Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) reduces the quality of life of young women and negatively affects their mental health and productivity. Regular physical activity and lifestyle changes are effective in alleviating and eliminating PMS symptoms. Accordingly, this randomized controlled study aims to investigate the effect of pilates and a WhatsApp-based support program on reducing PMS symptoms. A support program including pilates exercises and sending text messages was applied for 8 weeks to the students in the intervention group, and no attempt was made to the students in the control group. To develop a nuanced understanding of women's health on social media, we conducted a content analysis of Twitter data in early 2020, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Included tweets (N = 1,714) fell into 15 overarching themes. "Politics and Women's Health" was most discussed, demonstrating the politicization of women's health, followed by "Maternal, Reproductive, and Sexual Health." COVID-19 was a crosscutting issue for 12 themes, suggesting widespread effects on women's health. Overall, diverse conversations unfolded on social media, including variation geographically, highlighting the need for a more expansive and inclusive definition of women's health. Behavioral interventions are effective for smoking cessation; however, little is known about the underlying mechanisms of treatment outcomes. Self-efficacy and motivation to quit are two central mediators of therapy success, however, their interaction during tobacco cessation remains unclear. The aims of this study were to analyze the effectiveness of Guided Self-Change (GSC) therapy for smoking cessation and to examine parallel and serial mediation between self-efficacy and motivation during therapy. We conducted a one-group pretest-posttest design with the participation of 145 treatment-seeking smokers (age = 55.8 ± 10.3 years; 59.3% women) from the General University Hospital of Alicante. We assessed participants' daily tobacco use, self-efficacy, and motivation to quit at baseline and at the end of treatment. Descriptive, bivariate, and mediation analyses were performed. A total of 49% (n = 71) of participants completed GSC therapy (3–5 sessions), of which 52.1% (n = 37) stopped using tobacco after treatment (McNemar's p < 0.001; θ = 5.85). Mediation analyses showed GSC therapy significantly increased (p < 0.01) both self-efficacy (a1=1.19; 95%CI = 0.47, 1.91) and motivation (a2=1.95; 95%CI = 1.34, 2.56). However, only the serial path from self-efficacy to motivation to quit showed significant indirect effects in tobacco reduction (a1a3b2=–0.29; 95%CI=–1.1, 0.03; Z=–4.36; p < 0.001). GSC therapy demonstrated effectiveness in quitting smoking by partially increasing self-efficacy, which in turn enhanced motivation to quit leading to a reduction of use. Cervical cancer (CC) is a common gynecological malignancy, and improving cisplatin sensitivity has become a hot topic in CC chemotherapy research. Polyphyllin I (PPI), a potent bioactive compound found in Rhizoma Paridis, known for its anticancer properties, remains underexplored in CC resistance. In this study, we evaluated PPI's impact on cisplatin-resistant CC cells and elucidated its underlying mechanism. Our findings reveal that PPI enhances the sensitivity of cisplatin-resistant CC cells to the drug, promotes apoptosis, and inhibits cell migration. Mechanistically, PPI was found to regulate p53 expression and its target genes, and suppressing p53 expression reverses PPI's sensitizing effect in drug-resistant CC cells. In conclusion, PPI showed promise in sensitizing cisplatin-resistant human CC cells to cisplatin treatment, suggesting that it could serve as a potent adjunct therapy for cervical cancer, particularly for cases that have developed resistance to cisplatin, thereby providing a promising basis for further clinical investigation into PPI for enhancing the efficacy of existing chemotherapy regimens in resistant cervical cancer. Two new triterpene fatty acid esters, 3β-palmityloxy-12,27-cyclofriedoolean-14-en-11α-ol (1) and 3β-palmityloxy-19α-hydroxyursane (2), together with 3β-hydroxy-11-oxo-olean-12-enyl palmitate (3) were isolated from the potent anti-inflammatory active fraction of the petroleum ether-soluble part of Cirsium setosum ethanol extract. Compound 1 was found to be a rare 12,27-cyclopropane triterpenoid. Their structures were determined through spectral data analysis combined with literature reports. In mixed traffic condition, varying vehicle dimensions and lack of lane discipline lead to parallel movement of vehicles in the same lane or between lanes. This results in a condition where the longitudinal response of vehicles gets affected by adjacent vehicles and their configurations. Correspondingly, the adjacent vehicle configurations are significantly influenced by the lane position of subject vehicle. To accommodate this scenario, the study formulates longitudinal acceleration models from trajectory data considering the influence of subject vehicle's lane position along with adjacent vehicle characteristics. The response under different cases of subject vehicle's lane position and adjacent vehicle configurations are evaluated. The statistical analysis indicates that the following behavior varies based on lane position of subject vehicle and adjacent vehicle attributes. It is also found that disregarding these attributes can produce significantly erroneous acceleration estimates. These features can improve existing following behavior models and can enhance the realism of the microscopic modeling scheme for mixed traffic conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To examine physical therapist awareness and utilization of imaging referral privileges in the United States (US) and how it relates to direct access frequency. Methods: This study utilized survey data collected in 2020–2021 from US physical therapists. Subjects were asked about imaging referral jurisdictional authority in their state. Responses were analyzed for accuracy and compared to the level of jurisdictional authority and its impact on imaging referral. Analysis of imaging skills performance and imaging referral practices were compared to direct access frequency. Results: Only 42.0% of physical therapists practicing in states that allow imaging referral were aware of this privilege. Those practicing where imaging referral was allowed via state legislation were significantly more likely (p < 0.01) to be aware of this privilege (71.4%) compared to those granted by the state board (25.2%). Those aware of their imaging referral scope were more likely (p < 0.01) to practice imaging referral (44.5%) compared to those who were unaware (3.2%). Direct access frequency was positively associated with imaging skill performance and imaging referral practice (p < 0.01). Doctors of Physical Therapy, residency/fellowship-trained physical therapists, and board-certified physical therapists all reported practicing greater frequency of direct access (p < 0.01). Discussion/Conclusion: There is a striking lack of awareness of imaging privileges among physical therapists as influenced by the level of jurisdictional scope. These results suggest that the lack of awareness may have a dampening effect on diagnostic imaging referrals. Objectives: Irritability is a foundational clinical reasoning concept in rehabilitation to evaluate reactivity of the examination and treatment. While originally theorized to reflect tissue damage, a large body of evidence supports pain is a biopsychosocial experience impacted by pain sensitivity and psychological factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine biopsychosocial contributors to irritability. Methods: 40 patients with shoulder (n = 20) and low back (n = 20) pain underwent Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) (Pressure Pain Threshold, Heat Pain Threshold, Conditioned Pain Modulation, Temporal Summation), completed pain-related psychological questionnaires, an Exercise-Induced Hypoalgesia protocol, and standardized irritability assessment based on Clinical Practice Guidelines. Participants were then categorized as irritable or not irritable based on Maitland's criteria and by irritability level based on Clinical Practice Guidelines. An independent samples t-test examined for differences in QST and psychological factors by irritability category. A MANOVA examined for differences in QST and psychological factors by irritability level (high, moderate, low). Results: Significantly lower heat and pressure pain thresholds at multiple locations (p < 0.05), as well as less efficient conditioned pain modulation (p = 0.02), were demonstrated in individuals categorized as irritable. Heat and pressure pain thresholds were also significantly lower in patients with high irritability compared to other levels. Significantly higher depression and anger, as well as lower self-efficacy, were reported in individuals with an irritable presentation. Objectives: Current literature remains inconclusive regarding the best methodology to accurately palpate lumbar spinous processes (SP). Body painting (BP) uses markers to draw anatomical structures on the skin's surface. While BP can be a useful tool for engaging learners, it is unknown whether it improves palpation accuracy. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the addition of body painting to palpation education improves lumbar spinous process palpation accuracy in first-year Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students. Methods: Thirty-eight DPT students were randomized into a traditional palpation group and a body painting (BP) group. Each group received identical instruction on palpating the lumbar spine, with the BP group additionally drawing lumbar SPs on their laboratory partner with a marker. Students were then assessed on their ability to accurately palpate the L4 SP on randomly assigned subjects. Two Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) used ultrasound imaging to confirm the location of each student's palpation. Palpation time was also recorded. The BP group also completed a survey on the learning experience. Results: Forty-five percent of students were able to accurately palpate the L4 SP. There was no significant difference (p = 0.78) in palpation accuracy between the traditional and BP group, although students in the BP group were randomly assigned subjects with a significantly (p = 0.005) higher BMI. Ninety-five percent of students were able to palpate within one spinal level of the L4 SP. Students in the BP group reported that the BP activity facilitated learning and active participation. There was no significant difference in palpation time (p = 0.98) between groups. There was a fair correlation (r=-0.41) between palpation accuracy and subject BMI. Discussion/Conclusion: While body painting was an enjoyable activity to incorporate into palpation laboratory, it is unclear whether it enhanced lumbar SP palpation accuracy in first-year DPT students. To explore the potential effectiveness of myofascial release compared to passive muscle stretching and to a control group in modulating pain intensity and health status in adults diagnosed with fibromyalgia (FM). A preliminary randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted, consisting of eight weekly sessions. The participants were divided into three groups: myofascial release group (RG = 13), a muscle stretching group (SG = 13), and a control group (CG = 12), which received advice from a rheumatologist. The outcomes measured were the visual analogue pain scale (VAS), the fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ) (representing health status), and the number of painful areas. Univariate analyzes of covariance (ANCOVA) were performed at baseline, after 4 weeks (during treatment), after 8 weeks (post-treatment), and after 12 weeks (follow-up). The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) were included as covariates. Clinical trial registration number: NCT: 03408496. After eight weeks, the RG showed lower VAS scores compared to the CG (mean difference 95% CI: −5.10 to −1.26) and the SG (mean difference 95% CI: −4.9 to −0.23) with no difference between the SG and the CG. The total FIQ score for the RG was lower than the CG after 4 weeks (95% CI: −49.92 to −5.61), and 8 weeks (mean difference 95% CI: −52.72 to −15.73), although there was no difference between the RG and SG, as well as between the SG and CG, at both time points. The number of painful body areas was similar in all groups at the four time points. Preliminary results suggest that the RG possibly showed greater improvements in pain intensity and health status compared to the CG, and possibly greater improvements in pain intensity compared to the SG. Myofascial release in fibromyalgia may potentially have greater improvements on pain modulation and health status when compared to medical counseling. Myofascial release, when compared to stretching, may potentially offer greater improvement in pain modulation in fibromyalgia. Most activities of daily living (ADLs) require the use of both upper extremities. However, few assessments exist to assess bimanual performance, especially among adults living with cerebral palsy (CP). The aim of this preliminary study is to assess the interrater reliability and convergent validity of the Assisting Hand Assessment (AHA) scoring grid applied to unstandardized ADLs. For this validation study, nineteen adults living with spastic unilateral CP were videotaped performing seven bimanual ADLs. Three raters assessed the videos independently using the 20-item grid of the AHA. Gwet's AC2 was used to assess interrater reliability. Kendall's Tau-b correlation was used between the observation-based scoring grid and Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT) scores to assess convergent validity. Interrater reliability was good (0.84, SD = 0.02). The correlation with the JTHFT was high (τb = −0.74; p < 0.001). The results show the potential of using an observation-based scoring grid with unstandardized ADLs to assess bimanual performance in adults living with CP, but further research on psychometric properties is needed. This method allows for an assessment that is occupation-oriented, ecological, and meaningful. An observation-based scoring grid (Assisting Hand Assessment) can be applied in unstandardized activities of daily living to assess bimanual performance in adults with cerebral palsy. This method allows an occupation-oriented, ecological, and client-meaningful assessment. To translate and investigate inter-rater reliability, internal consistency, content validity, and construct validity of the Brazilian-Portuguese Version of the Brachial Plexus Outcome Measure Scale (BPOM-Br). The translation followed international guidelines. Inter-rater reliability was tested with 51 individuals with Neonatal Brachial Plexus Palsy (NBPP), aged between 4 to 16 years old. To determine concurrent construct validity, children were also assessed with the Mallet Scale. Statistical analysis included Bland-Altman, Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), Floor and Ceiling and effect, and Pearson correlation. The majority of the sample consisted of children with upper NBPP (75.2%), mean age of 8.9 years old. BPOM-Br showed appropriate content validity (comprehensiveness) according to rehabilitation professionals. It also showed excellent inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.90) and internal consistency (α = 0.91). Bland-Altman analysis showed bias close to zero. Finally, BPOM-Br showed overall significant positive correlations with the Mallet scale items (rs= 0.31 to 0.78 p < 0.05), indicating adequate concurrent validity. BPOM-Br is a consistent, reliable, and valid instrument to assess activity of school-aged children with NBPP. The Brazilian-Portuguese Version of the Brachial Plexus Outcome Measure Scale (BPOM-Br) presents understandable items and no ceiling and floor effects. The BPOM-Br provides a valid and reliable version for use in Brazilian school-aged children with neonatal brachial plexus palsy. Traditionally, students' overall satisfaction with their educational experience was typically measured using a single question or a straightforward 'yes' or 'no' response. However, this approach might not capture their complete assessment of other aspects of satisfaction. The design of School Courtyard is expected to be one of these aspects, and it will be the subject of this quantitative research. To gather the data, a self-administered survey was made available to a sample of secondary school students from two private schools. To investigate and validate the connection between School Courtyard Design, Courtyard Suitability and Courtyard Attractiveness with Students' Satisfaction, three hypotheses were developed. To evaluate the viability of the developed hypotheses, software namely SPSS (Statistical Package for Science Software) was used to carry out several tests, including regression analysis and correlation coefficient. The results showed a high relationship significance between the School Courtyard Design and Students' Satisfaction with a chance of 37.5%. Student satisfaction can be predicted also by Courtyard Suitability with a 22.9% chance. Finally, Students' Satisfaction can be additionally predicted by the Courtyard Attractiveness with a 24.7% chance. To examine the feasibility of stroke survivors receiving music-based rehabilitation via a mobile app. We recruited ten chronic stroke survivors who were community-dwelling with mild-moderate upper extremity (UE) paresis. Participants were encouraged to exercise their paretic UE with a commercial instrument training app, Yousician, with a piano keyboard at home for three weeks. The feasibility of the training was measured by: (a) the acceptance of using the app to receive in-home piano training (e.g., daily usage time, exit interview) and (b) the effects of the app functionality as a rehabilitation tool (e.g., participants' motor improvements after training). Our small sample size of participants demonstrated general positive feedback and self-motivation (e.g., interest in extended training time) about using a mobile app to receive in-home, music-based UE training. Participants showed no trend of declined usage and practiced on average ∼33 min per day for 4–5 days per week during the 3-week participation. We also observed positive results in the Fugl-Meyer Assessment, Action Research Arm Test, and Nine Hole Peg Test after training. This study provided insight into the feasibility of delivering music-based interventions through mobile health (mHealth) technology for stroke populations. Although this was a small sample size, participants' positive and negative comments and feedback provided useful information for future rehab app development. We suggest four ways to further improve and design a patient-oriented app to facilitate the use of a mHealth app to deliver in-home music-based interventions for stroke survivors. Stroke survivors showed acceptance and positive feedback on receiving in-home music-based training via a mobile app. mHealth technologies may allow positive effects of music-based interventions in motor performance and home practice compliance. Further developments in the co-design process with patients, caregivers, and therapists are needed to design a patient-oriented app to deliver better in-home music-based interventions for stroke survivors. A number of studies have examined historical climatological trends back to the Middle Ages. However, few have investigated these trends near important historical sites such as medieval battlefields. Most studies on medieval battles and battlefields focus almost exclusively on interpreting the written records from a literary standpoint and on knowledge of the site on which the battle took place, with rarely much consideration for other perspectives. While the written records are important, only focusing on them limits understanding and ignores the environment itself. A historical climatological perspective would contribute to the study of medieval warfare by exploring relevant long-term climatic proxies as well as mapping weather conditions around the time of the campaign and battle. As an example, this study will investigate the weather during Duke William's voyage to England in 1066. The study concludes with a discussion of the implications of these techniques for applying weather analyses to other historical events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate the real-life safety, morphological, and visual outcomes of the dexamethasone intravitreal implant (Ozurdex) in patients with macular edema (ME) within a low-middle-income country (LMIC) setting. Methods: Patients with ME who received Ozurdex injections between 2012 and 2018 were included. Central retinal thickness (CRT), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), lens status, and intraocular pressure (IOP) at baseline and last follow-up were compared. Univariate and multivariate analyses identified factors associated with visual improvement. Results: 154 patients were enrolled. Diabetic ME was the most common etiology (32.4%), followed by central retinal vein occlusion (18.8%), branch retinal vein occlusion (14.2%), and uveitis (9.99%). CRT was significantly reduced in all patients except those with uveitis but did not correlate with BCVA improvement. Lower baseline visual acuity (OR=1.67), younger age (OR=1.87), and ME secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion (OR=1.34) were associated with BCVA improvement (p < 0.05). During follow-up, 11 patients (7.14%) developed cataracts, and 22 (14.2%) showed increased IOP; these complications resolved without affecting final BCVA improvement. Conclusion: In an LMIC setting, Ozurdex effectively reduces CRT in diabetic and retinal vein occlusion-related ME but not in uveitis. BCVA improvement depends on factors beyond CRT reduction. Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) has seen increasing use in the prehospital environment over the last decade, primarily with the extended focused assessment with sonography in trauma (eFAST) exam. Previous studies have shown prehospital eFAST exams are feasible in the helicopter transport environment but have yet to demonstrate effects on clinical care. This retrospective case series identified 655 patients with blunt thoraco-abdominal trauma or concern for pneumothorax due to penetrating injury transported by a single helicopter EMS (HEMS) program over a two-year period after introducing POCUS. Of those patients, 258 received prehospital ultrasound which was reported to change clinical care in seven cases (2.7%, 95%-CI [1.1–5.5]). This was primarily through preventing unnecessary needle thoracostomy and initiating blood transfusion for treatment of hemorrhagic shock in cases where the degree of shock was unclear due to inconsistent vital signs. This paper reports a comparison of different spatial and statistical models to predict the concentrations of the particulate matter (PM10), measured by the environmental stations of the Community of Madrid (Spain). A special-topics undergraduate course about the history of statistics which was taught in Spring 2023 at the University of South Carolina is described. We review other similar courses (past and current) and explain the discussion-based nature of this course. The conception and planning of the course are detailed, and the unique experiences (activities, guest speakers, presentations, etc.) are described. The course emphasized substantial amounts of independent reading outside of class and lively discussions during class. Topics covered in the class include the early development of probability, the normal distribution, and the central limit theorem; the development of modern statistical science by British statisticians; the rise of formal mathematical statistics; and increasing specialization and modern computational and data-analytic advances. An assessment of the course's effectiveness based on qualitative student survey data is given. Students were highly complimentary of the course, praising the in-class discussion format, the benefits of doing the outside readings, the invited guest speakers, and the in-class activities. There were occasional comments that the amount of required reading was excessive. Based on this, suggestions for future offerings of the course are presented, including developing a more carefully curated set of readings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Little is known about family mental illness and substance use disorder (SUD). This case-control study explored the relationship between family (parents and/or siblings) mental health problems (FMHP) and lifetime substance use disorder (SUD), considering a gender perspective. A sample of 387 patients (n = 306 men, 79.1%; n = 81 women, 20.9%) was recruited from the Proyecto Hombre Navarra (Spain) addiction treatment program. Patients with (80 men; 24 women) and without (226 men; 57 women) FMHP were compared, taking sex into account. The prevalence of FMHP was 26.9%, without significant differences between men (n = 80; 26.1%) and women (n = 24; 29.6%). Men with FMHP reported higher severity in family/social and psychiatric areas than those without FMHP. Women with FMHP reported a higher severity in the psychiatric area and a higher prevalence of anxiety problems, suicidal attempts, previous psychopharmacological treatments, and physical abuse than women without FMHP. FMHP is highly prevalent in patients with SUD. They are associated with lifetime psychopathological problems, mainly in men. Further specific research is needed to evaluate this issue to develop specific treatments tailored to the needs of patients with FMHP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are vulnerable to COVID-19 transmission due to substance use, congregate living conditions, and underlying medical conditions. Yet, little is known about factors impacting drug use disorder among PEH during COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to identify correlates associated with substance use disorder among PEH, both those who were diagnosed with COVID-19 and those who tested negative or never tested. A cross-sectional, structured survey was administered to PEH (N = 102) who were recruited from sheltered and unsheltered settings. Descriptive analysis, t-tests, Fisher's exact test or chi-squared test, and bivariate and multiple linear regression were conducted. PEH with a COVID-19 diagnosis included male gender, and Latino race/ethnicity (p <.05). Moreover, substance use disorder scores (p -.037) and days on the street were negatively associated with COVID-19 (p <.001). Multivariable analyses revealed a significant positive relationship between days slept on the street and substance use disorder (p <.001), and a significant negative relationship with alcohol use (p <.05); COVID-19 remained negatively associated with substance use disorder, but it was not significant. This study provides evidence about correlates of drug use disorder among PEH. More studies are needed to understand successful individual and system-level strategies for reducing drug-related problems during COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the prevalence and negative outcomes associated with simultaneous alcohol and cannabis use (i.e., marijuana [SAM] use, i.e., so that the effects of both alcohol and cannabis overlap) among college students, there is no comprehensive measure of SAM use, with past research relying on single items. The present study aimed to develop the Alcohol and Cannabis Simultaneous Use Scale (ACSUS), a comprehensive self-report measure of SAM use frequency, quantity, and problems in college students. College students at two Midwestern universities who used alcohol and cannabis (Study 1: N = 534; Mean age = 19; 71% female; 88% White; Study 2: N = 258; Mean age = 21; 81% female; 85% White) completed the newly developed ACSUS. Exploratory factor analysis (Study 1) revealed that the ACSUS fits best with 9-items representing two factors: Factor 1 measures frequency and quantity of SAM use and Factor 2 measures associated problems with SAM use. Confirmatory factor analysis (Study 2) supported the two-factor structure of the ACSUS, which was positively associated with measures of alcohol use, cannabis use, simultaneous use motives, and impulsivity. To estimate the extent to which drinking to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic and experiencing pandemic-related life stressors are associated with alcohol use escalation among young adults. Respondents in Los Angeles, CA, USA (N = 2,130) completed prospective cohort study surveys before (baseline; October 2018–November 2019; mean age: 19.7[SD = 0.4]) and during (follow-up; May–August 2020) the COVID-19 outbreak. Past 30-day drinking days and number of drinks per drinking day were assessed from baseline to follow-up. At follow-up, participants reported drinking to cope with social isolation and pandemic-related stressors. Pandemic-related stressor prevalence ranged from 5.5% (evicted/lost home) to 72.6% (worried about education) and 27.1% drank to cope with social isolation during the pandemic. Respondents who did (vs. did not) report pandemic-related coping drinking were more likely to increase past 30-day drinking days and drinks per drinking day from baseline to follow-up after adjustment for possible confounders. Employment loss/reduction, financial problems, and perceived likelihood of contracting COVID-19 or handling the pandemic poorly were each associated with increases in drinking days or drinks per drinking day. The occurrence of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are associated with adverse outcomes but have largely been studied in populations outside of acute care. The current study examines (1) the prevalence of BPSD during acute hospitalization and (2) if BPSD are predictive of adverse patient outcomes. A secondary analysis of Family-centered Function-focused Care (Fam-FFC) data including 461 patients with dementia/care partner dyads assessed at hospital admission, discharge, 2 months, and 6 months post-discharge, was conducted. Prevalence of BPSD (Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Questionnaire total and Frontal, Hyperactivity, Mood, and Psychosis sub-categories), associations with patient and care partner characteristics, and prediction of adverse events (falls, emergency room [ER] visits, hospitalizations, injury) were examined. BPSD were highly prevalent (93.9% admission, 86.7% discharge). The most common symptom cluster at admission was Hyperactivity (76.7%) followed by Mood (72.3%) and Psychosis (71.9%), and Frontal (25.9%). Higher admission Hyperactivity was associated with ER admissions at 2 months, higher discharge Hyperactivity was associated with ER admissions and hospitalizations at 2 months, and change in Psychosis was associated with ER admissions at 2 months. Purpose: The development of culturally and linguistically appropriate resources to support communication interventions for underserved communities is an urgent necessity. The purpose of the study was to obtain stakeholder feedback on vocabulary items from a Sepedi core vocabulary list developed as a resource for vocabulary selection for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, and to expand the list based on stakeholders' vocabulary recommendations. Method: A questionnaire was used to obtain the ratings of 57 stakeholders regarding the importance of including 155 Sepedi words from the Sepedi core vocabulary list on an AAC system for a child with receptive language skills at the level of a 4-year-old or higher. Stakeholders also suggested additional words to include on the system. Result: All words were rated as important or very important. However, there was a statistically significant inverse relationship between the average frequency of occurrence of words belonging to a specific category and the average importance rating that stakeholders assigned to words in that category. A total of 48 words were additionally suggested by three or more stakeholders. Conclusion: Stakeholder ratings validated the list as relevant to consult in vocabulary selection for Sepedi AAC systems for children. Purpose: We investigated the association between the time to first post-extubation oral intake, barriers to oral intake, and the rate of activities of daily living (ADL) independence at discharge (Barthel Index score <70). Method: Consecutive patients admitted to the intensive care unit, aged ≥18 years, and mechanically ventilated for ≥48 hr were retrospectively enrolled. The time to first oral intake, barriers to oral intake, daily changes, and clinical outcomes were assessed. Multiple logistic regression analysis adjusted for baseline characteristics was used to determine the association between time to first post-extubation oral intake and ADL independence. Result: Among the 136 patients, 74 were assigned to the ADL independence group and 62 to the dependence group. The time to first post-extubation oral intake was significantly associated with ADL independence (adjusted p = < 0.001) and was a predictor of ADL independence at discharge. Respiratory and dysphagia-related factors (odds ratio [OR] 0.35; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.15–0.82, p = 0.015 and OR 0.07; CI 0.01–0.68, p = 0.021, respectively) were significantly associated with the ADL independence at discharge. Conclusion: Respiratory and dysphagia-related factors, as barriers to the initiation of oral intake after extubation, were significantly associated with ADL independence at discharge. Purpose: The present study examines cross-sectional trends in performance on a quasi-universal non-word repetition (NWR) task. It also considers whether NWR performance is dependent on levels of exposure to a language and compares the performance of bilingual children across their two languages. Method: A cross-sectional design was employed. The English and French quasi-universal NWR tasks, featuring stimuli from two to five syllables in length, was administered to Canadian school-aged monolinguals and two groups of bilinguals: those who encountered their second language in early childhood and those who encountered their second language at school entry. Result: When evaluated in English, the early-exposure bilinguals produced significantly fewer errors than the school-entry exposure bilinguals and the English monolingual groups. When evaluated in French, the early-exposure bilinguals and the French monolinguals produced significantly fewer errors than the school-entry exposure bilinguals. Compared across languages, the French monolinguals produced fewer errors on the French version of the NWR task than the English monolinguals did on the English version of the same task. In both languages and across all analyses, the youngest age group (7–8 years) produced more errors than the two older groups (9–10 years and 11–12 years). Conclusion: The quasi-universal NWR task showed sensitivity to improvements from 7 to 11 years of age in English and up to 9 years of age in French. Better performance in French may be due to the relatively greater frequency of multisyllabic words in that language. The development and use of this particular NWR task with monolinguals and bilinguals—in both of their languages—contribute to a deeper understanding of quasi-universal NWR performance in typically developing children. Purpose: This study explored how respiration, voice, and speech were affected following expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) and maintenance training in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD) or multiple sclerosis (MS). Method: Nine participants with PD and six with MS participated in a randomised study, where the effects of EMST, sham, and maintenance treatment were investigated. Outcome measures included maximum expiratory pressure (MEP); maximum phonation time (MPT); intelligibility; verbal diadochokinesis (DDK); speech rate; a self-report form on voice, speech, and communication; and open questions about how the participants experienced the intervention. Group comparisons were performed within and between groups. Result: The PD and the MS groups both improved significantly in MEP, and this improvement remained after 3 months of maintenance EMST. An improvement was also seen in DDK. Post-EMST, 33% of the PD group and 80% of the MS group reported a positive effect on communication. Conclusion: The results of this study support previous evidence that EMST has positive effects on expiratory pressure in persons with PD or MS, but its effect on voice and speech remains unclear. Since subjective reports of the intervention and effects on communication were predominantly positive, further research is needed on larger groups to explore appropriate outcome measures. Purpose: To evaluate the reliability, validity, and diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity, specificity) of the Intelligibility in Context Scale in Saudi Arabic (ICS-SA) and English (ICS-E) as potential measures of functional speech intelligibility in bilingual preschool-aged Saudi Arabian children. Method: The study included 36 parent-child (aged 3;0 to 6;5 years; months) dyads who were bilingual speakers of Saudi Arabic and English, which included two groups—typically developing (TD, n = 29) and suspected speech sound disordered (sSSD, n = 7). The children's intelligibility was evaluated in both languages using the ICS-SA and ICS-E. Children's single-word productions were collected in both languages and calculated for percentage of consonants, vowels, and phonemes correct (i.e. PCC/PVC/PPC) to establish their speech-sound competence. Result: The mean scores for the entire sample (n = 36) were 4.43 (SD = 0.79) for the ICS-SA and 4.48 (SD = 0.79) for the ICS-E, showing that parents rated their children's intelligibility in both languages similarly. Both the ICS-SA and ICS-E demonstrated excellent internal consistency (α = 0.96 and α = 0.95, respectively). There was high inter-rater and test-retest reliability for the ICS-SA, while there was fair to high inter-rater and test-retest reliability in ICS-E. Significant correlations were found for the ICS-SA, but weak correlations were noted for the ICS-E, which indicated fair to moderate evidence of criterion validity. Construct validity efforts indicated a weak correlation with age on both the ICS-SA and ICS-E. The findings also indicated high discriminant accuracy for both the ICS-SA (0.86, 0.86) and ICS-E (0.71, 0.69). Conclusion: This study provides initial validation and reliability evidence for using the ICS-SA and ICS-E with Saudi Arabic- and English-speaking preschoolers, however, ICS-E scores suggest further testing is warranted. By extension, these findings expand the bilingual knowledge base and offer new tools for identifying children in Saudi Arabia who may be at risk for having a speech sound disorder. Purpose: The primary aim of this pilot study was to determine the preliminary effectiveness of an online self-compassion intervention for improving self-compassion and quality of life in adults who stutter. A secondary aim was to determine intervention acceptability and participant satisfaction. Method: Participants included adults who stutter who completed an online self-compassion module once a week for six consecutive weeks. Pre- and post-intervention measures included the Self-Compassion Scale-Trait and the Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering. Participants also completed acceptability questionnaires weekly and post-intervention via quantitative and qualitative reports. Result: Ten participants completed all six intervention modules, as well as pre- and post-intervention measures. Participants reported increased self-compassion and improved quality of life at post-intervention, as well as high intervention acceptability with regard to delivery format, content, duration, and relevance to stuttering and daily life. Individual variation was also observed across acceptability domains. Conclusion: The present study provides pilot data supporting the use of online modules to increase self-compassion and decrease the negative impact of stuttering on the quality of life among adults who stutter. The unexpected spread of the pandemic raised concerns regarding pilots' skill decay resulting from the significant drops in the frequency of flights by about 70%. This research retrieved 4761 Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) occurrences based on the FDM programme containing 123,140 flights operated by an international airline between June 2019 and May 2021. The FDM severity index was analysed by event category, aircraft type, and flight phase. The results demonstrate an increase in severity score from the pre-pandemic level to the pandemic onset on events that occurred on different flight phases. This trend is not present in the third stage, which indicates that pilots and the safety management system of the airline demonstrated resilience to cope with the flight disruptions during the pandemic. Through the analysis of event severity, FDM enables safety managers to recommend measures to increase safety resilience and self-monitoring capabilities of both operators and regulators. Practitioner summary: The onset of the pandemic led to a rise in the severity of flight data monitoring events in a large airline, likely linked to a lack of operational practice and skills decay. This was demonstrated across different flight phases and aircraft types. In the settled pandemic period, the severity index returned to pre-pandemic levels, indicating that the resilience of individual pilots and safety management systems is critical to operational safety. The FDM event severity scores significantly increased following the pandemic onset, especially for event categories involving pilot core competencies. The FDM event severity scores stagnated or decreased during the later pandemic stage indicating resilience among the airline pilots and the airline's safety management system. The airline and pilots demonstrated resilience by effectively mitigating the effects of proficiency decay which took place as the pandemic started. Working memory tasks, such as n-back and arithmetic tasks, are frequently used in studying mental workload. The present study investigated and compared the sensitivity of several physiological measures at three levels of difficulty of n-back and arithmetic tasks. The results showed significant differences in fixation duration and pupil diameter among three task difficulty levels for both n-back and arithmetic tasks. Pupil diameters increase with increasing mental workload, whereas fixation duration decreases. Blink duration and heart rate (HR) were significantly increased as task difficulty increased in the n-back task, while root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) and standard deviation of R-R intervals (SDNN) were significantly decreased in the arithmetic task. On the other hand, blink rate and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) were not sensitive enough to assess the differences in task difficulty for both tasks. All significant physiological measures yielded significant differences between low and high task difficulty except for SDNN. Practitioner summary: This study aimed to assess the sensitivity levels of several physiological measures of mental workload in n-back and arithmetic tasks. Sportswear manufactured from hygroscopic fibres can absorb moisture during activity or intermittent exercise and may change the thermal management of clothing. This change in the thermal behaviour of the fabric can lead to buffer the post-exercise chill. During activity in a moderately cold environment clothing made of 100% wool fibre helps wearers to slow down evaporative and conductive cooling, which can provide more thermal and comfort sensation compared to 100% cotton, 100% viscose, and 100% polyester. Twelve males performed cycling in a controlled climate chamber of temperature: 15 ± 0.5 °C, and relative humidity (RH):50 ± 5% followed by a drying phase in a windy environment by wearing full-sleeve t-shirts. Wool shirt was observed to hold a greater torso skin temperature (p < 0.05) than the other fibre types. Participants were asked a range of comfort-related questions at varying intervals. The temperature sensation was found (p < 0.05) significant for wool clothing. Moreover, participants rated wool shirt significantly (p < 0.05) as more comfortable during the post-exercise phase. Both clothing and physiological responses were investigated during exercise and post-exercise periods for male participants while wearing full-sleeve sportswear made of wool, cotton, viscose, and polyester. Numbers don't speak for themselves – yet taking numbers for granted (numerism) is widespread. In fact, journalists often rely heavily on numbers precisely because they are widely considered objective. As a team of journalists and social scientists, we undertook a qualitative exploration of clauses and entire news reports that are particularly quantitatively dense. The dense clauses were often grammatically complex and assumed familiarity with sophisticated concepts. They were rarely associated with explanations of data collection methods. Meanwhile, the dense news reports were all about economy or health topics, chiefly brief updates on an ongoing event (e.g., stock market fluctuations; COVID-19 cases). We suggest that journalists can support public understanding by: Providing more detail about research methods; Writing shorter, clearer sentences; Providing context behind statistics; Being transparent about uncertainty; and Indicating where consensus lies. Divergences that satisfy Pythagorean-type identity are found to be quite useful in statistical inference. Projection theorem of these divergences explores the associated inference problems through closed-form estimators and a fixed number of sufficient statistics. This work attempts to unify the Pythagorean property and projection theorem of such divergences, including the well-known KL, Basu et al., and Jones et al. divergences, minimization of which result in an M-estimation. This unification characterizes a general form of power-law distributions that includes the well-known Student-t and Student-r families. Rao-Blackwell-type best estimators for these families are derived using sufficient statistics based on the proposed unified class of divergences. Abstract.To check the significance of the regression coefficients in the linear component of high-dimensional partial linear models, we proposed some projection-based test statistics. These test statistics are connected with U-statistics of order two and they are applicable for diverging dimensions and heteroscedastic model errors. By using the martingale central limit theorem, we show the asymptotic normalities of the proposed test statistics under the null hypothesis and local alternative hypotheses. The performance of test statistics are evaluated by simulation studies. The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program has shown promising results for people suffering from mental fatigue after an acquired brain injury. The aim was to evaluate the feasibility of a MBSR program performed as an online self-study course for this group of people. Sixty participants who had suffered an acquired brain injury with lasting mental fatigue were randomized to an online MBSR course or to a waitlist control group. They answered self-report questionnaires before start and after the course. Sixteen completed the MBSR program. With the repeated ANOVA no significant difference between groups was found, although there was a significant change in time (the repetition factor). The post-hoc paired t-test indicated a significant reduction and a large-to-median effect size in mental fatigue (p = 0.003, d = 0.896), depression (p = 0.038, d = 0.569) and anxiety (p = 0.030, d = 0.598) for the MBSR group. No significant changes were found for the control group. An online self-study MBSR program for people suffering from mental fatigue after an acquired brain injury can be a feasible option for those suffering from less severe mental fatigue and emotional symptoms, while others may require a program adapted to their needs. To examine health-related self-efficacy for individuals following acquired brain or spinal cord injury prior to enrollment in a weight-loss intervention and associations with demographics, injury characteristics, and additional physiologic variables. Cross-sectional analysis of baseline data for community-dwelling adults following stroke (CVA), traumatic brain injury (TBI), or spinal cord injury (SCI) across three disability-adapted weight-loss interventions. Overall results suggest a significant difference between injury type and self-efficacy as measured by the Self Rated Abilities for Health Practices (SRAHP) scale. On average, individuals with SCI had the lowest overall perceived self-efficacy of the three groups (11.2-unit difference; (CI: −17.4, −5.0), followed by those with TBI (9.5-unit difference; (CI: −16.7, −2.4). There were also differences between groups in age, number of household members, time since injury, sex, race, marital status, physiological measures, and employment status. Results suggest that individuals with different disabilities following neurological injuries have different baseline perceptions in their ability to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Health interventions should be tailored for these groups based on disability-specific barriers and should include components to enhance health-related self-efficacy to address weight management among these populations. To compare the effects of end-range manual therapy versus other conservative intervention on pain intensity, shoulder range of movement (ROM), and physical function in adhesive capsulitis (AC). Two reviewers conducted a comprehensive search from inception to December 2022. PUBMED, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, EMBASE, and PEDro databases were searched. Clinical trials investigating the effects of end-range mobilisation techniques on pain, ROM, and physical function in patients with AC were included. Methodological quality was evaluated using the PEDro scale, and bias risk was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration tool. GRADE was used to assess the certainty of the evidence. Data were presented using forest plots, and the random effects models were applied according to the Cochrane handbook. Ten randomised controlled trials were reviewed, involving 424 AC patients aged 20–70 years. Methodological quality of studies ranged from high to low. The end-range mobilisation showed improvements in pain intensity, shoulder abduction, internal rotation, and external rotation, and physical function compared to other conservative interventions in the short-and medium-terms. Certainty of the evidence was downgraded to very low. Very low certainty evidence suggests that end-range mobilisation techniques improve pain intensity, shoulder ROM, and physical function in the short-and medium-term in AC. The Kaltenborn, Maitland, and Mulligan concepts are the most commonly used manual therapy approaches for adhesive capsulitis. The End-range mobilisation techniques seem to improve pain intensity, shoulder range of motion, and physical function at short- and medium-term of follow-up. The certainty of evidence was rated as very low for all the outcome measures. Despite the low certainty of evidence, it is recommended to continue using manual therapy for adhesive capsulitis due to the improvements demonstrated until further studies either confirm or refute its definitive efficacy. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between various clinical factors and physical function in the early postoperative period in patients with soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) by subjective and objective evaluations. The 90 patients enrolled in this study were classified into five groups according to tumor location: retroperitoneal, gluteal, groin, thigh, and lower leg. The Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) score was evaluated at discharge; the timed up-and-go test (TUGT) was performed preoperatively and at discharge. Group comparisons by tumor location were performed. To identify significant factors associated with physical dysfunction, multivariate analysis was performed using an MSTS score of <80% and a change in pre and postoperative TUGT score. There were no significant differences between the tumor location and physical function. The change in pre- and postoperative TUGT scores was significantly associated with an MSTS score of <80%. Quadriceps and tibialis anterior muscle resections were significantly associated with the change in pre- and post-operative TUGT scores. The quadriceps and tibialis anterior muscles may affect physical dysfunction after surgery for STSs. Early postoperative rehabilitation should include the identification of resected muscles and functional improvement of residual muscles, possibly with orthotic support for knee extension and ankle dorsiflexion. Surgical intervention for soft tissue sarcomas often leads to functional impairment of lower extremities. The Musculoskeletal Tumor Society scoring system and timed up-and-go test (TUGT) can be used as subjective and objective evaluations of physical function in patients with tumors in the lower extremities. The quadriceps and tibialis anterior muscle resections were significantly associated with change in the pre- and postoperative TUGT scores in the early postoperative period in patients with soft tissue sarcomas (STSs). To translate and cross-culturally adapt The Community Integration Measure into Turkish (CIM-T) and to assess its reliability and validity in patients with chronic stroke. Fifty participants completed the CIM-T, Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ) and the London Handicap Scale (LHS). All participants completed the CIM-T questionnaire twice in 7 days. The internal consistency of the CIM-T was assessed using Cronbach's alpha, while the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) was used to evaluate test-retest reliability. The convergent validity of CIM-T was determined with CIQ and LHS by using Pearson's and Spearman's correlation coefficient analysis. The CIM-T demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.955) and test-retest reliability (ICC= 0.992). The CIM-T showed a good correlation with CIQ (R = 0.727, p < 0.001) and LHS (R = 0.694, p < 0.001). The Turkish version of CIM is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing chronic stroke patients. It is a preferable scale for the clinical evaluation of Turkish-speaking patients with chronic stroke. The Community Integration Measure was successfully translated into Turkish and validated in a population with chronic stroke according to established guidelines. In recent years, some interested data can be recorded only if the values fall within an interval range, and the responses are often subject to censoring. Attempting to perform effective statistical analysis with censored, especially heavy-tailed and asymmetric data, can be difficult. In this paper, we develop a novel linear regression model based on the proposed skewed generalized t distribution for censored data. The likelihood-based inference and diagnostic analysis are established using the Expectation/Conditional Maximization Either algorithm in conjunction with smoothing approximate functions. We derive relevant measures to perform global influence for this novel model and develop local influence analysis based on the conditional expectation of the complete-data log-likelihood function. Some useful perturbation schemes are discussed. We illustrate the finite sample performance and the robustness of the proposed method by simulation studies. Hygrothermal exposure significantly impacts polymer composite (PMC) performance, affecting various industries. This study evaluated the short-term hygrothermal effects on PMCs by examining interfacial shear strength (IFSS), water uptake, glass transition temperature (Tg), and morphology. Data-driven techniques minimized experimental time while analyzing multiple factors. Specimens were immersed in water at 25°C and 70°C for 3, 7, and 14 days. The IFSS between carbon nanotube yarns and carbon fiber with epoxy (EPON™ 862) was measured before and after exposure. Statistical analysis indicated that fiber type significantly influenced IFSS, while time had a marginal effect and temperature had no impact. The IFSS decreased by 4.14% for CF/epoxy and 14.9% for CNT/epoxy. Water uptake analysis revealed weight gains of 0.465% and 1.566% for epoxy after 14 days at 25°C and 70°C, respectively. Morphological studies showed moisture penetration between 7 and 14 days. Thermomechanical analysis (TMA) indicated that pristine epoxy expanded by 0.318% of its original height. After 14 days, the Tg of epoxy decreased by 6.4% at 25°C and 9.7% at 70°C. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) on dried epoxy samples showed similar Tg but varied tan delta curves due to plasticization. Trend scoring constructed response items (i.e. rescoring Time A responses at Time B) gives rise to two-way data that follow a product multinomial distribution rather than the multinomial distribution that is usually assumed. Recent work has shown that the difference in sampling model can have profound negative effects on statistics usually used to monitor rater drift. In this paper, three statistics, termed E-statistics, that account for the product-multinomial sampling by comparing conditional distributions, are introduced. A simulation compares performance with the paired t-test and Stuart's Q in detecting rater drift. Both the paired t-test and Q suffered extreme Type I error inflation for certain rescore study designs. Mixed-format tests that include both multiple-choice (MC) and constructed-response (CR) items have become widely used in many large-scale assessments. When an item response theory (IRT) model is used to score a mixed-format test, the unidimensionality assumption may be violated if the CR items measure a different construct from that measured by MC items. In this simulation study, we explore the impact of different degrees of violation on the unidimensionality assumption on Rasch item parameter recovery and model-data fit statistics. Our results suggest that, when the unidimensionality assumption is violated for mixed-format tests, both estimated Rasch item parameters and model-data fit statistics are distorted, with greater impact corresponding to higher degrees of violations. Governing boards and executive leaders play important roles ensuring that their organizations work toward their missions and maintain their visions, while also meeting compliance and performance goals. The level of executive involvement in hospital governing boards varies across organizations, with little evidence to suggest whether and to what degree executive involvement influences hospital performance. The aim of this study is to determine the influence of executive involvement in governance on health system performance. The sample analyzed in this study were organizations responding to The Governance Institute's (TGI) Biennial Survey of Hospital and Health Systems in 2017. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to examine associations between self-reported executive leadership team involvement in governing boards and a composite metric of health system performance calculated by Truven Analytics as part of the "Top 100" program. Results indicate executive involvement is associated with several organizational characteristics, including whether an institution was defined as a hospital or health system, whether or not the board was appointed by the parent/system, and whether the board was accountable to the parent/system board. Although no significant direct relationship was found between executive team involvement in governance and overall health system performance, several promising pathways for future study were identified and are discussed, including examining specific organizational performance outcomes rather than composite measures. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread throughout the world causing serious morbidity and mortality. Health care professionals (HCP) are on the front line in the face of this pandemic and are identified as priorities for COVID-19 vaccination. This study aimed to estimate the acceptability rate of the COVID-19 vaccination among HCP and to identify their predisposing factors. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire including a randomized sample of HCP in Southern Tunisia, on March–April 2021. Results: Among 300 participants, the COVID-19 vaccine acceptability rate was 65.3%. Factors independently associated with vaccine acceptability were age groups <30 years [Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR)=4.36; p = 0.002)], urbanity of residence (AOR = 3.44; p = 0.027), medical professional category (AOR = 2.69; p = 0.023) and caring for coronavirus infected patients (AOR = 2.32; p = 0.047). Belief that COVID-19 vaccination is important to work safely as a health care provider (AOR = 3.26; p = 0.013), should be available for all HCP (AOR = 17.98; p = 0.004) and has been quickly developed before it has been thoroughly vetted and tested for efficacy and safety (AOR = 5.88; p < 0.01) were independently associated with willingness to accept vaccine. Planning to get a COVID-19 vaccine for the next years and recommending it to the family were independent predictive factors of accepting COVID-19 vaccine ((AOR = 6.88; p < 0.001) and (AOR = 25.03; p < 0.001), respectively).Conclusion: The acceptance rate of vaccination against COVID-19 among Tunisian HCP is still low in South Tunisian hospitals. Socio-demographic, cultural and professional factors predisposing to the vaccination willingness were highlighted. This work characterizes scientific and health information from posts addressing cosmetic products on Instagram for one-year. Portuguese profiles that cover cosmetic products were selected based on popularity and expertise. Posts concerning cosmetic products were recorded, and those containing scientific and health information were selected. A new method was used, which allows rating each post as "correct," "confuse," or "incorrect". Ten popular profiles and three expert profiles were selected. Forty-five posts containing scientific and health information about cosmetic products were analyzed. Background: The rod and frame test (RFT), a measure of field dependence-independence, recently has reemerged as a measure of research interest and potential diagnostic value in neuropsychology. In the standard RFT, the subject experiences offsetting visual cues from a frame surrounding an embedded rod, while the subject's postural/vestibular cues provide the sense of verticality as the subject attempts to set the rod to vertical. The paper shows that RFTs not adhering to RFT parameters can reduce the test's visual framework impact experienced by the subject. Comparisons of neuropsychological studies will highlight that correct adherence to RFT testing conditions can strengthen RFT effects. Method: This review presents the parameters that have been studied which impact on subject performance on the RFT. It identifies how computer administered RFTs have been applied to enhance the study of the RFT parameters and make the RFT more accessible to the study of different diagnostic groups. The article also critiques studies by identifying how the RFT's parameters, study's design and statistical analysis may have diminished identifying the full effects of the RFT experience. Results: Parameters impacting judgments of verticality of the rod can include: perceived size of rod and frame, the gap between the ends of the rod and surrounding frame, presentation of the rod within an encompassing 3D visual framework that visually blocks out the surrounding environment, a dark room, instructions stressing egocentric vs allocentric strategies, double frame surrounding the rod to assess global perception effects, etc. Details are presented how gap size likely affected results in neuropsychology studies. Potentially, these and other experiments may be studied using computer administered RFTs. Conclusions: Based on the descriptions of computer administered RFTs, this article suggested that incorporating these technologies can provide better understanding underlying the RFT, and in turn, understanding neuropsychology processes.
