Purpose of the Study: After two years of virtual meetings, the Barrels Meeting resumed to an in-person format on 10 and 11 November 2022 in La Jolla California. Materials and Methods: The meeting focused on the rodent sensorimotor system, with a focus on integrated information from the cellular to the systems level. A series of invited and selected oral presentations were delivered in addition to a poster session. Results: The latest results in the whisker-to-barrel pathway were discussed. Presentations included how the system encodes peripheral information, motor planning, and is disrupted in neurodevelopmental disorders. The 66th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Radiation Research Society took place in Tokyo, Japan, from 6 to 8 November 2023. The Annual Meeting of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) in 2023 marked a five-year milestone since the first Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) Symposium was held at AAG in 2018. In the past five years, progress has been made while open questions remain. In this context, we organized an AAG panel and invited five panellists to discuss the advances and limitations in GeoAI research. The panellists commended the successes, such as the development of spatially explicit models, the production of large-scale geographic datasets, and the use of GeoAI to address real-world problems. The panellists also shared their thoughts on limitations in current GeoAI research, which were considered as opportunities to engage theories in geography, enhance model explainability, quantify uncertainty, and improve model generalizability. This article summarizes the presentations from the panellists and also provides after-panel thoughts from the organizers. On July 27, 2023, the Coordinating Council of the Caucus for a Critical Political Science unanimously decided to honor a request from UNITE HERE Local 11 and striking hotel workers in Los Angeles, California. Critical Political Science cancelled all participation – events, meetings, and panels – at the 2023 American Political Science Association Annual Meeting & Exhibition, moved its events and meetings online using independent platforms, demanded APSA refund conference registration and hotel reservation fees, and contributed to the strike fund. This essay reconstructs those events from my perspective as Chair of the Caucus for a Critical Political Science and documents a critical juncture for American political scientists. The era of high-throughput techniques created big data in the medical field and research disciplines. Machine intelligence (MI) approaches can overcome critical limitations on how those large-scale data sets are processed, analyzed, and interpreted. The 67th Annual Meeting of the Radiation Research Society featured a symposium on MI approaches to highlight recent advancements in the radiation sciences and their clinical applications. This article summarizes three of those presentations regarding recent developments for metadata processing and ontological formalization, data mining for radiation outcomes in pediatric oncology, and imaging in lung cancer. This article summarizes a number of presentations from a session on "Radiation and Circulatory Effects" held during the Radiation Research Society Online 67th Annual Meeting, October 3–6 2021. Different epidemiological cohorts were analyzed with various statistical means common in epidemiology. The cohorts included the one from the U.S. Million Person Study and the Canadian Fluoroscopy Cohort Study. In addition, one of the contributions in our article relies on results from analyses of the Japanese atomic bomb survivors, Russian emergency and recovery workers and cohorts of nuclear workers. The Canadian Fluoroscopy Cohort Study data were analyzed with a larger series of linear and nonlinear dose-response models in addition to the linear no-threshold (LNT) model. The talks in this symposium showed that low/moderate acute doses at low/moderate dose rates can be associated with an increased risk of CVD, although some of the epidemiological results for occupational cohorts are equivocal. The usually only limited availability of information on well-known risk factors for circulatory disease (e.g. smoking, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, physical activity) is an important limiting factor that may bias any observed association between radiation exposure and detrimental health outcome, especially at low doses. Additional follow-up and careful dosimetric and outcome assessment are necessary and more epidemiological and experimental research is required. The article discusses the annual meeting of the DAPHNE4NFDI consortium, which focuses on "DAta from PHoton and Neutron Experiments" in the context of the German national science data infrastructure initiative NFDI. This article examines the evolving historiography of 'sport' vis-à-vis the British Society of Sports History (BSSH), as per fluid and shifting definitions of what the term 'sport' means. It begins by discussing broad themes within the previous historiography of UK sport. Afterwards, it roughly quantifies the content of articles the BSSH's journal The Sports Historian/Sport in History during the period 1993–2021, with an emphasis on sporting forms and emerging trends. Finally, the author provides a similar discussion of the topics of conference papers at annual meetings of the BSSH during the period 2011–21. Throughout this article, the author, Chair of the Society from 2017 to 2019, attempts to provide some causal explanations for why certain sporting forms are popular points of discussion, how others are pushing the envelope of the term 'sport', and issues therein. Can the ancestors speak? For the 2022 annual meeting of the Religious Education Association (REA), themed "Becoming Good Ancestors," an essential question is, "can the ancestors speak?" To answer this question, the presidential address seeks to uncover: who are the REA's ancestors? Where are they speaking? What is the guild's role in forming good ancestors? The address claims that not all ancestors can communicate their knowledge in the guild's current form, ways of gathering, or ways of forming scholars. B Don Stanley b walked off with the I Northern Region Mineral Interest Group (NRMIG) Photographic Trophy i for an excellent photograph of a doubtful specimen of natrolite on chabazite that had been collected by B Jan Price b at the Ram Rock quarry. Attendees arrive bearing huge boxes of trading material and stacks of photographs, but that's only the culmination of a year's work, for the AFM is active all year, organizing field trips, setting up displays at mineral shows, and caring for their collection in the École des Mines in Paris. In the contest for micromineral specimen, B Roger Vernay b took first with a specimen from the Puy d'Augoules quarry, Menet, featuring one prime crystal and a group of orange crystals impaled on white crystals that were probably apatite. The AFM followed that with the photo and micromineral contests on the theme of I Titanite. i The photo contest was won by B Pascale Journet b with a titanite from the Edembouches Ravine at Mont-Dore. In 2019, the Council of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) mandated the formation of the Climate Action Task Force, which is charged with reimagining the organization of the annual conference to fully acknowledge and actively address the scale of the contemporary climate crisis. In considering alternative conference models, this article argues that the AAG should avoid reaching for a simple, technical fix, such as maintaining a central conference location, with virtual participation added in. I argue here that the current high-emissions configuration of the AAG Annual Meeting reflects a confluence of processes, including the neoliberal internationalization of the academy. This form of internationalization, oriented toward those who can both afford and are permitted to gain entry to the United States, currently reproduces and deepens a politics of knowledge enclosure, in which ideas are most available to an elite transnational group of scholars. If the underlying cultural politics that promote hypermobility remain unchallenged, any shift in format might simply reproduce, even deepen, the process of knowledge enclosure. Thus, a strong reaffirmation of geography as a public good in practice and intent should serve as a guiding principle for change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 35th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Surgical Research took place in Clearwater Beach, Florida on 25–27 September 2019. This meeting brings together the experimental surgery community to share the latest in research and surgical techniques and fosters professional development through education, training, and certification. The Academy is made up of a diverse group of technicians, veterinarians, medical doctors, and biomedical researchers from industry, academia, and complimentary disciplines supporting discovery and translational research. Over 165 participants from 30 different states and 6 countries were in attendance for the scientific program and social events. Four keynotes were presented together with breakout and poster session tracks. Participants were able to work on applied skills in practical courses that included hands-on surgical technique wet-labs complimented with dry-lab suture technique and surgical anesthesia, plus workshops and roundtables focused on improving study design and publication best practices. Attendees were able to enjoy sun and fun while connecting with potential mentors and collaborators during the social program. We present the highlights from this meeting in this report together with selected abstracts that illustrate the diverse scientific expertise of the Academy and promising new surgical research. The symposium opened Saturday morning with Micromounters' Hall of Fame member B Roy Starkey's b talk, " I Very good value for a shilling" - F. W. Rudler and the Ludlam Collection i . In many ways, the year 2020 seemed like an airliner that taxied out to takeoff position, revved up its engines, roared down the runway, lifted off - and wound up as a smoking heap at the far end. The MMNE even managed to hold a small auction of lots of sixteen specimens from the collection of the late Micromounters' Hall of Fame member Janet Cares at each meeting. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and measures taken to mitigate its spread have presented numerous challenges for academia. Conferences are one challenge for academia in a COVID-19 environment. The present study discusses the purpose of academic conferences and provides a case study of a virtual conference in criminology and criminal justice (CCJ) that occurred in November 2020. We extracted data from the virtual conference program, from data publicly available through CrimCon, and from a sample of 53 of the 96 panels that occurred. Using these data, we present information about conference attendance and participation. We found that there were 558 unique presenters across 318 presentations and roundtable discussions, and a total of 1,629 unique attendees over the course of the three conference days. While virtual conferencing solves some problems, it presents unique others. Important comparisons between virtual conferencing and in-person conferencing are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay serves as an initial analysis of events relating to the protection of twentieth century cultural objects produced in Oran during the colonial period. It considers the role Law 98-04 played in establishing the legal framework of heritage protection in Algeria, and considers how the law was applied, especially since the 1990s when civil society associations began working toward using this law to protect Oran's architectural heritage. Looking through the prism of what is today known as 'national identity', the essay describes various cases in which built environments were either preserved or destroyed. A significant section of this essay is dedicated to the role that Oran's associations have played over the years in enhancing heritage consciousness. Particular attention is paid to the association Bel Horizon, created in 2001, whose organised walking tours through historical routes in Oran and whose training of local guides have led to annual meetings that gather together hundreds of Oran's residents. At the same time, the Algerian state has undertaken operations in support of heritage protection, the most important of which has been the rehabilitation of buildings in downtown Oran. This rehabilitation has allowed locals to rediscover their city through new means, and it has allowed the city to declare its candidacy to host the 2021 Mediterranean games. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the most highly attended dermatology conference in the United States, the AAD Meeting plays an especially critical role in the dissemination of dermatologic research. We sought to address the paucity of data regarding the fate of abstracts presented at AAD meetings to better understand the likelihood of publication after presentation as well as what factors may influence publication outcomes. We conducted a literature search for each abstract presented in 2015 and 2016 to determine publication outcomes inclusive of latency to publication and journals represented. We found that the majority of abstracts presented at AAD Meetings do not reach publication, with 44.7% and 43.5% reaching publication in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Abstracts are likely to be published within 1 year of presentation. Publication outcomes are stratified by abstract category and study design. There is considerable consistency in publication outcomes for abstracts presented at AAD Meetings for 2015 and 2016. Publication rates are comparable to other conferences in dermatology and other disciplines. These findings provide insight into the fate of the wealth of research presented at AAD meetings and what factors may influence an abstract being published. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

His talk, "Modelling Liquid Crystals and their Twisting" highlighted many of the new developments in this field. Prof. Gleeson's lecture "Out of the Box", highlighted the exciting developments and the latest applications of liquid crystal materials and provided an array of possible future directions aside from the normal LCD devices. The conference dinner was held at the conference venue after the poster sessions and after the dinner, Prof. Zannoni, together with Prof. Helen Gleeson and the conference organiser Prof. Susanne Klein (UWE) reviewed the development of the BLCS over recent years and presented a vision of the future for the younger generation of scientists. Within the mainstream discipline of criminology there has been a failure to recognize the value of the academic contributions of marginalized individuals in the field. This is manifested in the lack of people of color attending regional meetings which often have very traditional themes and focus. To rectify this situation, I suggest that creating meeting themes that highlight nontraditional theoretical perspectives will provide opportunities for marginalized academics to be highlight there work. My thesis is that creating conference themes that focus on attracting marginalized individuals to regional conferences will move the discipline forward in a robust manner that will embrace more voices that have traditionally been limited. In this introduction, we briefly frame the impetus behind this special issue focused on theorizations of power in diverse- and community-economies research. Catalyzed by a panel session at the 2017 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Geographers, this collection of essays reflects broader, ongoing discussions about how to grapple analytically and practically with power—in all of its forms—as a feature of economic formations. We outline here how each of the contributors to this issue, unsatisfied with a division of labor between theorists concerned with power's constraining force and those focused on its enabling or generative force, offers new paths for critique that neither reify existing power relations nor turn away from them. Mastocytosis are a group of hematologic neoplasms characterized by an accumulation of atypical mast cells in one or several organs/tissues, often accompanied by mast cell activation. Whereas in children the disease manifestations are mostly limited to the skin, in adults the disease is usually systemic (systemic mastocytosis; SM) and involves the bone marrow and/or other internal organs. Several variants of SM have been defined. Whereas most patients have indolent SM, some patients have advanced SM, which underlines the complexity of SM. In 2002, a European consortium of clinicians and scientists initiated a multidisciplinary, multi-national cooperative network, termed the 'European Competence Network on Mastocytosis' (ECNM), with the aim to improve diagnosis and therapy of patients with mastocytosis and other mast cell activation disorders. Since then, members of the ECNM have organized Annual Meetings in several European countries. The 34th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Surgical Research was held from September 26–28, 2018 in Charleston, South Carolina. The Academy's community joins together at the annual meeting to promote and advance professional and academic standards, education, and research related to the art and science of experimental surgery. Over 150 participants from 26 different states and 4 countries attended and reflected the diverse membership of technicians, veterinarians, medical doctors, and biomedical researchers and broad network between industry and academia. Twitter has emerged as a global social network of active users who share conversations with one another in an online setting. Academics are one community that has increasingly taken to Twitter as a means of connecting with other scholars, sharing research, and obtaining meaningful feedback. Tweeting has become especially popular during academic conferences where conference attendees use Twitter hashtags to filter conference conversations into a separate dialogue. For geographers, the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) represents one such occasion to use Twitter to discuss contemporary developments in geographic research. In this article, we provide an overview of Twitter as well as the ways in which the academic community uses the platform. Following this, we discuss the tweets sent using the hashtag for the 2018 AAG Annual Meeting, #AAG2018. To analyze these tweets, we collected all tweets with this hashtag for a period of four weeks and examined the content using word clouds and sentiment analysis to explore general feelings and trends associated with geography and the AAG Annual Meeting. We conclude with suggestions for future research avenues that could use Twitter data to gauge the pulse of the geographic discipline. The Technical Committee (TC) held its 89th meeting, led by Chair Daia Zwicky, with well-represented members of Commissions, Editorial Boards and Award Committees as well as TC Core Members. Introduction: Today, there is a global consensus that adjuvant treatment is mandatory for stage II and III gastric cancer. What remains controversial, however, is what constitutes the best adjuvant therapy. A comprehensive review including published papers, doi documents, and abstracts from the ASCO annual meeting was undertaken to develop this updated review.Areas covered: Adjuvant treatments for stage II or more advanced and potentially curable gastric and gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinoma are, exclusively, reviewed and discussed.Expert opinion: The role of radiation is not yet established for gastric and GEJ cancers. Postoperative chemoradiotherapy offers no survival advantage over chemotherapy alone for patients who undergo D2 surgery. It is not yet clear if neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy is better than adjuvant chemotherapy. Individualized treatment plans should be determined for many patients as efficacy depends on tumor histology, and toxicity varies enormously among effective options. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
