The article discusses the factors that led to the weakening of U.S. export controls on bomb-grade uranium. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 which includes an amendment that eased off restrictions on the export of highly enriched uranium was forced into law by foreign producers of medical isotopes, their U.S.-based lobbyists, sectors of the U.S. medical community and the compliant lawmakers. The primary agitator for this was Canada's Nordion, the world's largest producer of medical isotopes and the main supplier to the U.S.
