This paper explores racial differences in maternal risk factors associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes across urban and rural geographies using 2019 data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Bivariate chi-square tests and logistic regression were performed which showed statistically significant geographical differences among Non-Hispanic (NH) Black pregnant women across income levels (p =.016) and perceived health status (p =.003). Regression analyses indicated an increased racial gap between NH White pregnant women and other racial/ethnic groups. The findings support that there are statistically significant racial differences in maternal risk factors across urban and rural geographies for NH Black and Hispanic pregnant women. The purpose of this paper is to explore 10-year trends in the use of Assistive Technology (AT). Using 2006 and 2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data, univariate analysis were performed, and the rate of change was calculated. In both 2006 and 2015 data, a higher per cent of Blacks were using AT compared to Whites and Hispanics (p <.001); however, the rate of increase indicate that Blacks had the lowest per cent change (23.9%) compared to Whites (26.8%) and Hispanics (27.3%). Results indicated that AT use is statistically more prevalent in women, individuals who are not married (e.g. divorce, widowed, separated), the veteran population, lower educational attainment levels (e.g. some high school or less), lower income levels, the ageing population, unemployed (e.g. out of work, retired, unable to work) and individuals with limited functioning because of a disability. Similarly, individuals who have healthcare coverage, and individuals with concerns with medical costs used AT more. Even though most factors yielded higher utilisation rates when comparing 2006 to 2015 data, the rate of change had varying 'speeds' of improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the experiences of US child welfare professionals during the COVID pandemic. Using an online survey, we report on a convenience sample of 444 child welfare workers. The majority reported receiving adequate guidance on staying safe; 86.3% were given access to face masks. Workers reported 75.8% of clients used masks; 10.7% reported contracting COVID through work. About 80% worried that child clients were more at-risk. Workers who felt the most supported and least at-risk were those with stay-at-home orders. Methods of uncertainty analysis are being included increasingly in regulatory chemical risk assessment. Although best practices have been established by several safety agencies in Europe and the United States, they exist only in the grey literature – there has been no comprehensive analysis of the scientific, peer-reviewed literature on these methods. We therefore conducted a systematic review of the recent peer-reviewed literature (2007–2013) on uncertainty analysis relevant to chemical risks. The main objective was to determine whether current methods are robust enough for regulatory use, because the methods used to protect public health must meet the most stringent scientific standards. Based on 297 papers, we concluded that the peer-reviewed literature is much more critical about the disadvantages of those methods, compared to the grey literature. Furthermore, uncertainty analyses can be influenced significantly by subjective expert judgment. The paper explores how paid and unpaid labor history over the life course influence women's cardiovascular disease. U.S. women comprise about 50% of the paid workforce and perform the majority of unpaid labor. However, the influence of women's work on their health is under-researched. Our sample was drawn from the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study, a cohort of post-menopausal women in the U.S. aged 50–79 at recruitment. Women were categorized into five groups according to paid labor history: worked in paid jobs consistently throughout adult life; left the workforce early; entered the workforce later; discontinuous work history; never worked outside the home. Live birth history (none, at least one, missing) served as a proxy for unpaid labor in prime age. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratio of CVD associated with different paid work histories. We then assessed the effect of unpaid labor on the relation between paid labor and CVD. Paid labor participation was not associated with CVD risk among women without unpaid labor after adjusting for age, education, and birth cohort. Among those with unpaid demands, leaving the workforce early or having discontinuous work history was protective. In this U.S. sample, the association between paid work participation history and CVD risk depends on the presence of unpaid labor. Research has been and will continue to be important to the music therapy profession, as evidenced by the number of studies examining the evolution of research in the field. Despite its seeming importance, no recent studies have investigated the extent to which music therapists find research relevant to practice and very few studies have examined this topic outside of the United States. The purposes of this study were to (a) examine the extent to which music therapists around the world view research as relevant to clinical practice and (b) among those who read research, identify which sections from scientific papers are read. This nonexperimental study involved an online survey of music therapists from 51 countries. Of the 1586 initially responding to the participant invitation, 1272 music therapists completed the survey (a completion rate of 80%). Findings suggest that music therapists find research to be relevant to clinical practice and perceptions differ as a function of educational attainment and occupational role. Results also evidenced similar educational and occupational differences with regard to reading scientific papers. These findings parallel those from earlier studies indicating those with higher educational attainment and working in academic/research-related positions tend to find research more relevant. Sexual scripts in pornography rarely include condoms. Many teenagers in the U.S. are exposed to pornography and have unprotected sex. Despite this, only a few studies have investigated whether greater pornography exposure is associated with condomless sex among U.S. teenagers, and these were conducted using clinical, convenience samples, many years ago, with data collections at a single location. This paper reports contemporary results on U.S. teenagers' exposure to pornography, parent-adolescent sexual health communication, and condom use from the National Survey of Porn Use, Relationships, and Sexual Socialization (NSPRSS), a U.S. population-based probability study. Although the correlations were in the expected direction, neither pornography exposure nor parent-adolescent sexual health communication were related at the bivariate level to teenagers' use of condoms. However, consistent with the sexual script acquisition, activation, application model (3AM) of sexual media socialization, pornography exposure interacted with parent-adolescent sexual health communication to predict condomless sex. Pornography exposure was associated with an increased probability of condomless sex only when parents engaged in little to no sexual health communication with their children. When parent-adolescent sexual health communication was high, pornography use was unrelated to teenagers' engagement in condomless sex. These results are consistent with the public health position that pornography can be a risk factor for condomless sex, the theoretical position that the socializing impact of sexual media depends on consumers' existing sexual scripts, and the pedagogical position that parent-adolescent sexual health communication can buffer youth against detrimental effects of sexual media. Objective: To understand health disparities, it is important to use an intersectional framework that examines unique experiences of oppression faced by particular groups due to their intersecting identities and social positions linked to societal structures. We focus on Black and Latina women and their experiences with 'gendered racism' – unique forms of oppression due to the intersection of race/ethnicity and gender – to foster understanding of disparities between Black and Latina versus White women in sexual and reproductive health outcomes in the U.S. Specifically, we focus on stereotype-related gendered racism (ongoing discrimination and stereotype threat based on historically-rooted stereotypes about Black and Latina women's sexuality and motherhood) and birth control-related mistrust (ongoing mistrust of the government and medical system related to birth control due to historical and current abuses). Design: We analyzed data from two survey studies with adult women in New York (Study 1: paper-and-pencil community data collection, N = 135, Mage = 43.35) and across the U.S. (Study 2: online data collection, N = 343, Mage = 29.49) who were currently pregnant or had at least one child and identified as Black, Latina, or White. Results: Black and Latina women reported greater frequency of and concern over stereotype-related gendered racism (F(3,131) = 17.90, p <.001 Study 1; F(3,339) = 22.23, p <.001 Study 2) and greater birth control-related mistrust (F(3,131) = 7.55, p <.001 Study 1; F(3,339) = 17.32, p <.001 Study 2) than White women did. In turn, stereotype-related gendered racism was positively associated with pregnancy-specific stress (ß =.40, p <.001 Study 1; ß =.33, p <.001 Study 2), and birth control-related mistrust was negatively associated with sexual relationship power (ß = −.19, p =.002 Study 2), which are factors known to contribute to birth outcomes and sexual risk, respectively. Conclusion: Findings suggest that gendered racism may play an important role in existing racial/ethnic disparities in women's sexual and reproductive health outcomes, and interventions addressing gendered racism at multiple levels are needed to promote health equity. Background: Alcohol outcome expectancies (AOEs) are associated with college students' varied alcohol consumption. Existing research on AOEs focuses primarily on heterosexual White students. Thus, it is important to explore how the intersection of multiple identities such as race, gender, and sexual orientation influence the endorsement of specific AOEs. Purpose: This paper examines AOEs among Black first-year college students, with specific attention to the influence of gender and sexual orientation. Methods: Participants were 307 Black students from four universities in the United States. We conducted bivariate analyses using the 2-factor and 4-factor B-CEOA scale. Results: Most students did not hold positive AOEs such as tension reduction and sexual enhancement. Students were more likely to endorse negative AOEs such as behavioral and cognitive impairment and social risk. Discussion: Black first-year college students reported more negative expectations associated with alcohol use, including those related to negative social risks and consequences. Thus, AOEs may serve as a protective factor against alcohol use among Black college students. Translation to Health Education Practice: Alcohol interventions should be tailored to focus on the intersection of race, gender, and sexual orientation. The Hostage Barricade Database System (HOBAS), maintained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is the only entity that compiles national statistics on crisis incidents. The HOBAS statistics are used in both research and decision making. This paper questions whether HOBAS can be reasonably expected to render the representative, unbiased data that is expected from it. In this research, qualitative analysis of the HOBAS data collection process and quantitative comparisons of HOBAS statistics to other studies, cast significant doubt on HOBAS's validity. This paper investigates the influence of goal awareness and IT self-efficacy on job satisfaction based on the motivation sequence model, goal-setting theory, and social cognitive theory. Using a large-scale field survey of healthcare enterprise resource planning (ERP) system users (n = 352), this study investigates these relationships and provides important insight to healthcare ERP system researchers and managers. Both goal awareness and IT self-efficacy influence positive job satisfaction of healthcare ERP system users, as expected. Furthermore, the influence of goal awareness is stronger when the role of ERP systems is highly perceived for decision-making of the job. There was no interaction effect between goal awareness and IT self-efficacy in thepost hocanalysis. The model is significantly supported by the empirical test with the large number of field data from healthcare ERP system users in the healthcare company. This article highlights the historical events that took place within 50 years since the American Statistical Association was founded in 1839 and the Journal of the American Statistical Association (JASA) was first published in 1888. For the first years, JASA contained almost exclusively nonmathematical papers. Many were mere repositories of extensive data sets, including many compilations from census counts with interpretations of what these data purportedly revealed. Others were from investigations undertaken by sociologists, economists, political scientists and historians. One area that attracted theoretical attention dealt with the concepts of averages, variation and distributions. The second area that received theoretical attention during these years was correlation and related concepts.

Passwords remain the most common form of authentication in the digital world. People have increasing numbers of passwords, and many people undertake risky password management behaviours such as re-using passwords, writing them down and sharing them. It is unclear whether people persist in these behaviours because they do not understand the risks involved or the benefits of the behaviour outweigh the risk. Two studies investigated the relationships between people's perceptions of the risks and benefits of a range of password management behaviours and their self-reports of their likelihood of undertaking them. The first study involved 120 MTurkers in the U.S.A., the second study involved 128 respondents from 26 different countries including approximately 50% students. In both studies, respondents took rated the risks, benefits and likelihood of undertaking 15 password management behaviours. The two very different samples provided very similar results, validating our classification of password management behaviours into four components: Storing, Sharing, Loggingn and Change behaviours. Somecomponents were more affected by perceptions of the benefits, others were equally affected by the perceptions of the risks and the benefits. Mixing languages within a sentence or a conversation is a common practice among many speakers of multiple languages. Language mixing found in multilingual speakers with aphasia has been suggested to reflect deficits associated with the brain lesion. In this paper, we examine language mixing behaviour in multilingual people with aphasia to test the hypothesis that the use of language mixing reflects a communicative strategy. We analysed connected language production elicited from 11 individuals with aphasia. Words produced were coded as mixed or not. Frequencies of mixing were tabulated for each individual in each of her or his languages in each of two elicitation tasks (Picture sequence description, Narrative production). We tested the predictions that there would be more word mixing: for participants with greater aphasia severity; while speaking in a language of lower post-stroke proficiency; during a task that requires more restricted word retrieval; for people with non-fluent aphasia, while attempting to produce function words (compared to content words); and that there would be little use of a language not known to the interlocutors. The results supported three of the five predictions. We interpret our data to suggest that multilingual speakers with aphasia mix words in connected language production primarily to bypass instances of word-retrieval difficulties, and typically avoid pragmatically inappropriate language mixing. Background: Nearly half of all college students do not engage in the recommended amount of physical activity which may contribute to chronic diseases such as obesity. Purpose: To investigate college students' use and perceptions of wearable fitness trackers (WFTs) and the impact on confidence and motivation for increasing physical activity. Reasons for non-use were also explored. Methods: 356 College students completed a 25 -item paper survey. Results: 22.5% reported using a WFT. Most wore their WFT either "every day without fail" or "most days" and half wore their WFT "all day and while sleeping". Analyses were significant for those reporting a high increase in physical activity and or a high increase in number of steps as being more likely to report a high motivation for physical activity. Discussion: Two reasons for use of WFT were weight loss and to track sleep. A common reason for non-use of WFT was cost. WFTs may help to increase motivation to engage in physical activity. Translation to Health Education Practice: When considering the use of WFTs, Health Educators would do well to identify affordable WFTs for use in interventions and be mindful of the barriers related to discontinuation of use. Objectives: Black Caribbeans in the United States have been the victims of major discrimination (e.g. unfairly fired, denied a promotion, denied housing). What is not known is the degree to which they also experience more routine forms of everyday discrimination such as receiving poor restaurant service, being perceived as dishonest, and being followed in stores. This paper investigates the distribution and correlates of everyday discrimination among a national sample of black Caribbeans in the U.S. Design: This analysis used the black Caribbean sub-sample (n = 1,621) of the National Survey of American Life. Demographic and immigration status correlates of ten items from the Everyday Discrimination Scale were investigated: being treated with less courtesy, treated with less respect, receiving poor restaurant service, being perceived as not smart, being perceived as dishonest, being perceived as not as good as others, and being feared, insulted, harassed, or followed in stores. Results: Roughly one out of ten black Caribbeans reported that, on a weekly basis, they were treated with less courtesy and other people acted as if they were better than them, were afraid of them, and as if they were not as smart. Everyday discrimination was more frequent for black Caribbeans who were male, never married, divorced/separated, earned higher incomes, and who were second or third generation immigrants. Black Caribbeans attributed the majority of the discrimination they experienced to their race. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide an in-depth investigation of everyday discrimination among the black Caribbean population. It provides the frequency, types and correlates of everyday discrimination reported by black Caribbeans in the United States. This paper provides readers with an understanding of how homeowners in the United States say they would like to live. It does so by specifically asking members of this population to express how they want their house, land, and occupants to perform in order to improve their overall home-living situation. Throughout this paper, the concept of increasing the overall performance of the home-living situation is examined by introducing a new term into the housing and community development literature–"homeflow"—a term that this study uses to measure the overall performance or success of the home, where the home in this study is limited to comprising the house, land, and occupants. The justification for this limitation is to establish a manageable basis for the initial phase of the homeflow research, which can then be expanded upon in future studies. Results of this study posit an explanation that can account for about one-quarter of what constitutes an effective overall home-living situation. These initial findings provide the foundation for further refinement and subsequent testing of homeflow in order to explain the remaining three-quarters of what constitutes an effective overall home-living situation. Primary Care clinics in the United States continue to incentivize doctors to adhere to clinical guidelines regarding record keeping and managing specific patient disorders. This paper offers a case study of a US physician working in a system of total compliance. This narrative will illustrate how a specific system has emerged that pays doctors an end-of-year bonus for achieving compliance in four specific areas: record keeping, service hours, customer satisfaction surveys, and maintaining tight control of diabetic patients. In particular, special attention is paid to the emphasis on 'the numbers' within the corporate compliance model, and specifically, the relative value units (RVUs) used for structuring billing, labeling patients, and organizing the day-to-day activities of doctors. Although incentivized models of compliance have proved effective in managing both doctors and patients, especially in the UK, 'gaming' the system can occur. This paper identifies one example of how patients assume a hidden risk within this model by potentially being labeled noncompliant by having the wrong numbers, even when receiving good clinical care and acting medically compliant. The author describes the design and implementation of one experiential learning assignment used in a principles of macroeconomics course. The learning exercise provides an active role for students and results in a relational experience that provides traditional undergraduate students with a frame of reference with which to interpret the impact of macroeconomic events and policy on their daily lives. This paper shows that ideodynamics is a differential equation model capable of predicting public opinions and behaviors from persuasive information. Statistics are also developed for the model. The methodology is applied to predict the time trend of public opinion about the economy as quantified by the Index of Consumer Sentiment compiled by the University of Michigan. The following three articles are the results of papers presented and discussed at a symposium entitled "Improving the Workforce of the Future: Opportunities in Undergraduate Education," held August 12-13, 2000, in Indianapolis, IN. This symposium was sponsored by the American Statistical Association through its Undergraduate Statistics Education Initiative. The first article was the keynote address at the symposium. The latter two articles are position papers that were developed in part through discussions among representatives from liberal arts colleges, research universities, industry, and government at a May 1999 meeting at the ASA Headquarters and a subsequent April 2000 workshop in Alexandria, VA. This workshop was partially supported by the National Science Foundation. In the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines for stability testing of new drug products, both bracketing and matrixing designs were suggested as the statistical designs. More recently, they have increasing attention from pharmaceutical companies, because both designs reduce the cost of stability studies. The purpose of this paper is to investigate both designs in terms of the power of detection of significant difference between slopes, and use the mean square error to evaluate the precision of estimated drug shelf life. Presents a first-person narrative of a geographer in the United States regarding developments in quantitative geography in the 1950s and 1960s. Arrival in the Department of Geography at the State University of Iowa in the fall of 1957; Appointment of Edwin Thomas to the department's faculty in 1958 which served as a catalyst in the accelerated and formal development of quantitative geography who brought with him his expertise in statistical analysis.

In this paper, a statistical model is developed to examine the determinants of the growing level of barter transactions in the US. Although a barter system is believed to be Pareto inferior to a money system, recent statistics of the estimated level of barter transactions in the US show a rapidly growing interest by large corporations as well as individuals in this type of trade. The primary obstacle in empirical research in this area is the difficulty of measuring the size of barter transactions. Here, data from barter exchange organizations are used to test the significance of several variables. The Ordinary Least Squares, and Cointegration and Error Correction Models are employed as two alternative empirical techniques to analyse the data. The results support the counter-cyclical arguments as well as the inflation factor. However, the notion of tax evasion as a motive in organized barter receives only a partial support. Understanding the dynamic nature of how urban neighbourhoods evolve through time has been a critical issue both in the literature and in public policy practice for decades. Methodological limitations in understanding change across the multiple attribute dimensions that define a neighbourhood, through time and for spatially situated units, have largely reduced empirical analyses to two points in time or for a singular attribute dimension. This paper demonstrates a two-layered approach to classifying neighbourhoods according to their multidimensional, temporal trajectories. The method first projects data onto a two-dimensional output space using a self-organizing map, then constructs temporal trajectories of change across this space and, finally, classifies the resulting trajectories with ak-means algorithm. The resulting typology of neighbourhood trajectories are then mapped in the geographic space to visualize the space–time, multidimensional dynamics. A case study of neighbourhood change from 1970 to 2010 in eight US cities demonstrates the effectiveness approach for grouping neighbourhoods according to the similarity of their temporal pathways of change. Ten processes are uncovered ranging from various forms of suburbanization to revitalization and a suburban densification trend in the newest, rapidly growing cities in the study. Finally, we calculated a join-count statistic to quantify the observed spatial pattern of each of these neighbourhood types in each city. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Provoked vestibulodynia (PVD) is estimated to afflict up to 8% of women in the USA. In previous research, women with PVD report embarking on a lengthy path before obtaining a diagnosis. This paper explores how year symptoms began, and how demographic characteristics and assertiveness may affect timeliness of a diagnosis. The experience of receiving a diagnosis is described. Eighty-five participants were recruited through a Listserv and Facebook support group and answered an online survey. Dependent measures included number of appointments before receiving a diagnosis and length of time (months) after symptoms began before receiving a diagnosis. An open-ended question was analyzed. Thirty-five percent attended more than 15 appointments and 37% reported more than 36 months between first symptoms and receiving a diagnosis. The length of time to a diagnosis correlated with amount of education and year symptoms began. Four themes emerged in thematic analyses: necessary self-research, medical care frustrations, empathic health care appreciation, and a negative emotional experience along their journey. Women who began experiencing symptoms after 2005 were diagnosed in less time than those experiencing symptoms earlier, indicating an improvement in diagnostic procedures. There is general agreement in Australia and beyond that quantitative skills (QS) in science, the ability to use mathematics and statistics in context, are important for science. QS in the life sciences are becoming ever more important as these sciences become more quantitative. Consequently, undergraduates studying the life sciences require better QS than at any time in the past. Ways in which mathematics and science academics are working together to build the QS of their undergraduate science students, together with the mathematics and statistics needed or desired in a science degree, are reported on in this paper. The emphasis is on the life sciences. Forty-eight academics from eleven Australian and two USA universities were interviewed about QS in science. Information is presented on: what QS academics want in their undergraduate science students; who is teaching QS; how mathematics and science departments work together to build QS in science and implications for building the QS of science students. In 2008, the University of Southern Indiana began to offer a new Doctor of Nursing Practice program via distance education. For the first three years, two librarians at the David L. Rice Library evaluated how well the library supported the study and research of students enrolled in the program. The research project incorporated multiple methods of assessment, including an examination of usage statistics generated by the electronic resources supporting the program, a student satisfaction survey, a review of the students' use of the library's interlibrary loan and article delivery services, and a citation analysis of the references appended to formal papers submitted as part of the required coursework. A significant amount of data was generated from the four methods used in the research, and the findings based on these data have impacted and will continue to impact the library's support of the program, including instruction, collection development, and expansion of services. This article discusses the behavioral genetic (BG) approach to parenting. Parenting is considered a phenotype that can be influenced by nature and nurture. Genetic contributions to parenting are conceptualized as evidence of genotype–environment correlation (rGE). Early BG studies focused on demonstrating that some parenting dimensions were heritable due to passive and evocative rGE processes. Current studies are investigating moderators and mediators of genetic and environmental contributions to parenting. The paper uses parent and child report data on parental warmth from the Twins, Adoptees, Peers, and Siblings study to illustrate the BG approach. Results show that heritability is significant for parent and child reports, but environmental influences differ by information source. Three questions are addressed concerning the BG approach to parenting: What is the nature of parenting? How does the approach inform parenting practice and interventions? This article seeks to contribute to the evolving literature on the scholarship of teaching and learning. We do this by describing and then reflecting on what we have learned from a year-long freshman applied research seminar, 'International Affairs Knowledge and U.S. Foreign Policy Opinions.' After surveying the literature on public opinion and U.S. foreign policy and materials on survey research and design, the students devised, pretested, administered (to 1300+ undergraduates), analyzed a survey and presented their findings. To do this, we had to provide them, in an abbreviated time frame, survey design, basic statistics as well as statistical software and work with them on how to summarize and present their findings. Their paper (Arbitter et al., 2010), in which some of their findings from the survey accord with the preexisting literature and much of it go beyond that, is one way of assessing our course. But, in this article, we discuss the ways such a course can meet many of the challenges held out to us as educators by such bodies as the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), especially if those following this path take advantage of the lessons we have learned. Many economics majors write a senior thesis. Although this experience can be the pinnacle of their education, publication is not the common standard for undergraduates. The authors describe four approaches that have allowed students to get their work published: (1) identify a topic, such as competitive balance in sports, and have students work on various subtopics, such as specific sports; (2) develop a large data set and have students work on different problems using it; (3) divide a quantitative problem into distinct parts and have individual students work on each part; and (4) divide a qualitative problem into distinct parts and have individual students work on their own part. The recent recession-related rise in use of U.S. public libraries temporarily masks the declining customer numbers at many public libraries. This loss has been an international problem for over a decade. George Kerr was Customer Services Manager at West Lothian Council Public Libraries (Scotland, UK) when he undertook this study. Kerr recognized that the most efficient way to increase use was to get former users to return. Drawing on international examples, direct mailings, and a telephone survey, this paper examines that effort to win back what Kerr termed “lapsed borrowers.” Kerr's research confirms that libraries can win back a significant proportion of “lapsed borrowers.” The most effective method was for the library to contact customers directly and to offer them a “freebie.” Kerr presents cost data to demonstrate that the effort to win back lapsed users is cost effective. The lapse rate was reduced to just 33 percent. According to Kerr, lapsed borrowers should be the main target group for any new marketing drive. This article uses immigration and other biographical data to refute much of the conventional wisdom about the relationship between terrorism and immigration. Using a database created from the biographical data of 373 terrorists, we have established a number of significant findings. Over forty percent of our database is made up of Western Nationals. Second, despite widespread alarms raised over terrorist infiltration from Mexico, we found no terrorist presence in Mexico and no terrorists who entered the U.S. from Mexico. Third, we found a sizeable terrorist presence in Canada and a number of Canadian-based terrorists who have entered the U.S. In addition to illuminating the terrorist networks entrenched in the West, this paper is also an attempt to advance the field of terrorism studies by taking a quantitative approach to data analysis. In this paper, a brief account of the origin and evolution of the Southern Regional Council on Statistics/American Statistical Association (SRCOS/ASA) Summer Research Conference (SRC) is outlined. The 40th SRC was held in Blacksburg, Virginia, on 6–9 June 2004. The conference was originally the brainchild of the Southern Regional Education Board's Committee on Statistics (SREB-COS), created to fulfill a unique need for a small gathering of statisticians and other scientists in the Southern region of the United States, at which research topics in statistics and statistical training could be addressed in a relaxed and unhurried way amid pleasant surroundings. Young statisticians were included along with well-known senior researchers to be able to interact, get to know each other, and enhance their research and training efforts. This paper reports on an application a multivariate analysis technique called Co-Plot. It replicates a study conducted among leading MBA programmes in the United States using the same technique; a statistical method especially suited for this type of analysis where there are samples with relatively few observations (business schools) and large numbers of variables (subject modules, core and elective). Using Co-Plot the paper presents a mapping of the structure of 32 Association of Masters of Business Administration (AMBA) accredited MBA programmes in the United Kingdom and compares the characteristics of the resultant groupings of MBA programmes and the relationship between group membership. The patterns of core and elective modules offered by the selected MBA programmes are then compared with the rankings of UK business schools. The research shows that in the UK, unlike in the US, the clustering is not as strong and clear. Five groups/clusters of schools are identified together with four main clusters of core and electives modules offered. Differentiation is only significant when the electives modules are taken into account unlike the US where differentiation is evident between programmes with the core modules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After a 22-week pilot study, Penn State launched a university-wide real-time virtual reference service in Fall 2002. The Penn State Virtual Reference Service (VRS) features chat, co-browsing, and authentication into licensed databases. VRS serves students, faculty, and staff at 21 residential and commuter campuses statewide, as well as students enrolled in World Campus distance learning courses. Making defensible risk-based decisions is a complex process that incorporates risk assessment into a risk management framework. Many site investigations require additional study, negotiations and/or actions for arsenic detected in soil samples, in many cases where no process related sources are identified and no other chemicals of concern are identified. Regulatory agencies develop guidance to standardize approaches to risk-based site investigations that focus on achieving "safe" concentrations. For arsenic, the action level is frequently in the "gray region", a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) term associated with a region of high uncertainty for risk management decisions in the "decision performance curve" associated with the data quality objective (DQO) process. Recognizing the conservative nature of the risk-based screening value for arsenic, approaches to enforce this level (or proof of comparability to natural background) may have numerous consequences including ineffective use of resources, stigmas on properties or actions at industrial or hazardous sites that are inconsistent with their regional setting. Florida has developed regulations and guidance on investigation of brownfield sites and has supported a study by the University of Florida (UF) to evaluate natural background concentrations in Florida soils. This paper proposes two non-parametric statistics that test for a treatment effect in a heterogeneous population. In the model considered, data on two examinations for both a control and a treatment group are needed to perform the test. The model allows for individual (fixed) effects that may be correlated with the choice of treatment. In addition, the model allows for an unspecified, monotonic transformation of the response variable. Stuttering is a fluency disorder that is multidimensional because it involves more than speech difficulties. People who stutter can use the Internet to find out more about their condition and connect with other people in the same position, yet in Croatia, there are not nearly as many online sources on stuttering or as many possibilities to connect with other people who stutter as in the USA or Great Britain. If one does not speak English well, a lot of information about stuttering will simply be denied to them, especially to those who have never received speech therapy. The present study, the first of its kind in Croatia, was conducted in order to understand how often and for what reasons people who stutter search for Internet resources related to their condition. The study also assessed whether Internet use depended on age, experience with speech-language therapy, self-reported satisfaction with such therapy, and self-assessed severity of stuttering. An online questionnaire integrating the 9-Point Stuttering Severity Scale was developed for this study and administered to 51 individuals aged 18 years and older in Croatia. All collected data and findings on the internet searches come from the questionnaire. Age did not significantly affect the frequency or purpose of Internet searches. Individuals who were not attending speech therapy were more likely to search online sources about stuttering than those who received it before. People who rated their stuttering as severe were more likely to search online sources for stuttering than those who rated their condition as mild. These results suggest that there is a need for more useful, high-quality online content and materials in Croatian for people who stutter. Such resources would offer people who stutter a new world of support, mutual understanding, shared experiences and knowledge, and ways for them to help themselves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) is a neurological dystonia characterised by involuntary adductor spasms of the larynx during speech. Spasm frequency is often reported to increase during syllables that begin with voiced speech sounds, especially glottal stops. Because of its underlying physical and acoustic complexities, the voicing contrast in American English (AE) appears unlikely to interact consistently with a singular physical phenomenon like laryngeal spasm. This retrospective study investigated additional phonetic contrasts and their relationship to spasm frequency. Standardised, 144-word recordings of 36 participants with adductor spasmodic dysphonia were analysed. Productions were coded for rater-perceived syllable stress, voiced/voiceless onset, vowel/consonant onset, and word-onset place and manner of production. Phonetic contexts were compared using independent sample t-tests and Kruskal-Wallis statistics. Contexts in which spasm varied significantly included stressed/unstressed syllables, content/function words, and multisyllabic/monosyllabic words. Study results reaffirm the clinical usefulness of standardised ADSD/ABSD sentences during differential diagnosis but conflict with previous studies that report a connection between ADSD spasm and phoneme voicing. With advances in the treatment of HIV, people living with HIV (PLWH) are now expected to have a near-normal life expectancy, but challenges remain in the form of substantially poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL) than the general population. Being overweight or obese may pose an additional burden in PLWH, but few studies have evaluated the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and HRQoL in PLWH. This study aimed to evaluate and describe the association between HRQoL and BMI among PLWH in the US. Data were obtained from the 2018 and 2019 US National Health and Wellness Survey, an online, self-reported, general population survey. Analyses included 575 PLWH who self-reported a physician diagnosis and prescription use for the treatment of HIV, as well as 1725 propensity score matched non-HIV controls. After adjusting for age, sex, race, and comorbidities, higher BMI was associated with poorer physical (β = −0.18, p = 0.005) and general (β = −0.42, p = 0.014) HRQoL among PLWH. Additionally, PLWH reported poorer mental, physical, and general HRQoL than non-HIV controls; these relationships were not moderated by BMI. The potential negative impact of higher BMI on patients' humanistic outcomes should be considered in HIV management, including selection of treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Children learn math concepts long before they enter school. Across all cultures, children are exposed to number and spatial language to varying degrees during everyday home routines. Yet most studies of math talk occur in the lab and target non-Hispanic, English-speaking families. We expanded inquiry to the spontaneous math language (i.e., number and spatial language) of Spanish-speaking mothers and their 1- to 2-year-olds (N = 50) during home activities. Mothers varied enormously in their use of math language, and mother math language related to toddler math language, whereas mother non-math language did not. Children's math language both preceded and followed mother math talk, suggesting imitation and reinforcement as important processes in children's math language learning. Children also produced math language outside the context of mother input. Findings advance an understanding of children's early math language in natural settings and have implications for interventions aimed at promoting math skills in toddlers from diverse backgrounds. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) conveys significant disease morbidity and lower quality of life compared to the general population. Research has shown that decreased positive health outcomes are directly correlated with inadequate development of health-related self-management skills among similar patient populations, and among these populations a healthcare transition (HCT) intervention improves provision of care and health outcomes. Thus, HCT intervention may improve care and outcomes in NF1. To design a future informed NF1 HCT intervention, baseline transition readiness must be assessed. A survey distributed by Children's Tumor Foundation (CTF) was developed to assess transition readiness and the impact of NF1 on factors of young adult life. A total of 101 participants aged 14–26 years living in the United States completed the survey with a median [IQR] age of 18 [16, 21]. The majority of participants reported that NF1 had significant or some impact on all factors of young adult life including education, career, relationships, and family planning. The median Transition Readiness Assessment Questionnaire (TRAQ) score in this study (3.50/5.00) was significantly lower than the previously published score of healthy peers (3.93/5.00) (p<.001). Higher TRAQ scores correlated with higher NF1-specific transition knowledge and skills (NF1-TRAQ) (r = 0.632). Participants self-report adequate knowledge of NF1 and comfort in talking to medical providers. They report discomfort with appointment keeping, insurance related tasks, addressing NF1 emergencies, and discussing NF1 with non-medical providers and peers. Further, TRAQ and NF1-TRAQ scores were lower in individuals who reported that their diagnosis of NF1 had some or significant impact on education, career, and relationships. Findings demonstrate that among individuals with NF1 in this study, decreased transition readiness is associated with a negative impact on young adult life. Data from this study supports the need to develop NF1-specific HCT intervention tools, with an effort to improve quality of life and standardize NF1 care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

College women are at an elevated risk for sexual victimization (SV) and secondary physical and psychological consequences. While some women experience negative outcomes such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), others experience reduced or complete absence of distress following SV. The variation in outcomes may be associated with the victim's level of intoxication, which may in turn affect their processing of and coping with the event. We examined the effects of SV severity on PTSD via coping and intoxication using a moderated mediation analysis among female college students (N = 375). Results demonstrate that coping mediates the association between SV severity and PTSD symptomology; however, intoxication did not moderate these associations. Results suggest that regardless of intoxication, SV severity influences various coping styles and plays an important role in a victim's adjustment post-victimization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, the author comments on the research paper of John J. Wiorkowski titled "Estimating Volumes of Remaining Fossil Fuel Resources: A Critical Review," published in the September 1981 issue of "Journal of the American Statistical Association." According to the author, the strength of Wiorkowski's paper is in bringing the important problem of petroleum resource estimation to the attention of statisticians. The major weaknesses are in the organization and classification of models and the gaps in coverage. The major issues in resource estimation that Wiorkowski discusses are models for estimating the total oil and gas remaining to be found and a closely related problem, estimating the amount of appreciation in known fields. The problem with the discussion of the models is the lack of a proper classification scheme. Although Wiorkowski mentions the model of researchers E. Barouch and G.M. Kaufman, he fails to note that it is one of a general class of models that are based on the discovery process and fails to emphasize that it is a play model, whereas the others he discusses are used at a higher level of aggregation.

The traditional approach to measuring the extent of discrimination by decomposing group mean differences into endowment and residual differences implicitly treats estimated coefficients as deterministic. Since these estimates are affected by sampling variability, they are, in part, stochastic. Hence, procedures are available to test the statistical significance of these differences. This paper shows that Chow-type tests can be used as direct tests of the statistical significance of the residual difference. Further, it demonstrates that the application of these formal inferential statistical tests to models of wage and salary discrimination can lead to interpretations of the results which differ from earlier interpretations. Two studies, Blinder (1973) and Hirsch and Leppel (1982), are replicated and the testing criteria suggested in this paper is used to determine results. The conclusions of these earlier studies are not supported by the statistical analysis presented in this study. There is no statistical support for discrimination in the replication of the Blinder study. In the Hirsch and Leppel replication, there is no support for the claim of differences in entry salaries, but there is support for differences in salary profiles once employed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
