Anemia is more prevalent in low- and middle-income countries including India. Anemia in pregnancy is associated with increased risk of maternal health problems and adverse birth outcomes. This study estimates the prevalence and associated risk factors of anemia among pregnant women in India. This cross-sectional study is based on secondary data from the India National Family Health Survey-V (NFHS-5) conducted during 2019–2021. We extracted data of 27,317 currently pregnant women to estimate the prevalence and contributory factors associated with anemia using descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis. The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in India was 52.2%. Anemia was higher among adolescent women (61.5%), those with no education (59.2%), those belonging to poorest wealth index (61.9%), scheduled tribes (59.3%), and those from the eastern region of India (62.1%). Further, it was more prevalent among women with a habit of smoking, tobacco, or alcohol (63.0%), and women with shorter birth intervals (59.7%). Among Indian states, anemia prevalence was higher in the state of Bihar (63.1%) and the union territory of Ladakh (71.4%). Logistic regression models show that women with no education (aOR = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.27–1.57), belonging to a poorest wealth quintile (aOR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.51–1.90), and those with a habit of smoking, tobacco, or alcohol (aOR = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.18–1.63) were more anemic than their counterparts. Additionally, women with no education showed a four-times higher risk of severe anemia (aOR = 4.79, 95% CI = 2.75–8.36) than their highly educated counterparts. Anemia affects half of all pregnant women in India. Anemia prevalence is higher among adolescents, illiterate, poor, and tribal communities. Social norm-based interventions and strengthening the community health facilitators should be implemented to reduce the high burden of anemia in India. Anemia in pregnancy increases the risk of maternal and new-born health problems that lead to unfavorable pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to find the current proportion and factors influencing anemia among currently pregnant Indian women. This study analyzed the data of 27,317 currently pregnant women reported with hemoglobin levels to find the prevalence and contributing factors of anemia. The study revealed that about 52.2% of pregnant women suffer from anemia inclusive of 1.4% with severe anemia. The anemia proportion was higher in women living in the eastern region of India, the poorest households, teenage pregnant women, and women with no formal education. Severity was higher in women belonging to the poorest households, tribal groups, and those with a habit of smoking, tobacco, or alcohol. Further, women with no formal education were four-times more likely to have a risk of severe anemia during their pregnancy. Maternal anemia hampers the growth and development of the newborns. Thereby, anemia adds a huge burden to the nation's economy and health system. High rates of anemia among pregnant women could be a probable factor linked to the higher rate of maternal and child health illness and death in the eastern region, poorest strata, and other vulnerable populations in India. In order to improve maternal health, strengthening male participation in family planning is an important public health initiative. This study aimed to assess factors associated with participation of men in postpartum care at Kiswa Health Centre III, Nakawa division, Kampala. An analytical cross-sectional study design involving collection of quantitative data was used. Systematic random sampling was used to select study participants. Data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires. Data entry and cleaning was performed using EpiData version 12 and analysed using Stata version 14. 80.0% of respondents participated in postpartum family planning. Approval of family planning use, knowledge on family planning and information source were significantly associated with male involvement in postpartum family planning. Respondents who approved family planning use at home were 15.5 times more likely to get involved in family planning services as compared to those who didn't approve family planning. Conclusively, there was a generally high level of male involvement in postpartum family planning in comparison with the national levels. Approval of family planning at home increased the likelihood of men's participation in family planning. What is already known on this subject? In many South Asian contexts, specific dates are auspicious and inauspicious for health-related behaviours and outcomes. This study analysed the effect of lunar date-related auspicious beliefs in Nepal on childbirths and neonatal health outcomes. Using the daily birth records from a tertiary maternity hospital, we empirically examined whether births occurred disproportionally around full moon days. We found an average of 10.7 extra births on and before full moon days, with an average of 7.5 extra Caesarean deliveries on full moon days. We demonstrated that births occurring on or before the full moon day have poor neonatal health outcomes. However, a subsample analysis suggested better health outcomes for low-risk mothers and worse health outcomes for high-risk mothers. These findings suggest that low-risk mothers may move their deliveries to auspicious dates with fewer complications than high-risk mothers. Studies show that body mass index during early adulthood ('early BMI') predicts the transition to first birth, but early childbearers tend to be omitted from such studies. This sample selection distorts the prevalence of childlessness, and particularly the racial/ethnic heterogeneity therein, because first birth timing differs by race/ethnicity. We imputed pre-parenthood early BMI for a larger sample, including early childbearers, for the same United States NLSY79 data used in a previous study and simulated differences in the probability of childlessness at age 40+ using posterior distributions based on the Bayesian framework. Obesity was consistently associated with higher childlessness across racial/ethnic groups in both sexes, but only among obese women were first births delayed until after early adulthood. The overall lower childlessness among the underweight women appeared largely driven by Black women. Our findings on the intersectionality of race/ethnicity and sex in the BMI–childlessness pathways encourage research on the underlying mechanisms and on more recent cohorts across different societies. The route from family planning intentions to practices is not linear, it is contingent on different social factors including the preferences of individuals and couples, their gendered positions and bargaining power, the wider political, economic and social context, and also physical and bodily circumstances. We used qualitative data collected in rural Burundi between 2013 and 2016 to explore how these diverse factors influence reproductive navigation in a context framed by uncertainty and changing social norms. We describe representations of bodily (pre)dispositions for fertility and reproduction, such as the 'natural' capacity for birth spacing or the bodily capacity to use 'natural' (having a regular cycle) and 'modern' methods (not having negative side effects) that contribute collectively to an understanding of 'the body is difficult'. We found that despite these bodily constraints, women enact embodied agency to ensure livelihoods and social status, thus framing their reproductive intentions and practices. In the context of Burundi where corporeality is key to gendered social belonging, family planning programmes fail to respond to the needs and concerns of women and their embodied reproductive experiences. Iron-deficiency anemia is defined as anemia, a condition in which there less than the normal hemoglobin (Hb) accompanied by an indication of iron deficiency. Nearly half of all pregnant women worldwide suffer from anemia, and iron deficiency accounts for about half the world's anemia burden. Most of the studies conducted on iron-deficiency anemia during pregnancy were conducted at the institution level and associated factors are not well studied and documented. Hence, the aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia and associated factors among pregnant women in Bolosso Bomibe District, Southern Ethiopia, 2019. Community-based cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted from April to June 2019. Multistage sampling was used to include 270 study participants in 6 kebeles. The structured and pretested questionnaire, middle upper arm circumference (MUAC), Hb, serum ferritin, and C-reactive protein were used as a tool to collect data. The data was compiled and entered to EpiData version 3.1 and exported to Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.00 packages for analysis. Univariate, bivariate, and multivariable logistic regression with odds ratio along with the 95% confidence intervals (CI) was computed and interpreted. p value < 0.05 was declared as statistically significant. The prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia was 11.3% (95% CI: 8.9-15.7). Factors associated with iron-deficiency anemia were ANC follow-up for the recent pregnancy (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 3, 95% CI: 1.15-8.9, and years b/n successive pregnancy (AOR = 4,95% CI: 1.2-12.4). Prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia was low, which is a mild public health concern among pregnant women in Bolosso Bombe District. The factors associated with iron-deficiency anemia in this study population were MUAC, ANC follow-up, birth spacing among successive pregnancy, and duration of menstrual bleeding. Background: The possible impact of interpregnancy interval (IPI) on perinatal outcomes has long been studied, however, a definition of the optimal interval is still not clear. Both short and long IPIs have been associated with obstetrical syndromes and short and long-term complications. In this study, we sought to explore the impact of IPI on the hazard for neoplasm of the offspring, thus contribute to the present literature in determining the preferred birth spacing. Objective: We aim to investigate the association between short and long IPIs and the hazard for childhood neoplasm of the offspring. Methods: A population-based retrospective cohort analysis comparing offspring neoplasm hazard following three different IPIs. Exposure was defined as short (<6 months), or long (>60 months) IPIs, whereas intermediate IPI (6 months = 60 months) served as the comparison group. The study included singleton live births in a tertiary regional hospital between 1991 and 2014. Offspring were followed for 18 years, and all hospitalization records for neoplasm diagnoses were collected. Kaplan–Meier survival curves were used for the cumulative incidence of neoplasm morbidity, and Cox proportional hazards models were used to control for confounders. Results: During the study period, 144,397 deliveries met the inclusion criteria. Of those, 18,947 (13.1%) occurred in women with short IPI, 114,012 (79%) in women with intermediate IPI, and 11,438 (7.9%) in women with long IPI. 61 benign neoplasms and 80 malignant neoplasms were registered in offspring born after long IPI. The total percentage of neoplasm were the highest in the long IPI group versus the intermediate and short IPI groups (malignant = 0.7%, 0.6%, 0.5% respectively, benign = 0.5%, 0.4%, 0.3% respectively). Controlling for maternal age, diabetes mellitus, preterm delivery, birth weight, smoking, cesarean section, and fertility treatments, long IPI was found to be independently associated with high hazard for long-term pediatric neoplasm related hospitalizations (adjusted HR 1.39, 95% CI 1.09, 1.77). Short IPI may be associated to decreased hazard for childhood neoplasms (adjusted HR 0.74, 95% Cl 0.59, 0.92). Conclusions: Long IPI is associated with a high hazard for childhood neoplasms, compared with intermediate and short IPIs. Short IPI may be associated with decreased hazard for childhood neoplasms. Sierra Leone launched the Free Health Care Initiative, which abolished health user fees for pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under five years of age, in 2010. Combining data from the Demographic and Health Survey and a geocoded dataset for the distribution of public health facilities, I design a difference-in-differences study involving birth timing and transportation cost to investigate its impact on infant mortality and desired fertility. I find that the program does not achieve its goal of reducing infant mortality, with the lack of vaccination being a major problem. Notwithstanding the lack of reduction in infant mortality, the program leads to a significant decline in desired fertility, implying that parents may overestimate the program's benefits and change their expectations of infant mortality accordingly. Postponement of first births is a key cause of declining fertility rates, especially in East Asia where recovery from delayed childbearing has been weak. This paper investigates achievement of ideal ages at marriage and first birth in Singapore using survey data on 657 married women aged 25–34. Almost 50 per cent marry within one year of their ideal age, but less than 30 per cent have their first child within six months of their ideal interval to first birth, with around 50 per cent waiting longer than ideal. The high proportion of women experiencing a longer-than-ideal first birth interval was observed across all age and educational groups. Regression results show that co-residence with a foreign domestic worker and paid leave entitlements are associated with higher probability of achieving their ideal first birth interval, whereas availability of parents/in-laws, husband's help and unpaid leave do not reduce time to childbearing. The time interval between one pregnancy and the next is a modifiable risk factor, and has an effect on pregnancy outcomes. This study compared the effects of short interpregnancy interval (IPI) on fetal birthweight and selected pregnancy outcomes amongst parturients in Enugu, Nigeria. Group A (Subjects) consisted of parturients with short IPI (IPI < 18 months), while group B (Controls) consisted of parturients with normal IPI (IPI ≥ 18 months). Relevant obstetric data were collected at delivery. Mean birthweight was 2664.13 ± 339.25g vs 3670.63 ± 452.69g in women with short IPI and normal IPI respectively (p <.0001). Women with short IPI were more likely to have low birthweight babies compared to those with normal IPI (OR = 7.331, p <.001). Maternal anaemia, preeclampsia and caesarean delivery were significantly more associated with short IPI. Women with short IPI are at greater risk of delivering newborn babies with significantly lower mean birthweight and other associated pregnancy complications than women with normal IPI. What is already known on this subject? Short interpregnancy interval has an adverse effect on pregnancy outcomes as shown in studies from Europe and the Americas. Malnutrition among children remains a challenge to public health in Africa, and it is responsible for the increased infant mortality rate in Ethiopia. This study aims to identify the joint determinant factors of malnutrition among under-age five children in Ethiopia and quantify the regional prevalence across the country. A Bayesian hierarchical linear mixed model, with a bivariate conditional autoregressive model, was adopted to account for the joint spatial prevalence pattern of malnutrition among under-age five children in Ethiopia. The data were provided by the Demography and Health Surveys program. The study revealed that gender, wealth index, mothers' education, toilet system, fever, birth order, birth interval, contraceptive use, and diarrhea, are significant risk factors of child malnutrition. The three malnutrition indicators are most prevalent in the Afar region, while stunting and underweight are most prevalent in Amhara, Beneshangul Gumuz, and Tigray, and the wasting and underweight are most prevalent in the Gambela and Somali. Findings revealed that a stunted child is more likely to be underweight than being wasted, and a wasted child is more likely to be underweight than being stunted. The findings also revealed significant changes in the prevalence of malnutrition for different mothers and children age groups. For cost-effective malnutrition intervention, programs for parents, such as awareness creation about the modern types of contraceptives, appropriate birth spacing, the benefits of antenatal and postnatal care, for example, are a propitious method to mitigate malnutrition in high prevalent regions than direct intervention to the children. Previous research assessing consequences of interpregnancy intervals (IPIs) on child development is mixed. Utilizing a population-based US sample (n = 5339), we first estimate the associations between background characteristics (e.g. sociodemographic and maternal characteristics) and short (≤1 year) and long (>3 years) IPI. Then, we estimate associations between IPI and birth outcomes, infant temperament, cognitive ability, and externalizing symptoms. Several background characteristics, such as maternal age at childbearing and previous pregnancy loss, were associated with IPI, indicating research on the putative effects of IPI must account for background characteristics. After covariate adjustment, short IPI was associated with poorer foetal growth and long IPI was associated with lower infant activity level; however, associations between short and long IPI and the other outcomes were neither large nor statistically significant. Childhood stunting is a serious public health concern in Bangladesh. Earlier research used conventional statistical methods to identify the risk factors of stunting, and very little is known about the applications and usefulness of machine learning (ML) methods that can identify the risk factors of various health conditions based on complex data. This research evaluates the performance of ML methods in predicting stunting among under-5 aged children using 2014 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey data. Besides, this paper identifies variables which are important to predict stunting in Bangladesh. Among the selected ML methods, gradient boosting provides the smallest misclassification error in predicting stunting, followed by random forests, support vector machines, classification tree and logistic regression with forward-stepwise selection. The top 10 important variables (in order of importance) that better predict childhood stunting in Bangladesh are child age, wealth index, maternal education, preceding birth interval, paternal education, division, household size, maternal age at first birth, maternal nutritional status, and parental age. Our study shows that ML can support the building of prediction models and emphasizes on the demographic, socioeconomic, nutritional and environmental factors to understand stunting in Bangladesh. This study aims to assess the independent influence of interpregnancy interval (IPI) on uterine rupture using a population-based cohort of all Ohio births, regardless of prior cesarean (PCS) or trial of labor (TOL) status. Population-based retrospective cohort study of all live births in Ohio (2006–2012). Frequency of uterine rupture was quantified and stratified by number of prior cesarean deliveries and IPI. The relative and adjusted risk of IPI on uterine rupture was calculated using multivariate logistic regression. Of 1,034,522 live births recorded during the 7-year study period, 249 cases of uterine rupture were identified for analysis. Two-thirds of uterine rupture cases (n = 158) occurred in women with one or more PCS and one-third (n = 91) had no prior cesarean. IPI 24–59 months had the lowest frequency of uterine rupture and was used as the referent group. IPI 12–23 and IPI ≥ 60 months were not significantly associated with risk of uterine rupture, p =.847,.540 respectively. In women with PCS, IPI < 12 months was associated with greater than two-fold increased risk of uterine rupture (aRR 2.4, CI 1.5–3.8). No association between IPI < 12 months and uterine rupture was observed in women with no PCS, p =.696. In this work, using spontaneous expression of white skin color preference by Black Brazilian children as stimulus, we seek to examine the construction and performance of racial subjectivity in Black children. Drawing on a range of psychoanalytic theories, we strive to develop a psychoanalytic understanding of racial formation that is complex and non-essentializing. The paper concludes with an examination of the possibilities of pedagogical interventions that might provide space for Black children to occupy and perform more expansive racial identities, assisted by teachers who embody receptivity, a capacity for positive mirroring, and an ability to practice mentalizing pedagogies. This paper examines the long-term effects of birth cohort size on life outcomes. Using administrative data from Singapore, we study the outcomes of large birth cohorts created by the Chinese superstitious practice of zodiac birth timing, where parents prefer to give birth in the year of the Dragon. This practice is followed exclusively by the Chinese majority, with no similar patterns detected among non-Chinese minorities, allowing us to differentiate cohort size effects from confounding year-of-birth effects. Despite government efforts to increase public educational resources for these cohorts, Chinese Dragons earn lower incomes and are less likely to gain admission to national universities. There is also evidence of negative externalities on non-practising populations who happen to enter the labour market at the same time as Chinese Dragons. Our analysis suggests that the adverse life outcomes are not due to selection, but rather reflect the aggregate resource implications of birth cohort size. A wealth of demographic research has explored the determinants of sex ratios at birth, but few studies have considered the role of foetal loss (spontaneous abortion), in producing feminine sex ratios. One challenge is measuring the occurrence of foetal loss, which is difficult to recognize and report in survey research. This study uses the length of the birth interval as a proxy for foetal loss; foetal loss restarts the clock on time to conception and lengthens the birth interval. We use Demographic and Health Survey data on second births to women in 17 sub-Saharan African countries. Results show that longer second birth intervals are significantly related to lower odds of a male second birth and to feminine sex ratios at birth. These findings suggest that high levels of foetal loss, which could signal underlying poor maternal health in a population, have dramatic effects on the sex ratio at birth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aims of the study were to explore the contraceptive practices of married adolescent girls in rural Upper Egypt and identify the determinants of their ever use of modern contraception. The study was a household survey of 729 married adolescent girls in 23 villages of two governorates in Upper Egypt. Listing and enumeration of all households in the selected villages were performed prior to data collection, to recruit married adolescent girls below 20 years of age. The girls were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Only 6% of married adolescent girls were using a modern contraceptive method; 10.6% had ever used a modern contraceptive method, mostly a short-acting method. Considerable proportions of participants believed that using contraception would reduce a woman's fertility and that women should not delay their first pregnancy (34% and 54.3%, respectively); only 50.2% believed that contraception could be used for birth spacing. Predictors of the ever use of a modern method of contraception among married adolescent girls were: accepting that contraception could be used for birth spacing (B = 1.82, p <.001), older age (B = 0.42, p <.01), better reproductive health knowledge (B = 0.23, p <.05) and sharing in contraceptive decision making (B = 0.55, p <.05). Married adolescent girls' current use and ever use of modern contraception were very low in rural Upper Egypt. Changing the social norms to create the desire to delay first childbirth, improving adolescent girls' reproductive health knowledge, correcting myths about contraception and building girls' agency to use contraception may increase their contraceptive use. Translanguaging has become a popular concept in educational contexts. However, it has not been discussed much in the kindergarten context of Norway. Many studies on translanguaging have been carried out in specific bilingual classrooms. In kindergartens in Norway, Norwegian is usually the common and majority language whilst a growing number of children attending kindergarten are multilingual with diverse linguistic background, and kindergarten teachers often have limited knowledge in the children's languages. The article elaborates on the concept of translanguaging from an educational and linguistic perspective. The concept of translanguaging is used as a theoretical lens to discuss kindergarten teachers' pedagogical practice with multilingual children and parents, as well as discourses in the kindergarten curriculum. We use a mixed time model to study the dynamics of a system consisting of two consumers that reproduce only in annual birth pulses, possibly at different times, with interaction limited to competition for a resource that reproduces continuously. Ecological theory predicts competitive exclusion; this expectation is met under most circumstances, the winner being the species with the greater 'power', defined as the time average consumer level at the fixed point. Instability of that fixed point for the stronger competitor slightly weakens its domination, so that a resident species with an unstable fixed point can sometimes be invaded by a slightly weaker species, leading ultimately to coexistence. Differences in birth pulse times can lead to qualitatively different long-term coexistence behaviour, including cycles of different lengths or chaos. A majority of the existing narratives on studying civil society in India are flooded with empirical findings, without much emphasis on theoretical understanding of the subject. Thus, the article tries to provide a historical overview of the development of notion of civil society and its research in "uncivil" Indian tradition from different dominant theoretical angles in the field. After finding their limitations, the study attempts to provide an alternative understanding of emergence of civil society in colonial India. It also aims to explore, how the lineage of traditional inform civic assocciationalism combined with modern institutionalized associational space gave birth to liberal-minded individuals and the conscious public in colonial India. Using a queer theoretical lens, this conceptual paper explores the complexities of working with queer youth in leisure spaces by using genderplay to explore gender identity. Given the current social and political climate in Canada, researchers in this area face considerable professional road blocks from gatekeepers, despite providing often life-saving access for youth to queer mentors, community, and health resources. This paper, therefore, provides insight into the pervasiveness of the image of the child that informs the anxiety present in current political, social, and cultural discourses about queer children and the danger that image is putting these actual children in by limiting access to the above stated resources. Moreover, we expose how the image of the child is always invested in ideals of middle and upper-class whiteness, able-bodiedness, and imagined straightness from the outset, which further limits access to leisure spaces for queer children who may be otherwise marginalized. This article posits that analyses of (cyber)bullying among digitally connected young people need to explore the interdependences, intersections and cON/FFlation of bullying in ONline and OFFline spaces. It combines digital geographers' works on relationalities between digital and offline spaces with studies on children's and young people's geographies and digitization as well as with interdisciplinary work on cyberbullying and traditional bullying in the school context. Drawing on narratives written by young people in Austria, the article lets participants speak through their own voices. There is an urgent need for disparate research examining either or both traditional and cyberbullying, to take note not only of each of their inimitable spatialities, but also their intersections. The COVID-19 pandemic has spread to more than 200 countries and territories, despite governments' efforts to 'flatten the curve'. The measures to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak have been perceived as retrogressive for children and young people's rights to participation. A common denominator across countries and regions is the reduced spaces for children and young people to influence decision-making processes and policy responses associated with COVID-19. This article critically examines the meanings and implications of children and young people's participation rights in the time of COVID-19. In particular, it explores how lockdowns and other physical distancing measures have a negative impact on social interactions, leaving behind hard-to-reach children and young people and undermining some children and young people's rights to participate on the premise that their protection is more relevant in crisis situations. This article discusses children and young people's perspectives on how their opportunities to be listened to during the pandemic have been restricted. The article considers children and young people's ability to communicate online, considering how those without access to the Internet – practically half the world – are left out, and, in the end, demonstrating that this pandemic is producing and exacerbating existing inequalities. We analysed population data from the 2015–16 National Family Health Survey to disentangle the intricate underlying effects of reproductive behaviours and fertility preferences on child growth. We expected birth interval length to be more strongly associated with stunting than sibsize and these effects to be moderated by whether the child was wanted or unintended (mistimed/unwanted). Regression analyses showed strong and equal effects of short birth interval and sibsize on stunting, when adjusted for potential confounders and unobserved between-mother heterogeneity. There were no statistical associations between stunting and mistiming/unwantedness of index children, suggesting the absence of discrimination against such children. We conclude that while fertility preferences have no effect, reproductive behaviours exert significant influence on child growth. Sibsize has been falling for many years in India but birth interval lengths have remained largely unchanged. Earlier studies to assess the effects of risk factors on child nutritional status in Bangladesh have used conventional regression models that are inadequate to capture a complete scenario of effects. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the heterogeneous effects of factors at different points of conditional height-for-age Z-score (HAZ) distribution accounting for cluster-level variation using linear quantile mixed model (LQMM) and to compare them with a linear mixed model (LMM). In addition, an unconditional quantile model (UQM) was used to measure the effect of factors on the unconditional (marginal) HAZ distribution. A total of 6340 children aged 0–59 months extracted from the 2014 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey. Different factors – maternal characteristics (age, occupation, nutritional status, parity, birth interval), parental education, child age, breastfeeding status, and morbidity had significant heterogeneous effects on HAZ distribution. For example, secondary or higher educated parents had substantial differential impacts on the lower tail and upper tail of the child HAZ distribution, which was masked by LMM estimate. Moreover, significant cluster-level variations found across all quantiles of child HAZ. Background: For women who suffer from abruption in the first pregnancy, the extent to which birth spacing has an impact on maternal and fetal outcomes in a second pregnancy remains unclear.Objectives: To examine the effect of interpregnancy interval (IPI) after a first pregnancy complicated by placental abruption, on adverse maternal and fetal outcomes in a subsequent pregnancy.Study design: This was a population-based retrospective cohort study using maternally-linked Missouri birth registry from 1989 to 2005 (n = 2069). Exposure of interest was IPI and outcomes were placental abruption, preeclampsia, preterm birth, small for gestational age, cesarean delivery, and neonatal plus fetal deaths (neofetal death) in a second pregnancy. Logistic regressions were used to assess the association between IPI and the outcomes.Results: Compared with women with an IPI of 1-2 years, those with short IPI (<1 year) were more likely to experience preterm birth (aOR 3.01, 95% CI 1.71-5.28) and neonatal death (aOR 3.52, 95% CI 1.24-10.02) in their subsequent pregnancy. No significant associations between IPI and recurrent placental abruption or preeclampsia were detected.Conclusions: Women who become pregnant in less than a year's time of an initial placental abruption are at increased risk for preterm birth and neofetal death in a subsequent pregnancy. Objective: To determine if differences exist among nulliparous overweight and obese gravidas undergoing cervical ripening employing three different agents (dinoprostone, misoprostol, or cervical catheter).Methods: A retrospective cohort study of nulliparous overweight and obese women who underwent induction of labor at two south-central Pennsylvania hospitals between January 2014 and December 2017. Nulliparous gravidas, ≥37 weeks' gestational age, with singleton pregnancies in the vertex presentation, were included in the study. We employed the following definitions: (1) overweight: BMI 25.0-29.9 kg/m2; (2) class I obesity: BMI 30.0-34.9 kg/m2; (3) class II obesity: BMI 35.0-39.9 kg/m2; and (4) class III obesity: BMI >40.0 kg/m2. The primary outcome measure was the mean difference in induction-to-birth time. A subanalysis was performed to assess the effect of BMI on the primary outcome. Secondary outcome measures included mode of delivery, induction-to-second-stage-of-labor time, estimated blood loss, neonatal feeding type, neonatal Apgar scores, and neonatal admission to triage or intensive care unit (ICU) after delivery. A priori power calculation estimated that 156 patients would be needed using the medium effective size. Data analysis was performed using ANOVA for continuous variables and chi-square tests for categorical variables.Results: Among 192 nulliparous overweight and obese gravidas, 70 received dinoprostone, 72 were given misoprostol, and 50 had cervical ripening with cervical catheters. There were no significant differences in mean induction to birth times among overweight and obese women when comparing the three cervical ripening agents (dinoprostone 24.5 ± 15.2 versus misoprostol 28.7 ± 12.3 and catheters 25.1 ± 12.9 hours), (p = .145, 95% CI -8.7 to 0.2 and -5.5 to 4.3, respectively). Overweight nulliparous women had shorter mean induction to birth time (22.9 ± 11.4 versus 29.2 ± 15.8 hours) as compared to class II obese women, (p = .037, 95% CI -12.0 to -0.38). When overweight women were compared to class III obese women, shorter mean induction to birth time (22.9 ± 11.4 versus 30.9 ± 13.9 hours) was also found, (p = .005, 95% CI -13.4 to -2.4).Conclusion: Among nulliparous overweight and obese gravidas, neither dinoprostone, misoprostol, or cervical catheter significantly impacted the induction to birth time. There was a longer induction to birth time for class II and class III obese women when compared to overweight women. Background: Interpregnancy intervals (IPI) are independently associated with maternal, perinatal, infant and child outcomes. Birth spacing is a recommended tool to reduce adverse health outcomes especially among children. This study aims to determine the prevalence of adverse child health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries and to examine the association between the length of preceding birth interval child health outcomes.Methods: Secondary data from Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) in 34 SSA countries with 299 065 births was used in this study. The outcome variables were infant mortality, low birth weight, stunting, underweight, wasting, overweight and anemia. Percentage was used in univariate analysis. Cox proportional hazard regression was used to examine association between the adjusted model of preceding birth interval and infant mortality. Multinomial and binary logistic regression models were used to examine the association between under-five children adverse health outcomes and interpregnancy birth interval.Results: Infant mortality was lowest in Gambia (3.4%) and highest in Sierra Leone (9.3%). Comoros (16.8%) accounted for the highest percentage of low birth weight (<2.5 kg). Child stunting was as high as 54.6% in Burundi. IPIs of <24 months, 24-36 months, 37-59 months and ≤60 months accounted for 19.3, 37.8, 29.5 and 13.4% respectively. Median IPI was 34 months. Results from Cox proportional hazard regression showed that children with preceding birth interval <24 months had 57% higher risk of infant mortality, compared to children with IPI of 24-36 months (Hazard ratio (HR) = 1.57; 95%CI: 1.45, 1.69). However, there were 19% and 10% reduction in the risk of infant mortality at IPIs of 37-59 months and ≥60 months, compared to 24-36 months IPI (37-59 months: HR = 0.81; 95%CI: 0.75, 0.87; ≥60 months: HR = 0.90; 95%CI: 0.81, 0.99).Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest the need for urgent intervention to promote the recommended interpregnancy interval of 24-36 months to reduce adverse child health outcomes. These data also bring into limelight the importance of exclusive breastfeeding to enhance proper nutritional approach and to prolong lactational amenorrhea. Drawing from a multiple-case study of professional learning in literacy, this article presents vignettes from a Grade 1 classroom where the professional learning focused on multimodal literacy pedagogies that combined digital and print-based resources to expand children's meaning-making. Linking children's opportunities for expansive literacy options and civic engagement, we focus on a lesson cycle in one teacher's engagement in the learning. We highlight how the teacher's pedagogy of exploration positioned children as capable meaning makers and how the children's innovative literacy practices informed the teachers' understandings of literacy pedagogies. These findings forward grounded examples of classroom spaces for children's meaning-making and civic engagement that are co-produced by multimodal and flexible pedagogies where children act as curricular-informants. This paper illustrates how Community Play Therapy (CPT) can be used to facilitate person-to-person encounters in school avoidant and neurodiverse children. CPT provides a psychologically safe space for children who hesitate to go to school or have difficulties with school life due to neurodevelopmental disorders. CPT includes the children, volunteer assistants, and facilitators. The core conditions of person-centered therapy are used by the facilitators to provide such a space for the children. A case illustration provides an example of how facilitators create a safe space and facilitate the person-to-person encounter using CPT. This paper constitutes an introduction to the special journal issue on the twentieth-century architecture for children regarded as 'citizens of the future' by several distinct ideologies. Four papers from different geographical areas, performed at different times of the twentieth century, comprise the issue and present a rich array of political projects which nonetheless shared the belief in children and childhood as the objects for education, indoctrination, and social transformation. Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of adding mobile phone call reminders to a postpartum family planning service on the initiation of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC).Methods: A randomised, open-label controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03135288) was carried out at a university hospital between July 2017 and March 2019. The study comprised women who delivered a live birth at >28 weeks' gestation and who requested birth spacing for ≥1 year. Eligible women were recruited and randomised to two groups. The study group received contraceptive counselling and two reminders of their first postpartum appointment, one week and again 48 h before the appointment. The control group received contraceptive counselling but no mobile phone reminders of their first postpartum appointment. The primary outcome was the rate of initiation of a LARC method in the first 6 months postpartum.Results: The study comprised 500 participants in each group. The rate of initiation and continuation of a LARC method was significantly higher in the study group compared with the control group (30.2% vs 8.4% and 95.4% vs 83.3%, respectively; p < .001). In the study group, 382 (76.4%) women had started using a contraceptive method during the first 6 months, compared with 218 (43.6%) women in the control group (p < .001).Conclusion: Using mobile phone reminders as part of the postpartum service increases the frequency of women who attends family planning clinics and initiates contraception, including a LARC methods, as well as the proportion who continue LARC use through the first 6 months postpartum. This study focused on the effects of the neighbourhood on the fertility outcomes among marriage immigrant wives in Taiwan. In particular, we investigated the effects of the proportion of marriage immigrants in the neighbourhood and ethnic composition of the neighbours on fertility behaviours of foreign wives. The study further explored whether and to what extent commercialised cross-border marriages moderate the relationships. Micro-data from the 2013 Living Demand of Foreign and Mainland Spouses and administrative data for 21 cities and counties were utilised in this study. We found that immigrant wives in an area with a higher proportion of marriage immigrants were likely to have higher fertility and shorter intervals between births. Immigrant wives who married through a broker were likely to have lower fertility if they were living in a neighbourhood with a higher proportion of marriage immigrants. The therapist's office can often be an intimidating space for children and adolescents, especially those in residential care who have experienced multiple traumas. This environment can block the therapeutic process and hinder a therapeutic alliance from forming between the clinician and the youth. Although unconventional, integrating the method of stealth therapy into the therapeutic work with children and adolescents has shown impressive results in building a stronger therapeutic bond and putting them at ease when discussing difficult topics. Stealth therapy involves the therapist meeting the youth where they are most comfortable and giving the youth space and time to adjust to the therapist's presence. Allowing the youth to have some control over the situation gives them a sense of safety and security that they may not have ever experienced. Once the youth feel safe with the therapist, they are more likely to open up and discuss traumatic events. Therapists in Therapeutic Residential Care (TRC) traditionally felt guilty if they didn't offer weekly formal psychotherapy to the youth with complex trauma that populate contemporary TRC. But the outpatient model of traditional psychotherapy meets the needs of a small portion of the youth in TRC. This paper describes an alternative model emphasizing creativity and flexibility in the therapeutic engagement of youth with complex trauma to more adequately meet their needs. Reducing the mortality of children under-5 (U5) is an essential part of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). Although Bangladesh has made progress in reducing child mortality, there remain inequalities among different sociodemographic groups. Education is one particular key factor with a multidimensional impact on child health and survival. This study assessed the association between parental education and U5 mortality using repeated cross-sectional Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey data. The risk of child death was substantially low among educated parents. Children of secondary or higher educated mother and father were about 30% (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.697, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.596 to 0.815, p<.001) and 26% (HR = 0.738, 95% CI 0.635 to 0.858, p <.001), respectively, less likely to die early. Children from wealthier households and born to mothers with long birth spacings were less likely to face an early death. The study findings emphasize on imparting education to parents as an intervention strategy to continue the reduction of child mortality rate in Bangladesh, which could be a policy direction toward achieving the SDGs. We examine pathways between indicators of fertility tempo/quantum and depressive symptoms among parents aged 55+ with at least two children, using three waves of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Using standard regression approaches and path analysis within the structural equation framework, we also investigate whether fertility trajectories mediated the association between childhood disadvantage and later-life depression. Results provide limited support for direct influences of fertility trajectories on depression, but indicate indirect linkages for both women and men. Associations are mediated by partnership history, social support, wealth, later-life smoking, and functional limitation. Associations between childhood disadvantage and later-life depression are partially mediated by fertility stressors. Results confirm the influence of life course experiences on depression at older ages and demonstrate the interlinked role of family and other life course pathways on later-life well-being. It is claimed by some that the number of births occurring at the time of the full moon is greater than other phases of the lunar cycle; however, many publications fail to substantiate the claim leading to the conclusion it is myth. We tested using a novel approach the null hypotheses: (i) human birth is not lunar cycle-dependent and (ii) the number of births occurring at or around the time of the full moon is not different from the number occurring at the time of the other phases of the lunar cycle. We reviewed the birth records from 1 January 1996 to 16 March 2007 of the obstetric department of our hospital, which was then located in a relatively undeveloped area of Fukutsu city in Fukuoka Prefecture of southern Japan. A total of 1507 births satisfied all inclusion criteria, among others, being full-term and following spontaneously initiated labor. When the birth data were analyzed as done by other investigators, i.e. total number of births per lunar day, lunar phase was not found to be influential. However, more detailed analyses on the subset of babies born specifically during the nighttime hours (N = 362) revealed the number of births varied in relation specifically to the changing amount of moonlight during the nighttime at different stages of the lunar cycle, with highest number of births at or around the time of the full moon. In contrast, analyses on the subset of babies born specifically during the daytime hours (N = 377) revealed the number of births varied in relation specifically to the changing amount moonlight during the daytime at different stages of the lunar cycle, with the highest number of births at or around the time of the new moon. The initiation and culmination of human birth are typically a nocturnal process. The findings of this investigation are consistent with the hypothesis natural nighttime parturition is influenced by lunar phase, particularly the full moon, and, thus, they are consistent with the belief the moon exerts an affect upon the timing of human birth. We speculate the long-hold belief of the association between birth and lunar phase may be based on historical observations that in the absence of artificial light at night nocturnal births occurred in elevated number when the full moon brightly illuminated the nighttime sky. This paper explores the intergenerational media practice pedagogy at work in the Generation Animation project. Using a participatory action research (PAR) methodology this project developed out of a small community in Northern Ireland. In this post-conflict community, the project aimed to make space for children's voices. The project sits in a specific post-conflict context known as 'Shared Education'. In this context, primary school pupils from schools divided along denominational and sectarian geographies come together as a means of learning and understanding the other. When teachers from two such schools approached Ulster University to support them in developing a program of digital animation for their (8–10-year-old) pupils, an intergenerational learning environment was established which included staff from the primary schools, students and staff from the university and the primary school pupils. The PAR approach enabled the facilitation of learning through media practice (animation) as these pupils used the animated screen space to explore the UNICEF Rights of the Child. This paper offers an examination of the complex pedagogical interplay at work between the key participants and offers insights and conclusions on the impact of the PAR on the participants and the wider community. Located in the South West Pacific region, with a population of 7.5 million, Papua New Guinea (PNG) is among a group of Pacific countries with sub-optimal health status. The maternal mortality ratio is 171 per 100,000 live births. Unmet need for contraception and family planning services, although poorly understood in PNG, may be one of the underlying causes of poor maternal health. This study set out to measure the prevalence and trends in unmet need for contraception and the identified socioeconomic factors associated with contraceptive use among women of reproductive age (15–49 years) in PNG. Data available from the Integrated Health and Demographic Surveillance System (IHDSS) were used in this study. A sub-population data set was extracted of 1434 women who gave birth in the preceding two years and resided in four rural surveillance sites: Asaro, Hides, Hiri and Karkar. Analyses of unmet need for contraception were performed with respect to birth spacing and limiting the number of births. Unmet need for contraception was 34% for the previous birth, 37% for the current pregnancy, and 49% for future family planning. The total unmet need for contraception was 35%, of which 49% was for spacing births and 51% for limiting births. Women's age, education and household wealth are the most significant determinants of unmet need for contraception. The high level of unmet need for contraception may contribute to women's poor health status in PNG. The two fertility stalls that occurred in Bangladesh emerged as substantial barriers in controlling its burgeoning vast population. The first stall occurred during 1996–2000 in the mid-transition of fertility, while the second stall occurred during the recent period 2011–2014 in the late transition of fertility. This article explores the role of proximate determinants in those stalls by using the data of Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys. Data have been analyzed using proximate determinants model and a descriptive analysis technique. Findings show that contraceptive use and induced abortion are the main drivers of fertility transition in Bangladesh. Both stalls in Bangladesh are found to be associated with a stall in induced abortion. In addition, declining postpartum infecundability plays a vital role in setting first stall. At the end of this stall, composition of contraceptive use is also found less efficient. While, declining fertility-inhibiting effect of marriage and a marginal increase in contraceptive use are the additional factors that play key roles in setting second stall. The mixture of contraceptive use shows a shift to a more efficient composition in the recent years. Change in the timing of birth does not show any consistent link with any of the fertility stalls. Using the metaphor as a frame, the author explores the role of play therapy and by extension, incorporates parents into the work with the child, to facilitate repair from traumatic experience. The repair to the intergenerational relationship in the clinical work described relied on the use of a non-linear dynamic system's view of the therapeutic action of play benefitting the development of the child. The article further develops the term 'high infant mortality trap' as an expression of the concept supposing a mutual relationship between short average birth intervals (corresponding usually to high fertility) and high level of infant mortality. This mutual relationship is among other a consequence of the effect of the same or similar factors standing behind both processes (fertility, infant mortality). In the paper, this relationship is evaluated through the effect of the selected explanatory variables on the probability of infant death (using the Binomial logistic regression) as well as length of birth-birth intervals or time duration from the infant death to the successive birth (using the Cox regression). In the analytical part, the concept is evaluated using data from two localities in Bohemia (today the Czech Republic). The localities differ according the socio-economic as well as ethnic characteristics, what might have affected also the demographic behaviour. The area of the Central Europe has not been fully described in the historical demographic works yet, so this study brings the possibility of comparison of this area with other areas already studied. This article is concerned with the everyday 'spatial tactics' deployed by children in a street situation in order to deal with notions of public space that define them as 'out of place', marginal and deviant. Using photovoice, we reconstruct former street children's definitions of and feelings about their spaces in the city, bringing into view a complex set of social problems, attitudes and strategies that moves beyond the traditional binary notion of street children as either deviants or victims. This work points to the importance of finding ways to ensure the voices of marginalized and disadvantaged children are heard and presents the narratives that are important to our understanding of their worlds. Analyzing their spatiality in contexts of conflict, belonging and resistance, we found that children and youth in a street situation are mainly concerned with empowering themselves and resisting dominant labels and police repression. Children's identities constitute and are constituted by the everyday spaces they inhabit. Though there are innumerable accounts of what adults think public spaces like subways and city streets mean to children, fewer recorded accounts exist from young children themselves (Faulkner and Zolkos 2016, "Introduction." In Critical Childhood Studies and the Practice of Interdisciplinarity, ix–xvii. Lexington: Lanham.). In this work I explored 2- – 5-year-old children's conceptions of public space through the photographs they took and the narratives they told in and around those images. I focused on how children imaged their spaces, how their narrative fragments added layers of story to the images' contents, and how their photographic performances acted as 'visual voice' (Burke 2005, "'Play in Focus': Children Researching Their Own Spaces and Places for Play." Children Youth and Environments 15 (1): 27–53.), highlighting for us how they see themselves and their positions within the larger urban environment. The young children's photographs depicted their growing autonomy and mobility within an urban context, attunements to non-human forms of the city, and knowledge of what it means to live in their communities. Background: The exact cause of preeclampsia remains unknown. The past decade has seen an ongoing debate on the relative importance of primipaternity versus prolonged birth/pregnancy interval.Aims: The aim of the current study was to analyze these two major potential risk factors in a high risk population in the Northern suburbs of Adelaide; a socioeconomically disadvantaged area characterized by instable relationships and overall poor health and lifestyle.Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed on all multigravid women birthing at the Lyell McEwin Hospital, Adelaide, from July 2011 to August 2012; 2003 patients were included in this analysis. Basic demographic data, previous pregnancy outcomes, paternity, and birth and pregnancy intervals were recorded.Results: Women with a previously normal pregnancy had a significantly increased risk of developing preeclampsia in subsequent pregnancy with a new paternity (OR: 2.27 [p = .015]). Increasing birth and pregnancy intervals were associated with a significantly increased risk of developing preeclampsia in later pregnancies, with OR 1.39 at 3 years (p = .042) and OR 2.05 at 4 years (p = .002).Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that both prolonged birth interval and primipaternity are independent risk factors for preeclampsia in multigravidae. This paper describes a method to reconstruct birth histories for women in the 1900 and 1910 U. S. census IPUMS samples. The method is an extension of an earlier method developed by Luther and Cho (1988). The basic method relies on the number of children ever born, number of children surviving, number of children coresident in the household and age-specific fertility rates for the population to probabilistically assign an "age" to deceased and unmatched children. Modifications include the addition of an iterative Poisson regression model to fine-tune age-specific fertility inputs. Preeclampsia (PE) can suddenly disrupt a normal pregnancy experience. This project aimed to see how PE was experienced close to the time of birth, in a group of hospital patients. Women with PE who gave birth at The Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, from October 2010 to May 2012 were asked to complete a survey designed with consumer input. There was a 74% response rate. Regarding diagnosis, 90% experienced PE, 2.5% experienced eclampsia and 7.5% experienced HELLP. For 60% of women, their baby was born earlier than expected. Although 67.5% of women knew little about PE prior to pregnancy and diagnosis, 67.5% believed PE was serious or life threatening. Fifty-five percent were afraid that their baby might die. The women in the study identified the need to obtain more information about PE (97.5%), and 60% indicated that their PE experience would either delay or contribute to the decision to not undertake a future pregnancy. This project details that PE can have a substantial psychological effect on patients around the time of birth. Maternity caregivers can direct counselling to address the specific vulnerabilities raised in PE and thus improve the care of women with PE.Impact StatementWhat is already known on this subject? Qualitative research from New Zealand showed that women experiencing preeclampsia (PE) can have a number of psychological issues with their pregnancy experience, including feeling no longer in control of their pregnancy, dealing with an unexpected medicalised preterm birth, and feeling fear for themselves and their baby's life, even if no formal psychiatric issues are identified. A PE support group surveyed their own members and found that these psychological issues are present in most of their members who had PE.Whatthe results of this study add? This study was a survey of 40 women experiencing PE around the time of birth in a tertiary hospital in Melbourne, Australia, to see if these themes could be applied to a general hospital group. There was a 74% response rate. For 60% of women, the baby was born earlier than expected. Although most women knew little about PE prior to diagnosis, 67.5% believed PE was serious or life threatening at diagnosis. More than half (55%) were afraid their baby might die and 47.5% of women identified that separation from their baby impaired their ability to bond. Most women planned to obtain more information about PE (97.5%) and 50% indicated that their PE experience meant they would either delay or not undertake future pregnancy.Whatthe implicationsareof these findings for clinical practice and/or further clinical research? This study demonstrates the significance of psychological factors in the care of women with pre-eclampsia or eclampsia and offers a range of issues that the health care provider can use in discussions with women in the early postnatal period, in the inter-pregnancy interval and in subsequent pregnancies. Further research would ideally involve a large sample in a range of hospital settings (primary through tertiary) to further consider the prevalence and enduring nature of themes identified in the present study.
