This study investigated the physiological and stress indices of scavenging chickens in LAFARGE and Dangote cement factories located at Ewekoro and Ibese, respectively and respective adjourning communities of Ogun State, Nigeria. One hundred adult scavenging chickens comprising of 25 from each location were used. The birds were caught at night on their perch and kept in furnished cages till the next morning. Data were collected on their rectal temperature, pulse rate, and respiratory rate. Also 5 mL blood was collected through the wing vein of each chicken. Highest (p < 0.05) pulse rate (215.64 beat/minute) and respiratory rate (19.90 breath/minute) were recorded among the chickens at LAFARGE area. Highest (p < 0.05) packed cell volume (28.06%), hemoglobin (4.01 g/dL), monocyte (4.28%) and glucose (256.53 g/dL) were recorded among ones at Ibese (Dangote). White blood cell (6488.89 × 103µL) was highest (p < 0.05) in chickens at Ewekoro (LAFARGE). The study concluded that cement factories infringe on health status of scavenging chickens in the domains. Effective environmental mitigation programme should be put in place for enhanced welfare of the birds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Petroleum pollution of coastal areas such as Nigeria's Niger Delta is increasingly alarming. After an oil spill, aquatic organisms, including indigenous microbial communities are affected, leading to an increased abundance of oil degraders in the affected environment. During the last decade, microbial ecology research has shifted from cultivation and characterization of individual environmental isolates to metagenomics studies that are focused on the characterization of community dynamics and composition. In this study, we determined the indigenous bacterial community in water bodies polluted with crude oil in Delta State, Nigeria by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). Oil hydrocarbon composition was determined by Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry analysis (GC–MS) and the physical-chemical dynamics were assessed using standard procedures. Results revealed Proteobacteria (76.9%), Bacteroidetes (8.5%) and Firmicutes (1.1%) as the dominant phyla. GC–MS data revealed different petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations across the seasons and locations sampled. The indigenous bacterial community included the prevalence of oil degrades with Methylotenera as the major genus. This study suggests that Methylotenera could be a useful agent for bioremediation in the Niger Delta. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research took the form of an investigation into the applicability of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as strength modifiers in asphalt road construction. Samples of thoroughly washed, naturally dried and shredded PET wastes were collected. The optimum binder content (OBC) of the unmodified asphalt mix was determined. The bitumen used for the control mix was replaced with PET waste in 1, 3 and 5% proportions. Another sample was prepared with the addition of 1, 3 and 5% of PET waste while the OBC was fixed. The samples were subjected to Marshall Stability (MS) and Marshall Flow (MF) tests. Bulk density (BD), void in total mix (VTM), and void filled with bitumen (VFB) were determined. The results were compared with standards. The PET content obtained that conforms to the specification in AASHTO, ASTM and Nigeria Federal Ministry of Works standards was found to be 1% addition to OBC by weight of aggregate. This percentage PET content was 15% by weight of bitumen with BD, VTM, VFB, MF and MS being 2.38 kg/m3, 3.33%, 82.20%, 4.00 mm and 17.01 kN, respectively. The 1% PET modified asphalt was found to be useful for pavement construction and reduces the quantity of plastic waste in our environment. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
