Background: U.S. military veterans may be reluctant to disclose suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Suicide-specific cognitions, which generally avoid direct mention of suicide, may be reliable indicators of risk among those reluctant to disclose such thoughts and behaviors. Methods: Data from a population-based, cross-sectional study of 2,430 U.S. military veterans were analyzed to examine the associations between the Brief Suicide Cognitions Scale (B-SCS), suicidal ideation, and suicide planning. Results: After adjusting for age, sex, number of adverse childhood experiences, cumulative trauma burden, depressive symptom severity, and lifetime history of suicide attempt, total scores on the B-SCS (excluding the item mentioning suicide) were uniquely associated with suicidal ideation (odds ratio [OR] = 1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.15–1.32) and suicide planning (OR = 1.27, 95%CI = 1.18–1.37). Exploratory post-hoc analyses revealed that difficulties with solving and coping with one's problems were uniquely linked to these outcomes. Conclusions: Assessment of suicide-specific cognitions may help to enhance suicide detection and prevention in veterans, especially in those who may not directly disclose thoughts of suicide. Despite frequent reports of mental health needs among older women with cancer, depressive symptoms often go unrecognized and untreated, particularly in socially vulnerable survivors. Here, we examined associations of sociodemographic factors and social limitations with depressive symptoms from pre-diagnosis to post-diagnosis in older women diagnosed with breast or gynecological cancer. Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare Health Outcomes Survey (SEER-MHOS) linked dataset, we used logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between sociodemographic factors (race, ethnicity, marital status, rurality) and social limitations (i.e., health interfering with social activities) on depressive symptoms in women aged ≥65 years with breast or gynecologic cancer (n = 1,353). Most participants had breast cancer (82.0%), stage I-II cancer (85.8%), received surgery for their cancer (94.8%), and radiation treatment (50.6%). Prior to diagnosis, 11.8% reported depressive symptoms, which nearly doubled to 22.4% at follow-up. Participants were 2.7 times more likely of reporting depressive symptoms after cancer diagnosis compared with pre-cancer diagnosis (95%CI: 2.10–3.48). Race, ethnicity, rurality, marital status, and social interference were significantly associated with an increased risk of depressive symptoms after cancer diagnosis than before their cancer diagnosis (p < 0.05). In summary, depressive symptoms increased following a cancer diagnosis. Drawing on the premise of dialectical tensions in the management of privacy and connectivity, this study proposes a model presenting a clue to the privacy paradox: how social media users negotiate information ownership while reacting to privacy concerns. The study further examines gender differences in the perception of privacy concerns and negotiation of information ownership. The findings show that others' sharing of information ownership influenced one's own sharing of information ownership. While privacy concerns increased privacy rule adaptation, positive norms of shared information ownership negatively influenced privacy rule adaptation. There were gender differences found: women were more likely than men to react positively to expand shared information ownership and to regulate the degree of shared information ownership by adapting their privacy rules. People can present a systematic bias in sharing fake news on social media based on their political orientation: they tend to share fake news that support their political view more than they share fake news with different political leanings, even though both types of news are equally fake. Here, we explain this systematic bias (termed polarized sharing) by considering social identification theory aspects together with theories on gender differences in social conformity and response to threats. Findings based on a study of 250 Facebook users in the US revealed that partisan identification is a double edge-sword. It increased polarized sharing of fake news directly, but decreased it indirectly, by increasing social network heterophily, which in turn, demotivated polarized sharing of fake news. Importantly, these processes differed by gender. Men were more influenced directly by partisan identification, and women, were more influenced indirectly, through limited social network heterophily. Metaphorical language describing the COVID-19 pandemic as a war has been pervasive in public discourse (e.g. "the pandemic is a war," "the virus is an enemy," and "the vaccine is a weapon"). This study employs an online survey experiment (N = 551 U.S. adults) to examine the impact of war metaphors compared to non-metaphorical literal frames and fire metaphors (e.g. "the pandemic is a wildfire"). War metaphors exhibited little advantage over literal frames across a variety of desirable outcomes (i.e. the adoption of pro-health behaviors against COVID-19, perceived solidarity and collective responsibility to curb the pandemic, and intentions to discuss and share the health news with others). However, this study revealed some benefits of war metaphors over fire metaphors. Compared with fire metaphors, health news featuring war metaphors increased both positive emotions and perceived threats of COVID-19, which in turn promoted pro-health behaviors against COVID-19 and perceived solidarity to cope with the public health crisis. Moreover, positive emotions in response to war metaphors also indirectly encouraged the retransmission of science-based COVID-19 health news. This study thus showcased the benefits and limitations of war metaphors and revealed the mediating roles of perceived threats and positive emotions in explaining war metaphorical framing effects. This study investigates the relationship between media use and breast cancer screening intentions by integrating the celebrity identification model and the theory of reasoned action. It tests an integrative model with survey data from 315 U.S. adult women. The study found that media use for breast cancer information was positively associated with parasocial interaction (PSI) and identification with celebrities who have or have had breast cancer; PSI was positively associated with attitudes, descriptive and injunctive norms in breast cancer screening, while identification with celebrities was positively associated with descriptive norms; attitudes, injunctive norms and descriptive norms were positively associated with breast cancer screening intentions. The study supports the mediating effect of PSI, identification, attitudes, and descriptive and injunctive norms on the association between media use and breast cancer prevention intentions. Care provider communication with Black birthing families is impactful. This cross-sectional study asked 216 Black fathers to recall treatment by birthing care providers and tested variables contributing to birth satisfaction and fathering identity salience. Most fathers reported that care providers were respectful resulting in a positive birthing experience; however, 15% reported negative experiences with care providers. Perceived social support was shown to be a mediator between disrespect, mistreatment, inclusive communication, trust, and positive emotion with birth satisfaction and fathering identity salience. Care provider disrespect served as a "spoiler" of the birthing experience and subsequently diminished positive fathering identity salience. Analysis of open-ended comments showed that contrary to stereotypes about absent, disengaged Black fathers, fathers in this study were caring toward their newborns, present for them, and engaged in fathering. Objectives: Targeting is a communication strategy in which a message is designed to address a particular group. It has been postulated that targeting increases message relevance; however, researchers are still explicating relevance and its impact on downline cognitive processes (e.g. message quality, cognitive cost). The current study addresses both gaps by evaluating the impact of targeted materials for White and African American audiences. Design: Adult women (N = 266) aged 18-74 (Mage = 47.12, SD = 1.40) were recruited to participate in a 2 (targeting: multiracial, African American) × 2 (race: White participants, African American participants) × 2 (topic: Hypertension, Environmental Breast Cancer) message experiment. Results: Across both topics, African American participants in the African American condition had reduced cognitive costs, increased message clarity, and increased message relevance. An indirect serial mediation model was supported wherein the relationship between targeting and behavioral intention was mediated by perceived relevance and perceived message quality. Conclusion: Targeting enhances perceived message relevance which, in turn, impacts behavioral intentions via perceived message quality. Using a nationally representative sample of U.S. young adults aged 18–29-year-old, this study investigated the relationship between COVID-induced financial hardship and depression (N = 1080). About 40% of the sample had one or more financial hardships, a quarter reported depressive symptoms. The positive association between financial hardship and depression was cumulative: Those who had four different hardships were almost five times more likely to report depressive symptoms than those reported no hardship. Varying rates of complications have been reported for prehospital sedation with ketamine, and the relationship to dosing has not been studied on a large scale. We evaluated the association between prehospital ketamine dosing and rates of intubations and other adverse events in patients with behavioral emergencies. Using the 2018/2019 ESO public-use research datasets, we included all non-traumatic, adult behavioral and drug-related EMS encounters with ketamine administration. Based on consensus guidelines, we stratified patients into "above" and "at/below" the maximum dosing for sedation (2 mg/kg IV/IO or 5 mg/kg IM) using the highest single dose of ketamine given. We created propensity scores for matched subjects using 1:1 propensity score matching. Using logistic regression, we compared rates of intubation and other airway interventions, antipsychotic coadministration, improvement reported by EMS, hypoxia, hypotension, and cardiac arrest between the two groups. We included 2383 patients: 478 in the above and 1905 in the at/below dose group. Above-dose ketamine was associated with a higher rate of intubation or supraglottic airway placement (6.4% v 3.3%, OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.00–3.90). Other airway interventions were similar (40.0% v 40.0%, OR 1, 95% CI 0.80–1.30). The above-dose group also showed a higher rate of improvement noted by EMS clinicians (92.5% v 88.7%, OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.01–2.40). The rates of antipsychotic coadministration, hypoxia, hypotension, and cardiac arrest were similar between the cohorts. Patients given ketamine doses above consensus recommendations for sedation appeared more likely to receive prehospital intubation but not more likely to experience other adverse events. Objectives: The present study examined how activity engagement mediates the association between personality and cognition. Methods: Participants were middle-aged and older adults (Age range: 24–93 years; N > 16,000) from the Midlife in the United States Study, the Health and Retirement Study, the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, and the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study of Aging. In each sample, personality traits and demographic factors were assessed at baseline, engagement in cognitive, physical, and social activities was assessed in a second wave, and cognition was measured in a third wave, 8 to 20 years later. Results: Random-effect meta-analyses indicated that lower neuroticism and higher extraversion, openness, and conscientiousness were prospectively associated with better cognition. Most of these associations were partly mediated by greater engagement in physical and cognitive activities but not social activities. Physical activity accounted for 7% (neuroticism) to 50% (extraversion) and cognitive activity accounted for 14% (neuroticism) to 45% (extraversion) of the association with cognition. Conclusion: The present study provides replicable evidence that physical and cognitive activities partly mediate the prospective association between personality traits and cognitive functioning. In 2017, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a regulatory plan to reduce the nicotine content of cigarettes. This study examines the association of exposure to industry-sponsored corrective statements on perceptions of the addictiveness of low-nicotine cigarettes relative to typical cigarettes within the general US population. The study comprised 4975 US adult respondents of the 2019 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS 5, Cycle 3). Multinomial logistic regression models were used to examine associations between exposure to tobacco industry corrective messages and perceptions of the addictiveness of low-nicotine cigarettes relative to typical cigarettes. In the overall population, 4.1% reported that low-nicotine cigarettes were much more addictive than typical cigarettes, 67.5% said they were equally addictive, while 28.4% reported they were slightly/much less addictive. Adults exposed to industry-sponsored corrective messages had higher odds of perceiving low-nicotine cigarettes as equally addictive as typical cigarettes (aOR 1.57; 95% CI, 1.13–2.19) than those who saw no corrective messages. Those exposed to the corrective messages specifically about the addictiveness of smoking and nicotine had higher odds of perceiving low-nicotine cigarettes as equally addictive as typical cigarettes (aOR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.07–2.81) compared to those who saw no corrective message. Our findings suggest that exposure to court-ordered tobacco industry corrective statements may have reinforced perceptions on the addictive potential of nicotine. College students use electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) more often than any other US demographic group. In a novel application of the acquired preparedness model, we examined how proximal (e.g., cognitions) and distal (e.g., dispositional) influences accounted for ENDS use and dependence. Undergraduates (N = 1075; 72% female, 74% White) from seven US campuses completed an online survey between October 2019-March 2020. We modeled ENDS use and dependence, respectively, as zero-inflated Poisson distributions with impulsivity as an independent variable and perceived risks and benefits of e-cigarettes as mediators. Students higher in impulsivity perceived more benefits and, in turn, reported greater ENDS use and dependence. Curiosity and friends' use motivated ENDS initiation; stress management and nicotine motivated continued use. ENDS interventions should be tailored to students higher in impulsivity, as they hold more favorable perceptions of ENDS, and should enhance skills to manage stress and nicotine cravings. Objective: To examine what factors impact college students in the United States who are deciding to initiate or continue mental health services. Participants: Spring 2021 undergraduate students (N = 453) at a large urban university. Methods: Online, cross-sectional survey with mental health service experience as the independent variable and social support, accessibility, attitudes toward mental health, mental health literacy, and trust of mental health professionals as the dependent variables, as well as thematic analysis of reasons to discontinue services. Results: Individuals with lower levels of social support and higher levels of mental health literacy were more likely to have received therapy. Participants tended to discontinue services because of negative experiences, accessibility problems, negative attitudes toward services, or they felt better. Conclusions: Mental health literacy, social support, and accessibility are significant predictors of college student service use and should be taken into consideration by university administration. This study analyzed the 2021 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) to assess food insecurity among adults aged 65 and older. Among 8,877 older adults, 4 percent (N=287) reported low or very low food security levels. Those who identified as Black or African American and Hispanic or Latino were more likely to experience food insecurity compared to White individuals. The study found that merely surpassing the poverty threshold might not be sufficient to protect against food insecurity. It also underscored socioemotional support's protective role in older adults' food security. Social workers must recognize various factors influencing food security among older adults. The organ shortage continues to present problems around the world including the United States. In response, some countries have switched from an opt-in organ donor registry to an opt-out registry. The United States currently utilizes an opt-in registry where an individual is not considered an organ donor until they register their intentions. In the current study, U.S. adults were randomly assigned to a 2 (message valence: promotional, refutational) x 2 (autonomy restoration postscript: present, not present) x 2 (social proof: high likes, low likes) posttest only control group design evaluating social media message regarding an opt-out organ donor registry for implementation in the U.S. Results revealed an interaction between message valence and autonomy on freedom threat perceptions toward the message. Consistent with psychological reactance theory, freedom threat perceptions were positively associated with reactance, which in turn was positively associated with an intention to sign a petition and call a representative to voice disapproval of the opt-out organ donor registry. Millions of people around the world are affected by mental illness, yet a substantive portion of individuals with mental illness do not regularly seek help from medical professionals or utilize mental health services. Help-seeking involves an individual's communicative intention and behaviors to solicit advice and/or treatment and thus is essentially a communicative process. This manuscript reports a longitudinal study that examined predictors and outcomes of help-seeking in mental illness contexts. Three-wave data from 223 participants clinically diagnosed with one or more mental illness conditions were collected and analyzed. Results indicated that expected outcomes of help-seeking from counselors were significantly associated with participants' communication efficacy and target efficacy at Wave 1, which subsequently influenced motivation to seek help and actual help-seeking behaviors at Wave 2. Actual help-seeking behaviors predicted post-traumatic growth and cognitive reappraisal at Wave 3. Importantly, communication efficacy and target efficacy interacted in their effects on help-seeking motivation and behaviors. Disability is associated with alcohol misuse and drug overdose death, however, its association with alcohol-induced death remains understudied. To quantify the risk of alcohol-induced death among adults with different types of disabilities in a nationally representative longitudinal sample of US adults. Persons with disabilities were identified among participants ages 18 or older in the Mortality Disparities in American Communities (MDAC) study (n = 3,324,000). Baseline data were collected in 2008 and mortality outcomes were ascertained through 2019 using the National Death Index. Adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated for the association between disability type and alcohol-induced death, controlling for demographic and socioeconomic covariates. During a maximum of 12 years of follow-up, 4000 alcohol-induced deaths occurred in the study population. In descending order, the following disability types displayed the greatest risk of alcohol-induced death (compared to adults without disability): complex activity limitation (aHR = 1.7; 95% CI = 1.3–2.3), vision limitation (aHR = 1.6; 95% CI = 1.2–2.0), mobility limitation (aHR = 1.4; 95% CI = 1.3–1.7), ≥2 limitations (aHR = 1.4; 95% CI = 1.3–1.6), cognitive limitation (aHR = 1.2; 95% CI = 1.0–1.4), and hearing limitation (aHR = 1.0; 95% CI = 0.9–1.3). The risk of alcohol-induced death varies considerably by disability type. Efforts to prevent alcohol-induced deaths should be tailored to meet the needs of the highest-risk groups, including adults with complex activity (i.e., activities of daily living – "ALDs"), vision, mobility, and ≥2 limitations. Early diagnosis and treatment of alcohol use disorder within these populations, and improved access to educational and occupational opportunities, should be considered as prevention strategies for alcohol-induced deaths. Studies on ovarian cancer (OC) diagnosis, treatment and survival across disaggregated Asian sub-ethnic groups are sparse. Few studies have also conducted trend analyses of these outcomes within and across Asian groups. Using logistic, Cox, and Joinpoint regression analyses of the 2000–2018 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) data, we examined disparities and trends in OC advanced stage diagnosis, receipt of treatments and the 5-year cause-specific survival across seven Asian sub-ethnic groups. There were 6491 OC patients across seven Asian sub-ethnic groups (mean [SD] age, 57.29 [13.90] years). There were 1583(24.39%) Filipino, 1183(18.23%) Chinese, and 761(11.72%) Asian Indian or Pakistani (AIP) patients. The majority (52.49%) were diagnosed with OC with at an advanced stage. AIP were more likely to have advanced stage diagnosis than other subgroups (ORs, 95%CIs: 0.77, 0.62−0.96 [Filipino]; 0.76, 0.60−0.95 [Chinese]; 0.71, 0.54−0.94 [Japanese]; 0.74, 0.56−0.98 [Vietnamese] and 0.66, 0.53−0.83 [Other Asians]). The Filipinos were least likely to receive surgery but most likely to undergo chemotherapy. Japanese patients had the worst 5-year OC cause-specific survival (50.29%, 95%CI: 46.20%−54.74%). Based on the aggregated analyses, there was a significantly decreased trend in advanced-stage diagnosis and an increased trend in receipt of chemotherapy. Trends in OC outcomes for several subethnicities differed from those observed in aggregated analyses. In this cohort study of 6491 patients, OC diagnosis, treatment, survival, and trends differed across Asian American ethnic subgroups. Such differences must be considered in future research and interventions to ensure all Asian American subethnicities equally benefit from the advancements in OC care and control. This study aimed to measure the pooled estimate of willingness to use HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) (WTUP) among PrEP-naïve United States (U.S.)-based men who have sex with men (MSM). PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsycINFO were searched. The search strategy contained the keyword willingness and interest and the MeSH terms for HIV and PrEP. Articles were included if they were published between January 2005 and May 2022, reported quantitative data on WTUP among PrEP-naïve US-based MSM, and were available as full text in English. Meta-analysis was conducted to assess the pooled effect size of WTUP prevalence using a random-effects model, heterogeneity in the pooled estimate was assessed, and subgroup analyzes were conducted. Fifteen studies were included based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Meta-analysis revealed a pooled prevalence proportion for WTUP of 0.58 (95% CI 0.54–0.61) (or 58 out of 100) among PrEP-naïve MSM. High inter-study heterogeneity (Q = 548.10, df = 19, p < 0.01, I2 = 96.53, τ2 = 0.09) was observed. Age of the study sample and region where the data were collected significantly moderated the pooled WTUP estimate. Age-appropriate PrEP related messaging and a focus on HIV priority areas of the U.S. would be important strategies to improve WTUP among MSM in the U.S. moving forward. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) has seen increasing use in the prehospital environment over the last decade, primarily with the extended focused assessment with sonography in trauma (eFAST) exam. Previous studies have shown prehospital eFAST exams are feasible in the helicopter transport environment but have yet to demonstrate effects on clinical care. This retrospective case series identified 655 patients with blunt thoraco-abdominal trauma or concern for pneumothorax due to penetrating injury transported by a single helicopter EMS (HEMS) program over a two-year period after introducing POCUS. Of those patients, 258 received prehospital ultrasound which was reported to change clinical care in seven cases (2.7%, 95%-CI [1.1–5.5]). This was primarily through preventing unnecessary needle thoracostomy and initiating blood transfusion for treatment of hemorrhagic shock in cases where the degree of shock was unclear due to inconsistent vital signs. Experimental studies conclude that marijuana acts on Cannabinoids receptors CB1/CB2 and have hypotensive effects. Other studies reported no association between marijuana and blood pressure. To date, no study has examined the impact of marijuana on systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). To assess the impact of marijuana use on blood pressure in non-hypertensive American adults. The study examined the data of 10,274 participants (males = 49% and female 51%) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2012. We used multiple linear regression analysis to assess the impact of marijuana use on SBP and DBP. Survey procedures were used to adjust for cluster, weight, and strata variables. Of the total participants in the study sample, 14.15% were classified as marijuana users and 85.85% were classified as marijuana non-users. Marijuana use has slight increase effect on SBP 2.166 mmHg (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.282–3.050), and DBP −0.471 mmHg (95% CI, −1.278–0.336). Older participants, African Americans, and males show significantly higher SBP and DBP. Our study found that marijuana use was associated with slightly higher SBP; no substantial impact was seen on DBP. Despite the prevalence and negative outcomes associated with simultaneous alcohol and cannabis use (i.e., marijuana [SAM] use, i.e., so that the effects of both alcohol and cannabis overlap) among college students, there is no comprehensive measure of SAM use, with past research relying on single items. The present study aimed to develop the Alcohol and Cannabis Simultaneous Use Scale (ACSUS), a comprehensive self-report measure of SAM use frequency, quantity, and problems in college students. College students at two Midwestern universities who used alcohol and cannabis (Study 1: N = 534; Mean age = 19; 71% female; 88% White; Study 2: N = 258; Mean age = 21; 81% female; 85% White) completed the newly developed ACSUS. Exploratory factor analysis (Study 1) revealed that the ACSUS fits best with 9-items representing two factors: Factor 1 measures frequency and quantity of SAM use and Factor 2 measures associated problems with SAM use. Confirmatory factor analysis (Study 2) supported the two-factor structure of the ACSUS, which was positively associated with measures of alcohol use, cannabis use, simultaneous use motives, and impulsivity. Smoking increases the risk of severe illness and mortality from COVID-19. However, the impact of risk perception on smoking over time is unknown. Participants (n = 487) who reported having smoked daily or nondaily in February 2020 were recruited through Reddit and completed a cross-sectional survey. Linear regression models examined the impact of perception that smoking increases the risk of COVID-19 on changes in cigarettes per day (CPD). The greater perceived risk of smoking on COVID-19 predicted greater decreases in CPD from before the pandemic (December 2019 – February 2020) to March – May 2020, but no change was observed from March – May 2020 to June – August 2020. However, greater perceived risk predicted increases in CPD from June – August 2020 to November 2020 – January 2021. Participants with high levels of perceived risk (>75th percentile) were more likely to reduce their CPD in the beginning of the pandemic compared to those with low perceived risk (≤25th percentile), but more likely to increase their CPD between June – August 2020 to November 2020 – January 2021, even though perceived risk remained stable over time. This study reports on food insecurity (FI) amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. College students in four regions of the US completed the two-item validated Hunger Vital Sign™ screening tool on Qualtrics. FI increased significantly after March 2020 among US students (worry about food running out: 25% to 35%; food did not last: 17% to 21%) with significant regional increase in the Midwest and South. An adjusted multivariable logistic regression model indicated students that ran out of food were significantly at greater odds of experiencing hardship with paying bills (AOR: 5.59, 95% CI =3.90-8.06). The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically altered the way of life in the United States, which may be linked to self-injurious behaviors. We conducted a secondary analysis of data from the Fall 2020 Cohort of the Healthy Minds Survey, a non-probability sample of students enrolled at one of 28 universities across the United States. Participants completed an online survey during the COVID-19 pandemic (September–December, 2020). Nearly a quarter of the sample (n = 6999) reported engaging in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), 12.41% (n = 3819) reported suicidal ideation, 4.98% (n = 1531) reported making a suicide plan, and 1.09% (n = 334) reported a suicide attempt over the past 12 months. When accounting for all COVID-19 factors in the same model, COVID-19 related concern, COVID-19 related discrimination, financial distress, and infection were significantly associated with NSSI, suicidal ideation, and suicide plan; caregiving was significantly associated with lower odds of engaging in non-suicidal self-injury. None of the factors were associated with suicide attempt. This study showed that various COVID-19 factors were related to SIB. Active service members and Veterans with a combat-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) are four times more likely to attempt suicide than those without a TBI. TBIs are the signature injuries of the Post-9/11 conflicts and Combat Veterans (i.e., current and former service members who deployed in support of a combat mission) with these injuries are entitled to receive the Purple Heart medal. However, potentially tens of thousands of Combat Veterans did not receive, or were denied the Purple Heart during the first decade of the Global War on Terrorism because a TBI was not documented during the deployment. To our knowledge, this is the first study to explore the meaning of the Purple Heart and examine the impact of the Purple Heart on Army Combat Veterans with a combat-related TBI. Findings from this mixed methods study revealed that not receiving the Purple Heart is associated with increased suicide risk and lower quality of life after a brain injury. Additionally, thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, and perceived military institutional betrayal are associated with increased suicide risk in Army Combat Veterans with a TBI. This survey study tested a two-level model of responses to conflicting advice about COVID-19 and examined the underlying emotional and cognitive mechanisms and the moderating role of advice source. Results showed that at the individual message level, advice evaluation was associated with advice outcomes. At the message group level, advice evaluation and outcomes were linked to perceived contradiction in content among the advice and the quantity of conflicting messages received, both directly and indirectly via recipients' emotions. Features of conflicting advice received primarily from impersonal sources had particularly strong associations with advice evaluation and outcomes. We sought to examine the relationship between perceived message effectiveness (PME) and actual message effectiveness (AME) in a 3-week randomized trial of vaping prevention advertisements. Participants were US adolescents (n = 1,514) recruited in 2021. We randomly assigned them to view The Real Cost vaping prevention ads or control videos online. Participants viewed three videos at Visit 1, again at Visits 2 and 3, and completed a survey at each visit that assessed AME (susceptibility to vaping) and two types of PME – effects perceptions (potential for behavioral impact) and message perceptions (potential for message processing). At Visit 4, AME was measured. Compared to control, The Real Cost ads led to improved AME (lower susceptibility to vaping at Visit 4, p <.001). This was anticipated by The Real Cost ads eliciting higher PME ratings (higher effects and message perceptions at Visit 1, both p <.001). Furthermore, PME (both effects and message perceptions) at Visit 1 predicted susceptibility to vaping at Visits 1, 2, 3, and 4 (all p <.001). Finally, effects perceptions fully mediated the impact of The Real Cost ads on susceptibility to vaping (β = −.30; p <.001), while message perceptions only partially mediated the effect (β = −.04; p =.001). Our findings indicate a relationship between PME and AME, especially effects perceptions, and suggest that PME may be useful in message pre-testing to select messages with greater behavior change potential. Background: Although the prevalence of conventional tobacco product use among U.S. college students has declined, an increasing number of students use various novel tobacco products. Objectives: This study aims to examine up-to-date sex and racial/ethnic patterns of tobacco use among students at a U.S. university in 2021–2023. Methods: Data of 2,732 students at an urban university in the Southeast of the U.S. were collected in 2021–2023 as part of the National College Health Assessment of the American College Health Association. Self-reported past 3-month use of five tobacco products (cigarette, electronic vapor products, water pipe/hookah, smokeless tobacco, and cigars) was dichotomized. We conducted multinomial logistic regression analysis to examine sex (male or female) and racial/ethnic (non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, or non-Hispanic Other) differences in single and dual/poly (con-current use of two or more tobacco products) tobacco use compared to nonuse, adjusting for age, student status, parent education level, obese status, psychological distress level, and survey year. Results: Male students had higher odds of being dual/poly tobacco user than female students, adjusting for covariates (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.00, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.42, 2.82). Non-Hispanic Black students had lower odds of being single (AOR = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.26, 0.69) and dual/poly (AOR = 0.09, 95% CI = 0.02, 0.37) tobacco user compared to non-Hispanic White students, adjusting for covariates. Conclusions: Considering higher health risk of con-current use of multiple tobacco products, dual/poly tobacco use prevention strategies targeting male and non-Hispanic White students may be considered. Objective: Tobacco use is elevated among individuals with eating disorders (EDs). Yet, further research is needed to understand associations between cigarette and e-cigarette use patterns and ED symptomatology. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of tobacco use and EDs, this study characterized ED symptomatology and tobacco use patterns, including exclusive cigarette use, e-cigarette use, dual use, and nonuse. Method: Young adults aged 18-24 years who self-reported exclusive cigarette, e-cigarette, dual, or nonuse (N = 2500) were recruited via Lucid, an online survey management company. Participants completed questionnaires assessing body dissatisfaction, global ED psychopathology, binge eating and self-induced vomiting frequency, and demographics. ED diagnostic groups included: anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia spectrum eating disorders (BSED), atypical AN, and night eating syndrome (NES). Results: Multinomial logistic models revealed those with AN were more likely to be dual users, those with atypical AN were more likely to be exclusive e-cigarette users, and participants with a BSED or NES were more likely to be exclusive e-cigarette or dual users, compared to those without an ED. General linear models suggested body dissatisfaction and global ED psychopathology were higher among exclusive e-cigarette and dual users, while binge eating and self-induced vomiting frequencies were greater among all tobacco use groups compared to nonusers. Discussion: Our findings suggest young adults with ED symptomatology were more likely to be users of e-cigarettes exclusively or dual users. Religious communities, across religious traditions, remain a source of support and community for many people in the United States. Despite reduced engagement in religious activity and historic exclusion of the wider LGBTQ+ community, a contingent of people, including young transgender people, are a part of religious communities. Based on data from the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey report, this study focused on transgender young adults (n = 769; aged 18–24) and their experiences in congregations. Reviewing race, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability status, education level, and religious affiliation, this study investigated how sociodemographic identity is correlated with religious rejection or acceptance for transgender young adults. The findings highlight that race, educational attainment, and religious conservatism are most salient when assessing whether transgender young adults are accepted or rejected in their religious congregations. Depression literacy (DL) is increasingly recognized as an important predictor of mental health outcomes, but there remains a noticeable lack of scientific inquiry focusing on Korean Americans in this area. In addition, women are known to be more susceptible to depression, potentially affecting their DL and depressive symptoms differently than men. This study aimed to explore two primary objectives: (1) the potential role of self-rated mental health (SRMH) in mediating the association between DL and depressive symptoms in this population, and (2) whether gender differences exist in the presence and magnitudes of these mediation effects. Data were drawn from a survey with 693 Korean Americans aged 18 and older residing in New York and New Jersey. The PROCESS macro was used to test the mediation effect of self-rated mental health on the relationship between depression literacy and depressive symptoms in men and women. Self-rated mental health was found to mediate the relation between depression literacy and depressive symptoms in women but not in men. Providing evidence-informed, culturally tailored and gender specific depression literacy education and programs for the KA communities may be an important strategy to reduce depressive symptoms in this group. Population-based data regarding the associations between prior concussion or brain injury symptoms/diagnosis and mental/social well-being is lacking for U.S. children. Associations between prior concussion or brain injury symptoms/diagnosis (reported by parents of children ages 5–17 from the 2020 National Health Interview Survey) and current mental/social well-being were determined in multivariable models. Amongst 2020 US children, 8.7% and 5.3% had previous symptoms and diagnosis of concussion/brain injury, respectively. 23% of children with symptoms were never checked for a concussion/brain injury, with younger children at higher risk of not getting checked after symptomatic head trauma. Prior concussion or brain injury symptoms/diagnosis was associated with a higher likelihood of current depressive symptoms (odds ratio [OR] = 1.60; 95% CI = 1.21–2.14; p < 0.001), anxiety (OR = 2.07; 95% CI = 1.52–2.82; p < 0.001), difficulty making friends (OR = 1.57; 95% = 1.06–2.33; p = 0.03), use of medications for mental/social/behavioral issues (OR = 1.69; CI = 1.21–2.36; p = 0.002), and mental health therapy/counseling (OR = 1.52; 95% CI = 1.13–2.04; p = 0.006). U.S. children with prior concussion or brain injury symptoms/diagnosis have a higher rate of mental and social disturbances and a more frequent need for mental health services. Nearly one-quarter of children with significant symptoms after head trauma are never checked for a concussion/brain injury; routine concussion evaluation after head trauma should be emphasized especially in younger children. Studies conducted early in the COVID-19 pandemic - before vaccines were widely available - indicated that drug use may have declined among sexual minority men (SMM). This study evaluated drug use trends in the second year of the pandemic. Cross-sectional responses from cisgender SMM living in the US and recruited online (n = 15,897) were grouped for analyses: Time 1: 3/1/2021-5/30/2021; Time 2: 6/1/2021-8/31/2021; Time 3: 9/1/2021-11/30/2021; and Time 4: 12/1 2021-2/28/2022. Results of multivariable models indicated that illicit drug use (excluding cannabis) increased at Times 2 (OR = 1.249, p <.001), 3 (OR = 1.668, p <.001), and 4 (OR = 1.674, p <.001) compared to Time 1. In contrast, cannabis use was relatively stable over time. Rates did not differ significantly among Times 1, 2, and 4. While rates of COVID-19 vaccination increased over time, illicit drug use was negatively associated with the odds of vaccination (OR = 0.361, p <.001). These findings highlight the need for ongoing attention to the risks drug use poses among SMM. Illicit drug use - a long-standing health disparity among SMM - increased significantly across the second year of the pandemic. Farmers in the United States (U.S.) are exposed to myriad stressors and experience their negative effects, including higher rates of suicide than individuals in some other occupations. However, interventions to address mental health amongst farmers have faced barriers, such as farmers' perceived stigma regarding mental health, time constraints, and geographical isolation. Using text-messaging for intervention delivery may help to address some barriers, as text messages are private, delivered directly to one's phone, and require no travel. Our objective was to develop and assess the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of a text-messaging mental health literacy intervention tailored to U.S. farmers: Growing Resiliency in Tough Times (GRITT). U.S. farmers (N = 134) were randomly assigned to an intervention group, who received 12 weeks of text messages regarding mental health literacy, or a control group, who received no treatment. Online pre-test and post-test surveys assessed mental health knowledge, familiarity with relevant mental health resources, self-efficacy to manage stress, and perceived stress. Feasibility was assessed via recruitment and retention data, and intervention group participants completed post-test measures to assess acceptability. Results indicate that intervention group participants were highly satisfied with the intervention and had higher post-test scores on multiple facets of mental health literacy and self-efficacy to manage farm stress than control group participants. The intervention group experienced a significant drop in perceived stress from pre-test to post-test. Participant retention was relatively high (84%). However, recruitment difficulties call into question intervention feasibility. Though the intervention was efficacious in enhancing mental health literacy, improving stress management self-efficacy, and reducing stress, difficulties with participant recruitment indicate the need for continued intervention research in this context. Family caregivers and African Americans often do not achieve the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. Factors associated with engaging in physical activity among African American caregivers have not been systematically examined. This cross-sectional study examined how contextual factors were associated with meeting the recommended amount of physical activity among African American women caregivers. We used a population-based sample of 1,478 African American women caregivers in the U.S. from the 2015, 2017, and 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. We used survey-weighted multivariate regression analyses to examine associations between condition-specific factors, physical and social environment, and individual and family factors and meeting the national aerobic physical activity guideline (i.e., participating in 150 minutes (or vigorous equivalent minutes) of physical activity per week). Over half (53.9%) of African American women caregivers in the U.S. did not meet the guideline. Being age 65 years or older was associated with decreased odds of meeting the guideline compared to being between the ages of 25-44 years (OR = 0.50, 95% CI[0.26-0.99]). Compared to college graduates, women with partial college education had higher odds of meeting the guideline (OR = 2.08, 95%CI[1.24–3.51]). Having health insurance was associated with increased odds of meeting the guideline (OR = 2.28, 95%CI[1.12–4.63]). Our findings suggest several contextual factors are independently associated with meeting the national guideline. Understanding the relationships between contextual factors and engaging in physical activity among African American women caregivers can inform interventions aimed at protecting and promoting the health of these women. Wang and Conway (2006, Autobiographical memory, self, and culture. In L.-G. Nilsson, & N. Ohta (Eds.), Memory and society: Psychological perspectives (pp. 9–27). Psychology Press) posit that remembering takes place in a culturally modulated self-memory system in which working self-goals are shaped by society and, in turn, influence the encoding and construction of memories in a culturally canonical fashion. The current research examined the self-goal of competence, which manifests through self-enhancement versus self-improvement motivations, in influencing remembering in different cultural contexts. We conducted two cross-cultural studies to examine memories for personal successes and failures (Study 1) and autobiographical and vicarious experiences (Study 2) in connection with individuals' positive self-views. European Americans recalled a greater number of success than failure memories (Study 1) and US participants recalled a greater number of autobiographical than vicarious memories (Study 2), which was further associated with positive self-views at the individual level. In contrast, Asian (Study 1) and Chinese participants (Study 2) recalled even-handedly the different types of memories, and the memory retrieval was unrelated to individuals' self-views. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between social factors of stigma and loneliness, in rural communities, that may differ in people with self-reported opioid use disorder (OUD) and those without self-reported OUD. The study's purpose also includes an exploration of the relationships between knowledge and stigma. A cross-sectional descriptive study via survey methods was used. A convenience sample was recruited from Southern Indiana (IN) rural counties with zip codes that had some of the highest opioid use and reported overdoses in IN. Data were analyzed using logistic regression and mean/median difference-based statistics. The odds of having an OUD were significantly lower for persons who endorsed more self-stigmatization for illicit opioid use. Having less than a high school education was associated with a statistically significant, 8.5 times increase in the likelihood that rural participants would report having symptoms consistent with an OUD diagnosis. The present study advances the understanding of rural perceptions of and experiences with OUD and stigma-related HIV outbreaks and psychosocial factors which differentiate persons reporting OUD consistent symptoms. The present study assessed potential associations between vitamin intake and leukemia in a national sample of adults in the United States. A total of 5520 participants were included in this cross-sectional study to investigate the relationship between vitamin intake (including vitamins A, C, D, and E) and leukemia. Results revealed negative associations between vitamin C and E intake and leukemia, whereas associations between vitamin A and D and leukemia were not statistically significant. For vitamin C, compared with the first tertile, the odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidential interval (CI) was 0.90 (0.75–0.95) for the second tertile and 0.82 (0.61–0.90) for the third tertile (p < 0.01). For vitamin E, compared with the first tertile, the OR and 95% CI was 0.92 (0.80–0.96) for the second tertile and 0.86 (0.71–0.92) for the third tertile (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the inverse relationship between intake of vitamins C and E and leukemia were more evident for individuals ≥60 years of age and those with a body mass index >30 kg/m2. Results of this study provide evidence suggesting that intake of vitamin C and E intake may decrease the prevalence of leukemia; however, further large-scale prospective cohort studies are needed to verify these findings. This study aimed to explore the association between dietary intake of tomatoes and lycopene with all-cause and cancer mortality among US adults with diabetes. We hypothesized that a higher intake of tomato and lycopene is related to a reduced risk of all-cause and cancer mortality among adults with diabetes. This prospective study was conducted among 9213 US adults with diabetes using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2016. Data on dietary intake of tomatoes and lycopene were obtained from two 24-h dietary recalls. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard models determined the associations between tomato/lycopene intake and mortality. A higher intake of tomatoes and lycopene was significantly associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality (tomato: Q5 vs. Q1: HR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.54–0.86, p = 0.001, p for trend = 0.001; lycopene: Q5 vs. Q1: HR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.64–0.95, p = 0.013, p for trend = 0.006) after adjusting for all covariates. Compared with the lowest quintile of tomato and lycopene intake, the highest quintile was associated with a lower risk of cancer mortality (tomato: HR = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.35–0.96, p = 0.035; lycopene: HR = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.40–0.98, p = 0.043). Our study demonstrated that dietary intake of tomatoes and lycopene was significantly associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality in US adults with diabetes. Objectives. Cognitive-Behaviorally Based Interventions (CBIs) are evidence-based treatments for alcohol and other drug (AOD) use with potential variable effectiveness by population sub-groups. This study used evidence synthesis to examine treatment effect by demographic and study context factors in clinical trials of CBI for AOD. Methods. Studies were systematically identified, and their characteristics and outcome data were extracted and summarized. Standardized mean differences were calculated for within- and between-condition effects on substance use outcomes. Demographic and study context moderators were identified during data acquisition and several sensitivity analyses were conducted. Results. The sample included K = 29 trials and a total of 15 study-level moderators were examined. Information on participants' age, biological sex, and race were reported in at least 26 trials, but information on gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnicity were reported infrequently or in non-inclusive ways. The mean between-condition effect size was small and moderately heterogenous (d = 0.158, 95% CI = 0.079, 0.238, I2 = 46%) and the mean within-condition effect size was large and showed high heterogeneity (dz = 1.147, 95% CI = 0.811, 1.482, - I2 = 96%). The specific drug targeted in the study and whether biological assay-based outcomes were used moderated between-condition CBI efficacy and the inclusion of co-occurring mental health conditions and study publication date moderated within-condition CBI effects. Objective: US Hispanics have several health disparities, greater tobacco/nicotine-related illnesses, lower access to smoking cessation, and lower rates of cessation. Understanding cultural constructs linked to tobacco/nicotine use may provide a greater understanding of future cultural adaptations of cessation interventions. This study used a multidimensional acculturation framework, with cultural practices, identity, and values, to test links between measures of acculturation stress, multidimensional acculturation (language-based enculturation and acculturation, cultural identity, familism), and tobacco/nicotine use, and interactions with gender. Design: Participants were 391 adult Latin American immigrants (69% women); 12% self-reported tobacco/nicotine use in the past six months. Results: Path analysis showed acculturative stress, β =.16, and acculturation, β =.20, were positively related to tobacco/nicotine use. Enculturation, familism, and Hispanic cultural identity were not related to tobacco/nicotine use. There were no significant acculturation by enculturation or gender interactions, but women were less likely to use tobacco/nicotine than men, β = −.36. Conclusion: Findings suggest that tobacco/nicotine cessation interventions for Latino immigrants may be enhanced with an emphasis on the mitigation of acculturative stress, attention to the adoption of US cultural practices, and gender. The COVID-19 pandemic sparked a globally heightened need for scientific information. At the same time, the abundance of information led to tendencies of media fatigue and information avoidance. Both information seeking and avoidance are embedded in a specific national context, in which conditions of and measures against the pandemic may differ dramatically. In addition, the pandemic quickly became entangled with political ideology. Using the Risk Information Seeking and Processing Model (RISP) as a theoretical background, we investigate the role of national context and political ideology for information seeking and avoidance in a comparative survey in the U.S. and Germany during the early phase of the pandemic. Results show that the factors predicting information behavior are effective in both countries with only few differences: In both countries, perceived hazard characteristics, information norms and perceived information gathering capacity were related to higher information seeking and lower information avoidance. Ideology too is an important influence: Right-leaning ideology was associated with lower levels of information norms in both countries; but only in the US was right-leaning ideology connected to less perceived hazard characteristics and less negative affective responses. This study employed a Reasoned Action Approach to investigate two communication behaviors that were being built into a statewide behavioral health campaign: initiating a conversation about one's own mental health struggles, and starting a conversation to discuss someone else's mental health difficulties. We examined whether the extent of attitudes, perceived norms, and perceived behavioral control regarding intent to perform these behaviors varied by racial identity. Using original survey data from Texans (N = 2,033), we conducted regression analyses for the two communication behaviors and found that intention to seek help was primarily explained by instrumental attitude, injunctive norm, descriptive norm, and perceived capacity; and intention to start a conversation to help someone else was primarily explained by instrumental attitude, injunctive norm, and perceived capacity. Additionally, we identified important common and distinct determinants of the two behaviors across different racial groups. Objective: To address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and its relevant political climate on college-level international students in the United States. Participants: International students aged 18 years and older in the San Francisco Bay Area. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey using PHQ-9 and the GAD-7. Results: The prevalence of depression and anxiety significantly decreased during the last two weeks from the survey completion in April or May in 2021 (Time 2) as compared to the two weeks after the July 6th policy directive in 2020 (Time 1). However, both depression severity, 2.172 (95% CI: 1.900, 2.445), and anxiety severity, 1.897 (95% CI: 1.655, 2.138), during Time 2 were still mild, indicating the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic had still negatively impacted their mental health status. Conclusions: Future research can expand the target population and analyze the long-term effects of policy changes and disease outbreaks on international students in the United States. This study examined associations between perceived discrimination, treatment adherence self-efficacy, and depressive symptoms among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the Southern United States. Cross-sectional survey data were collected from 402 PLHIV who self-reported on interpersonal discrimination experiences based on HIV status, sexuality, gender, income, and living condition. Participants also reported on adherence self-efficacy and depressive symptoms. We employed K-means clustering to identify groups based on discrimination experiences, and logistic regressions to examine group differences on adherence self-efficacy and depressive symptoms. Results suggested three groups: a cluster with high perceived discrimination across all identities/conditions (n = 41; 11%; Cluster 1); a cluster with high perceived discrimination based on HIV status, income, and living condition (n = 49; 13%; Cluster 2); and a cluster with low perceived discrimination across all identities/conditions (n = 288; 76%; Cluster 3). Compared to Cluster 3, Cluster 1 and 2 had 2.22 times (p =.037) and 3.98 times (p<.001) greater odds of reporting depressive symptoms. Compared to Cluster 3, Cluster 2 had 3.40 times (p =.003) greater odds of reporting lower adherence self-efficacy. Findings demonstrate the need for individual-level support for PLHIV with discrimination histories, and broader efforts to end the stigma, discrimination, and marginalization of PLHIV based on HIV status and other characteristics. Purpose: To measure the prevalence of speech-language pathologist (SLP) involvement and associated trends for critically ill children in United States (US) paediatric intensive care units (PICU) through secondary analysis of the Prevalence of Acute Rehab for Kids in the PICU (PARK-PICU) study data. Method: A secondary analysis of cross-sectional point prevalence study conducted over 1 day in 82 US PICUs. Data collected included SLP presence, patients' age, length of stay, medical interventions, aetiology, admission data, Glasgow Coma Scale scores, staffing involvement, and family presence. Result: Among 961 patients, 82 were visited by an SLP on the study day for a prevalence of 8.5%. Most visits were for children <3 years old. The odds of SLP involvement were lower for children who were 7–12 years old (vs. age 0–2; adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.28; 95% CI 0.1–0.8), were mechanically ventilated via endotracheal tube (vs. room air; aOR 0.02; 95% CI 0.005–0.11), or had mild or severe disability (mild vs. no disability; aOR 0.34; 95% CI 0.16–0.76 and severe vs. no disability; aOR 0.39; 95% CI 0.17–0.90). Concurrent physical and/or occupational therapy involvement was associated with higher odds of SLP involvement (aOR 3.6; 95% CI 2.1–6.4). Conclusion: SLP involvement is infrequent in US PICUs. PICU teams should be educated about the scope of SLP practice, to support communication and oral feeding needs during early recovery from critical illness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To examine the associations of two measures of minority stress, non-affirmation minority stress and internalized transphobia, with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) veterans. Method: We administered a cross-sectional survey from September 2022 to July 2023 to TGD veterans. The final analytic sample included 3,152 TGD veterans aged ≥45 years. We used a generalized linear model with quasi-Poisson distribution to calculate prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) measuring the relationship between non-affirmation minority stress and internalized transphobia and past-year SCD. Results: The mean age was 61.3 years (SD = 9.7) and the majority (70%) identified as trans women or women. Overall, 27.2% (n = 857) reported SCD. Adjusted models revealed that TGD veterans who reported experiencing non-affirmation minority stress or internalized transphobia had greater risk of past-year SCD compared to those who did not report either stressor (aPR: 1.09, 95% CI: 1.04–1.15; aPR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.12–1.27). Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate that proximal and distal processes of stigma are associated with SCD among TGD veterans and underscore the need for addressing multiple types of discrimination. Above all, these results indicate the lasting sequelae of transphobia and need for systemic changes to prioritize the safety and welfare of TGD people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study examined employment prior to discharge and the source of treatment payment as physical recovery capital that predicts the completion of treatment for cocaine use. Methods: The 2020 Treatment Episode Data Set: Discharges of the United States was analyzed using binary logistic regression to estimate the adjusted odds ratio of treatment completion with employment and the primary source of payment among those whose primary substance of use was cocaine. Results: A significant increase in the odds of completing treatment was observed among those with full-time or part-time employment. By contrast, those not in the labor force had significantly lower odds of treatment completion. Significantly high odds of treatment completion were also noted among those whose primary source of payment was private insurance or government payment schemes. Conclusions: Treatment services should include the promotion of employment or offer sub-services that assist in securing a job. Future studies should investigate the impact of Medicaid on treatment completion when the Institutions for Mental Diseases (IMD) service exclusion waivers for Medicaid funding are further adopted by states. The policy for substance treatment under Medicare needs to be improved for older people to access treatment facilities and options. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
