Police use of force data varies widely between jurisdictions, in the quality, extent, and format of the data provided. This article presents an argument that standardization of police use of force data would allow for more effective statistical analysis, leading to more effective comparisons across jurisdictions and within individual jurisdictions. The article first establishes a definition of use of force, outlines the data that is currently available, and explains why lack of standardization is an issue that statisticians and communities should care about. It concludes with a discussion of next steps for the statistical community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
