This article focuses on the level of international scientific publication by Kazakhstani researchers, and considers the problem of access to international scientific resources in Kazakhstan, a developing country. Key areas of the discussion are Kazakhstan's strategic plans and policies regarding science, roles of international publishers in science, and the relationship between international publishers and the government of Kazakhstan. The article bears the informative meaning and has no research and findings. However, this is a good start point for the author and other Kazakhstani library and information professionals to study the subject more deeply and propose solutions for the good of all. The Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Library Alliance conducted a study to assess library services in support of faculty research. Funded by an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant, and with support from LYRASIS, the study involved two different assessments. The first assessment was of faculty members and their support needs for research. The second assessment was of librarians to understand current capacity and needs related to support libraries provide to faculty. While the HBCU Library Alliance acknowledges that libraries do not have the capacity to address all the challenges to faculty research, the results from this study can serve as a tool to augment the academic infrastructure to support research. A well-crafted localized survey is an excellent opportunity to efficiently collect data about library user feelings and experiences on a large scale. 800 undergraduate students and employees of a mid-sized public university responded to an online survey about their feelings on library space, communication, services, and collections. Employing a variety of question types, the authors sought to include measures that would yield both pertinent and meaningful feedback. Results were analyzed and prioritized by significance and librarians culled the results for actionable findings and opportunities for further study or long-term benchmarking. This paper reports the results of recent research examining the holdings of Australian research library collections recorded in the WorldCat database using OCLC WorldCat Collection Analysis software. The objectives of the research are: 1. To better understand the distribution of printed monographs amongst Australian research collections in order to assess the potential for enhanced collaboration in aspects of collection management. 2. To test the OCLC WorldCat Collection Analysis software in order to ascertain its value in comparing collection data based on the Australian research libraries subset of the WorldCat database. The collections compared are the National Library of Australia; University of Melbourne; Monash University, and CAVAL Archival and Research Materials Centre. The data record the extent of overlap between collections, and the prevalence and distribution of single copies. The paper refects on the use of WorldCat Collection Analysis software as a means of supporting the future management of Australian research collections. Because of efforts such as large-scale book digitization projects, research libraries will increasingly be distinguished by their special and unique collections. In this paper, the authors analyze three software solutions that enable Encoded Archival Description finding aid documents and digital objects (derived from photographs, manuscripts, and other special collection items) to be published online. While several significant market and technological challenges exist, there are available solutions, both commercial and open-source, that enable libraries to publish selected digital collections and items online. Following the release of ENDF/B-VII.O evaluations, an ACE-formatted continuous-energy neutron data library called ENDF70 for MCNP has been produced at Los Alamos National Laboratory. This new library contains data for 387 isotopes and three elements at five temperatures: 293.6, 600, 900, 1200, and 2500 K. It can be obtained as part of the MCNP5 1.50 release. The new library was created using ENDF/B-VII.O neutron evaluations and primarily version 248 of N JOY99. A processing script was created that set up the input files for N JOY and employed checking codes to test the content of the processed data. A sample MCNP run was performed for each isotope and temperature, and cross sections for each isotope were plotted to make sure there were no major energy-balance problems. The processed ACE libraries did not always pass all quality assurance tests. For example, energy-balance problems were identified for several evaluations having negative heating numbers or inconsistencies between total and partial heating. Similarly, some problems were found with unresolved resonance probability tables, resulting in probability tables being excluded from the final library for several materials. Certain evaluations were modified and reprocessed as a result of the quality assurance tests, and some data points in the final ACE files were changed because they were too small or had other problems. The new ENDF70 library provides MCNP users with the latest ENDF/B data available. This collection of data includes a larger range of isotopes and temperatures than previously released, which will be beneficial in numerous applications. In this article the author discusses shortening reference collections in libraries. Several opportunities and choices are available through trimming collections according to the author. Discussed are how several librarians met the demand for various collections through the reallocation of space at their library. A library reference department's usefulness can be made better through the creation of digital repositories of unique or hard-to-find information. The author also believes that library employees can schedule activities that build connections between the library and the community.

The article presents a paper that evaluates and researches the role that libraries play as a source of mediated search services and skill-building teachers for medical literature. In the early 1990s, numerous academic libraries adopted the web as a communication tool with users. The literature on academic library websites includes research on both design and navigation. Early studies typically focused on design characteristics, since websites initially merely provided information on the services and collections available in the university's physical library. Beginning in the late 1990s, technological developments coupled with new digitization efforts offered new opportunities for websites with commercial and local databases, electronic journals, e-books, and virtual reference. The availability of new content and services on library websites facilitated research efforts comparing these features among academic library websites. During this period, articles also emerged that considered navigation and usability issues for these pages. The literature on academic library web pages documents efforts by libraries to use web technologies and resources to serve user groups. However, the research also suggests these efforts were hindered by design and navigation issues with academic library web pages. This study analyzes the citations included in forestry master's theses at Mississippi State University from 1999 to 2003 in order to increase librarians' understanding of the sources used by forestry researchers. The results, which are compared with related citation studies, demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of the field as well as the variety of sources used in forestry research. Forestry graduate students cited journal articles, books, theses and dissertations, conference proceedings, government and university publications, association and company reports, and miscellaneous other resources. Knowledge of these various sources can strengthen the services provided by librarians who assist forestry researchers through reference services, library instruction, and collection management. Presents an introduction to the April 2005 issue of the journal "The Acquisitions Librarian."

This article identifies a common problem in many academic libraries: users having difficulties finding library items. It suggests that a mapping system may help solve the problem if the difficulties stem from users who do not understand floor structures of the library or classification of the collections. The technology of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is proposed to build the system because of its ability to analyze spatial data of collection locations and dynamically present the analytical results in maps of varied detail. Such a GIS item-locating system could he integrated into current online catalog systems so that users would have search results in both textual display and visual demonstration. The article presents information on the Humanities and Social Sciences Library of University of Alberta. The library is situated at I-01 Rutherford Library, Edmonton, Alberta. Primary users of the library have free access to the collection. While consortial partners and external users have access via interlibrary loan. Free on-site access is available to any user. The library's collection focuses on the areas of humanities and social sciences. There are a number of unique archival collections preserved at the University of Alberta, housed at the University of Alberta Archives and at the Canadian institute of Ukrainian Studies. The strengths of the collection in humanities include literature (primary and secondary works), philology, language teaching and learning, applied linguistics, cultural studies, popular media, and folklore.

This article focuses on the Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York. Syracuse University provides library services to meet the instructional and research needs of its students, faculty, and staff; to fulfill regional and national commitments to resource sharing; and, as resources permit, to meet the research needs of alumni and the Syracuse community. Visitors are welcome to use the Library's collections for research and study purposes. These materials include collections housed in Library stacks; government documents; reference collections; current periodicals and newspapers, except those held on reserve; and microform collections. Unless they are registered as guest borrowers, visitors may use Library resources only in-house. Depository collections of the U.S. government publications, and help in using them, are freely available to all visitors. With the exception of these depository collections, the Library may at times give priority in service to University-affiliated users, and may limit visitors' access to selected facilities, collections, and services.

An overview and analysis of the Journal Citation Reports' impact factor is provided here. The historical development, calculation of, and alternatives to impact factor are briefly described. Nine general uses of impact factor, including library collection management decisions, journal rankings, journal decision models, and full-text database evaluation, are discussed. Ten benefits, such as its well-established authority, are listed. Finally, more than a dozen criticisms of citation data in general (e.g., self-citations are counted) and impact factor specifically (e.g., problems with the formula for its calculation) are analyzed. The author concludes that impact factor, if used appropriately and in combination with other criteria, is a valid tool that can assist journal collection management decisions in research libraries. As libraries continue to acquire, catalog, and preserve pa- per-based collections, and the early promise of digital technologies to put everything online has not yet been fully realized, the need to physically retain little used analog collections has intensified. Thus a growing trend in the field of academic and public libraries is an increased awareness of the importance of remote storage facilities (RSF). A recent American Library Association meeting featured speakers who were involved with such a facility. The speakers offered tips and hints on surviving and even thriving in one successfully. The authors of this article hope that by documenting the highlights of these presentations, other librarians and staff in the planning, construction, or implementation phase of a RSF will be better prepared for the challenges and difficulties they will face when trying to provide access to and physically maintain a collection geographically distant from their main library. Howard D. White's Brief Tests of Collection Strength presents a method for evaluating library collections. His method, based on comparing short lists of items (brief tests) to a library's holdings, comes out of conspectus work of the 1980s but is much more straightforward. White provides evidence and research supporting the integrity of his approach. This article presents an analysis of the feasibility of a bookless library in a research setting. As spaces for collections are being converted for increased study and community spaces, many libraries have been moving low-use collections to off-site storage. Issues regarding the types of storage spaces available are addressed. Concerns and solutions addressed include electronic availability, virtual browsing, and efficient interlibrary loan services. The article concludes that although moving all materials off site could be adequate for research needs on a short-term basis, the permanent removal of all materials would be undesirable due to a loss of discovery by browsing. This article examines patterns of gender relations in Ankara in the early 1950s. Based in part on the unpublished memoirs of Kemal Tanyolaç, who provided extensive details of his bachelor years in Ankara, this article explores a wide variety of relationships between men and women, from traditional marriage-oriented matchmaking and modern dating, through business relationships as work colleagues or landlord and tenant, to different types of illicit sexual relations. We look at changes in how men and women viewed each other and their relationships, and what effects that had on the ongoing social changes of the time. We argue that all types of relationships and the possibilities they entailed, including prostitution, need to be understood in complex, nuanced ways in order to understand the society that was emerging in post-Second World War urban Turkey. The life of Father Jean Xavier Hyacinthe Montrouzier (1820–1897) is briefly reviewed, with special reference to the 5 years he spent on Woodlark Island (Muyua), Papua New Guinea, and his subsequent academic studies while briefly resident in Australia. Of the four species listed by Montrouzier as members of the genus Euploea in his 1856 paper on the Lepidoptera of Woodlark, two do undoubtedly belong to the genus as currently recognised: Euploea leucostictos and E. boisduvalii (Danaini: subtribe Euploeina). A third species, originally described by Macleay as a species of Euploea but now included in the genus Tirumala (Danaini, Danaina), was correctly identified by Montrouzier. The fourth, for which Montrouzier introduced a new species name, appears to represent either a species of Neptis (Limenitidinae) or Tellervo (Danainae, Tellervini). The rise of streaming services and decline of analog media have affected academic music libraries in their traditional role as a resource of listening materials. This study examines the listening-source preferences of college-level music students across multiple institutions through a survey in which students compared electronic commercial streaming services and both electronic and analog library multimedia collections to determine the factors that lead to the use of one source over the other. Findings indicate a strong preference for commercial streaming services over library materials, emphasizing the importance of convenience. In 1997, Stephen Batchelor published his ideas about a new form of Buddhism free of religion in the book Buddhism Without Beliefs. This concept of Buddhism would later be known as Secular Buddhism. The Lily, a temperance and woman's rights publication started by Amelia Bloomer in 1849, was among the first periodicals published by and for women in the US. This study argues that Bloomer's editorship of the Lily from 1849–1854 advanced the cause of woman's rights in the US through discourse, dialogue, and practice. The issues addressed in the Lily—marital relations, political representation, property ownership, education and work opportunities, fair wages, fashion customs, women's health, religion, and gendered social norms—reflected a broad-based agenda for feminism that is familiar today. At the same time, the journal's privileging of middle-class white womanhood exposed fissures and blind spots related to race and class that would reverberate for generations. Historically, the library Reserve collections provide access to required readings so students could read these materials in one place for a limited time. This system guarantees the availability of required readings whenever the library is open and contributes to the concept of accessibility, affordability, and equality of higher education. But what happens if the library space becomes inaccessible? What alternatives can be offered when even e-versions of required readings are non-existent? One of the major concerns for the imminent remote operability of the Lloyd G.Sealy library during COVID-19 lockdown was Reserves. When the John Jay College campus was shut down, the virtual 24/7 library operation became a reality. The reference services continued to function via email and chat and the questions about access to the physical Reserve collection and demand for those resources to be available in e-format began to form an avalanche. The author surveyed the teaching faculty about the use of the library's Reserve collections during the remote teaching mode and analyzed data to assess the functionality of the Reserves in order to help the library make preparations for the Fall 2021 semester as well as envision the post-pandemic future for the Reserve collections. This article examines the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) diplomatic relations with China, and its search for greater autonomy through financial and political independence as its current Compact of Free Association with the United States comes up for review in 2023. The article draws on diplomatic histories overlooked in existing analyses of regional diplomacy in which Micronesians explore alternative options for how to best advance their collective future interests. These Micronesian narratives demonstrate that external powers and aid donors should not take their influence for granted, nor necessarily correlate their largesse with local respect. The priorities of Pacific nations are increasingly focused on mitigating the existential threat of climate change to their environments. Avoidable environmental damage to a reef in Pohnpei by the Chinese fishing vessel Ping Da 7 in late 2013 and subsequent refusals to remove the grounded vessel and clean up the damage provide just one example of the FSM having to review their external relations in response to differences between donors' promises and their practice. To maintain healthy relations with the FSM, this article argues that China and the United States need to respect and support the FSM as a sovereign nation with many compatible interests, but also occasional divergences in national priorities. The libraries at top private and public research universities in the United States hold some of the most comprehensive collections in the world for studying other regions and their modern histories. Yet how this came to be has been largely overlooked. This article unearths the history of the Public Law 480 Program, also known as Food For Peace or PL-480, and how it came to support the large-scale acquisition of Arabic books through a center opened for this purpose in Cairo, Egypt. The article explores the changes in US food exports, specifically wheat, and links these changes to PL-480, US foreign policy, and finally Arabic book acquisitions for US research libraries. By drawing on a variety of publicly available primary sources, as well as a series of interviews with the current and former directors of the Cairo acquisitions center, this article lays out the history of this unorthodox program and its outsized impact on area studies programs in the United States, with a specific focus on Middle East Studies. This study explores the necessity of developing disaster risk reduction plans and increasing the level of preparedness for disasters for academic libraries in Sri Lanka. It examines some of the different types of disasters; natural, man-made, and hybrid, which can occur in university libraries. Informants were the librarians of all 15 Sri Lankan state universities. The methodology is mixed-method with data gathered through questionnaires and interviews. In this study, the researcher considered the likelihood of occurrence of various types of disaster and their potential impact on university libraries. The results reveal that fire is the most expected disaster. Results highlight the importance of disaster risk reduction plans for university libraries and emphasise that every library should adopt a plan to safeguard its legacy. This study was conducted in 2019, thus infectious diseases were identified as an 'unlikely to occur' disaster category. Women musicians were virtually ignored in the literature of Western music until their recent inclusion in standard reference sources and other publications. However, making these works available to the researcher becomes a challenge for library collection development departments, especially for small libraries unaffiliated with music schools that have only a modest music collection and budget. This paper offers guidance in developing a small collection of books on women in music that will complement the current collection and provide amore accuratehistory of Western music. This article describes the process of transforming the Arkansas Periodical Index, which began as a card file index in the University of Arkansas (U. of A.) Libraries, to an online database. As in many other states, in-house indexes were compiled to cover local history journals and subject-related magazines. A variety of software now exists to mount locally created databases, one option being the choice to use the same turnkey software that runs the library's online catalog. We began by converting our card files to a local Inmagic DB/Textworks database. The U. of A. received the 1991 Gale Research Award for Excellence in Reference and Adult Library Services for that design. We later mapped the database structure to MARC fields and mounted it as a Web-accessible database through our library OPAC vendor, Innovative Interfaces, Inc. (III). The authors begin with a brief history of periodical indexing, the reasons for choosing MARC formatting, and the field mapping required. The article explains the development of the database to include other publication formats, such as material from biographical compendiums, newspaper indexing, and university publications. The mapping incorporates indexing several publication formats in the same database. It also provides fields for linking citations back to the OPAC records, where users may find call numbers for journals or books, be connected to the full text of articles when available, or to an association's own website when applicable. We address some of the concerns for libraries in developing indexing projects. The article offers a mapping table of migrated fields that can be used by others wanting to encourage the rediscovery of local print periodicals and to expand access to the various materials otherwise buried in the library's special collections. Two academic programs had been approved for creation at a four-year public university. Shortly after embarking on a collection and resource review process, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Due to the pandemic, many libraries and academic departments were asked to reduce their overall expenditures. New methods had to be utilized to enhance funding-focused conversations. The use of benchmarking was implemented to identify discipline-specific sources and influence budgetary approval. The benchmarking materials that were generated facilitated communication within the library, the emerging academic programs, and university-level administration. The use of these reports resulted in positive results in this specific case and ultimately led to the acquisition of a large portion of the requested resources. In this article, I analyse documents from the Pedagogical Museum of Paris, particularly the writings of Ferdinand Buisson (1878–1879), in which the author addresses not only the French experience but others too. This analysis allowed me to outline a network of transnational sociability composed by intellectuals, pedagogues, and people from public instruction who were concerned with the creation and consolidation of national pedagogical museums. The clues on the French Museum project allowed us to observe circulations, inspirations, appropriations, and exchanges in relation to models implemented in several countries. It also allowed for the insertion of national pedagogical museums, emerging in the second half of the nineteenth century as part of an international movement; subjects from different nations promoted the circulation, appropriation, and exchange of ideas and practices to achieve a scientific education, advocated transnational comparative studies, and created pedagogical museums as strategic tools for achieving this goal. This article addresses the emergence of children and young people as simultaneously sexual/gender non-normative and political subjects during the 2016 Safe Schools controversy. What appeared as a striking departure from previous controversies around non-normative sexuality was the appearance of young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning (LGBTQ) people speaking for themselves as political subjects. We are particularly interested in the young transgender subject and the political registers through which these and other young people represented themselves and made claims on citizenship. While they might be historically new political subjects, their vocabulary of harm, vulnerability and safety, and frequent recourse to health discourse, had a somewhat longer history. Who deserves credit for the map of detailed soundings taken in the James River in the summer of 1617, the foundation for all subsequent navigation in Virginia for the next half century? This essay proposes that the chartmaker is not a pirate, as previously suggested, but one Marmaduke Raynor, a trained and experienced seaman who might have been commissioned by the Virginia Company of London as part of a new initiative. The original map is no longer extant, but was copied, perhaps surreptitiously, and then used by the famous Dutch mapmakers of the Vingboons family for their chart of the 'Powhatan River' of 1639. Not all academic librarians who oversee children's collections for pre-service teachers have backgrounds in K-12 education. To develop a robust collection, the St. Cloud State University library reached out to an assistant professor in the Department of Teacher Development to help weed their children's literature collection and recommend new titles because of their dual expertise with both libraries and schools. Traditional literature (including folk tales, fairy tales, and fables) is valued in academic children's literature collections for its value in both direct use (real or hypothetical) with children and the historical, cultural, and anthropological study of folklore. The "timeless" feel of these works, along with their distinctively liminal place between fiction and nonfiction, can lead them to be perceived as indefinitely useful, even beyond their unusually long standard retention period. Nevertheless, in a non-archival academic children's literature collection, routine assessment of traditional literature is necessary and even valuable. This article situates traditional literature in the context of children's literature and its academic study, then describes how the children's folklore collection in one academic library was bifurcated to improve access, browsing ability, context, and use of shelf space. Academic libraries serving education students have an obligation to provide exceptional offerings of current, decolonized, diverse, and inclusive children's literature, while also providing examples of historical juvenile writings to critique and compare. The first step is to update the juvenile collection policy to reflect decolonized changes by determining guidelines and parameters for which books stay in a collection, which will be removed, and which books will be moved to a "historical texts" collection. Though many library practices and services were put on hold at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, hiring still took place in some academic libraries. This column details the process of remote onboarding in an academic library that was accustomed to in-person hiring and training, and it provides perspective from both the supervisor and the newly-hired electronic resources librarian in the UNC Greensboro University Libraries Technical Services Department. Among the multitudes lured to Australia's shores in the 1850s by the glitter of gold were entrepreneurial musicians who hoped to attract audiences eager for entertainment and culture. The tours of nineteenth-century virtuoso musicians around Europe and the Americas are well-researched, but less so touring musicians to the Antipodean gold rush. While the 1850s gold rush had profound impacts on social, economic and political life in Australia, the impact of gold upon cultural life warrants more attention. Newspapers of the time record many visiting musicians who hoped to profit from the backwash of rivers of gold. This article opens a window onto this world by studying the concert tours around Australia from 1854 to 1858 of Miska Hauser. A European classical musician with elite violin school training, he is notable as the first world-class violinist to tour the Australian colonies. This study draws upon the digital records of colonial newspapers available online from the National Library of Australia. This article analyses the populist concert programmes that Hauser presented to diverse audiences during his indefatigable tours around Australia and explores the extent of his professional and financial success. This paper presents the analysis of over 4,000 chat questions from 2019-2020. Each chat question was individually categorized into broad level topics, and analyzed using sentiment analysis. During the COVID pandemic, there was an increase in the number of questions about accessing the physical collection, and a large decrease in questions about using the library space. The overall sentiments of the chat questions were much more negative during COVID. Tagging and analyzing chat questions in this way can offer unique insights for all types of libraries to appropriately staff the service and best support patron needs in times of crisis.
