Objective: Athletes typically report a high prevalence of mental health issues and face significant barriers within the sporting environment that prevent help seeking. However, little is known about how retired or non-elite athletes engage with support; this lack of empirical data is even more pronounced in the case of sleep disorders. Method: A cross-sectional online survey was completed by current and former athletes (n = 946; 495 women, 444 men, 7 non-binary) from all sports and competition levels in seven countries. Self-disclosed diagnosis history, help-seeking behaviours, and functional impact of sleep and mental health disorders were assessed. Results: Comparable rates of mental health disorders were observed between current athletes (39.3%) and former athletes (42.0%), OR = 1.17, p =.337. Similarly, comparable rates of sleep disorders were observed between current athletes (25.4%) and former athletes (30.9%), OR = 1.20, p =.298. Men reported lower mental health disorder prevalence than women (32.9% vs. 46.3%), OR = 1.82, p <.001. Gender differences were also evident in the types of disorders reported. For sleep disorders, men were less likely to seek assistance from a psychologist than women (8.4% vs. 26.2%), p <.001,φ = 0.23. No differences in help seeking avenues for mental health were observed. Comorbid disorders had more frequent functional impairment than individual sleep or mental health disorders. Conclusions: These self-reported prevalence estimates have significance for practitioners and clinicians. Data indicates the most prevalent types of disorders in these populations and where athletes typically engage in support. Evaluating the time course of these disorders can inform health promotion strategies and treatment methods for practitioners and support staff. Former athletes present similar prevalence of sleep and mental health problems to current athletes, despite the removal of sport specific demands and barriers to help seeking. Clinical presentation of both insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea (COMISA) is common. Approximately 30% of clinical cohorts with OSA have insomnia symptoms and vice versa. The underlying pathophysiology of COMISA is multifactorial. This poses a complex clinical challenge. Currently, there are no clinical guidelines or recommendations outside of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTi). Clinically translatable precision medicine approaches to characterize individual causes or endotypes may help optimize future pharmacological management of COMISA. This review article provides an up-to-date account of COMISA and its consequences, the underlying pathophysiology of sleep apnea, insomnia and COMISA, current treatment approaches and limitations, pharmacotherapy targets and future priorities. There are multiple promising emerging therapies, but clinical trial data specifically in COMISA populations are lacking. This is a priority for future investigation to inform development of evidence-based guidelines. Pharmacotherapies, particularly for insomnia, do not target the underlying causes of the disorder thus, are indicated for short-term use only and should remain second line. Future multidisciplinary research should be directed toward the multifactorial nature of COMISA and the challenges of adapting COMISA treatment in clinical practice and overcoming the practical barriers that health-care providers and consumers encounter. High-resolution two-phase flow data in the rod bundle are important in the development and validation of high-fidelity models for computational fluid dynamics and subchannel codes, in particular, those pertaining to light water reactor cooling systems. The Michigan Adiabatic Rod Bundle Flow Experiment (MARBLE) has been constructed as a modular assembly of an 8 × 8 lattice rod bundle to simulate scaled pressurized water reactor and boiling water reactor subchannel assemblies. To establish a high-spatial resolution database of the void fraction in the reactor fuel assembly geometries, tomographic measurements were performed with the High-Resolution Gamma-ray Tomography System, which was designed and built in house; the detector system has a spatial resolution of less than 1.0 mm using 240 LYSO (Lu1.8Y0.2SiO5) scintillators with a fan-beam array. In the present study, the local void fraction was measured with the MARBLE facility under various air-water flow conditions (jg = 0.04 to 0.85 m/s and jl = 0.12 to 0.77 m/s) covering from bubbly to cap-turbulent flows. The local void fraction was also successfully measured under nonuniform and asymmetric air bubble distribution conditions with an investigation of the effect of spacer grids and mixing vanes on void drift across subchannels. While physical therapy may help improve function and quality of life in patients with neurofibromatosis (NF), a standard of care remains to be established. This case report describes the physical therapy management of an individual with NF who was at high fall risk. A 61-year-old male with NF and multiple comorbidities was determined to be at high fall risk by the Dynamic Gait Index, Berg Balance Scale, and Modified Falls Efficacy Scale. Deficits included coordination and strength which limited his ability to ascend and descend stairs or walk on uneven terrain. This reduced his independence at home and in his rural community. Interventions incorporated components of hip and trunk coordination, and addressed balance, strength, and functional mobility. The patient scored above the cutoff for high fall risk on all outcome assessments. This case report describes physical therapy management to reduce fall risk for an individual with NF. Due to the limited research on NF, the treatment plan was developed using evidence-based practice for fall-risk reduction in other neurological disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shift work disorder (SWD) is a circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorder, defined by symptoms of insomnia and excessive levels of sleepiness resulting from work that occurs during non-standard hours. Sleep problems are common in shift workers, yet our understanding of help seeking behaviours for sleep in shift workers is limited. The primary aim of this study was to examine the help seeking behaviours of Australian workers who meet criteria for SWD. Of the 448 (46% of sample, n = 964 total) Australian workers reporting non-standard work hours, 10.5% (n = 41) met the criteria for probable shift work disorder (pSWD). Non-standard workers with pSWD did not seek help for sleep problems at higher rates than workers without SWD. Of the small proportion of workers with pSWD who sought help, general practitioners were the most common healthcare professionals for sleep problems. Self-management was common in workers with pSWD, with a high self-reported prevalence of alcohol use (31.7%) as a sleep management strategy, and caffeine consumption (76.9%) as a sleepiness management strategy. The majority of individuals with pSWD reported the mentality of 'accept it and keep going' as a sleepiness management strategy, highlighting a potential barrier to help seeking behaviour in workers with pSWD. These findings provide novel insight into the help seeking behaviours of those with pSWD. There is a need for further research to understand why individuals at risk for SWD are not actively seeking help, and to develop health promotion and intervention strategies to improve help seeking when needed. The macroautophagy/autophagy-lysosome axis enables the clearance and degradation of cytoplasmic components including protein aggregates, damaged organelles and invading pathogens. Protein aggregation and lysosomal system dysfunction in the brain are common features of several late-onset neurological disorders including Alzheimer disease. Spatial overlap between depletion of the endosomal-sorting complex retromer and MAPT/tau aggregation in the brain have been previously reported. However, whether retromer dysfunction plays a direct role in mediating MAPT aggregation remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that the autophagy-lysosome axis is the primary mode for the clearance of aggregated species of MAPT using both chemical and genetic approaches in cell models of amyloid MAPT aggregation. We show that depletion of the central retromer component VPS35 causes a block in the resolution of autophagy. We establish that this defect underlies marked accumulation of cytoplasmic MAPT aggregates upon VPS35 depletion, and that VPS35 overexpression has the opposite effect. Purpose: To identify how post-stroke disability outcomes are assessed in studies that examine racial/ethnic disparities and to map the identified assessment content to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) across the time course of stroke recovery. Methods: We conducted a scoping review of the literature. Articles published between January 2001 and July 2017 were identified through Scopus, PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: We identified 1791 articles through database and hand-searching strategies. Of the articles, 194 met inclusion criteria for full-text review, and 41 met inclusion criteria for study inclusion. The included studies used a variety of outcome measures encompassing domains within the ICF: body functions, activities, participation, and contextual factors across the time course of stroke recovery. We discovered disproportionate representation among racial/ethnic groups in the post-stroke disability disparities literature. Conclusions: A wide variety of assessments are used to examine disparities in post-stroke disability across the time course of stroke recovery. Several studies have identified disparities through a variety of assessments; however, substantial problems abound from the assessments used including inconsistent use of assessments, lacking evidence on the validity of assessments among racial/ethnic groups, and inadequate representation among all racial/ethnic populations comprising the US. An enhanced understanding of racial/ethnic disparities in post-stroke disability outcomes is inherently important among rehabilitation practitioners who frequently engage with racial/ethnic minority populations across the time course of stroke recovery. Clinicians should carefully consider the psychometric properties of assessment tools to counter potential racial bias. Almost one-third of Australians report having made errors at work that are related to sleep issues. While there is significant literature investigating the role of sleep in workplace health and safety in shiftworking and nightwork operations, long working hours, work-family conflict, and commute times getting longer also impact day workers' sleep behaviors and opportunities. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between sleep duration and disorders, sleep health and hygiene factors, work-related factors and errors at work in Australian workers. From a sample of 1011 Australian adults, age-adjusted binary logistic regression analyses were conducted in 512 workers who provided responses to the question "Thinking about the past three months, how many days did you make errors at work because you were too sleepy or you had a sleep problem?" A number of sleep behaviors and poor sleep hygiene factors were linked with work errors related to sleepiness or sleep problems, with age-adjusted odds of errors (confidence intervals) up to 11.6 times higher (5.4–25.1, p < 0.001) in those that snored, 7.7 (4.6–12.9) times higher in those reporting more than three sleep issues (p < 0.001), 7.0 times higher (3.4–14.8) in short (≤5 hours/night) sleepers (p < 0.021), 6.1 times higher (2.9–12.7) in those staying up later than planned most nights of the week (p< 0.001) and 2.4 times higher (1.6–3.7) in those drinking alcohol ≥3 nights/week before bed (p < 0.001). More than 40% of participants working non-standard hours reported making errors at work, and they were more likely to be young (compared to the main sample of workers) and more likely to engage in work activities in the hour before bed. Sleep factors (other than clinical sleep disorders) were associated with an increased likelihood of sleep-related work errors. Both day workers and those working non-standard hours engage in work, sleep and health behaviors that do not support good sleep health, which may be impacting safety and productivity in the workplace through increased sleepiness-related errors. The dynamic properties of a structural tape used for adhesive bonding applications have been measured at different temperatures to determine its glass transition temperature and damping properties. For this purpose, free layer beams consisting of a base layer steel and the tape layer were vibrated using a resonant beam technique with free-free end conditions. To measure the dynamic values (elastic modulus and loss factor) of the tape, the necessary equations were derived and the frequency dependence of the beams was investigated from -55°C to +60°C. Three beams with different layers were tested. Results have shown that as the temperature increases, the elastic modulus of the tape decreases, while the loss factor of the tape increases up to 20°C and then decreases to a constant level. The results from the three beams are in agreement, showing that the glass transition temperature of the tape is about 20°C, which implies viscoelastic properties at room temperature. Objective: To assess the suitability for use within economic evaluation of a widely used sleep-related instrument (the Epworth Sleepiness Scale [ESS]) by examining its convergent and discriminant validity with two widely used generic preference-based instruments (Short-Form 36 [SF-36] and the Assessment of Quality of Life 4 dimensions [AQoL-4D]). Methods: Data from a cross-section of 2,236 community-dwelling Australian men were analyzed. Convergent validity was investigated using Spearman’s correlation, intraclass correlation, and modified Bland-Altman plots, while discriminant validity was examined using Kruskal Wallis tests. Results: All instruments showed good discriminant validity. The ESS was weakly correlated to the Short Form 6 dimension, or SF-6D (derived from the SF-36) and AQoL-4D utilities (r = 0.20 and r = 0.19, respectively). Correlations between ESS and SF-36/AQoL-4D dimensions measuring the same construct were all in the hypothesized directions but also weak (range of absolute r = 0.00 to 0.18). The level of agreement between the ESS and AQoL-4D was the weakest, followed by that between the ESS and SF-6D. Moderate convergent validity was seen between the utilities. Conclusions: The lack of convergent validity between the ESS and the preference-based instruments shows that sleep-related constructs are not captured by the latter. The ESS has, however, demonstrated good discriminant validity comparable to that of the AQoL-4D and the SF-36/SF-6D and would therefore be equally useful for measuring subgroup differences within economic evaluation. We therefore recommend using the ESS within cost-effectiveness analysis as a complement to preference-based instruments in order to capture sleep-specific constructs not measured by the latter. Similar to the black subjectivity dilemmas discussed by W.E.B. Du Bois and Ralph Ellison in the US context, Afro-Latin Americans are caught between the paradoxical tensions of hyper-visibility and invisibility. In the imagined community narratives of Latin America, the presence of Afro-Latin Americans and their societal contributions are rendered invisible in the name of national unity. This article begins by exploring how the colonial imagined communities in the region erased Afro-Latinos. As Latin America achieved independence in the nineteenth century, color-blind nationalism functioned to differentiate Latin American identity from explicitly racialized North American identity. In contrast, Latin American Blacks have been hyper-visible subjects for North American social scientists for more than a century. Utilizing extensive archives of colonial documents, the Afro-Latin American subject emerged as a key research site to examine socio-cultural change. Over time, different disciplines took turns leading the debate, illuminating the significant Afro-Latino impact on national formations and cultural practices. These contradictory genealogies frame the diverse discussions gathered in this special issue on Afro-Latin America. The collection illuminates many of the themes, countries of focus, and theoretical approaches emerging in contemporary Afro-Latino studies. As a result, social scientists, including those represented here, are actively rewriting some of the foundational assumptions about the Afro-Latino subject. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This is first report on the composition of the leaf essential oils of J. communis L. varieties from the Western Hemisphere. The oil of Juniperus communis var. jackii had the most distinct oil and contained moderate amounts of α-pinene (16.1-18.9%), δ-3-carene (17.9-28.4%) and β-phellandrene (9.2-13.4%) along with several diterpenes including isoabienol. Juniperus communis var. charlottensis oil had a very high concentration of α-pinene (59.3%), with moderate amounts of β-pinene (5.9%), δ-3-carene (3.6%) and β-phellandrene (2.9%). The oil of J. communis var. depressa was dominated by a-pinene (53.9%), δ-3-carene (9.3%) and β-pinene (5.5%) and was a little unusual in also containing citronellol, citronellyl acetate, neryl acetate and geranyl acetate with no diterpenes. The oil of J. communis var. megistocarpa possessed large amounts of α-pinene (58.5%), limonene (20.4%) and β-pinene (5.0%) and, like J. communis var. depressa, its oil also contained citronellol, citronellyl acetate, neryl acetate and geranyl acetate. Putative J. communis var. saxatilis from Idaho, USA, had a high concentration of α-pinene (56.5%) with moderate amounts of δ-3-carene (11.5%), β-pinene (5.4%), myrcene (4.5%) and β-phellandrene (3.1%). The oils of these North American varieties were compared to J. communis var. communis (Sweden) and J. communis var. saxatilis (Switzerland). A survey of approximately 65 species of Juniperus revealed that isoabienol was present in eight species. X-ray, MS and 13C-NMR were used to determine the structure of isoabienol (I) and KI and a mass spectrum is presented to aid future identification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Volatile components from fresh and air-dried leaves of Juniperus thurifera var. africana, J. phoenicea and J. oxycedrus (Cupressaceae) were isolated by direct water distillation (Clevenger-type apparatus) and analyzed using GC (FID) and GC/MS. The essential oils from leaves of J. thurifera var. africana were characterized by a high sabinene content (16.5-21.8%), γ-terpinene (9.3-11.5%), and α-pinene (7.6-9.1%). The major components for J. phoenicea were α-pinene (38.2-58%) and δ-3-carene (7.6%), while 13-epi-manoyl oxide (12.5-13.2%), (Z)-6-pentadecen-2-one (11.5-12.2%), and α-pinene (8.5-17.1%) were the major components found in the leaf oils of J. oxycedrus. The fresh leaves of J. thurifera var. africana contained 1.46% oil, while the yield was 1.14% from the dried leaves. The oil yields from the dried leaves of J. phoenicea and J. oxycedrus were 0.94% and 0.01%, respectively. Air-drying moderately effected the qualitative and quantitative composition of the oils. Essential oils of Moroccan Juniperus thurifera var. africana from three provenances (Forêt Islane, Ait Lkak and Plateau of Matat) in the Tensift-Al Haouz, Marrakech region, were analyzed by combined capillary gas chromatography / mass spectrometry. The oil yields from fresh leaves showed on differences among geographical sources. Air dried leaves appeared to yield more oil at the highest elevation (1.03%, Ait Lkak, 2900 m) than lower sites (0.67%, Plateau of Matat, 2200 m; 0.57%, Forêt Islane, 2000 m). The essential oils from each geographic site had very similar composition in fresh versus air dried leaves. The essential oils from provenance Ait Lkak and Plateau of Matat were very similar and characterized by a high sabinene content (21.2, 35.9%), in contrast to 10.% sabinene from the provenance Forêt Islane. The oil from Foret Islane had a high d-cadinene content with 12.7%, whereas Aik Akak and Plateau of Matat contained only 0.6 and 0.8%. The Moroccan oils (J. thurifera var. africana) were compared to European J. thurifera var. thurifera (Spain) oil. Moroccan oils were found to be higher sabinene and limonene than the European oil. Re-examination of the leaf essential oils of the one-seeded, serrate leaf junipers of the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico, by GC, GC/MS and NMR, has yielded 2-ethenyl-3-methyl phenol (coahuilensol), 2-ethenyl-3-methyl anisole (coahuilensol, methyl ether), and 2-(1'-acetoxyethyl)-3-methyl anisole (pinchotene acetate) as new natural products. A survey of Juniperus oils revealed that these compounds were found in: three serrate leaf junipers (J. angosturana, two varieties of J. coahuilensis, and J. pinchotii). Coahuilensol was also found in the oils of two smooth leaf junipers of the western hemisphere (J. virginiana var. virginiana and J. v. var. silicicola); three multiple seeded, smooth leaf junipers of the eastern hemisphere (J. semiglobosa, J. semiglobosa var. talassica, and J. thurifera). The phenolic compounds were not found in section Juniperus, section Caryocedrus or in the one seeded, smooth leaf junipers of the eastern hemisphere. Coahuilensol has been previously reported as 2-(2-propenyl)-phenol (tentative). The leaf oils of J. angosturana J. coahuilensis, J. coahuilensis var. coahuilensis, J. monosperma and J. pinchotii were re-examined based on fresh oil collections and the compositions are reported. A new conifer genus was recently discovered in northern Vietnam and named Xanthocyparis with two species: X. vietnamensis in Vietnam and X. nootkatensis (= Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) in western North America. This is the first analysis of the leaf essential oil of X. vietnamensis. The oil of X. vietnamensis is dominated by sesquiterpenes and diterpenes. The major components are hedycaryol (1.4-34.4%), phyllocladene (0.9-37.8%), sandaracopimara-8 (14),15-diene (0.7-8.9%), germacrene D (3.7-7.9%), and α-pinene (0.8-14.9%). The oil of Xanthocyparis nootkatensis (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) is dominated by monoterpenes. The major constituents of X. nootkatensis are limonene (35.4-42.4%), δ-3-carene (11.5-23.4%), α-pinene (8.7-16.3%) and nezukol (3.3-4.8%). The oils differ in many components but share many of the unusual diterpenes. This seems to indicate a rather distant relationship and a long period of divergence. The oil samples of X. vietnamensis were extremely variable (e.g. hedycaryol 1.4-34.4%; phyllocladene 0.9-37.8%) suggesting chemical races or botanical varieties may be present. Farjon (1) considers the genus Calocedrus as containing just three species, C. decurrens (w. N. America), C. macrolepis (S.W. China, N. Vietnam, N. Thailand) and C. formosana (Taiwan). The leaf oils were analyzed and compared to the oil of the closely related species, Platycladus orientalis (E., N.E. China, Korea, far eastern Russia). The oils of C. macrolepis and C. formosana were very similar, being high in α-pinene (57.2% and 67.1%, respectively) and myrcene (11.2% and 6.2%), but they differed in several smaller components. The oils of C. decurrens from two populations in Oregon and one disjunct population in southern California were high in δ-3-carene (15.2-20.2%), limonene (18.2-23.6%), α-pinene (8.7-15.8%), terpinolene (5.7-8.0%), α-fenchyl acetate (3.5-9.7%), with some cedrol (0.8-1.2%). No large differences in oil compositions were seen between the three C. decurrens populations. Platycladus orientalis (= Thuja orientalis, = Biota orientalis) was found to contain considerable amounts of δ-3-carene (29.8%), cedrol (22.2%), α-pinene (15.1%) and terpinolene (4.9%). Overall, the oil of C. decurrens is as different from C. macrolepis and C. formosana as it is from P. orientalis, suggesting considerable divergence between Calocedrus species, but not between C. macrolepis and C. formosana. The composition of the leaf oils from seven populations of J. sabina L., one population of Juniperus sabina var. arenaria (E. H. Wilson) Farjon were examined for their geographic variation. In addition, the leaf oils of J. chinensis L. and J. davurica Pall. were compared to J. sabina. Juniperus sabina var. arenaria, the sand loving juniper, oil was found to be very similar to that of J. davurica, Mongolia, and J. sabina, on sand dunes in Mongolia. This suggests that J. sabina var. arenaria might be conspecific with J. davurica. Farjon's move (2001) of J. sabina var. arenaria out of J. chinensis is supported. Considerable differentiation was found in populations of J. sabina from the Iberian peninsula. Cedrol, citronellol, safrole, trans-sabinyl acetate, terpinen-4-ol and β-thujone were found to be polymorphic in several populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Use of controller asthma medication and possession of asthma action plans remains suboptimal. Our aim was to investigate the association of the propensity of physicians to involve patients in their care (participatory decision-making style) and their asthma management in a representative population sample of 3015 adults. Current doctor-diagnosed asthma was reported by 393 (13.0%). People who rated their doctors as more participatory were significantly more likely to report more regular use of controller medications and possession of a written asthma action plan, but not less asthma morbidity. Possession of a written action plan was associated with more participatory interactions (OR 2.3; 95% CI 1.1–4.7, for upper tertile scores compared to lowest tertile); more severe symptoms (OR 4.8; 95% CI 1.7–13.0), being female (OR 2.2; 95% CI 1.2–4.3), those with higher education, and residence outside the metropolitan area (OR 2.1; 95% CI 1.1–4.0). Increasing patient participation in their own care is associated with better asthma management, independent of asthma symptoms. For almost four centuries, African Americans in New York City have engaged in ethnic “dream-work,” shaping the city and being shaped by the city in return. The longstanding practice of racism forced a heterogeneous community of Blacks—originating in different parts of the country and the world, speaking many languages, and comprised of different economic classes— to coalesce as a community in order to challenge their subjugation. This article explores the issues, conditions, and experiences that frame the coalescence of the African American community in New York City during the twentieth century, highlighting how racial identities have been produced in the city. In the first part of this article, I reflect on the presence of Blacks in New York City to illuminate some of the common themes that have emerged from the African American experience in Gotham. Primary objective : Conduct an investigation of post-acute brain injury rehabilitation (PABIR) for persons with stroke. Research design : Pre-post-treatment observation study. Methods and procedures : Demographic and medical data for 127 persons with stroke admitted for PABIR at a median interval of 87 days post-stroke were abstracted from medical records. Participants' levels of independence and productivity were assessed at admission and discharge. Follow-up data were available for 90 participants at a median interval of 346 days post-discharge. Experimental interventions : Not applicable. Main outcomes and results : Participants showed improvements in productivity and independence level from admission to discharge and these gains were maintained at follow-up. Predictors of productivity at discharge were gender and level of independence at admission (Model R 2 = 0.28). Predictors of independence at discharge were similar (Model R 2 = 0.37). Conclusion : While this investigation has limitations, findings suggest that PABIR is beneficial for some persons with strokes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to determine whether differences in either prescribing or self-administration of morphine exist between Hispanic and White (Caucasian) post-operative patients treated with patient-controlled analgesia (PCA). A review of the medical records of 30 Hispanic and 30 White patients who received postoperative PCA was conducted. Both prescribed and self-administered morphine were analyzed using a two-sided, two-sample Student's t-test. No differences in the amount of morphine prescribed (11.23 ± 3.22 mg/hr in Hispanic patients, 11.05 ± 4.28 mg/hr in White patients; p = 0.8503) or self-administered (2.58 ± 2.02 mg/hr in Hispanic patients, 3.32 ± 3.00 mg/hr in White patients; p = 0.2711) were discovered. This study identified no statistically significant difference in either opioid prescribing or self-administration between Hispanic and White post-operative patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Twenty one accessions of vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash, sterile, oil type) and Khus (V. zizanioides, fertile, non-oil type) were analyzed by the use of random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs). Nineteen of the accessions clustered strongly around the cultigen, Sunshine. Three accessions, Khus, Northern India, Kassel, Germany, and Guang Dong, China clustered loosely and were not closely related to the sterile oil producing vetivers. Thirteen of the vetiver accessions were grown in test plots in Florida, USA, Nepal and Portugal. The largest growth was recorded in Nepal, followed closely by Florida and by the cooler, Mediterranean site in Portugal. No single genotype (DNA cultivar) grew best in every plot. Oil yields (% oil/dry wt.) were highest in Nepal and Portugal. Oil yields ranged from 0.29% to 9.61%. Essential oil production (g/plant) was highest in Nepal and Florida and ranged from 0.02 to 4.17 (g/plant). Analyses of variation among the major compounds is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study compares the quality of life of a community sample of people with asthma in South Australia, using population norms, people suffering from other chronic diseases, and a sample of asthma patients from two hospital clinics. A representative population survey was performed by trained interviewers in spring 1995 of 3001 respondents aged ≥15 years. A physician's diagnosis of current asthma was reported by 299 (9.9%). The hospital clinic sample had a physician's diagnosis and lung function evidence of asthma (n = 293). All completed the SF-36 health survey. Standardized SF-36 scores, adjusted for age, sex, and social class, were significantly lower for respondents with asthma, compared with population norms, across all subscales of the SF-36 (p < 0.05). Physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) scores were not significantly different in people in the community sample with asthma from scores in people with diabetes and arthritis. PCS and MCS scores did not differ for those with similar symptom frequency in the community and hospital asthma samples, except that hospital patients with frequent symptoms had significantly lower MCS scores (p < 0.01). Asthma has a major impact on the health-related quality of life in the community, comparable to other chronic diseases. The SF-36 performs uniformly in asthma in different situations. In this work the response of a rectangular, simply supported, symmetrically laminated, cross-ply composite plate subjected to a thermal shock is developed. The analysis includes the interaction between the strain and temperature fields and investigates the effect of accounting for the orthotropic material properties in the governing elastic and thermal equations. The resulting solution for the vibration of the plate is compared to a previous analysis of a homogeneous, isotropic, rectangular plate. Comparison indicates that while the solutions have similar forms, there are two key quantitative differences between them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on semiparametric approaches to stochastic panel frontiers with applications in the banking industry. The approaches used so far in the literature to study efficiency in the banking industry differ primarily by their method of disentangling inefficiency differences from random error, by their distributional assumptions, and by their functional-form assumptions. The stochastic frontier approach assumes that inefficiencies follow an asymmetric distribution and the random errors follow a symmetric distribution, and that both the inefficiencies and random errors are orthogonal to all of the regressors. The thick frontier approach assumes that deviations from predicted costs within a grouping of low-cost banks represent random error, whereas differences in predicted costs between high- and low-cost groups represent X inefficiencies. This article introduces new modeling and estimation method designed to help mitigate problems of endogeneity and misspecification. It uses an output distance function to model the technology of a multioutput firm. Furthermore, it introduces a new semiparametric method that makes minimal assumptions on the functional form of inputs in the distance function.

The article discusses the three levels of paradigm and program for the teaching of aesthetic dialogue to elementary students in the U.S. Aesthetic dialogue triggers an easy association of learning and structure to the other areas on the life of these students. It is argued that the focus on mere studio art experiences limits the possibility for a wider learning while dialogue on these experiences will support studio activities. These three levels include sensuousness and expression, description and analysis. Expression focuses on the forthright aesthetic responses to the content of an art object and then describing it in a formal and intellectual nature. Formal analysis is the highest level because it implies the significance and meaning as dependent on the other levels.

An answer to the question how to secure more time for the needs of proper Sunday school work, is the occasion for the setting forth of the plan of a two‐session‐a‐day Sunday school. It is not claimed that the plan Is in all cases feasible, or in some cases a desirable one. If the plan provokes discussion and in some cases will give guidance to earnest but perplexed Sunday school teachers and officers who see the need, but cannot see a way to secure the results herein set forth, the aim of the writer will be secured. Only one school in Colorado is known to me which approximately secures the results of a two‐session Sunday school. The essential oil of the rhizomes of Mongolian Rhodiola rosea L. was investigated by GC and GC/MS. Thirty-six constituents were identified in the oil. The main components in the oil were geraniol (32.3%), myrtenol (15.7%), octanol (13.7%), trans-pinocarveol (11.6%), trans-myrtanol (3.2%), isopinocamphone (2.8%) and piperitone (1.2%). Comparisons are made with Rhodiola rosea rhizome oil from Finland and Norway and oils from other Rhodiola species (R. crenulata, Tibet; R. fastigiata, Tibet; R. yunnanesis, China). The U.S. asphalt paving industry, which includes both the refining and hot mix sectors, has evolved over time to meet various performance specifications for asphalt (known as bitumen outside the United States). Additives to asphalt produced in the refinery, as well as changes in temperatures, equipment used, and materials added in the hot mix asphalt process - which are likely to vary by state - may affect exposures to workers in the asphalt paving industry. The purpose of this investigation was to document the changes in the refining, manufacturing, and hot mix of paving asphalt in the United States since World War II. The approach taken for the investigation of both the refining and hot mix sectors was similar. Historical documents, as available, were reviewed and individual experts in each industry sector were interviewed to identify current and historic practices. In general, of the refining facilities surveyed, the number reporting use of any material within a particular class ranged from none to more than half the respondents. Sixteen states were included in the review of the hot mix sector. All states reported addition of materials to hot mix asphalt currently or historically, but concentrations were generally small (less than 10% per unit weight of asphalt). Changes to paving asphalt in the United States over the past 50 years appear to have occurred, but are generally not consistent by geography or over time. Telemedicine can be used for education as well as clinical care. Wearable platforms now allow a remote student to "tele-present" cases to "Tele-Attending" elsewhere in real time. Most of the features that medical students rate as important can be accommodated in this paradigm. Augmenting the bedside case presentation with teaching material from on-line sources may even improve bedside rounds.
