This article is a slightly abridged edited version of a final report detailing the background and implementation of a project that introduced electronic book (e-book) collections to Essex Public Libraries during 2004. The research considered e-book collections available for borrowing on a PDA (HP iPAQ) and collections downloadable on to the borrower's PDA or PC (OverDrive, ebrary). The project, sponsored by The Laser Foundation,1 consisted of a partnership consisting between Loughborough University,2 Essex Public Libraries3 and Co-East.4 In addition to a discussion of the findings of the research, guidelines are offered to other public library authorities considering the adoption of e-book collections and mobile technology. Two articles based on this research have been published elsewhere considering the evaluation of the iPAQ trials (Dearnley et al.,2004) and the provision and uptake of OverDrive and ebrary (Dearnley et al.,2005) collections. Making effective use of digital texts is one of the major challenges facing the humanities. This article explores a novel method of using a large corpus of British newspapers to help explain why three neighboring rural districts in England showed very different patterns of infant mortality decline in the second half of the nineteenth century. Quantitative analysis does not reveal any major differences between these districts that might explain this. Repeatedly querying the corpus using different combinations of search terms and place-names, the authors show significant differences in the quality of local government between these districts. They argue that place-centered reading, as they term this approach, can be used to help explain patterns found using conventional quantitative geographical information systems (GIS) approaches. The article reports that information about the substantial labor research collections held in the Brynmor Jones Library of the University of Hull in Hull, England, is now available in a new on-line guide. The Hull University Manuscripts and Archives Database (HUMAD) contains details of over 100 labor collections to be found. The database comprises three main elements. The first, and most important, of these is the main HUMAD listing itself. The second element, obtainable under the option Special lists, comprises item-specific references to particular categories of documents. The final element of the HUMAD system contains recent news about the collections and the archives center itself: the availability of free and priced publications, newly-produced printed lists and guides, and significant new collections.

Drawing upon a database compiled using digital sources, this article explores the development and characteristics of over 1000 Sheffield cutlery enterprises. In Sheffield cutlery, the family was virtually synonymous with the firm. Large factories were rare, with no more than a dozen businesses employing more than 250 workers by 1914. Foreign manufacturers or merchants were sparse, too, and only about 20 have been found operating in Sheffield in the nineteenth century. Businesses drew their strength in the first instance from individual family skills, within a quintessentially craft-based industry. The backstreet nature of most cutlery enterprises enabled women (and children) to play a key role in both the home and factory – sometimes providing additional support through their involvement in the beer houses and shops that many families operated as a second enterprise. Companies often formed miniature family dynasties, reflecting the father-to-son nature of the trade and the connectedness (sometimes through marriage) with other families. This article examines the performance, representation and reception of images of American slavery prompted by fugitive slaves William Wells Brown and William and Ellen Craft's visit to the Great Exhibition in London, where they displayed themselves alongside American sculptor Hiram Powers' Greek Slave. In order to appreciate the visual rhetoric and modes of spectating-upon which the fugitive slaves drew, the author examines their performative intervention in the context of other nineteenth-century performances and displays of racialised bodies. The split in Everton Football Club in 1892 was a defining moment in the history of Merseyside football. Our knowledge of this event has been advanced by a handful of studies, which, though not concentrating specifically on the split, have helped to establish an orthodox view of the dynamics that lay behind it.1 Essentially, the split is portrayed in those accounts as a critical point reached in the financial relationship between the Everton membership and their president and landlord, John Houlding, over the issue of the club's financial obligations to Houlding. The president stands accused in historical accounts of abusing his position within the club in order to impose a series of arbitrary rental increases on the Everton membership from the late 1880s, and to extract high interest rates for loans made to the club for ground improvements. The split of Everton in March 1892 is understood as the outcome of Houlding's financial exploitation of the club. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Born in Everton in 1832, John Houlding was an important figure in Liverpool politics and central to the foundation of professional football in the city. Houlding started out in life, however, from relatively humble beginnings. He helped his father in his occupation as a cow keeper (during Houlding's childhood the district of Everton was semi-rural) before finding employment in a nearby brewery when his father's stock was lost through cattle plague. Before long, Houlding had established himself as a licensed victualler and, eventually, was able to put enough capital together to set up his own brewery: Houlding's Sparkling Ales. By the end of the 1880s he had added ownership of ten public houses to his brewery enterprise. Taking on a number of public roles - a civic-mindedness that earned him the soubriquet 'King John of Everton' - he enhanced his profile within the district of Everton. By the time of Houlding's involvement with Everton Football Club he was overseer for the Township of Everton, a guardian with the West Derby Poor Law Union, a member of the Everton and Kirkdale Burial Board and president of the Liverpool Carters' Union. 'Suffolk Voices Restored' is a Heritage Lottery funded project aiming to preserve and improve access to oral history recordings held at Suffolk Record Office. The project seeks to preserve the authentic voice of Suffolk and make it accessible for current and future generations. This article describes the history and development of the project, including its use of volunteers and input from school students, with information about the content of the resource. The West Yorkshire Nursing Oral History Collection (WYNOHC) provides a valuable local history resource relating to general nurses working within hospital and community settings in the two West Yorkshire towns of Halifax and Huddersfield. Little is known about the historical development of the nursing profession in these towns, reflecting a relative gap in the literature about provincial and regional nursing histories and the lives and work of 'ordinary' nurses. The WYNOHC, located at the University of Huddersfield Archives, therefore provides a valuable source of information.1 However, the richness of the data provides for a wider audience than just nurses, as it contains historical details not only of nursing and health care but places these within the social context of the twentieth century with information about nurses' family life, education, religion and social activities. The nurses discuss their childhood and school years as well as their work experiences, which provide details of the local history of the towns with examples of public transport, the introduction of the motor car, shopping and entertainment. The article offers an overview of research collections in the Laban Library and Archive in London, England. The Laban collection contains personal papers, notated scores, drawings, slides and books by Rudolf Laban, a teacher, philosopher, dancer, choreographer, author and experimenter, and his associates in Germany, in Manchester and Addlestone in Surrey, England. Additional archival collections are the Sylvia Bodmer Collection, the Simone Michelle Collection which documents the life and career of modern dance teacher Simone Michelle, the Dorothy Madden Collection which focuses on American modern dance culture, and the Peter Brinson Collection which documents the life of touring company Ballet for All. The development of Labanotation was also an important aspect of Laban's work.

Through discussion of a historical project to recreate Primitive Mysteries at Laban in London, the 1931 dance work is examined and placed in its context in Graham's career. Possible sources of inspiration derived from Catholic and New Mexican Pueblo culture are discussed, as is the relationship of the work to American modernism in art and dance. Through the use of a Labanotation score, films of the dance, the first-hand experience of Graham dancer Susan Sentler, and published sources, the work has been recreated for Laban dance students in its premiere outside the United States. This article describes the Greater Manchester Past Finder project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The purpose of this project was to create a database of fonds-level descriptions for all the significant archives held by the 11 local authority repositories in the Greater Manchester region. These descriptions are now available online through the Greater Manchester County Record Office's website, http://www.gmcro.co.uk/gmpf . This forms an extensive source of information, unlocking the valuable resources of Greater Manchester's archives. The article summarises the administrative situation in the Greater Manchester area and the difficulties this causes for archives provision, and explains why the project was so important. It further outlines the aims of the project and its place in the context of other similar schemes. It describes the planning and implementation of the project using the archive management software CALM. To conclude, the article addresses some of the issues that have arisen, and the anticipated benefits are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
