Purpose: To examine (1) the association between low language (LL) and caregiver's health-related quality of life (HRQoL), (2) whether persistent LL affects caregiver's HRQoL and (3) whether child social-emotional-behavioural (SEB) difficulties attenuates the association between LL and caregiver's HRQoL. Method: Data were from the Early Language in Victoria Study (ELVS) and the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC). Caregiver's HRQoL was measured using the EuroQoL-5 dimensions and the Assessment of Quality of Life-8 dimensions. Language ability was determined using the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals (CELF)-Preschool-2nd or 4th edition (ELVS) and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-3rd edition or CELF-4 recalling sentences subscale (LSAC). Child SEB difficulties were measured using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Multivariable linear regression was used for the analysis. Result: At 11–12 years, an association between LL and reduced caregiver's HRQoL was found in LSAC, but not in ELVS. Persistent LL from 4–11 years seemed to not affect caregivers' HRQoL in either cohort. Child SEB difficulties attenuated the association between caregiver's HRQoL and LL. Conclusion: Both LL and SEB difficulties contributed to reduced caregiver's HRQoL at children age 11–12 years. Purpose: To examine (1) the patterns of service use and costs associated with language impairment in a community cohort of children from ages 4–9 years and (2) the relationship between language impairment and health service utilisation. Method: Participants were children and caregivers of six local government areas in Melbourne participating in the community-based Early Language in Victoria Study (ELVS). Health service use was reported by parents. Costs were valued in Australian dollars in 2014, from the government and family perspectives. Depending on age, the Australian adapted Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals – Pre-school, 2nd Edition (CELF-P2) or the CELF, 4th Edition (CELF4) was used to assess expressive and receptive language. Result: At 5, 7 and 9 years respectively 21%, 11% and 8% of families reported using services for speech and/or language concerns. The annual costs associated with using services averaged A$612 (A$255 to government, A$357 to family) at 5 years and A$992 (A$317 to government, A$675 to family) at 7 years. Children with persistent language impairment had significantly higher service costs than those with typical language. The paper reports on a study designed to develop a risk model that can best predict single-word spelling in seven-year-old children when they were aged 4 and 5. Test measures, personal characteristics and environmental influences were all considered as variables from a community sample of 971 children. Strong concurrent correlations were found between single-word spelling and single-word reading while expressive language and, to a lesser extent, receptive language were less strongly correlated. Predictors of single-word spelling at ages 4 and 5 were dominated by child-related factors such as letter knowledge, a history of speech impairment and expressive language along with maternal word reading ability. Based on the strength of the predictive factors identified at both age 4 and 5, our results provide initial support for using a targeted model for screening pre-schoolers at risk of not mastering spelling in a timely manner. Following a biopsychosocial model, the study investigated the role of child factors (gender, IQ), maternal factors (psychological distress, maternal education and vocabulary, maternal distress) and environmental factors (SES) in the relationship between language impairment and behaviour problems in preschool children. Participants were drawn from the Early Language in Victoria Study (ELVS) a prospective, longitudinal study examining the epidemiology and natural history of language impairment. The study reports on 1257 participants from the ELVS who completed questionnaires at 2 and 4 years and also completed face-to-face assessments at 4 years of age. Information was collected on child language, non-verbal cognition and social-emotional development; maternal vocabulary, maternal psychological distress and parent–child interaction; and SES. This study showed that language impairment is specifically associated with hyperactivity and peer problems but not anxiety and conduct problems at the preschool stage. Children with language impairment were at a higher risk for clinical levels of ‘abnormal’ behaviour which could lead to a psychiatric diagnosis than typically developing children. An examination of biopsychosocial variables associated with language and behaviour revealed that although language ability was a predictor of behaviour at both 2 years and 4 years of age, maternal distress was a stronger predictor of behaviour, with the association stronger for boys than for girls. Early intervention directed to children, especially boys, with language impairment deserves further attention, especially during the preschool period, in order to ameliorate the impact of language impairment on peer relationships and disruptive behaviour in later school years. The association between specific language impairment (SLI), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and working memory (WM) was examined. WM has been implicated in language acquisition and models of ADHD; however, evidence for WM deficits in SLI and ADHD has been inconsistent. The components of Baddeley's WM model were investigated in 18 children with SLI, 16 children with ADHD, 11 children with comorbid SLI+ADHD, and 24 typically developing (TD) children. The presence of SLI resulted in deficits in more components of WM than the presence of ADHD indicating that children with SLI are more vulnerable to WM deficits than those with ADHD. This paper reports on school readiness (SR) and its predictors in five- to six-year-old children from a prospective, longitudinal study of children from eight months to seven years (the Early Language in Victoria Study - ELVS). The ELVS children came from a representative sample of children recruited though the State Government Infant and Child Health Centres at the age of eight months who were studied at yearly intervals with a combination of parent surveys and face-to-face assessments. The study had a focus on language, pre-literacy and behavioural development. In pre-school and preparatory grade, teachers of the children completed a brief questionnaire rating SR characteristics, including cognitive, language and personal/social competencies. The data bank on these children provided a set of hypothesised child and family predictors of the SR score which were tested via factor analysis and regression analyses. Significant predictors of SR in the equation were evident from two years of age, and were all related to language and pre-literacy factors from two to six years. Twelve per cent of the children showed language impairment (LI) at five years according to their scores on the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals, 4th edition (CELF-4). In an additional analysis we found that these children were significantly lower on SR; they were also of lower social class compared with the remainder of the sample. The most influential factors in readiness for school were child language competencies and pre-literacy capacities, including phonemic awareness and letter knowledge. Preparation for school involving systematic emphasis on language and pre-literacy enrichment is recommended for all children before school entry and particularly for children at risk, including those coming from socio-economic disadvantage and those with delayed and impaired early language development.
