This research explores the feasibility of using date seeds (DS), an agricultural waste, for the adsorption of malachite green (MG) dye from synthesized wastewater. The characterization of the DS before and after adsorption was accomplished by FTIR, SEM, BET, and EDX measurements. Batch adsorption experiments were investigated for MG dye adsorption from aqueous solution onto the DS. The effect of different parameters such as solution pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, temperature, and the initial dye concentration were studied. The optimum pH, adsorbent dose, temperature, and contact time for the dye removal were found to be 5, 0.1 g, 25 °C, and 30 min, respectively. The equilibrium studies for the data with Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms showed that Freundlich isotherm is the best model to describe the adsorption of MG onto the DS particles which has a heterogeneous surface. It was found that the adsorption process follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model which revealed that the intra-particle diffusion stage is the rate-controlling stage for the process. The thermodynamic parameters ΔG, ΔS, and ΔH suggest the possibility of chemisorption and physisorption simultaneously and indicate the exothermic and spontaneous characters of the adsorption of MG dye on DS with negative values of ΔH and ΔG. This study used agriculture waste (date seeds) which is proved to be an environmentally friendly and low-cost adsorbent. The date seeds were shown to be a promising adsorbent, demonstrating high surface area and well-developed porosity. The prepared adsorbent will have a great impact on wastewater treatment technology and possible applications at a large scale. The present study investigated crystal violet removal by modifying the chestnut shell with a chemical activation method. For this purpose, H2SO4 and NaOH pretreatments were applied to the chestnut shell and the pretreatment method that gave the best performance under the same conditions was determined. The best adsorption efficiency was achieved with the NaOH pretreatment (99.06%) and the crystal violet adsorption reached equilibrium within 60 min. After selecting the best chemical activation method, the modified chestnut shell was characterized before and after adsorption (FTIR and SEM). Furthermore, the effects of parameters such as pH, initial crystal violet concentration, adsorbent dosage, temperature, and contact time were observed. Moreover, isotherm, kinetics and thermodynamics of the adsorption process were researched in detail. The best results were obtained with the Langmuir isotherm model (R2=0.99) and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2=0.99). This study investigated the performance of lemongrass (Cymbopogon nardus) leaves biowaste (LLB) to adsorb methylene blue (MB) dye from an aqueous solution using the batch method. Batch experiments were conducted in order to evaluate the effect of initial MB concentration, pH, contact time, and temperature. Point of zero charge measurement demonstrated that the LLB is anionic in a wide range of pH values (pH > 6.7) that support the adsorption of cationic contaminants. The adsorption process pursued Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.9960) and pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9960) best fitted with a maximum capacity of 43.16 mg g−1 at room temperature. The adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic. FT-IR spectra and SEM-EDX characterization before and after adsorption affirmed the interaction of MB dye onto the LLB. It is suggested that the adsorption of the dye proceeds via electrostatic attraction, cationic exchange, π-π bonding, and hydrogen bonding, while the role of pore filling is modest. LLB has good reusability, as evidenced by four cycles of desorption using 30% acetic acid as the eluent. The optimum conditions were applied to real wastewater with a removal efficiency was 93.58% at pH 9. Therefore, the LLB could be an effective adsorbent for removing MB dye from wastewater. In this study, the performance of boron carbide (B4C) on the adsorptive removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions was investigated. Adsorption studies were carried out using different adsorbent dosage, dye concentration, pH, and temperature parameters. The BET analysis results showed the B4C surface area is 317.6 m2/g and B4C has a mesoporous structure. From the adsorption studies, the maximum dye removal percentage was obtained as 97.3% at 55 °C. Besides, different isotherm models were used during adsorption and the order was determined as Langmuir > Flory – Huggins > D – R > Freundlich > Harkins – Jura. For the Langmuir isotherm, qm was calculated as 188.68 mg/g at 55 °C. D-R isotherm, enthalpy, and activation energy data showed that adsorption took place physically. The kinetic studies showed that the adsorption was compatible with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor), cheap fungal biomass (TTFB), was used for the adsorption of CR from aqueous medium. Batch studies conducted to study the effect of pH (2.0–10.0), agitation speed (50–400 rpm), contact time (0–180 min), adsorbate concentration (300 and 500 mg/L), and temperature (303–333 K). TTFB characterized by FTIR, BET, SEM, and pHpzc. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of CR on TTFB were 318.1, 368.4, 394.8, and 415.7 mg/g at 303, 313, 323, and 333 K, respectively. The adsorption of CR was pH-dependent and maximum adsorption attained at pH 2.0 at all temperatures. Adsorption kinetic data evaluated by using the PFO and PSO non-linear equations. The kinetic data perfectly illustrated by the PSO model with R2 > 9935. Langmuir, Freundlich, D-R, and Temkin nonlinear isotherms applied for the experimental data, and it observed that the experimental data well fitted and found to be in good agreement with the Langmuir model (R2 > 0.9961) as compared with another three models. The values of ΔG° (–3.4159 to −6.1149 kJ/mol), ΔH° (23.2 kJ/mol), and ΔS° (0.088 kJ/mol K) revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous, feasible and endothermic (ΔG° < 0, ΔS° > 0, and ΔH° > 0). The regeneration experiments indicated that the TTFB could successfully retain CR, even after five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. The binding of CR onto the TTFB surface was through electrostatic interactions. In this study, the pine cone was activated using NaOH solution and used in the adsorption of malachite green. The effects of initial pH, temperature, initial concentration, and contact time on the adsorption process were evaluated. Functional groups of active pine cone were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR). Surface tissue images were obtained using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Isotherm studies were performed by analyzing data at the equilibrium. The compatibility of the experimental data with Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms was tested and results revealed that the data fits well to Langmuir type 2. Adsorption capacity is 111.1 mg/g and high adsorption value. Pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetic model equations were used to analyze the kinetic data of the adsorption process. The removal of Reactive Black 5 (RB5) using chemically modified banana peel powder (CMBPP) from aqueous solution was dealt with in the present investigation. Factors affecting the adsorption of RB5 (like pH solution, agitation speed, initial concentration of RB5, contact time and temperature) were investigated. FTIR, SEM-EDX, BET and Elemental analysis characterized the adsorbent material. Adsorption kinetic results evaluated by non-linear pseudo-second-order model was fitted well and showed good correlation with the experimental data than the pseudo-first-order model. The experimental equilibrium data evaluated by non-linear Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R), and Temkin equations and the experimental data were well described by the Langmuir isotherm model. Langmuir monolayer sorption capacity of RB5 onto CMBPP was observed at pH 3.0 (211.8 mg/g). The values of thermodynamic parameters revealed that the sorption process was feasible, spontaneous, endothermic, and physisorption in nature, i.e. (ΔG° <0, ΔH° > 0, and ΔS° > 0). Desorption studies reveal that the maximum recovery of RB5 when 0.1 M NaOH solution used as a desorbent. The CMBPP also exhibited excellent regeneration efficiency for the five cycles of successive adsorption–desorption. Magnetic biocomposite (MB) was fabricated by co-precipitation of palm seed-based biochar in the presence of Fe3O4particles. The MB sorption behaviour was investigated using nickel as the target pollutant. The MB characterisation revealed that its maintained micro-mesoporous character and high saturation magnetisation (65.8 Am2/kg) enable it to be separated from a solution using a magnet. The nickel removal efficiency of MB, 87% (28 mg/g), was achieved at pH 3; however, this was reduced to 45–75% (15–24 mg/g) in the presence of competing ions. Adhesion of bacteria to clay minerals is of great importance in both natural soil environments and technological applications. In the present study, equilibrium experiments along with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) were used to investigate the adhesion of Pseudomonas putida to the palygorskite and sepiolite clay minerals. The results showed that bacterial adhesion was rapid and reached equilibrium within 30 min. Equilibrium data showed that sepiolite has higher capacity and affinity than palygorskite for P. putida retention. Mixed FT-IR peak features of the clay minerals and P. putida were observed in the clay–bacteria complex spectra, indicating significant adhesion of P. putida to the minerals. However, some differences in the position of the individual bands were observed between infrared spectra obtained for pure bacteria or clay minerals and their corresponding clay–bacteria complexes, which are believed to be related to clay–bacteria interactions via different mechanisms. SEM/EDX analysis demonstrated fine fibrous clay particles adhered to the surface of individual P. putida cells. The results revealed rapid and close interactions of palygorskite and sepiolite with P. putida cells, which is important for better understanding the fate of bacteria in soil systems dominated by fibrous clay minerals and their practical applications in bioengineering and biotechnology. Water discharged by several industries contains toxins, and it needs to be treated before disposal or reuse. In the present study, feasibility of adsorptive removal of Cobalt(II) ion in waste water, usingCocos nuciferaleaf powder, is exhaustively studied and reported. Effects of contributing parameters like Cobalt(II) ion concentration, initial solution pH, adsorbent dosage, and temperature are studied and the levels of parameters optimized, following a two level−four full-factorial experimental design with 6 center points and 24 non-center points. 15 g/L ofCocos nuciferaleaf powder could reduce the Cobalt(II) ion concentration by 84.82% in 70 min at a pH of 5.0 and a temperature of 303 K. Freundlich model is marginally superior to Langmuir, Halsey, and Temkin models in representing the equilibrium, at the optimized conditions. In the present study, adsorption capacity of mercury(II) on β-zeolite, zeolite Y, and mordenite is investigated. It has been observed that removal rate of Hg(II) is better with zeolite Y than β-zeolite and mordenite, whereas, adsorption capacity of β-zeolite is found to be more than that of zeolite Y and mordenite. Five equilibrium isotherms have been tested to fit the adsorption data. The kinetic data are analyzed using the pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and diffusion models. The Freundlich isotherm model shows better fit for β-zeolite and zeolite Y, whereas, in the case of mordenite, Temkin isotherm fits the data well. The kinetic data of adsorption of Hg(II) on β-zeolite, zeolite Y, and mordenite fit well with pseudo-second order. This study provides an electrocoagulation process for the removal of metals such as cobalt, copper, and chromium from water using magnesium as anode and galvanized iron as cathode. The various parameters like pH, current density, temperature, and inter electrode distance on the removal efficiency of metals were studied. The results showed that maximum removal efficiency was achieved for cobalt, copper, and chromium with magnesium as anode and galvanized iron as cathode at a current density of 0.025 A dm−2 at pH 7.0. First- and second-order rate equations were applied to study adsorption kinetics. The adsorption process follows second-order kinetics model with good correlation. The technical feasibility of utilization of fly ash as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of metals from water has been studied. For two types of fly ashes, the retention capacities of copper, lead, and zinc metal ions have been studied. Contact time, initial concentration, and pH have been varied and their effect on retention mechanism has been studied. The dominant mechanisms responsible for retention are found to be precipitation due to the presence of calcium hydroxide, and adsorption due to the presence of silica and alumina oxide surfaces in the fly ash. First-order kinetic plots have revealed that the rate constant increases with increase in the initial concentration and pH. Langmuir adsorption isotherms have been plotted to study the maximum adsorption capacities for metal ions considered under different conditions. The adsorption of N-vinylpyrrolidone from aqueous polyvinylpyrrolidone solution using bamboo-based activated carbon was studied. The adsorption isotherms of N-vinylpyrrolidone on the carbon were determined and modeled with the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models. The Langmuir model provides the best fitting for the equilibrium data and the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was estimated to be 833.3 mg/g. The kinetics of the adsorption process of N-vinyulpyrrolidone were modeled using various equations including pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order, and intra-particle diffusion equations. The adsorption process follows the pseudo second-order kinetic model, suggesting that the adsorption mechanism is chemisorption. The activation energy for the adsorption is 86.4 kJ/mol. The characteristics and kinetics of phosphate (P) adsorption on dewatered ferric-alum water treatment residuals (Fe-Al-WTRs) have been investigated. The existence of both aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) in the residuals can result in significantly high P adsorption capacities. The P adsorption kinetics of Fe-Al-WTRs exhibited an initial rapid phase, followed by a slower phase. This could be described by three models, including a pseudo–first-order equation, a pseudo–second-order equation, and a double-constant rate equation. The latter was especially good for those runs with initial P concentrations of 500 and 1000 mg L−1. Both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms fit the experimental data well, particularly the Freundlich isotherm, which had a correlation coefficient of 0.9930. The maximum measured P adsorption capacity of Fe-Al-WTRs was 45.42 mg g−1, which is high when compared to those of most WTRs, as well as other reported adsorbents. The adsorption of a synthetic textile dye (Remazol Brilliant Black Reactive) on cocoa pod husk-based activated carbon was investigated in batch process. The adsorbent prepared was characterized by gas adsorption surface analysis (Brunauer Emmett Teller, BET), scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The effects of initial dye concentration, contact time, solution temperature, and solution pH were evaluated. Equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models, the first being the best with maximum monolayer coverage of 111 mg g-1. Kinetic data were fitted into pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich models; the pseudo second-order model provided the best correlation. Maximum adsorption was observed at pH 7. Standard free energy, standard enthalpy, and standard entropy were also calculated. The adsorption interaction was found to be endothermic and spontaneous. Batch adsorption study was carried out to remove excess fluoride from water using pyrophyllite. Result showed that adsorption of fluoride was rapid in first 20 min and thereafter increased slowly to reach the equilibrium in about 2 hrs. About 85% removal efficiency was obtained within 2 hrs at an adsorbent dose of 4 g/L for initial fluoride concentration of 10 mg/L. Maximum fluoride adsorption takes place at pH 4.9. Thermodynamic parameters such as Gibb's free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°), and entropy (ΔS°) changes were determined for the adsorption process. Negative ΔH° value signified that the adsorption process was exothermic in nature. From the kinetic study it was found that fluoride adsorption by pyrophyllite followed pseudo-second-order kinetics with an average rate constant of 0.92 g/mg · min. Intraparticle diffusion model was studied to determine the rate limiting step of the adsorption process. The adsorptive performances of alkaline treated peat have been investigated for the removal of Pb(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The influence of initial metal ions concentration and equilibrium contact time was studied in a series of batch experiments, in comparison with natural peat. An increasing of adsorption capacity of alkaline treated peat was obtained for all studied heavy metals (23.07% - Pb(II), 23.53% - Co(II), and 26.19% - Ni(II)). The Langmuir isotherm model was the best model for the mathematical description of studied heavy metals adsorption on alkaline treated peat. A significant decrease of equilibrium contact time in case of alkaline treated peat was also found. The kinetics of Pb(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) uptake by alkaline treated peat followed the pseudo-second order mechanism. The FT-IR spectrometry analysis showed that carboxylic (-COO-) and hydroxyl (-OH) groups play an important role in the heavy metals binding process. The heavy metal could by easily eluted from the loaded adsorbent with 0.1 mol/L HCl and the adsorbent may be reused in several adsorption/desorption cycles. Carica papaya, a novel sorbent, was evaluated for sorption of Hg(II) from synthetic aqueous solutions using various pseudo-second order kinetic models as well as equilibrium sorption models. Batch kinetic and equilibrium experiments were carried out for the sorption of Hg(II) onto C. papaya at pH 6.5 and solid to liquid ratio (s/l) 1.0 g L-1. The kinetic data were fitted to second order models of Sobkowsk and Czerwinski, Ritchie, Blanchard, Ho and McKay, whereas Langmuir, Freundlich, and Redlich-Peterson models were used for the equilibrium data. A comparative study on both linear and nonlinear regression showed that the Sobkowsk and Czerwinski and Ritchie's second order model were the same. Ho and McKay's pseudo-second order model fitted well to the experimental data when compared with the other second order kinetic expressions. Langmuir isotherm parameters obtained from the four Langmuir linear equations by using linear method were dissimilar, but were the same when nonlinear method was used. Additionally, various thermodynamic parameters, such as ΔG0, ΔH0, and ΔS0, were calculated. The negative values of Gibbs free energy (ΔG0) and ΔH0 confirmed the intrinsic nature of biosorption process and exothermic, respectively. In this study, the adsorption behavior of natural bentonite with respect to Fe(III) and Ni(II) has been studied in order to consider its application to purity metal finishing wastewaters. During the adsorption process, batch technique is used, and the effects of pH, bentoite amount, temperature, heavy metal concentration, bentonite treatment (calcinations of natural bentonite at 700°C, washing by deionized water to remove the excess salt from bentonite surface), and agitation time on adsorption efficiency are studied. The washed and calcined bentonite samples were labeled by WB and CB, respectively. The pH-dependence of Fe(III) and Ni(II) sorption on the bentonite is significantly more noticeable, indicating a major contribution of surface complexation at the edge sites. It was determined that adsorption of Fe(III) and Ni(II) is well fitted by the second order reaction kinetic. Furthermore, the sorption rate of Fe(III) was higher than the sorption rate of Ni(II). Adsorption of Fe(III) and Ni(II) on NB appeared to follow Langmuir isotherm. In addition, calculated and experimental adsorbed amounts of Fe(III) by the unit NB mass are very higher than Ni(II). The paper also discusses the thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption (the Gibbs free energy, entropy, and enthalpy). Our results demonstrate that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic under natural conditions. Also the adsorption capacity of bentonite for Fe(III) Ni(II) and increases with increased bentonite dose. According to the equilibrium studies, the selectivity sequence can be given as Fe(III) > Ni(II). The adsorbed amount of Fe(III) and Ni(II) on washed bentonite (WB) were very higher compared to NB and CB. Fluoride removal with varying different parameters at 303 ± 1.6 K and pH 6.5 ± 0.2 was investigated by hydrous iron(III)-chromium(III) bimetal oxide. The kinetic and equilibrium data fitted with the pseudo-second order and Langmuir isotherm equations very well (R2 = 0.99-1.00), respectively. The Langmuir capacity (θ) and free energy (EDR) of adsorption evaluated were 16.34 (±0.50) mg·g-1 and 15.81 kJ·mol-1, respectively. The estimated thermodynamic parameters viz. ΔH0, ΔG0, and ΔS0 indicated that the reaction was endothermic but spontaneous for entropy increase. The efficacy of treated Shorea dasyphylla bark for Cu(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption was assessed in a batch adsorption system as a function of pH, agitation period, and initial metal concentration. The equilibrium nature of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption was described by the Freundlich, Langmuir, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. The maximum monolayer capacities of treated Shorea dasyphylla bark, estimated from the Langmuir equation were 184.66 and 42.72 mg/g for Cu(II) and Cr(VI), respectively. The experimental results were fitted using pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models; the pseudo-second order showed the best conformity to the kinetic data. Thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy change (ΔH°), free energy change (ΔG°) and entropy change (ΔS°) were determined by applying the Van't Hoff equation. The adsorption of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) onto treated Shorea dasyphylla bark was found to be spontaneous and exothermic. The chelating ion exchange resin - Dowex M 4195 was used in palladium(II) complexes adsorption from the acidic solutions. This study discusses the sorption kinetics, and more specifically the interparticle diffusion behavior of palladium(II) onto Dowex M 4195. The adsorption studies were used to determine the amount of palladium(II) complexes uptake (resin loading), the distribution coefficients, and the recovery efficiency of Pd(II) complexes. The influence of the agitation speed, the beads size (mean radius of swollen particles), the palladium concentrations, as well as acid concentrations (ionic strength of solutions), the macrocomponent addition (sodium chloride), and the phases contact time was also discussed. Moreover, the effect of temperature was taken into account during the determination of the isotherms. The experimental data obtained at 100 µg/cm3 Pd(II) initial concentration were applied to the kinetic models, and the sorption parameters as well as the normal standard deviation were calculated. The removal of basic dye crystal violet by low-cost biosorbents was investigated in this study using a batch experimental system. The adsorption of crystal violet onto various adsorbents was solution pH-dependent and the maximum removal occurred at basic pH 10.0. The kinetic experimental data were analyzed using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order equations to examine the adsorption mechanism and the intraparticle diffusion model to identify the potential rate controlling step. These results suggested that the adsorption of crystal violet onto various adsorbents was best represented by the pseudo-second-order equation. The suitability of the Langmuir and Freundich adsorption isotherms to the equilibrium data was also investigated at various temperatures for all four sorbents and the adsorption isotherms exhibited Freundlich behavior. The Freundlich constant Kf was 1.55 for alligator weed, 2.33 for Laminaria japonica, 9.59 for rice bran and 5.38 (mg/g)/(mg/L)1/n for wheat bran, respectively at adsorbent concentration 5 g/L, pH 10.0 and 20°C. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔH, ΔG, and ΔS) were calculated and the results showed that the adsorption process for various adsorbents was spontaneous, endothermic, with an increased randomness, respectively. The particle size and the reaction temperature exhibited an insignificant impact on the adsorption equilibrium of crystal violet. Periwinkle shell, an abundant and inexpensive natural resource, was used to prepare activated carbon by physicochemical activation with potassium hydroxide (KOH) and carbon dioxide (CO2) as the activating agents at 850 °C for 2 h. The adsorption equilibrium and kinetics of methylene blue dye on such carbon were then examined at 25 °C. Adsorption isotherm of the methylene blue (MB) on the activated carbon was determined and correlated with common isotherm equations. The equilibrium data for methylene blue adsorption well fitted to the Langmuir equation, with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 500.00 mg/g. Two simplified kinetic models including pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order equation were selected to follow the adsorption processes. The adsorption of methylene blue on activated carbon derived from periwinkle shell could best be described by the pseudo-second-order equation. This paper dealt with the characteristics of Cu(II) adsorption on Chinese Quaternary loess. The Cu(II) adsorption isotherm and kinetics fit the Langmuir model and pseudo-second order kinetics well, respectively, with a predicted adsorption capacity of 109 mg g-1. The adsorption is ion exchange adsorption due to D-R model. Factors that are positively correlated with the adsorption capacity of loess include equilibrating time, pH, temperature, and solid-solution ratio. The adsorption of Cu(II) on loess involves 2-3 sequential diffusing steps into the micropores, and an endothermic and spontaneous process with predicted enthalpy, entropy, and Gibb's free energy changes of 7.64 kJ mol-1, 81.21 J mol-1K-1 and -14.94-17.37 kJ mol-1, respectively. Moreover, the applicability of loess on industrial wastewater treatment was investigated and satisfactorily proved. Biosorption studies of Cr(VI) were carried out using waste weed, Salvinia cucullata. Various adsorption parameters were studied, such as agitation speed, contact time, pH, particle size, and concentrations of adsorbent and adsorbate. The equilibrium was achieved in 12 h. A lower pH favoured adsorption of Cr(VI). The kinetics followed pseudo-second-order rate equations. The adsorption isotherm obeyed both the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The calculated activation energy (1.1 kJ mol-1) suggested that the adsorption followed a diffusion-controlled mechanism. Various thermodynamic parameters such as Δ G°, Δ H°, and Δ S° were also calculated. The positive values of enthalpy indicated the endothermic nature of the reaction, and Δ S° showed the increasing randomness at the solid liquid interface of Cr(VI) on the adsorbent, which revealed the ease of adsorption reaction. These thermo-dynamic parameters showed the spontaneity of the reaction. The maximum adsorption of uptake (232 mg g-1) compared well with reported values of similar adsorbents.
