Accordingly, its name is accompanied by no fewer than eight heterotypic synonyms which were used for species described from Îles Kerguelen (Bednarek-Ochyra, 2014) and South America (Deguchi, 1984; Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra, 2012a; Bednarek-Ochyra, 2018). Bedn.-Ochyra & Ochyra (Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra, 2012b; Ochyra & van Rooy, 2013), and effectivly hide the true diagnostic characters of the species. It is worth noting that the report of I B. orthotrichacea i from the Falkland Islands (Ochyra & Broughton, 2004) was based on a misdetermination of I B. sudetica i (Funck) Bedn.-Ochyra & Ochyra (Ochyra I et al i ., 2015), as is the case with the record from the South Sandwich Islands (Convey I et al i ., 2000) which correctly refers to I B. didyma i (Mont.) Bedn.-Ochyra & Ochyra (Ochyra I et al i ., 2008). Hitherto, about 140 species of moss have been recorded from this archipelago and a number of them have been found during a recent bryological survey, including some species new to science (e.g. Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra, 1998; Ochyra & Poulsen, 2003; Ochyra, 2010; Ellis I et al i ., 2012a; Ochyra I et al i ., 2014). An Afro-American distribution is being demonstrated for an increasingly large number of moss species, primarily tropical lowland and montane species (see Ochyra I et al i ., 1992 and references therein), but this type of distribution is also shown by a relatively small group of south-temperate cool-adapted moss species (e.g. Ochyra & Lewis Smith, 1998; Blockeel I et al i ., 2008; Li I et al i ., 2009; Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra, 2010, 2013; Porley & Edwards, 2010; Ochyra & Bednarek-Ochyra, 2013) and I L. stellaticuspis i is the next addition to it.
