Musicians have been described as a 'high-risk' group for experiencing musculoskeletal symptoms (MSSs), yet few studies have tested this assumption. We aimed to determine whether the prevalence and profile of MSS outcomes differed between university music students and a reference group (science students). A survey was conducted of university music and science students. Reported MSS outcomes among the two groups were compared using regression analyses. The majority of participants in both groups reported experiencing MSSs in the last 12 months and 7 days. Music students reported a higher prevalence of wrist/hand MSSs compared with science students. Compared with symptomatic science students, music students reported a higher emotional impact of MSSs. We recommend prioritizing research into interventions for music students that address MSSs in the wrist/hand region, and the emotional impact of MSSs. Addressing these MSS outcomes could reduce the MSS burden for musicians during and beyond their studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Overdoselifesavers.org was created as part of a larger Australian research project investigating impediments to take-home naloxone uptake. The aim of the project was to create a resource to enhance public and professional understandings of take-home naloxone and to counter stigmatising misconceptions about overdose. This article presents the findings of a mixed-method evaluation of Overdoselifesavers.org that assesses its success in achieving these goals. Following an established approach, three data sources were analysed: (1) the reach of the website (website analytics); (2) website audience response (evaluation survey); and (3) other indicators of use and impact (including social media referrals and organisational links). In the 10-week evaluation period, Overdoselifesavers.org had 1769 unique visitors. Responses to the survey praised the website as a means of challenging stereotypes and supporting take-home naloxone uptake. Twenty-two organisations had linked to the website and 324 social media referrals were recorded. These data indicate that Overdoselifesavers.org has begun connecting with audiences and enhancing knowledge about and support for take-home naloxone. Continually building engagement and use of the website outside the alcohol and other drug sector warrants ongoing attention. Further research on developing suitable evaluation methods for novel initiatives such as research-based public websites is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: SMART Recovery provides cognitive behavior therapy based mutual support groups for addictions. The aim of the present study was to explore the impact of cognitive behavior skill use and the influence of a person's social network on psychological distress.Method: Paper based surveys were mailed out to 121 SMART Recovery groups across Australia. A sample of 75 SMART Recovery group members participated. Measures of social network size and composition, psychological distress and cognitive behavior skill use were collected.Results: There are high rates of self-reported mental illness within SMART Recovery respondents. Use of behavioral skills and social network influence was significantly associated with level of psychological distress.Discussion: The current results indicate that engaging in behavioral activation and having a social network of non-drinking or non-using people is associated with lower levels of psychological distress. Given the high rates of self-reported comorbid mental illness in this population, it is important research continues to explore the role of specific cognitive behavioral therapy components and social networks on recovery within mutual support groups. Introduction: Despite the risks involved, the use of drugs for recreational purposes is prevalent and generally well accepted. However, there is sparse research to explore the drivers of this phenomenon. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with lay field observers of the recreational drug scene. The data were analyzed using ground theory to provide a framework for understanding motivators underpinning recreational drug use. Two ascribed benefits underpinned recreational drug use: 1) improved social connectedness and 2) enhanced performance. This paper reports on the relationship between drug use and performance enhancement. Results: Recreational drugs were used with the aim of enhancing performance in a number of ways, including to improve endurance, appearance, confidence, and personality. The majority of participants reported that drug taking offers personal and social benefits that outweighed the risks. Discussion and conclusions: In contrast to much of the literature, this study found that people perceived recreational drug use to have a range of positive effects that they wanted to take advantage of. This important finding adds to our understanding of the “pulling power” of drugs. Ultimately, the study highlights a need to rethink the preoccupation in drug strategies with negative physical, mental, and social outcomes as this would seem to be disconnected from actual experience and may result in a credibility gap for prevention education. This paper examines the current state of three of the key areas of geospatial science in Australia: positioning; earth observation (EO); and spatial infrastructures. The paper discusses the limitations and challenges that will shape the development of these three areas of geospatial science over the next decade and then profiles what each may look like in about 2026. Australia’s national positioning infrastructure plan is guiding the development of a nation-wide, sub decimeter, real-time, outdoor positioning capability based on multi-GNSS and in particular the emerging precise point positioning − real-time kinematic (PPP-RTK) capability. Additional positioning systems including the ground-based Locata system, location-based indoor systems, and beacons, among others are also discussed. The importance of the underpinning role of a next generation dynamic datum is considered. The development of Australia’s first EO strategy is described along with the key national needs of the products of remote sensing. The development of massive on-line multi-decadal geospatial imagery data stores and processing engines for co-registered stacks of continuous base-line satellite imagery are explored. Finally, perspectives on the evolution of a future spatial knowledge infrastructure (SKI) emerging from today’s traditional spatial data infrastructures (SDIs) are provided together with discussion of the growing importance of geospatial analytics for transforming whole supply chains. Background: Clinical studies of alcohol and drug treatment outcomes frequently apply participant eligibility criteria (EC), which may exclude real-world treatment seekers, impairing the representativeness of studied samples. Some research exists on the impact of EC on alcohol treatment seekers. Little is known about drug treatment and country differences. Objectives: We tested and compared the degree to which commonly used EC exclude real-world treatment seekers with problem alcohol and drug use in Sweden and Australia, and compared the impact of EC on outcomes. Methods: Two large naturalistic and comparative service user samples were used. Respondents were recruited in Stockholm County (n = 1,865; data collection 2000–2002), and Victoria and Western Australia (n = 796; in 2012–2013). Follow-up interviews were conducted after 1 year. Cross-tabulations, Chi-square (χ2) tests and logistic regressions were used. Results: Percentages of the samples excluded by individual EC ranged from 5% (lack of education/literacy) to 70% (social instability) among Swedish alcohol cases and from 2% (low alcohol problem severity) to 69% (psychiatric medication) among Australian counterparts; and from 2% (age 60+ years) to 82% (social instability) among Swedish drug cases and from 1% (age 60+ years) to 67% (psychiatric medication) among Australian counterparts. Country differences and differences across substances appeared independent of country effect. Co-morbid psychiatric medication, noncompliance, poly drug use, and low education EC caused positive 1-year outcome bias; whereas female sex and old age introduced negative outcome bias. Conclusions/Importance: Commonly used EC exclude large proportions of treatment seekers. This may impair generalizability of clinical research, and the effects of many EC differ by country and drug type. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim was to explore the utility of Keyes’ concept of mental health in a substance addiction context. Mental health is considered the presence of emotional wellbeing in conjunction with high levels of social and psychological functioning. Using Keyes' measure, the frequency of languishing and flourishing is compared between clients who became abstinent and those continuing to use substances following treatment. It was hypothesised that there would be a significant interaction between substance use and levels of mental health over time. Participants were 794 individuals (79.5% male) attending residential substance abuse treatment provided by The Australian Salvation Army. The current sample was drawn from a larger longitudinal study evaluating routine client outcomes. At entry to treatment there were higher rates of languishing compared to population estimates, yet greater rates of flourishing at all time points compared to community normative data. There was a significant interaction between continuous mental health and substance use status. Mental health was rated significantly higher by individuals who were abstinent than those who had used substances at 3-month post-discharge follow-up. The comorbidity of mental illness and substance misuse has previously been investigated, but this is the first study to investigate the prevalence of mental health. While participants who remained abstinent achieved the highest levels of flourishing, at follow-up there were lower rates of languishing than found in a general community sample. Additionally, results suggested that improved mental health was a consequence of reduced severity of alcohol and other drug abuse, and followed reductions in cravings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Longitudinal quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted for male contemporary returned post-deployed (CRPD) veteran participants of an Australian 6-day structured peer outdoor support therapy (POST) program. Results demonstrated significant reductions in depression, anxiety and stress by day 6 compared to baseline, which was maintained at 2 months follow-up. Self-efficacy, overall life satisfaction and satisfaction with mental health also improved significantly. Qualitative analysis identified several key factors experienced: a sense of shared identity, involvement, and belonging with others, and increased self-determination and personal competence. Such programs may be an important adjunct or precursor to other forms of veteran therapeutic support. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Psychological knowledge contributes in many ways to promoting individual and social functioning. Within the discipline, an energetic culture of public education has grown in recent decades with the objective of elucidating the relevance of psychology. There are many examples of translating and communicating psychological science for public consumption. In the current study, we interviewed 30 psychologists to explore their ideas about helping people to live well and be psychological healthy. Through qualitative analysis of transcript data, we identified three 'best lessons' for well-being. The lessons concerned (a) improving relationships, (b) understanding the way that thoughts influence adjustment, and (c) adopting an orientation to self and life that facilitates personal growth. We interpreted these as representing pragmatic wisdom in terms of their content and the process by which interviewees distilled their knowledge and experience. The best lessons can serve as a useful psychological triad for public dissemination. It would also be beneficial for psychologists in training to recognise pragmatic wisdom as a meta-cognitive process and to develop skills for communicating psychological science to broad audiences. The aim of this paper is to investigate how Australian Opioid Replacement Therapy (ORT) policy influences access to ORT treatment, including the resources required for implementation. In doing so, we also compare the accessibility of ORT treatment in Australia (AU) with ORT in the United Kingdom (UK) and United States (US). A review of government data and policy that influence service delivery was undertaken. When comparing across AU, the UK, and the US, we found several differences. To improve access to treatment in Australia more general practitioners need to provide ORT. Additionally, criteria for quality care, a centralised intake system, a national ORT treatment outcome measure, and a shift towards a recovery focus are recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There have always been independent private psychology practitioners in Australia, yet in the past payment of their services was largely by a user-pays model. The introduction of Medicare Benefits for patients, under the Enhanced Primary Care program in 1999, and Better Access in Mental Health Care in 2006, along with Government-funded mental health initiatives such as Better Outcomes in Mental Health Care introduced in 2001, has provided an alternative funding model for independent private psychological services. Introduction of these and other Government-funded programs has raised questions about the responsiveness of the psychology workforce to meet the changing demands for psychological services created by these reforms. This study aimed to profile the characteristics of 3,587 independent private psychologists who provide services to clients under these schemes by analysing their responses to the Australian Psychology Workforce Survey. Of the 44% of psychologists completing the survey who indicated that they had a Medicare Provider Number, only 61% were in private practice as their main job. The remainder conducted services for Medicare-funded clients as part of a private practice in a second job. Factors associated with relapse to problematic alcohol or illicit drug use were examined in 104 clients enrolled in treatment programmes for substance disorders. Participants were assessed by retrospective self‐report questionnaires to explore the roles of family dysfunction, mood states, primary drug of dependence, demographic variables and various other factors in relation to relapse episodes. Consistent with previous studies, the most commonly cited reason for relapse was negative mood states, followed by external pressure to use, desire for positive mood states, and social/family problems. Reasons for relapse did not differ between clients whose primary drug of dependence was heroin, methamphetamine, or alcohol. Methamphetamine abusers and participants in the drug court programme had the fewest relapses. Co‐morbid psychological disorders were most commonly diagnosed in the alcoholic group, followed by the methamphetamine group and the heroin group. General family functioning retrospectively improved from time of last relapse to time of testing. Results are consistent with previous work and suggest that relapse factors are remarkably similar across different types of drug dependence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
