A seismo-tectonic map depicting the principal structural elements of the northern Central American region has been meticulously crafted to characterize the tectonic setting and the individual seismo-tectonic structures of this area. This region is subject to heightened seismic activity, with a large number of medium-high Magnitude occurrences transpiring annually. This map is presented alongside an informative dataset wherein fault trace locations, geometry and kinematics descriptors and other available metadata have been stored. Therefore, the map offers a detailed and up-to-date depiction of the brittle deformation across the region, serving as a valuable resource for a comprehensive assessment of the seismo-tectonic framework. Moreover, the map and its accompanying database summarize fault characteristics for seismic hazard analysts and for civil protection workers, proving to be useful instruments in pinpointing areas where urgent fault research should be conducted from a seismic risk standpoint. Occlusal disturbances affect human posture and sports performance. This study aimed to monitor biomechanical adaptations to personalized occlusal splints. Splints were customized based on stabilometry, thermography, sEMG, and kinesiography, and administered to three triathlon athletes. They were evaluated during a 4-month period, using isokinetic indexes, running kinematics and anaerobic outputs. Individuality emerged as a key factor driving type, quantity, quality, and time trajectories of adaptations. The use of instrumental and clinical tests allowed the detection of static balance and biting function improvements, but not necessarily parallel to sports performance improvements. The authors argue that strength and kinematic imbalances are joint and task-specific and support the use of multi-stage monitoring of the biomechanical effect of mouthpieces. Kinematics of cycling and running may be widely assessed with ecological and inexpensive methods. This paper presents a four-fingered robotic hand, designed to carry out grasping operations along with different object manipulation tasks. The design of this hand resembles a human hand which is the perfect dexterous robotic gripper. In this paper, the forward kinematics of the designed hand is carried out using the Denavit-Hartenberg (D-H) parameters, to calculate the position and orientation of each of the fingertips. Inverse kinematics of the hand is formulated to compute the different joint angles for different fingertip configurations. Kinematic simulations are realised to estimate the workspace of the four finger robotic hand using the MATLAB interface. All possible fingertip trajectories are plotted in joint space to determine the motion constraints of the developed hand model. The results obtained confirm that the hand is suitable for grasping objects of variable geometry and materials within its workspace. Rock glaciers are typical periglacial landforms with tongue or lobate morphological shapes and characterized by the distinct front, lateral margins, and often by ridge-and-furrow surface topography textures as well as kinematic characteristics, widely distributed in alpine environments. Multitemporal Synthetic aperture radar interferometry (MT-InSAR), is a remote sensing technique with demonstrated effectiveness for detecting landform kinematics. However, its application to rock glaciers is challenged by temporal decorrelation and atmospheric phase noises due to complex topography and snow cover. We designed a quadtree segmentation and parallel computing-based MT-InSAR method to improve the quality and efficiency of deformation measurement of rock glaciers. We applied the method to a rock glacier inventory of the Nyainqêntanglha Range, China, derived from high-resolution Gaofen-2 images, to quantify the activity rate of each rock glacier. Results showed that 32.1% (6,389) of the identified rock glaciers exhibited slope-parallel deformation rates exceeding 100 mm/y. The activities of the rock glaciers exhibited strong correlations with their distance to glaciers, precipitation, freeze–thaw magnitude, and permafrost occurrence probability. In this study, we inventoried and mapped the active and transitional rock glaciers in the central part of the Southern Alps, New Zealand, using Sentinel-1 InSAR (interferometric synthetic aperture radar) data. We used forty-three interferograms acquired between 2015 and 2019 with time intervals between six days and two years along with orthoimage analyses. A total of 123 rock glaciers were identified, of which 40 are active; that is, displaying velocities higher than 10 cm/yr. The remaining landforms are considered transitional. Among the complete sample of rock glaciers inventoried, 9 may also be interpreted as debris-covered glacierets. The number of inventoried landforms is low compared to what is observed in other similar mountain ranges, such as the European Alps. We explain this by the reduced vertical extent of the periglacial belt and the generally steep topography often not favorable for rock glacier development. Additionally, the motion rates appear relatively low. We hypothesize that a mean annual air temperature at the rock glacier locations well above 0°C is the main reason for this. These conditions may have resulted in significant ground ice melt. There is the need for the development of reliable and easy to use in clinical setting gait assessment tools. An open-access video analysis software that administers the calculation of kinematical and spatio-temporal characteristics of human movement is Kinovea® however, its repeatability as a gait analysis tool has not been well addressed. The purpose of the study was to examine the applicability and reliability of an objective, quantitative, low-cost and easy to use in the clinical setting, gait evaluation method, using Kinovea® software. Data collected from 44 healthy subjects recording gait in sagittal and frontal plane using two smartphones. Time consumption of the procedure was captured. Kinovea® software was used to calculate kinematical and spatial parameters. Intra- and inter-rater reliability of the video processing as well as intra-rater reliability of the measurement procedure represented good to excellent and there were less random measurement errors. There was no measurement error due to random variation for the most of the calculated parameters, except of the pelvis position. The results suggest that excepting low accuracy in calculation of pelvis position, gait evaluation using Kinovea® software is objective, quantitative, low-cost, reliable and easy to use in the clinical setting. Breast cancer survivors may be at risk of experiencing rotator cuff disease after treatment. Biomechanical alterations following surgery potentially predispose survivors to develop this disorder. To examine scapular kinematics in breast cancer survivors with and without impingement pain during an overhead reach task. A cross-sectional study. Three surgery groups were included: non-cancer controls, mastectomy-only survivors and post-reconstruction survivors. Breast cancer survivor groups were also categorized by the presence of impingement pain. Scapular motion was tracked during an overhead reach task, performed separately by both arms. Maximum scapular internal rotation, upward rotation and tilt were calculated. Two-way analyses of variance with interactions (p <.05) were used to test the effects of group (control, mastectomy-only, reconstruction) and impingement pain (pain, no pain) on each variable within a (left/right) side. Scapular kinematics varied with the group by pain interaction. On the right side, the mastectomy-pain group had reduced upward rotation, while the reconstruction-pain group had higher upward rotation (mastectomy-only: 22.9° vs. reconstruction: 31.2°). On the left side, the mastectomy-pain group had higher internal rotation, while the reconstruction-pain group had reduced internal rotation (mastectomy-only: 45.1° vs. reconstruction: 39.3°). However, time since surgery was longer in the mastectomy-pain group than reconstruction-pain group, suggesting there may be a temporal component to kinematic compensations. There are kinematic alterations in breast cancer survivors that may promote future development of rotator cuff disease. Compensations may begin as protective and progress to more harmful alterations with time. Scapular kinematics varied with surgery and pain interaction: upward rotation was lower and internal rotation higher in mastectomy-pain group, while upward rotation was higher and internal rotation lower in reconstruction-pain group. Kinematics alterations may also be associated with time since surgery, as the mastectomy-pain group had longer time since surgery than the reconstruction-pain group. Kinematic alterations may transition from protective to harmful over time. Joint kinematics are typically described using Cardan angles or the attitude vector and its projection on the joint axes. Whichever the notation used, the uncertainties present in gait measurements affect the computed kinematics, especially for the knee joint. One notation – the attitude vector – enables the derivation of an analytical model of the propagation of uncertainty. Thus, the objective of this study was to derive this analytical model and assess the propagation of uncertainty in knee joint angle computation. Multi-session gait data acquired from one asymptomatic adult participant was used as reference data (experimental mean curve and standard deviations). Findings showed that an input uncertainty of 5° in the attitude vector and joint axes parameters matched experimental standard deviations. Taking each uncertainty independently, the cross-talk effect could result from uncertainty in the orientation of either the attitude vector (intrinsic variability) or the first joint axis (extrinsic variability). We concluded that the model successfully estimated the propagation of input uncertainties on joint angles and enabled an investigation of how that propagation occurred. Objective: This study aims to determine whether changes in dental occlusion are correlated to body posture during walking and running.Methods: Fifteen healthy subjects were assessed by a prosthodontist and deemed asymptomatic. Analyses of gait and running were performed in three conditions, in random order: a) occlusal splint; b) placebo splint; and c) no splint. The occlusal splint used in this study positioned the mandible in a stable position. Kinematic data was collected using a 3D motion capture system.Results: Changes in dental occlusion induced by occlusal splints did not influence body sway during gait or running. No significant differences were found between any of the test conditions.Conclusion: Occlusal splints have no effect on body sway during gait or running. A new geological-structural map of the southern Serre Massif (SM), in the south-central part of the Calabrian-Peloritani-Orogen (CPO), is provided. CPO is a ribbon-like microplates puzzle, originally belonging to the southern European Variscan Belt and, later involved into the Alpine geodynamics of the central Mediterranean Area. The SM represents one of the key European Variscan basement relicts, because of its exhumation mechanisms as well as for the absence of any Alpine metamorphic overprint. This map has the aim to better delineate the sequence of the Variscan blasto-deformational relationships consisting in a prograde multistage history, followed by an extensional/transpressional multistage retrograde evolution, which triggered the intrusion of the former plutonic products. The mylonitic fabric resulted finally replaced by the effects of the late- to post-kinematic plutonic intrusions coeval with a former late-Variscan exhumation stage, followed, during Mesozoic, by carbonate platform sedimentation, before to be completed exhumed during the Oligocene-Miocene Alpine stages. The aim of the present review is to track the evolution of wearable IMUs from their use in supervised laboratory- and ambulatory-based settings to their application for long-term monitoring of human movement in unsupervised naturalistic settings. Four main emerging areas of application were identified and synthesized, namely, mobile health solutions (specifically, for the assessment of frailty, risk of falls, chronic neurological diseases, and for the monitoring and promotion of active living), occupational ergonomics, rehabilitation and telerehabilitation, and cognitive assessment. Findings from recent scientific literature in each of these areas was synthesized from an applied and/or clinical perspective with the purpose of providing clinical researchers and practitioners with practical guidance on contemporary uses of inertial sensors in applied clinical settings. IMU-based wearable devices have undergone a rapid transition from use in laboratory-based clinical practice to unsupervised, applied settings. Successful use of wearable inertial sensing for assessing mobility, motor performance and movement disorders in applied settings will rely also on machine learning algorithms for managing the vast amounts of data generated by these sensors for extracting information that is both clinically relevant and interpretable by practitioners. This research presents the mathematical modelling of kinematic and complete dynamic analysis of a novel over-constrained parallel mechanism, which consists of two universal-prismatic-revolute joint limbs and one revolute-revolute-universal joint limb. The kinematic model is constructed based on the closed-loop vector method and the velocity Jacobian matrix is deduced, velocity-mapping relationships between all moving components and moving platform are also performed. Afterwards, inertia and applied forces are analysed, the complete dynamic equations with the classical Stribeck friction model of the proposed structure is established based on the principle of virtual work. A theoretical numerical example is given to solve kinematics and dynamics solutions, and theoretical forces from developed dynamic formulation are verified by the physic model simulation in Simscape and the rigid-flexible coupling model simulation in Adams. Due to limited weight and stiffness, large-scale robots are susceptible to structural oscillations during operation. In this publication, a model for the vertical dynamics of an aerial rescue ladder as an application example for large scale flexible robots is derived based on the Lagrange formalism. The model consists of five flexible segments, each using an arbitrary number of flexible modes. Kinematic loops occurring due to the type of interconnection between the telescopic elements are implicitly solved by the chosen assumed modes. Linearized system matrices are extracted from the model directly and very efficiently. In the resulting modelling process, the manipulator is solely described by its position and orientation kinematics and thus an adaption to different kinds of manipulators is straightforward. With the development of science and technology, robots have become an integral part of human life. To ease human efforts in tedious and repetitive tasks, robots are used in human platforms. The current analysis is focused on the design and development of a robotic manipulator to perform pick and place like operations. First, the kinematic analysis is performed on different links of the designed manipulator to know its workspace and singularity. Each link of the manipulator is modelled in SOLIDWORKS software and simultaneously imported to V-REP software. In the V-REP software, links are grouped to form the manipulator arm. Each link is attached to a joint. After formation of the manipulator arm, simulations for different physical operations are performed. While performing different physical operations with the manipulator arm, graphical analysis is performed for position, velocity and acceleration of revolute joints. The force required for the prismatic joint to hold the object is also calculated. The results obtained from the simulation analysis reveal that the manipulator can work satisfactorily in the practical environment. Finally, the results are compared for manipulators of different degrees of freedom to obtain the workspace required for a smooth operation. Electromagnetic (EM) tracking has been used to quantify biomechanical parameters of the lower limb and lumbar spine during ergometer rowing to improve performance and reduce injury. Optical motion capture (OMC) is potentially better suited to measure comprehensive whole-body dynamics in rowing. This study compared accuracy and precision of EM and OMC displacements by simultaneously recording kinematics during rowing trials at low, middle, and high rates on an instrumented ergometer (n=12). Trajectories calculated from OMC and EM sensors attached to the pelvis, lumbar spine, and right leg were highly correlated, but EM tracking lagged behind ergometer and OMC tracking by approximately 6%, yielding large RMS errors. When this phase-lag was corrected by least squares minimization, agreement between systems improved. Both systems demonstrated an ability to adequately track large dynamic compound movements in the sagittal plane but struggled at times to precisely track small displacements and narrow angular ranges in medial/lateral and superior/inferior directions. An OMC based tracking methodology can obtain equivalence with a previously validated EM system, for spine and lower limb metrics. Improvements in speed and consistency of data acquisition with OMC are beneficial for dynamic motion studies. Compatibility ensures continuity by maintaining the ability to compare to prior work. The location of the instantaneous helical axis (IHA) and the impact of the facet joints (FJ) on the kinematics in the thoracic spine remain inconclusive. This study aimed to examine the IHA in the functional spinal unit (FSU) T4-5 during axial rotation in intact conditions and after bilateral facetectomy. Four human T4-5 FSUs were examined with an established 6D measuring apparatus in intact conditions and after bilateral facetectomy. The IHA's parameters migration, location, and direction in the horizontal plane were calculated. Defined preloads in different positions were applied. Under the intact conditions, the IHA migrated about 4 mm and from one to the contralateral side according to the applied preload. The location of the IHA was observed in the anterior part of the spinal canal. After bilateral facetectomy, the location of the IHA shifted ventrally about 10 mm compared to the intact conditions. Under intact conditions, the direction of the IHA was minimally dorsally reclined. After bilateral facetectomy, the IHA was significantly more ventrally inclined. The study determined the location of the IHA under intact conditions at the anterior part of the spinal canal. The IHA of the FSU T4-5 is substantially influenced by the guidance of the FJs. Tensegrity mechanisms are lighter weight, lower inertial force and higher strength to weight ratio compared with conventional ones. This paper proposes a four-DOF automatic device for polishing the surface of a workspiece, in which a passive tensegrity-based parallel mechanism is connected to an industrial robot arm through an adjustable spring-loaded prismatic joint. The device consists of moving and base platforms that are connected by three compliant spring legs and one rigid central leg. A major advantage of this device is that attitude of polishing tool mounted on the moving platform can be changed automatically to fit the polished workspiece surface without any sensors, due to the three compliant spring legs. The kinematics, statics and stiffness problems of the mechanism are considered and solved. In the present study, an innovative concept of axial flapping wing model is analysed to study and improve the aerodynamic efficiency for vertical takeoff microaerial vehicle. The flapping kinematics are inspired by merging aquatic jellyfish locomotion, and umbrella's in and out mechanisms with the flappers hinged around a central hub. Also, additional flappers are placed beneath the primary flappers at varied distances. The analysis is performed using FLUENT to study the effect of placing axial flappers that maximize the lift/drag ratio. The chord length of the primary flappers is fixed at 10 cm, and axial flappers at 5 cm as the model needs to be constrained according to DARPA regulations of 15cm. The flapping kinematics are chosen as inward, outward, and symmetrical based on the feasibility of flapping in the axial direction to produce the airflow for generating lift in the vertical direction. The amplitude of the flappers is set at 30° to have a comparative study of other kinematics. The flow structures developed by the interactions of vortices of flapping wings influence the aerodynamic characteristics of the model. The velocity and vorticity magnitude of the flappers are studied and analysed in detail to understand the mechanism of axial flappers in providing better lift/drag ratio. The effect of adding additional flappers underneath the primary flapper model under inwards kinematics was better than primary flapper (Model 0) which significantly increased the aerodynamic performance of axial flapper's inter-distance variations at 5 cm by 18.3% (Model 1), at 10 cm by 15.2% (Model 2) and at 15 cm by 10.5% (Model 3). Sit-to-stand is a common activity in daily life. It is difficult for the elderly and patients with lower limb disorders to complete this motion due to limb pain, muscle weakness, partial loss of motor control function, and physical defects in joints. An STS assistive device is a piece of automated medical equipment that can facilitate rehabilitation training for patients with lower limb disorders and improve their lower limb function. In this paper, we introduce a 3-DOF series type STS assistive device. First, we selected 26 healthy adults to carry out an STS transfer experiment, and we obtained the trajectory and velocity of each joint and the law of plantar pressure during STS motion. Second, based on the above kinematics and dynamics law, a 3-DOF series mechanism was designed. Through forward and inverse kinematics analysis, the relationship between the end-effector and the linear actuator was established. The trajectory planning of the end-effector was carried out according to the natural STS transfer trajectory, and the law of the linear actuator was obtained. The trajectory planning was verified by ADAMS. Finally, the Arduino controller was used to build the control system of the STS assistive device, and the prototype experiment was carried out. People with Down syndrome (DS) have higher variability in their motor skills compared to other counterparts without intellectual disability. Given that the effect of physical training on the variability and accuracy is unclear, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of nine sessions of overhand throwing training on the variability and accuracy of overhand throwing in children with DS. Twenty-seven children with DS randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. In the pretest, two groups threw the tennis ball three times to the fixed target. Absolute error (AE) and the normalized root mean square (NoRMS) of segmental couplings of shoulder-elbow (NoRMS 1) and elbow-wrist (NoRMS 2) calculated from the scores of throwing and kinematics data, respectively. Then the experimental group participated in overhand throwing training for nine sessions. After that, the post-test was taken and ten days later, the retention test performed with pretest conditions. The results of two-way ANOVA with repeated measures on AE values showed the experimental group in the post-test and retention phases was more accurate than the control group. Also, AE values of the experimental group in the post-test and retention phases were significantly lower than the pretest. The results of two-way ANOVA with repeated measures showed that NoRMS 1 in the experimental group was significantly lower than control group in the post-test and retention phases. It is unclear whether slowness and higher reaction time of individuals with Down syndrome (DS) are because of inability to pre-program and using the generalized motor program (GMP) or not. So, the purpose of this study was to examine the consistency of relative timing as a fixed feature of a GMP in overhand throwing with changing the distance to target as a varied feature. Fifteen individuals with DS (age = 13 ± 2 y) and a control group of 12 individuals without intellectual disability (ID; age = 13 ± 2 y) were asked to throw a tennis ball to a fixed target from three distances of 2, 2.75, and 3.25 m, respectively. Instant of occurrence of the following discrete variables was recorded by motion analysis: initiation of elbow extension, maximum shoulder angular velocity, maximum elbow angular velocity, and maximum resultant hand velocity. Results of two-way analysis of variance test did not show any significant difference in any of the relative kinematic variables in distances and groups (p > 0.05). It seems that individuals with DS are able to motor preprogram and they use a GMP to overhand throwing from different distances as well as those without ID. Background: In infants with indications of upper cervical dysfunction, the Flexion-Rotation-Test and Lateral-Flexion-Test are used to indicate reduced upper cervical range-of-motion (ROM). In infants, the inter-rater reliability of these tests is unknown. Objective: To assess the inter-rater reliability of subjectively and objectively measured ROM by using the Flexion-Rotation-Test and Lateral-Flexion-Test. Methods: 36 infants (<6 months) and three manual therapists participated in this cross-sectional observational study. Pairs of two manual therapists independently assessed infants' upper cervical ROM using the Flexion-Rotation-Test and Lateral-Flexion-Test, blinded for each other's outcomes. Two inertial motion sensors objectively measured cervical ROM. Inter-rater reliability was determined between each pair of manual therapists. For subjective outcomes, Cohen's kappa (ĸ) and the proportion of agreement (Pra) were calculated. For objectively measured ROM, Bland Altman plots were conducted and Limits of Agreement and Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC) were calculated. Results: The inter-rater reliability of the Flexion-Rotation-Test and Lateral-Flexion-Test for subjective (ĸ: 0.077–0.727; Pra: 0.46–0.86) and objective outcomes (ICC: 0.019–0.496) varied between pairs of manual therapists. Conclusion: Assessed ROM largely depends on the performance of the assessment and its interpretation by manual therapists, leading to high variation in outcomes. Decentralized force and motion control of a heavy object with lathing tools, in a cooperative multiple manipulator system is studied in this paper. Interaction of the object with robot manipulators and the environment and interaction of manipulators with each other that produce internal forces in the object are complexities in the system dynamics of cooperative manipulation tasks. In this paper, impedance behaviour between manipulator end-effectors (EE) and the object is developed to achieve springy links that lead to impedance effect between the object and the environment. Then, by focusing on the interaction effects in the system as well as the role of imposed kinematics and force constraints, each manipulator will have its own controller for coordination tasks, environment force regulation and internal forces minimization, without force/torque sensors in the EE. Psychological pressure during sports competition disturbs the ideal physical movement and causes injury. Baseball batting frequently causes trunk injuries. This study aimed to examine the influence of psychological pressure on the lumbar kinematics and trunk muscle activity during the baseball batting. Fourteen collegiate baseball players participated in this study. The participants performed bat swings under three different psychological conditions (non-pressure, pressure, and emphasized pressure). The lumbar kinematics and trunk muscle activity were measured during each bat swing. One- and two-way analyses of variance were performed to compare the lumbar kinematics and trunk muscle activity among different psychological pressure conditions. The lumbar flexion angle throughout the bat swing in the swing phase, from the moment of ground contact of the lead foot to the moment of ball contact, was significantly larger under the pressure and emphasized pressure conditions than under the non-pressure condition (P<0.05). The bilateral lumbar erector spinae (LES) activities in the swing and follow-through phases were significantly higher under the emphasized pressure condition than under the non-pressure condition (P<0.05). These results indicate that the baseball batting under psychological pressure influenced the lumbar kinematics and bilateral LES activities and may be related to the development of low back pain. Geospatial information acquired with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) provides valuable decision-making support in many different domains, and technological advances coincide with a demand for ever more sophisticated data products. One consequence is a research and development focus on more accurately referenced images and derivatives, which has long been a weakness especially of low to medium cost UAV systems equipped with relatively inexpensive inertial measurement unit (IMU) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers. This research evaluates the positional accuracy of the real-time kinematics (RTK) GNSS on the DJI Matrice 600 Pro, one of the first available and widely used UAVs with potentially surveying-grade performance. Although a very high positional accuracy of the drone itself of 2 to 3 cm is claimed by DJI, the actual accuracy of the drone RTK for positioning the images and for using it for mapping purposes without additional ground control is not known. To begin with, the actual GNSS RTK position of reference center (the physical point on the antenna) on the drone is not indicated, and uncertainty regarding this also exists among the professional user community. In this study the reference center was determined through a set of experiments using the dual frequency static Leica GNSS with RTK capability. The RTK positioning data from the drone were then used for direct georeferencing, and its results were evaluated. Test flights were carried out over a 70 x 70 m area with an altitude of 40 m above the ground, with a ground sampling distance of 1.3 cm. Evaluated against ground control points, the planimetric accuracy of direct georeferencing for the photogrammetric product ranged between 30 and 60 cm. Analysis of direct georeferencing results showed a time delay of up to 0.28 seconds between the drone GNSS RTK and camera image acquisition affecting direct georeferencing results. Objectives: This study compares people with recurrent low back pain (rLBP) and people with pre-clinical low back pain (standing-induced low back pain developers; PDs) to each other and back-healthy controls (non-pain developers; NPDs). Movement variability and muscular co-activity related to coordination are important for both rLBP and PDs, and these two groups also have altered static spine extension. Methods: Eleven participants with recurrent low back pain, and twenty-one asymptomatic participants, categorized as PDs (11) and NPDs (10) through an established standing protocol, volunteered for this study. Three phases of standing extension motion (lean, hold, and return to neutral) were analyzed. Root mean square angular jerk was calculated from trunk and pelvis kinematics, co-activation of the trunk and hip musculature were assessed in four-muscle sets. Results: Root-mean-square jerk was greater when returning to neutral than when leaning back during standing extension in all three groups. People with rLBP had reduced co-activity in their trunk extensors, people classified as PD had more co-activity in their hip extensors compared with the other groups, and anterior trunk co-activity was phase-dependent, and similar between groups. Discussion: Movement control alterations with low back pain may start as an over-protective co-activation strategy in those with standing-induced LBP and progress to an under-protective strategy in those with recurrent low back pain. In this work, Multi Temporal Interferometry techniques (MTI) based on advanced synthetic aperture radar differential interferometry (A-DInSAR) have been investigated for the monitoring of deformation phenomena in slow kinematics. A-DInSAR methodologies include both Coherence-based type, as well as Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) that Permanent Scatterers (PS). These techniques are capable to provide wide-area coverage and precise, spatially dense information on ground surface deformations. MTI techniques have been applied to the town of Stigliano (MT) in Basilicata Region (Southern Italy), where the social center building has been destroyed after the reactivation of a known landslide. A direct comparison of the results has been shown that PS and SBAS techniques are comparable in terms of obtained coherent areas and displacement patterns, with slightly different velocity values for individual points. In particular, PS furnished a range of velocity between −5/−25 mm/year, while for SBAS we found values around −5/−15 mm/year. Furthermore, on the crown of the landslide body, a Robotics Total Station measuring distance values on 24 points has been installed. This study aimed to investigate both foot arch-shaped architecture and forefoot kinematics during gait. Using a dedicated three-compartment forefoot subdivision, we studied asymptomatic subjects and quantified disorders related to the metatarsal arch. Foot motion and arch shape were measured in 30 healthy subjects with a motion-capture system and force plates. Kinematic results were expressed using a novel model, which anatomically divides the forefoot into three parts. This model integrated the medial longitudinal arch angle and the metatarsal arch height and width. During the first part of stance phase, the medial longitudinal arch flattens and all foot segments move toward dorsiflexion. During terminal stance and preswing phase, medial longitudinal and metatarsal arch restoration was noted with plantarflexion of all segments, an eversion and abduction of the medial forefoot, and an inversion and adduction of the lateral forefoot. Kinematics obtained with the proposed forefoot model corroborates metatarsal arch restoration in late stance. This observation supports the fact that foot architecture is supple until midstance and subsequently creates a rigid lever arm with restored arches to support propulsion. Intracortical bone pins are introduced as gold standard for analysing skeletal motion because of eliminating soft tissue artefact. However, excluding this methodological error might be in cost of intervening movement pattern by local anaesthesia and pain of external tool within body. The purpose of this study was to examine whether intracortical bone pins alter shoulder joint kinematics or coordination. Three subjects were analysed during arm elevation/depression in frontal and sagittal planes. Retroreflective skin markers captured the motion in two sessions, before and after inserting bone pins (SKIN and PIN sessions), respectively. Thoracohumeral and scapulothoracic kinematics and scapulohumeral rhythm (SHR) were compared between two sessions. Thoracohumeral exhibited lower elevation and internal rotation in PIN session especially close to maximum arm elevation. The highest differences were observed for scapulothoracic kinematics, with higher retraction during abduction as well as higher posterior tilt, lateral rotation and retraction during flexion in PIN session. In addition, no systematic changes in SHR between subjects was found. Statistically significant lower SHR in PIN session was observed over 87-100% of thoracohumeral elevation/depression cycle in frontal plane and over 25-61% in sagittal plane. Information pertaining to the helical axis during humeral kinematics during shoulder rotation may be of benefit to better understand conditions such as shoulder instability. The aim of this study is to quantify the behavior of humeral rotations using helical axis (HA) parameters in three different conditions. A total of 19 people without shoulder symptoms participated in the experiment. Shoulder kinematics was measured with an optoelectric motion capture system. The subjects performed three different full range rotations of the shoulder. The shoulder movements were analyzed with the HA technique. Four parameters were extracted from the HA of the shoulder during three different full-range rotations: range of movement (RoM), mean angle (MA), axis dispersion (MDD), and distance of their center from the shoulder (D). No significant differences were observed in the RoM for each condition between left and right side. The MA of the axis was significantly lower on the right side compared to the left in each of the three conditions. The MDD was also lower for the right side compared to the left side in each of the three conditions.The four parameters proposed for the analysis of shoulder kinematics showed to be promising indicators of shoulder instability. Objective: To study the association between mandibular kinematics and muscular diagnoses in temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Method: Retrospective, descriptive clinical study based on an analysis of 370 clinical records of muscle diagnoses in TMD. Statistical analysis was performed with the SPSS program. Results: Five different muscle diagnoses were considered. Myospasm and centrally mediated myalgia were discarded from the statistical analysis because of their low incidences. The diagnoses included in the analysis were protective co-contraction, myofascial pain, and myalgia. Decreased mandibular kinematics in the frontal and horizontal planes were related to myofascial pain. Mandibular kinematics with deflection in opening values decreased in the frontal plane, but intermediate or increased values in the horizontal plane were related to the protective co-contraction. Muscle pain with normal or increased mandibular kinematics was associated with a diagnosis of myalgia. Research being done on a stable platform is to isolate moving carrier's motion, which can keep attached equipment stable and reduce the influence of the moving carrier. Motion compensation is analysed for a horizontal stable platform by means of coordination transformation and the parallel mechanism's direct and inverse kinematics solution. The platform has only three rotational degrees of freedom (DOFs) in three directions, which is composed of a 2-DOF spherical mechanism and a motor on it in series. When the carrier's orientation has changed, the 2-DOF spherical parallel mechanism can keep the platform horizontal by utilising the motors' drive. Firstly, the platform's kinematics are analysed and the transformation matrix of the 2-DOF parallel platform, independent of motion carrier is derived. Then by the method of coordination transformation the analytical resolution of motors' compensation is obtained, which is for keeping the parallel platform horizontal when the motion carrier's orientation changed, the result is verified by the numerical method and experimental process. Because of the influence of objective factors, the experimental results are approximately in agreement with the theoretical results, but there are numerical deviation and time lags. Finally, when the parallel mechanism is used for stable platform, some of the research work that should be solved is discussed. This paper presents a centralized force/position controller for a heavy object manipulation in a multi-manipulator cooperative system. System dynamics of cooperative manipulating tasks comes from complex interaction of the object with robot manipulators and the environment. In this paper, focussing on the interaction effects in the system as well as by noting the role of imposed kinematics and force constraints, manipulator coordination and minimizing internal forces a pre-designed impedance behaviour between manipulator end effectors and the object is developed. Introduction: To improve the total knee arthroplasty (TKA) prosthesis design, it is essential to study the kinematics of the tibiofemoral joint. Many studies have been conducted in this area; however, conflicting results and incomparable testing methods make it difficult to draw definitive conclusions or compare research from studies. The goal of this article is to introduce what is known about both healthy and prosthetic tibiofemoral joint kinematics. Areas covered: Healthy tibiofemoral joint kinematics are reviewed in vivo by different activities, and the kinematics of existing knee prosthetic design features are considered separately. These features include but are not limited to cruciate retaining, posterior cruciate substituting, mobile-bearing, and high flexion. Cenozoic convergence, collision and subsequent subduction between African and Eurasian plates are accommodating in overriding Eurasian plate both forming the Aegean extension and the North & East Anatolian fault zones. To understand the kinematic evolution of upper crust, here we provide new paleostress data from the Havran-Balıkesir Fault Zone located at the interaction area between the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) and west Anatolian extensional structures. Paleostress reconstructions of fault-slip data reveal that three distinct deformation phases have been experienced in the region. Phase 1 is represented by left-lateral strike-slip faulting with reverse component in the pre-Pliocene period. The Phase 2 is characterized by approximately N-S trending contraction and associated E-W trending extension in Plio-Quaternary, which is spatiotemporally linked to the initiation of NAFZ through the area. The youngest deformation, Phase 3 is attributed to NE-SW trending extension and NW-SE-trending contraction commenced by the Quaternary transpressional tectonics in Southern Marmara Region. These results show that the main contraction axes have been experienced a spectacular anticlockwise rotation (from NW-SE to E-W), which is associated with; (i)the propagation geometry of the NAFZ into the region (ii)slab roll-back and retreat and tearing process on the Aegean subduction system, and (iii)the existence of inherited structures of the İzmir-Balıkesir Transfer Zone. In the present work, a new class of finite elements (FEs) for the analysis of composite and sandwich plates embedding piezoelectric skins and patches is proposed. By making use of node-by-node variable plate theory assumptions, the new finite element allows for the simultaneous analysis of different subregions of the problem domain with different kinematics and accuracy, in a global/local sense. As a consequence, the computational costs can be reduced drastically by assuming refined theories only in those zones/nodes of the structural domain where the resulting strain and stress states, and their electro-mechanical coupling present a complex distribution. The primary advantage is that no ad-hoc techniques and mathematical artifices are required to mix the fields coming from two different and kinematically incompatible adjacent elements, because the plate structural theory varies within the finite element itself. In other words, the structural theory of the plate element is a property of the FE node in this present approach, and the continuity between two adjacent elements is ensured by adopting the same kinematics at the interface nodes. The finite element arrays of the generic plate element are formulated in terms of fundamental nuclei, which are invariants of the theory approximation order and the modeling technique (Equivalent-Single-Layer, Layer-Wise). In this work, the attention is focused on the use of Legendre polynomial expansions to describe the through-the-thickness unknowns to develop advanced plate theories. Ankle bracing is commonly used to prevent ankle sprain occurrences. The present study investigated the effects of a semi-rigid ankle brace on the ankle joint complex during landing on inclined surfaces. Seventeen recreational athletes performed a single leg landing task onto three different surface alignments (everted, neutral, inverted), with and without the brace. Ground reaction forces (GRF), kinematics, and brace pressure were recorded. Six two-way repeated measures MANOVA tested for differences in GRF, talocrural and subtalar kinematics and kinetics. Participants landed with a significantly less plantar flexed (P < 0.001) and more everted (P = 0.001) foot during the braced condition. Although no differences were observed for the joint moments, an increased subtalar compression force (P = 0.009) was observed with the brace. Landing on the inverted surface resulted in significantly higher peak magnitudes of the vertical and the mediolateral GRF and the talocrural inversion moment compared to landing on the neutral surface. Ankle bracing altered ankle kinematics by restricting the ROM of the ankle joint complex. This study confirmed that landing on inverted surfaces may increase the risk for lateral ankle ligaments injuries. We propose a novel method for estimating population-level and subject-specific effects of covariates on the variability of functional data. We extend the functional principal components analysis framework by modeling the variance of principal component scores as a function of covariates and subject-specific random effects. In a setting where principal components are largely invariant across subjects and covariate values, modeling the variance of these scores provides a flexible and interpretable way to explore factors that affect the variability of functional data. Our work is motivated by a novel dataset from an experiment assessing upper extremity motor control, and quantifies the reduction in movement variability associated with skill learning. The proposed methods can be applied broadly to understand movement variability, in settings that include motor learning, impairment due to injury or disease, and recovery. Objective: The aim of the study was to analyze the characteristics and changes in mandibular condylar motion in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion.Methods: Using a 3D motion analyzer, mandibular movements were recorded in 9 patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion and 22 control subjects with Angle Class I jaw relationships.Results: Class III patients had a similar interincisor point displacement but a significantly reduced displacement of both condyles on the sagittal and frontal planes, with smaller translation paths than control subjects (right -9.4 mm; left -4.8 mm). The overall condylar rotation component was larger in Class III patients (right +8.8%; left +7.3%). The largest inter-group significant differences were observed in the first 10% of mouth opening, in which Class III patients had a larger rotating component than control subjects (+20%, p < 0.01).Conclusions: Condylar motion was reduced in skeletal Class III patients, in particular in the translational path. This paper suggests the dimensional synthesis of a planar five-bar mechanism of variable topology using dyadic and triadic techniques. The mechanism consists of two binary links with two offset tracing points and transmits motion between two extreme positions. Synthesis of mechanism for standard kinematic task is considered. The analytical displacement equations have been written using complex numbers. The effectiveness of mechanism synthesis has been demonstrated on a numerical example. The soft actuator represents a valuable addition to the robotics research area in last two decades. These actuators provide significant features such as lightweight, softness, high force to weight ratio and the ability to form in different shapes. This article presents a new length model to the single extensor pneumatic muscle actuator (PMA) which is depended on the constructed parameters and the air pressure. On the other hand, the tensile force formula of the contractor actuator has been modified to describe the extension force of the extensor PMA. The parallel structure of four extensor actuators is designed and implemented as continuum arm. The bending behaviour of the proposed arm is illustrated and modelled mathematically. The length model of the single extensor actuator has validated by the comparison between the model and the experiment data and then a neural network (NN) control system is applied to control the elongation of the extensor PMA. Several numerical approaches have been developed to address the soft tissue artefact, such as the segmental optimization and multibody kinematics optimizations using either open-loop or closed-loop chains. However, it is still not clear which method is the most efficient for scapular kinematics reconstruction. In this study, six kinematic models were compared to a silver standard, i.e. a scapula palpator, during a series of 55 postures with maximal amplitudes of both the arm and scapula performed by 15 subjects. The most accurate approaches were the multibody optimization with a closed-loop chain and the segmental optimization. They provided averaged scapula misorientations of 14.9 ± 6.7° and 16 ± 7.1, respectively. Regarding the closed-loop chain integrating a point-to-ellipsoid scapulothoracic joint, the ellipsoid providing the most accurate results was a thorax-size ellipsoid fitting the area browsed by the scapula. Eventually, considering the high implementation costs of a multibody kinematics optimization, the segmental optimization could be considered as appropriate for scapular kinematics reconstruction. Purpose: This work generates a comprehensive description of upper extremity and torso kinematics of a healthy population during reaching and dexterity Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) tasks. Methods: Upper limb and torso kinematic data were collected from 30 young, healthy participants as they performed three common FCE tasks: repetitive reaching, fingertip dexterity, and hand and forearm dexterity. Kinematic profiles were created for all clinically relevant angles of the torso, shoulder, elbow, and wrist. Results: These provocative tasks require large ranges of motion and create high demand postures for the upper limb, specifically at the shoulder. Arm elevation was up to 90°, while humeral internal rotation of 25° was observed. Torso angles were typically below 30° from neutral and elbow flexion remained within 90°–120° for nearly all tasks. Wrist ulnar deviation ranged from 0° to 26° for both wrists. Conclusion: The normative data created in this investigation provide a description of healthy motion during reaching and dexterity tasks. These normative curves are the initial step towards understanding movement that would contraindicate return to work during an FCE. Identification of errors or anomalous values, collectively considered outliers, assists in exploring data or through removing outliers improves statistical analysis. In biomechanics, outlier detection methods have explored the ‘shape’ of the entire cycles, although exploring fewer points using a ‘moving-window’ may be advantageous. Hence, the aim was to develop a moving-window method for detecting trials with outliers in intra-participant time-series data. Outliers were detected through two stages for the strides (mean 38 cycles) from treadmill running. Cycles were removed in stage 1 for one-dimensional (spatial) outliers at each time point using the median absolute deviation, and in stage 2 for two-dimensional (spatial–temporal) outliers using a moving window standard deviation. Significance levels of the t-statistic were used for scaling. Fewer cycles were removed with smaller scaling and smaller window size, requiring more stringent scaling at stage 1 (mean 3.5 cycles removed for 0.0001 scaling) than at stage 2 (mean 2.6 cycles removed for 0.01 scaling with a window size of 1). Settings in the supplied Matlab code should be customised to each data set, and outliers assessed to justify whether to retain or remove those cycles. Objectives: The aim of the study was to detect the changes in 3D mandibular motion after orthognathic surgery for skeletal Class III malocclusion.Method: Using a 3D motion analyzer, free mandibular border movements were recorded in nine patients successfully treated for skeletal Class III malocclusion and in nine patients scheduled for orthognathic surgery. Data were compared using Mann-Whitney non-parametric U-test.Results: The results showed no differences between the groups in the total amount of mouth opening, protrusion, and in lateral excursions, but the percentage of mandibular movement explained by condylar translation was significantly increased after surgery (20% vs. 23.6%). During opening, the post-surgery patients showed a more symmetrical mandibular interincisal point and condylar path than pre-surgery patients (p < 0.01).Discussion: Patients treated with orthognathic surgery for skeletal Class III malocclusion recover a good and symmetric temporomandibular joint function. We investigated the effectiveness of artificial silk-based nerve graft in nerve recovery and in helping regain motor functionality in rats. The purpose of this study is to test two questions: (1) Can nerve growth after transection be improved using artificial nerve guides? (2) Does nerve recovery have an impact on the walking patterns of the rat during the recovery period? Rats underwent sciatic nerve sectioning followed by reconstructive surgery. In these experiments, the sciatic nerve was substituted with an artificial silk guide that was biofunctionalized with growth factors and testedin vitro, as described previously. Three-dimensional motion capture and histological analyses were performed. After recovery periods of three and six months, the rats’ kinematics were analyzed during an over-ground walking task to evaluate the nerve recovery progress. The functional nerve recovery showed significant differences between the operated and non-operated sides of the rat, but no differences in their walking patterns during the recovery period. The histological analysis showed the reorganization of nerve tissue into the nerve as well as the presence of multiple neuronal extensions. Knee and hip alignment and knee moments during landing are considered risk factors for knee injuries while ankle bracing has been demonstrated to alter landing kinematics and kinetics at these joints. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a semi-rigid ankle brace has an effect on knee and hip kinematics and kinetics during landing on uneven surfaces. Seventeen recreational athletes performed a landing task on a randomly inclined platform with and without an ankle brace. Three different surface alignments were generated: everted, neutral, and inverted. Ground reaction forces (GRF), kinematics, and brace reaction forces were measured. Two independent variables were tested: the brace factor (braced and non-braced) and the inclination factor (everted, neutral, and inverted). Seven separate 2 × 3 repeated measures MANOVAs were employed to compare GRF, knee, and hip initial angles and range of motion (ROM), knee, and hip forces and moments. Participants landed with a more flexed knee and hip during the brace condition, followed by a knee ROM reduction. No differences were observed for the kinetic variables. Landing on the inverted surface resulted in increased peak magnitudes of the vertical and the mediolateral GRF compared to landing on the neutral surface. Landing on the everted surface caused higher knee and hip abduction moments during early contact. Results confirm that ankle bracing may affect the kinematics of the whole lower extremity with no effect on knee or hip loading. The Mount Pizzuto earth flow has been periodically active in recent decades. Early in 2006, it surged and created a dam across the Ginestra torrent. Episodic floods induced by the earth-flow dam periodically damaged a section of a local road and power and telephone service lines. This paper presents a map showing deformational structures along the flow and a geometric reconstruction of thrust faults at the earth-flow toe from 2006 to 2014. The map, produced on the basis of field observations, shows the spatial distribution of back-tilted surfaces, flank ridges and normal, thrust, and strike-slip faults. Springs, creeks, and ponds are also shown on the map. The map indicates that the earth flow is composed of five kinematic zones. Cartographic data and the spatial–temporal reconstruction of the thrusting evolution offer the basis for interpreting the (mid-term) kinematics of the flow and its controlling factors, and for assessing the influence of earth-flow movement on torrent channel capacity.
