Background: Peer assisted learning (PAL) has become increasingly popular in higher education, and a range of benefits have been reported for students. However, there is scant knowledge on PAL study groups in physiotherapy undergraduate training. Objectives: This study aimed to generate in-depth knowledge about the experiences of PAL study groups from the perspective of physiotherapy students. Methods: We conducted focus group interviews with 15 first-semester students who had attended PAL study groups, and 8 third-semester students who had been PAL leaders. The interviews were analyzed using an inductive, thematic analysis. Results: Four main themes were generated: 1) An overwhelming transition – Eased by PAL study groups; 2) The significant role model – Creating safe learning environments; 3) Building a bridge between theory and practice through scaffolding; and 4) Time to mature and filtered knowledge. Conclusion: Overall, we found that PAL study groups formed an important community of practice, and that the PAL leaders became important role models, providing academic, social, and emotional support. Students learning from students in PAL study groups seemed beneficial to bridge theory and practice. Background: Peer-assisted learning (PAL) has become a well-accepted teaching method within medical education. However, descriptions of on-ward PAL programmes are rare. We introduced a PAL programme with a focus on clinical competencies on internal medicine wards. Aims: To assess the effects of an on-ward PAL programme on self-assessed clinical competencies. Method: A total of 168 medical students were randomly assigned to one of the seven intervention wards or one of the seven control wards. During their 5-week ward-placement, the intervention group (IG; n = 88) received 10 patient-centred tutorials lead by final year tutors: (I) history taking, (II) physical examination, (III) blood withdrawal, (IV) infusion, (V) patient files, (VI and VII) ECG, (VIII-X) chart rounds. The control group (CG; n = 80) did not take part in the PAL programme. Clinical competencies were self-assessed pre- and post-intervention. Results: For five of the ten assessed clinical competencies, increases in self-confidence ratings were significantly higher in the IG as compared to CG. Conclusions: Results provide preliminary evidence to suggest that PAL programmes on internal medicine wards and with final year students as peer tutors may represent a valuable additional tool within medical clerkships. Interprofessional education (IPE) is prioritized as a critical component in preparing pre-licensure health professional students for effective teamwork and collaboration in the workplace to facilitate patient-centered care. Knowledge in anatomy is fundamental for healthcare professionals, making interprofessional anatomy education an attractive intervention for IPE and anatomy learning. Since 2009, the Education Program in Anatomy at McMaster University has offered an intensive 10-week IPE Anatomy Dissection elective to seven health professional programs annually. From 2011, students were invited to complete the Readiness for Interprofessional Scale (RIPLS) and Interprofessional Education Perception Scale (IEPS) before and after the elective. A total of 264 students from 2011 to 2020 completed RIPLS and IEPS. There were significant differences before and after the elective in students' total RIPLS scores and three of the four subscales: teamwork and collaboration, positive professional identity, and roles and responsibilities. Similarly, there were statistical differences in the total IEPS scores and two of three subscales: competency and autonomy and perceived actual cooperation. Statistically significant differences in RIPLS and IEPS total scores across several disciplines were also observed. This study demonstrates the elective's impact in improving students' IPE perceptions and attitudes, likely from the extended learning and exposure opportunity with other disciplines. Peer-led assessment (PLA) has gained increasing prominence within health professions education as an effective means of engaging learners in the process of assessment writing and practice. Involving students in various stages of the assessment lifecycle, including item writing, quality assurance, and feedback, not only facilitates the creation of high-quality item banks with minimal faculty input but also promotes the development of students' assessment literacy and fosters their growth as teachers. The advantages of involving students in the generation of assessments are evident from a pedagogical standpoint, benefiting both students and faculty. However, faculty members may face uncertainty when it comes to implementing such approaches effectively. To address this concern, this paper presents twelve tips that offer guidance on important considerations for the successful implementation of peer-led assessment schemes in the context of health professions education. Phenomenon: Developing foundational clinical procedural skills is essential to becoming a competent physician. Prior work has shown that medical students and interns lack confidence and competence in these skills. Thus, understanding the student's perspective on why these skills are more difficult to acquire is vital for developing and reforming medical curricula. Approach: This study explored procedural skills learning experiences of medical students with qualitative methods. Through purposive sampling, 52 medical students from the third, fourth, and final years were selected for inclusion. Data were collected using six audio-recorded, semi-structured focus group discussions. Transcripts were manually coded and analyzed using inductive content analysis. Findings: Students provided rich and insightful perspectives regarding their experiences in learning procedural skills that fell into three broad categories: 1) barriers to procedural learning, 2) reasons for learning, and 3) suggestions for better learning outcomes. Students described a range of barriers that stemmed from both patient and clinician interactions. Students were reluctant to make demands for their own benefit during clerkships. The most commonly expressed reason for wanting to learn procedural skills was the desire to be a competent and independent intern. The motivators suggested that students felt empathetic toward interns and visualized a successful internship as a learning goal. Participants suggested peer learning, improved teaching of procedural skills, assessments, and feedback to improve their learning. Insights: This study generated valuable information to promote critical reflection on the existing curriculum and pedagogical approaches to procedural skills development. Medical educators need to sensitize the clinical teachers to student perspectives and what students are really learning to make impactful changes to teaching and learning procedural skills. Students' self-advocacy skills and self-directed learning skills need to be developed for them to seek out learning opportunities and to promote life-long learning. Lessons from this study may also apply to curriculum design in general, especially in teaching clinical skills. This guide aims to support our colleagues to have comprehensive understanding of student engagement in health professions education. Despite the universal agreement about the significance of student engagement, there is lack of uniformity in conceptualizing and operationalizing this emerging construct. We review the theoretical basis explaining student engagement from three main perspectives: behavioral, psychological, and socio-cultural. In addition, we propose a contemporary and comprehensive framework for the student engagement in higher education, which is applicable to health professions education contexts. Drawing from this framework, we explain the conceptualization of the construct and its preceding factors, mediators, dimensions, spheres, and outcomes of student engagement. The proposed framework introduces student 'engagement through partnerships' as a novel component compared with the existing models of student engagement in higher education. This way, we are proposing a mixed model that not only considers the student as a 'customer' but also as a 'partner' in education. Engagement of students through partnerships include four areas: (1) provision of the education program, (2) scholarly research, (3) governance and quality assurance, and (4) community activities. This guide will provide practical applications on how to improve student engagement in health professions education. Finally, we highlight the current gaps in areas of research in the student engagement literature and suggested plans for future directions. Practice points Student engagement is student investment of time and energy in academic and non-academic experiences that include learning, teaching, research, governance, and community activities. Students are involved in these aspects at the cognitive, affective, behavioral, agentic, and socio-cultural dimensions. Student engagement could be explained by three theoretical perspectives: behavioral, psychological, and socio-cultural. The theoretical framework for student engagement in health professions education consists of five components: (1) antecedents of engagement, which refer to institutional and student factors as well as the interactions (student-student and student-staff), (2) mediators of engagement, which include self-efficacy, motivation, belonging, and reflectivity, (3) engagement dimensions, which refer to the five dimensions of engagement: cognitive, behavioral, emotional, agentic, and socio-cultural, (4) Spheres of engagement, which refer to engagement in own learning and engagement through partnerships, and (5) outcomes of engagement, which are short-term and long-term. Engagement through partnerships includes four main areas: (1) provision of the education program, (2) scholarly research, (3) governance and quality assurance, and (4) community activities. The following measures are necessary to promote student engagement in HPE: (1) promote a culture of community and psychological safety, (2) create a culture of 'students as partners', (3) promote the use of active, collaborative learning methods with relevance to future career, and (4) promote the use of technology-enhanced learning. Occupational therapy students working with people with dementia experience communication barriers. Peer-led communication training, combined with simulation using the Curtin University Empathy Simulator (CUES), may develop students' communication skills and confidence. This study investigated peer-led, communication training on occupational therapy students' communication and perceived knowledge, confidence, and satisfaction. A mixed-methods quasi-experimental study design was used. The experimental group (n = 27) completed peer-led face-to-face training and interacted with the CUES. The control group (n = 26) completed online peer-led training. Evaluation included observation, pre-post questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. Self-rated communication skills, knowledge, and confidence improved significantly in both groups, the control group experienced greater improvements (p ≤ 0.001) compared to the experimental group. In contrast, qualitative results found peer-led communication training using a virtual avatar fostered safe, authentic and practical learning environments. A goal of interprofessional clinical learning experiences is to facilitate learning through co-construction of knowledge in support of patient care. Yet, little is known about knowledge construction processes among health professions students working together to care for patients. Understanding knowledge construction processes can guide health professions educators in the design of interventions to support knowledge construction and high-quality learning in clinical placements. In this article, we describe findings from a proof of concept study that explores the feasibility and utility of using Gunawardena's Interaction Analysis Model (IAM) to evaluate health professions students' knowledge construction processes in clinical placements. The IAM has been used to study knowledge construction processes in computer-supported collaborative learning environments, but not in interprofessional education. The IAM describes five phases of knowledge construction – sharing/comparing; exploring dissonance; co-constructing meaning; testing; coming to agreement/applying co-constructed knowledge – each representing a progressively higher-level learning process. Application of the IAM to learner dialogue proved labor-intensive but feasible and useful as a research tool to characterize learners' knowledge construction behaviors. Our findings suggest that the IAM warrants further study and may offer a framework to guide the design of clinical placements and analysis of interprofessional learning behaviors. This study aimed to explore factors, perceived by students themselves, that help or hinder development of competency in voice. Focus group interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of 14 speech pathology students (93% female, mean age 22 years). Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using template analysis. Students' perceptions of influencing factors were grouped into two major themes: (1) personal factors, and (2) educational factors. A key finding was that many participants perceived a student's own voice to be a major factor impacting their development and attainment of clinical competency in voice, and that mindsets towards the (un)changeability of students' own voices varied across participants. Students with a performance background were considered to be at an advantage in terms of performing vocal tasks and suitability to work with specific populations. Key facilitatory educational factors included access to and experience of demonstrations (face-to-face and video), additional training workshops, peer learning, and simulation. This study identified a number of personal and educational factors that students perceive to impact the development of competency in voice. In an increasingly globalized world, there have been mounting calls for social accountability with respect to recognizing Indigenous and nonwhite human rights within nation states. Thus, this perspective paper reflects on the Canadian occupational therapy journey for social change with a specific focus on Indigenous fieldwork experiences. First, we describe the importance of cultural safety in occupational therapy practice and partnership development. Then we profile a unique and successful fieldwork experience as a guide for facilitating transformative learning during an Indigenous fieldwork placement. The results of a national portrait evaluation of Indigenous fieldwork across Canada and considerations for future actions are also presented. The time is right to create further opportunities to develop creative, constructive dialogue and strategic thinking to engage in and evolve occupational therapy fieldwork education in forward-looking partnerships with Indigenous stakeholders, services and communities. Purpose: Patients who have access to information online may feel empowered and also confront their physicians with more detailed questions. Medical students are not well-prepared for dealing with so-called "e-patients." We created a teaching module to deal with this, and evaluate its effectiveness. Method: Senior medical students had to manage encounters with standardized patients (SPE) in a cross-over design. They received blended-learning teaching on e-patients and a control intervention according to their randomization group (EI/LI = early/late intervention). Each SPE was rated by two blinded video raters, the SP and the student. Results: N = 46 students could be included. After the intervention, each group (EI, LI) significantly improved their competency in dealing with e-patients as judged by expert video raters (EI: MT0 = 9.75 (2.51) versus MT1 = 16.60 (2.80); LI: MT0 = 8.70 (2.14) versus MT2 = 15.20 (2.84); both p < 0.001) and SP (EI: MT0 = 24.13 (4.83) versus MT1 = 26.52 (3.06); LI: MT0 = 23.37 (3.10) versus MT2 = 27.47 (4.38); both p < 0.001). Students' rating showed a similar non-significant trend. Conclusions: Students, SP and expert video raters determined that blended-learning teaching can improve students' competencies when dealing with e-patients. Assessment in physical education has undergone significant changes since in the 1990s. Teachers now place less emphasis on fitness test scores and dressing out, and more on skills and knowledge according to SHAPE America's National Standards for K-12 Physical Education. More teachers are looking into formative assessments, rather than a summative score. “Formative assessment” and “assessment for learning” are terms that are usually used synonymously. However, some writers distinguished between these two terms and argued that they served different purposes. Regardless, formative assessment and assessment for learning have been shown to have a positive impact on teaching and learning. This article clarifies the terms and purposes of formative assessment and assessment for learning, provides examples of various types of formative assessment and assessment for learning activities in physical education, and explains why teachers should include them as part of their physical education instruction. Background: Performance-based assessment (PBA) is an integral component of health professional education as it determines students’ readiness for independent practice. Stakeholder input can provide valuable insight regarding its challenges, facilitators, and impact on student learning, which may further its evolution. Currently, evidence of stakeholder opinion is limited. Thus, we aimed to explore physiotherapy students’ perceptions of performance-based assessment in their capacity as its central stakeholders. Methods: A qualitative interpretive constructivist approach was employed using focus group interviews for data collection. Six focus groups were completed (n = 33). Inductive thematic analysis was used to explore the data. Results: Two themes were identified. The first outlined perceived inconsistencies within the process, and how these impacted on student learning. The second described how students used their experiential knowledge to identify strategies to manage these challenges thus identifying key areas for improvement. Conclusion: Inconsistencies outlined within the current physiotherapy performance-based assessment process encourage an emphasis on grades rather than on learning. It is timely that the physiotherapy academic and clinical communities consider these findings alongside evidence from other health professions to improve assessment procedures and assure public confidence and patient safety. Student-run free clinics (SRFCs) have existed in Canada since 1971, providing interprofessional healthcare to underserved populations. SRFCs are seen as vehicles for socially accountable health professional education. Literature on how Canadian SRFC function is lacking. Web-based surveys were sent to student leaders from Canadian SRFCs regarding their 2014 activities. All six fully-functioning SRFCs responded reporting on the following: services provided, professions involved, governing structure, funding sources, clients seen, types of care sought, students and preceptors involved, as well as perceived strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. In 2014, 2,159 clients were provided clinical care at Canadian SRFCs. The most common reasons for visiting included pain and infection. Strengths identified include autonomy, ability to adapt to client needs, serving the underserved, and real-world interprofessional teamwork. Weaknesses reported include high student and preceptor turnover. Threats include securing funding and liability coverage. Since there is little literature on Canadian SRFCs, we compared our results with United States (US) based SRFCs. Canadian SRFCs share core values with US-based SRFCs and report similar strengths and challenges. However, Canadian SRFCs differ in scope and appear to provide care for more acute concerns. Data from studies of US-based SRFCs may not be immediately applicable to Canadian SRFCs. Studies evaluating Canadian SRFCs are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Introduction: The inclusion of simulated patients (SPs) in health professional education is growing internationally. However, there is limited evidence for best practice in SP methodology. This study investigated how experienced SP educators support SPs in providing SP-based education for health professional students. Methods: Experienced SP educators were identified via relevant professional associations, peer-reviewed publications, and peer referral. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted via telephone. Data were analyzed independently by three researchers using principles of inductive thematic analysis. Results: Four themes were identified that represent the key structural components of SP programs considered by educators seeking to optimize learning for health professional students in SP programs: managing SPs by operationalizing an effective program, selecting SPs by rigorously screening for suitability, preparing SPs by educating for a specific scenario, and directing SPs by leading safe and meaningful interactions. Within these components, subthemes were described, with considerable variation in approaches. Conclusions: Key structural components to SP programs were consistently described by experienced SP educators who operationalize them. A framework has been proposed to assist educators in designing high-quality SP programs that support SPs and learners. There is increased interest in longitudinal integrated clerkships (LICs) due to mounting evidence of positive outcomes for students, patients and supervising clinicians. Emphasizing continuity as the organizing principle of an LIC, this article reviews evidence and presents perspectives of LIC participants concerning continuity of care, supervision and curriculum, and continuity with peers and systems of care. Purpose: In undergraduate medical education, peer-teaching has become an established and common method to enhance student learning. Evidence suggests that peer-teaching provides learning benefits for both learners and tutors. We aimed to describe the outcomes for medical students taught by peers through systematic review and meta-analysis of existing literature. Methods: Seven databases were searched through 21 terms and their Boolean combinations. Studies reporting knowledge or skills outcomes of students taught by peers compared to those taught by faculty or qualified clinicians were included. Extracted data on students’ knowledge and skills outcomes were synthesised through a random effects model meta-analysis. Results: The search yielded 2292 studies. Five hundred and fifty-three duplicates and 1611 irrelevant articles were removed during title-screening. The abstracts of 128 papers were screened against the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Ten studies have been included in the review. Meta-analyses showed no significant difference in peer-teaching compared to faculty teaching for knowledge or skills outcomes, standardised mean differences were 0.07 (95% CI: −0.07, 0.21) and 0.11 (95% CI: −0.07, 1.29), respectively. Conclusion: Students taught by peers do not have significantly different outcomes to those taught by faculty. As the process of teaching helps to develop both tutor knowledge and teaching skills, peer-teaching should be supported. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The interprofessional education (IPE) program at Gunma University, Maebashi, Japan, uses a lecture style for first-year students and a training style for third-year students. To investigate the comprehensive implications of IPE, the change pattern of attitudes toward health care teams was examined longitudinally in pre-qualified students. The modified Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams Scale (mATHCTS) was used. The overall mean score of the mATHCTS improved significantly after the training-style IPE in their third year. Two individual items in the factor 'quality of care delivery' decreased significantly during the first year. In contrast, two individual items in the factor 'patient-centered care' increased significantly during the third year. These changes over time were confirmed by analyses using regression factor scores. There are at least two independent attitudes toward collaborative practice (CP) or IPE in response to IPE interventions: the attitude toward 'value of IPE for health care providers' may response negatively to IPE in the early stages, and the attitude toward 'value of IPE for health care receivers' positively in the later stages. These findings suggest that the continuation of mandatory IPE, which must be designed on the basis of students' high expectations for IPE and CP on entry, may result in profound changes in attitudes amongst participating students. Peer facilitation offers an innovative and effective means of promoting interprofessional learning (IPL) between health and social care students. This paper highlights the benefits that peer facilitators themselves experience from involvement in assisting junior colleagues to engage with IPL in an online context. The setting for the inquiry is an online interprofessional learning pathway shared by two higher education institutions in the UK. Insights have been developed over a 3-year period through collaborative inquiry with 41 peer facilitators, academic tutors and the students who benefitted from their input. This paper which focuses on peer facilitators' application data, interview data and written reflections explores the instrumental, cognitive and personal gains experienced. However, more fundamentally, theorizing findings in relation to identity theory we substantiate the claim that the role provides opportunity for testing and refining important aspects of both professional and interprofessional identities. Background: Increased student numbers coupled with changes in healthcare delivery mean that medical students have limited access to surgical patients, so novel methods of teaching surgery need to be considered. Aims: To design, implement and evaluate standardised clinical surgical teaching for 3rd year undergraduate medical students. Methods: A questionnaire survey (forced-choice answers plus open comments) of student and tutor (n = 7) attitudes towards the use of simulated patients and history-taking checklists in clinical surgical teaching sessions. Two cohorts of students received the same teaching, including opportunity for history-taking from a simulated patient (SP). One cohort (n = 61) received subject-specific checklists to aid history-taking; the second cohort (n = 63) received a generic checklist. Results: Forced-choice student data showed a preference for the subject-specific checklists but their open comments acknowledged the checklists' limitations. Tutors viewed the subject-specific checklists as detrimental to learning and the generic checklist as not adding value. SPs were valued by both tutors and students, but more so by students who had also received the subject-specific checklists. Students' and tutors' views differed on forced-choice evaluation forms, but were similar when open comments were taken into account. Aim: The aim of this study is to compare student teachers and clinical associate professors regarding the quality of procedural skills teaching in terms of participants' technical skills, knowledge and satisfaction with the teaching. Methods: This is an experimental, randomized, controlled study comparing the teaching of student teachers and associate professors regarding participants' learning outcome and satisfaction with the teaching. Two skills are chosen for the experiment, IV-access and bladder catheterization. Learning outcome is assessed by a pre- and post testing of the participants' knowledge and skills. Participants evaluate satisfaction with teaching on nine statements immediately after the teaching. Results: In total 59 first year medical students are included as participants in the experiment. The students taught by student teachers perform just as well as the students taught by associate professors and in one skill-catheterization-they perform even better, mean post- minus pre-test scores 65.5 (SD 12.9) vs. 35.0 (SD 23.3), One-way ANOVA, p < 0.0001, effect size 1.62. Student teachers receive significantly more positive evaluations than associate professors on several statements.
