Eleven paper birch (Betula papyriferaMarsh.) provenances from a single geographic region in northern Idaho and four geographic regions in British Columbia (BC) were studied to determine whether morphometric variability was due to species' genetics, growing environment, or their interaction. Seedlings were grown at three nurseries in BC and Idaho and planted in a randomised single-tree interlocking block design at Skimikin (50°47′) and Red Rock (53°45′) common gardens in BC. Geographic variation in birch height growth was regulated by genetics and a complex interaction with environmental factors. Growth does not follow latitudinal, longitudinal or elevational clines although provenances at the southern garden showed better height growth compared to the northern garden. Greater percentages of seedling mortality were observed at the northern garden compared to provenances planted at the southern garden. Birch height growth was significantly influenced by nursery displacement effects up to four years after establishment. The safe range of southward seed-transfer distance may be as much as 5°, and beyond this limit a detrimental effect likely occurs. Collectively, these results suggest that a provenance best suited to one environment might not be the best for another environment. As water scarcity and demand for food both grow, viable solutions to efficiently irrigate crops are needed. The recent advent of variable rate irrigation systems provides technology for growers to water their fields accounting for the spatially heterogeneous demand of their crops for water. Some zones within a field may require less or more water based on varying solar radiation, soil type, or surface or subsurface water flow paths. Since these processes are heterogeneous and complex, they are challenging to model or measure with the spatial resolution necessary to implement successful variable rate irrigation. In this paper, we present a new approach that uses high-resolution (20 to 100 m) satellite imagery obtained from Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 to estimate zones of crop water stress. Our approach integrates two independent measures of crop water availability – Normalized Difference Water Index, and Evapotranspiration modelled using remotely sensed land surface temperature – with k-means clustering to delineate zones in an automated fashion. Our study area in southern Idaho has been set up experimentally to grow crops that are water-stressed and not water-stressed, thus providing a rigorous design to test and validate our method. The results of our method agree well with our independent suite of crop water stress measures, such as yield, variable irrigation rates, and matric potential. This method can be used to develop data-driven zones for variable rate irrigation, which has the potential to improve the efficiency of water use without sacrificing yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An alternative mix design using polypropylene fiber-reinforced high early strength concrete was proposed by the Idaho Transportation Department for the longitudinal connections between deck bulb-T precast bridge girders in accelerated bridge construction. In this paper, finite element models of the pullout behavior of headed reinforcing bars in the closure pour and bending tests of beams representing a 30 cm strip of the bridge deck were developed. The smeared crack model was used for concrete, while cohesive zone modeling showed good results in representing the interface between the closure pour and precast concrete. Steel-concrete bond-slip behavior was observed to be one of the most significant factors affecting the results. A scheme to simulate this behavior using zero-length nonlinear spring elements was designed. The finite element models were able to produce results similar to the experimental findings. This paper examines how a second-tier high-technology region leveraged corporate assets—mostly from transnational firms—in building a knowledge-based economy. The paper reviews how firm building and entrepreneurship influence the evolution of a peripheral regional economy. Using a case study of Boise, Idaho (the US), the research highlights several important sources of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurial firm formation is closely linked with a region's ability to grow incubator organizations, particularly innovative firms. These innovative firms provide the training ground for entrepreneurs. Firms, however, differ and the ways in which firm building activities influence regional entrepreneurship depend on firm strategy and organization. In this paper, we present a refined marker controlled watershed segmentation of the gradient of a digital surface model (DSM) to extract the buildings. To remove the effect of terrain, we first derive a digital terrain model (DTM) from the DSM by geomorphology filtering, and then generate a normalized DSM (NDSM). Since urban appearance is complex, building extraction is implemented through several stages. In the first stage, the large buildings are extracted according to the thresholds of the height and the area, to avoid being separated at watershed. Then the small buildings are segmented by watershed with markers. Finally, orthogonal imagery is used to remove the trees according to the colour principle. A case study is carried out on a DSM of a region of Kounan, Japan with a spatial resolution of 0.5 m. The experiment shows the effectiveness of this method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on network governance of local economic development has mostly focused on consequences of bonding and bridging networks to the neglect of antecedents of these networks. Framing collaboration ties between economic development organizations as social networks, this research presents theoretical arguments for emergence of various forms of bridging and bonding networks and illustrates the theoretical arguments by using collaboration network between economic development organizations engaged in economic development of the city of Priest River in Idaho. The results obtained by fitting exponential random graph models on the economic development collaboration network suggest that bridging networks develop when these organizations, faced with coordination problems in collaboration, engage in search of information or alignment of diverse interests. On the other hand, bonding networks emerge when these organizations, faced with cooperation problems in collaboration, engage in enforcing norms or in maintaining credibility of the commitment. The New York Canal (now the Erie Canal) was first proposed in the New York Legislature in 1808 and eventually constructed from 1817 to 1825 through New York State to join Lake Erie and New York City. The Rideau Canal was proposed in 1816 and built from 1826 to 1832 to join the Ottawa River and Lake Ontario to facilitate transportation in Upper Canada (now the Province of Ontario, Canada). The compiled reports of the New York Canal Commissioners are compared with Upper Canada and British Parliamentary Papers to identify common challenges faced by engineers responsible for building the two canals. These challenges were natural, technical, social and managerial. The official reports for the canals reflect how these challenges were met - often in very similar ways - by the engineers engaged to survey, design and build the canals. In this paper, a novel watershed approach based on seed region growing and image entropy is presented which could improve the medical image segmentation. The proposed algorithm enables the prior information of seed region growing and image entropy in its calculation. The algorithm starts by partitioning the image into several levels of intensity using watershed multi-degree immersion process. The levels of intensity are the input to a computationally efficient seed region segmentation process which produces the initial partitioning of the image regions. These regions are fed to entropy procedure to carry out a suitable merging which produces the final segmentation. The latter process uses a region-based similarity representation of the image regions to decide whether regions can be merged. The region is isolated from the level and the residual pixels are uploaded to the next level and so on, we recall this process asmulti-level processand the watershed is calledmulti-level watershed. The proposed algorithm is applied to challenging applications: grey matter–white matter segmentation in magnetic resonance images (MRIs). The established methods and the proposed approach are experimented by these applications to a variety of simulating immersion, multi-degree, multi-level seed region growing and multi-level seed region growing with entropy. This paper examines a regional 2009 H1N1 rural response model, which utilises community partnerships with local government, county emergency management, public health, private healthcare, Medical Reserve Corps volunteers, and other organisations in rural Southeast Idaho. Unique aspects of the collaborative use of federal, state, county, and community systems in addressing specific needs of rural communities are described. The organisation and process of the model in identifying effective vaccine distribution methods and public education appropriate to each rural community are reviewed. Implementation of the model during the fall of 2009 to address the H1N1 pandemic resulted in immunisation rates that were higher in rural populations than with urban counties, contrary to national trends in immunisation rates. Several options have been identified that could further enhance the reliability and extend the applicability of high-temperature irradiation-resistant thermocouples (HTIR-TCs) developed by the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) for in-pile testing, allowing their use in temperature applications as high as 1800°C. The INL and the University of Idaho (UI) investigated these options with the ultimate objective of providing recommendations for alternate thermocouple designs that are optimized for various applications. This paper reports results from INL/UI investigations. Results are reported from tests completed to evaluate the ductility, resolution, transient response, and stability of thermocouples made from specially formulated alloys of molybdenum and niobium, not considered in initial HTIR-TC development. The Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WAMI) Program is a four-state decentralized medical education program initiated at the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSM) in 1972 with the goals of: (1) admitting more students to medical school from all states, (2) training more primary care physicians, (3) bringing the UWSM's resources to needy communities, (4) redressing the maldistribution of physicians by placing more MDs in predominantly rural states and (5) avoiding new construction costs. The program consists of a University Phase and a Community Phase, the latter extending to residency/postgraduate medical training. Thirty-three years on, and now renamed WWAMI (with the inclusion of the State of Wyoming), nearly 1200 students have been admitted to the program, with 5947 clerkship experiences and 2282 resident rotations, and the original goals of this experiment in decentralized medical education have been largely met. Almost half of all residents supported by the program return home to practice, and of graduates who underwent a part of their training in Alaska, Montana and Idaho, 64.7% returned home to practice. To manage ecosystems it is essential to understand physical properties and biological function, as well as the ecological services and social/cultural perceptions of a variety of stakeholders. Where land managers are required to make decisions about restoration, remediation and future land use, understanding attitudes and future land use preferences is essential. In this paper I synthesize data on five surveys of recreational rates and preferences for future land use for the Department of Energy's Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). Subjects were interviewed at several well-attended events at different distances from INEEL, representing local and regional views. Between 24 and 59% of the subjects hunted, between 55 and 71% fished, and up to 87% camped, indicating potential for exposure if INEEL were open for recreation. Average recreational rates varied by location, with the Shoshone-Bannock Indians having higher hunting, fishing, hiking and camping rates than all others. There were significant differences in future land use preferences; subjects living close to the site rated nuclear material processing very high, while those living farther away ranked it intermediate. Indians ranked this use the lowest. Using the land as a National Environmental Research Park (NERP) was rated the highest (or nearly the highest) for all groups. Industrial uses were generally rated low by all groups. These data can be used by local planners and policy makers in decision making regarding levels of clean-up, future land use, future end-states and long-term protection and stewardship of these contaminated lands. The relative unanimity in future land use preferences for NERP and recreation, rather than new industrial purposes, provides guidance for remediation, suggesting that residential clean-up standards may be more stringent than required. This paper presents an overview of the conclusions developed by 35 participating scientists and landmanagers at a scientific workshop held in Sun Valley, Idaho, November 14-20, 1993. The conclusions presented here are those of the authors, but reflect discussions of the entire group, and are based upon conclusions reached by those participants in working groups. The forests of the Inland West are, over wide regions, not healthy. Remedial, restorative, and preventative treatment and management particularly on the federal lands-is urgently needed. A brief window of opportunity, perhaps 15-30 years in length, exists. Without timely management intervention, the region is threatened by major ecological setbacks-pest epidemics and uncontrollable wildfires-that will damage resource values and convert large areas into new even-aged forest systems that set the stage for a repeat of the current problems far into the 21st Century. The scientific tools to understand these problems and mitigate them exist today, but are not being applied on the federal forests rapidly enough to meet the urgency of the situation. The current legal and procedural requirements on federal land management agencies impose time delays which, combined with public opposition to timber harvesting, prevent timely management, doom major forest areas to needless loss and damage, and impose large (and, perhaps, preventable) costs on both local and national economies. River streamflow is an essential hydrological parameters for optimal water resource management. This study investigates models used to estimate monthly time-series river streamflow data at two hydrological stations in the USA (Heise and Irwin on Snake River, Idaho). Five diverse types of machine learning (ML) model were tested, support vector machine-radial basis function (SVM-RBF), SVM-Polynomial (SVM-Poly), decision tree (DT), gradient boosting (GB), random forest (RF), and long short-term memory (LSTM). These were trained and tested alongside a conventional multiple linear regression (MLR). To improve the estimation and model performance, hybrid models were designed by coupling the models with wavelet theory (W). The models performance was assessed using root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), coefficient of determination (R2), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), and Willmott's index (WI). A side-by-side performance assessment of the stand-alone and hybrid models revealed that the coupled models exhibit better estimates of monthly river streamflow relative to the stand-alone ones. The statistical parameter values for the best model (W-LSTM4) during the test phase was RMSE = 36.533 m3/s, MAE = 26.912 m3/s, R2 = 0.947, NSE = 0.946, WI = 0.986 (Heise station), and RMSE = 33.378 m3/s, MAE = 24.562 m3/s, R2 = 0.952, NSE = 0.951, WI = 0.987 (Irwin station). The enduring appearance of agriculture landscapes in the American West belies their dynamic nature. The Clover Tract, a 4,000-acre agricultural development in southern Idaho, was part of a reclamation and irrigation infrastructure project that transformed the landscape through topographical reshaping, new technologies, and cultural and economic forces. Geographic, heritage, and thingly theoretical approaches are used to analyze this cultural landscape. The interdisciplinary approach demonstrates the physical landscape's entanglement with everyday human actions and meanings. Modularity as a system of separate and independent sub-tasks is the appropriate way to improve the performance of artificial neural network (ANN) models in hydrological processes. Using this approach, a block combined neural network (BCNN) structure incorporated with genetic algorithm (GA) and an additional decision block is suggested in this study. The optimum topology of embedded networks in each block was detected using a vector-based method subjected to different internal characteristics. This model was then applied on 879 bedload datasets, considering velocity, discharge, mean grain size, slope, and depth as model inputs over streams in Idaho, USA. The correct classification rate of predicted bedload using BCNN (89.77%) showed superior performance accuracy compared to other ANNs, and to empirical models. Results of computed error metrics and confusion matrixes also demonstrated outstanding progress in BCNN relative to other models. The treatment of spent nuclear fuel for disposition using an electrometallurgical technique results in two high-level waste forms: a ceramic waste form (CWF) and a metal waste form. Reactive metal fuel constituents, including all of the transuranic metals and the majority of the fission products, remain in the salt as chlorides and are processed into the CWF. The solidified salt is containerized and transferred to the CWF process, where it is ground in an argon atmosphere. Zeolite 4A is dried in a mechanically fluidized dryer to ~0.1 wt% moisture and ground to a particle-size range of 45 to 250 µm. The salt and zeolite are mixed in a V-mixer and heated to 500°C for ~18 h to occlude the salt into the structure of the zeolite. The salt-loaded zeolite is cooled, mixed with borosilicate glass frit, and transferred to a crucible, which is placed in a furnace and heated to 925°C. During this process, known as pressureless consolidation, the zeolite is converted to the final sodalite form and the glass thoroughly encapsulates the sodalite, producing a dense, leach-resistant final waste form. During the last several years, changes have occurred to the process, including particle size of input materials and conversion from hot isostatic pressing to pressureless consolidation. This paper is intended to provide the current status of the CWF process, focusing on the adaptation to pressureless consolidation. Discussions include impacts of particle size on final waste form and the pressureless consolidation cycle. A model is presented that shows the heating and cooling cycles and the effect of radioactive decay heat on the amount of fission products that can be incorporated into the CWF. Central Idaho has superior environmental amenities, as evidenced by exceptionally high-value tourism, such as guided Whitewater rafting. The focus of our study concerns the attainment of high-quality jobs in a high-quality natural environment. We estimate cumulative wage rate effects unique to nonconsumptive river recreation in central Idaho for comparison with other sectors. The cumulative effects are based on a detailed survey of recreation spending and a modified synthesized input-output model. Cumulative wage rate effects support using the abundance of environmental amenities to expand and attract high-wage, environmentally sensitive firms, as opposed to expanded tourism to improve employment quality. Decisions regarding the selection and implementation of appropriate pavement rehabilitation methods is usually based on pavement functional and structural condition data. Visual distress surveys and Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing are often carried out by agencies as parts of their pavement preservation programmes. Although backcalculation of individual layer moduli from FWD data is a common approach to assess a pavement's structural condition, the accuracy of this approach is largely dependent on exact estimates of individual layer thicknesses. Coring operations to determine pavement layer thicknesses require significant time and resource commitments, and hence cannot always be accommodated within an agencies' operational constraints. Accordingly, alternative analysis methods to assess the pavement's structural condition from FWD data are often desired. An ongoing research study at Boise State University is focusing on combined usage of pavement structural and functional evaluation data for making pavement rehabilitation decisions. Considering the lack of pavement layer thickness information for all locations, this study is using Deflection Basin Parameters (DBPs) calculated from FWD test data to make inferences regarding the structural condition of individual pavement layers. This manuscript presents findings from this study, and establishes DBPs as reasonable alternatives to be used in network-level pavement condition evaluation practices. The adequacy of DBPs to assess the structural condition of individual pavement layers was first assessed through Finite-Element Modelling. A series of analyses were performed by assigning typical modulus values to individual pavement layers, and the corresponding DBPs were calculated. The calculated DBP values mostly fell within typical ranges specified in the literature for different layer conditions. Once the DBPs were established as adequate alternatives for making network-level pavement assessment decisions, four selected pavement sections in the state of Idaho were analyzed based on this method, and the results were compared against those obtained from visual distress assessment routines. The Mussentuchit Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation of eastern Utah represents the best source of data on Cenomanian vertebrate assemblages from North America. However, increasing data has recently been forthcoming from the late Albian to Cenomanian Wayan Formation of Idaho and Vaughn Member of the Blackleaf Formation of Montana, which are both at least partially coeval with the Mussentuchit Member. While the paleontological assemblages of the Wayan Formation and Vaughn Member are fragmentary, numerous vertebrate forms are represented, with the small burrowing neornithischian Oryctodromeus cubicularis dominating these assemblages. The differences between the Wayan Formation and Vaughn Member assemblages, the Mussentuchit and few other mid-Cretaceous assemblages are likely a result of some combination of preservational biases, paleogeography, and paleoenvironmental differences. The chronostratigraphy, fossil content, bracketing facies, and ages of the Wayan Formation and Vaughn Member suggest these sediments represent the same depositional system prior to disruption by subsequent tectonic and volcanic events. This assemblage from the Wayan Formation and Vaughn Member is here termed the Wayan-Vaughn Assemblage (WVA). Continued work in the WVA, particularly with microvertebrate materials, may reveal additional shared taxa between the WVA and other coeval units. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As demonstrated by Indigenous and rural scholars, participatory research approaches can facilitate capacity building, promote data accessibility, and accomplish community goals within complex hydrosocial systems. To demonstrate challenges and opportunities for participatory research, we describe hydrosocial territories in a mining-impact region in northern Idaho. We then compare two community-university partnerships in the study region, which included Tribal and non-Tribal rural communities. We find that the Participatory Action Research and Indigenous Research Methodologies frameworks provide a robust set of practices and methods for conducting more equitable and inclusive research. Further, participatory research approaches in research involving mining-impacted hydrosocial systems should: (1) build from established programs, goals, and practices; (2) identify respectful levels of partnership engagement, and (3) recognize partnership limitations. Future inquiry in complex hydrosocial systems should continue to build from the existing collection of participatory scholarship to address power imbalances and cultural differences and implement non-intrusive approaches to evaluate outcomes. is a small-bodied ornithischian dinosaur from the mid-Cretaceous Blackleaf and Wayan Formations of Montana and Idaho, respectively, and is the only documented dinosaur with evidence of a burrowing ecology. The type locality, from the Blackleaf Formation of southwestern Montana, consisted of an infilled burrow structure containing the disarticulated skeletons of one adult and two juveniles and represents a rare association of body fossils and trace fossils of a single dinosaur taxon. While these fossils and their paleobiological implications were unprecedented, collection nevertheless necessitated removal of the burrow structure from its geological context and its destruction during body fossil preparation. Here we present the first photogrammetric models of the type locality burrow in its original geological context and three dimensional morphology, constructed from photos taken at three stages in excavation. Because the terminal extent of the burrow was collected prior to the burrow's complete exposure, the structure was never documented in its entirety. A composite model provides the only holistic documentation of the entire burrow morphology as originally preserved. These models supplement the original burrow description, serve as comparative tools for identifying and diagnosing future discoveries, and demonstrate the utility of pre-existing photographs for later photogrammetric reconstruction. Geoscience interpretive programs are not typically developed and presented at national historical parks and never were at Nez Perce National Historical Park prior to the author's employment at the park. The goal of this paper is to provide examples for creating and implementing geoscience interpretive programs at historical parks. Numerous challenges exist when creating geoscience programs at historical parks with the primary challenge being to maintain a historical theme to the program. This challenge was overcome by the author while employed at Nez Perce National Historical Park by designing two interpretive programs based on the importance of geomorphic features and earth materials in Nez Perce history and culture. Positive feedback from Nez Perce Tribal members, and visitors and staff at Nez Perce National Historical Park demonstrates that it is possible to implement geoscience programs with a historical theme that interest the public. Annual willingness-to-pay (WTP) for snowmobile recreation in Idaho is estimated using the travel cost method (TCM). On-site snow conditions are important and erratic, thus we collect two measures of the annual trip count, an in-season survey of the expected count, and a post-season survey of the actual count. Two variants of the TCM model are estimated. Using the post-season actual trip count data and the 'traditional' TCM model, WTP increases from $41 to $91 per person per trip as the fraction of the wage rate that is used to value the opportunity cost of travel time is increased from 1/4 to one. Using the preferred short-run decision TCM model, WTP increases from $53 to $194 as the snowmobiler ratings of off-trail snow conditions vary from worst to best. WTP estimates using the in-season expected trip count data and the traditional TCM model are much higher (triple) than those found using the post-season actual trip count data, and the confidence intervals are much larger. A soil moisture retrieval method is proposed, in the absence of ground-based auxiliary measurements, by deriving the soil moisture content relationship from the satellite vegetation index-based evapotranspiration fraction and soil moisture physical properties of a soil type. A temperature–vegetation dryness index threshold value is also proposed to identify water bodies and underlying saturated areas. Verification of the retrieved growing season soil moisture was performed by comparative analysis of soil moisture obtained by observed conventional in situ point measurements at the 239-km2 Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed, Idaho, USA (2006–2009), and at the US Climate Reference Network (USCRN) soil moisture measurement sites in Sundance, Wyoming (2012–2015), and Lewistown, Montana (2014–2015). The proposed method best represented the effective root zone soil moisture condition, at a depth between 50 and 100 cm, with an overall average R2 value of 0.72 and average root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.042. Objective: To use quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) to assess the impact of iron-deficiency anemia on central nervous system maturation in the first year of life. Method: Twenty-five infants (3-12 months old) presenting ferropenic anemia (IDA) and 25 healthy controls (CTL1), matched by age/gender with the former, were studied in two stages. Electroencephalogram during spontaneous sleep was recorded from all participants; the fast Fourier transform was calculated to obtain absolute power (AP) and relative power (RP) qEEG measures. In the first stage, a qEEG comparison between CTL1 and IDA was performed. Second stage consisted in comparing qEEG of the IDA infants before and after supplementation with iron (IDA-IS group), and comparing qEEG of the IDA-IS group with another control age-matched group (CTL2). Non-parametric multivariate permutation tests (NPT) were applied to assess differences between CTL1 and IDA groups, as well as IDA vs. IDA-IS, and IDA-IS vs. CTL2. Results: More power in slow frequency bands and less power in fast frequency bands in 64% of IDA babies were observed. NPT evinced higher alpha AP and RP (P < 0.001), less theta AP, and less delta and theta RP in CTL1 than in IDA. After iron-restoration therapy, alpha AP and RP increased while theta AP and theta and delta RP decreased, reaching almost normal values. Discussion: This work reveals CNS developmental delay through the study of qEEG (less rapid and more slow frequencies) which recovered significantly with iron supplementation. The record of terrestrial vertebrates in the upper Albian to Cenomanian Wayan Formation of Idaho is sparse, with most fossils recovered belonging to the small orodromine neornithischian Oryctodromeus cubicularis and the maniraptoran ootaxon Macroelongatoolithus carlylei. Here we report on a diversity of theropod forms now recognised from various isolated teeth, vertebrae, eggs and eggshell. Theropods recognised from isolated teeth include a large possible tyrannosauroid, a small tyrannosauroid, dromaeosaurids, and indeterminate theropods. A possible neovenatorid and indeterminate theropods are recognised from isolated vertebrae. A giant oviraptorosaur is indicated by the presence of rare eggs and common eggshell accumulations referred to Macroelongatoolithus. While these remains are admittedly meager, their presence indicates that a substantial diversity of theropods existed in the Albian to Cenomanian environments of southeastern Idaho. The Wayan theropod assemblage is among the most diverse reported for this time period in North America, and represents a transitional assemblage resembling that of the later Late Cretaceous. This article highlights processes for infusing comprehensive school physical activity programming (CSPAP) into the physical education teacher education (PETE) program at the University of Idaho (UI). The PETE program uses a modified leadership framework to target learning outcomes and activities pertinent to CSPAP. Student CSPAP knowledge and practice is strengthened and put into practice by taking three Department of Movement Science core courses focused on individual and community healthy active lifestyles (HAL). The two community service-learning HAL courses focus on assessment, programming pedagogy and marketing of HAL interventions. Knowledge, skills, dispositions, roles and opportunities are progressively sequenced for preservice students to develop effective Physical Activity Leader (PAL) role knowledge and experience, while meeting state physical education teacher standards. Through PAL training, workshops and teaching opportunities, faculty integrate public health prevention models, behavioral change theories, and motivational strategies in school, after-school and community-based settings. Research activities include leadership skill growth, the link between CSPAP assessment and advocacy, Idaho physical education teacher demand and CSPAP understanding, and the relationship between administrator support and technology use to support CSPAP. Since Idaho State University Libraries’ implementation and promotion of EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) in 2014, its electronic resources team continues to troubleshoot seamless content discovery for library patrons. But nothing prepared us for the kind of content issues the Library would have to deal with on a day-to-day basis. This report discusses ways of managing content in EDS to improve discovery of resources, including linking issues to ClinicalKey records and dealing with “bound with” local catalog records. Background: Data from the World Health Organization estimates the global incidence of traumatic brain injury resulting in hospitalization or mortality to be close to 10 million people each year. People who sustain a blast-related TBI are more likely to sustain visual impairment than people injured by other means. There is a lack of published literature regarding the most effective means to assist a patient's recovery from TBI with new vision loss. The aim of this report is to describe the physical therapy management of a person regaining functional mobility when newly blind following a blast-related TBI. Method: This case report describes the inpatient rehabilitation physical therapy (PT) services provided for a single subject who experienced a blast-related TBI with complete vision loss. Outcomes: The subject spent 3.5 weeks in IPR and participated in 21 PT sessions before being discharged home. Improvements in cognition, transfers and functional mobility with adaptations for vision loss were achieved, as well as caregiver training, to provide 24-hour supervision in the home. Discussion: Collaborating with a blind specialist teacher assisted the rehabilitation of this subject. Objective: While most normal-hearing listeners rely on the auditory modality to obtain speech information, research has demonstrated the importance that non-auditory modalities have on language recognition during face-to-face communication. The efficient utilization of the visual modality becomes increasingly important in difficult listening conditions, and especially for older and hearing-impaired listeners with sensory or cognitive decline. First, this report will quantify audiovisual integration skills using a recently developed capacity measure that incorporates speed and accuracy. Second, to investigate sensory factors contributing to integration ability, high and low-frequency hearing thresholds will be correlated with capacity, as well as gain measures from sentence recognition. Design: Integration scores were obtained from a within-subjects design using an open-set sentence speech recognition experiment and a closed set speeded-word classification experiment, designed to examine integration (i.e. capacity). Study sample: A sample of 44 adult listeners without a self-reported history of hearing-loss was recruited. Results: Results demonstrated a significant relationship between measures of audiovisual integration and hearing thresholds. Conclusions: Our data indicated that a listener's ability to integrate auditory and visual speech information in the domains of speed and accuracy is associated with auditory sensory capabilities and possibly other sensory and cognitive factors. Two samples, male college students and convicted male child sex offenders, are compared on their abilities to accurately estimate the age group of a series of photographs of a sole female ranging in age from 11 to 29. Both samples tend to overestimate the age group of the subject photos, and no significant difference was found between college students and convicted child sex offenders in their ability to estimate the age of females. Both groups are compared demographically, and only limited differences were found. The implications are discussed in regard to theory and prevention of child sexual abuse. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The purpose of this article is to examine the dynamics of the relationship between parents and their adolescent children and their association with lifetime and past-month inhalant usage. The population studied was seventh- through ninth-grade students in rural Idaho (N = 570). The authors found a small, but consistent, significant inverse correlation between parental bonding and monitoring of behavior and inhalant usage. There was also a significant positive correlation between verbally aggressive behavior in the family and inhalant use. The data imply that family interaction may play a significant role in the use of inhalants and that the family can play a major role in prevention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The management and curation of digital geospatial data has become a central concern for many academic libraries. Geospatial data is a complex type of data critical to many different disciplines, and its use has become more expansive in the past decade. The University of Idaho Library maintains a geospatial data repository called the Interactive Numeric and Spatial Information Data Engine for Idaho (INSIDE Idaho) to support the land-grant research and outreach mission of the university. INSIDE Idaho-enabled research projects show that curating geospatial data requires a flexible, continuing partnership with researchers. First, changing access formats and data publishing protocols lead to cases in which the data are frequently disseminated in new ways. Second, researchers’ changing expectations about data reuse, as well as their own practices, require a repository to be both responsive and communicative. A strong curatorial process involves enabling new research and applications to be developed from the repository's data collections. Third, the experience with INSIDE Idaho suggests building a culture of data management awareness at an institution can be as valuable a use of a library's time as working to curate the data; that is, developing the local culture improves the efficiency of the curation process, most notably in the case of metadata. The experiences described in this article support the idea that academic libraries must develop infrastructure, policies, skills, and relationships to manage and curate research data successfully. Trichomycetes, or gut fungi, are currently recognized as an ecological group of fungi and protists that inhabit the guts of immature insects or other stages and types of arthropods. The geographic distribution of these endosymbionts is worldwide. However trichomycete data from the Pacific Northwest are limited and this is the first account of gut fungi in Idaho. We report on the trichomycetes from a single site, Cottonwood Creek at Military Reserve Park, Boise, Idaho, where periodic sux-veys for more than a year resulted in the discovery of four newly named, three probably new but unnamed and 15 previously known species. Among the Harpellales three new species, Capniomyces sasquatchoides, Harpella torus and Lancisporomyces lampetriformis, are described, with two possibly new species of Smittium detailed but unnamed at this time pending further collections. A Genistelloides cf. hibernus also is included as a possible new species. One new species of Amoebidiales, Paramoebidium hamatum, is described as well. Hosts in which the gut fungi were recovered include larvae or nymphs of Diptera (Chironomidae and Simuliidae), Ephemeroptera (Baetidae) and Plecoptera (Capniidae and Taeniopterygidae). We hope to demonstrate that future surveys or bioprospecting investigations into the biodiversity of these early-diverging fungi in this region and worldwide remain promising. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the American English (Am. Eng.) version of the Occupational Value Assessment with predefined items (OVal-pd). The OVal-pd is a 26-item Likert-like questionnaire designed to assess the construct of occupational value as framed within the Value and Meaning in Occupations model (ValMO). Following a translation from the Swedish OVal-pd, 277 randomly selected graduate and undergraduate students from a public university in the northwestern United Stated completed the Am. Eng. OVal-pd. Test–retest and internal consistency reliability coefficients were very good utilizing an improved 22-item version of the OVal-pd. The structural validity of the 22-item Am. Eng. OVap-pd was partly confirmed through exploratory factor analysis. The scale was found to assess a one-dimensional value construct supporting the ValMO model, consisting of components clearly reflective of self-reward and concrete value. Exploratory factor analysis results were equivocal with regard to the symbolic dimension of the ValMO model as assessed by the OVal-pd. Spatial attribution mapping is one method of eliciting the relationship between people and place. I use a landscape values typology and environmental values theory to investigate how people attribute values to the landscape in three counties of Idaho and Oregon. Using geographically referenced values data collected in a mail survey (n = 767), I examine the use of intensity weights when implementing a mapping exercise and the spatial scale and geographic associations between values in the typology. The results demonstrate that places within a landscape can offer multiple values, and that when geographically operationalized the landscape values typology can be divided primarily into two categories: material (socioeconomic quality) and postmaterial (personal/environmental quality) values. The findings reflect the linkages between spatially operationalized values and established environmental values theory, and the need for land use planners, natural resource managers, and local decision makers to facilitate both material and postmaterial values in their decisions.
