Many academic libraries rely on a student workforce for everyday operations, interacting with patrons, and assistance with larger projects. Training these students for such multifaceted and customer-service-focused positions can be a challenge. This article traces an overhaul of training procedures made during the transition to a centralized, services desk workflow. All aspects of training a large student workforce, from planning and presentation to assessment, are outlined. Interactive group sessions and peer-to-peer reinforcement of procedures have proven to be most effective in training student workers for varied roles in an academic library. Implementation of Tier 2 or supplemental reading intervention for students who struggle with reading in elementary schools is a nearly universal practice in the United States. Resources exist for assisting schools with selecting evidence-based interventions. However, there are many more explicit and implicit decisions that schools make when implementing evidence-based intervention that may or may not impact the effectiveness of the intervention. In this literature synthesis, we aggregate the decisions made in effective Tier 2 reading interventions to help students improve their reading skills. These decisions include identifying which students would most benefit from specific interventions, how long to schedule intervention time, how to schedule staffing, the types of professional learning supports needed, and decisions based on progress monitoring. Though employment outside of regular daytime business hours has remained high since the 1990s, trends in nonstandard employment schedules over the life course and across households remain under-examined. The consequences of nonstandard scheduling extend to workers, their spouse, and children, urging greater attention to the distribution of nonstandard schedules at the couple-level. Using all three waves of the National Survey of Families and Households, this article examines the prevalence, persistence and sociodemographic patterns of rotating and night employment at the couple-level, following 913 married couples in the United States as they aged from the late 1980s to early 2000s. Though aging reduced the likelihood that couples had one or both spouses working nonstandard hours, roughly one-third of couples with nonstandard scheduling continued to experience nonstandard schedules during the subsequent observation period. Nonstandard schedules were stratified by education and race/ethnicity. This stratification persisted as couples aged, even after controlling for prior work schedules. Findings suggest that disadvantaged couples remain disproportionately exposed to schedules associated with negative outcomes for family well-being across the life course. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are many benefits of building information modeling (BIM) to the construction industry when compared to the traditional approach to design and construction. To properly prepare students, many schools are introducing BIM in their coursework as a response to the current and future needs of the construction industry. The aim of this research was to evaluate the current implementation of BIM and to identify trends in the teaching of BIM in architecture and construction academic programs. A survey that investigated the implementation of BIM into accredited programs in architecture and construction education was sent to architecture and construction schools in the U.S. The survey results indicated that most architecture and construction schools either have an interest in or have already implemented BIM into their curriculum. The majority of the schools expected students to have a basic knowledge of BIM upon graduation; perceived BIM as important to industry; and planned to fully integrate BIM into their curriculum. The results show that more architecture than construction schools have implemented BIM into their curriculum. Construction schools were more likely to use four-dimensional (4D) and five-dimensional (5D) models in teaching construction scheduling and estimating when compared to architecture schools. Drawing on archival sources from the BBC Written Archives Centre, including programming and scheduling policy files and on the Radio Times television edition, this article seeks to contribute to historical work on the way Anglophone cultures interacted in the early days of television broadcasting. The influence of American programming and culture has generally been assumed to begin with the introduction of commercial television in 1955. This article notes the interactions of the BBC and its transatlantic cousins, then surveys the way America was integrated into the schedules (including both BBC productions and, more significantly, American-produced films and series). Placing these in the context of British cultural strength in the English-speaking world, it argues that rather than Americanising viewers, it reinforced the resilience of British culture and its ability to absorb and interact with other cultures. The rise in demand for specialized medical services in the U.S. has been recognized as one of the contributors to increased health care costs. Nuclear medicine is a specialized service that uses relatively new technologies and radiopharmaceuticals with a short half-life for diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Nuclear medicine procedures are multi-step and have to be performed under restrictive time constraints. Consequently, managing patients in nuclear medicine clinics is a challenging problem that has received little research attention. In this paper, we derive algorithms for scheduling nuclear medicine patients and resources. We validate our algorithms using simulation of an actual nuclear medicine clinic based on historical data and compare the performance of our algorithms with the methods currently used in the clinic. The results we obtain provide useful insights into managing patients and resources in nuclear medicine clinics. For example, results show that patient throughput can be increased when some clinic resources are reserved to exclusively serve specific procedures on those days when higher demand is expected. The current study draws on national data to explore differences in access to flexible work scheduling by the gender composition of women's and men's occupations. Results show that those who work in integrated occupations are more likely to have access to flexible scheduling. Women and men do not take jobs with lower pay in return for greater access to flexibility. Instead, jobs with higher pay offer greater flexibility. Integrated occupations tend to offer the greatest access to flexible scheduling because of their structural locations. Part-time work is negatively associated with men's access to flexible scheduling but positively associated with women's access. Women have greater flexibility when they work for large establishments, whereas men have greater flexibility when they work for small establishments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the Bush administration enacted the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) in 2002, lawmakers and school administrators have questioned what changes, if any, the Obama administration will make. This article discusses the effects of NCLB on nontested subjects, specifically music and arts in the general curriculum. Recent studies show the construction industry in the USA is facing a long term labour shortage. Multiskilling has been suggested as a strategy to address this issue by utilizing existing workers more efficiently. Multiskilling decreases the number of workers hired for a project and can improve productivity. Additional benefits include higher income and increased employability of the workforce. To take full advantage of these benefits, the workforce strategy and the planning and scheduling processes of a construction project must be adapted to use multiskilling effectively and efficiently. The multiskilled workforce should be scheduled and organized to maximize the duration of employment for workers, reduce the overall labour requirements and cover the skills combinations required by the project. This research synthesizes and formalizes the methods that successful construction companies are currently applying to implement a multiskilled workforce. Shorter work hours was a vital issue during the formation of the labor movement in the 19th century and continued to be important until the end of the Great Depression. Some of the most dramatic and significant events in the history of labor (such as the strikes of 1886, the Haymarket disaster, the steel strike of 1919) and some of labor's most notable achievements (such as the ten hour day and the eight hour day) were parts of labor's century-long struggle for shorter hours. Recent writers have also noted that workers valued shorter hours because it was necessary for the expression of the nonpecuniary values, motives, and activities which the "new labor historians" have shown to be of such significance. But the history of shorter hours transcends the labor movement. Shorter hours was a political issue almost as long as it was a labor cause. It was part of reform politics from before the Civil War through Franklin Delano Roosevelt's second term.

The article reports on the availability of free, online instructions for creating a pill card or an illustrated medication schedule using a personal or laptop computer and printer from the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The importance of adherence to medication instructions is stressed. One reason for noncompliance of patients to medical instructions is failure to understand how to take their medicines. An overview of the instruction "How to Create a Pill Card" from AHRQ is presented.
