Limited studies exist exploring employers' capacity in hiring and supporting employees on the autism spectrum, and even fewer have considered interventions targeting employers' skills and knowledge in enhancing employment opportunities. In response to this need, the Integrated Employment Success Tool (IESTTM) was developed and its effectiveness established in a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Furthermore, a process evaluation was conducted to determine the usability and implementation of the IESTTM. The process evaluation was conducted to determine employers' perceived usability, implementation, and perceived barriers and facilitators in using the IESTTM. Employers (N = 29) provided their feedback via an online questionnaire. Of these, 11 participants were interviewed, further exploring their experiences. Data were analysed via descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. While employers' frequency and usage of the IESTTM varied across workplaces, it was predominantly used to increase employers' knowledge of autism and implement workplace strategies. A major barrier was the paper-based format of the intervention, with more than 60% of employers indicating the need for an online version. Amendments to various state laws have made it easier for cisgendered lesbian, bisexual and queer (LBQ) women to access Australian fertility clinics. When women conceive through clinics, they generally use intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilisation (IVF). IUI is cheaper and requires less invasive medical intervention than IVF. A recent survey found that almost 60% of Australian cisgendered LBQ women who conceived with clinical assistance did so using IVF, despite most presenting to clinics without a diagnosis of infertility and seeking donor sperm only. In this paper, based on 20 interviews with Australian clinicians who treat LBQ patients seeking pregnancy, we explore potential explanations for why over half of LBQ women using Australian fertility clinics to conceive used IVF rather than IUI. A 'perfect storm' of factors appears to converge in this tendency. Although some LBQ women are purposefully choosing IVF to achieve biological relatedness for two mothers, other pressures toward high intervention conceptions include the distinction between 'social' and 'clinical' infertility by Medicare (the Australian national health insurance scheme), the relative profitability of IVF procedures and issues with the supply and quality of donor sperm. Accessing sperm from clinics appears to set some Australian women without male partners on a potentially unnecessary path to a high intervention and costly conception. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to describe how occupational therapists working in acute care settings in Australia assess cognitive function in patients with TBI, the influences on assessment choice, and clinician perceptions of performance-based assessment. An online survey was completed by 81 occupational therapists. The most common method of cognitive assessment was reported as non-standardized observation of functional tasks (94.7%), followed by carer-report / self-report (93%). Despite their being positive perceptions of performance-based assessment there was limited use in practice. Objective: The following mixed methods study aimed to decipher the factors influencing the psychological wellbeing of language brokers. Specifically, ethnic identity, attitudes towards brokering, family connectedness, and high intensity brokering situations were examined. Method: One hundred and twenty four individuals completed surveys in either paper pencil format or online. Six survey participants also volunteered to participate in semi‐structured interviews. Results: The quantitative results revealed ethnic identity and attitudes towards brokering positively correlated with psychological wellbeing, no support was found for family connectedness or for brokering in high intensity contexts. The moderating effects of ethnic identity, attitudes, and family connectedness on the relationship between high intensity brokering and wellbeing were not supported by the quantitative analysis. Emerging themes from the six interviews provided insight into familial relationships, community connection, and multicultural Australia with the sub‐themes of acceptance and non‐acceptance of diversity. Conclusion: These results support the current policies requiring health services and legal aid to provide free interpreters for individuals not fluent in English. Additionally, these results my assist in government bodies and policy makers providing additional support and resources to language brokers in the home setting and the community. Background: Undergraduate preparation is important in ensuring health care professionals are prepared to identify and respond to intimate partner violence (IPV). Previous studies confirm this education is highly variable and IPV-related content remains marginalised in undergraduate nursing, midwifery and paramedicine curricula. Aim: To investigate frontline academics' attitudes and beliefs in relation to the inclusion of IPV-related content in the aforementioned degrees. Design: A large multi-phase mixed methods Australian case study of Australian undergraduate nursing, midwifery and paramedicine degrees. In this paper, components of the survey and interviews from this study will be reported on. Methods: Quantitative comparative analysis of a 51-item on-line survey and qualitative thematic analysis of guided conversational interviews. Results: Across Australian universities IPV remains poorly embedded in nursing, midwifery and paramedicine programmes. Academics report a range of barriers to such inclusion, including an already overcrowded curriculum, a lack of confident and competent academics to teach this content area and a lack of support for this content inclusion. One factor statistically significant in its association with non-inclusion of IPV-related content was academic attitudes of professional role resistance. Gender was also identified as a significant factor associated with non-inclusion and resistant professional attitudes. Qualitative interviews revealed that only six of the 18 participants identified IPV-related care as within their scope of practice, with professional role resistance a common theme identified. Conclusion: Though professional organisation and policy makers now advocate for the inclusion of IPV-related content in the undergraduate preparation of nurses and midwives, work remains to address gendered and resistant attitudes amongst academics. This paper describes the formative, process and short term impact evaluation of sexuality and relationships education (SRE) training for teachers in Western Australia (WA) over a three year period. The training represents one component of a broader project, the aims of which are to improve teacher’s confidence and skills in delivering SRE, and to support schools to implement effective comprehensive SRE. Formative evaluation conducted prior to the development of the training, found although most respondents were relatively confident and skilled in facilitating SRE, the need for ongoing professional development was highlighted, especially in areas such as gender diversity, pornography, sexting, violence and working with specific groups. Training focusing on the new Australian Health and Physical Education curriculum and mandatory assessment was identified as a need. Workshop evaluation found statistically significant improvements in attitudes towards SRE and increased comfort in teaching SRE, facilitating discussion and facilitating skills and activities, after the workshop. The evaluation identified the need for an integrated and coordinated whole school approach and efforts to engage teachers with lower levels of confidence in teaching SRE. Changes to the Australian Curriculum provide opportunities to enhance the development of SRE in schools. Longer-term impact evaluation is required to identify whole school changes. Statistics on causes of death gathered by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2010) report that suicide was the leading cause amongst young men in Australia between the ages of 15-24. The figures have been similarly high for over a decade. In Australia these alarming statistics have led to the funding of a range of programmes tackling youth suicide and more recently programmes that are aimed at improving help-seeking behaviours of young men. The programme reported in this paper is one such programme that is working with young men in the building and construction industry who are regarded at even greater risk of poor mental health outcomes. The research that was undertaken uncovered some of the impact of a universal programme on improving the protective factors of young men in this industry. Young men can present themselves in a very positive light as robust and resilient human beings, contrary to much of the research that has been undertaken with a focus on young men in building and construction and living in rural and remote communities. Over the past two decades there has been a growing awareness that sport may not be a positive experience for all children. For example, we know that some children experience sexual abuse in the context of organised sport, and that these offences are often committed by trusted adults, including coaches and club officials. However, less attention has been given to the physical abuse of child athletes. This paper presents a study that explored children's experiences of organised sport, as recounted by young people between the ages of 18 and 25 years in Australia. The study explored the experience of child physical abuse in organised sport including violence, overtraining, and training while injured. A mixed methods research design produced 107 survey responses and 10 in-depth interviews with young adults. Most respondents reported the positive impact that participating in sport had had on their development, but more than a third of the respondents also described experiences of overtraining, being forced to train when injured or of direct physical violence. Drawing upon a thematic analysis of the qualitative data, a conceptual model has been developed and is presented to assist in the understanding of the dynamic of secrecy, which may facilitate ongoing physical harm to children in this context. This paper examines the impact in Australia of the global financial crisis on the baby boom cohort approaching later life. Data from national focus groups of people aged 50 to 64 years (N = 73), conducted in late 2008, found widespread but variable concern and uncertainty concerning work and retirement plans and experiences. A national survey (N = 1,009) of those aged 50 to 64 years in mid-2009 reported lower levels of financial satisfaction compared with other life domains; many planned to postpone retirement. Findings are interpreted in the context of policies and markets that differed significantly from those in the United States, notwithstanding the global nature of the financial crisis. This paper presents the results of a study seeking to examine the experiences of people with intellectual disability in a sporting context. The research design employed an online, interviewer-completed questionnaire in both a standard and an easy English version designed for administration by a third party for those requiring assistance to respond. Questions sought both quantitative responses about levels of participation and qualitative responses about constraints experienced and benefits received from participation. The results of the study show high levels of participation reported by people who are independent or have lower to moderate support needs, whereas people with high to very high support needs had substantially lower levels of participation. Constraints are examined for both those who participate in sport and those who do not. For those who do participate, the benefits were identified as overwhelmingly social in nature, including belonging, companionship and achievement. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Developing evidence-based or research-informed approaches to practice in human services requires research-oriented cultures in organizations. One feature of this is frontline staff that are engaged with and supportive of evidence-based practice (EBP) approaches. This paper reports on a study of staff support for EBP in an organization where senior management made a commitment to EBP. Utilizing several measures of support for EBP, including two standardized scales, the study found strong support for EBP. Findings indicate that, in this organization, being female, having higher qualifications, and being at a higher level in the organization are associated with greater support for EBP and that years employed in the organization is negatively correlated with support for EBP. Background: Over the last decade several innovative approaches to enhance students' transition to graduate nurse year have been implemented or piloted. This paper describes a study that investigated how the social practices of clinical partnership placement model underpin workplace learning for undergraduate students as they transitioned to graduate. Methods: A mixed method approach was utilized comprising individual interviews with students, observation of clinical workplaces across six different areas of nursing practice, student surveys of the clinical learning environment and participant workshops. Results: Three themes were identified that influenced participants' preparedness for work and enhanced the transition into the workplace: 'organizational familiarity', 'continuity' and 'social participation'. Conclusion: A clinical partnership model offers a degree of work readiness for novices when commencing their professional practice role. Tobacco-related conditions contribute significantly to the health gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Smoking rates in Australia's Indigenous population has failed to decline even though smoking rates in Australia have declined in general. In some Indigenous communities, smoking rates remain very high. Studies indicate that up to 50% of survivors of acquired brain injury (ABI) experience persistent changes in sexuality. However, research on clinicians' perspectives in addressing sexuality issues post-ABI is limited. This study explored the attitudes and approaches, barriers and facilitators, and training preferences of Australian clinicians in addressing sexuality in individuals post-ABI. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 20 Australian multi-disciplinary clinicians from a related survey study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and qualitatively analysed using thematic analysis. Three broad themes were identified: ABI results in multi-faceted changes in sexuality; there is a fundamental discomfort in talking about sexuality; and, strategies proposed by clinicians may help to improve sexuality support. Participants also provided suggestions for sexuality training, which they believed should start at university. Most clinicians are aware of sexuality issues post-ABI but fail to adequately address sexuality in individuals post-ABI due to personal levels of discomfort, perpetuated by institutional factors. Therefore, participants believe that changes made at individual and institutional levels may increase sexuality support for individuals with ABI. However, further research on the causes and treatment of sexual problems and patient perspectives is required to provide the evidence-based guidelines and training programs that clinicians require. Up to half of individuals experience changes in sexuality after ABI that restrict quality of life and relationships. The consequences of ABI and their impacts on sexuality are understood by Australian clinicians but remain largely unaddressed due to individual discomfort, perpetuated by institutional factors. This study suggests that professional training targeted towards understanding, assessing and treating sexuality issues post-ABI may help to reduce the discomfort. To determine the knowledge and confidence of physiotherapists in managing knee osteoarthritis (OA) and patellofemoral pain (PFP); and explore their learning behaviors and preferences related to the management of these knee conditions. One hundred and sixteen Australian and Canadian Physiotherapists were recruited via social media, e-mail, and an online course. Part 1: Quantitative involved an online survey evaluating knowledge of evidence and confidence in providing treatments for knee OA and PFP. Part 2: Qualitative involved semi-structured interviews with 13 participants exploring current practice and learning needs, that were analyzed using an initial framework structured on interview questions, followed by inductive approach to identify additional themes. Awareness regarding evidence supporting exercise for knee OA and PFP was good (89–96%), and qualitative themes indicated physiotherapists emphasized exercise-therapy and education. Perceived value of passive treatments and surgery varied. Preference for face-to-face workshops to address learning needs, alongside describing time and cost barriers to access them, emerged from qualitative findings. Online learning formats were viewed as convenient, but not as effective as face-to-face learning. Knowledge and confidence related to interventions for knee OA and PFP of Australian and Canadian physiotherapist participants broadly aligns with guidelines. This article outlines social work practitioners' understandings and practices of self-care, which consider the influence of technology. As part of an exploratory study on the use and experiences of technology by Australian social work practitioners, we examined implications for worker self-care. The study found that technology presents unique challenges and opportunities for self-care as social workers straddled multiple and contradictory conceptualisations of technology in the field. The use of technology raised mixed understandings of self-care, with social workers outlining the need for self-care to protect them from organisational reach and as a mechanism or space for self-care itself. Human Services agencies use a wide range of software systems to manage caseloads, maintain records, deliver services to clients, and for interagency communication. Some systems are generic, such as Word or Excel, while some are specialized to the organization, such as specialized databases for tracking case notes. Some software systems are shared across organizations. We surveyed nearly 40 Australian Human Services agencies to ascertain the range of software currently in use by agencies and their opinions on it, with a view to identifying promising new Human Services applications. We interviewed representatives from a selection of smaller agencies. This resulted in detailed feedback on key issues to consider when developing and deploying new Human Services software. To enhance understanding of access to rehabilitation services in Australian and New Zealand acute care facilities for older adults living with dementia and/or living in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) following a hip fracture. Information on hip fracture rehabilitation was obtained from an online survey of 40 health professionals who were members of the Australian and New Zealand Hip Fracture Registry Network. This information was supplemented with key informant interviews with five geriatricians and five rehabilitation physicians. Availability of hip fracture rehabilitation services differed by region and country. Around one in 10 respondents indicated that their facility had specific rehabilitation protocols for people living in RACFs or who were living with dementia. Barriers to providing hip fracture rehabilitation were commonly related to availability of resources. Rehabilitation pathways were determined according to individual patient characteristics and perceived potential benefit. Decision making was mainly informed by the patient's pre-fracture morbidity and residence. Three key themes and nine sub-themes emerged from the interviews. The development of consistent decision criteria and pathways for access to hip fracture rehabilitation could provide a standard approach to access to rehabilitation, particularly for patients with cognitive impairment and/or who reside in RACFs. Need to establish evidence-based criteria for patients who will benefit from hip fracture rehabilitation. Consistent decision criteria for access to hip fracture rehabilitation will assist in guiding a standard approach to providing rehabilitation, particularly for patients with cognitive impairment and/or who reside in RACFs. There is a need to ensure the availability of physiotherapy services in RACFs to assist with rehabilitation provision. In Australia, school-based immunisation programmes (SBIP) provide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations to secondary school students. However, despite such free programmes, around 20% of girls and 25% of boys do not complete all doses. This formative study identified barriers and enablers to vaccine completion. Online surveys were conducted with senior school administrators and nurses from Western Australian secondary schools across all three school sectors. Year 8 students participated in focus group discussions. Parents participated in one-on-one interviews (n = 22). Administrators were supportive of vaccination and the SBIP. Nurses and administrators perceived lack of parental awareness, issues around consent and school absenteeism as the main barriers to completion. Parent and student knowledge concerning HPV, the HPV vaccine and immunisation in general were low. Despite this, students and parents were supportive of the SBIP and wanted the opportunity to learn more about HPV, the vaccination and immunisation in general. Purpose: To determine the clinical practices of Australian speech-language pathologists in the management of communication disorders in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) and their perspectives on service provision. Method: A cross-sectional, mix-methods online survey was conducted. Nonprobability, purposive sampling was utilised to recruit speech-language pathologists who currently work with PwPD. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were employed. Result: Ninety-nine clinicians responded. Most offered services for both motor speech and cognitive-communication disorders, but a greater focus on the motor speech disorder was evident. A range of impairment and functional assessments and interventions were reported. Therapy was most commonly delivered one session a week over 4 or 6 weeks. Service, client and evidence barriers in the management of both communication disorders were identified. Most clinicians felt PwPD accessed communication services at stages later than optimal, they recognised a need to improve their services in varying degrees (92.3%), and believed not enough services exist for PwPD in Australia (78%). Cognitive-communication management was the highest requested area for further research evidence. Conclusion: This study captured the current practices of Australian speech-language pathologists in the management of communication disorders in PwPD. Objective: Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) has demonstrated effectiveness as a therapeutic approach for various clinical disorders, but little data exist on the extent to which it is covered in accredited postgraduate clinical psychology training programs. Data were gathered regarding aspects of CBT orientation in terms of influence, content, delivery of general programs, and administration of coursework components. Method: Responses to a semi‐structured interview of 28 clinical program directors of Australian accredited courses (representing 72% of accredited courses) were analysed as part of a larger project titled "Nationwide Training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy." Results: CBT was consistently included in training programs, but there was marked variability in the coverage of CBT competencies. Greater emphasis was placed on foundational CBT competencies (57% of programs indicating basic CBT skills were covered to a "large" or "very large extent"), in contrast to problem specific competencies (11% of programs covered to a "large" or "very large extent"). Programs with a stronger orientation towards evidence‐based practice reported greater coverage of Roth and Pilling's CBT competency framework (r = 0.62, p < 0.01). Conclusion: The findings suggest that core CBT skills are covered, but there is an opportunity for these clinical training programs to enhance their coursework content to ensure that their trainees are adequately prepared to deliver CBT for different disorders. Institutional Review Boards have expressed concern that research into sensitive topics such as mental disorder will cause participants undue distress. This study investigated the emotional responses of 5,220 Australians to a survey on mental-health-related discrimination. Participants were interviewed about their mental health and experiences of discrimination across 10 life domains and then the emotional impacts of the survey. Results suggested that a minority experienced a negative reaction (2.8% felt depressed, 5.3% distressed, 9.5% reported intrusion on privacy, 2.5% regretted participation) in contrast to 88% reporting positive experiences. Background: Adults with intellectual disability (ID) experience poorer overall health than the wider population. Identification of personal, support service and lifestyle factors affecting health status will provide opportunities to improve health outcomes. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional survey of adults with ID. Interviews were conducted between January and July 2013. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using self- or proxy-reported general health as the dependent variable. Results: “Not good” health was independently associated with increasing age, financial hardship, smoking, and living in a home of their own. Physical exercise was inversely associated with not good health. Conclusions: Subjective health may be improved by attention to the factors identified in this study. This could include closer monitoring of the health of people with ID as they age and if they live in a home of their own. Similarly, targeted programs promoting physical activity and smoking reduction could improve general health for adults with ID. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BackgroundWe investigated the context for translating evidence-based early intervention for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) into real world settings through a case study of a regional town characterised as disadvantaged. MethodsData were from interview surveys of five managers reporting on 15 services, and surveys from 19 practitioners and 15 mothers of young children with ASD. ResultsThe 15 services were multidisciplinary, offering diagnostic assessments (n = 2) and interventions delivered in the home and centres. Children were diagnosed at a mean age of 3 years; access to intervention was delayed and mostly limited to one session every two weeks. Some families travelled substantial distances to services, driving on average 50 minutes each way. Practitioners described intervention strategies in broad terms, rather than name interventions. ConclusionsServices available to young children with ASD in this town were far removed from good practice in terms of early diagnosis, and intervention frequency and intensity. Current therapy to slow disease progression in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) entails regular intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injections, often indefinitely. Little is known about the burden imposed on patients by this repetitive treatment schedule and how this can be best managed. The aim of this study was to explore the psychosocial impact of repeated intravitreal injections on patients with neovascular AMD. Forty patients (16 males, 24 females) with neovascular AMD undergoing anti-VEGF treatment were recruited using purposive sampling from a private ophthalmology practice and public hospital in Melbourne. Patients were surveyed using the Macular Disease Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (MacTSQ; Bradley, Health Psychology Research Unit, Surrey, England) and underwent semi-structured, one-on-one interviews. Interview topics were: treatment burden and satisfaction; tolerability; barriers to adherence; treatment motivation; and patient education. Interviews were audio recorded and thematic analysis performed using NVivo 10 (QSR International, Doncaster, Australia). Patients recognised the importance of treatment to preserve eyesight, yet experienced significant psychosocial and practical burden from the treatment schedule. Important issues included treatment-related anxiety, financial considerations and transport burden placed on relatives or carers. Many patients were restricted to sedentary activities post-injection owing to treatment side effects. Patients prioritised treatment, often sacrificing family, travel and social commitments owing to a fear of losing eyesight if treatment was not received. Whilst anti-VEGF injections represent the current mainstay of treatment for neovascular AMD, the ongoing treatment protocol imposes significant burden on patients. An understanding of the factors that contribute to the burden of treatment may help inform strategies to lessen its impact and assist patients to better manage the challenges of treatment. Objective: Family carers of people with dementia have higher than average rates of suicidal ideation, but there has been no research on homicidal ideation in this population. The aim of this study was to explore thoughts of homicide in family carers of people with dementia. Method: A descriptive qualitative approach was taken. Twenty-one Australian carers (7 men, 14 women) participated in individual, in-depth interviews and the transcripts were analysed thematically. Results: Seven themes were identified in the data – active thoughts of homicide; understanding homicidal thoughts in others; passive thoughts of death; euthanasia; homicidal thoughts in other caregiving situations; abuse; and disclosing thoughts of harm. Two of the 21 participants had actively contemplated the homicide of their care recipient, four expressed a passive desire for the care recipient's death, and four reported physically or verbally abusing the care recipient. Only one carer had previously disclosed these experiences. Conclusion: Homicidal ideation is a real and significant phenomenon among family carers of people with dementia. Service providers and health professionals are encouraged to identify and support carers contemplating homicide, but to do so in a way that recognises the broader social context of carer burden. Background: While survey data can provide information on alcohol products favoured by those who drink to intoxication, it is more difficult to get information on what they drink when they are consuming at a level which places them at high risk of harm. Objectives: To use complementary quantitative and qualitative data to investigate what young risky drinkers drink, and what they drink when they are drinking heavily. Methods: Three thousand, two hundred and twenty-six respondents aged 18–24 from the Australian state of Victoria answered questions in the Victorian youth alcohol and drug survey on their drinking habits and usual drinking choice. Sixty qualitative interviews were also conducted with Victorian 18–24-year olds. In each study, regular drinkers to acute intoxication (RDAIs), those who drank more than 10 Australian standard drinks in a session and drank to the point of forgetting afterwards, were compared to those who did not meet both of these criteria. Results: RDAIs were more likely to drink beer, cask wine, spirits and ready to drink spirits; however, they also consumed more drink types than non-RDAIs. Qualitative interviews highlighted spirits, particularly shots, as a popular drink of choice when intoxication was the aim and or/outcome. Conclusion: Young people appear to prefer spirits when intending to get drunk, however, there is also evidence to show that RDAIs will drink whatever is to hand. The study investigates illicit drug use in the night-time economy and its association with intoxication, harm and violence experienced by licensed venue patrons. Five-minute structured interviews measuring event-level data were conducted over a 15-month period (March 2010-June 2011) between 9 pm and 1 am. A total of 3949 patrons were interviewed in Newcastle and Geelong, Australian regional cities close to capital cities. Mean age was 24.3 years old (SD=5.8) and 54.4% were male. Six percent of the sample self-reported consuming illicit substances at the time of interview; 7.3% at nightclub venues, 11.8% in the street, 5.5% in pubs and 2.8% in bars. Amphetamines, methamphetamines and ecstasy accounted for two-thirds of substance use. Patrons who reported consuming illicit drugs were 1.90 times as likely to be involved in a prior violent incident (OR 1.35-2.70 95% CI, p < 0.001). Participants who reported illicit drug use at the time of interview were likely to be 0.89 ( p < 0.001) points higher on self-reported intoxication scale (0-10), and were more likely to have engaged in high risk alcohol consumption χ2 (1, n = 3396) = 9.63, p < 0.01) than those who did not report using drugs. Debates on human rights and discrimination regarding housing and disability need to emphasise community care and inclusion as principles for improving policy. A qualitative study of Australian mortgage default reveals special difficulties for households with a member with a disability; that is, illness, impairment or injury limiting everyday activities and enduring for several months. Interviews showed that such households adopted similar strategies to other mortgagors with serious financial difficulties but tended to have fewer and less attractive options. Aims: Determine the prevalence and frequency at which injecting drug users (IDU) continue to inject whilst incarcerated and to identify factors associated with in-prison injecting. Design: A nationally coordinated cross-sectional convenience sample. Participants: A total of 355 regular IDUs who had been imprisoned within the past 10 years. Measurements: Data concerning demographics, drug use history and injection whilst imprisoned were collected by participant self-report. Findings: Almost half, 46% ( n = 162), of the participants reported that they had ever injected whilst imprisoned. Most of these ( n = 150; 42% of all participants) reported injecting during their last imprisonment. Factors identified as significantly associated with prison injecting were being male, receiving income from criminal activity in the month prior to interview and length of last sentence. Frequency of injection varied from isolated instances to multiple times daily. Half ( n = 75) of those who injected during their most recent imprisonment reported injecting at a lower frequency while incarcerated than they did in the month prior to survey. Two individuals reported initiation to injection during their most recent period of imprisonment. Conclusions: Most IDUs who experience imprisonment either suspend injecting whilst incarcerated or reduce the frequency at which they inject. Objective: This exploratory study examined the potential of hip hop youth dance culture to engage disadvantaged youth in positive social activities within their community. An innovative 12-week program, entitled HYPE: Hip Hop = Healthy, was conducted annually over two years and involved over 600 high school students. Research design: A qualitative, cross-sectional study design was used to examine participants' perceptions about the impact of the program on their well-being. Method: Survey data were gathered regarding the impact of the program on participants' physical, psychological and social well-being. Results: The vast majority of participants reported that HYPE was a positive experience and felt it offered a valuable opportunity to engage both with their peers and the broader community. Conclusions: The findings support the notion that the arts are a valuable tool in health promotion for engaging youth in positive, community-based activities that they enjoy. Background: This article compares public attitudes toward the use of prescription drugs for cognitive enhancement with the use of performance enhancing drugs in sport. We explore attitudes toward the acceptability of both practices; the extent to which familiarity with cognitive enhancement is related to its perceived acceptability; and relationships between the acceptability of cognitive enhancement and legalized doping in sport. Methods: A survey was administered through a computer-assisted telephone interviewing system to members of the Australian general public aged 18–101 years in the state of Queensland. Results: Of 1,265 participants, 7% agreed that cognitive enhancement is acceptable; 2.4% of the total sample said they had taken prescription drugs to enhance their concentration or alertness in the absence of a diagnosed disorder, and a further 8% said they knew someone who had done so. These participants were twice as likely to think cognitive enhancement was acceptable. Only 3.6% of participants agreed that people who play professional sport should be allowed to use performance-enhancing drugs if they wanted to. Participants who found cognitive enhancement acceptable were 9.5 times more likely to agree with legalized doping. Conclusions: Policies that facilitated the use of prescription drugs by healthy people for cognitive enhancement or permitted performance-enhancing drugs in sport would be at odds with the attitudes of the vast majority of our participants. The present article provides a literature review and describes a study examining the effect of teaching young children (7–12 years of age) with social and emotional difficulties to use intelligent behaviours habitually when faced with a problem. While embedding a ‘habits of mind’ (HOM) approach into the whole-school programme has become popular in many Australian schools, as it is in the UK and USA, there is limited research on its impact on children who display challenging behaviours. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from an Australian primary school through teacher and parent workshops, surveys and interviews with staff, students and parents. The results of this small preliminary study indicate an increase for each of the HOM investigated, with a general decline in problematic behaviours. The most prominent reported changes were increased persistence at a given task, followed by applying past knowledge to new situations, listening to others with understanding and empathy, improvements in managing impulsivity, and thinking flexibly. This article seeks to develop norms for the use of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Neuropsychological (CERAD-NP) in an Irish sample, and to assess the impact of age and education on performance. A survey style design was employed. Norms for the sample (N = 99) are compared to norms reported in United States, Australian, and Finnish studies. Performance was largely in keeping with US and Australian, but not Finnish, samples. Education level was found to affect memory and constructional praxis. The norms reported in the original US study seem appropriate to the Irish context, with the exception of confrontational naming. As this dimension has been found to be beneficial in differentiating mild Alzheimer's Disease from normal aging, this should be taken into consideration when using the battery. Surveys of clinical psychologists' self-reports of professional practice exist in Australia and New Zealand, but comparatively little data exist on the training available in universities. The present study was designed to gather data on the training and assessment of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). A semi-structured phone interview was designed for use with clinical psychology training directors, or equivalent, in Australia and New Zealand. Out of a total of 48 universities in the region, 40 clinical directors were successfully contacted: One declined involvement, and 39 agreed to participate, yielding a response rate of 81% (six in New Zealand and 33 in Australia). The data showed that it is common for clinical training programmes in our region to provide clinical trainees with foundational knowledge in CBT (i.e., 29 of the 39 surveyed). However, CBT is mainly incorporated into the auspices of clinical training programmes, there is a wide range of assessment methods to evaluate competence in providing therapy, and relatively few academic units exist that focus exclusively on CBT. Selection of suitable students into graduate medical and specialist health professional courses can be difficult. Historically, selection of students was primarily based on prior academic performance. Recently, however, more emphasis has been placed on considering broader academic backgrounds and personal characteristics and attitudes of students, but no reliable measurement tool is available to predict student success and satisfaction with their choice of profession. The aim of this study was to survey practising radiation therapists in Australia to seek their opinions regarding suitable selection criteria for graduate entry radiation therapy (RT) students in order to optimize selection procedures for future applicants. Four hundred questionnaires were sent to nine RT centres in three states within Australia. All nine clinics participated in the survey and 189 questionnaires were returned. Results show that the majority of radiation therapists place a high level of importance upon a sound knowledge of physics and mathematics, as well as life experience, and agree that a visit to an RT clinic plus an interview comprise important components of the selection process. Humanities, psychology and a psychometric test were not viewed as essential entry requirements. Experienced radiation therapists placed less value on academic performance in the primary degree and were more likely to include an interview as a selection criterion than junior practitioners. Empathy for patients was identified as the most important personal attribute. It is thus recommended that not only cognitive but also personal skills be evaluated during the selection of prospective radiation therapists.
