efficiency was measured by the average number of patients seen per provider per hour. Both students and staff showed significant knowledge gains in IPCP on Team Dynamics and Tips for Behavioural Changes knowledge tests (p < .05). Patients who had an HgbA1c of ≥ 7% significantly decreased their HgbA1c (p < .05) and glucose (p < .01). However, BMI and annual dental and eye examinations did not improve. Providers demonstrated an increase in the number of patients seen per hour. This IPCP intervention showed improvement in practice efficiencies and select patient outcomes in a family practice clinic. Entering its second decade, evidence based library and information practice (EBLIP), the now-preferred term for evidence based librarianship, can count some notable successes. In particular, the initiation and growth of an international open access journal, the ongoing development of an International Conference series, and a proliferation of articles on the stages of the evidence based process attest to its ongoing progress. Of particular note is the increasing engagement within the academic library community now manifest in a variety of case studies. Reviewing the most recent five years of EBLIP development, since a landmark review that chronicled the first five years, the author draws on his close association with the EBLIP movement to assess the progress made. The wider backdrop of evidence based practice has contributed a wider recognition of the types of evidence that support evidence based decision-making. Much technical progress has been made in identification and retrieval of the evidence and its subsequent quality assessment. A significant number of studies document implementation in a local context. Notwithstanding such progress, however, the distance to be travelled is still significant. Challenges remaining within an academic library context include the perennials of lack of time, shortage of skills and the need for a supportive culture and infrastructure. Nevertheless recent developments open up the prospect of drawing on the emerging evidence based practice toolkit to target such problems with tailored and appropriate responses. Electronic information services have the potential to address longstanding barriers in connection with access, especially in a 24/7 clinical environment. This places a premium on appropriate evaluation that must be credible and address wider issues in connection with the collections, services, usability, and the community. The last of these issues has not received sufficient attention. After briefly considering approaches to outcomes measurement, the author reviews three significant approaches to e-Quality: the e-SQ, LibQUAL+, and Multi-attribute stated-preference techniques. Moving to issues around the "community of practice," the author argues that an evaluation framework that takes such a perspective into account will lead to more sympathetic evaluations as well as broadening our understanding and expectations of models of electronic information service delivery. Librarianship has had a long preoccupation with the research-practice gap. Practitioner-led research is criticised for its lack of rigour, academic research for its lack of relevance. Evidence based practice is a pragmatic approach to bridging this gap. This review starts by charting the development of evidence based practice from its origins in medicine through healthcare to other disciplines. It then examines the context for the development of evidence based librarianship, focusing on examples from the wider library literature and on the health information literature from 2002 onwards. The review examines each stage of the evidence based practice process, examining the legacy from the wider paradigm as it specifically relates to information practice. Tools and methods developed within evidence based information practice are briefly summarised. The review concludes by outlining the challenges that remain if evidence based information practice is to be adopted within the profession at large. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author employs his vantage point as a contributor to Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) and Evidence-based Librarianship (EBL) in the United Kingdom to anticipate obstacles to be overcome by the emerging EBL paradigm. After reviewing and synthesizing three proto-definitions of EBL, he discusses issues around the potential domains to be populated by research findings. He then briefly considers the contribution that critical appraisal skills can make to an evidence-based profession. In concluding that “evidence-based librarianship” is a selflimiting “label,” he encourages health information professionals instead to promote the contribution of librarianship to evidence-based practice, a role for which they are uniquely qualified. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether an interprofessional virtual patient educational activity improved interprofessional competencies in pharmacy, physician assistant, and physical therapy graduate students. Seventy-two fifth semester pharmacy (n = 33), fourth semester physician assistant (n = 27) and fourth semester physical therapy (n = 12) graduate students participated in the study. Participants were stratified by discipline and randomized into control (n = 38) and experimental groups (n = 34). At baseline and at study completion, all participants completed an original, investigator-developed survey that measured improvement in selected Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) competencies and the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS). The experimental group had statistically significantly greater odds of improving on a variety of IPEC competencies and RIPLS items. The use of a single, interprofessional educational activity resulted in having a greater awareness of other professions' scopes of practice, what other professions have to offer a given patient and how different professions can collaborate in patient care. The purpose of this retrospective qualitative case report is to describe how a case-based, virtual patient interprofessional education (IPE) simulation activity was utilized to achieve physician assistant (PA), physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) student IPE learning outcomes. Following completion of a virtual patient case, 30 PA, 46 PT and 24 OT students were required to develop a comprehensive, written treatment plan and respond to reflective questions. A qualitative analysis of the submitted written assignment was used to determine whether IPE learning objectives were met. Student responses revealed three themes that supported the learning objectives of the IPE experience: benefits of collaborative care, role clarification and relevance of the IPE experience for future practice. A case-based, IPE simulation activity for physician assistant and rehabilitation students using a computerized virtual patient software program effectively facilitated achievement of the IPE learning objectives, including development of greater student awareness of other professions and ways in which collaborative patient care can be provided.
