Since 2020, a wave of academic and trade books has brought unprecedented attention to queer nightlife. Whereas this special issue of TSQ advances queer nightlife as a site for continued study in sociology, this forum opens a conversation between ten leading scholars who have often carried out their work in distinct social science and humanities fields, including sociology, geography, ethnomusicology, performance studies, religion, and media studies. In a spirit of academic generosity, they become interlocutors who exchange stories, analytical frameworks, and investments with the goal that they might learn from each other; they bond over shared nightlife and research experiences, including ethnographic methods and attention to affect. This forum poses questions and insights that will enrich how future scholarship can build toward more rigorous, capacious, and imaginative queer methods – within and beyond sociology. This article outlines a case study of the partnership between Polish public libraries and Legimi, a commercial distributor of digital books operating on both the trade book and library markets. Legimi and representatives of the libraries were interviewed in order to examine the reasons why libraries contract with commercial actors, the extent to which these services are used, the rationale for selecting the billing models, and which funding sources support libraries in this regard. Arrangements for Legimi's services are negotiated mainly through library consortia. Currently, approximately 42% of all libraries in Poland provide digital books through Legimi. AbstractThis practitioner paper describes an inquiry-based approach applying the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) framework to facilitate instruction of September 11, 2001 history, and its impact on post-9/11 society. An upper elementary level inquiry teaches the Boatlift Rescue from Manhattan Island, and a secondary level inquiry addresses the concepts of loss and persistence. Enduring issues are humanity and resiliency. The featured sources are children’s and youth literature related to 9/11 history and post-9/11 society. Children’s and youth trade books offer educators a valuable starting point to teach about 9/11 and post-9/11 history. For each inquiry instructional strategies are highlighted that encourage students to make their thinking visible when reading trade books and using primary sources from 9/11 repositories. Sixty-six million years, ninety-three million miles... What do these numbers really mean? Elementary science concepts that involve large numbers require students to have conceptual understanding of what one million represents and how it differs in orders of magnitude from smaller numbers such as ten thousand. These concepts also require students to have procedural fluency with estimation strategies. In this article, we presents strategies that integrate science, math, and trade books for simultaneously addressing NGSS and CCSSM standards and practices grounded in conceptual understanding of large numbers. Regional book distribution was central to political mobilization in the localities during the English Civil Wars. A contextual approach, building up a picture from print and manuscript sources such as journals, reveals the multiple ways in which books circulated, through a case study of Devon and the south west. In contrast to recent emphasis on activist publishers, these sources highlight the significance of book distribution by puritan clergy. Book distribution in Devon was dominated by the unmatched south-western network of the London publisher Francis Eglesfield (publisher of Robert Herrick's Hesperides). However, the political agency of book distribution lies beyond the conventional book trade with the activities of local ministers, exemplified by John Bond of Exeter, Thomas Larkham of Tavistock, and John Syms of Sheepstor and Plymouth. Their distribution efforts provided multiple routes by which books reached their political audiences and created opportunities for political participation in parish communities. Michael Harris, a historian and founding editor of Media History, passed away in December 2022. He was known for his research on the eighteenth-century newspaper press and the book trade. Harris played a significant role in establishing newspaper and periodical history as a mainstream area of study. He authored several important articles and a monograph on London newspapers in the 1720s and 30s. Additionally, Harris co-founded the Annual Conferences on Book Trade History and was instrumental in the creation and development of the Journal of Newspaper and Periodical History, Studies in Newspaper and Periodical History, and Media History. Tobias Smollett's works were among the most frequently illustrated in the eighteenth century. Smollett's eclectic output encountered equally diverse types of illustration that both accompanied these works and inhabited their own independent creative identity. Frontispieces occupy a unique place within this wider context. This article investigates two main points: first, booksellers deemed Smollett a saleable author, deserving of potentially expensive illustrated additions that enhanced his works' circulation on a competitive book market; second, these illustrations were considered useful visual tools in deciphering the verbal text, with frontispieces serving their own specific introductory function. Two types of publication by Smollett—his translated texts, Gil Blas (1748) and Don Quixote (1755), and original prose fictions, Roderick Random (1748) and Peregrine Pickle (1751)—and their earliest frontispieces (by Francis Hayman, Henry Fuseli, and an anonymous artist) shed new light on Smollett's early reception, and on the wider forms and functions of eighteenth-century frontispieces. This article explores industry perceptions on youth and "young streamers" and how these notions inform strategies for remaining relevant for the future, drawing on 39 qualitative interviews with CEO/top-level executives working in the Norwegian music, film, television, and book industries. The article combines perspectives on sensemaking processes in organisations and critical media industry studies to account for how executives in times of shifting realities work within industry discourses to interpret new conditions and stay in action. It finds that executives share an understanding of youth as different from older audiences, representing a new "media generation". The preference of preschool children for interactive traditional paper books has long been proved. More novel than traditional interactive books are the Augmented Reality (AR) books, which took a place in the book market for more than a decade now. For this study, we have used the Mosaic approach as a form of participatory research. The main methods used included children's presentations, interviews, observations, photo-taking, and taking part in a voting procedure. Our findings showed that the requirements for using AR books are not yet met by mobile devices that the youngest users have, so their audience is still limited. Even though the AR book seemed to be more promising for engaging children's attention longer, this was not possible because of the constraints imposed by the very delicate screen handling and children expressed their preference for the traditional interactive book. This six-day research project examined the potential for how trade books and primary sources can be used in concert with each other to develop middle school students' disciplinary thinking skills in the manners advocated for in the C3 Framework. The project was focused on the trade book Thurgood, a picture book biography about Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Students drew images and used words to describe Thurgood Marshall's civic identity and answered metacognitive analysis prompts explaining their thinking and work. Students' work samples suggest that they employed a nuanced integration of both civic and historical thinking to articulate how Thurgood Marshall's lived experiences influenced his civic action and civic identity. Book publicists are important intermediaries in generating earned media attention, creating discoverability opportunities, and getting new books into the hands of potential readers. Despite their important function in book culture, publicists' labour in producing and framing value in the book industry is often rendered invisible in the industry and scholarly literature, which we trace back to field-defining conceptual models, particularly Robert Darnton's Communications Circuit (1982). This article draws on interviews with eight Australian publicists to make visible, interrogate, and explain the material and symbolic labour involved in the affective relationship-building and cultural framing work of publicity. This article explores publicists' day-to-day work, their relationships with authors, colleagues and the media, and publicity's function in contemporary book culture. Book publicists are important cultural intermediaries: they are integral to the economic and social contexts of publishing, and influence and shape cultural tastes and value through strategic promotional work, resulting in considerable effects across the domains of production and reception. This article presents and discusses an experiment with Bruce Pascoe's Dark Emu as an inaugural case study of how we might apply the International Integrated Reporting () Framework to an Australian book title. It represents a novel approach to the question of how to be attentive to the problem of value in Australian culture, building on recent research by Meyrick, Phiddian and Barnett and complementing contemporary work on Australian book industry economics by Zwar, Throsby and others at Macquarie University. The results of this experiment indicate that integrated reporting, and in particular the framework—an established, rigorous and internationally recognised form of reporting—can be effectively applied to a single local book title, drawing exclusively on publicly available data in a manner that effectively and efficiently articulates types of value that exceed the economic. While the framework has its limitations, my overarching conclusion is that this form of value reporting has strong potential to contribute to timely and effective local book industry advocacy into the future. A science classroom culture that extends a rightful presence to all students is constructed through tapping into student experience, culture, and interest. There is a small but growing volume of scholarly research and technological experiments in relation to blockchain and book publishing. However, to date, appropriate and feasible blockchain models for rights management and copyright exploitation remain largely untested. Furthermore, extant research has focussed on author-centred models of intellectual property and royalty management, with limited focus on publisher-centred models. Consequently, there are few practical prototypes and little understanding of blockchain models that are mutually beneficial for both writers and publishers. This article presents the findings of a two-year research project, No Point in Stopping, that explores a publisher-centred model of blockchain publishing that creates value for micro-publishers. The project developed a custom blockchain prototype and digital ledger to manage intellectual property agreements, royalty payments, and the tracking of both physical in-store and online purchases. The authors argue that for publishers, blockchain can create and monetise new digital publishing products from the drafting and editing process, thereby using intellectual property that would normally be an input into the publishing process rather than a commercial output. Blockchain can also create a new contract and revenue system that disrupts the current fee-for-service model by paying royalties to all creative professionals involved in this publishing process. Modelling joint dynamics of liquid vanilla options is crucial for arbitrage-free pricing of illiquid derivatives and managing risks of option trade books. This paper develops a nonparametric model for the European options book respecting underlying financial constraints and while being practically implementable. We derive a state space for prices which are free from static (or model-independent) arbitrage and study the inference problem where a model is learnt from discrete time series data of stock and option prices. We use neural networks as function approximators for the drift and diffusion of the modelled SDE system, and impose constraints on the neural nets such that no-arbitrage conditions are preserved. In particular, we give methods to calibrate neural SDE models which are guaranteed to satisfy a set of linear inequalities. In important accounts of Mary Davys's short epistolary work Familiar Letters Betwixt a Gentleman and a Lady (1725), Riley (1995) and Wakely (2005) suggest Davys subverts the amatory mode through its Whig, and feminist, inversion of the Tory seduction narrative. This paper's identification of an early edition of the text, printed for J. Roberts, and attributed to the pseudonym "Dick Fisher" in 1718 complicates these accounts while providing a new vantage point from which to read the text. Importantly, new prefatory and paratextual material associated with the publication demonstrate both Davys's commercial acumen and the porous character of the book trade in the early eighteenth century. Using this publication as a case study, this paper examines authorial agency and the complex nature of book production in the early British book trade, arguing that understanding such multiplicities is necessary for the reading of early women writers and their work. Applying a translation policy model proposed by Gonzáles Núñez, the researchers focus on three translation policy aspects: translation management, translation practice and translation beliefs. While the Bureau was China's key official publisher producing foreign-language books and translations for export, the paper reconstructs its translation policy and offers a bibliometric analysis of its production over a span of fifty years. While most translations and publications of Portuguese literature received source-country subsidies, this is not the case in Italy, where only 18% of translations were supported. Most often, however, subsides are aimed directly at publishers of literature in translation, who act as the key gatekeepers of the intercultural dissemination process: they buy translation rights, hire translators and manage the production and promotion activities. As the Soviet Union and its challenge to the West recede, we still have much to learn about the Slavic book trade and about the rise of the great Russian, East European, and Eurasian area studies collections in academic libraries in 20th-century North America. Who were the book dealers behind these collections, which still inform so much discovery and knowledge-making today? What can we learn about these personalities and their work? One such book dealer was George Sabo (1896–1983), who followed two brothers to Pittsburgh in 1913 but made his career in New York after 1920, first with a "steamship agency" for fellow immigrants. As a Carpatho-Rusyn from the Kingdom of Hungary, Sabo took his outlook and cultural capital from an ethno-religious group at the very center of the Slavic world and in remarkable symbiosis with nearly all its peoples, languages, identities, and states. Sabo's native village (Orechová) became part of Czechoslovakia after World War I and his wife's (Haidosh) part of the Soviet Union after World War II. Sabo's Carpatho-Rusyn-ness equipped him well as a Slavic-American book dealer and enterprising New Yorker, and we can illuminate much of his life, family, network, surroundings, and career in the city and beyond from many kinds of sources. During a classroom-based study, Grade 4 students were provided with multiple opportunities to develop their visual meaning-making skills and competences, as well as their aesthetic understanding of and critical thinking about multimodal texts. Intentionally designed instruction during the research included a range of activities focused on specific elements of visual art and design. Student participants read and discussed, and wrote about selections of children's literature during Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science. The Sea Book was one of the books featured during an interdisciplinary unit on Ocean Literacy, a component of the overall case study research. Content analysis of the students' responses about the trade book revealed their capacity to engage in five synergistic visual reading skills. As well, data analysis revealed how the students perceived, described, and interpreted the use of color, visual point of view, typography, framing and line in Milner's artwork as fulfilling multiple, and often concomitant, meaning-making purposes. The findings demonstrated that instruction about how to read and understand visual representations can enhance students' knowledge and interpretation of content conveyed through multiple modes of representation, and develop students' capacity and agency for critically reading visual and multimodal texts. This memoir tells the story of how Veronica Ahrens-Puławski came to America, settled in San Francisco, California, worked in the business of importing books and periodicals from the Soviet Union, and became the owner and manager of the Russian bookstore, Globus, for 34 years (from 1984–2018). Ahrens-Puławski describes the challenges she faced in learning how to run a business, adopting to new computer technologies, and adapting to changes in the Soviet-Russian book trade brought about first by perestroika and later by the information revolution and the internet. In this article, I discuss one approach of implementing thematic teaching in the high school social studies classroom exploring the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. First, a short summary for the type of high school social studies classroom envisioned in the C3 Framework by NCSS is discussed. Then, I define thematic teaching and the benefits of doing this type of social studies instruction. Next, a brief overview of the benefits of using trade books focusing on social studies topics is provided. Finally, three activities are given. Each activity uses a social studies trade book connected to three different civil rights activists during the 1950s and 1960s: Thurgood Marshall, Fred Shuttlesworth, and Fannie Lou Hamer. This article argues that reissues – whether in the form of repackaged and re-released recordings that have gone out of print, recordings republished in new media with the change of playback technology, or collected as historical compilation albums – form a hub of activities by jazz collectors, critics, producers, and historians – roles often filled by the same person. As curated aural texts, reissues, in recurring fashion over jazz's recorded past, form connective tissue for the distorted historical narrative of jazz as representing a "coherent whole." The article tracks three broad historical moments in which reissues have played a crucial role in constructing the "jazz tradition" commonly portrayed in textbooks: (1) the rise of the reissues market through Commodore Records, (2) the pairing of collected tracks on compilation albums with a flourishing jazz history book trade in the postwar era, and (3) combining nostalgia for music of past decades with the advent of new recording and playback technology, and the move to remastered, completist collectors' series exemplified by Mosaic Records at the turn of the 21st century. This paper studies the Burt Award, as a representation of Book awards, for the purpose of analysing complexities surrounding literary prizes as pointed by various scholars. Taking into consideration James English's observation that prizes demonstrate how modes of capital are intertwined, in this article I investigate whether or not the Burt Award advocates prevailing social political agendas, like fighting corruption and HIV, promoting gender equality, and protecting the environment. I also seek to establish whether the award forges a relation between publishers and authors in their quest to produce winning texts. Employing Erica Hateley's metaphor of mirrors (Reflecting while Reflexing), this article studies seven titles under the Burt Award's winning list and observes that together with its undeniable importance to the book industry and the general public in Tanzania, the Burt Award represents a mode of intertwining not only when it comes to the agendas but also in the author-award-publisher trinity, which is essential for specific texts to win and for the existence of the award. Within the last fifteen years, a growing number of public libraries throughout the United States have started to rethink how their materials are cataloged and arranged. While the Dewey Decimal System has dominated library catalogs to this point, an increasing number of libraries are choosing to replace Dewey with variations of the Book Industry Standards and Communications (BISAC) model. This paper offers a case studies on four public libraries, two of which transitioned successfully, one in process of adopting a new scheme, and one that has since reverted to Dewey. It argues that libraries that successfully transition do so because they achieve staff embracement and public acceptance of the new system through effective communication and descriptive signage. Aphra Behn's relationship with her publishers has frequently been characterized as gendered and unequal, framing Behn as a powerless woman deliberately exploited by "literary pimps" such as Samuel Briscoe and Charles Gildon. This notion plays into both the well-established "actress/writer as prostitute" trope and the idea of Grub Street hackery. But this implication of a sleazy and exploitative commercial relationship between writer and publisher, and moreover one inflected by sex, relies on uninspected assumptions about the book trade. Was Behn as professional writer really treated any differently because of her sex? This paper investigates the relationship between Behn and the booksellers by looking at the usual practices of the book trade itself. It considers Behn's imprints both during her lifetime in the 1670s and 1680s and in the decade after her death, arguing for a better understanding of the post-Restoration trade. Successful practitioners (women as well as men) necessarily served their own commercial interests, valuing the marketable and profitable above the literary. Viewed in this context, Behn's printed output and her treatment by publishers, in life and after death, owed more to the habits of the book trade than to her sex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nigeria appears to have the largest book market in Africa, aided by its population and oil wealth. However, its publishing industry has experienced more setbacks than successes. Military rule marked a watershed in the nation's political history, causing the breakdown of much of the publishing industry, among other things. What was the state of book publishing during the mid-1980s to the late 1990s of the military era? What were the channels of publishing available to literary writers? How were their books circulated? In examining these questions, I trace the ways in which self-publishing emerged in Nigeria, its networks and their impact on public readership to demonstrate how self-publishing challenges the communications circuit model theorized by Robert Darnton. I argue that self-publishing subverts the traditional model of book production by creating a viable alternative through which literary writers could have their works published and mobilize themselves against military tyranny. Finally, I survey the nature of self-published texts in circulation during the period under review to demonstrate how self-publishing problematizes Pascale Casanova's ideas of the world republic of letters. Relationships are key to the success of any library project, and relations with the vendor's staff are too often overlooked or viewed as adversarial. Focusing on automated system and online electronic resource vendors, different functional departments of the vendor's staff are examined with an eye toward the benefits that a good relationship can bring to support the project. This article reviews publisher and vendor use of library advisory boards. While they are not new to the information industry, library advisory boards have assumed new importance. From the industry perspective, library advisory boards provide valuable market feedback concerning products and services. For librarians, membership on library advisory boards is an opportunity to learn about new products, provide feedback on existing products, and better understand the information marketplace. Recent literature is reviewed and a number of publishers and vendors are surveyed. The most important thing for a book vendor in managing customer relationships is successfully managing the company's own resources. Book vendors must be able to hire and train staff who understand the changing needs of libraries and who are able to influence the company's strategic direction and daily operation so that these needs are met. In recent years, book vendors have had to go beyond bookselling, and provide technical services to help libraries to become more efficient. This paper explores the structure of the book publishing industry post digitalisation, analysing the choices of the publishers and authors. The introduction of successful e-book readers has belatedly given digitalisation the characteristics of a disruptive technology by making self-publishing a serious option for authors. This has been supported by the entry of new types of intermediaries and the strengthening of others. These changes have reduced the general requirements for an author to get a book self-published. As a result, a larger share of the surplus from the book industry is likely to go to authors, explaining the significant increase in the supply of books. The potential oversupply of books has created a new problem by increasing competition and making consumer searches more difficult. We argue that digitalisation has shifted the potential for market failure from an inadequate supply of books to asymmetric information about quality. Estimating the demand of books is an important business-planning task for publishing companies. This study identifies, quantifies, and generalizes the sales drivers of children's and young adult literature books and investigates whether quantitative prediction models improve prerelease sales predictions. We compare the model-based predictions with prerelease management sales predictions of a subsample provided by a large German publisher. Based on a sample of 542 titles that were published in Germany, we examine (a) the relevant drivers (elasticities) for economic success and (b) analyze the prediction performance of the models using two specifications of multiplicative market response models for this highly relevant market. The quantitative model approach outperforms management heuristics, reducing the prediction error by up to 45%. We further highlight the practical feasibility of simple market response models. Despite the UK government's Northern Powerhouse agenda, the UK literary industry remains staunchly focused on a predominantly London-base. When it comes to Northern writers, representations of the North in contemporary literature and Northern voices on the stage, small and big screens, UK government has suggested that the literary industry is guilty of persistently underrepresenting the 55.4 million members of the public who live outside the capital city. This research adopts a case study approach to the problem, examining one regional creative industry award, the Northern Writers' Awards (NWAs), as a potential model of intervention for enhancing participation, professional development and talent pipelines of Northern writers to the wider UK literary industry. The research analyses how and why the NWAs: enable career development opportunities for creative talent through partnership-based training and knowledge exchange; retain the economic impact of regional creative talent to improve the economy of the North by developing creative writers within the region; and enhance diversity in the UKwriting industry by addressing issues of representation and by reaching writers from all backgrounds across the North. Given Isabella Whitney's reputation as the first English professional woman writer, her books are fertile ground for the recent material turn in the study of early modern women's writing. Women's engagement in book production meant that their texts were mediated through the work of booksellers, printers, and other agents in the print trade. We need to remember that writers make texts, but books are made by publishers and printers. Whitney's own working relationship with her printer-publisher, Richard Jones, is well-known. Yet, the precise nature of Jones's role in the production of Whitney's books and her fashioning as an "Auctor" remains shadowy, largely because questions of agency have not been explored through the technologies of book production. To understand the ways in which Whitney's texts were mediated through print, and her participation in this process, this essay will focus on how her books of poetry were made, starting with the role of her printer-publisher, Richard Jones. Several cities in Sweden have been providing book-printing facilities since the 1640s. In our quantitative and explorative analysis of library catalogs from the National Library of Sweden and the National Library of Finland we identify the general trends in publishing, how book-printing has been affected by political events, and how printing developed at different paces in different parts of the realm. We have developed a new method for analyzing the totality of publishing through extensive data harmonization and comprehensive statistical analysis, and by treating library catalogs not as an endpoint of bibliographic research but as an inherently rich source of information. This facilitated the quantitative assessment of printing in the Swedish realm based on the metadata contained in library catalogs. Our data-driven approach to the transformation of public discourse demonstrates that whereas the amount of printed material grew steadily, political ruptures affected the development of printing. We also suggest that the culture of books and printing is best understood through the dynamics of competing intellectual hubs consisting of the university cities and the political center in Stockholm.
