The urban studies literature regularly cites Ruth Glass’s 1964 work without comment as the source of the concept “gentrification” and to reaffirm the premise that gentrification at its core is a purely economic process. This citation practice makes racism, as well as other processes, epiphenomenal. Given the ongoing importance of the term “gentrification” for present-day struggles against racism and displacement, relying uncritically on this 1964 work by Glass does us a disservice. Emerging at a key moment of decolonization, Glass’s concept reflects, without acknowledging, continuing British imperialism and its global transformation. In this paper, I return to the genesis of the concept and put Glass’s work in dialogue with that of Claudia Jones, a Caribbean-born communist exiled in London. This paper’s return to these origins and global conditions demonstrates that uncritically citing Glass continually brings us back to a limited economic understanding of gentrification, which obscures the very real imperialism, racism, and decolonization at its origins and today. Finding a way to make a living may be difficult if one lives in a small island with few possibilities for regular full-time jobs. Focusing on how co-habiting couples negotiate their livelihood options with each other and with the island setting, the paper shows how the local labour market and its inherent (im)possibilities are shaped by a specific history, geography and set of gender relations. Empirically, the paper draws on couple interviews from the Danish island of Læsø, with approximately 1800 inhabitants. The analysis shows how history, traditions, geography and gender relations impact on livelihoods and possibilities for developing new lines of work. It also shows how these factors continuously interact with one another and are negotiated by both individuals and couples. Underscoring the argument that island labour markets are different from mainland labour markets, the analysis suggests that the need for negotiation may be more obvious in an island setting which is demographically and economically under pressure. Islands cannot simply be treated as 'smaller' versions of mainland communities. They pose qualitatively different contexts. The palpable geographic borders of the island community entail that 'everybody knows everybody', thus enhancing visibility of individual choices and roles in the local labour market. Therefore, the impact of intangible factors may be enhanced in island settings, where deviations from tradition become immediately observable as people live in close proximity to one another. Background: Post-war education in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has been labelled in contemporary literature as segregated, where children are divided into three ethnic groups (Bosnian Croats, Bosnian Serbs, and Bosnjaks) and taught an ethnicity-based curriculum that reinforces negative stereotypes of ‘.others’.Aims: The present study examines the content of a large number of textbooks covering all three educational programmes (for 8th and 9th grades, and up to the 4th grade of high school), with the aim of deconstructing the discursive strategies that three ethnic groups use to promote their nationalistic agendas.Methods: The study is based on exploratory content analysis and the identification of dominant codes that characterize the data material.Results: As expected, the results show that selected books powerfully project a strong message of ‘us’ in contrast to ‘them’. However, the narration differs, with Croatian textbooks using distancing, Serbian domination, and Bosnjak denying and possessive strategies. All three build a narrative of (1) celebrating ‘us’, (2) devaluing ‘them’, and (3) being victimized by the two other groups.Conclusions: Recommendations for history textbooks that would be suitable for all children in BiH are made. The planning, designing, management, and operation of water systems has been one of the most important activities throughout the history of humankind. However, as a scientific and applied discipline, it evolved about 70 years ago. The International Commission on Water Resources Systems (ICWRS) has primarily focused on developing and implementing improved methods for water resources management for the benefit of society since the 1970s. This paper reviews the history of the water resources systems (WRS) discipline over these six decades after the 100th anniversary of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) and aims to make a synthesis of the history of ICWRS. The Republic of Serbia inherited two unique reference height systems. The first, the Precise levelling of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy (APL), was a significant undertaking by the Military Geographical Institute from Vienna between 1874 and 1905. The reference surface of the APL, the mean sea level, was determined in Trieste based on a year of tide gauge measurements in 1875. This system, which remained used in Serbia and later in Yugoslavia until 1999, was replaced by the Second High Precision Levelling Network of Yugoslavia, carried out by domestic geodetic service between 1970 and 1973, and the mean sea level was determined based on five tide gauges, epoch 1971,5.Notably, during the execution of levelling measurements no measurements of gravitational acceleration were taken along the levelling lines. As a result, the heights were and continue to be expressed in the normal orthometric (spheroidal) height system, a practice that has endured to this day.This paper meticulously chronicles the most significant stages and characteristics in establishing reference height systems in Serbia's territory. This paper explores what may be happening with information and also with happening itself: those versions of the event, of historicizing, deemed suitable to interrogating information. It pairs Claude Shannon's foundational work on information theory with Martin Heidegger's meditation on technology (and his evolving understanding of history), investigating each in light of the other. For Heidegger, the question concerning technology does not primarily concern an invention or tool, but a mode of revealing or truth. Similarly, Shannon's invention is not a device, but a new theory, a new way of viewing all media. Heidegger's take on technology and Shannon's theorization of information both ultimately rely, however, on events (of communicating and of appropriation, Ereignis, respectively). This permits, by way of conclusion, questioning how our own talk and thinking stand in information's context, as well as our and Heidegger's understanding of epochs and ages themselves. This paper describes the results of a content analysis of the History Channel's religious programming, which shows that roughly 44% of episodes about religion from 1996 to 2020 prioritize violence. Additionally, an ideological critique of 17 selected episodes reveals that non-Christian violence is portrayed as inherent to geographic contexts outside the United States while Christian violence is portrayed as justified, heroic, and exceptional. From this we show how the History Channel's telling of religious history perpetuates the deep and troubling alliance between American identity and violent forms of white, Christian nationalism. It is generally assumed that verbal communication can articulate concepts like 'fact' and 'truth' accurately. However, language is fundamentally inaccurate and ambiguous and it is not possible to express exact propositions accurately in an ambiguous medium. Whether truth exists or not, language cannot express it in any exact way. A major problem for verbal communication is that words are fundamentally differently interpreted by the sender and the receiver. In addition, intrapersonal verbal communication - the voice in our head - is a useless extension to the thought process and results in misunderstanding our own thoughts. The evolvement of language has had a profound impact on human life. Most consequential has been that it allowed people to question the old human rules of behavior - the pre-language way of living. As language could not accurately express the old rules, they lost their authority and disappeared. A long period without any rules of how to live together must have followed, probably accompanied by complete chaos. Later, new rules were devised in language, but the new rules were also questioned and had to be enforced by punishment. Language changed the peaceful human way of living under the old rules into violent and aggressive forms of living under punitive control. Religion then tried to incorporate the old rules into the harsh verbal world. The rules were expressed in language through parables: imaginary beings - the gods - who possessed the power of the old rules, but who could be related to through their human appearance and behavior. Despite substantial evidence that media fans are increasingly travelling to the filming locations for movies and TV series, research on core tribal fan film tourists' travel motivations remains limited. This paper contributes to the scarce literature on this question with a study of the fan tourism phenomenon inspired by the fiction TV series Game of Thrones. The study is based on 68 semi-structured in-depth interviews with fans of the series; specifically, core fan community members who have travelled to one or more of the series' filming locations. A thematic analysis of the interview responses reveals three main travel motivations: affective identification with characters; the existence of parallels between fiction and history; and the desire to feel part of a collective identity. The findings suggest that tourism motivated by Game of Thrones is the result of a profound emotional and narrative attachment to the series on the part of fans, with a combination of playful and serious elements. On the theoretical level, this paper contributes to the scholarly literature on fan film tourism. This paper examines the relationship between politics and history in Chile in the 1930s. It analyses how Conservative circles, including politicians, members of the Catholic Church, and historians expressed concern about the absence of a real sense of nationhood during this period. It argues that these people articulated a shared discourse that revealed the value of national history as a way to recover traditional political and moral values to bolster a sense of civic nationalism in society. By analysing newspapers, magazines and parliamentary debates, the paper focuses on the role played by these Conservative individuals in the public commemorations of the 1833 constitution and the nineteenth-century statesman Diego Portales (1793–1837). Electra was developed by an unknown man, Electra01. Following its emergence in cryptocurrency markets in 2018, its market capitalization briefly reached 136 billion USD, exceeding Bitcoin in value. The project's community of 20,000 individuals, wrote its white papers, updated its blockchain, instituted a foundation, introduced a payment system, and voted to be the best crypto project in 2020 in the world by a global vote. Following a fundamental controversy in its community, Electra collapsed as the founder sold his hundreds of millions of Electras in November 2020, effectively killing the project. Within a short period, the community left the founder behind, and moved on to a new project, giving (re)birth to their community money, this time called Electra Protocol. This paper examines two speculative examinations of humanity as a unified species and agent of ecological change: Ursula K. Le Guin's Hainish Cycle and the rights of nature movement. Le Guin's Cycle imagines the slow interplanetary reintegration of human polities against a backdrop of cultural and environmental difference. I read the novels of the Cycle as an allegory for the rights of nature movement, which seeks to synthesize traditional and modern knowledge in a legal solution to ecological crisis. Both discourses, I argue, productively imagine a new historical understanding of humanity's place on Earth, but they provide a weak theory of law's capacity to initiate and institutionalize this new understanding. In place of a static theory of history and legal revolution, I propose a dynamic view of how narrative projects like the rights of nature contribute to cultural and political change. This paper comments on Richard Bourke's Hegel and World Revolutions, focusing on its analysis of Hegel's relevance for debates on revolution, freedom, and the Enlightenment. When we attempt to read visual messages in styles of dress within mass media such as film, it can help enlighten understanding of ourselves and nuanced messages we portray from a diverse range of cultures. Explained in qualitative methods, this paper explores pre- and post-World War II Japanese transnational dress through Mizoguchi 1956 film Akasen Chitai (Street Of Shame) and Imamura 1961 Buta to Gunkan (Pigs and Battleships), comparing how the clothed female body is reflective of political shifts in pre- and post-WWII Japanese culture. In order to contextualize and thus gain a clearer understanding of Japanese culture from both Japanese and Western perspectives, it is necessary to reflect on some of the history of Japan's textiles pre-WWII and the garments produced by showing visual examples of them. In film, women's bodies represent not only their own gender, but the role of men in society as well, which is true in real life. Imamura clearly looks at the human body as a context for society, applied specifically to how the female body is represented through what clothing and textiles she wears on her body, when and why; enabling the audience to decode cultural meanings as well as wider global, social and political significance. We describe the advancing knowledge of fusion cross sections from 1934 through the development of the first thermonuclear tests fielded by Los Alamos (the singular entity denoted Los Alamos Laboratory/Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory/Los Alamos National Laboratory at different times is designated "Los Alamos" in this paper) in the Pacific in 1951–1952; this technical history has not been previously documented. We compare these nuclear reaction cross sections to the current state of their knowledge as codified in the Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF) databases, focusing on the Big Five reactions: 3H ${(d,n)^4}$ (d , n) 4 He, 3He ${(d,p)^4}$ (d , p) 4 He, 2H ${(d,n)^3}$ (d , n) 3 He, 2H ${(d,p)^3}$ (d , p) 3 H, and 3H ${(t,2n)^4}$ (t , 2 n) 4 He. At Oppenheimer's July 1942 University of California, Berkeley, "galaxy of luminaries" conference, Konopinski suggested that the cross section for 3H ${(d,n)^4}$ (d , n) 4 He "DT" could be large, and although Teller described this as an "inspired guess," we provide evidence instead suggesting that Konopinski knew of a 1938 measurement by Ruhlig that secondary DT reactions were "exceedingly probable." Bethe's direction that the DT cross section should be measured at Purdue University (Purdue) in 1943 led to the remarkable and unexpected finding that the DT cross section exceeds deuteron-deuteron (DD) by a factor of 100. This was a game-changing result, making Teller's dream, i.e., the terrestrial production of fusion energy, feasible. Eyewitness accounts are transcribed from the earliest discoveries of the large magnitude of the resonant DT cross section. A description is given of the Manhattan Project's early 1942–1944 DD measurements at the University of Chicago, the 1943 DT measurements at Purdue, and the subsequent 1945–1946 DD and DT measurements at Los Alamos. The Los Alamos experiments, led by Bretscher, were the first to extend to very low incident ion center-of-mass energies in the 6- to 50-keV range needed in applications and the first to identify, characterize, and document the 3/2+ "Bretscher state" responsible for the resonance-enhanced DT cross section. The early measurements were based on thick-target experiments that required a knowledge of hydrogen-isotope stopping powers, much of which was informed by 1930s German studies. We end with the high-accuracy APSST (named for Arnold, Phillips, Sawyer, Stovall, and Tuck) measurements at Los Alamos, 1951–1952. The very first 1942–1946 measurements were accurate to about 50% or somewhat better, but by the early 1950s, the cross sections were determined much more accurately, to within a few percent of our best values today, which come from R-matrix Energy Dependent Analysis (EDA) code analyses of the data, most notably the very accurate 1980s–1990 Los Alamos DT and DD fusion data from Jarmie and Brown. We show that Fermi, in his 1945 Los Alamos lectures, anticipated the S-factor (for the DT cross section), which is a concept widely used later in nuclear astrophysics. To this long abstract, we add a final tidbit: Marshall Holloway, a coauthor on the first-ever 1943 DT cross-section measurement at Purdue, went on to lead the engineering and fabrication of the first H-bomb test, Ivy Mike. Translational research is key in advancing the diagnosis and therapy of systemic amyloidoses. This paper summarises our presentations at the ISA Workshop on Translation in Systemic Amyloidoses held in Athens on September 25-26, 2023. The critical advances made by the pioneers in the field are reviewed, with particular attention to the discoveries and developments of utmost importance to our understanding of what amyloid is and how the substance affects functions. Examples of translational research regarding the mechanisms of cardiac damage in light chain amyloidosis, the role of biomarkers in improving our understanding of the biology of the disease and patients' management, and the molecular mechanisms involved in the cytotoxicity are described. Mining is an environmentally destructive human activity. Consequently, community expectations and legislation require minimisation of impacts and rehabilitation once mining ceases. Rehabilitation standards now include restoration of structural and functional attributes of pre-disturbed landscapes. However, insufficient baseline data before, and during, mining often makes it difficult to assess impacts and develop rehabilitation objectives. Techniques that retrospectively document the pre-impact condition and environmental history of wetlands affected by mines can provide this information. We demonstrate how this can be achieved using data from palaeoecology and remote sensing, to understand mine impact on Fishermans Wetland, North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), by inferring its environmental history from formation to present. Fishermans Wetland is a small, clear, open water, wetland with extensive macrophyte growth. A lack of information about the wetland's pre-mine condition created uncertainty about the effects of upstream sand mining. Contrary to local community concerns that Fishermans Wetland was ancient and hydrologically modified by mining, it only formed in the 1950s. Moreover, changes to site hydrology predated mining. Consequently, ongoing supplementation of water is unnecessary for maintaining the wetland's ecological character. Similar techniques could be used elsewhere where mine impacts are poorly understood or contested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alan Ward (1935–2014) delivered his inaugural professorial address at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales, on 23 March 1988. Following his 1987 promotion to Professor, a position he held until his retirement in 1996, the lecture marked a milestone in his career, which to that point had included not only his influential study, A Show of Justice: Racial 'Amalgamation' in Nineteenth Century New Zealand (1974), but also important work on land reform in Papua New Guinea, the New Hebrides/Vanuatu, and New Caledonia. Some 35 years after its delivery and ten years after Ward's death, the Journal of Pacific History now publishes the lecture (as retrieved from his papers and transcribed by his daughter, Ingrid Ward) in its entirety. This paper reflects on the importance of the social to the analysis of historical multimodal texts and how some concepts and analytical tools from SFL can prevent researchers from getting the most from their data. Building on the work of Ledin and Machin (2018), it looks at three main areas of concern when dealing with historical multimodal texts—context, attention to micro, meso and macro levels, and historically-developed affordances—and uses examples of Edwardian book inscriptions to suggest ways that archival research can help overcome these problems. Overall, it argues how greater attention to the social brings to the fore how semiotic choices can be used strategically to foreground individual positions and/or subvert aesthetic norms. In doing so, it frames historical multimodal texts not as static representations of communication, but as dynamic, highly contextual and involved in a complex process of co-construction between producers, their imagined audiences and broader sociocultural meanings. It also suggests that a focus on historical context can also move multimodal studies beyond a predominant focus on the contemporary, as well as challenge the supposed novelty of certain communicative practices, thereby fostering more nuanced interpretations that recognise the broader lineage of patterned practices and uses. In this paper, I examine the method behind Nietzsche's genealogical critique. I do not offer a comprehensive characterization and defense of his execution of this critique, but I sometimes allude to elements of it in order to illustrate its method. I review versions of genealogical critique that consist in challenging the epistemic standing of moral judgments (their justification or their truth) by exposing their historical contingency. I argue that they misconstrue Nietzschean genealogy, which is best conceived as a pragmatic enterprise, which aims at uncovering their function and asking whether they are useful or harmful. I argue that such a pragmatic conception of genealogy accounts for its peculiar combination of history and fiction. I then show how this pragmatic view of moral judgments fulfills Nietzsche's ambition to develop a compelling naturalistic conception of them and explain the importance he ascribes to a functional critique of them. I conclude by considering two questions this pragmatic conception of genealogy poses for its critical bearing: How can moral judgments best explained in terms of their functional usefulness turn out to be harmful? Analytic moral philosophers have generally failed to engage in any substantial way with the cultural history of morality. This is a shame, because a genealogy of morals can help us accomplish two important tasks. First, a genealogy can form the basis of an epistemological project, one that seeks to establish the epistemic status of our beliefs or values. Second, a genealogy can provide us with functional understanding, since a history of our beliefs, values or institutions can reveal some inherent dynamic or pattern which may be problematically obscured from our view. In this paper, I try to make good on these claims by offering a sketchy genealogy of emancipatory values, or values which call for the liberation of persons from systems of dominance and oppression. It explores the journal’s historical context, examining its geographical dynamics and how it has adapted to changing socio-political and environmental landscapes over the decades. The analysis draws from an interview with a past editor of the AGR and other secondary sources, including the journal’s scope and publications from the 1960s to the present, to provide a historical review of its content and identify key thematic trends across different periods and spaces. The paper also examines how the AGR has addressed pressing socioeconomic and sustainable development issues over time. This historical overview illustrates the AGR’s role in fostering a deeper understanding of Africa’s complex geographical narratives and its ongoing contribution to global academic discussions. This paper analyses how 'criticality' is negotiated in the global policy frameworks on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and re-conceptualised in Vietnamese ESD policymaking. Taking the context of Viet Nam, this paper reflects on what constitutes criticality in education in the light of cultural and historical contexts of the education systems. The comparative perspective helps explore whether (1) universal or decontextualised 'criticality' exists or (2) whether 'criticality' is culturally negotiated based on the premise that educational imaginaries of societal formation and transformation are historically and contextually embedded and contingent. In addition, this paper connects the ongoing debate on the critical potential of ESD within the field of environmental education (EE) research to comparative education research by highlighting both what a comparative perspective might offer to EE research and what recent developments in EE research might contribute to comparative education research. This paper interrogates the informational practices shared between human and computer machine learners as they train to sense the world through lines of order, or vectors. The paper does this by exploring the affective conditions through which vectors draw relations of data over a persistent, colonial image of race. Through analysis of pedagogical practices at the Summer Institute for Computational Social Science in Chicago, and a corresponding year-long machine learning design group, this paper examines how contemporary machine learning practitioners train themselves to sense calculative relationality on the basis of racialized difference. The paper compares this vectorized sensibility with 20th century enumerative practices in the United States by analyzing the racial statistics of W.E.B. Du Bois, Kelly Miller, and Frances Kellor to trace out affective histories of the vector. Ultimately, this paper asks how machine learners – whether algorithms or their human users – often project lines of colonial order upon other forms of life, and how, by questioning the claim of vector relations and their informational objects, we can confront this sense-training and reimagine ourselves. The origin of biological rhythms goes back to the very beginning of life. They are observed in the animal and plant world at all levels of organization, from cells to ecosystems. As early as the 18th century, plant scientists were the first to explain the relationship between flowering cycles and environmental cycles, emphasizing the importance of daily light-dark cycles and the seasons. Our temporal structure is controlled by external and internal rhythmic signals. Light is the main synchronizer of the circadian system, as daily exposure to light entrains our clock over 24 hours, the endogenous period of the circadian system being close to, but not exactly, 24 hours. In 1960, a seminal scientific meeting, the Cold Spring Harbor Symposium on Biological Rhythms, brought together all the biological rhythms scientists of the time, a number of whom are considered the founders of modern chronobiology. All aspects of biological rhythms were addressed, from the properties of circadian rhythms to their practical and ecological aspects. Birth of chronobiology dates from this period, with the definition of its vocabulary and specificities in metabolism, photoperiodism, animal physiology, etc. At around the same time, and right up to the present day, research has focused on melatonin, the circadian neurohormone of the pineal gland, with data on its pattern, metabolism, control by light and clinical applications. However, light has a double face, as it has positive effects as a circadian clock entraining agent, but also deleterious effects, as it can lead to chronodisruption when exposed chronically at night, which can increase the risk of cancer and other diseases. Finally, research over the past few decades has unraveled the anatomical location of circadian clocks and their cellular and molecular mechanisms. Introduction: The knowledge of British and Irish bryophytes has been summarised at intervals since 1690 in national floras and checklists. The number of species and varieties recognised in these works can be used to track the discovery of British and Irish bryophytes. Methods: The main floras and checklists were identified, and the taxa recognised in twenty of them counted and their identity assessed in relation to the current (2021) checklist. Key results: The number of known bryophytes increased rapidly after the publication of Ray's Synopsis (1690). Dillenius's (1741) Historia muscorum brought together all previous reports. His polynomials were the main source for Linnaeus's binomial names in Species plantarum (1753). Linnaeus cut the number of British and Irish species from 179 to 119, omitting those that seemed to him obscure. It was clumsily done, and William Hudson (1762), in Flora Anglica, increased the number to 139, with 51 varieties, of which 37 are now treated as species. His contemporary Richard Pulteney made an early attempt to trace first records in a manuscript compiled ca. 1789. We agree with 134 of Pulteney's first records, but disagree with 88. All the historic lists contain redundancies – species that were then thought distinct but are now lumped together, the maximum being Smith's (1804) Flora Britannica, with 62. From 1855 to 1930 numerous varieties were recognised. These peaked at 309 moss varieties in Duncan's (1926) checklist and 117 liverworts in Wilson's (1930) checklist. The video game Valiant Hearts, released in 2014 for the First World War centenary, sold over 2.5 million copies and can be considered one of the major contemporary pop-culture historical representations of this war shaping public interpretations of this event. The paper explores how Valiant Hearts, as a kind of informal institution affecting historical remembrance, constructs and encourages a specific framing through the deployment of Europeanizing elements of anti-war narrative, Franco-German reconciliation narrative, and the de-nationalizing logic that indirectly legitimizes the European integration. The analysis of the videogame in the context of the historical film Merry Christmas (2005) is complemented with a close reading of illustrative empirical examples of Let's Plays (paratextual user-generated videos where people record themselves while playing videogames) that indicate how Europeans of different national backgrounds interact with the game Valiant Hearts. The examined cases point to how the everyday, seemingly apolitical leisure activity of playing and watching videogames dealing with history can advance Europeanizing narratives and present occasions for informal Europeanization. Despite the so-called transition in Angola from a single-party Socialist regime to a multiparty liberal democracy in the 1990s, alongside several formal organizational, legal, and institutional changes, this article argues that the Angolan security/intelligence services have been able to maintain their primary purpose since their creation in 1975 up to the present day – to support and protect the hegemony of the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) party, its elites and, above all, its President. The article outlines the evolution of the Angolan security/intelligence services in terms of their long-term continuity, exposing how changes in Angola's political system in response to domestic and international challenges were circumvented by the security services without altering their main foundational objective, or making them more accountable to democratic civilian control. Research on flexible assessment suggests that providing students with choice in assignments can increase motivation and deepen investment in learning. Although instructors are often advised to adopt flexible assessment, they are also warned about potential detriments such as perceived lack of rigour among colleagues, the stress that decision-making can bring to students, and increased workload for themselves. This paper draws upon student responses to a survey, a class discussion, and instructor observations to identify benefits and costs of flexible assessment in a fourth-year history course. Among the benefits are that students can pursue their interests more freely in both content and form, while the instructor can enjoy creative and original student work. The costs include anxiety among students who may be unsure how best to choose their assessments, and additional work for the instructor who must manage a multiplicity of assignments within the confines of an institutional grading system. The implementation of flexible assessment is recommended provided that the flexibility is compatible with the course's learning outcomes, the students' level of independence, and the instructor's capacity to take on an unpredictable amount of extra work. In 2023, the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology (AACN) faced both challenges and successes. They mourned the loss of a prominent leader in the field, Karen Postal, while also celebrating the contributions of other members. The AACN addressed controversy surrounding neuropsychology training guidelines and reaffirmed their commitment to diversity and inclusion. Despite these challenges, the AACN experienced growth in membership, financial reserves, and successful conferences. They also expanded collaborations with other organizations and increased their presence on social media. The American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology (ABCN) awarded board certification to individuals and made advancements in their examination process. The American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology Foundation (AACNF) continued to support the AACN through fundraising and grant awards. After 5 decades of the Urban Affairs Association, more than 4 decades of the Journal of Urban Affairs (JUA), and with the departure of an editorial team, this seems an opportune moment to assess the contribution made by the journal to the field of urban affairs. This paper takes both an historical and analytical approach to this evaluation, detailing the institutional challenges associated with the journal's production, coupled with identification of key themes in its catalog of papers. The historical exploration of defining articles and notable authors provides a retrospective of the key urban issues that have defined the JUA over the last 4 decades. We also undertake a content analysis of the JUA, utilizing Web of Science data, which dates back to 1993. This bibliometric analysis sheds further light on influential JUA authors, articles and topics, as well as key conceptual, intellectual, and social patterns and trends in the journal over the last four decades. Prior research in Applied Linguistics has explored how teachers mobilise diverse resources in order to make connections between the students' out-of-school knowledge and experiences and the abstract content knowledge. Nevertheless, how teachers can transcend the boundaries of disciplinary knowledge by incorporating relevant content knowledge from other academic subjects to facilitate students' learning of new content knowledge is a topic that is under-researched in the field. Adopting translanguaging as an analytical perspective, this study examines how the creation of a translanguaging space can afford opportunities for an English-Medium-Instruction (EMI) teacher to connect content-related knowledge for supporting students' learning of new historical knowledge in EMI Western History classrooms. The data is based on a larger linguistic ethnographic project in a Hong Kong EMI secondary Western History classroom. Multimodal Conversation Analysis is used to analyse the classroom interaction data. The classroom interaction data is triangulated with the video-stimulated-recall-interviews that are analysed with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. This paper argues that a translanguaging classroom space can be -created for activating students' prior learnt subject knowledge for -supporting students' learning of new academic knowledge. Such a translanguaging space provides opportunities for classroom participants to not only engage in fluid language practices, but also encourages the teacher and students to bring in multiple epistemologies that help students understand new academic knowledge in a new classroom interactional context. This contribution marks the achievements made in the past decades by a group of mainly Egyptian palynologists. The data generated covers a long-time span from the Precambrian to the Holocene of Egypt. Previously published results are devoted primarily to the study of many exploration wells and outcrop sections. Comprehensive studies were carried out on a range of palynomorph groups including spores and pollen, algae and prasinophytes, dinoflagellate cysts, acritarchs, scolecodonts, chitinozoans, and other miscellaneous forms as well as palynofacies. Particular attention is given to the history of palaeopalynology. This study has identified three main phases. The results of the first phase were limited, as the knowledge of palynology in Egypt was poorly known from 1959 until 1979. Between 1980 and 2000, which represents the second or shaping phase, an intensive study of surface and subsurface material was carried out. The third phase (2000 until now) provides the academic and commercial expansion of palynological research in Egypt, where palynology can have immediate application in petroleum exploration studies. In the first phase, the application of palynology was seriously hampered by the limited extent of the published data. Only 27 works emerged by the end of 1979. A considerable acceleration was noted in the second phase when palynological research was established in many national institutions and started to play a considerable role in petroleum exploration. Beyond academia, some of the operating oil companies started to set up palynological laboratories and staff as part of biostratigraphy teams. These included, for example, GPC, Khalda Petroleum Company with a focus on the north Western Desert, and GUPCO with a focus on the Gulf of Suez, and most of the results obtained were incorporated with the internal data on the well files. During the period 2000–2009, especially when palynofacies studies were incorporated, the progress and the direction of palynological research changed. This allowed for a more accurate reconstruction of the depositional process and eventually a palaeobiogeographical history mainly for the Cretaceous, which is an important target for hydrocarbon exploration in Egypt. From 2010 onwards, the number of publications has clearly grown and reached 23 publications in 2020. Such a high pace of development seems to have been at the expense of basic research comprising taxonomy and biostratigraphy, something that might negatively impact the quality of research and also researchers, especially early career researchers. The change brought about through this phase by integrating organic geochemistry, sedimentology, and other disciplines may, however, have left a positive impact, principally in terms of international collaborations and expansion of palynological applications beyond the standard academic cluster. Important highlights and outputs, and prospective forthcoming developments and recommendations pertaining to Egyptian palynology generally (and in each phase) are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People with a disability continue to experience barriers to service engagement such as mistrust of government services, lack of culturally appropriate support, marginalisation and disempowerment. This meta-synthesis reviews current literature regarding these experiences to explain why services are underutilised. Methods: The meta-synthesis was conducted using a meta-ethnographic approach to synthesise existing studies into new interpretive knowledge. The approach was supported by a search using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Results: Ten original research papers utilising a qualitative methodology were extracted. Synthesis of the articles revealed four concepts that were developed into a conceptual model. These include:1) History Matters; 2) Cultural Understanding of Disability Care; 3) Limitations to Current Service Provision; and 4) Delivery of Effective Services. Conclusions: Disability services do not adequately consider the cultural needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People or communicate in a culturally appropriate manner. There are expectations that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People acknowledge their disability in alignment with western definitions of disability in order to access services. More work is needed to align disability services with culturally appropriate support to provide better health outcomes. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a disability continue to experience barriers to service engagement which must be addressed. An essential gap that must be filled in providing disability services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is the acknowledgment of culture as a resolute influence on all client interactions with providers. A cultural model of disability may better align with the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people than current medical and social models used in healthcare. Prior research on classroom interaction has investigated how the teacher's feedback turn following students' responses can be used to transform students' turns into academic expressions during whole class discussions. Nevertheless, more empirical studies are needed to explore how teachers' translanguaging practices can play a role in shaping students' contributions into pedagogical opportunities for introducing academic terminologies in English-Medium-Instruction (EMI) classrooms. Adopting translanguaging as an analytical perspective, this study explores how an EMI history teacher deploys available linguistic and multimodal resources to connect students' responses with academic concepts and terminologies. The study draws its data from a larger linguistic ethnographic project that took place in an EMI secondary history classroom in Hong Kong. The classroom interaction data is examined using Multimodal Conversation Analysis, and this analysis is further triangulated with video-stimulated-recall-interviews that are analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. This paper argues that the EMI teacher's translanguaging practices facilitate the process of transforming student contributions into academic terminology and concepts. The process of deploying translanguaging for transforming student contributions highlights translanguaging as an important component of the teacher's classroom interactional competence for constructing new configurations of language practices and achieving specific pedagogical purposes. We see the stock market constantly responding to changing signals. These inputs are perceived to be highly structured in both space and time. Such regularities in the environment allow expectations about the future to be formed, facilitating current investment decisions. Perceiving the continuous stability is exploited by the brain, creating a bias in perception to generate serial dependence. Therefore, stock price dependence may be simply a result of the behavioral dependence in the decision process. The empirical evidence presented in this paper confirms that the dependence in every facet of an investment decision process has contributed to the observed stock price dependence. The largest contributor is by far from investors' memory dependence, exceeding 80%. If history is the record of past decisions going through the brain's neural pathways, the memory dependence or "memory of the memory" occurs when people follow the same old neural pathway over time. This paper revisits the question "Who Owns Religion?", in the context of a recent analysis of debates in religious studies, marked by controversy and friction between members of religious traditions and scholars writing about those traditions. Habermas's concept of a public sphere is at the center of an analysis by Laurie Patton that uses six case studies, including one involving the Sikh tradition. The paper reviews this conceptual framing and the accompanying analysis, provides a reconsideration of the Sikh case, which pertains to the construction of religious boundaries in that tradition, and draws more general lessons, including the functioning of academia as well as the contextual appropriateness of the concept of the public sphere. It argues that "eruptions" in the public sphere can be reduced by improvements in academic knowledge production, to provide a better foundation for navigating differences in modes of reasoning, or between the religious and the secular. This article uses the deliberations of the Museums Association of Pakistan to demonstrate the collaborative and multidisciplinary nature of national history-writing that took place in the wake of Pakistan's independence from British colonial rule. It repositions museums as an important stage on which new national narratives—and, by extension, new South Asian histories—were generated, rather than their being mere showcases for histories scripted elsewhere or being dismissed as colonial relics. Liu Dunzhen, Chen Congzhou, and Tong Jun are three of the most prominent scholars of historic garden preservation in China. Drawing on the historical context of gardens, these scholars present distinct approaches that reflect varying priorities for preserving cultural gems. Liu concentrates on re-establishing authentic fabric in successive phases, whereas Chen aims to reconstruct the garden's heyday fabric through cross-sectioning of significant artistic values. While Liu and Chen seek to revive original condition, Tong values the garden's existing condition. In addition to attitudes towards preserving history, these scholars' nuanced understandings of nature's enduring essence also make contributions. Liu interprets nature in gardens through intertwining painting techniques with natural landscapes. Chen explains the spiritual essence of nature as genuine feelings for an envisioned setting. By contrast, Tong delves into a mindful contemplation of 'not with distinction', fostering a human-nature connection via empathic taste deriving from Daoist context. In conclusion, these three scholars' efforts, rooted in Chinese culture, aim to benefit the poetical dwelling of human beings, from visual pleasure to sensory invocations, to philosophical allusions. Schumpeter envisioned entrepreneurship research as a way to examine and understand how capitalism changes. This notwithstanding, contemporary entrepreneurship studies predominantly explore the emergence and growth of new business firms, thus adopting a view that assumes a positive macro-level role for entrepreneurship in society even as it neglects the destructivity which was key to Schumpeter's theory. To bring capitalism back into entrepreneurship, we suggest a narrative approach to entrepreneurial history. Specifically, we introduce counternarratives to discuss new ways of thinking about the micro-macro linkage in entrepreneurship and to open up fresh understandings of creative destruction within, and beyond, capitalism. Given the many foci and functions of the education system in Ireland in both the colonial era (up to 1921) and since, teacher selection, training/education, recruitment and management have been topical and contested issues. This article traces key trends in the historical evolution of initial teacher education (ITE) policy for primary teachers in Ireland over the past two centuries, moving from a period where training involved ‘sojourning’ around schools to the contemporary era where ITE programmes are underpinned by elaborate and prescriptive standards. Framed within the wider international socio-political context, a particular emphasis is placed on the implications of policy developments in the past decade that have fundamentally altered the landscape of ITE. The paper argues that Ireland’s contemporary ITE policy is characterised by a range of tensions and debates that arise from the interface of its historical lineage with contemporary global discourses. A translation of the named article by the early Soviet Indologist A. P. Barannikov (1890–1952) is introduced. The topicality of the article in relation to current trends in scholarship is discussed, and a brief consideration of the historical context of the publication of the original article is provided. This includes reflections on the specificities of pre-Revolutionary Indology in Russia, especially as represented in the work of S. F. Ol'denburg (1863–1934) and F. I. Shcherbatskoi (aka Theodor Stcherbatsky, 1866–1942), and the development of a new form of Indology as represented by the translated article. Information is provided about the intellectual sources of the article, highlighting the development of sociological approaches to language in the early USSR, and comparisons with the ideas of Antonio Gramsci. It is suggested that Barannikov's work, with its discussion of the centrality of conflictual relations between Sanskrit and vernacular traditions, anticipates some recent works on the anti-caste movement, and it suggests a more complex relationship between colonial philology and oriental studies more generally, and the intellectual traditions of the indigenous elite. The British Government appointed a departmental committee to review anti-homosexuality laws in 1954 following a marked increase in the number of arrests for homosexuality after World War II. The committee invited the British Medical Association (BMA) and other institutions to provide scientific and medical evidence relating to homosexuality. In 1954, the BMA established the Committee on Homosexuality and Prostitution to present its view on how the law impacted upon homosexuals and society. This paper analyses the BMA's attitudes to homosexuality by examining its submission to the Departmental Committee. Whilst the BMA supported implicitly the decriminalization of certain homosexual acts, it remained strongly opposed to homosexuality from a moral perspective and insisted that it was an illness. It is concluded that the BMA's submission was driven primarily by a desire to control the "unnatural deviant" behavior of homosexuals and to protect society from that behavior rather than to protect homosexuals. This study adopts STEAM practices integrating architecture, arts, culture, and history into mathematics education in a museum learning environment. A workshop was conducted with five in-service mathematics teachers in an Egyptian museum, utilizing digital technologies such as GeoGebra, Augmented Reality, and 3D Printing to model, visualize and connect the museum collections to their teaching practices. Teachers' modelled artefacts were qualitatively analysed for their artistic, cultural and historical connections. Findings indicate that participants followed the design expected outcomes of these STEAM practices by implementing a transdisciplinary approach towards mathematically modelling the museum objects while connecting to their mathematical, cultural, historical, and artistic relations. Participants' reflections showed positive changes in their attitudes towards considering the museum learning environment for mathematics teaching during the implementation of these STEAM practices. Furthermore, such STEAM practices allowed participants to explore and connect disciplines through interacting with museum collections from artistic, cultural, historical, mathematical, and technological perspectives. South Korea is known for its highly developed economy, which has undergone significant growth and transformation over the past few decades. As a result, South Korea is now considered one of the world's most prosperous and dynamic economies, with a strong focus on innovation, technology, and exports. Research has attributed Korea's economic success to several factors: its government monetary policy, entrepreneurial business owners, a productive labor force, an education-oriented Confucian culture, and favorable international trade. This paper focuses on Korea's global emergence through a historical exploration of Confucian influence and the teachings of renowned Korean philosopher Nammyeong Jo Shik. Our article proposes that Jo Shik is the father of Korean entrepreneurship. Jinju City, where Jo Shik promulgated his most influential teachings, may be the birthplace of Korean entrepreneurship. For reasons of personal safety, artists are not always allowed to mention directly and articulately events in history and the issues that arise therefrom. One of the skills of the artist is to employ suggestiveness and allusiveness in regard to what they are contemplating. This method is used in contemporary Iranian art. Here I take a number of examples from six contemporary artists who have used different means to fly under the radar of state authorities to be expressive without being explicit. In each of these the central idea is allusion as a way of not mentioning the precise subject so as not to incriminate the artist. In time, a shared imaginary of the unmentionable becomes the characteristic 'language' of the Iranian artist. My subject is a study of visual periphrasis in Iranian art in the modern period. This first appeared long ago in literary form in classical Persian poetry and has recently re-emerged in several modernist and contemporary movements in the art of protest and polemic in periods of repression and state censorship.
