This paper is the first of a two-part series. It presents a research study that aimed to provide a more contextual description of the commonly applied definition of interprofessional education (IPE) offered in 2002 by the Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education (CAIPE) in the UK: 'when two or more professions learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and quality of care.' The study confirmed and consolidated key characteristics of IPE by exploring the meaning of with, from and about. The words with, from and about were regarded as complex. Words describing learning with each other included active engagement, co-location and equally valued. Concepts linked to learning about included knowing about people outside their professional role and interaction. Learning from others was characterized by trust, respect and confidence in others' knowledge. Although learning about others was described as the first part of learning with, from and about, there were mixed views on whether learning with or from formed the second part of the definition. Based on this work, the second paper in this series presents a proposed taxonomy for IPE that may serve to inform emerging applications for IPE in the context of education, service delivery and policy. This research contributes to an emerging understanding of IPE that will support competency development and sound curriculum design, continuing professional development and evaluation of the impact of IPE and collaboration on health outcomes. Little is understood about social work students or social workers' perceptions of ageing in the UK. This paper presents a small-scale study of 20 master social work students' perceptions of ageing during the first year of their programme. A mixed method approach was employed over a two-staged research project, in both stages the social work students were asked to complete Kogan's attitudes towards older people scale (KATOPS) and draw a person aged 75. Results demonstrated that most students had neutral to positive attitudes towards older people at the beginning of the programme and these improved in stage two; all had positive attitudes. The drawings provided a visual narrative of their perceptions of older people; visual signifiers included physical signs of ageing. Fulfilment, emotion, family, individuality and appearance were emergent themes. Whilst the programme enhanced the students' perceptions more work is needed to dispel the myths and stereotypes about ageing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2010, Vietnam established social work as a profession. As part of their strategic plan, the government aims to incorporate social work into existing hospitals and health care facilities in the country, including psychiatric hospitals and mental health care centers. This paper, based upon survey and focus group data from 194 people working in three major mental health facilities in Hanoi, explores direct care staffs' perceptions of this historic incorporation of social work, with a particular eye to the benefits and challenges of the transition. Results show most staff members thought social workers would provide great support to the many unmet needs of their largely underserved and impoverished patients. They also viewed social workers as a potential resource to the treatment team by reducing work overload. Existing staff, however, were less attuned to the clinical functions of social workers in mental health settings, often equating social work with community development and social movements. Some were concerned about social workers taking on their tasks; others about new social workers being hindered by the professional hierarchy in which doctors were placed at the top. Successful integration of social workers will hinge on strong support from policy-makers and leaders of mental health systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aims of this paper were to report on the global psychosocial functioning of 5-year-old DHH children and examine the risk and protective factors that predict outcomes. Design: A cross-sectional analysis of data collected from a prospective, population-based longitudinal study. Study sample: Parents/caregivers of 356 children completed questionnaires on psychosocial development (CDI, SDQ), functional communication (PEACH) and demographic information. Children completed standardized assessments of non-verbal cognitive ability (WNV) and language (PLS-4). Results: On average, global psychosocial functioning was within the range of typically developing children; however, variability was high and 12% of children had scores that were more than 2 SDs below the norm. Non-verbal cognitive ability, presence of additional disabilities, language and functional communication significantly predicted outcomes. In contrast, type of hearing device, severity of hearing loss and age at intervention did not. Conclusion: The global psychosocial functioning of this cohort of 5-year-old DHH children fell within the range of typically developing children. Many patients with chronic fatigue syndrome(CFS) and/or fibromyalgia(FM) have little understanding of their condition, leading to maladaptive pain cognitions and coping strategies. These should be tackled during therapy, for instance by pain neurophysiology education (PNE). Although positive effects of PNE are well-established, it remains unclear why some patients benefit more than others. This paper aims at exploring characteristics of patients responding poor to PNE to further improve its effectiveness. Data from two RCT's were pooled to search for baseline predictors. Subjects (n = 39) suffering from CFS/FM, as defined by the American College of Rheumatology, underwent PNE treatment. The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS); Pain Coping Inventory (PCI); and Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK) were defined as outcome measures. There was a significant negative relationship between baseline TSK and the change in both PCS total score (r = −0.584; p < 0.001) and PCS rumination (r = −0.346; p < 0.05). There was a significant negative relationship between the change in PCS total score and baseline PCI worrying (r = −0.795; p < 0.001) and retreating (r = −0.356; p < 0.05). FM/CFS patients who tend to worry allot about their pain and with high levels of kinesiophobia are likely to experience less reductions in catastrophizing following PNE. It seems that PNE alone is insufficient to reduce catastrophic thinking regarding pain, and supplementary treatment is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is widely assumed that interprofessional learning (IPL) impacts positively on interprofessional working (IPW) in health and social care. However, there is no clear evidence that pre-qualifying IPL improves service delivery. The direct effect of pre-qualifying IPL on IPW and service delivery is difficult to demonstrate; researchers must rely on professionals' self-report in this regard. This paper presents findings from a qualitative study in which semi-structured interviews were used to collect individuals' views and perceptions about pre-qualifying IPL as preparation for practice. Two groups of participants came from four health and social care professions: adult nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy and social work. One group had experienced a substantial pre-qualifying IPL initiative, while the other group had not. Useful insights were gained from comparing the views and perceptions of individuals from these two groups. The total sample comprised 29 practitioners: 19 were educated on interprofessional curricula and 10 on traditional uniprofessional curricula. Thematic data analysis produced findings about pre-qualifying education as preparation for IPW. These findings suggest that pre-qualifying IPL can prepare individuals to work effectively as qualified professionals with colleagues from other disciplines and that effective IPW impacts positively on service delivery. Primary objective: This paper reports on a client-driven therapy group designed to help clients actively process changes and equip them with the psychological skills necessary to facilitate rehabilitation. Research design: This is an exploratory mixed methods research design based in clinical practice. Methods and procedures: This study documents results from five therapy groups, each group consisting of 2-hour sessions over an average of 6 weeks with a review session 6 weeks later. Forty-five clients (13 female, 32 male, average age = 40.54, SD = 11.87) with brain injury attended the group with Headway psychological services, Cork. Clients’ pre- and post-measures of functioning were gathered to assess the potential therapeutic benefits. Thematic analysis was used to evaluate the qualitative data. Main outcomes and results: Results illustrate a number of benefits to the participants, including normalizing effects, helping with acceptance, finding a new identity and positive mental health changes. The challenges associated with facilitating an organizational environment that promotes work engagement and is supportive of employee psychological well-being are well documented. This study focused on the longitudinal relationships between work engagement and three supportive job resources: supervisor support, colleague support and individual perceptions of the wider resource of work culture support. The sample comprised 1196 employees of an Australian state police service, both police officers and civilian staff, who completed self-report surveys across three waves of data collection. Work culture support predicted higher supervisor support, colleague support and work engagement over time lags of 12 and 18 months. Furthermore, work engagement was a significant predictor of work culture support over the two time lags. Significant indirect relationships were also observed. With the large volume of work-related factors potentially influencing work engagement, the results of this research assist in clarifying the specific supportive job resources that impact upon work engagement over time. Objectives.Cancer is the second biggest killer of Aboriginal Australians. For some cancers, the mortality rate is more than three times higher in Aboriginal people than for non-Aboriginal people. The Aboriginal Patterns of Cancer Care Study explored barriers to and facilitators of cancer diagnosis and treatment among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in New South Wales. Design.Our team – which includes both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal researchers – conducted in-depth interviews between 2009 and 2010 with Aboriginal people with cancer, their carers and health professionals who care for them. In this paper, we identify recurrent patterns of ‘discursive framing’ in the 16 interviews with health care professionals. We are particularly interested in how these frames assisted participants in constructing a professional position on what ‘cultural difference’ means for the design and delivery of cancer care services to Aboriginal people. Results.Despite geographical, organisational, disciplinary and cultural diversity, these interview participants consistently drew upon six discursive frames, which we have interpreted as eitherelidinga discussion ofdifference(‘everyone is the same’ and ‘everyone is different’) orfacilitatingthat discussion (‘different priorities,’ ‘different practices’ and ‘making difference safe’). An additional strategy appeared to actively resist either of these positions but then tended to ultimately prioritise the eliding frames. Conclusions.While none of our participants were dismissive of the idea that cultural identity might matter to Aboriginal people, their reliance upon familiar narratives about what that means for cancer care services has the potential to both symbolically and practically exclude the voices of a group of people who may already feel disenfranchised from the mainstream health care system. Critically unpacking the ‘taken for granted’ assumptions behind how health care professionals make sense of cultural difference can enrich our understanding of and response to the care needs of indigenous people affected by cancer. This paper examines the impact in Australia of the global financial crisis on the baby boom cohort approaching later life. Data from national focus groups of people aged 50 to 64 years (N = 73), conducted in late 2008, found widespread but variable concern and uncertainty concerning work and retirement plans and experiences. A national survey (N = 1,009) of those aged 50 to 64 years in mid-2009 reported lower levels of financial satisfaction compared with other life domains; many planned to postpone retirement. Findings are interpreted in the context of policies and markets that differed significantly from those in the United States, notwithstanding the global nature of the financial crisis. The goal of effective interprofessional education (IPE) is high-quality patient-care delivery and attaining a high level of patient satisfaction in clinical settings. We aimed to examine if alumni who have studied in an IPE program at a pre-licensure stage maintain a positive attitude toward collaborative practice (CP) in the postgraduate clinical experience. This paper presents a cross-sectional descriptive study which employed the modified attitudes toward health care teams scale (ATHCTS) to examine the relationship between exposure to clinical practice and the attitudes toward interprofessional healthcare teams. Results indicated that the overall mean score of alumni was significantly lower than that of undergraduate students on the modified ATHCTS. Only 'team efficacy' had a significantly lower regression factor score in alumni than undergraduate students. Our findings suggest that changes in professional identity in a team may be due to contact with patients after graduation in the postgraduate clinical healthcare experience. The reduction of attitudes toward healthcare teams in the postgraduate clinical experience may be related to 'team efficacy'. This paper presents a sub-set of findings from the first interview (T1) of an Australian longitudinal study that documents the living donor's experience with renal transplant. There has been limited Australian research on this topic to date. A qualitative methodological approach was used, involving open-ended interviews with prospective living kidney donors (n = 20) from the Renal Transplantation Unit at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The interviews were analysed using qualitative research methods of coding and thematic analysis. A significant majority of participants reported that the decision to become a living kidney donor was a positive, easy and spontaneous decision. It was driven by their natural instincts and they offered to be a donor at the earlier opportunity, rather than waiting to be asked. The offer was based on their desire to relieve the recipient's suffering and possible death associated with dialysis and kidney failure. While concerns associated with the medical operation for donation (nephrectomy) were a consideration, this was significantly overshadowed by their desire to improve the recipient's quality of life and avoid their possible death. In the face of such suffering and death, the donation of a kidney was considered ‘no big deal’. Such findings can be used to inform the assessment process for live donor screening. This paper presents qualitative findings from a larger sequential mixed methods study which sought to provide an in-depth understanding of pharmacist prescribing from the perspective of pharmacist prescribers, medical colleagues and key stakeholders in Northern Ireland. Transcriptions were analyzed using thematic analysis as the interviews progressed and emergent themes were identified and coded (along with supporting quotes) independently and by consensus of the research team. Three major themes emerged in relation to pharmacist prescribing: the effect on patient care; challenges facing pharmacist prescribers and the importance of the interprofessional team (where two or more different professions with varied, yet complementary experience work together with a common purpose). Pharmacist prescribing may have the potential to reduce the medication burden for patients (as reported by pharmacists) as pharmacists tend to provide a more comprehensive medication review than doctors; the additional time for consultations made this possible. Further research is required on how interprofessional team working can be maximized in the context of pharmacist prescribing, particularly in relation to the management of multi-morbidity. South Africa faces the challenge of supporting the well-being of adults caring for growing numbers of AIDS-orphaned children. These adults play a critical role in responses to the epidemic, but little information exists in regard to their mental health needs. This paper reports on findings from n=1599 adults, recruited through representative household sampling, who serve as primary carers for children in Umlazi Township, an HIV-endemic community. Overall, 22% of participants were carers of AIDS-orphaned children, 11% were carers of other-orphaned children and 67% were carers of non-orphaned children. Prevalence of depression was 30.3%. Orphan carers, regardless of whether they cared for AIDS-orphaned or other-orphaned children, were significantly more likely than carers of non-orphaned children to meet the clinical threshold for depression (35.2% vs. 27.9%, p < 0.01). In multivariate logistic regressions, food insecurity and being a female carer were identified as additional risk factors for greater depression. In contrast, households with access to running water and households dependent on salaries as the main source of income were identified as protective factors for disparities in depression. Mental health interventions are urgently needed to address an increased risk for depression among all orphan carers, not just those caring for AIDS-orphaned children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spirituality is increasingly understood to be important in healthcare provision, as seen in policy, guidelines and practice across many Western healthcare systems. Definitions of spirituality remain controversial, despite their importance for consistency in research and practice. This paper reports on the definition findings of a nation-wide New Zealand (NZ) study (2006–2008) that examined understandings, experiences and ways to improve spiritual care, primarily focused in hospices. A mixed methods approach included 52 semi-structured interviews and a survey of 642 patients, family members and staff from 25 (78%) of NZ's hospices. A generic qualitative design and analysis was used to capture the experiences and understandings of participants' spirituality and spiritual care and a cross-sectional survey gave sample-based information about the study's questions. Across both studies the majority view held that spirituality is a useful, important, inclusive and broadly defined concept. NZ is a secular country, yet there is clear evidence that spirituality is important at the end of life. It's widely acknowledged that Social Work requires a more psychological approach when working with families. However, social care settings are under increased financial constraints and creative solutions are necessary. The provision of psychological consultations may be one way to meet this identified need; however, practice-based research is in its infancy. Using a mixed-methods approach, this service evaluation aimed to evaluate the provision of psychological consultations across community Social Care, and Residential Edge of Care teams. Quantitative analysis revealed that psychological consultations significantly improved consultees' knowledge, confidence, motivation, and understanding – factors associated with best practice. Thematic analysis of the consultees' qualitative feedback resulted in four key themes pertaining to areas of benefit: 'enriching assessments', 'developing formulations', 'improving interventions', and 'supporting reflective professional practice'. Three key themes emerged in relation to what staff viewed as areas for improvement; that is: 'changes to the process of consultation', 'changes to the content of consultation', and 'no improvement necessary'. These findings further evidence the beneficial impact of psychological consultations when provided across a range of Children's Social Care settings. Psychology consultations therefore offer a promising means of promoting psychologically informed Social Care practice, contributing to best practice standards within the context of financial constraints. Past research on object constancy has tended to treat the viewer as a passive observer. Here we examine viewers' body and eye movements when they are asked to view photos of people in a gallery setting. Participants considered one individual in each photo, before indicating how socially connected they felt toward them and then moving to a spot in the gallery where they would be most comfortable when talking to them. Photographed individuals varied in their projected distance from the camera (near, far) and in their image resolution (sharp, slightly blurred). Results showed that participants looked more directly at near versus far individuals and at sharp versus blurred individuals. They also rated their social connection as stronger when the images were near versus far and sharp versus blurred. Where participants stood when making these ratings was strongly correlated with the projected distance of the images and with their ratings of social connection. These findings are discussed with regard to brain mechanisms for maintaining stability in our perceptions of geometric and social aspects of our world. They also highlight our inherent tendency to attribute qualities of our perceptual experiences to objects in that world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose. To study if partnership modifies the effect of gastrointestinal symptoms on quality of life after radiation therapy for prostate cancer. Material and methods. Using a study-specific questionnaire we conducted a cross-sectional follow-up of the occurrence gastrointestinal symptoms and quality of life after radiation therapy for prostate cancer. We obtained information from 874 prostate cancer survivors treated with radiation therapy at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Sweden between 1994 and 2006. In this paper we describe how partnership status affects the association between gastrointestinal symptoms and quality of life. Results. We found that unpartnered men with gastrointestinal symptoms reported a lower quality of life than unpartnered men without such symptoms. Unpartnered men with symptoms had an excess risk of low quality of life compared with unpartnered men without symptoms for those experiencing altered composition of stools, prevalence ratio 3.8 (95% CI 1.1-13.1), leakage, 3.6 (1.3-10.1), sensory bowel symptoms, 4.5 (1.6-12.8), and for urgency, 4.2 (1.2-15.1). We also found that unpartnered men with symptoms had an excess risk of low quality of life compared with partnered men with symptoms for those experiencing altered composition of stools, prevalence ratio 2.9 (95% CI 1.4-5.8), leakage 2.8 (1.2-6.4), sensory bowel symptoms 3.4 (1.5-7.4), urgency 2.6 (1.2-5.8), and for any gastrointestinal symptom 2.5 (1.3-4.9). Conclusion. Unpartnered men may represent a group that is specifically vulnerable to the distressful effects of gastrointestinal symptoms after radiation therapy for prostate cancer. Shortly after fixating on webpages, users form initial impressions. These initial impressions influence how much users will use and return to websites. Researchers have understudied how objective design features (e.g. visual complexity) influence subjective perceptions of website content and the favorability of initial user impressions. In the present study, the influence of two dimensions of visual complexity – feature complexity and design complexity – were tested within the boundaries of the persuasive model of web design. More specifically, the study examined how visual complexity influences perceptions of visual informativeness, cues for engagement, favourable initial impressions, and behavioural intentions in a sample of young adults (N = 277). Results suggest relationships for both dimensions of visual complexity on all outcome variables using ANOVA and OLS regression procedures and that perceptions of visual informativeness and cues for engagement mediate the relationship between visual complexity and favourable initial impressions and behavioural intentions. The study offers support for the utility of the persuasive model of web design for linking objective design features with subjective design perceptions to better understand favourable initial user impressions. Introduction: Community-dwelling stroke survivors generally show low levels of physical activity (PA). An improved understanding of the factors influencing participation in PA after stroke is imperative to improve levels of PA. Furthermore, gender differences in PA have received little attention in stroke research. The objective of this study was to examine gender differences in PA, physical functioning and psychological factors and the association between these factors and PA in men and women 1-3-year post-stroke. Materials and methods: A total of 187 community-dwelling individuals with stroke (65-85 years old, 29% women) were included in a secondary analysis based on data from a cross-sectional study. The exclusion criteria were severe cognitive or language dysfunction or dementia. The level of PA was measured by the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly. Physical function included balance, walking speed and mobility. Psychological factors included depression, health-related quality of life and fall-related self-efficacy. Falls and fear of falling were each measured with a single question. Results: There were no significant differences in PA levels between men and women. In multiple regression analyses, walking speed (p < 0.001) was associated with PA in men, and balance (p = 0.038) was associated with PA in women. Conclusions: The results indicate that strategies to increase PA levels 1-3-year post-stroke could be improved by considering gender-specific factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the impact of an eclectic framework for combining theoretical conceptual practice models on occupational therapists' theoretical reasoning using concurrent mixed methods with repeated measures and grounded theory designs. Study participants (n = 9) attended two workshops to review select occupational therapy theoretical conceptual practice models and learn how to use the eclectic framework. We assessed skills in eclectic combination of theoretical conceptual practice models using the Theory Application Assessment Instrument. The skills improved significantly [χ2(2, 9) = 7.09, p =.02], a finding that was corroborated by the qualitative findings indicating that the eclectic framework may potentially help improve theoretical reasoning among occupational therapists. Background: Limited research exists on mental health correlates of behaviors of weight-conscious drinking (BWCD) and students' perceptions of how BWCD should be addressed. Purpose: The objectives were to (1) examine BWCD and different aspects of mental health and (2) gain insight into students' perceptions of such behaviors and potential strategies to address them. Methods: Four-hundred-twelve students completed a survey consisting of validated measures for: BWCD, eating disorders, exercise addiction, alcohol use, and psychological distress. Eight focus groups explored students' understanding of BWCD, its presence on campus, and potential intervention strategies. Results: Majority (62%) of participants indicated they engaged in at least one behavior associated with BWCD "very often" or "all the time." Hierarchical linear regression analysis indicated that disordered eating and exercise addiction were significant predictors of BWCD. Focus groups indicated participants struggled with awareness and ability to identify concerning BWCD. Taken together, the results indicated high prevalence of behaviors, but limited awareness of associated health consequences, and identification of BWCD. Discussion: BWCD are pervasive in this college sample, but students do not perceive them as harmful or problematic. Translation to Health Education Practice: There is a need for comprehensive education to address the intersection between alcohol use, exercise, and disordered eating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The lexical-grammatical divide has been a widely addressed topic in aphasia. Speech parts are generally classified as either belonging to a lexical or a grammatical category based on the frequency of acquisition of new members in their paradigms (open vs. closed classes), thus neglecting heterogeneity within categories. Such an approach has led to contradictory findings. First, prepositions form closed classes, but are classically taken as lexical items. Pronouns, also belonging to a closed class, are analyzed as grammatical elements. Second, both within the group of prepositions and pronouns, forms with different syntactic and semantic properties co-exist. Following the theoretical notions granted by a usage-based theory of grammar, the ProGram theory, and taking focalizability as the classification criteria, we hypothesize that individuals with non-fluent aphasias will experience more severe problems with grammatical prepositions and pronouns, given that these elements are secondary and dependent, whereas informants in the fluent group will experience more severe trouble with lexical forms, potentially primary and independent. We focused on the performance of nine Spanish-speaking individuals with aphasia from the Rosell (2005) corpus. Samples of 300 words were transcribed and analyzed. As predicted, grammatical prepositions were found to be more severely compromised in the speech output of individuals with deficits of motor predominance, whereas lexical prepositions are more severely affected in individuals with deficits of sensory predominance. Although less conclusively, the same tendency holds in the case of pronouns. Our results, consistent with previous findings, confirm the heterogeneity of prepositions and pronouns, which should no longer be analyzed en bloc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Ethnic minorities in the Netherlands experience worse (mental) health than Dutch natives. So far, socioeconomic factors, discrimination, and the migration process have been identified as underlying factors, neglecting the potential role of health-related behaviours. This study investigates the mediating effect of lack of physical activity, smoking and alcohol consumption on ethnic inequalities in (mental) health in the Netherlands. Design: Data from a municipal health survey (2012) in the four largest cities in the Netherlands, including 15,633 Dutch natives, 1,297 Surinamese, 850 Turks and 779 Moroccans were analysed. Mediation analyses were performed on the associations between ethnicity and psychological distress (range 10-50) and self-rated health (range 1-5). Results: Being from an ethnic minority was associated with higher distress and poorer self-rated health, especially for Turks (higher distress 4.69, 95%CI 4.22-5.16; poorer health 0.35, 95%CI 0.30-0.40). Moroccans and Turks were the least physically active, Turks smoked the most, and Dutch natives drank the most. Lack of physical activity partially mediated the association between Turks (6% respectively 11%) and Moroccans (13% respectively 9%) for psychological distress and self-rated health. Smoking played a mediating role (3%) in Turks. Conclusion: Lower physical activity and smoking more cigarettes partly explained ethnic health inequalities in the Netherlands. The current findings suggest that intervening and facilitating certain ethnic groups in engaging in health behaviours could contribute to improving their health and reduce ethnic health inequalities. Background: Public health professionals advocate school-based and community physical activity (PA) interventions as an effective method to increase PA levels and improve physical fitness. Purpose: This evaluation independently assessed a school-community linked PA intervention by exploring the provision, process, and impact of the program and its outcomes. Methods: Students aged 7 to 12 years (n = 468, intervention group [IG]; n = 128, control group [CG]), teachers (n = 19), head teachers (n = 4), school program contacts (n = 4), and program administrator (n = 1) took part in the evaluation. Program content and processes were assessed using questionnaires and semistructured interviews. A mixed effect model was used to assess changes in physical fitness, PA levels, and attitudes toward PA at baseline and postintervention. Results: CG increased body mass (P > .001), aerobic capacity (P > .001), and push-ups (P = .005), as well as improved attitudinal scores toward health and fitness and vertigo (P < .05) compared to the IG. Process evaluation revealed struggles with implementation and design, including pedagogical issues to facilitate program goals. The intervention did not improve attitudinal outcomes, PA levels, or physical fitness above that of the CG. Translation to Health Education Practice: Sustainable PA interventions should consider adopting a sociocultural approach that is grounded in learning models and delivered by staff with relevant pedagogical content knowledge. Purpose: To explore exercise beliefs and behaviours of individuals with Joint Hypermobility syndrome/Ehlers-Danlos syndrome - hypermobility type and to explore patient experiences of physiotherapy. Methods: A cross sectional questionnaire survey design was used to collect quantitative and qualitative data from adult members of the Hypermobility Syndromes Association and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Support UK. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. Qualitative data was analysed thematically. Results: 946 questionnaires were returned and analysed. Participants who received exercise advice from a physiotherapist were 1.75 more likely to report high volumes of weekly exercise (odds ratio [OR] = 1.75, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.30-2.36, p < 0.001) than those with no advice. Participants who believed that exercise is important for long-term management were 2.76 times more likely to report a high volume of weekly exercise compared to the participants who did not hold this belief (OR = 2.76, 95% CI = 1.38-5.50, p = 0.004). Three themes emerged regarding experience of physiotherapy; physiotherapist as a partner, communication - knowledge, experience and safety. Conclusion: Pain, fatigue and fear are common barriers to exercise. Advice from a physiotherapist and beliefs about the benefits of exercise influenced the reported exercise behaviours of individuals with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome - hypermobility type in this survey. Implications for rehabilitation: Exercise is a cornerstone of treatment for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome/Ehlers-Danlos syndrome - hypermobility type. Family functioning is influenced by different factors like social context, qualitative characteristics, and an individual's medical or psychiatric condition. We examine the effects of sociodemographic factors and individual psychopathology on family functioning in a non-clinical sample. Cross- sectional study. Data were collected: age, gender, occupation, education, and description of the family, history and/ or presence of mental or physical illnesses, Family Assessment Device and Symptom Checklist-90-R. A healthy sample of 137 families with a total of 407 individuals was analysed. Multilevel analysis showed that individual psychopathology was the only significant factor for family dysfunction. Background: Bullying as a stressor in the workplace has been evaluated in numerous settings. It has never been evaluated in the emergency medical service (EMS) environment where bullying can occur from many different sources. The Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised (NAQ-R) is a 22-question validated tool for evaluating bullying. Our hypothesis was that we could identify a shortened version of the NAQ-R that identifies bullying as accurately as the full screening tool. Methods: This was a cross sectional study of EMS providers in our local EMS transport agency. The local EMS agency transports approximately 50,000 patients per year and is a paramedic level response system. Results on the NAQ-R were on a 5-point Likert scale for each of 22 different categories of bullying that were summed by adding each questions 1-5 response for the 22 questions. Respondents were also categorized as victims or non-victims of bullying based on being positive for any of the 22 types of bullying at least once a week. We performed a binomial decision tree analysis and a cross-validation. Results: Data were collected from 153 providers. Mean age was 33 ± 10 years and 50% were male. Total years in EMS were 8 ± 8 years. NAQ-R summed results in our group ranged between 22 and 88, with an average of 40 ± 15. A NAQ-R score of 33 or less was 91% accurate in identifying non-victims and a score of 45 or more was 94% accurate in identifying victims. The majority at 51% (77/152) of respondents were victims of one or more types of bullying. A combination of five questions was 94% accurate in identifying a victim of bullying among EMS providers. Cross validation resulted in a misclassification risk estimate of 0.12 ± .03. Conclusion: NAQ-R bullying scores in EMS are similar or higher than numbers in other fields. Environmental behavior substantially differs among individuals depending on their environmental attitudes, connectivity to nature beliefs, and socioeconomic profile. People who adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle and those who are unconcerned about environmental protection represent population segments with diverse characteristics. Consequently, this study aims to identify homogeneous groups based on individuals’ environmental behavior. A total of 400 Greek citizens completed a self-report questionnaire. We used behavioral items adopted from previous studies to measure environmental behavior and background variables to assess the socio-demographic profile of the respondents. Additionally, we used the well-established measures of Connectedness to Nature Scale (CNS) and New Ecological Paradigm Scale (NEP) to measure people's relatedness with nature and their ecological beliefs separately. Multivariate Cluster Analysis results indicated that participants can be grouped into two broad segments, named moderate eco-friends and non-environmentalists. This pilot study was conducted using a sample of 374 Portuguese occupational therapists to evaluate burnout levels and prevalence among occupational therapists as well as to relate those levels to practitioner age, gender, client age, years of professional activity, and area of practice. The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory questionnaire (Portuguese version) and a sociodemographic questionnaire was used. Results showed that ∼23%, 44%, and 45% of occupational therapists presented with client-related burnout, personal burnout (PB), and work-related burnout, respectively. Higher rates of burnout were observed across all dimensions as the age of the professionals increased, with more years of working increased the client-rated rate, and client age increased the PB rate. Background: Children with acquired brain injury (ABI) often present with functional deficits that influence their societal participation and well-being. Successful reintegration into school calls for individual support to meet each child’s adjustment needs. The adjustment needs of children with ABI in school settings have not previously been explored. Aim: The objectives of the present study were (a) to describe adjustment needs in school settings for children with ABI and (b) to explore differences and similarities between reports from the children and their teachers. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 20 children with ABI (mean age 12.8 ± 3.4 years; class grade 1-10) and their teachers were interviewed individually, using the School Setting Interview (SSI). Data were analyzed with descriptive and with non-parametric statistics. Results: (a) In the overall group, children rated that 55.6% of the 16 activities in the SSI needed no adjustment. The corresponding percentage for teachers was 48.4%. (b) In the child-teacher pairs, there was a positive relationship between teachers’ and children’s responses only in 3 out of 16 school activities and agreement varied strongly according to the activity in question. Conclusions and significance: It is important for occupational therapists and other professionals to specifically consider adjustment needs relating to school activities from various perspectives when aiming to provide individualized interventions. Background: Stimulant medications misuse is widespread on college campuses. Drug-seeking behavior has been proposed to be associated with temperament traits. No studies have investigated the association of individual temperament traits with the nonmedical use of prescription stimulants in graduate college students. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study performed at a Northeast US medical college. A total of 303 students were investigated using the short form of Akiskal’s TEMPS-A auto-questionnaire. The association of demographic variables and substance use (drinking, smoking, use of illicit drugs) with the nonmedical use of prescription stimulants was assessed. Predictors were investigated using logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of stimulant medications misusers at this medical college was 32.3%. Among the misusers, 6.3% were previously diagnosed with ADHD and were taking stimulants at a different dosage and/or for a different reason than that recommended by a doctor. Stimulant medications misuse was associated with membership in student clubs, drinking, and illicit drugs use. Misusers had higher scores on the hyperthymic scale. This temperament trait, drinking, and the use of illicit drugs increased the odds of the nonmedical use of prescription stimulants. Conclusions: Temperament traits and behavior, which are powerful indicators of students’ inclination to use prescription stimulants for neuroenhanchment, were identified. Purpose:Low vision rehabilitation (LVR) is a pertinent context for integrating early, evidence-based psychological interventions given the high prevalence of untreated depression in adults with vision impairment. This study aims to identify the perceived barriers and facilitators to staff-delivered telephone-based problem-solving treatment for primary care (PST-PC) offered as an integrated component of LVR. Methods:Qualitative semi-structured interviews, developed using the theoretical domains framework (TDF) and Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), were conducted with 21 LVR professionals and a clinical psychologist involved in the delivery of PST-PC. Barriers and facilitators at the practitioner, client, intervention, and organizational level were identified with thematic analysis using a “theoretical” approach. Results:Prominent barriers were a lack of role recognition for PST-PC practitioners (n = 32), unmet client expectation with PST-PC (n = 28), dissatisfaction with telephone delivery (n = 27), and limited organizational awareness of PST-PC (n = 39). Facilitating factors included a recognized need for evidence-based psychological services (n = 28), clients experiencing benefits in early sessions (n = 38), PST-PC promoting practical skills (n = 26), and comprehensive PST-PC training (n = 36). Conclusions:PST-PC may provide an accessible early intervention for LVR clients with depressive symptoms. This study evaluated the impact of counsellor training on emotional intelligence (EI) in 45 undergraduates and 58 postgraduates. Significant improvements were recorded by students on completion of both programmes, suggesting that these were attributable to training which enhanced intra- and interpersonal aspects of emotional functioning. As a group, postgraduates were older than undergraduates, and at the outset of the study, EISAQ scores were comparable; however, at follow-up, undergraduates recorded significantly higher EISAQ scores. Students’ EI was not significantly related to their age, and these findings indicate the potential for effective EI-skills training which is unrelated to quantity of life experiences. Burnout is a critical problem for hospice care system, particularly given the potential increase in hospice utilization because of the increasing older adult population. Hospice care requires social workers and other professionals to work in interdisciplinary settings under conditions of prolonged stress. Guided by the Job Demands-Resources (JDR) model, this study sought to: (1) understand Iowa hospice workers’ level of burnout, indicated by emotional exhaustion (EE); (2) identify organizational and personal determinants of EE. This web-based study used a cross-sectional survey administered to hospice staff across Iowa. Seventeen hospice organizations participated as study sites, and 244 out of 825 employees, consisting of interdisciplinary clinical workers and administrative personnel, completed the survey. Descriptive, correlational, and regression statistics were used to test study hypotheses. Regarding EE levels, 59% of participants were experiencing low EE, while the other 41% had moderate or high EE. Those lacking empathy, working full-time, and working for larger hospice organizations had greater EE. While findings largely support the JDR model, interactions between demands and resources offer only partial support. Results indicate the importance of hospices fostering supportive work environments and providing employee education about emotional benefits of respect, strategies for displaying workplace respect, and evaluation of respect-related initiatives. Background: Breast cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death among US women, causes severe physiological problems, including treatment outcomes of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. It results in severe psychological suffering, including anxiety, depression, and disfigurement. One out of every 8 American women will develop breast cancer at some point in her life. Young women with breast cancer tend to experience more aggressive forms of the disease and with more severe outcomes than older women who develop breast cancer. Early detection and treatment are recommended for reducing mortality and suffering; however, screening behaviors are often avoided.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine breast cancer knowledge, beliefs, and screening behaviors among college women utilizing the health belief model.Methods: Participants completed a valid and reliable 84-item questionnaire that measured breast cancer knowledge, health motivation, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and breast self-examination practices among a sample of college women in the southeastern United States.Results: Participants (n= 342) had low levels of breast cancer perceived susceptibility and breast self-examination. Breast cancer knowledge was significantly correlated with breast self-exam. In a regression model, positive self-efficacy and low perceive barriers were associated with breast self-examination.Translation to Health Education Practice: Health education program planners can enhance intervention effectiveness by utilizing health behavior constructs focused on increasing perceived susceptibility, enhancing self-efficacy for breast cancer screening, and reducing barriers. PurposeTo describe daily stressors affecting and coping strategies employed by individuals with whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) immediately to one month (acute) and three to four months (sub-acute) after injury events using a daily coping assessment. Levels of pain, anxiety, depressed mood and activity are also compared between phases.MethodA descriptive prospective design with a content analysis approach was used. Participants completed daily coping assessments for one week during both acute and sub-acute phases. Main measure was whiplash-associated disorders-daily coping assessment (WAD-DCA).ResultsNine participants used words describing recovery in the sub-acute phase; 31 described stressful events during both phases. Most frequently reported stressors were related to “symptoms”, “emotions” and “occupations/studies”. These were equally reported during both phases. Cognitive coping strategies were employed more often during the sub-acute phase (p = 0.008). The only behavioral strategy that increased in prevalence over time was the “relaxed” strategy (p = 0.001). Anxiety levels declined over time (p = 0.022).ConclusionThe reported stressors were largely uniform across both acute and sub-acute phases; however, the use of cognitive coping strategies increased over time. The WAD-DCA captures individual stressors and coping strategies employed during a vulnerable phase of rehabilitation and can thus provide information that is useful to clinical practice. Background: As of 2015, more than half of U.S. states have legalized, medicalized, or decriminalized marijuana. Objective: This study examined the prevalence and correlates of support for marijuana legalization in a national sample of young adults and the intention to use marijuana more frequently if it were legalized. Methods: Data were from Wave 7 (weighted N = 3532) of the Truth Initiative Young Adult Cohort, a national sample of men and women aged 18–34. We assessed demographics, past 30-day substance (alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, other drug use), depression and anxiety, social smoking, marijuana harm perceptions (relative to cigarettes), and state-level marijuana policies as correlates of support for marijuana legalization and intentions to use marijuana more often if it were legalized. Multivariable models of correlates of support for legalization and intentions to use marijuana were conducted separately for the full sample and for nonmarijuana users. Results: Weighted estimates showed that 39% of the full sample and 9% of nonmarijuana users supported marijuana legalization. Multivariable models showed that lower marijuana harm perceptions and lifetime and past 30-day tobacco use were common predictors of support for marijuana legalization and intentions to use marijuana among non-users of marijuana. Conclusions/Importance: Over a third of the sample supported marijuana legalization. Tobacco use and perceptions that marijuana is less harmful than cigarettes were robust risk correlates of support for marijuana legalization and intentions to use more frequently among nonusers. Purpose:To test a model of child, family and service determinants of participation in family and recreational activities for young children with cerebral palsy (CP). Methods:Participants were a convenience sample of 429 children (242 males) with CP, aged 18 to 60 months, representing all levels of the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). Children were divided into two groups by GMFCS levels, levels I to II and levels III to V. Data on impairments and gross motor function were collected by therapists; parents provided information about children’s health conditions and adaptive behaviour. Seven months later, parents reported on family life and services received. One year after the beginning of the study, parents reported their children’s participation. Data from the two groups of children were analysed separately using structural equation modelling. Results:The model explained 35% and 40% of the variance of frequency of participation in family and recreation and 28% and 38% of enjoyment in participation, for the two groups of children, respectively. Children’s adaptive behaviour, family ecology, and number of community recreational programs were associated with the frequency of participation for both groups. Gross motor function was only associated with the frequency of participation for children in levels III–V. Adaptive behaviour was associated with enjoyment for both groups. The extent services met children’s needs was associated with enjoyment for children in levels I to II and family ecology was a determinant of enjoyment for children in levels III to V. Conclusion:Supporting children’s adaptive behaviour, family ecology, and access to community recreational programmes may foster participation in family and recreational activities for young children with CP.Implications for RehabilitationParticipation in family and recreational activities for young children with CP is complex and influenced by child, family and environmental factors.Practitioners are encouraged to support children’s adaptive behaviour and access to community programs and family relationships, involvement in community activities and expectations of their children.Optimizing gross motor function for children who have limitations in self-mobility may enhance their participation in family and recreational activities.For children with a good prognosis for walking, providing services perceived by parents to meet their children’s needs may enhance children’s enjoyment of participation. In cremation rituals in the Netherlands, music plays an important role. However, what exactly this role is remains unclear. In the literature on cremation rituals, music has received little attention up to now. A computational analysis of music played during cremations and a subsequent comparison of the results of this analysis with results of the analysis of two other playlists containing popular music shows that the crematorium playlist differs significantly from the other two playlists. The music played at cremations does indeed have specific properties, properties that correspond to notions typically expected at cremations, making it suitable for the occasion. Theories of the relation between musical properties and emotions indicate that the music played as part of cremation rituals can be qualified as serene, solemn and tender. Limited tools assess positive development through university sport. Such a tool was validated in this investigation using two independent samples of Canadian university athletes. In Study 1, 605 athletes completed 99 survey items drawn from the Youth Experience Scale (YES 2.0), and separate a priori measurement models were evaluated (i.e., 99 items, YES 2.0, YES for Sport [YES-S]). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) results indicated issues with model fit. Post-hoc modifications improved fit, resulting in a 46-item, 9-factor model with five positive and four negative dimensions. In Study 2, 511 athletes completed the same items. The resultant model was confirmed using both CFA (comparative fit index [CFI] = .911, standardized root mean square residual [SRMR] = .056, root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = .040) and ESEM (CFI = .956, SRMR = .023, RMSEA = .034). Although parental distress and child distress have been linked in families of children with cancer, how these associations change over time is unknown. The present study examined how the amount of time elapsed since the child's diagnosis moderates the associations between self-reported parent and child symptoms of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress in 255 parent-child dyads. Time since diagnosis moderated the associations between parental symptoms and childreported anxiety and post-traumatic stress. Dyads farther out from diagnosis exhibited stronger associations between parental and child symptoms. Cognitive impairment (CI) is an important feature of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Yogic relaxation techniques have been found useful in improving various cognitive domains in health and disease. Eighteen subjects (13 females) in the age range of 51.5 ± 12.72 years with the diagnosis of RRMS by a neurologist (McDonald Criteria 2010) since last 18.16 ± 12.59 years were recruited into the study from a neuro-rehabilitation centre in Germany. Assessments were done before and immediately after two randomly allocated 30-min sessions of yogic relaxation: Cyclic Meditation (CM) and SR (supine rest orshavasana). Assessments were done for attention, psychomotor performance, information processing speed, executive functions, and immediate and delayed recall using standard psychometric tools. RMANOVA was applied to analyse the data using SPSS version 10. Both CM and SR sessions improved scores on Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) (p < 0.01) and Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) (p < 0.05). There was a significantly better performance in Trail Making Test (TMT)-A and forward digit span (FDS) after CM as compared to SR (p < 0.01). Yogic relaxation techniques may have an immediate enhancing effect on processing speed, psychomotor performance, and recall of RRMS patients. Some yoga-based practices have been found to be useful for patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The authors could not find a validated yoga therapy module available for OCD. This study attempted to formulate a generic yoga-based intervention module for OCD. A yoga module was designed based on traditional and contemporary yoga literature. The module was sent to 10 yoga experts for content validation. The experts rated the usefulness of the practices on a scale of 1–5 (5 = extremely useful). The final version of the module was pilot-tested on patients with OCD (n = 17) for both feasibility and effect on symptoms. Eighty-eight per cent (22 out of 25) of the items in the initial module were retained, with modifications in the module as suggested by the experts along with patients’ inputs and authors’ experience. The module was found to be feasible and showed an improvement in symptoms of OCD on total Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (YBOCS) score (p = 0.001). A generic yoga therapy module for OCD was validated by experts in the field and found feasible to practice in patients. This study examined the predictive ability of theory of planned behaviour (TPB) regarding intention to share needles among injection drug users (IDUs). The data were derived from 109 IDUs in Montreal, Canada, and collected by means of self-administered questionnaires. The Spearman's correlation was used to see the relations between the predicting variables and the intention. Furthermore, ordinal regression analysis was conducted to see different predictive possibilities of TPB components. Perceiving needle sharing as a good practice and careless craving for drugs were significantly positively correlated with the intention to share syringe with others in the future 8 months. Ordinal regression results showed that indirect perceived behavioural control as being the strongest predictor of intention. Purpose:The purpose of this study is to investigate how aspects of a teaching performance evaluation system may affect faculty’s teaching performance improvement as perceived by residents over time. Methods:Prospective multicenter cohort study conducted in The Netherlands between 1 September 2008 and 1 February 2013. Nine hundred and one residents and 1068 faculty of 65 teaching programs in 16 hospitals were invited to annually (self-) evaluate teaching performance using the validated, specialty-specific System for Evaluation of Teaching Qualities (SETQ). We used multivariable adjusted generalized estimating equations to analyze the effects of (i) residents’ numerical feedback, (ii) narrative feedback, and (iii) faculty’s participation in self-evaluation on residents’ perception of faculty’s teaching performance improvement. Results:The average response rate over three years was 69% for faculty and 81% for residents. Higher numerical feedback scores were associated with residents rating faculty as having improved their teaching performance one year following the first measurement (regression coefficient,b: 0.077; 95% CI: 0.002–0.151;p = 0.045), but not after the second wave of receiving feedback and evaluating improvement. Receiving more suggestions for improvement was associated with improved teaching performance in subsequent years. Conclusions: Evaluation systems on clinical teaching performance appear helpful in enhancing teaching performance in residency training programs. We compared mothers who exercised predominantly in group settings, those who exercised predominantly in individual settings, and those who exercised equally in group and individual contexts among the following: (a) satisfaction of basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness); (b) self-determined exercise motivation; and (c) psychological well-being. With clear implications for mothers’ exercise interventions we found that exercising either predominantly in group contexts or in mixed group and individual settings was associated with mothers having significantly higher satisfaction of basic psychological needs and self-determined exercise motivation than those exercising predominantly alone. In this article, we describe the results of an analysis of the association between mental health and reproductive health service use from a sample of Congolese refugee women residing in short- and long-term camps in Rwanda, with a post-hoc qualitative potion added to expand upon the data-based results. The multi-dimensionality of Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP) has been acknowledged by the use of correlated-factor model and second-order model. In this study, the authors critically endorse the bifactor model, as a substitute to address the multi-dimensionality of PSPP. To cross-validate the models, analyses are conducted first in exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) framework with a randomly selected subsample and then in confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) framework with a second subsample. Results from both ESEM and CFA analyses suggest that bifactor model is the best-fitted model. A general physical self-esteem factor and four domain specific factors are identified with the bifactor model. Coefficient omega hierarchical of the general factor is .86. Theof the specific factors are .19, .20, .59, and .29, respectively. Gender difference at both general factor level and domain specific factor level is examined within the bifactor model.
