The detailed analysis of articles on Israeli literature that appeared in a wide range of French publications between 2000 and 2012 allows for exploration of the degree of politicisation in the critical reception in France of contemporary Israeli literature. The diversity of approaches to Israeli literature, and its evolution into a more intimate art form, shows a less politicised critical reception of Israeli literature than is commonly believed. This article focuses on the circulation of a single artefact, the Museu Escolar Brasileiro (Brazilian School Museum) and its use in education through the pedagogical method of object lessons. Concentrating on the activities of particular individuals and enterprises (Menezes Vieira, Oliveira Lopes and Maison Deyrolle), within three geographical spaces (Brazil, Portugal and France), this article seeks to explore the relationship between the national and the international in educational proposals and initiatives that emerged at the end of the nineteenth century. This article considers the publishing project of French writer and book producer Pierre Lecuire (1922–2013), a key figure in the French world of artists’ books, with a particular focus on his collaborations with artist Nicolas de Staël that were never realized in the form initially envisaged for them. It examines, first, Lecuire’s well-established interest in the materiality of the book form through exquisitely produced collaborations with such artists as Zao Wou-Ki and Geneviève Asse, and the suggestion that he aspired to an ‘ideal’ book that would be experienced through all the senses rather than simply read. However, the article goes on to argue that this emphasis on the material is, rather, inseparable from the virtual once unfinished and absent books and associated documents also created by Lecuire are taken into account. With de Staël, for instance, he planned to stage a series of ephemeralBallets-Minute, a project that was not achieved, but they did lead to two associated books. Lecuire presents the documents as relics of unrealized projects, thereby foregrounding the process of production and controlling the narrative of his own contributions. The article concludes that the unfinished project and the provisional fragment play an essential role in Lecuire’s work, which places it within a broader Modernist context. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In recent years, the presence and the role that historians’ own emotions play in their work has been the topic of a vivid debate amongst academics. Are the emotions felt by the historian dangerous, something to be avoided, or could they also be a historiographical resource and an explorative tool? This interview offers a great opportunity to become acquainted with the perspective of three different generations of French scholars who have made important contributions to the historiography of dying, death and grief. They have been asked to explore the emotional dimensions of their work within both the private and professional spheres: the choice of their research topics, the feelings emerging from intellectual and physical “contact” with sources and finally, the relationship between their intellectual knowledge and their intimate experiences of loss. A remarkable copy of the 1595Essaisof Montaigne at Maynooth offers a particularly full set of corrigenda in the hand of Marie de Gournay. Her many textual improvements are tabulated and their significance discussed. At the same time, this copy also carries an extensive manuscript emendation by Gournay to a crucial passage in Chapter II.17 of theEssais, as well as her handwritten inscription to a certain Beringhen. The dedicatee is identified as Henri de Beringhen and it is argued that Gournay’s corrections and inscriptions date from the early 1620s when she attended the salon of Beringhen’s aunt, Madame des Loges. The Maynooth copy as a whole provides a critical insight into the social and literary circles in which Gournay moved at the time as well as supplying further evidence of her continuing editorial work on theEssaisin the framework of her own career. In this study we investigated the representation of countries and continents in the publication of six English language journals of sport and exercise psychology from 1997 until 2011. We selected all articles (N = 2093) published in theJournal of Sport and Exercise Psychology,The Sport Psychologist,Journal of Applied Sport Psychology,Journal of Sport Behavior,Psychology of Sport and Exercise, andInternational Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychologyduring 1997–2011 and all proceedings (N = 2034) in the last four World Congress of Sport Psychology (1997, 2001, 2005, and 2009). Then, we classified them by country and continent where the first author's institution was located. Five English-speaking countries (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) represented 82% of the total publications in the six journals and 38.5% of congress proceedings. These were followed by five European countries (France, Germany, Greece, Norway, and Belgium) accumulating 10% of the total publications. The continents of Asia, Africa, and Latin America represented less than 4% of the publications but 28.2% of congress proceedings. There was a very high correlation between continents' representation in journal editorial boards and journal publications. Reviewers and readers should be aware of systematic errors that might happen in the review process of submitted manuscripts describing studies which have been conducted in non-English-speaking countries but which are eventually rejected in English language journals of sport and exercise psychology. This article considers translations of African texts from English to French in the context of recent conceptualizations of world literature as a critical approach. Translation is a key mechanism, dynamic and metaphor in world literature. However, its idealized connotations should not distract from the material realities of a process governed by uneven structures of production and reception. Two cases are illustrative: Amos Tutuola’s L’Ivrogne dans la brousse (The Palm-Wine Drinkard) (trans. Raymond Queneau 1953; 1952) and Chinua Achebe’s Le Monde s’effondre (Things Fall Apart) (trans. Michel Ligny 1966; 1958) published respectively by Gallimard and Présence Africaine. The rapturous mainstream reception of Raymond Queneau’s stylistic appropriation of Tutuola is here contrasted with the subdued reception of Achebe’s text in France in the late 1960s. The translators’ spectral presence in text and paratext is key to understanding the position of the translated texts in relation to the aesthetic, political and commercial stakes of their publishing contexts. Colonial and postcolonial book history thus confirms the material instability and relationality of any totalizing model of a world literary system and the methodological limits of a singular abstract concept of world literary time or space. Throughout most of the seventeenth century, the printer and publisher Antoine Vitré dominated the printing of Arabic in Paris. He produced mainly religious texts, intended for use by missionaries in the Orient. One of these books was the Arabic translation of Cardinal Richelieu's famous catechism Instruction du Chrétien. This article looks at the story behind the preparation of the Arabic edition, its printing, and its use by missionaries. It explores the role written texts played in conveying a religious message to an essentially illiterate society. In addition, it uses the story of Richelieu's text in Arabic to attempt to explain why Middle Eastern societies declined to adopt mass printing before the nineteenth century, even though there were apparently no interdictions against its implementation. This article argues that Sand's newspaper publishing activities - from their inception in 1841 to their decline at the end of the Second Republic - deserve recognition within the history of the press. Hitherto neglected writings are analysed as a hybrid form of literary journalism according to some definitions of the genre provided by Norman Sims. This permits a focus on Sand's 'flights of imagination', articles written under pseudonyms and in the voices of fictional characters, created as a tool for idealistic political education. The now classic Benedict Anderson paradigm of 'imagined communities' is used to contextualise Sand's use of the vernacular and helps to position her contribution towards the use of newspapers as a vehicle for the communication of democratic and progressive ideas. In 2006, a three-volume joint history manual will be published for use in secondary schools in France and Germany, beginning with Volume III on the period from the Second World War until the present-day. This project illustrates not only the prominence of the Second World War and contemporary history in historical education in these countries, but will also aim to fulfil two functions: to analyse this event in a way that is commensurable to the two historiographical traditions and to provide an adequate foundation for pupils’ future memories of this event in relation to social contexts that have been largely distinct, but whose analogies and overlaps are becoming increasingly apparent. In anticipation of the joint history manual, this article sketches some of the analogies and overlaps between French and German memory cultures of the Second World War in a transnational context. The aim of this research is to determine the main features in which the Czech and French advertisements are similar and in which they differ. The study concerns the content analysis of 577 printed advertisements published in the 10 most representative magazines in the Czech Republic and France. The five largest categories of magazines in terms of their focus are represented as follows: women, men, businesses, seniors and juniors. The results show some noticeable divergences in the basic structure and content of advertising, such as the size, the presence of children or elderly people, the number of product features and the indication of prices. Some convergences appear as well, such as the human presence, the use of testimonies and/or celebrities and the mention of the brand only. These results open up new possibilities for future research in order to verify the key factors, which advertisers could standardize or adapt for their advertising campaigns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Publishing data on individual schools is becoming a common practice in more and more countries. Based on an extensive study of literature and interviews with experts in England, Scotland, The Netherlands, and France, this article reveals that publishing individual school data is not only a contested but also a very complex affair. Different stakeholders may benefit from the availability of individual (comparative) school data under the condition that some prerequisites are met. The publication system must prevent unintended effects from occurring. Additionally, criticisms on existing publication systems should be taken into account. Providing informative, correct, and comparative information is primordial. Value added measurements are explored as a promising approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article offers information on the publication of the reports of the Senate Committee on nuclear arms control. A number of foreign countries have expressed their intention to be informed of the various work of the Committee, which has recorded 700,000 words of its non-secret testimony. Relative to this concern, France has requested, and has obtained, permission to republish all of this open record. On the other hand, Great Britain has asked for several hundred copies of the texts for their use. These countries believe that by being informed concerning this issue will enable them to formulate measures which can counter this problem.

The article focuses on the collection of the Goupil & Co., the Parisian publisher of prints in 1827-1920, which was partly purchased and partially given to the city of Bordeaux to become part of the new Goupil Museum in France. The collection includes the photographs and prints distributed by the company, as well as matrices and other production equipment. In addition, the photographic part of the collection was given to the city including the glass-plate negatives, remaining stock of photographic reproductions of works of art, a collection of negatives intended for eventual publication, works published by Goupil & Co. and the publishing archives.
