Background: U.S. military veterans may be reluctant to disclose suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Suicide-specific cognitions, which generally avoid direct mention of suicide, may be reliable indicators of risk among those reluctant to disclose such thoughts and behaviors. Methods: Data from a population-based, cross-sectional study of 2,430 U.S. military veterans were analyzed to examine the associations between the Brief Suicide Cognitions Scale (B-SCS), suicidal ideation, and suicide planning. Results: After adjusting for age, sex, number of adverse childhood experiences, cumulative trauma burden, depressive symptom severity, and lifetime history of suicide attempt, total scores on the B-SCS (excluding the item mentioning suicide) were uniquely associated with suicidal ideation (odds ratio [OR] = 1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.15–1.32) and suicide planning (OR = 1.27, 95%CI = 1.18–1.37). Exploratory post-hoc analyses revealed that difficulties with solving and coping with one's problems were uniquely linked to these outcomes. Conclusions: Assessment of suicide-specific cognitions may help to enhance suicide detection and prevention in veterans, especially in those who may not directly disclose thoughts of suicide. People can present a systematic bias in sharing fake news on social media based on their political orientation: they tend to share fake news that support their political view more than they share fake news with different political leanings, even though both types of news are equally fake. Here, we explain this systematic bias (termed polarized sharing) by considering social identification theory aspects together with theories on gender differences in social conformity and response to threats. Findings based on a study of 250 Facebook users in the US revealed that partisan identification is a double edge-sword. It increased polarized sharing of fake news directly, but decreased it indirectly, by increasing social network heterophily, which in turn, demotivated polarized sharing of fake news. Importantly, these processes differed by gender. Men were more influenced directly by partisan identification, and women, were more influenced indirectly, through limited social network heterophily. Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) is shown to be useful in surgeries when the nervous system is at risk. Its success in part relies upon proper setup of often dozens of electrodes correctly placed and secured upon patients and inserted in specific stimulating and recording receptacles. Given the complicated setups and the demanding operating room environment, errors in setup are bound to occur. These have led to false negatives associated with new patient morbidities including, at times, paralysis. No studies quantify the prevalence of these types of setup errors. Approximately 800,000 operations annually utilize intraoperative neuromonitoring in the US alone, so even a small percentage of errors suggests clinical significance. In addition, these types of errors hinder the overall effectiveness of IONM and may result in lower reported sensitivities and lower cost-effectiveness of this important service. We sought to discover through a prospective study and verification through chart review the prevalence of "electrode-swap" errors (when recording and/or stimulating electrodes are incorrectly placed on the patient or in the IONM equipment during setup) across all procedures monitored. We found recording and/or stimulating electrode set up errors in 24 of 454 cases (5.3%). These data and examples of how errors were discovered intraoperatively are reported. We also offer techniques to help reduce this error rate. This study demonstrates a significant potential avoidable error in IONM diagnostic utility, patient outcome, and sensitivity/specificity of alert criteria. Objectives: Targeting is a communication strategy in which a message is designed to address a particular group. It has been postulated that targeting increases message relevance; however, researchers are still explicating relevance and its impact on downline cognitive processes (e.g. message quality, cognitive cost). The current study addresses both gaps by evaluating the impact of targeted materials for White and African American audiences. Design: Adult women (N = 266) aged 18-74 (Mage = 47.12, SD = 1.40) were recruited to participate in a 2 (targeting: multiracial, African American) × 2 (race: White participants, African American participants) × 2 (topic: Hypertension, Environmental Breast Cancer) message experiment. Results: Across both topics, African American participants in the African American condition had reduced cognitive costs, increased message clarity, and increased message relevance. An indirect serial mediation model was supported wherein the relationship between targeting and behavioral intention was mediated by perceived relevance and perceived message quality. Conclusion: Targeting enhances perceived message relevance which, in turn, impacts behavioral intentions via perceived message quality. Using a nationally representative sample of U.S. young adults aged 18–29-year-old, this study investigated the relationship between COVID-induced financial hardship and depression (N = 1080). About 40% of the sample had one or more financial hardships, a quarter reported depressive symptoms. The positive association between financial hardship and depression was cumulative: Those who had four different hardships were almost five times more likely to report depressive symptoms than those reported no hardship. Findings highlight the need to include financial stressors in mental health assessment and suggest a comprehensive policy response to mental health crisis among young adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Psychology is a high burnout profession; however, little empirical research has examined the emotional labour (i.e., surface acting, deep acting, expression of naturally felt emotions) of psychologists who provide psychological therapy. The present study examined whether a relationship exists between emotional labour and wellbeing (operationalised as burnout and affective symptoms) in this sample, and whether individual or work-related factors moderate this relationship. 113 Australian psychologists who provide regular psychological therapy responded to an anonymous, online, cross-sectional survey. This survey collected information on demographic and workplace variables; it also contained measures of emotional labour and wellbeing. The results indicated that, at a bivariate level, surface acting was a significant predictor of adverse wellbeing; deep acting had no predictive qualities; and the expression of naturally felt emotions was a significant predictor of improved wellbeing. Surface acting appeared to be the most salient predictor, and its relationship to burnout was moderated by compensation type. Reported rates of burnout were high within our sample, and our findings suggest that the masking of emotions by psychologists (i.e., surface acting) may be a contributing factor to adverse wellbeing. These findings carry implications for psychological training and practice. What is already known about this topic: Psychologists work in emotion-eliciting environments, which can necessitate the regulation of their emotions. Across industries, burnout arises when demands exceed resources; for psychologists, this may include instances in which the emotional demands of their work exceed their capacity to regulate effectively. Emotional labour, or the regulation of emotions in the workplace, is a reliable predictor of adverse wellbeing in the general working population; however, there has been little empirical examination of emotional labour in psychologists. What this topic adds: Psychologists who provide therapy report high rates of burnout. Psychologists adopt each emotional labour strategy (surface acting, deep acting, expression of naturally felt emotions) at comparable rates to previously published rates for workers in other work domains. This study analyzed the 2021 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) to assess food insecurity among adults aged 65 and older. Among 8,877 older adults, 4 percent (N=287) reported low or very low food security levels. Those who identified as Black or African American and Hispanic or Latino were more likely to experience food insecurity compared to White individuals. The study found that merely surpassing the poverty threshold might not be sufficient to protect against food insecurity. It also underscored socioemotional support's protective role in older adults' food security. Social workers must recognize various factors influencing food security among older adults. Dry needling (DN) uses a monofilament needle to reduce pain and is performed by various healthcare professions. Due to the invasive needle puncture, adverse events (AEs) have been associated with DN. It is unclear, which AEs should be included in a risk statement for Informed Consent (IC). The purpose of this study was to identify which AEs should be included in a risk statement for IC. A three-round e-Delphi study was undertaken using a panel of DN experts. Expert inclusion criteria included: (1) ≥5 years practice performing DN and one of the following secondary criteria: (A) certification in DN; (B) completion of a manual therapy fellowship that included DN training; or (C) ≥1 publication involving the use of DN. Participants rated their level of agreement using a 4-point Likert scale. Consensus was defined as either: 1) ≥80% agreement; or 2) ≥70% and <80% agreement with median ≥3, interquartile range ≤1, and standard deviation ≤1. A total of 14 (28%) AEs achieved final consensus in Round 3 for inclusion on IC. Kendall's Coefficient (w) of agreement for Round 2 was 0.213 and improved to 0.349 after Round 3. Wilcoxon rank tests revealed statistically significant changes for 12 of the 50 AEs. Consensus was attained for 14 AEs for inclusion on IC. Evidence supports direct referral for imaging by physical therapists. Accuracy and self-efficacy for imaging decisions have not been investigated in entry-level doctor of physical therapy (DPT) students. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between entry-level DPT instruction and accuracy and self-efficacy for imaging referral due to acute knee trauma. A second purpose was to identify relationships between accuracy and self-efficacy. An online survey was sent via e-mail to program directors in accredited DPT programs in the United States with an invitation to forward the survey to DPT students. The survey captured demographic information and included five questions that assessed the respondent's ability to apply the Ottawa Knee Rules (OKR). Self-efficacy was assessed using the Physiotherapist Student Self-Efficacy (PSE) questionnaire, a self-rated 5-point Likert scaled tool. Of 240 surveys, DPT students who completed imaging coursework had greater accuracy and higher self-efficacy (68.0% correct (95% CI, 63.6–72.5), PSE = 3.67, P <.001) compared to students who had not (45.8% correct (95% CI, 40.8–50.7), PSE = 2.67, P <.001). The association of medical experts with politically left-leaning cities and states early in the COVID-19 pandemic may have exacerbated vaccine hesitancy in right-leaning states of the US. Criticism from outside experts violates rules of communication between social groups (i.e. an intergroup sensitivity effect), leading to rejection of messages promoting vaccine safety and efficacy. In two studies, we document the effects of shared geographical group membership for medical expert messages promoting vaccination. We also found evidence that satisfying conversational norms against intergroup criticism reduces message rejection. The organ shortage continues to present problems around the world including the United States. In response, some countries have switched from an opt-in organ donor registry to an opt-out registry. The United States currently utilizes an opt-in registry where an individual is not considered an organ donor until they register their intentions. In the current study, U.S. adults were randomly assigned to a 2 (message valence: promotional, refutational) x 2 (autonomy restoration postscript: present, not present) x 2 (social proof: high likes, low likes) posttest only control group design evaluating social media message regarding an opt-out organ donor registry for implementation in the U.S. Results revealed an interaction between message valence and autonomy on freedom threat perceptions toward the message. Consistent with psychological reactance theory, freedom threat perceptions were positively associated with reactance, which in turn was positively associated with an intention to sign a petition and call a representative to voice disapproval of the opt-out organ donor registry. This study examined how organizations may promote their employees' mental health in difficult times. Drawing from organizational crisis communication and organizational health promotion research, it proposed and tested a dual-process model that links leadership health support, an essential dimension of organizational health culture, with organizational leaders' crisis communication (i.e. use of ethical-base responses) and workers' self-care awareness and perceived stress in a crisis. Through a survey of 502 full-time U.S. employees conducted during COVID-19, we found that organizational leaders' use of ethical-base responses predicted employees' enhanced self-care awareness and decreased stress levels. Further, leadership health support provided a double-buffer effect to sustain employee mental health by directly bolstering employees' self-care awareness and organizational leaders' use of ethical-base responses. The findings of this study bridge the gaps in organizational health promotion and crisis communication literature and offer practical suggestions for organizations seeking to foster employees' mental health challenges during crises. Objectives: To examine physical therapist awareness and utilization of imaging referral privileges in the United States (US) and how it relates to direct access frequency. Methods: This study utilized survey data collected in 2020–2021 from US physical therapists. Subjects were asked about imaging referral jurisdictional authority in their state. Responses were analyzed for accuracy and compared to the level of jurisdictional authority and its impact on imaging referral. Analysis of imaging skills performance and imaging referral practices were compared to direct access frequency. Results: Only 42.0% of physical therapists practicing in states that allow imaging referral were aware of this privilege. Those practicing where imaging referral was allowed via state legislation were significantly more likely (p < 0.01) to be aware of this privilege (71.4%) compared to those granted by the state board (25.2%). Those aware of their imaging referral scope were more likely (p < 0.01) to practice imaging referral (44.5%) compared to those who were unaware (3.2%). Direct access frequency was positively associated with imaging skill performance and imaging referral practice (p < 0.01). Doctors of Physical Therapy, residency/fellowship-trained physical therapists, and board-certified physical therapists all reported practicing greater frequency of direct access (p < 0.01). Discussion/Conclusion: There is a striking lack of awareness of imaging privileges among physical therapists as influenced by the level of jurisdictional scope. These results suggest that the lack of awareness may have a dampening effect on diagnostic imaging referrals. Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) has seen increasing use in the prehospital environment over the last decade, primarily with the extended focused assessment with sonography in trauma (eFAST) exam. Previous studies have shown prehospital eFAST exams are feasible in the helicopter transport environment but have yet to demonstrate effects on clinical care. This retrospective case series identified 655 patients with blunt thoraco-abdominal trauma or concern for pneumothorax due to penetrating injury transported by a single helicopter EMS (HEMS) program over a two-year period after introducing POCUS. Of those patients, 258 received prehospital ultrasound which was reported to change clinical care in seven cases (2.7%, 95%-CI [1.1–5.5]). This was primarily through preventing unnecessary needle thoracostomy and initiating blood transfusion for treatment of hemorrhagic shock in cases where the degree of shock was unclear due to inconsistent vital signs. People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are vulnerable to COVID-19 transmission due to substance use, congregate living conditions, and underlying medical conditions. Yet, little is known about factors impacting drug use disorder among PEH during COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to identify correlates associated with substance use disorder among PEH, both those who were diagnosed with COVID-19 and those who tested negative or never tested. A cross-sectional, structured survey was administered to PEH (N = 102) who were recruited from sheltered and unsheltered settings. Descriptive analysis, t-tests, Fisher's exact test or chi-squared test, and bivariate and multiple linear regression were conducted. PEH with a COVID-19 diagnosis included male gender, and Latino race/ethnicity (p <.05). Moreover, substance use disorder scores (p -.037) and days on the street were negatively associated with COVID-19 (p <.001). Multivariable analyses revealed a significant positive relationship between days slept on the street and substance use disorder (p <.001), and a significant negative relationship with alcohol use (p <.05); COVID-19 remained negatively associated with substance use disorder, but it was not significant. This study provides evidence about correlates of drug use disorder among PEH. More studies are needed to understand successful individual and system-level strategies for reducing drug-related problems during COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the prevalence and negative outcomes associated with simultaneous alcohol and cannabis use (i.e., marijuana [SAM] use, i.e., so that the effects of both alcohol and cannabis overlap) among college students, there is no comprehensive measure of SAM use, with past research relying on single items. The present study aimed to develop the Alcohol and Cannabis Simultaneous Use Scale (ACSUS), a comprehensive self-report measure of SAM use frequency, quantity, and problems in college students. College students at two Midwestern universities who used alcohol and cannabis (Study 1: N = 534; Mean age = 19; 71% female; 88% White; Study 2: N = 258; Mean age = 21; 81% female; 85% White) completed the newly developed ACSUS. Exploratory factor analysis (Study 1) revealed that the ACSUS fits best with 9-items representing two factors: Factor 1 measures frequency and quantity of SAM use and Factor 2 measures associated problems with SAM use. Confirmatory factor analysis (Study 2) supported the two-factor structure of the ACSUS, which was positively associated with measures of alcohol use, cannabis use, simultaneous use motives, and impulsivity. Purpose. The aim of this preliminary study was to compare the effects of variations in task demands on: (a) language productivity in sentences categorised into stuttered vs. non-stuttered sentences; (b) syntactic complexity in stuttered vs. non-stuttered sentence categories, and (c) stuttering and typical disfluencies in school-age children who stutter (CWS). Language Sample Analysis (LSA) was conducted on samples from three tasks – Conversation, fable retell, and critical thinking based on the fables. Methods. Participants were 14 CWS categorised into younger (9 to 12-year-olds, n = 8) and older age groups (13 to 15-year-olds, n = 6). The Computerized Language ANalysis program was used to conduct language and disfluency analyses. Repeated measures analysis of variance and nonparametric statistical analyses were used to investigate: (a) Language productivity in total number of words and sentences by task and sentence category; (b) Syntactic complexity at the word- (use of metacognitive verbs), phrase- (use of verb phrases), and utterance (Mean Length of Utterances in words, MLUw) levels by task and sentence category; and (c) Disfluencies measured using % stuttered syllables (%SS) and % typical disfluencies (%TD). Results and Conclusions. Task effects in language productivity did not differ by sentence category and suggested limited influences of propositionality and volubility in stuttering. In contrast, higher syntactic complexity was obtained in the stuttered compared to non-stuttered sentences at the word, phrase, and utterance levels and it was the same task – conversation, that elicited the effect. Additionally, variations in task demands did not result in significant differences in %SS. Participation in outdoor sports increases exposure to ultraviolet radiation, necessitating mitigation through sunscreen use. This prospective study examined the effects of sport, setting (practice vs. competition), gender, age and geographic location on sunscreen use and education among youth athletes in various sports. Six hundred and twelve athletes ≤18 years old completed an online survey on sunscreen education and use during competitions and practices. Regardless of sport, reported sunscreen use was higher during practices than competition (p < 0.0001). Sunscreen was used most by swimmers/divers (odds ratio: OR ≥ 1.9, p < 0.001) and least by American football players (OR ≤ 0.57, p ≤ 0.001). Coaches mentioned sunscreen use the most in track and field (OR 1.84, p = 0.001) and the least in American football (OR 0.67, p = 0.03). Athletes used sunscreen more if they were female (OR ≥ 1.9 1.38, p ≤ 0.06) and younger (age OR ≤ 0.88, p < 0.001). This study examined socio-demographic characteristics and COVID-19 experiences as concurrent predictors of perceived familial and friend social support, social media use, and socio-emotional motives for electronic communication during the COVID-19 pandemic among college students. Participants were 619 emerging adults (18–29-year-olds) currently enrolled at, or recently graduated from, a U.S.-based college or university (Mean age = 21.8, SD = 2.2; 64% female; 60% Non-Hispanic White). Online surveys were administered between May and June 2020. A path analysis model was conducted to examine the concurrent associations between socio-demographic factors, COVID-19-related experiences, social media/electronic engagement, and perceived social support. Findings indicated significant differences in perceived social support, social media use, and socio-emotional motives for electronic communication as a function of gender, race, sexual orientation, first-generation status, and relationship status. Our findings highlight the role of both individual and situational differences in interpersonal functioning and demonstrate how college students differently engaged with social media for socio-emotional purposes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Active service members and Veterans with a combat-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) are four times more likely to attempt suicide than those without a TBI. TBIs are the signature injuries of the Post-9/11 conflicts and Combat Veterans (i.e., current and former service members who deployed in support of a combat mission) with these injuries are entitled to receive the Purple Heart medal. However, potentially tens of thousands of Combat Veterans did not receive, or were denied the Purple Heart during the first decade of the Global War on Terrorism because a TBI was not documented during the deployment. To our knowledge, this is the first study to explore the meaning of the Purple Heart and examine the impact of the Purple Heart on Army Combat Veterans with a combat-related TBI. Findings from this mixed methods study revealed that not receiving the Purple Heart is associated with increased suicide risk and lower quality of life after a brain injury. Additionally, thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, and perceived military institutional betrayal are associated with increased suicide risk in Army Combat Veterans with a TBI. This study examined how Asian and Asian American grandparent–grandchild relationships related to ethnic identity in the context of COVID-19-related racial discrimination. Asian and Asian American grandchildren (N = 102) answered questions about discrimination, ethnic identification, grandparent–grandchild relationships, and ethnic behaviors. There was no significant relationship between exposure to discrimination and strength of ethnic identity, but strength of ethnic identity was a significant predictor of frequency of synchronous contact with grandparents and ethnic behaviors. Findings suggest that stronger ethnic identities in Asian and Asian American undergraduate students could be related to better relationships with their grandparents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Immigrants comprise a sizable proportion (15%) of the population living in the United States (U.S.). Given these proportions, it is imperative that we understand immigrant experiences of well-being and stress toward improved well-being and integration. To examine the experiences of first- and second-generation immigrants using a comparative approach, we utilized data from two surveys collected under Trump (n = 490) and Biden (n = 306) administrations. Both studies employed non-probability quota and convenience sampling techniques. Questions about experiences of stress (PSS-4), discrimination (Everyday Discrimination Scale), resilience (Brief Resilience Scale), border stress (Border Community and Immigration Stress Scale), immigration policies (general questions) were included in the surveys. Each study sample included diverse racial groups across both immigrant generations. We report frequencies, descriptive statistics, and ANOVAs/post hoc test results. Findings highlight that levels of both stress and discrimination among non-White participants under the Trump administration were significantly higher than those of White participants, though neither relationship was significant under the Biden administration. Further, White participants exhibited higher resilience under the Trump administration, but not under the Biden administration. To our knowledge, this is the first study to comparatively examine immigrant experiences under the two most recent federal administrations. This study is seminal in highlighting discussions and making policy recommendations to limit immigrant exclusion, curtail exclusionary policies regarding travel bans, and improve pathways to citizenship, enhancing immigrant integration in the U.S. Roles of social workers in supporting immigrant communities and pathways for future research with immigrants are discussed. The purpose of this paper is to explore 10-year trends in the use of Assistive Technology (AT). Using 2006 and 2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data, univariate analysis were performed, and the rate of change was calculated. In both 2006 and 2015 data, a higher per cent of Blacks were using AT compared to Whites and Hispanics (p <.001); however, the rate of increase indicate that Blacks had the lowest per cent change (23.9%) compared to Whites (26.8%) and Hispanics (27.3%). Results indicated that AT use is statistically more prevalent in women, individuals who are not married (e.g. divorce, widowed, separated), the veteran population, lower educational attainment levels (e.g. some high school or less), lower income levels, the ageing population, unemployed (e.g. out of work, retired, unable to work) and individuals with limited functioning because of a disability. Similarly, individuals who have healthcare coverage, and individuals with concerns with medical costs used AT more. Social connectedness and related relational constructs can facilitate recovery in adults with substance use disorder (SUD). To date, there is a lack of research differentiating music therapy interventions as measured by the group relationship among peers within an inpatient detoxification setting for adults with SUD. The purpose of this study was to compare three commonly used group music therapy interventions in adults with SUD by measuring the group relationship Participants (N = 103) were adults with SUD hospitalized on an inpatient detoxification unit. The researcher cluster-randomized participants to one of three single-session group music therapy conditions: lyric analysis (LA), recreational music therapy (RMT), or songwriting (SW). Participants completed pre- and posttest measures of the group relationship. All conditions had favorable mean group relationship changes from pre- to posttest. There were significant between-group differences in the positive bonding relationship and positive working relationship subscales between the SW and RMT conditions. There was a significant between-group difference in the negative relationship scale between the RMT and both the LA and SW conditions. Despite the temporal limitations of single-session therapy common on detoxification units, this study has clinical implications because of the relevance of social connectedness and group relationships among adults with SUD. As the SW condition outperformed the RMT condition in all three group relationship subscales and has support regarding other SUD-related constructs, SW may constitute an ideal intervention in adult detoxification settings. Wang and Conway (2006, Autobiographical memory, self, and culture. In L.-G. Nilsson, & N. Ohta (Eds.), Memory and society: Psychological perspectives (pp. 9–27). Psychology Press) posit that remembering takes place in a culturally modulated self-memory system in which working self-goals are shaped by society and, in turn, influence the encoding and construction of memories in a culturally canonical fashion. The current research examined the self-goal of competence, which manifests through self-enhancement versus self-improvement motivations, in influencing remembering in different cultural contexts. We conducted two cross-cultural studies to examine memories for personal successes and failures (Study 1) and autobiographical and vicarious experiences (Study 2) in connection with individuals' positive self-views. European Americans recalled a greater number of success than failure memories (Study 1) and US participants recalled a greater number of autobiographical than vicarious memories (Study 2), which was further associated with positive self-views at the individual level. In contrast, Asian (Study 1) and Chinese participants (Study 2) recalled even-handedly the different types of memories, and the memory retrieval was unrelated to individuals' self-views. This paper addresses the experiences of US child welfare professionals during the COVID pandemic. Using an online survey, we report on a convenience sample of 444 child welfare workers. The majority reported receiving adequate guidance on staying safe; 86.3% were given access to face masks. Workers reported 75.8% of clients used masks; 10.7% reported contracting COVID through work. About 80% worried that child clients were more at-risk. Workers who felt the most supported and least at-risk were those with stay-at-home orders. This study examined whether firefighters who were satisfied with their romantic relationships experienced lower severities of commonly reported mental health symptoms compared to firefighters who were dissatisfied with their relationships. The sample included 200 firefighters (97% male; Mage = 41.4, SD = 9.3) currently married or living with a romantic partner who completed self-report measures via online survey. An established cutoff score of 13.5 (Couples Satisfaction Index-4) was used to define groups. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between social factors of stigma and loneliness, in rural communities, that may differ in people with self-reported opioid use disorder (OUD) and those without self-reported OUD. The study's purpose also includes an exploration of the relationships between knowledge and stigma. A cross-sectional descriptive study via survey methods was used. A convenience sample was recruited from Southern Indiana (IN) rural counties with zip codes that had some of the highest opioid use and reported overdoses in IN. Data were analyzed using logistic regression and mean/median difference-based statistics. The odds of having an OUD were significantly lower for persons who endorsed more self-stigmatization for illicit opioid use. Having less than a high school education was associated with a statistically significant, 8.5 times increase in the likelihood that rural participants would report having symptoms consistent with an OUD diagnosis. The present study advances the understanding of rural perceptions of and experiences with OUD and stigma-related HIV outbreaks and psychosocial factors which differentiate persons reporting OUD consistent symptoms. Objective: Although diabetes is one of the leading causes of death among Korean Americans, the levels and predictors of diabetes knowledge in this group have not been sufficiently reported. This study aimed to (1) describe the level of diabetes knowledge of Korean immigrant women in the U.S. and (2) examine whether there is an interaction effect between social support and education on diabetes knowledge. Design: This study conducted a cross-sectional survey design. The sample included 227 Korean immigrant women living in the southeast region of the U.S. The fourteen items of the Diabetes Knowledge Test were used to assess the diabetes knowledge level of Korean American women. A multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the interaction effect between social support and education on diabetes knowledge. Results: Only 6% of the participants presented a good diabetes knowledge level, 12.5% had a poor level, and the majority (81.5%) had a moderate level. We found a significant interaction effect between social support and education on diabetes knowledge. The highest diabetes knowledge was observed when individuals with a lower education level had higher social support. Conclusion: Future health practices and policies may focus on increasing knowledge among Korean American women with lower education levels and lower social support. Objective: US Hispanics have several health disparities, greater tobacco/nicotine-related illnesses, lower access to smoking cessation, and lower rates of cessation. Understanding cultural constructs linked to tobacco/nicotine use may provide a greater understanding of future cultural adaptations of cessation interventions. This study used a multidimensional acculturation framework, with cultural practices, identity, and values, to test links between measures of acculturation stress, multidimensional acculturation (language-based enculturation and acculturation, cultural identity, familism), and tobacco/nicotine use, and interactions with gender. Design: Participants were 391 adult Latin American immigrants (69% women); 12% self-reported tobacco/nicotine use in the past six months. Results: Path analysis showed acculturative stress, β =.16, and acculturation, β =.20, were positively related to tobacco/nicotine use. Enculturation, familism, and Hispanic cultural identity were not related to tobacco/nicotine use. There were no significant acculturation by enculturation or gender interactions, but women were less likely to use tobacco/nicotine than men, β = −.36. Conclusion: Findings suggest that tobacco/nicotine cessation interventions for Latino immigrants may be enhanced with an emphasis on the mitigation of acculturative stress, attention to the adoption of US cultural practices, and gender. This study examined associations between perceived discrimination, treatment adherence self-efficacy, and depressive symptoms among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the Southern United States. Cross-sectional survey data were collected from 402 PLHIV who self-reported on interpersonal discrimination experiences based on HIV status, sexuality, gender, income, and living condition. Participants also reported on adherence self-efficacy and depressive symptoms. We employed K-means clustering to identify groups based on discrimination experiences, and logistic regressions to examine group differences on adherence self-efficacy and depressive symptoms. Results suggested three groups: a cluster with high perceived discrimination across all identities/conditions (n = 41; 11%; Cluster 1); a cluster with high perceived discrimination based on HIV status, income, and living condition (n = 49; 13%; Cluster 2); and a cluster with low perceived discrimination across all identities/conditions (n = 288; 76%; Cluster 3). Compared to Cluster 3, Cluster 1 and 2 had 2.22 times (p =.037) and 3.98 times (p<.001) greater odds of reporting depressive symptoms. Compared to Cluster 3, Cluster 2 had 3.40 times (p =.003) greater odds of reporting lower adherence self-efficacy. Findings demonstrate the need for individual-level support for PLHIV with discrimination histories, and broader efforts to end the stigma, discrimination, and marginalization of PLHIV based on HIV status and other characteristics. Shame-proneness refers to one's dispositional tendency to experience shame across a variety of situations. Shame-proneness is significantly related to a wide range of mental health disorders including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, substance abuse, and more. Attachment theory and interpersonal neurobiology suggest that secure attachment protects against shame-proneness, whereas insecure attachment contributes to shame-proneness. However, there is scant empirical research exploring this relationship. This study explored childhood attachment with primary caregivers as a predictor of shame-proneness in adulthood. A sample of 340 adults, U.S. residents aged 18 and over, was recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk), an online crowdsourcing platform. Multiple regression analyses revealed that certain insecure attachment styles, specifically anxiety and disorganization, significantly related to shame-proneness, whereas avoidance did not. Secure attachment was negatively related to shame-proneness, but the relationship was statistically insignificant. Social workers and other mental health professionals can benefit from an increased understanding of the relationship between childhood attachment and shame-proneness that this study provides. Background: Individuals with disabilities are more likely to use substances and have cardiovascular disease (CVD) than individuals without disabilities. CVD is associated with drug use, which increases the risk for poor CVD outcomes. Our aim was to test the association between CVD and lifetime drug use (LDU) among those with vision loss (VL) and/or hearing loss (HL) and assess if disability type moderated this association. Methods: Multivariable logistic regression incorporating complex survey design was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (AOR) using data from NHANES 2013–2018. Results: Although not quite statistically significant (p ≥.05), the magnitude of effect modification was large. The effect was positive among those with VL (AOR = 1.55, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.73, 3.30) or HL (AOR = 1.69, 95% CI = 0.56, 5.11), but among those with both CVD was associated with 75% lower odds of LDU (AOR = 0.25, 95% CI = 0.06, 1.05). After adjusting for multiple comparisons, the CVD effect was significantly different between those with VL versus both VL and HL (p <.05), and nearly significantly different between those with HL versus both (p ≥.05). This study examined the frequency of the most demanding scenarios (MDS) during official soccer matches using rolling averages over 1, 5, and 10 min. Forty-two Under-19 players from different positions (central defenders, full-backs, central midfielders, wide midfielders, offensive midfielders, and forwards) were monitored across 27 matches using GPS to track distance covered, high-speed running, sprint distance, accelerations, and decelerations. Intensity thresholds were established based on percentiles (0–25, 25–50, 50–75, 75–100, and ≥100). The main findings suggest that: (i) Peak Demands occur in less than 1% of all time windows and variables for all positions; (ii) Most efforts occur below peak demands, with around 95% for high-speed running and sprint distance, and 85% for accelerations, decelerations, and total distance; (iii) Significant differences in intensity distributions were found between positions, particularly at medium-low and high intensities. Regarding training prescription, relying solely on MDS may be limited, highlighting the need to supplement MDS with other metrics for a comprehensive understanding of match demands. This approach ensures better-informed training programs for soccer players. Highlights: The occurrence of peak demand events during soccer matches is infrequent. Therefore, understanding the frequency of efforts below the intensity threshold of the most demanding passages for each playing position and across various analysed variables and periods is of utmost importance. Without standard guidelines, there is a critical need to examine anal cancer screening uptake in the South which has the highest HIV incidence in the U.S. We identified factors associated with screening among men living with HIV (MLHIV) at a large academic HIV outpatient clinic in Alabama. Relationships between sociodemographic, clinical, sexual risk characteristics and screening were examined using T-tests, Fisher's exact, Chi-square, and logistic regression analyses. Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (AOR) were computed to estimate the odds of screening. Among 1,114 men, 52% had received annual anal cytology (pap) screening. Men who were screened were more likely to have multiple sexual partners compared to men who were not screened (22.8% vs. 14.8%, p = 0.002). Among men with one partner, the youngest were almost five times more likely to be screened compared to middle-aged men (AOR = 4.93, 95% CI: 2.34–10.39). Heterosexual men had lower odds and men who reported unprotected anal sex had higher odds of screening. Our findings suggest a racial disparity, with older black MLHIV being the least likely to be screened. In the South, MLHIV who are older, black, heterosexual, or live in high social vulnerability counties may be less likely to receive annual anal cancer screening. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the impact of State and Trait anxiety and dietary intake on college students' gastrointestinal symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 455 students, aged 18–23, from two residential colleges in the midwestern United States participated in the study during April 2021. An online questionnaire that included the National Cancer Institute Dietary Screener, State-Trait Inventory for Cognitive and Somatic Anxiety, and an adapted version of the Gastrointestinal Symptoms Questionnaire was used. Stepwise multiple regression analyses and Spearman rho correlation coefficients were used to analyze the data. High rates of State-somatic, State-cognitive, and Trait-somatic anxiety were present in our study population. These anxiety subscales and dietary intake predicted 26% and 3.8% of the GI symptoms variance, respectively. State-anxiety and Trait-somatic anxiety are large factors in predicting GI symptoms compared to dietary intake. College students could seek anxiety-reducing techniques to ease GI symptoms. Although fibromyalgia is a widespread chronic pain condition where 90 percent of patients are women, they are underrepresented in Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs). We aim to describe the willingness to participate, assess different factors, and explore the impact of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics on perceived barriers to trial participation. This is a cross-sectional survey targeting women with fibromyalgia. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were performed. Of the 436 women with fibromyalgia, 56 percent were very likely to participate in RCTs. Minorities expressed less interest than non-minorities, while higher pain scores, previous participation, and younger patients reported a higher interest. Barriers significantly associated with a reduced willingness were: the participant's perception (side effects, distance, potential negative impact), the center (reputation), the trial protocol (number of visits, placebo), and trial awareness by their physician. In a multivariate analysis, older age, low education, lower income, and higher pain scores were associated with perceived barriers to RCT participation. Despite the high interest to participate, factors such as side effects, the center's distance, number of visits, placebo treatments, and the institution's reputation must be considered in clinical trials for women with fibromyalgia. As adolescents turn to online resources for health information, obstetricians and gynaecologists can play an active role in creating evidence-based resources for sexual health education. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of a sexual health education website on adolescent girls' reproductive health knowledge and self-efficacy. It took the form of a prospective study among girls aged 14–18 in a rural area of the USA. Informed consent and parental consent were obtained. Participants completed a pre-test survey containing a 20 question validated Reproductive Health Knowledge Index (RHKI) and six self-efficacy questions. They then completed the website curriculum (), followed by a post-test survey containing RHKI and same self-efficacy questions. Thirty-three girls completed the study with an average age of 16.42 (SD 1.09). Ten (30.3%) reported never having received sexual health education in school. Overall mean RHKI score improved from pre-test to post-test (87.67 SD 6.35 vs 90.82 SD 7.45, p = 0.012). Change in knowledge score ranged from −16.25 to+19.17 with a mean increase of+3.14 (SD 6.77). The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Learn About Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) YouTube playlist educates the public on diagnosing, treating, and managing COPD. Despite its potential benefits, it is unknown if users with inadequate health literacy will likely understand and apply the information described in these videos. Assess the Learn About COPD playlist's readability, actionability, and understandability. Central tendency statistics were computed to describe the meta-data of 28 videos available as of April 2023. Assessments included the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool for Audiovisual Materials (PEMAT-AV), Accessible Health IT for Limited-Literacy Populations Checklist (LLPC), and the Modified Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-Clear Communication Index (CCI) for audiovisual materials. Playlist videos received an average of over 2,000 views (Mdn = 2,220, IQR = 496–8336), with very few "likes" (Mdn = 13, IQR = 1–48 "likes"). PEMAT-understandability (Mdn = 81.81%, IQR = 80–97.72%) and LLPC (Mdn = 87.50%, IQR = 75–93.75%) scores were high (above 80%). However, the modified CDC-CCI median score was 57.14% (IQR = 42.86–75%), and the median PEMAT-actionability score was 50% (IQR = 0–66.67%). The playlist earned passing understandability, acceptability, and usability scores but scored poorly on actionability and communication clarity. We sought to describe prehospital ultrasound (PHUS) use and trends in PHUS utilization over time using a national database. Using the 2018 – 2021 National Emergency Medical Services Information System databases, we identified those EMS activations where PHUS was performed. We evaluated the association between year and number of PHUS exams performed using univariable and multivariable regression analysis. Analysis was performed on the overall group and various subgroups. In total, there were 148,709,000 EMS activations by 13,899 agencies over the 4 years. Of these, 3,291 unique activations (0.002%) involved PHUS, performed by 71 EMS agencies (0.5%). The annual rate of ultrasound evaluations per 1 million EMS activations significantly increased over the study period: 5.2 in 2018, 14.8 in 2019, 18.6 in 2020, and 38.9 in 2021 (p < 0.01). The number of agencies performing PHUS each year increased over the study period from 11 in 2018 to 54 in 2021 (p < 0.05). Each year after 2018 had an increased odds of PHUS use demonstrated with logistic regression (p < 0.01). PHUS was used in each US census region, and paramedics performed most of the PHUS exams (75.5%). We identified 1,060 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, 820 trauma, and 427 respiratory PHUS cases. These three cohorts accounted for 70.1% of all PHUS cases. Prehospital ultrasound use in the United States increased significantly over the study period, but remains exceedingly rare. Background: The outcome of clinical treatment for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) is frequently the primary concern. Aim: For the convenient prediction of reference prognosis outcomes in patients with ISSNHL. Materials and methods: Patients diagnosed with ISSNHL who were admitted to the otorhinolaryngology ward of Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2020 to December 2023 were included. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to identify independent prognostic factors for the treatment outcome of ISSNHL, which were subsequently used to develop nomograms. Discrimination, calibration, and clinical utility were assessed to evaluate the performance of the ISSNHL nomograms. Results: 371 ISSNHL patients were enrolled in this study. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that history of deafness, aural fullness, time of onset, and age were independent prognostic factors for ISSNHL patients, with statistically significant regression coefficients. Predictive nomograms were developed with excellent discrimination, calibration, and clinical value. Conclusions: Leveraging data from ISSNHL patients, we developed a predictive nomogram to assess prognostic factors upon admission. This nomogram facilitates clinicians in approximating the likelihood of favorable prognosis. Problem: One in four American adults have a disability, which makes people with disabilities the largest minority group in the United States (U.S.). Chronic diseases are prevalent within this population, which faces myriad barriers that limit access to healthcare and create significant health care disparities. Yet, disability awareness programs are limited in U.S. medical schools and graduates report a sense of unpreparedness to care for this population. Intervention: Come Roll with Me (CRWM) was implemented as an interprofessional, preclinical experience to provide medical and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students an opportunity to engage with wheelchair users and one another. Students rotated through four stations with a licensed physical therapist and wheelchair user facilitator. Stations included (1) manual wheelchair self-propulsion, (2) accessible parking, (3) transfers, and (4) open dialog on barriers to healthcare led by the wheelchair user. Context: This study sought to assess the impact of CRWM on students' understanding of the barriers and health disparities faced by individuals with disabilities. Assessment was conducted using course evaluations, thematic analysis of student reflection essays and a focus group with the wheelchair user facilitators to determine if CRWM met pre-implementation program goals and objectives, including the Interprofessional Educational Collaborative (IPEC) core competencies. Impact: Student reflections from both disciplines indicated that learners were able to identify a variety of barriers faced by people with disabilities and prioritize methods to mitigate these factors. Approximately 91% of medical students agreed or strongly agreed that CRWM was effective in their learning on course evaluations. Wheelchair user facilitators noted three important outcomes of CRWM: educating, teaming, and impact on students. Lesson Learned: Come Roll with Me is a robust educational activity, as evidenced by the program meeting all goals and objectives as well as (IPEC) core competencies. It provides students a unique opportunity to learn about disability from another profession and wheelchair users. Emerging communication technologies have seen the proliferation of misleading claims, untruthful narratives, and conspiracies. To understand how people perceive and act on different types of misinformation, this study examines how health misinformation varying in falsity (fabrication versus misuse) and evidence type (statistical versus narrative) affects sharing and verification intentions. Using COVID-19 vaccines as cases, the results from an online experiment showed that misused misinformation was perceived as less false than fabricated misinformation and resulted in higher sharing intentions for the issue of vaccine efficacy. Misinformation with narrative evidence, as compared to that with statistical evidence, was perceived as less false and led to lower verification intentions. These findings can be explained by psychological processes such as counterarguing and narrative engagement. Our results can help practitioners develop dedicated misinformation literacy programs. This study analyzed the content, visual features, and audience engagement data of Instagram posts from two mental health organizations over one year (N = 725). For content features, mental health literacy and communicative strategies were examined. Posts that promoted knowledge of mental disorders and treatments, used information and community strategy were more likely to receive higher audience engagement. Visual features of demographic segments, visual composition, and visual framing topics were analyzed. Images that covered an unspecific population, used illustrated images, and focused on anti-stigma topical frames obtained more engagement. Research with youth has demonstrated that a hopeful mind-set is associated with resilience and well-being and is influenced by our supportive caregivers and adults. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youth experience a very high frequency of adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and may lack supportive caregivers throughout their foster care experience. This study tests the theory that child welfare caseworkers are a source of hope among LGB youth in foster care. Quantitative analysis was used to examine differences in ACE exposure and differences in the caseworker as a source of hope. Racial disparities in hospice use are a longstanding concern in the U.S. Asian Americans are among the least likely to receive hospice care and to be included in studies on this topic. This study examined the knowledge, attitudes, and preferences related to hospice care among older Chinese immigrants and associated factors. A sample of 262 Chinese immigrants age 60+ was recruited from six older adult centers in NYC. In-person interviews were conducted in Mandarin and Cantonese. Non-English-speaking older Chinese immigrants had very limited knowledge about hospice care. Only 26% of respondents had heard of hospice, and a few could correctly define any components. After receiving a comprehensive definition of hospice care, study participants expressed a positive attitude and a strong willingness to use hospice if near the end of life. Notably, some respondents still held misconceptions about hospice and were less positive in their attitude and preference for hospice care. These findings underscore the necessity for clear and accessible information about hospice among this population throughout the trajectory from good health to end of life. Graduate students can be susceptible to exhaustion and burnout. The primary aim of this study was to determine the proportion of time occupational therapy doctoral (OTD) students spend engaged in work, daily living tasks, recreation, and rest. The Occupational Questionnaire was distributed to OTD students. OTD students spent most of their time (38–44%) engaged in work. The percentage of time spent engaged in work by OTD students is approximately double the time they spent in the areas of rest, daily living tasks, or recreation. Mobile health (mHealth) technology has increased dramatically in the wake of the pandemic. Less research has focused on people with mobility impairing (PMI) disabilities. This study determined the prevalence of mHealth use among PMI adults during the COVID-19 escalation and examines demographic, health and COVID-19 concerns correlates. PMI adults (N = 304) completed an online survey investigating mHealth use and COVID-19 concerns related to food access in June of 2020. Smartphone and mHealth use were measured with an adapted version of the survey used in the Pew Internet & American Life project. Descriptive and multivariable analyses were conducted to determine associations of demographics, health status, and COVID-19 concerns with mHealth use. About two-thirds (N = 201) of the sample were mHealth users (owned a smartphone and engaged in health-promoting behaviors with the smartphone; e.g., sought online information, tracked health behaviors, used patient portals). Having hypertension was associated with higher mHealth use, and having higher COVID-19 concerns about food access was associated with higher mHealth use. Those who used mHealth were also more engaged with smartphone apps for communication, services, and entertainment. Only the association between educational attainment and mHealth use remained significant after adjusting for other covariates in multivariable logistic regression models. PMIs continue to need support in the use of mHealth technology to help maximize access to potentially important tools for rehabilitation and health management. There is a need to continue to investigate mHealth and its applications for people with disabilities. Many people with mobility impairing disabilities may be missing opportunities for mHealth rehabilitation and healthcare. COVID-19 has widened existing gaps in access and use of mHealth technology among people with mobility impairing disabilities. Focused education is needed to help people with disabilities exploit the full range of services of their smartphones to increase access to care, social connectivity, and other important goods and services to enhance rehabilitation and health management. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of sleep disturbances in adults seeking physical therapy services. Participants were issued an electronic survey to provide demographic information and the following questionnaires: Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Sleep Hygiene Index (SHI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), STOP-BANG (obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) risk), and restless leg syndrome (RLS) risk. Percentages were calculated to describe prevalence of sleep disturbances, and Spearman's correlations were used to identify associations between pain and sleep questionnaires. Eighty-eight participants (47.9 ± 15.8 years, 68 females) completed the survey. Seventy-eight percent (n = 69) scored >5 on the PSQI; 32% (n = 28) scored ≥10 on the ESS; 52% (n = 46) scored ≥16 on the SHI; 51% (n = 45) scored ≥10 on the ISI; 28% (n = 25) had intermediate or high risk of OSA; and 40% (n = 35) indicated possible RLS. Pain level was significantly associated with PSQI (r(86) = 0.277, p =.009) and ISI (r(86) = 0.268, p =.012). There was a higher prevalence of sleep disturbances in adults seeking physical therapy services than in the general population. Increased pain severity was associated with poorer sleep quality and increased insomnia symptoms. This study highlights the need to screen patients for sleep disturbances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and suboptimal vaccine uptake rates are pressing public health challenges. Vaccine hesitancy has been observed for different vaccines. For COVID-19 vaccines, multiple factors influence vaccine uptake in the U.S. including political ideology. A more nuanced understanding of the factors influencing COVID-19 vaccine uptake within political parties is needed. This study assesses the relationship between known vaccine hesitancy factors and vaccine uptake within two major political parties. Data from 804 U.S. participants in an online survey from June 2021 was used to assess the association between COVID-19 vaccine uptake (no dose vs. any dose) and categories of factors thought to influence vaccine uptake (sociodemographic variables, COVID-19 disease and vaccine belief variables, belief in COVID-19 prevention behavior variables, and social network features variables) for Republicans and Democrats using bivariate and multivariate regression. 65.4% of the sample reported having received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine (22.6% Republican and 52.1% Democrat). In the total sample bivariate model, Democrat participants had significantly greater odds of having received a dose of the vaccine as compared to Republican participants (OR = 2.51, 95%CI = 1.73–3.64). In adjusted models, the speed of vaccine development was negatively associated with vaccine uptake for both Republicans (aOR = 0.18, 95%CI = 0.06–0.57) and Democrats (aOR = 0.40, 95%CI = 0.19–0.86), as was concern about side effects from the vaccine (Republicans: aOR = 0.15; 95%CI = 0.05–0.47; Democrats: aOR = 0.14, 95%CI = 0.06–0.31). COVID-19 vaccine uptake among Republicans, but not Democrats, was associated with belief that the vaccine prevents COVID-19 (aOR = 3.29, 95%CI = 1.29–8.37) and belief about friends' vaccine intentions (aOR = 6.19, 95%CI = 2.39–16.05). There were no significant factors unique to Democrats. Concerns about aspects of COVID-19 vaccine safety for both political groups suggest that vaccine advocacy interventions should universally address these factors. However, Republican beliefs in vaccine efficacy and in friends' vaccine intentions suggest a need for Republican-specific messaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
